Arriving trains must coast into the terminal as no catenary is provided under the overhead portal cranes
GERMANY: Up to 13 intermodal trains a day for destinations across Europe are now being formed and dispatched from the automated MegaHub terminal at Lehrte
following a formal inauguration attended by Parliamentary State Secretary Enak Ferlemann and DB Board Member for Infrastructure Ronald Pofalla
The 120 000 m2 complex has been built on part of the Lehrter marshalling yard
with the funding shared between Deutsche Bahn and the federal government
The official opening followed a year of trials that included some commercial services
The concept of an automated interchange for intermodal consignments was floated as early as 1993
and agreement on the funding was reached in 2011
delays in securing planning permission and related issues meant that construction did not start until May 2018
The first customer was Osnabrück-based Hellmann Worldwide Logistics
which previously used the intermodal terminal at Hannover-Linden
Automated shuttles are used to transport containers between the three cranes
The Lehrte Mega-Hub has two groups of three 720 m long tracks spanned by three large portal cranes
Containers and swap bodies are sorted automatically and moved between trains or to and from lorries using the portal cranes and 12 autonomous electric transporters
The terminal has been designed to allow for future expansion using another three cranes and eight more transporters
Details of the loads are recorded by video as the trains or lorries enter the terminal
and all loading and unloading moves are controlled by a central computer
with the process taking ‘just a few minutes’
A train can generally be fully loaded within a 3 h window
Pofalla affirmed that ‘shifting freight to the green rail system is one of the simplest and most effective measures for protecting the climate
Transhipment processes at Lehrte are faster than anywhere else in Germany
we remove 52 lorries from our roads and thereby automatically cut CO2 emissions.’ Ferlemann added that the project would be a template for ‘many more facilities’ in Germany
‘The new MegaHub is one of the most innovative projects in freight transport today’
suggested Niedersachsen Transport Minister Dr Bernd Althusmann
‘It underscores the exceptional role that Niedersachsen plays at the logistics crossroads of Europe
The hub will strengthen the competitiveness of climate-friendly rail transport and further increase Niedersachsen’s appeal for the logistics sector.’
Prototype autonomous battery-powered container wagons are being developed by engineers at California start up Parallel Systems
CEO and former SpaceX engineer Matt Soule explains how the company aims to bring new thinking to rail freight
GERMANY: Intermodal services using the automated MegaHub terminal at Lehrte will be stepped up significantly in April
and train-to-train transfers will begin.
29 rail projects included in the 2030 federal transport infrastructure plan have been added to the priority list for implementation
Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer announced on November 6
The decision follows examination of the cost-effectiveness of 44 potential projects

Germany's most advanced freight hub has gone into operation
following two years of construction work and several months of test runs
The MegaHub Lehrte container rail terminal was officially opened today by Ronald Pofalla
DB's Member of the Management Board for Infrastructure; Enak Ferlemann
state secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure; and Dr Bernd Althusmann
transport minister for the state of Lower Saxony
Containers are loaded at record speed at Lehrte
ensuring that goods reach customers faster
The hub's aim is to boost the appeal of rail freight transport
DB will use the new terminal to shift more cargo to the eco-friendly rail network
Up to 13 trains are formed every day at MegaHub Lehrte
which corresponds to some 250,000 lorry journeys every year and an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 120,000 tonnes
The German government and DB have invested EUR 171 million in the new container rail terminal
Member of the Management Board for Infrastructure at DB: "Shifting freight to the green rail system is one of the simplest and most effective measures for protecting the climate
we remove 52 lorries from our roads and thereby automatically cut CO2 emissions."
Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and the Federal Commissioner for Rail Transport: "The government's clear political objective is to shift traffic from road to rail
This requires cutting-edge transhipment facilities
MegaHub Lehrte uses ultra-modern solutions and symbolises these policies
It sets an example for many more facilities in Germany to follow."
Lower Saxony's Minster for Economic Affairs
Transport and Digitalisation: "The new MegaHub is one of the most innovative projects in freight transport today
and it underscores the exceptional role that Lower Saxony plays at the logistics crossroads of Europe
The hub will strengthen the competitiveness of climate-friendly rail transport and further increase the appeal of Lower Saxony for the logistics sector."
Cameras register the loads carried by trains and lorries when they enter the facility
Three 20-metre-high cranes and twelve autonomous electric transporters sort the containers and allocate them to freight trains with pinpoint accuracy
A central computer system oversees the work of loading and moving the containers
Operations at the terminal are particularly quiet and energy-efficient: when trains arrive
they use their momentum to roll onto the tracks beneath the cranes without drawing electricity from the power grid
The site offers potential for expansion to twice the number of cranes and up to 20 transporters
I read with interest Jay Bigalke’s Philatelic Foreword column about the future of American Philatelic Society World Series of Philately shows in the July 17 issue of Linn’s Stamp News
“Are there too many WSP stamp shows nationwide?”
I fear that very soon the opposite question might be asked
In addition to the shows Bigalke mentioned
I’ve seen that our two biggest challenges have been volunteers and venue
just two years after I had started to exhibit because one of the “old guard” had to relinquish his role due to health
I had no idea what I was doing — as was made painfully public in an issue of the Philatelic Exhibitor some months later
That experience led to the first lesson: Shows should always have an active backup for each role
my car was rear-ended two days before Colopex opened
We don’t have backups perfectly set up yet
The second and perhaps more important challenge is venue
It is very difficult to get a satisfactory venue
especially for a June show (such as Colopex)
Our last venue had four different general managers in about six months
and the reservations we had made to secure the venue were lost in the shuffle
Venues also do not always take a local stamp club seriously as a renter
I’ve often wondered if the APS could be helpful with this because the national offices of the hotel chains might take things more seriously if they knew a stamp show was not simply a local event but had the imprimatur of the APS
A show is a place to get together with one’s fellow collectors
It’s a place where dealers congregate
allowing one to find material that is hard to find elsewhere
While eBay and other online commerce sites can also allow the collector to find difficult or esoteric material
especially of material from overseas vendors
and the loss of Delcampe for many collectors in the United States are making this more problematic
It is also difficult for small vendors to do business on these platforms due to some of the changes in tax laws and their enforcement
At a show there’s the added benefit of building personal relationships with the dealers (which often leads to them finding items for your collection) and actually getting to see the material in person
You can get personal advice at the frames from the jurors
Sometimes you meet folks who can really help in your knowledge of your topic
rural mail exhibit at the 2023 Ibra exhibition in Essen
When I got to the frames the first day to see that my exhibit was correctly set up
there was a collector there who was from Lehrte
Stamp collecting can be a solitary endeavor
but it also can be a way to make great new friends that can last a lifetime
Some of my philatelic friends go back to my student days at Ohio State University
where two members of the chemistry department introduced me to the stamp world in Columbus
There are countries in which there are only a few shows
Sadly it’s hard as a result to learn how to exhibit and to judge exhibits because there aren’t enough shows to learn how to do either well
one of the things the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors did was create the Sapphire award
which is given for showing a multiframe exhibit at 20 different World Series of Philately shows
a number of the shows that qualified me for this award have either ceased to exist or are under suspension
It might not be possible in the very near future to earn this award
We also need to make shows more fun to attend
One idea that the Worthington (Ohio) Stamp Show recently pioneered is called the “Free f’r All.” Participants show one frame
of anything they might collect and wish to share
There is an evening party on the show floor after the show closes for the night
and in a couple of cases has led to those exhibits being submitted to World Series of Philately shows
Colopex has also done a Free f’r All
a joint venture of the Germany Philatelic Society and the Bund Deutscher Philatelisten (the German equivalent to the APS)
had a “Klein aber Fein” (“small but fine”) show using the German standard 12-page frames
Some of those exhibits introduced European showgoers to the U.S
There was a youth area with a child’s swimming pool full of stamps
We need to think outside the envelope to give shows a good future

The Port of Kiel has introduced additional intermodal cargo services between Lehrte MegaHub from Kiel to Verona in northern Italy
The trains are operated by Kombiverkehr KG
and Ludwigshafen at the Lehrte fast transshipment facility
have a length of 540m approved for Alpine transit via the Brenner Pass
and each have 20 wagons for the transport of 20 trailers and 20 containers up to 30 feet
The trains leave the north German Port of Kiel in the evening so that loading units in Lehrte can still change over to further destinations during the night
containers and trailers from the various routes and the Hanover and Braunschweig economic area are loaded in Lehrte and then shipped on via Kiel to Norway
The shipping companies of Stena Line (to Gothenburg)
Color Line (to Oslo) and DFDS (to Klaipeda) offer daily ferry departures from Kiel
There are also two weekly round trips with SCA Logistics to the Swedish south coasts (to Malmö and Sundsvall) and east coasts (to Umea and Iggesund)
Trains to and from Italy now have a direct connection to the Ostuferhafen in addition to the Schwedenkai
also offering direct options for onward transhipment to the Baltic States as well as to the Swedish south and east coasts.
“The new connection via Hanover Lehrte now gives us the capacity that is needed for an even greater shift of hinterland transport from road to rail.”
The port noted that it is steadily increasing its unaccompanied cargo – without a driver or cab present during a crossing – unit output
improving the case to increasingly transport goods inland by rail
more than 100,000 unaccompanied trailers and containers are handled in the Port of Kiel – a third of which are transported by rail in the port’s hinterland
The connection via the MegaHub Lehrte will create capacities for the transport of 20,000 additional freight units
rail freight transport reduces emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) by an average of 57 grams per tonne-kilometre during the pre- and onward carriage to and from the port
this saves about 1.4 tonnes of CO2 per cargo unit with a load weight of 25 tonnes
there is now a total of six weekly connections to choose from
“Shifting traffic to rail is a declared goal of our Blue Port strategy and supports the efforts of the shipping industry towards more sustainability in transport
The new trains can save up to 28,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.”

could have implications for future research by providing a new perspective on artificial intelligence (AI) models of how the brain works — and a basis for testing the effects of drugs on a little proto-brain
whose decisions can be measured behaviourally
Scientists from UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and other institutions
created a system named Dishbrain to investigate how the brain works
researchers took 800,000 brain cells from both embryonic mice and human brain cells derived from stem cells
They then grew them on top of microelectrode arrays that could both stimulate and read their activity
Electrodes on the left or right of one array were then fired to tell a small number of neurons in the Dishbrain which side the ball was on
while distance from the paddle was indicated by the frequency of signals
Feedback from the electrodes enabled Dishbrain to learn how to return the ball
by making the cells act as if they themselves were the paddle — and
moving the panel in their [simulated] world
Although microelectrode arrays have previously been used to read the activity of brain cells
this is the first time that scientists have been able to use them to stimulate neurons in a structured way to produce responses that are realised in terms of meaningful behaviour
Professor Karl Friston (UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology)
said: “The beautiful and pioneering aspect of this work rests on equipping the neurons with sensations – the feedback – and crucially the ability to act on their world.”
the cultures learned how to make their world more predictable and have less chance of encountering surprising behaviourby acting upon it
This is remarkable because you cannot teach this kind of self-organisation; simply because – unlike a pet – these mini brains have no sense of reward and punishment.”
“The translational potential of this work is truly exciting: it means we don’t have to worry about creating ‘digital twins’ to test therapeutic interventions
the ultimate biomimetic ‘sandbox’ in which to test the effects of drugs and genetic variants – a sandbox constituted by exactly the same computing (neuronal) elements found in your brain and mine.”
By building a living model brain from basic structures in this way
scientists hope to be able to experiment using real brain function
rather than equivalent models made on a computer
the team now hope to use the cells to see what effect alcohol has when introduced to Dishbrain
Professor Friston said: “The unique opportunity here is to see how the drug affects neurotransmission at a synaptic level – and
how would a ‘drunken dishbrain’ cope with playing Pong
The translational potential here is clearly relevant for psychiatric and neurological conditions that are manifest in terms of aberrant choices and behaviours (e.g.
The findings also raise the possibility of creating an alternative to animal testing when investigating how new drugs or gene therapies respond in these dynamic interventions
Cortical Labs) said: “We have shown we can interact with living biological neurons in a such a way that compels them to modify their activity
leading to something that resembles intelligence.”
models of the brain have been developed according to how computer scientists think the brain might work
That is usually based on our current understanding of information technology
Researchers hope that Dishbrain may resolve some of the bottlenecks in computer science
Dr Hon Weng Chong (Chief executive of Cortical Labs) said: “Dishbrain offers a simpler approach to test how the brain works and gain insights into debilitating conditions such as epilepsy and dementia.”

a duo trailer vehicle has been tested on German roads as part of the EcoDuo project
led by a consortium of German and Spanish companies including Sesé
the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA)
aims to demonstrate the efficiency and sustainability benefits of this innovative transport solution
involves transport routes between Spain and Germany
recently completed its first journey on German soil
featuring two standard semi-trailers hauled by a single tractor unit
has been tested extensively in Spain over the past six years
this is the first instance of such a vehicle being deployed in Germany
The journey began at the Volkswagen Group’s plant in Wolfsburg
with the duo trailer travelling to the terminal in Lehrte
the semi-trailers were transported by rail to Barcelona
before being re-coupled to form a duo trailer for the remainder of the trip to its final destination.
This hybrid approach of combining road and rail transport is designed to optimise efficiency
“Modular and intermodal solutions are a fundamental part of Sesé’s strategy to achieve a more sustainable and efficient supply chain
These vehicles have demonstrated great advantages in terms of reduced emissions
Sesé’s fleet now includes 60 duotrailer vehicles
which have proven to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%
and up to 90% when running on renewable fuel
The ability to carry twice as much freight on fewer trucks helps alleviate road congestion and minimises fuel consumption
The official presentation of the EcoDuo project will take place on 16 September at the ‘IAA Transportation 2024’ event in Hannover
The duotrailer will also be showcased throughout the event from 17 to 22 September
offering attendees the opportunity to learn more about this pioneering transport solution

MY MOM is in a hospital in Ohio battling covid19
unsure of what is happening and she was unable to talk for a few days because she had an infection in her saliva glands
“Do you ever get out of bed in the hospital and walk?” she answered
It’s hard to imagine my mom alone and helpless in a hospital
practised tai chi and rode a stationary bicycle
Last year she gave up most of her exercise and deteriorated quickly
I know I should be focusing more on my mom’s current battle
and I do when I push aside the rage at how irresponsible and selfish so many Americans have been in this pandemic
Lately I have been piecing together the stories of my mom’s life
I think about how many crises she faced all alone
my mom was an only child who lived with her grandmother and waited most of the time for my Grandma Josephine to return home
My grandmother worked her job and my grandfather’s to earn money for bribes to free my grandfather from the endless cycle of being drafted by the Romanian army
My grandfather finally devised a plan for his family to sneak out of Romania
where workers were needed before World War II
My grandmother got caught at the Romanian/Hungarian border trying to escape with my mom
my mom visited my grandmother to talk to her through a wire fence
My grandmother and mother finally escaped with the aid of a smuggler
my mother travelled by herself with this stranger
who she insisted turned out to be a kind man
My grandmother worked long hours in an underground munitions factory
my mom headed home from school to write letters
Her friends talked her into staying to play games with them instead
She remembers running through the forest trying to outrun American planes dropping bombs
my mom managed to identify the rubble of her house
My grandma ran home and found my mom digging through the rubble for anything she could salvage
Missouri and taken back to Romania when she was a baby
My mom waited in Germany for her papers to come through
cleaned houses and met my dad when she couldn’t speak English
who worked as a radio operator on aeroplanes for the US Army Corps
wanted nothing more in life than to feel grounded after the war so he bought a dairy farm in a most remote place
my mom found herself alone all day and most of the night because of his long commutes to work
but I realise now its remoteness symbolised all the loneliness of her life
contented in walking the fields and forests of his farm
It’s only since she’s been in the hospital battling covid19 that I have begun to understand how being alone defined her life
I resent that she is alone in a hospital now because of careless
uncaring people who have ignored simple covid19 protocols like wearing masks
physical distancing and keeping away from crowds

According to a news report by national broadcaster RTL
a lorry driver was killed at the Lehrte restop near Hanover after being run over in the aftermath of a heated argument with a colleague
A police statement cited by RTL says that one of the two lorry drivers involved in the argument got into his vehicle
ran over the man he had been arguing with and then just drove on
The police nonetheless believes that it was not the intention of the driver to run over his colleague
Officers ordered the 38-year-old HGV driver to take a blood test
as he smelled of alcohol when he was arrested
He is now being investigated for negligent homicide
fleeing a traffic accident and endangering road traffic as a result of drunkenness
RTL reports that the victim was injured so badly that he died at the scene of the accident
It is believed the man who died was a 40-year-old truck driver from Russia who had been working for a Lithuanian freight forwarding company
a significantly less serious albeit unsettling incident at a German HGV parking area occurred in the country’s Thuringia region on the same evening
An official report by the regional police documents how at the Industriepark-Nord parking area near Meuselwitz
an argument between two truck drivers saw one trucker block the exit to the HGV park
did so to prevent his 62-year-old fellow countryman from driving out
the 40-year-old had locked himself in his vehicle and was seen drinking beer in the cab – something he continued to do despite the presence of the police
it took several attempts to persuade the man to get out of the vehicle
A breath test was conducted and the driver was found to be comfortably above the limit

Germany's most influential postwar literary critic
frequently referred to as the Literaturpapst
had been diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year
Reich-Ranicki grew up in a Jewish Polish-German family in Berlin and survived the Warsaw ghetto
His parents died in the Treblinka concentration camp
he joined the Polish army and was briefly stationed at the consulate general in London
He was famous for his scathing critiques and putdowns. After writing a withering review of Günter Grass's 1995 novel Ein weites Feld (A Wide Field), he was pictured on the cover of Der Spiegel tearing apart a copy of the book. Last year, when Grass published a poem that was critical of Israel
Reich-Ranicki described it as "disgusting"
He frequently fell out with other leading literary figures
who included a thinly disguised portrait of Reich-Ranicki in his novel Death of a Critic
in which an author is accused of murdering a famous literary reviewer
The portrayal of the Reich-Ranicki figure in the book earned Walser allegations of antisemitism
Reich-Ranicki was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his TV work on the books programme Literary Quartet
but refused to accept it live on television
arguing that that the programme he had been forced to sit through had been "a load of rubbish"
German papers have been full of praise for Reich-Ranicki
who had frequently championed forgotten classics
Süddeutsche Zeitung called him "der Mann
der uns das Lesen lehrte" (the man who taught us how to read)
When asked in 2005 whether he believed in God
he answered: "I believe in Shakespeare and Goethe
