One of my favorite films that played at this year's Overlook Film Festival was Good Boy
a haunted house movie shot from the point of view of Indy
This was one of the most buzzed about films at the fest and
I had a chance to catch up with Ben Leonberg (Director
Cinematographer) and Alex Cannon (Co-Writer)
discussing the challenges of making the film
but we’d do things like fetch and obedience
So I had a little bit of a background when it came to: How do you get a performance out of a dog
and they do not listen to us well enough that we could make a short film
Ben Leonberg: The most important resource in making this movie was time
You go into [filming] every day and you think you know how the dog
It’s not like you’re working with a human actor who agrees on the reality of the premise that we're making a movie together
Every shot required some level of invention
this didn't quite work the way we expected
so we have to shift the camera or change how we're dialing in these performances to get it all to work
You’re able to build these scenes with Indy and create just so much tension
I love that sequence where the camera is right behind Indy as he’s looking up the stairs
and the sense of scale from his POV really makes that scene so much more effective
Ben Leonberg: In terms of creating tension
we storyboarded the whole movie ahead of time
so the film and the [original] storyboards are not one-to-one
I started redrawing some of the scenes with a loose stick figure because if you're working with the human actor
We’re setting up for the dog to react genuinely
He can’t hit a perfect mark if his eyes catch the light
You’re filming it so that the camera's not distracting to him
and also you have to have flexibility to work around the impreciseness of Indy’s performance
Did Indy have a favorite treat or toy when you were filming
Ben Leonberg: Indy’s favorite thing would be carrots
but it was just with his normal dinner food
He wasn't as excited about that because if he looks super excited
it dispels the illusion of the haunted house movie
While the film is from Indy’s point of view
there’s a very grounded story surrounding his owner
Alex Cannon: You hear stories about how dogs can smell drugs and bombs
They are used in hospitals to detect some diseases
It feels like they are detecting the invisible and what if they’re able to detect a malevolent force that they don't fully understand
So much of the movie is Indy motivated by what's happening and what he's experiencing
oftentimes moving away from the experience the [human] characters are having
How did Larry Fessenden get involved in this project
He always has such a wealth of knowledge that I know has been an asset in indie film productions
Ben Leonberg: Because the dog is such a big X factor
we recorded the full film with myself and the film's producer
So the movie was mostly done by the time Larry came on board
so he got to see the movie and agreed to be a part of it
He's been great and he's been especially helpful in post-production and the festival phase
He is a joy to work with and brings so much to the movie
What has the festival experience been like
I can imagine that some people that are not normally into horror movies have been interested in Good Boy
and I can also imagine that the audience reaction may be a little different with a dog in danger as opposed to a human
We’ve been cooking this thing up for four plus years
and to finally get to see it in a room where you can feel other people react to it is a joy
but when you see it with a big crowd in a room
you can see that the scare actually does work
Ben Leonberg: It's been really fun talking to people after and someone says
I saw this because I like dogs!” You can tell they're clearly not into horror
People seem to genuinely find the [movie] very effective
and then they want to talk about their relationship with their dog

From a simple observation of canine behavior —”What dog owner hasn’t wondered why their dog barks at ‘nothing?'” — Ben Leonberg has with his SXSW-premiering Good Boy created what he calls “a haunted house movie from an entirely new perspective.” Leonberg’s own dog Indy stars alongside Shane Jensen in this story of an ailing man who retreats to his family’s secluded rural cabin only to confront generational trauma and supernatural forces
With Larry Fessenden as the family patriarch
whose foreboding presence appears solely through distressed VHS tapes playing
the house here becomes something of a liminal space
one in which the ghostly presences are unseen (again
that “dog barking at nothing”) and suddenly erupting in demonic spurts
But the biggest special effect here is Leonberg’s use of Indy’s POV as both a stylistic and narrative device
The film is largely shot from Indy’s eye-level
with some narrative information coming from diegetic sound (phone calls and those VHS tapes)
but plot advancement largely filtering through a dog’s consciousness
and to his credit Leonberg resists a storyteller’s natural urge to grant the dog a greater understanding than he’d have in the real world
It’s a choice that leads to truly heartbreaking moments as threats come from his destructive
isolation-seeking owner as well as whatever malignant forces lurk in the home’s many dark shadows
As Leonberg discusses in our interview below
he shot Good Boy over the course of three years
relying on a mixture of home training and the Kuleshov effect to produce Indy’s very affecting performance
Filmmaker: Your film prompts so many questions from a production point of view
the concept of this film or observing some sort of behavior from your dog
I was watching Poltergeist probably for the 100th time
The opening follows the family’s golden retriever who we learn can clearly perceive the ghosts before anyone else
This same trope (the dog who “knows better”) appears in tons of horror movies
and I thought that someone should make a movie from that dog’s perspective
But Indy (my actual dog) is the second part of the equation
and the secret sauce that makes the concept work
He usually hits you with it before meal time
but on the occasions when he’s just staring at “empty” corners
or tracking smells only he can perceive… it’s really spooky
why their dog barks suddenly barks for no reason
What sort of limitations did Indy as protagonist place on the production process
Leonberg: We filmed for over 400 days over the course of 3 years
It was an unconventional production by necessity and design
so we had to invent a way of filmmaking that embraced those limitations
We were in a constant state of production those entire 3 years–either filming the few set-ups we could get each day
As much as we planned out this movie–and we really planned it (I hand drew storyboards for the entire film)–working with a dog who doesn’t know he’s in a movie is a huge x factor
We also really wanted Indy to be the center of the story and the film’s only point-of-view character
but Indy’s compelling on-screen presence makes it all worth it
Filmmaker: And how much pre-shoot training did you do with Indy
the film’s producer) and I like to say that Indy has been training his whole life for the movie
but that the training was just to be our best friend
Beyond some advanced obedience training we did with a trainer when he was very young
and capturing Indy’s “performance” didn’t rely much on conventional dog training
Indy doesn’t know that many commands or tricks
but he is a really smart dog – he learned quickly that the camera meant he was supposed to do “something”
And that level of curiosity was a great baseline from which to dial in the rest of this “performance”
We did the rest by prompting him with various stimuli (food
The blocking was the hardest part–we never found a way for Indy to hit exact marks
what sort of storytelling rules did you impose upon yourself given that the dog is the film’s POV character and in terms of information given the audience
What elements of the story were you content to leave mysterious given the dog’s ability to understand — or not — what was happening in the story world
Leonberg: It was really important to me that Indy be a character that audiences would relate to as a real dog
That they recognize his behavior and reactions as genuine to dogs they’ve had
This isn’t Air Bud or Lassie – where the dog is always happy-go-lucky
My goal was to have Indy behave and act realistically (or as realistically as possible given the film’s supernatural events)
He’s not imbued with a voice nor directed by abstract thought
we tried to mimic the mission Jack London brought to his canine protagonists of White Fang and The Call of the Wild
My belief is that horror works best when it plays inside the audience’s imagination
That’s why I so often rely on the Kuleshov effect and Indy’s naturally occurring 1000-yard stare
if the audience is presented with a shot of Indy tilting his head in curiosity
followed by a shot from his subjectivity of an “empty” space
then our imagination (which naturally assumes the worst) fills in the rest
Filmmaker: There is so much rain in the film
Could you discuss the challenges of working with the rain machines and having Indy be so wet
Leonberg: Because Indy could only film in such a short window each day
that meant we had a lot of production time to build complex set-ups ahead of his start time
It’s obviously physically very difficult to film under rain machines (and to light the rain correctly!)
but it also does amazing things to Indy’s performance just by getting him wet
It’s not a coincidence that Indy’s “darkest hours” are when he’s out in a heavy downpour
But the rain (and general wetness of the film) is also an important part of the haunted landscape–especially because it’s told from a dog’s perspective
As a little kid I overheard an old hunter talking about how when animals are mortally wounded
He claimed that it was because the mud made dying hurt less
You also sometimes hear stories about old dogs that will do the same thing (crawl under the porch to die
or wander off and lie down in the mud when they’re sick)
That stuff has been rattling around in my brain since childhood and (without giving too much away) it’s in the DNA of some of the movie’s supernatural motifs
Filmmaker: I know you have a background in VFX
Could you tell us some of the tools you used and how much you were able to realize yourself and how much you had to bring in other artists
Leonberg: Despite having worked in virtual reality for years
and doing the majority of the compositing for Good Boy myself
this film is above all a practical production
I have an instinctive understanding for how to “plate out” unwanted elements of a shot through compositing and capturing blank background plates
This was really handy when I needed to be on-camera (in the same shot as Indy) as a trainer
And with Indy being such an “x factor” in terms of blocking and camera movement
having the confidence to turn what was planned as a standard shot into a vfx-shot on the fly (that I would composite myself) was a huge asset to keeping production on schedule
The majority of the additive vfx work was for the supernatural
these were the shots where I worked with other VFX artists to touch up and improve the practical effects
Filmmaker: The film is very much invested in themes around illness and mortality and how our own personal reactions to these can be intensely private ones
What did you draw on for this aspect of the film
and particularly the relationship between Todd and his sister
Leonberg: I think that fundamentally all ghost stories are about mortality–what happens to us after we die
And I certainly relate to Good Boy’s human characters when faced with that
But I was always more interested in what the experience of human mortality would be like for our dogs
You hear about lap dogs that face down grizzly bears when their human families are in peril
or dogs that run into burning buildings without a thought for their own safety
The questions I was interested in exploring was: what wouldn’t a dog do to protect the person he loves most from invisible dark forces
What would it be like for a dog who would die to protect the person he loves
Filmmaker: Your particular haunted house is one inflected by generational trauma
which is often conveyed through media and home recordings
I thought a bit about the liminal space in Skinamarink a bit
as well as other more classic haunted house tales
how did you conceive of this setting within the lineage of haunted house films
we did live there during the whole production
My wife was an amazing sport and game to transform what is in reality a charming cottage in the woods into a haunted family estate
I love that you mentioned a feeling of a liminal space–I think so many haunted houses have that vibe
and it’s absolutely what I was going for: like the house itself is in this ethereal spot between the world of the real and the supernatural
That’s why I spent so much time learning the local weather so our day exteriors were always shrouded in heavy fog
One of my biggest literary references for the story and the design of the house was Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher
writer/director Ben Leonberg and producer Kari Fischer to discuss what it's like making your furry friend the star of your horror movie
The title of writer/director Ben Leonberg and producer Kari Fischer’s first feature film could not be more apt—Indy the Dog is a very good boy, maybe even one of the best boys. He also is a star in the making as the lead character of the horror film Good Boy
Indy’s owner moves them out of the city to a lonely family home in the country
I’m not exaggerating when I say this is an exceptional and moving animal performance
and if you’re a dog parent who loves their furry companion as much as I love mine
you might be reduced to a blubbering mess by the film’s end
The making of the movie was a family affair. Leonberg and Fischer, married, own Indy and took three years crafting the film, living in the house where they shot. It took so long because of the usual restrictions with animal actors, and because they wanted to capture authentic moments of Indy, including his naps and the moments he woke up. They have a cut, they said, with an audio track that’s only Indy voice direction
The rest of the film's dialogue had to be ADR'd
This is exactly the kind of movie indie filmmakers should admire—scrappy
NFS got the chance to sit down with the filmmakers (and Indy) to discuss the challenges of Good Boy and all the adaptations you must make when working with animals
there's the warning in Hollywood that you should never work with animals or children in a film because of the additional complications they can bring to a set
the filmmakers wanted not only to have a dog character but to make him the lead
"The reason they say that is because it is hard and it's costly," Leonberg said
"One of the main reasons is that the kids and animals can't work a full workday
The film industry is based on 12-hour days
So that means that you're going to be filming either with many dogs
So that meant that the shooting schedule is just going to be really
This is why they decided to move into their shooting location full-time
"Once you decide that that's something you're going to do
you just have to embrace the limitations as a benefit
and what kind of location agreement you're looking for
It's not like we're just going to be there for 12 days ..
What if you don't happen to have your own immensely talented dog on the project
"My advice would definitely be to let the trainer direct
almost direct the scene," Leonberg said
"The more you can put the dog considerations in the creative driver's seat
but really you're creating a huge opportunity that you're going to get something people haven't seen before
Because you're not trying to force what is unnatural for a dog to do and might feel false or not genuine."
Leonberg's background in virtual reality allowed them to use some immersive cameras that gave them the low-to-the-ground perspective at Indy's level
and they also frequently filmed set-ups twice—once with them inside it
and then a blank plate they could use to mask themselves out in post
and he just got to the point where he understood that the camera means that he's supposed to do something," Fischer said
There were sequences when they wanted to capture Indy asleep and waking up
and that simply required a lot of time and patience
because it's with a small number of people
there's so much verbal coaching to get these shots," Leonberg said
"So much of the production audio is just us talking to Indy
one of our co-producers is the lead mixer and really marshaled the whole way
where we went through all the scenes in the film
in the physical spaces with the actors who are doing the vocal performance that then go on top of these scenes."
There is a third-act sequence in the rain that took nine months to film
There are impressive moments of action in this sequence
and I wondered how some of them were captured—especially when Indy's safety is so important
the answer is working slowly and patiently
"There's a lot of things that are done in reverse," Leonberg said
"I was working on a set once where the stunt coordinator was also the stunt performer
It's a scene where she's getting kidnapped and they would set up the scene where she's the one pushing the actor who's attacking her hands into her neck
So it still looks like there's tension
but she's in complete control of the scene
"So there's scenes where if Indy ever looks like he's trying to pull away from something
what has actually happened is he's trying to run forward to a tennis ball
and we're just holding his hips and telling him to stay
to try and get that sense of action and tension."
They employed a lot of old-school camera tricks to make things look scarier than they were
"A lot of the footage is shot at speed
I don't know if 'tricks' is the right word ..
They also commissioned a stuffed-toy version of Indy they called "Findy" for any of the truly dangerous moments
meaning those effects were practical and not CGI
Their unique approach was definitely different than the usual film project
but I really think there's something to a way of filmmaking that uses time as a resource," he said
He likened the "typical" film set to the barn-raising scene in Witness
"Most films are made on 12-hour days that go on with no breaks
by necessity—I don't think I would make my second film three hours at a time or less in some cases
It was much more than that in terms of the time I was put into it
But I think there's something to be said for making things that as a marathon
A look at how the Blackmagic Camera app was used by hundreds of fans to help KoЯn create a dynamic and immersive concert documentary
that’s a band name I probably haven’t seen or thought about since the days of watching MTV’s Total Request Live when I got home from middle school in the mid-2000s
Blackmagic Design has shared a cool story about how one of the most popular nu-metal groups from their day
used hundreds of fans to help them create a pretty kick-ass rock concert documentary
Armed with Blackmagic Camera apps on their smartphones
over 200 KoЯn fans served as assistant camera operators on a recent documentary that captured the band’s 30th-anniversary concert in action
Let’s look at some fun behind-the-scenes tidbits about how this was pulled off
As a celebration of the American metal band’s 30th anniversary concert
set up a unique workflow using the Blackmagic Camera app and Blackmagic Cloud to turn hundreds of fans into assistant camera operators
it actually sounds like a pretty simple process thanks to the ease of use with the Blackmagic Camera app
which can be downloaded on both iPhone and Android smartphones and is free to download and use
the real trick was working with all of the footage and data collected by the fans with the goal of editing together a seamless story and experience from the concert

If you had told me one of the creepiest and best movies of SXSW 2025 would be told exclusively through the perspective of a dog, I would have been intrigued but incredulous. On paper, it sounds like a gimmick that would quickly overstay its welcome. But with his innovative and experimental film Good Boy, co-writer and director Ben Leonberg proves that such an idea is more than a gimmick
Featuring a stellar performance by canine star Indy
Good Boy is a surprisingly poignant ghost story told through the eyes of man’s best friend
Indy (Leonberg’s own dog) lives with his owner Todd
who has recently been diagnosed with cancer
Todd takes Indy to the abandoned family farm where his grandfather (Larry Fessenden) used to live
As overheard during a phone call with Todd’s sister
the place even has a reputation for being haunted
But Todd shrugs off any stories and forges ahead with Indy in tow
Indy starts staring at empty corners and dark rooms
Leonberg shows what Indy’s seeing and what he’s seeing is ready to consume Todd
Indy isn’t granted special abilities regarding speech or human communication
All he can do is watch as something stalks him and Todd with each passing night
taking the bones and beats of the typical haunted house film but telling it solely through the eyes of a dog
He even obscures human faces so there’s no temptation to view the story from a human perspective
This is purely Indy’s story and how Leonberg imagines he would experience such terrifying circumstances
Leonberg even constructs canine dream sequences where Indy sees what happens to Todd’s deceased grandfather through the eyes of the grandfather’s loyal golden retriever
Indy has all of the human experiences seen in traditional ghost stories
which makes him feel like more than just an animal or sidekick
That’s thanks to both an incredibly emotive dog and a skilled director who knows how to work with his canine companion
The way that the Indy is able to emote so effectively is in itself almost scary
on par with the husky in John Carpenter’s The Thing
But Leonberg goes a step further and makes you truly terrified about Indy’s fate as he’s yanked under beds
He isn’t tortured by an entity or made to feel prolonged fear
But Leonberg is changing the game in unexpected ways
it’s rendered scarier because only Indy can see the entity and he can’t speak or share his experience
He becomes an extreme version of the archetypal horror character who isn’t believed and is left alone in their fear
There’s nothing Indy can do to help his human and he’s incredibly helpless
which only gets progressively more upsetting as the entity takes hold of Todd
Indy has no idea how to call someone for advice or alert the authorities
These limitations make Good Boy all the scarier as it seems like nothing can be done to keep Indy and his person safe.
a familiar story that is rather threadbare
Leonberg reveals the most crucial information through phone calls with Todd’s sister or old VHS tapes featuring Todd’s grandfather
Those reveals aren’t necessarily earth-shattering
and you probably will find yourself with more questions than answers if you choose to really hone in on the story itself
plot simplicity does suit the very particular form
but with Leonberg unafraid to reveal certain pieces of information
Good Boy excels because it treats its canine hero like a human character without anthropomorphizing him
and sadness through Leonberg’s direction and strong visual storytelling
He truly feels like a person while acting like a dog
meaning that he doesn’t need a human voice or cartoonish or exaggerated expressions to convey emotional stakes and tell a deeply affecting story
Don’t let the gimmick fool you; Good Boy is primed to be one of the most chilling movies of 2025

The 2025 Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) has an extensive lineup with a wide variety of films
documentaries and events that attendees can view throughout all of the festival
audiences are treated to the best of local and international independent film and documentaries
spoke with the Gauntlet about his film joining the CUFF lineup
Leonberg discussed the inspiration of his film from the opening scene Poltergeist
The focus of Good Boy is the dog Indy and his effort to navigate a new house with an unnerving presence
“I think everyone who’s ever had a dog has wondered why their dog is barking at nothing or staring at an empty space in the house
So that was the origin of the idea and what that turned into entirely from the perspective of a dog,” said Leonberg
Leonberg is no stranger to the film industry with years of film experience and teaching film
Much of his history with short films and writing allowed him to develop the skills used to direct his first feature film
“I was really well versed and I cut my teeth making a short film,” said Leonberg. “So to prepare for making Good Boy I was first writing the movie and I was also making little proof of concept shorts that were kind of where I was figuring out how to work with my canine talent
how to tell a story without the benefit of dialogue
and in some cases just practical things like having a camera nine inches off the ground to get onto the dog’s eyeline.”
While working with canine talent can prove difficult
Leonberg had approached the film with outside-the-box thinking and invention
is also Leonberg’s actual dog making the relationship between talent and director tricky as dogs can be quite unpredictable on set
they have a very limited understanding of what you want them to do
Hopefully they’re very eager to please and that they like to follow instructions and learn tricks […] it’s just finding a way to have the camera positioned and be ready to be rolling so that you can queue the dog ready for commands or various stimuli to get different reactions that look like a performance,” said Leonberg
Good Boy falls under the category of the supernatural horror genre which is told through the perspective of Indy
The film follows similar beats to typical haunted house stories and the conversations that would take place between the human characters about the mysterious ongoing events in the house are easily dismissed by Indy’s perspective
“The dog has no comprehension of that conversation.” said Leonberg
and you actually hear that conversation just fade into the background and we do a trick like that several times throughout the movie.”
Audiences can expect a spine-thrilling story that would create an experience that is frightening but endearing and relatable
Leonberg emphasizes the conversations around how the film portrays the relationship between people and their dogs
creating a personalized response to the film
“I think a theme behind it is about the bond that transcends species,” said Leonberg
“The relationship between in the case of the film
a dog and the human character where the people see themselves in that
and what it means to have a creature in your house that has unflagging
Good Boy will have two screenings at CUFF on April 17 and April 25
Leonberg shared his excitement for CUFF and the upcoming conversations
“I’m so excited to be in Calgary and be at the film festival
I’m always excited to talk about the movie and talk about people’s dogs when the film wraps up so I hope to see everybody there!” said Leonberg
CUFF will take place at Globe Cinema in downtown Calgary from April 16 – 27. For tickets and information, check out the CUFF website

How can I negatively review a dog-led haunted house movie
Good Boy is a layup for horror fans who adore their canine companions
Leonberg and co-writer Alex Cannon script a love letter to four-legged friends who lift our spirits
love us unconditionally and protect us from anything—including muddy basement entities
Leonberg's "Doggie Horror Movie" is leagues more than a gimmick
redefining traditional genre scopes for something applaudably innovative
He's a loyal sidekick to Todd (Shane Jensen)
a cancer patient who relocates into his grandfather's eerie woodland home (Larry Fessenden lends a veteran presence as pop-pop in old videos)
Todd's sister Vera (Arielle Friedman) questions the choice
recalling an unshakable discomfort about the isolated spot
Indy barks and claws and tries to warn Todd
It's a brilliant concept that will enrapture pet owners
Animals seem to acknowledge presences we cannot see
yapping into an empty corner or meowing down pitch-black hallways
Leonberg feasts on our paranoias by showing us Indy's perspective—and the shadowy figure that inhabits Todd's new pad
Indy's untrained as an actor yet commands the screen
taking after all-time showdogs like Jumpy (In A Valley of Violence) or Olivia (Widows/Game Night)
Leonberg and his wife-slash-producer Kari Fischer spent three years working with and coaching their adorable pooch on Good Boy
translating patience into an authentic performance from one of the year's breakout stars
Cinematography glides across the floor at Indy's height as he reacts with disgruntled huffs or timid whimpers to Todd's predicaments
All shots involving Indy were reportedly captured on closed sets
with only Leonberg and Fischer joining him in front of the camera
Indy's guardian-like adoration of his people translates to Todd's grappling with health and monsters
Indy's fixated eyes convey legitimate emotion
Leonberg turns Indy into a hero without sacrificing a haunted horror story's draw
complete with action beats and legitimate scares that'll rattle audiences
It's resourcefully do-it-yourself but never shoddy
Indy's second-story and doghouse escape stunts are as thrilling as they are functionally impressive
Then there's the shadowy figure that pursues Todd
Indy takes it upon himself with blazing courage to defend his master—leading to one-on-one altercations with his foe
You'd think a domesticated yet not camera-trained animal might struggle to sell the film's nastiest horror bites
Leonberg manages enough shadow-jumping creeps to sustain a restless atmosphere
or uses the reflective twinkle in a dog's eye to raise our adrenaline with an off-screen gotcha
Good Boy struggles to sell its comprehensive screenplay from start to finish
and the muck-man that keeps reappearing come with storytelling hiccups
but we're stuck justifying a dog's position in a heartfelt horror tale akin to Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake (shades of the Canker Man)
Good Boy avoids becoming a diminishing gimmick—but ambition can supersede execution
there's a dog on screen outshining his humans
commits to creative payoffs that you've never seen before
Good Boy is more than a catchy premise or buzzy idea; it's an original horror gamble that refuses ghoulish conventions
Jason Eisner's V/H/S/2 segment "Slumber Party Alien Abduction?" To say Indy's debut stands out from the pack is an understatement—it's paving the way for horror filmmakers to rethink the genre's limitations

Other breeds were brought into being by specific cultures or classes of people
If civilization is the intersection of a group of people with their environment, so too are their dogs: With coats that evolved to survive the local climate, body styles developed to navigate native terrains, and characters that fit into the social mores of the day, our purebred dogs are living
reflections of the far-flung cultures that developed and nurtured them
we rediscover our globe’s cultural diversity and heritage
we travel to a different place and time to meet the people who developed the snoozing bundles of fur at our sides
It’s also an internal journey whose final destination is
For Leonberger lovers
one of the ultimate rites of owning their giant
gentle breed is to visit the eponymous German town where it was created
in the center of Leonberg’shistoric marketplace
ringed by traditional half-timbered houses
they take the obligatory photo in front of its fountain
the breed didn’t exist – and wouldn’t for another three centuries
But the fountain does sport Leonberg’s coat of arms
And breed lore says that noble beast inspired this shaggy-coated
which soon became a must-have among those who were so well-heeled their families often had crests of their own
If you do want to find a statue of a Leonberger to pose next to in Leonberg
there is a bronze one erected in 2005 in an out-of-the-way commercial area
the dichotomy between these two photo ops encapsulates the interesting beginnings of what some have called the “secret mascot” of Leonberg: Somewhere between the lofty fantasy of a leonine dog and a craftily marketed luxury item arising out of less-than-plush conditions
there is the breed that today we know as the Leonberger
Unlike many breeds that were forged by happy accident – a job needed to be done
and a random dog excelled in it because he was a certain size or shape or color – the Leonberger was a very intentional creation
The man who brought the breed into being was Heinrich Essig
a city councilor and dog dealer in Leonberg
A dog dealer is just what it sounds like – someone who breeds and sells dogs for profit
Leonberg’s market square was also the site of a famous horse market
So the citizens of mid-19th-Century Leonberg were accustomed to the buying and selling of livestock – and dogs were considered just that
Owners across the globe included royals like King Umberto I of Italy
though there are no records to confirm any of this
coated dogs owned by farmers and butchers were common in southern Germany in this period
But it was Essig who had the vision – not to mention the marketing skills – to formalize them into a bona-fide breed
Gifting dogs to high-profile figures to help establish their cachet
and lending them to popular illustrators to use as models
Essig sold Leonbergers to a veritable Who’s Who of prominent 19th Century figures
Owners across the globe included royals like King Umberto I of Italy; Tsar Alexander II of Russia; England’s prince of Wales
better known as “Sissi,” who owned seven of Essig’s dogs
Leonbergers also graced the estates of national leaders like Napoleon II and III
and Otto von Bismarck; the composers Richard Wagner and Sergei Rachmaninoff
Essig bred for one trait that is universal in the breed
stable temperament that proves irresistible to everyone they meet
Dogs of this imposing size needed to be even-tempered
never timid nor aggressive with people or other dogs
Gentle and playful in direct proportion to their formidable size
temperamentally Leonbergers are more akin to a cuddly teddy bear than the aloof lion that was supposedly their inspiration
Leonbergers were dismissed in some quarters as Saint Bernard wanna-bes
and at dog shows they were often lumped in with other breeds
While the newly imagined Leonberger was a resounding success with owners
its reception by Victorian dog authorities was mixed at best
Essig’s refusal to write a standard or memorialize parentage in pedigrees – after all
he knew what his dogs should look like and how they were related – led to ongoing friction with the nascent dog-show fancy
Given this hostility from the burgeoning dog-show world
it’s a wonder that the Leonberger survived beyond Essig’s lifetime
even through the challenges and deprivations of two world wars
The Leonberger also gave back to two breeds that were instrumental in its development: In the 1870s
Essig shipped three Leonberger puppies to Newfoundland breeders in Canada to help add such much-needed fresh blood to the breed
when Essig acquired a Saint Bernard from the Great Saint Bernard Hospice for his Leonberger breeding program
Essig paid the monks in trade with two of his dogs
the hospice’s Saint Bernards were short-coated
and documentation suggests that the long-haired variety may very well be the result of this and later Leonberger contributions
Early Leonberger imports were exhibited at New York City’s famous Westminster show throughout the 1880s,and the breed has been continuously present in the United States since the 1970s
But the Leonberger was recognized by the American Kennel Club just a mere decade ago
While the Leonberger may have only recently entered the consciousness of American dog lovers
with its characteristic patience and docility
Even if Leonberger owners never get to stand before that lion-crested fountain in a small town on the outskirts of Stuttgart and smile for the camera
The big dog with the equally big heart lying at their feet is the ultimate memento

Work on the German textile machinery producer BRÜCKNER’s new production site has just started
Expected to be completed by the end of 2017
the company will invest 40 million Euro in the new plant building and machinery
the company’s original production site is located in the Bavarian town of Tittmoning
With about 180 employees and workers at this site
the company produces every year about 120 machines and lines
95 per cent of which are exported all around the globe
The main administration of the medium-sized company is with almost 200 employees located in Leonberg near Stuttgart
IT as well as Human Resources and Accounting
In 2004 production of smaller machine components in Leonberg was completely moved to Tittmoning in order to optimize the order workflow
This change allowed to create a big Technology Centre in Leonberg where customers can test several BRÜCKNER machines and develop their textile products further
The requirements for textile machinery and their functions have changed a lot in the last few years
the machines and lines are getting larger and more complex
mainly if they are not supplied to the classical garment industry but used for making technically challenging end products
One of the consequences is that also the production site of the family-owned enterprise has to grow and reposition itself
Since the extension possibilities of the current site are limited
BRÜCKNER took the courageous decision to build a completely new production site on the outskirts of Tittmoning
In planning the new production site particular importance was attached to the environment protection and an especially energy-saving building technique
With a large photovoltaic system on the roof it is possible to save additional energy
A large green space around the building will provide for ecological diversity
The new production halls will offer 25.000 m² space for about 180 workers and employees
In future it will be possible to produce bigger and heavier components and line parts
Machines with working widths of more than seven meters can be installed without problems
and heavy components can be transported more easily
The generous space offers scope for growth and development at BRÜCKNER
and new constructions and line parts can be assembled and intensively tested
“In the decision for the new building it was for us very important that all of our workers and employees could continue since our personnel is our major asset and their experience cannot be replaced
For this reason there was no need for us to move our production abroad
and this loss we cannot afford and we do not want to since we are responsible for our employees and workers
And we are proud of our quality “Made in Germany” and we rely on it also in future” says owner Regina Brückner
it was important for us to get a particularly energy-efficient building
Our new production site would be as efficient and energy-saving as our lines”
Horror film fanatics are dying to learn where and when they can watch Good Boy
an upcoming fright-filled project with a dog as the main character
Good Boy is already being called one of the best and most innovative horror movies of the year
the film tells a supernatural story from a dog's point of view
The movie has been in development for years
but its roots can be traced back to at least 2022 when Leonberg and his wife
Kari Fischer (who is also producing Good Boy)
Since Good Boy is an independent horror film
it has not been picked up by a distributor yet
meaning that it currently does not have a scheduled theatrical or streaming release
it was already premiered as SXSW 2025 in Austin
it was screened four times (twice on March 8
access was given to attendees with Platinum badges and Film & TV badges
with secondary access going to those with a Music badge and/or an Interactive badge
were given the Howl of Fame award for the best canine performance of any film in the festival's lineup
According to an Instagram post from Good Boy's official account
the film's next screening will be at the Overlook Film Festival
The exact schedule for when Good Boy will be screened at Overlook will be revealed on Wednesday
Tickets and passes for the Overlook Film Festival are currently on sale at Overlook's official website
Although Good Boy is an independent film that is only currently being screened at film festivals
that does not mean it won't have a theatrical or streaming release sometime in the future
Some of the biggest horror movies in the last five years made their premieres at film festivals
with two of the most notable being Terrifier and Late Night with the Devil
Terrifier, which has turned into a money-printing franchise
made its world premiere at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival on October 15
It then continued to screen at other festivals until it became so popular that it was distributed to theaters for a limited time on March 15 and 16
Late Night with the Devil (read more about Late Night with the Devil's true meaning here) followed a similar path, premiering at SXSW on March 10, 2023, before releasing in theaters a year later on March 22, 2024.
So, it is possible that Good Boy could receive a theatrical release if it is picked up by a distributor. However, since it only recently premiered at SXSW 2025 on March 8, it would likely be quite a while before its theatrical premiere could happen due to legalities.
Assuming that it would take around a year (or a bit longer) to hit theaters from when it first premiered, that would mean Good Boy would not receive a wide release until Spring or Summer 2026.
If it were to be shown in theaters, it would then take even longer to come to a streaming service. It is impossible to predict exactly when, but if it were to be released theatrically sometime around the middle of 2026, it would likely not begin streaming until later that year.
However, it is always possible that the film could go straight to a streaming service if it is not picked up and distributed to movie theaters. If that were to happen, it still likely wouldn't receive a streaming release until sometime in 2026, though.
At the end of the day, Good Boy's future relies entirely on how it performs at film festivals. It has received mostly positive reviews since its premiere at SXSW, so many eyes will be on its future screenings.
Good Boy premiered at SXSW on March 8, 2025, with its next screening taking place at the Overlook Film Festival.

a haunted house movie with a very unusual point of view
Rather than being filmed and told from the perspective of a human
One of the horror films generating the most buzz on the film festival circuit currently is Good Boy
Good Boy introduces us to Indy and his beloved human Todd
who have left the big city to move in an old family home (rumored to be haunted) in the countryside
But the house isn’t what Indy would have hoped for
hear and sense something dangerous; something that poses a threat to Todd
And Indy will do whatever he has to in order to keep Todd safe
and his own family dog Indy plays the starring role
Good Boy is Leonberg’s feature directorial debut
Leonberg explained that he set out to make a haunted house film that would “capture a singular canine performance without the benefit of a hero who can speak.” The set pieces
even the practical special effects center around the dog’s daily schedule and behaviors
his wife Kari Fischer (who produced the film) and Indy lived in a country home just outside of New York City
filming with a dog takes a lot of patience…and a lot of knowledge about that particular canine
so it worked to Leonberg’s advantage that Indy just happened to be HIS dog
All of Indy’s scenes were shot on closed sets
and the only people present were Leonberg and Fischer
who often had to stand in for several of the movie’s characters
because it allowed the filmmakers to catch Indy’s real affection for his owners
Good Boy also features human actors Larry Fessenden (MaXXXine
Brooklyn 45) and Stuart Rudin (Silence of the Lambs)
It remains to be seen whether or not Good Boy will receive a theatrical release
but if the positive reviews are an indicator
it’s something I am personally looking forward to seeing
