It was a major event for the neighborhood in Lichterfelde with residents told to shut their windows and stay home as the rooftop belched a steady column of black smoke At least four floors of the facility were eventually burned through A month later, The Wall Street Journal reports that the fire at the Diehl Metal factory was an arson attempt carried out under Russia's auspices the outlet reported on Sunday that a NATO intelligence agency had intercepted communications showing Russia's involvement and passed it to German authorities German outlet Bild also reported on the intercepted messages. The Journal reported that Russia intended to hit arms supplies to Ukraine Diehl Metal's parent company also manufactures the IRIS-T anti-air systems given to Kyiv But Diehl Group's arms manufacturer, Diehl Defence, only lists a representative's office in Berlin and its factories and major facilities are spread across southern Germany Meanwhile, the Diehl Metal factory that burned down instead makes parts "primarily for the automotive and electrical industries," according to its website. that Germany hasn't blamed Russia for the fire because the intercepted messages aren't admissible in German courts the fire at the Diehl Metal factory has added fuel to concerns of Russian sabotage attempts on civilian infrastructure and military installations among Ukraine's European allies The Financial Times reported Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs saying the spate of incidents and attempts was "testing our response" and that NATO was still determining how best to act US State Secretary Antony Blinken said on May 31 that the alliance has been tracking sabotage attempts closely "I can tell you that in the meeting of foreign ministers today virtually every ally was seized with this intensification of Russia's hybrid attacks," he said at a press conference in Prague. "We know what they're up to and we will respond both individually and collectively as necessary." Diehl and the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular business hours There is no evidence that this fire was an act of sabotage If the idea is plausible it is because there is ample evidence that Russia’s covert war in Europe is intensifying This article appeared in the Europe section of the print edition under the headline “The shadow war” Discover stories from this section and more in the list of contents George Simion will face Nicusor Dan, a mainstream candidate, in a run-off There are five luxuries it can no longer feasibly afford Friedrich Merz’s career is one of unforced errors and puzzling missteps. It was precisely this fact which prompted the team around the cute Café Fuchs Curtis to realize their vision of a beautiful café in the small corner store. It has become a place to linger. With a clear culinary edge. At Café Fuchs Curtis, no one is dictated to snack on breakfast before noon and cake in the afternoon, so there's cake, breakfast and changing savory dishes all day long, like Fusslig with tomato sugo or lasagna with buffalo mince from Brandenburg. Always in excellent quality, from organic products and prepared on site with much love. While we're on the subject: A lot of love goes into the corner café; looking into the small open kitchen behind the ordering counter, you can feel the good mood in the team. That was part of the concept right from the start: "We need a nice café here, with a nice outdoor area," Masuda Becker said when she saw the store. The various delicacies in the showcase are just as lovingly prepared and topped on site. Bagels and wraps sound just as delicious as granola, muesli and the tempting cakes and pies. Each of them is baked on site according to beloved house recipes, because Café Fuchs Curtis relies on traditionally proven forms of processing. That's why, for example, they ferment the cakes themselves on site.  You can spend a few hours here. Especially when the lush green terrace beckons you outside in the warmer months. By the way, for the Banoffee Pie alone, you can confidently make your way to Lichterfelde West. Especially if you enjoy it with many loved ones at the large family table, which looks as if it were in an enchanted garden. And who knows, maybe regular guest and namesake fox Curtis will come by and say "hello".  Bestellen Sie jetzt Ihren individuellen Newsletter Note: Our newsletter is only available in German Bitte schicken Sie mir bis zum Widerruf meiner Einwilligung den Newsletter mit Informationen zu neuen Beiträgen. Russia has effectively caught the EU in a trap where further restrictions will raise prices further cushioning its revenues despite the best efforts of EU governments said the cash propped up Putin’s war effort and the only way to disable his war machine was to move rapidly away from fossil fuels “Fossil fuel exports are a key enabler of Putin’s regime “Continued energy imports are the major gaps in the sanctions imposed on Russia Everyone who buys these fossil fuels is complicit in the horrendous violations of international law carried out by the Russian military.” Russia in recent days has moved to cut off fossil fuel supplies to Poland and Bulgaria senior adviser at campaigning group Global Witness said Russia’s willingness to violate its own contracts meant businesses now had no excuse for continuing to trade with Russia “Fossil fuel majors and commodity traders who have continued trading in Russian fossil fuels claiming that they are forced to do so by their long-term contracts should take note of the value of the agreements they hold with Russian entities Russia is willing to tear up these contracts to support their own war effort yet European companies supposedly feel compelled to continue financing war crimes out of respect for them,” he said “The corporate enablers of this deadly trade have shown they will stop at nothing to continue profiting from Russia’s blood oil.” CREA’s data found that many fossil fuel companies continued to do high volumes of trade with Russia Germany was the biggest importer in the last two months despite repeated avowals by the government that halting dependence on Russian oil was a priority The country paid about €9bn for imports during the period Italy and the Netherlands were also big importers but as those countries operate major ports which take in products for refining and use in the chemical industries as well as for domestic consumption many of those imports were probably used elsewhere A spokesperson for Shell told the Guardian that the company had taken decisive action in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine “We have announced our intent to exit our joint ventures with Gazprom and related entities and to phase out all Russian hydrocarbons we have stopped all spot purchases of Russian crude liquefied natural gas and of cargos of refined products directly exported from Russia.” And a spokesperson for Exxon said: “We support the internationally coordinated efforts to bring Russia’s unprovoked attack to an end We have not made any new contracts for Russian products since the Russian invasion and there are no deliveries of Russian crude or refined products currently scheduled for the UK We will not invest in new developments in Russia.” Germany is still funding the Russian war chest to the tune of €4.5bn a month Berlin is the largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels,” Bernice Lee a research director at the Chatham House thinktank “The world is looking to Germany to demonstrate strength and determination towards Russia but instead they’re bankrolling the war and blocking a European embargo on Russian oil.” More than 180 firefighters wearing protective suits were on Friday tackling a major blaze at a metal technology firm in Berlin's Lichterfelde area as authorities warned of toxic smoke, APA reports citing The Local Germany.  The blaze broke out in the first floor of metal technology factory ‘Diehl Metal Applications’ on the Stichkanal in Lichterfelde, south-west Berlin around 10:30 am. On Friday afternoon, a fire brigade spokesperson said an area of over 2,000 square metres was on fire in the four-storey building. As of 5 pm, the fire was reportedly still not under control. According to the spokesman, the fire had spread to the roof, with parts of the building collapsing. As the company also stores and processes chemicals in various quantities, there are concerns over harmful fumes in the smoke.  "We can confirm that chemicals are also burning in the building," said the fire service. "Sulphuric acid and copper cyanide were stored there. There is a risk of hydrogen cyanide forming and rising into the air with the smoke." Hydrogen cyanide is a highly toxic substance. The Berlin state government said that residents "in the affected areas of the toxic fumes caused by the fire" were warned through the NINA warning app at midday. According to a fire and rescue spokesperson, no injuries have been reported.  The cause of the fire has not yet been established.  Some early reports suggested that the Diehl Metal location might also store defence products. According to a report by the New Voice of Ukraine, Diehl Defence, which manufactures weapons to be used in Ukraine, operates out of southern Germany and would not be affected by this fire. But there's yet another new one to discover time and again. This one is hidden in S-Bahnhof Botanischer Garten. Practically on your way home from Schlachtensee if you're using the S1. Kaiserdiele's Oliver Boehm told me about it and recommended a visit. So today, a group of friends and I took a trip to Lichterfelde. And while Paleo obviously doesn't allow ice cream, I couldn't resist a few tiny spoons just to assure myself of the quality. Of course you can also get a solid sundae topped with whipped cream and everything. Coffee is delivered by Andraschko, and the seating at Lauter Eis is another comfort point. What makes Lauter Eis stand out, Katharina Lauter asks a regular standing in line about to order. "The ice cream of course. It's scrumptious!" And with that statement, we figured completely unanimously, she was right. Bitte schicken Sie mir bis zum Widerruf meiner Einwilligung den Newsletter mit Informationen zu neuen Beiträgen.
