Porsche BBA Ludwigsburg laid down a marker that other teams have had to follow
MANISA (Türkiye) - Year 3 of the Youth Basketball Champions League opened with a game between Porsche BBA Ludwigsburg and Aliaga Petkimspor
The Germans ran the game from front to back and set the tone for the entire tournament with their pace
The level had been raised and everyone else needed to follow
the level of the competition has gone up a notch regardless of their strong performances
"I think overall the amount of teams trying to play faster
the pace itself is very evident that it's improved a lot
With two wins from two and a place in the Semi-Finals secured after a win over perennial challengers
Ludwigsburg became the first German club to reach the Semi-Finals and also guaranteed the highest-ever finish for a German club in YBCL
this dramatic improvement in their fortunes from last year's seventh place finish wasn't entirely what they expected from the tournament
"We scouted obviously Igokea and Petkimspor really early and there they looked pretty impressive," he said
"It's been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride
we weren't really sure how good we are but after the first result
we were pleasantly surprised," Rhee explained
That element of the unknown in terms of their own team's strength is even more understandable when you consider that
like many of the teams at this year's YBCL
Ludwigsburg used the opportunity of playing in this competition as a tool for recruitment and also evaluating their own talent against some of the continent's best young players
and 2007-born guard Raul Dumnici have all been brought in for this tournament
All four players have grabbed the opportunity presented to them with both hands and taken key roles in the team
from an outside perspective," said Rhee
he brings a high pace bringing up the ball
throwing down a series of above the rim plays in the process
Biel has been all over the stat sheet in the same way that he's all over the court with the style that he plays
Across the two games he's accumulated averages of 19 efficiency points
and 3 assists against Igokea and added the kind of sauce that the fans in Manisa come to see
It's not just been the new recruits getting the job done for Ludwigsburg
This is a team that gets the job done by committee
with eight players playing more than 19 minutes in each game and young Danish international Anton Hjort
producing almost 2 points per minute in his 7 minutes this far
Ludwigsburg have two players returning from last year
who has gone on to make regular contributions with the Ludwigsburg senior team and 2008-born big man Armin Pivac
"Sebastian has become more stable," said Rhee when describing the way his experienced point guard leads the team
"It's something he actually tries to
assert on the guys as well and that's become evident this week."
Pivac is one player that Rhee was especially keen to pick out for praise and primarily because
he's performing possibly the most difficult role in the team
he's our five-man and the position five in our
but also defensively," described Rhee when talking about which player is the key to their success this week
The pivotal nature of Pivac's performances has not only been evident in the results of both games
Pivac is putting up 12.5 points on 67 percent shooting and pulling 7.5 rebounds
When Ludwigsburg faced Petkimspor and their massive frontcourt
including seven-footer Ahmet Kerim Andic and talented power forward Berat Cevik
he played his part in holding them both to just 6 points and 9 rebounds combined
Both players doubled that contribution in their following game
His own numbers in that game were 13 points and 9 rebounds
as he dominated the paint despite being undersized and often matched up against players one year his senior
The Belgians have been one of the hot topics in the whole tournament and brought a unique brand of basketball to the YBCL this week
Rhee was effusive in his praise when describing the threat that the Belgians pose
but having this combination of talent and being this mentally tough
everybody has the freedom to do everything they want
I say they are like a well-oiled machine."
The game tips off at 17:30 local time and you can watch it on the FIBA YouTube channel
my spouse and I woke up early to drive the two hours from Kaiserslautern to Ludwigsburg to catch the Pumpkin Regatta at the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival
Our two-hour drive turned into three-and-a-half
catch the amateur races where visitors could sign up and try their hand at racing the giant gourds
We grabbed some chocolate-covered pumpkin seeds and a bottle of pumpkin prosecco and plopped down in the soft grass
warm sun on our backs as we watched the spectacle and picked favorites to cheer for
we would have brought a change of clothes and joined in
we made our way to the gardens to see the giant sculptures
we spotted stands selling pumpkin-flavored goods
I added shredded chicken and chopped peppers to the pumpkin curry and served it over Jasmine rice
My spouse and I both agree that we wish we had bought a couple more jars
we meandered through the gardens and admired colorful sculptures with the theme of Powerful Women
My favorite was Pippi Longstocking holding her horse above her head
Having heard about the “Hubbard Family,” a yearly fan-favorite display created by Ray Villafane
The charming gourd family did not disappoint
and there was an expert carver doing demonstrations nearby
but it was an exceptionally hot day for fall
I found myself wishing that we had gone on a cooler day
to get the full effect of the fantastic autumn vibes all around us
we opted to try more delicious food and found a stall selling pumpkin fries
We shared a savory plate of fries and sipped colas at a picnic bench in the shade while admiring more of the powerful women sculptures around us and watched children giggle over a pumpkin-smashing section as they stomped around in the mush
I envy those living in Stuttgart so nearby

This is according to a preliminary study to be presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2025
is dedicated to the science of stroke and brain health.
The more time that elapses before a stroke is diagnosed and treated
the more brain tissue is irreparably damaged
and the worse the outcome for the individual
it is crucial to distinguish between a hemorrhagic (bleeding) or ischemic (clot-caused) stroke before giving treatment
which can be delayed for hours while a patient is stabilized
brought to the emergency room and then on to radiology for a brain scan – all the while brain cells are dying
© blueringmedia – stock.adobe.com
“It is crucial to differentiate these two types of stroke because they need opposite treatments
you need to open the blocked blood vessel with clot-busting drugs or physically remove the clot
you need to lower increased blood pressure and give medication to reverse the effects of certain blood-thinning drugs,” said lead study author Love-Preet Kalra
a neurology resident at the RKH Hospital Klinikum Ludwigsburg
Researchers studied whether blood levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) could be useful for quickly diagnosing stroke types
GFAP is a protein specific to the brain released into the bloodstream when brain cells are damaged or destroyed
It is already used in assessing traumatic brain injuries
Treatment to lower blood pressure and reverse blood-thinning medications could be performed in the prehospital setting
leading to a huge change in clinical practice
Kalra and colleagues found that GFAP levels could rapidly distinguish who had a bleeding stroke among unresponsive patients
researchers evaluated whether levels of GFAP could differentiate between hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding) and ischemic stroke (caused by a blood clot)
This assessment was conducted using blood samples collected by the emergency medical services ambulance team before patients arrived at the hospital.
The analysis found that GFAP levels were:
“I was personally surprised by the extremely elevated GFAP values in blood thinner-associated bleeding stroke and the fact that
in moderately or severely affected acute stroke patients
bleeding stroke could be excluded in all cases which showed a GFAP lower than 30 pg/mL,” Kalra said.
Kalra said early GFAP measurements could change how people with stroke symptoms are treated
“Treatment to lower blood pressure and reverse blood-thinning medications could be performed in the prehospital setting
even blood thinners or clot-busting treatment might be applied before people reach the hospital,” Kalra said.
A limitation of this test is that a centrifugation step (separates the components of blood) is currently needed
creating a grey area in which small bleeding strokes might not be identified or mistaken for ischemic strokes in elderly patients
“This study reveals that levels of GFAP
are higher in patients with brain hemorrhages compared to those who have strokes caused by blood clots
This finding suggests that GFAP could serve as a useful prehospital test for assessing brain injuries
the study had a relatively small sample size
both the patient's blood and the GFAP test must be available as a “point of care” test in the field
most ambulances and emergency medical services do not have access to this blood test,” said American Heart Association expert volunteer Louise D
and Phyllis Gough Huffington Distinguished Chair of Neurology at McGovern Medical School; chief of neurology at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center and co-director of UTHealth Neurosciences
Note: The study featured in this news release is a research abstract
Abstracts presented at the American Heart Association’s scientific meetings are not peer-reviewed
and the findings are considered preliminary until published as full manuscripts in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Transient ischemic attack (TIA) emergency department (ED) encounters with incomplete neurovascular imaging were associated with higher odds of subsequent stroke within 90 days
stroke cases and fatalities have been on the decline
according to an analysis of US stroke deaths from 1975 to 2019
The development of a simple blood test for glioblastomas could mean earlier diagnosis and more effective and personalised treatment options against the most common type of malignant brain cancer

Jakob Vestergaard returns home to DenmarkČTK / imago sportfotodienst / Marco WolfJakob Vestergaard, who is currently the head coach of German outfit HB Ludwigsburg, has signed a three-year agreement with Odense Handball, valid from summer 2025, where he replaces Ole Gustav Gjekstad as head coach. Sports director, in Odense Handball Trine Nielsen, is pleased that the situation around the new coach is now resolved.
"Jakob comes with a lot of experience in his luggage and a superb CV, among other things he managed Bietigheim (now Ludwigsburg) to CL-silver last season. We will get a coach who really wants Odense Handball and who I am sure can continue the great work, which has been done with the team in recent seasons."
Jakob Vestergaard has a long coaching career behind him, having led Viborg HK, FC Midtjylland, CSM Bucuresti, Ramnicu Valcea and the German women's national team.
Now Jakob Vestergaard returns to his native country.
"Odense handball is an incredibly exciting, attractive and ambitious club at the highest national and international level. They have a big hunger for success, fantastic support, and a lot of talented players. I also think, in all modesty, that I can contribute to further development at the club. After all, I have tried to stand here as an opponent several times, and it is an absolutely fantastic backdrop."
Jakob Vestergaard has reaped great merits during his coaching career. From 2008-2010, Jakob Vestergaard became Danish champion with Viborg HK, and won "The Double" with the club in 2099/2010. In the same period he won the Champions League twice, and last year he added another trophy to the list when he became German champion with HB Ludwigsburg. Finally Jakob Vestergaard has also won the Romanian championship.
let's take a look at what we learned from the four games of the Youth Basketball Champions League
MANISA (Türkiye) - The opening game of the day saw Porsche BBA Ludwigsburg take their chance at securing the second Semi-Final spot with a 90-77 win over Igokea m:tel
Next up was the battle between Galatasaray and Telekom Baskets Bonn. The Germans got back to winning ways with an 85-75 win over this young Gala squad
The third game of the day saw Tofas Bursa forced to dig deep to find a way past a spirited ERA Nymburk as they eventually dug out a 96-75 win to advance to the Semi-Finals
And the final game of the day gave everyone in Manisa another look at the strength of this Rytas Vilnius roster. They overpowered the hosts 110-51 and claimed the final Semi-Finals berth where they will meet Tofas
Let's have a look at the key takeaways from the day
Ludwigsburg raced into win number two and secured the second spot in the Semi-Finals and they did it by getting contributions from almost their entire roster
Eight of the 11 players named for the game played 15 minutes or more and nine of the 11 scored four points or more
The regular rotation off the bench from head coach Khee Rhee allows this Ludwigsburg team to maintain the type of pace and intensity that the senior team is known for
The stat sheet looked a lot like a characteristic Ludwigsburg win
They won the game on points from turnovers (23-11)
and perhaps most tellingly bench points (43-23)
The win was led by Raul Dumnici with a slick 24 points
and 3 assists on a cool 44.4 percent from behind the arc
The spin move in the post below shows you exactly the flavor that Dumnici brought to the game
Dumnici was supported by Daniel Biel with 13 points and 8 rebounds whilst shooting 55 percent from the field
whilst using his athleticism to make multiple above the rim plays
Ludwigsburg will meet the winner of Group B
Filou Oostende in the Semi-Finals after they topped their group on Gameday 2
Telekom Baskets Bonn will feel much better for their first win in the YBCL
Not only did they play much better than their debut game against Oostende
but they also now have a shot at a very respectable fifth place finish
Galatasaray had the lead to end the first quarter and into the start of the second when they were still up 27-24 with eight minutes to play in the quarter
From there Bonn took over the game and ended up leading the contest for 33 minutes of the 40
Those 23 points on the fastbreak and 27 points from the bench illustrated Bonn's all round control of the game
Head coach Francesco Tubiana's squad were more intelligent with shot selection and more clinical in execution than they were in their first game
this felt like another learning experience for their young roster against an older and more savvy opponent
Kenan Reinhart underlined why he was picked out as one of the players to watch at the tournament with 24 points
and 5 assists on 47 percent shooting from the field and 80 percent from two-point range
Point guard Gaston Nguyen Manh also had a standout double-double
with 13 points and 11 assists as he controlled tempo and found his teammates for easy looks throughout the game
Tofas went into the game strong favorites in the knowledge that the Spartak Office Shoes team they had already beaten were too strong for their next opponents
has a funny way of never going as expected and Nymburk seemed to catch Tofas by surprise with their intensity to start the game
They stormed out into a 16-8 lead with five minutes to play in the first quarter and led the game for all but two minutes of the first half
With four minutes to go in the third quarter
Tofas reeled off six unanswered points to go up 59-56 and they never looked back from there
A 10-0 run in the fourth quarter took the game away from Nymburk as Tofas found an extra gear that the Czechs weren't able to keep up with
1.96 meter point guard Kerem Corumlular exploded into life in this game with 21 points
He threw down several huge dunks in the game and the last one put the exclamation mark on the end of that 10-0 run that broke this game open
Yucel Cagin Basaran also had another huge game with 18 points
He leads the tournament for pockets picked so far with 10 steals in 2 games
Rytas Vilnius have a motto that says Nobody likes us and we don't care
And when you need to take down the tournament hosts in front of a packed home crowd
you have to get comfortable with being unpopular
The good thing for Rytas is that when it comes to the YBCL
that motto isn't true because we love to see the intensity
physicality and selfless team basketball that Rytas bring to this tournament
This game was never really a contest and no doubt Manisa BBSK will have gained a lot from experiencing the level it takes to be the champions in the YBCL
Rytas led the game front to back and gave 13 minutes or more to all 12 players on their roster
2007-born power forward Gabrielius Bubnys continued his strong campaign by dropping a double-double
whilst shooting 54 percent from the field and 75 percent from deep
Adomas Pocius also put up a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds
but there's not much more to say about this game
other than to say Rytas were just too good
Next up for them is a familiar foe in the shape of Tofas Bursa in what should be a classic Semi-Final this Saturday
Jack and his “I’m the king of the world” on the ship’s bow
Rose descending the opulent staircase aboard the luxury liner
And of course the desperate scramble for lifeboats as the vessel sank into the frigid Atlantic Ocean
When I learned about a traveling Titanic exhibition in the German city of Ludwigsburg
Visitors can get a look at hundreds of relics recovered from the ocean floor where the Titanic now rests
The exhibition also explains the ship’s history in detail and chronicles the lead-up to its collision with an iceberg on April 15
I’m not sure I would have been so excited to go if it hadn’t been for James Cameron’s 1997 movie “Titanic,” which made a big impression when I first saw it nearly 30 years ago
I was a little disappointed that the exhibition lacked any mention of or references to the blockbuster film
But there are assorted touches hinting that the program designers made their displays with the movie and its fans in mind
one highlight is the iconic grand staircase reconstructed to Titanic specifications
It looked as I remembered it portrayed on the big screen
such as the more than 200 artifacts from the wreckage
Among them was a well-known perfumer from the time
He was traveling with some of his perfume samples
the perfume can still be smelled when the vials are uncased
according to a description provided in the exhibition
the exhibition deals with the sinking of the Titanic and what precipitated it
ranging from the difficulty of spotting icebergs under a full moon to the disappearance of the lookout binoculars in the rush to get the ship ready to sail
the ship went under and nearly 1,500 people died
many from hypothermia as they floated in the 28-degree water
To convey an inkling of what that chill felt like
the display includes a huge block of an actual iceberg and invites visitors to put their hands on it
our family discussion turned to movie night
I insisted on introducing my kids to the story of the Titanic through the eyes of Jack and Rose
I realized only later that I had forgotten about the nude scene
That required some unexpected lessons of a wholly different kind

Hungarian powerhouse Györi Audi ETO KC returned to the EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 after almost two months and clinched a dramatic last-second 25:24 win against HB Ludwigsburg in the first leg of the quarter-finals
Györ had a direct quarter-final ticket and had to wait for their opponents to go through the play-offs
which turned out to be their well known rivals from the last season's final
In an exciting match where it could have gone either way
Györ took the win thanks to a last-second penalty goal from Kristina Jörgensen
HB Ludwigsburg (GER) vs Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) 24:25 (14:16)
Some teams just know how to win the first leg of a quarter-final
staying unbeaten in the opening away match of the EHF Champions League Women quarterfinals for the seventh consecutive time
excluding the cancelled 2019/20 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic
The only time they did not win the first leg in that span was back in the 2016/17 season when they lost 31:32 to Metz
they bounced back in the return leg and qualified for the EHF FINAL4 Women
Györ once again proved they know exactly how to handle pressure
The German side gave their best to finally break the Hungarian side and kept the game tight
but just like in Budapest in 2024 and both group phase matches this season
Goalkeeper Sandra Toft once again proved why she is among the best in her position
The shot-stopper added another 15 saves to her tally
finishing the match at 40.54 per cent save efficiency and delivered crucial stops in the final moments of the game
allowing Györ to make a comeback and ultimately grab the narrow lead ahead of the duel in Hungary

as Györi Audi ETO KC secured their second win in the quarter-finals against the German side
Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs HB Ludwigsburg (GER) 29:22 (13:10)
Györ did not impress in the two legs of the quarter-finals from an attacking standpoint
but their defence – the top so far in the EHF Champions League Women this season - was once again on the top of the game
conceding only 46 goals in 120 minutes against HB Ludwigsburg
The reigning champions are back in the EHF FINAL4
in a fantastic display of consistency in the last decade
as the team with the largest number of trophies in the European premium competition – six – will have to add their seventh title in the last 12 seasons
Nine players scored at least one goal for Györ
which used the same recipe as they did throughout the whole season
one shy of the record of 15 wins in a season
a record which will they surpass provided they win the title this season
This was also the last match as a coach for HB Ludwigsburg for Jakob Vestergaard
the mastermind of last season’s fantastic run
which saw the German champions finish as runners-up
as Vestergaard heads over to Odense Håndbold
the first qualified team this season to the EHF FINAL4
QUARTER-FINALS PREVIEW: Four close clashes in the EHF Champions League Women quarter-finals will decide EHF FINAL4 participants
HB Ludwigsburg conceded a 23:26 loss in the Match of the Week against Krim Mercator Ljubljana, but the German champions progressed to the EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 quarter-finals with a 54:47 win on aggregate
Odense Håndbold also made it to the quarter-finals for the third season in a row
beating Storhamar Handball Elite 25:21 in the second leg
MOTW: Krim Mercator Ljubljana (SLO) vs HB Ludwigsburg (GER) 26:23 (10:11)
Ludwigsburg could play it cautious in the second match against Krim Mercator Ljubljana
which needed a miracle in the Match of the Week to return for the quarter-finals after a three-year drought
and did not tremble even when Krim boasted a five-goal lead with seven minutes to go
Right back Ana Gros did her utmost to help the Slovenian side mount a comeback
after the disappointing display in the first leg
Ludwigsburg made it to the quarter-finals for the second time in a row
taking advantage of yet another fantastic match from goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen
who saved 15 shots for a 38.4 saving efficiency

having 203 saves in 16 matches this season
61 more than any other player in the competition
Odense Håndbold (DEN) vs Storhamar Handball Elite (NOR) 25:21 (16:11)
Sheltered by a 13-goal win in the first leg
Odense did not enjoy the best of starts against Storhamar and were down 4:1 after only six minutes
But with Storhamar only winning two away matches in their history in the EHF Champions League Women
it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Norwegian side
As all but one outfield player scored at least one goal for Odense
the Danish side quickly bounced back with a 4:0 run and had a comfortable five-goal lead
which had Maren Aardahl and Helene Gigstad Fauske combine for 10 goals
registering the largest aggregate win in the play-offs and will gear up for the doubleheader against FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria in the quarter-finals

Hungary's prestigious ̋ Audi ETO KC Hungary defeated HB Ludwigsburg Germany to advance to the semifinals of the EHF Women's Champions League in the 2024/25 season.

In this match, Ryu Eun-hee contributed to the team's victory by scoring three goals, and Christina Jörgensen scored a team-high nine points. In addition, goalkeeper Hatadou Sako became the top contributor to the semifinals with 14 saves with a 41% ERA.
As a result, Kyori Audi has made it to the Final Four for nine consecutive seasons, and achieved the feat of reaching the Final Four for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. Kyory, who also set the record for the most goals scored team (8,973) in EHF Champions League history, now has only 27 goals left until the 9,000 goal mark.
In addition to Jorgensen, Dione Housheer, Bruna de Paula and Lucas Victoria scored four goals each in the match, making a variety of ̋. On the other hand, for HB Ludwigshburg, Kaba Gassama and Xenia Smits fought hard with four goals each, but they collapsed due to lack of concentration at the end of the game.
Early in the first half, it was a tight race, but Sako's consecutive saves and Jorgensen's 7-meter draw score tilted the flow toward Kyodo Audi. Kyodo Audi was trailing by 7-6 and one goal, but the gap widened again and the first half ended with a 13-10 lead.
In the second half, Dione Hauscher scored back-to-back goals and widened the gap to six goals, and Sako effectively blocked the opponent's counterattack and took full control of the game.
He allowed a chase to reach four goals midway through the second half, but Christina Jorgensen's back-to-back goal in the final minute closed the gap at 29-22.
Audi coach Per Johansson said in an interview with the European Handball Federation, "Rutwig-Hiburg has seen remarkable growth in the last two years. We are the only team that stopped them in the Champions League this season. Today, I didn't fall easily for 50 minutes, and I had a very fair fight."
He also said: "Despite the injury absence of the previous week, Anna Lagerqvist and Lynn Blom filled the position brilliantly, and Kelly Dulfer and Jorgensen's performances were also crucial. We showed true teamwork today."
Kyodo Audi will clash for the European top position at the EHF FINAL4 stage at the MVM Dome in Budapest from May 31 to June 1.

punctuated by a three-point play by Assem Marei on a reverse lay up to get back into the game and ultimately roll to victory
Nate Linhart carried the visitors on his back in the fourth
scoring 10 of his 14 points to lead his squad to the crucial Leg 1 win
.@mediBayreuth erased an 11-point deficit & take a 5-point lead to the Second Leg of the Battle of 🇩🇪! #BasketballCL #Road2Final4
A post shared by Basketball Champions League (@basketballcl) on Mar 27
Five players reached double figures for the visitors
and De'Mon Brooks and Assem Marei had 13-a-piece.Thomas Walkup was impressive for Ludwigsburg on his way to 19 points
whilst Adika Peter-McNeilly had 13 and Kerron Johnson added 9 assists with his 12 points."I think it was a very
well played," medi Bayreuth Head Coach Raoul Korner said
the keys were to control the offensive rebounds
I think we did a better job in the second half to do so."Turnovers are still an issue
it's very difficult to look after the basketball against such a physical
I think we we were down 11 towards the end and different guys take over; Nate as an example in the last quarter
took the team on his shoulders offensively and we digged in defensively and got some stops."We were able to bounce back and I think that's the key
Mistakes are going to happen against a team like this because they're so aggressive
We played possession by possession and I think we put ourselves in a very good position for the second game."Ludwigsburg's Thomas Walkup remained optimistic for the second leg
despite the defeat."Credit to them for coming in here
"Now we've got to do the same thing to them in their place
Five points is obviously an obstacle but something that we think we can do
We've just got to go in there with the right focus and physicality to do it."Ludwigsburg held on to an 18-10 lead after the opening quarter following a slow start from both teams which saw them struggle to connect
Walkup hit a deep three in the dying seconds of the period to give Ludwigsburg a double-digit lead
but Assem Marei hammered a dunk home to beat the buzzer and end the quarter
restoring their lead.A fast start to the second period from Bayreuth saw them fight back
as James Robinson knocked down a jumper to pull them within three just a minute into the period. The visitors kept the pressure on; a 6-0 run sparked by Robinson saw Bayreuth pull back within three
with a little over 5 minuts to play in the half as Ludwigsburg called timeout
Peter-McNeilly knocked down a triple straight out of the timeout to steady the ship for the home side
but Bayreuth were refusing to go away.An impressive tip from Gabe York saw Bayreuth take the lead
to take 41-33 lead into the break.Lead changes would continue to occur in the third
to give Ludwigsburg a 62-57 lead heading into the final period. And when Walkup hit a huge three from deep to take his personal tally to 15 and give Ludwigsburg a 9 point cushion
it appeared as though the home team had finally broken the game open
before pulling away down the stretch behind Linhart's 10 fourth quarter points...
A blood test may have the ability to rapidly distinguish haemorrhagic strokes (brain bleeds) from ischaemic (clot-caused) strokes
even before patients with stroke symptoms reach the emergency room
according to a preliminary study set to be presented at the 2025 International Stroke Conference (ISC; 5–7 February
“It is crucial to differentiate these two types of stroke
because they need opposite treatments,” said lead study author Love-Preet Kalra (RKH Hospital Klinikum Ludwigsburg
you need to lower increased blood pressure and give medication to reverse the effects of certain blood-thinning drugs.”
researchers examined whether blood levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) could be useful for quickly diagnosing stroke types
GFAP is a protein specific to the brain that is released into the bloodstream when brain cells are damaged or destroyed
It is already used in assessing traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
The study included 353 people (average age
75 years; 47% women) reaching the emergency room within six hours of the onset of stroke symptoms
People were excluded from the analysis if they had previously had a brain tumour
or if they had experienced a stroke or TBI within the past three months
Brain imaging diagnosed intracerebral haemorrhage in 76 patients
and conditions mimicking stroke—such as seizure or migraine—in 19 patients
Blood was drawn before patients reached the emergency room at RKH Hospital Klinikum Ludwigsburg and tested for GFAP levels using a portable blood analyser
with GFAP levels being compared between groups based on diagnoses at hospital discharge
researchers evaluated whether levels of GFAP could differentiate between haemorrhagic and ischaemic strokes
This assessment was conducted using blood samples collected by the emergency medical services ambulance team before patients arrived at the hospital
“I was personally surprised by the extremely elevated GFAP values in blood thinner-associated bleeding stroke and the fact that
bleeding stroke could be excluded in all cases which showed a GFAP lower than 30pg/mL,” Kalra stated
Kalra believes early GFAP measurements could change how people with stroke symptoms are treated
“Treatment to lower blood pressure and reverse blood-thinning medications could be performed in the prehospital setting
leading to a huge change in clinical practice,” she commented
even blood thinners or clot-busting treatment might be applied before people reach the hospital.”
a limitation of this test is that a centrifugation step—which involves separating the components of blood—is currently needed
creating a grey area in which small bleeding strokes might not be identified or may be mistaken for ischaemic strokes in elderly patients
are higher in patients with brain haemorrhages compared to those who have strokes caused by blood clots,” said American Heart Association (AHA) expert volunteer Louise McCullough (McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston
“This finding suggests that GFAP could serve as a useful prehospital test for assessing brain injuries
the study had a relatively small sample size and
both the patient’s blood and the GFAP test must be available as a ‘point-of-care’ test in the field
most ambulances and emergency medical services do not have access to this blood test.”

Every three years, ICLEI hosts the ICLEI World Congress to showcase how subnational actors advance sustainable urban development worldwide. The most recent installment, ICLEI World Congress 2024
converged over 1,500 global attendees to celebrate the vital role of international networks in connecting cities
Aligning equity and climate mitigation priorities is crucial for developing sustainable cities that cater to all residents
Cities worldwide are increasingly recognizing the importance of integrating social equity into their climate strategies and actions
integrating social equity in climate mitigation plans and programs may prove challenging due to a variety of social
including and addressing the needs of impacted residents (especially disadvantaged communities)
overcoming departmental silos between social and environmental departments in city administrations
and designing subsidy programs inclusively to ensure fair resource distribution
A prime example of efforts to integrate social equity into climate interventions is the INCLU:DE project
which supports five German cities in designing and implementing just and inclusive climate actions
Implemented by ICLEI and supported by Stiftung Mercator
INCLU:DE draws on the best practices of international frontrunner cities to align local climate and equity priorities
as well as develop a methodology for scaling up just and inclusive climate action
The Malmö Commitment on Inclusive and Equitable Communities pursues a similar goal
By positioning local and regional governments at the center of the global response to today’s challenges
international pioneers and supporters are encouraged to prioritize social equity and inclusion at the heart of their sustainability and climate neutrality strategies
equity-focused reporting and monitoring mechanisms are refined to further strengthen collective efforts
By adopting such inclusive and innovative strategies
cities can overcome local just transition challenges and create synergies between equity and climate goals
Let’s now explore how the cities of Malmö and Cleveland embed equity into their overarching climate strategies and examine concrete climate actions with equity components in the cities of Ludwigsburg
These efforts aim to foster a socially sustainable city where all residents can benefit from climate-friendly practices
The Cleveland Climate Action Plan includes a Racial Equity Tool
developed by an advisory committee to assess each action objective for equity relevance
with a focus on just distribution of the benefits of climate protection efforts
The tool is designed in a way that it can work as a template for other local governments to advance racial equity and resilience in policymaking
Ludwigsburg’s commitment to ensuring equity in climate mitigation is evident in its subsidy scheme for plug-in solar devices
the program faced challenges as low-income households struggled with the upfront costs of solar devices
the city introduced a “carefree package” for low-income residents
Beneficiaries can now indicate their interest online
and the city’s partners handle installation and payment directly
This revamped subsidy scheme ensures that low-income households can participate in and benefit from renewable energy initiatives without financial hurdles; the participation of such households has leaped from two applications under the previous scheme to 60
Rosario has effectively embedded social equity considerations into its efforts to combat food waste. Through its RecupeBAR project
the city has contributed to the social and labor inclusion of urban waste pickers by involving them in collecting food from vendors at two major markets—food that would otherwise be discarded
This collected food is either donated to local food banks or transformed into products like jams that can be sold
the city not only prevents food waste but also creates job opportunities and fosters capacity building within the community
the project contributes to emission reduction by diverting food from landfills
With extreme heat and drought especially affecting disadvantaged communities, the city of Teresina has prioritized urban afforestation under the Transformative Urban Coalitions project to mitigate climate change and enhance urban resilience
Targeted primarily at low-income neighborhoods
this initiative to sow native plants and food seedlings substantially improves access to green space for these communities
Positive equity outcomes include the reduction of heat effects
but also improved food security as well as mental and physical health benefits
International exchanges at the ICLEI World Congress 2024 provided an excellent opportunity to discuss and address the complexities of integrating equity and climate mitigation objectives
“The clear message of this ICLEI World Congress is that we urgently need to take responsibility for creating sustainable cities
The choices we make now will determine whether we are able to accelerate a fair and inclusive green transition
I’m fully convinced if we act as one determined ICLEI community
we can achieve sustainability,” stated Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh
during her final remarks at the closing ceremony
