The global shipping company DHL says it has resumed shipping packages valued over $800 in value to individual U.S
just one week after saying it was halting such shipments due to new U.S
In a post on its website
DHL said the policy reversal that took effect Monday came in response to discussions with the Trump administration over recent logistical challenges in international shipping
"This decision follows constructive dialogue between DHL and the U.S
who demonstrated a strong willingness to understand our operational and technical challenges
and who agreed that it was imperative to act quickly in the interest of U.S
DHL said the 10% tariffs introduced by the Trump administration had resulted in more intensive inspections of packages over $800 entering the U.S.
inundating the shipper with extra work and causing delays
The company said last week that it was experiencing a "surge in formal customs clearances
DHL suspended business-to-consumer shipments valued over $800
though business-to-business deliveries continued
following its dialogue with federal officials
DHL said shipments valued between $800 and $2,500 can once again enter the U.S
through Customs and Border Patrol's "informal" entry process
Under the formal entry process, CBP says shippers may have to complete "extensive paperwork" and file a bond
while informal entry is a "less arduous" process in which CBP prepares the paperwork and calculates customs duties
DHL said that shift would allow it to resume normal operations
the company warned consumers that they may still experience delays as the company clears its backlog

Approximately 2,200 employees of the Daimler plant in Ludwigsfelde
Production of the small trucks manufactured there is to be discontinued at the end of the decade
Ludwigsfelde produces the so-called “open versions” of the Sprinter
they have been equipped with combustion engines
but an electrically powered version is to be added from next year
The closed “panel van” models—electric and conventional—are produced at the plant in Düsseldorf
Daimler plans to launch a new electric panel van from 2028
which will be manufactured exclusively in Eastern Europe
In the course of the planned restructuring
the “open versions” will then be transferred from Ludwigsfelde to Düsseldorf
Production of the internal combustion vehicles will be successively discontinued by the end of the decade
This means the end of production in Ludwigsfelde
The works council and the IG Metall union have already begun talks with management to push through these plans against the workforce
Around the world, major auto companies are using the switch to electric mobility to launch a general attack on wages and jobs. The Daimler corporation just announced the layoff of 3,600 workers at Daimler Truck in Brazil earlier this month and is also planning drastic cuts and worse conditions for the workforce at its main plants in Germany
has been producing commercial vehicles since 1965
Daimler took over the plant to take advantage of cheap wages in eastern Germany
and the “Sprinter” model has been manufactured here since 2006
The company wants to position itself for the battle to re-divide the global market by increasing the exploitation of its workforce in Eastern Europe
Yet the Daimler/Mercedes van business is already highly profitable
“In the first half of the year,” finance daily Handelsblatt reported on September 9
“the Stuttgart-based company achieved an operating return of 9.4 percent on revenues of 7.8 billion euros and 190,000 vehicles sold
there is ‘need for action,’ says division head Mathias Geisen
‘We need to significantly improve our cost position.’”
Mercedes signed a letter of intent with US-based start-up Rivian on September 8
Rivian is apparently considered an ideal partner because it is known for its unscrupulous methods
The company manufactures pickup trucks and SUVs in the US
It went public last year to raise capital in the slipstream of the e-mobility boom
it cashed in by selling shares in a way that was disproportionate to its real business performance: at times
it reached a market capitalization of up to $140 billion
its stock value has since shrunk to less than a quarter of that peak
Rivian is apparently serving as a means to restructure the auto industry
Amazon CEO Bezos has also secured a double-digit stake in the company while awarding Rivian a major contract for 100,000 delivery vehicles
The August 26 edition of Manager Magazin sees this as part of the push by big internet and tech companies into the automotive industry
Anyone familiar with the working conditions at Amazon knows what this means for the workforce
the three main sites that come into question to produce e-vans are located in Hungary
The first European Mercedes-Benz passenger car plant outside Germany was opened there in March 2012
Compact models such as the A-Class or the CLA come off the production line here
Chinese battery manufacturer CATL also plans to build a Gigafactory to supply European auto plants
manufacturers in Hungary are now having major problems finding enough workers
Mercedes subsidiaries produce automatic transmissions at the Sebes and Cugir sites
In an analysis of the cooperation between Mercedes and Rivian
trade journal Automobilwoche of September 13 emphasizes above all the “cost advantages compared with the other locations.” However
the peripheral location and lower qualification of the workforce speak against Romania
Mercedes began producing engines in 2019 and started battery production in 2021
Jawor currently employs around 1,300 workers
The plant is being talked about in the press as a promising candidate for new e-van production
This brief overview already shows that Daimler/Mercedes workers are dealing with a corporation that operates internationally and scours the world for the cheapest labour
The only way for the workforce to defend their interests is to organize themselves worldwide
it is necessary to form independent rank-and-file action committees that take the defence of jobs and wages into their own hands
This is the only way to prevent management and the unions from negotiating either shutdowns
massive job cuts or a drastic deterioration of conditions for one plant after another behind the backs of the workforce
“The planned organisation of production will bring changes,” declared Ergun Lümali
Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the General Works Council of Mercedes-Benz Group AG
“which makes it all the more important now to enter into constructive talks together with the works councils in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde.” This can only be understood as a threat to the workers
IG Metall and the works council reacted to management’s announcement that the next generation of the Sprinter van would no longer be built in Ludwigsfelde with the familiar demand for “concepts for the future.” They immediately began negotiations with management behind closed doors
When resentment among the workforce boiled over
they invited management to a factory meeting on September 29
where it is to explain and justify its plans
the leader of the Ludwigsfelde branch of IG Metall
explained in a video for the workforce: “It is now a matter of demanding that the future be secured
of demanding a concept for the future,” repeating this demand several times
The site “does not deserve to die in instalments” and the workforce should ask the Management Board “the appropriate questions.”
there is nothing to negotiate with the Daimler/Mercedes board
Management is determined to push through its attacks
Their windy promises that they want to explore “maintaining the site” without production taking place are completely worthless
This is shown by the experience of numerous workforces at other auto plants
most recently Opel Bochum and Ford Saarlouis
whose plants were or are being completely wound up after years of stalling
the so-called “Digital Factory Campus” was opened a few days ago on the site of the Mercedes plant there
where production of components for internal combustion engines is also being phased out
High-performance electric motors for the AMG sports brand are to be built there from 2025
What will actually happen by then and how many of the current 2,370 employees will keep their jobs is completely unclear
The company has only promised to employ around 200 software developers
This pathetic sell-out is being celebrated as a great victory by the union and those in power
The union’s policy is to act as co-manager and company police
With its talk of “concepts for the future,” it wants to push through a massive deterioration in working conditions and ultimately the closure of the plant against the anger of the workers
it is deliberately playing off the workers of the various countries and the various plants against each other
one that places the interests of the workers higher than the profit interests of the company
They are being asked to pay for the war that NATO is waging against Russia in Ukraine
for energy costs that are skyrocketing because of sanctions against Russia
The WSWS calls on Daimler/Mercedes workers in Ludwigsfelde and throughout Germany to build rank-and-file action committees to fight the nationalist and pro-business policies of IG Metall and its works council representatives
The only way forward is to join forces with auto and truck workers in Eastern Europe
To do this, the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC) has been formed and is gaining support around the world. In the US in particular, workers in the auto industry have formed strike committees independent of the corrupt unions. There, socialist Will Lehman is running for president of the UAW auto workers union
He is winning enormous support with his demands for the abolition of the union bureaucracy
and international unity of the working class
Workers interested in this struggle should contact the WSWS either via WhatsApp at +491633378340 or via the form below
In the medium-sized town of Ludwigsfelde in Brandenburg
one of the first WBS 70 prefabricated buildings in Germany is currently being refurbished in series
The project could become a blueprint for the rapid
economical and tenant-friendly refurbishment of large prefabricated housing stock in Germany and Eastern Europe
Team Leader Construction and Housing Industry at the dena Competence Centre for Serial Refurbishment / Energiesprong DE
five-storey building block at Albert-Schweitzer-Straße 2-14 will have a new building envelope made from 228 prefabricated timber façade elements
which will be prefabricated in the factory
triple-glazed windows and a fibre cement surface
The 82 tenants will remain in their flats during the renovation work
As the work can be carried out quickly on site and the intervention in the flats is minimal
serial refurbishments can be carried out while the tenants are still living there
The municipal housing association ‘Märkische Heimat’ in Ludwigsfelde is investing around 6.7 million euros in the project
the block in Ludwigsfelde is also connected to the public district heating network
which is currently still largely based on fossil fuels
An 82 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof generates 17.9 kWh of green electricity per square metre of living space
This is fed into the public electricity grid and thus reduces the CO2 emissions of the fossil district heating supply by 50 percent in purely mathematical terms
the building is therefore a zero-emissions house
the energy efficiency of the Ludwigsfeld prefabricated building will improve from the energy efficiency midfield C to the ambitious new-build level A+
The primary energy requirement and CO2 emissions will be reduced by around 65 percent.
the WBS 70 is the most frequently built type of prefabricated building in the GDR
As prefabricated buildings were already planned according to the principles of serial and modular prefabrication and built in large panel construction
they are ideally suited for serial refurbishment
The compact structure of the predominantly five to six-storey buildings and the predefined façade grid of 6 x 2.80 metres offer the best conditions
The serial refurbishment solution developed for the WBS 70 prefabricated building in Ludwigsfelde can also be transferred to the P2 prefabricated building type and the QP series and can therefore bring more than 50 percent of the East German prefabricated building stock onto a climate-friendly course
cost-reducing scaling effects take effect more quickly and on a completely different scale
The project in Ludwigsfelde can therefore have a catalysing effect that raises the serial refurbishment market as a whole to a new level.

Home › News Releases › “Intelligent production”: Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde plant focusing on new technologies and efficiency in van production
Plant Manager Sebastian Streuff: “The Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde plant is the benchmark in intelligent vehicle production
It’s what future plants should look like: streamlined
highly efficient logistics; and faultless assembly.”
It’s really quiet in the Sprinter assembly hall south of Berlin
Unexpectedly quiet for a place that builds more than 200 large vans every single day
Whereas previously there were countless wire baskets
shelves and carriers full of material all around the assembly lines
and the employees had to pick the correct parts for each van themselves
now the scene is dominated by “driverless transport trucks”
These driverless transport trucks supply the assembly personnel on the line with prepared goods baskets from the logistics and picking areas fully autonomously
In short: intelligent production at the Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde plant
“The Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde plant is the benchmark when it comes to intelligent vehicle production
highly efficient logistics; and faultless assembly,” says Sebastian Streuff
Manager of Mercedes-Benz Werk Ludwigsfelde GmbH since 1 June 2015
the Ludwigsfelde plant has taken its future into its own hands with its highly qualified and highly motivated workforce
Today it is a shining example of the use of innovative production systems in the Mercedes-Benz Vans worldwide production network
I am therefore all the more pleased to be shaping the future together with the team here in Ludwigsfelde.”
the Mercedes-Benz Ludwigsfelde plant is one of the largest industrial employers in Brandenburg
and Daimler’s third largest van assembly plant worldwide
Ludwigsfelde is also the only European production site at which the open model variants of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter “world van” (pickups and chassis cabs) are produced for a wide range of vehicle bodies
the plant had a successful year and increased its output by 13 percent to over 48,200 units
And this positive trend is continuing in 2015
with capacity utilization remaining at a very high level
Since 1991 over 600,000 vehicles have left this assembly plant
which covers a total area of 540,000 square meters with a production area of 182,000 square meters
This total goes up by over 200 vans per day in a two-shift operation – with the vehicles being exported to around 130 countries
The plant therefore plays a key role in the Mercedes-Benz Vans global production network
One example of this is door pre-assembly: whereas previously there were carriers practically nose to tail all the way along the line
today there are just a few tool carts and data terminals
Everything else an assembler needs to fit a side door is today presented to the correct vehicle on the line just in sequence and just in time by a driverless transport truck in what is known as “carsets”
Here the complexity between assembly and logistics is extremely high: on the production line the employees assemble the Sprinter in over 350 different combinations
Consequently there is a different sequence for each vehicle
and respectively each Sprinter needs to have different components fitted
exactly the right parts for each Sprinter are prepared in a carset cart and delivered to the assembly line
The driverless transport truck even takes care of unloading fully automatically: after arrival
the carsets are positioned directly to the line
all the worker has to do is take the correct parts truck
attach it to the pendant and start installing the parts
There are clear advantages: greatly improved workstation ergonomics
more space on the line and a reduced accident risk thanks to the absence of forklifts
Plant Manager in Ludwigsfelde up until the end of May and now responsible for worldwide assembly planning at Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars
states: “We recognized the necessity of a very flexible factory at an early stage
continuously optimized production processes and
ensured close coordination between management
Only in this way it was possible to take such huge strides forward in terms of efficiency
quality and added value here at the site in such a short time
That is our recipe for success here in Ludwigsfelde.”
The high level of investment in Ludwigsfelde shows how continuous further development of the site has paid dividends
In October 2014 Mercedes-Benz Vans defined the long-term strategy for production of the Sprinter successor model
Mercedes-Benz Vans will also produce the next generation of the large van in Germany
Mercedes-Benz Vans will be investing €150 million in Ludwigsfelde alone to modernize the body shop
Sebastian Streuff: “The planned substantial investment emphasizes the importance of the Ludwigsfelde plant
It’s a good sign for the workforce and the entire Berlin-Brandenburg region.”

Home › News Releases › Commercial Vehicle News Releases › More successful than ever before – the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter celebrates its first year of production
The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is continuing its success story
One year after the start of production on July 1
the Sprinter continues to be the Number 1 large van in the segment for vehicles weighing around 3.5 tons GVW
Mercedes-Benz Vans sold around 134.000 units (previous year 116.000) of the new model in Europe and North America alone
This translates into a sales increase of 15%
compared to the same period of the previous years
the new Sprinter has substantially increased its market share to the record level of over 30%
Daimler’s van division has correspondingly increased the vehicle output at its two German production plants
More than 700 vehicles are currently rolling off the assembly line in Düsseldorf each day
while the plant in Ludwigsfelde produces over 200 vans
The Sprinter is sold in over 130 countries worldwide; more than 75% of the vehicles are exported
our new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter once again raised the bar for the van sector,” says Volker Mornhinweg
“The new Sprinter is unmatched with regard to safety
and it is still the pioneer in the large vans segment
The high demand shows that we have the best van on the market.”
Mercedes-Benz Vans invested about €300 million in the new Sprinter
Large amounts were earmarked for the plants in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde
where the investments flowed into new production equipment and state-of-the-art machinery
“Because the new Sprinter is our most important product and production project of the coming years
we correspondingly made our locations fit for the future,” says Frank Klein
“The investments are paying off each and every day
because only top-quality vehicles roll off the assembly lines at our plants in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde
I would particularly like to thank our teams at the two plants
since their commitment and hard work are making this high production load possible
a glance at our full order books lets us look forward to the second half of 2014.”
Located in the segment for vehicles with around 3.5 tons GVW
the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter straddles the line between cars and trucks
as defined by German traffic law at the time the van was introduced
the innovative vehicle concept has not only met with a great response in Germany
as the pioneering van is also rapidly conquering markets abroad
the van is sold in thousands of variants in around 130 countries worldwide
That the Sprinter has become a global vehicle is also reflected in its production locations
In addition to rolling off the line in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde
That makes the Sprinter a truly global vehicle and one of the key pillars of the “Vans goes global” growth strategy of Mercedes-Benz Vans
The strategy is consistently globalizing the division’s business and exploiting additional earnings potential in new growth markets
Ahead of the start of production of the redesigned Sprinter van
Mercedes-Benz Vans is bringing new connected series production technology online for greater flexibility and efficiency at the plant in Ludwigsfelde near Berlin
Mercedes-Benz Vans is bringing new connected series production technology online for greater flexibility and efficiency at the main plant in Ludwigsfelde near Berlin
Employees benefit from the increasing digitisation in production by being relieved of routine tasks
the unit will spend EUR200m expanding intelligent production
Operations head Frank Klein said: “We want to realise potentials throughout the entire production process with new technologies such as RFID
Our production operations around the world are to be fully digitised by 2025.”
RFID technology (radio-frequency identification) is used to track and identify door mirrors and seats automatically and contactlessly via radio waves
This happens from the moment they are received to the time the complete vehicle comes off the assembly line
The project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) and the plan is to digitally connect up to 40 parts with the production system via RFID in the next few years
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
“New digital technologies such as RFID offer the major advantage of relieving our highly qualified production employees of routine tasks such as documenting work steps,” said Klein
Ludwigsfelde workers previoulsy had to manually and repeatedly scan barcodes on the mirrors and seats at various stations – in addition to their actual production job
The RFID system eliminates seven documentation-related work steps per vehicle for these two components alone while automatic checks assure workers they installed the right parts
Suppliers attach RFID tags to the components and benefit from them in their own logistics and production operations
Readers at key points of the logistics and production operations track the parts
RFID also allows dealer service employees to use information stored in databases to retrace which parts are installed
Ludwigsfelde plant already has extensive experience with RFID
20 automated guided vehicles (AGV) have been deployed in the assembly operations
controlled by being connected to the IT system and by RFID
Transponders in the floor of the factory buildings contain driving commands
Ten more AGVs will be used and additional routes will be developed with the start of production of the redesigned Sprinter
The second generation AGVs communicate with each other via Bluetooth to coordinate their actions autonomously
ensuring smooth traffic flow even when several AGVs cross paths
simultaneous coordination was only possible between a few vehicles
the first vehicles will be able to operate freely and flexibly in the buildings thanks to optical sensors but currently still follow predetermined paths
First generation AGVs are able to recognise obstacles such as forklifts or pedestrians via laser scanning and stop automatically
requiring a completely revised IT architecture
The central element is a data highway which all systems can access at the same time
the different IT platforms of the plants worldwide will be harmonised to ensure a global exchange can take place
The architecture makes it possible to quickly add new digital applications
This means that once the RFID pilot project is completed successfully
other plants will be able to use the finished software immediately
The new IT architecture will be introduced globally starting next year
100 technology and IT experts in Stuttgart and plants in Germany
Argentina and the US are working on 20 projects on intelligent production
The global teams cooperate closely in flat hierarchies across national and specialist unit boundaries
Engineering and IT are already part of the project teams at the start of the planning phases
The relevant experts also involve production employees early to ensure the practicality of projects from the start
Intelligent production is a component of employee qualification and the apprenticeship programme as well
“We are also opening up more and more to the outside world to be even closer to the heartbeat of new technologies,” said Klein
we are stepping up the cooperation with partners such as suppliers
We also want to provide school and university students more insights into our activities to get them interested early in the subject of production.”

Canadian delivery fleets will have a new electric option starting in the second half of the year
Mercedes-Benz Vans is launching an all-new electric Sprinter cargo van with a 400-kilometre range
The vehicle is a long-wheelbase (170 inches) cargo van with a high roof
It is equipped with the largest battery available
which has a usable capacity of 113 kilowatt hours
while the permissible gross vehicle weight is 4.25 tonnes
The eSprinter is capable of charging with both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC)
which converts the current in the vehicle when charging with alternating current has a maximum output of 9.6 kilowatts
The new eSprinter can be charged with up to 1154 kilowatts at fast-charging stations
Fast charging means charging from 10 to 80 percent of full capacity takes around 42 minutes for the 113 kWh battery
The all-new design of the van is based on modular architecture
includes all high-voltage components and can be combined with all vehicle variants
The module for the integrated high-voltage battery is located in the underbody to save space
which has a positive influence on handling and increases driving safety
The third pillar of the modular design is the rear module with the electrically driven rear axle
Following the principle of the common parts strategy
this is used in all variants of the all-new eSprinter
The compact and powerful electric motor is also integrated into the rear module
with additional plants coming online in Düsseldorf
and European-only production in Ludwigsfelde
Mercedes-Benz has invested around 350 million euros in the all-new eSprinter
Around 50 million euros will be invested in each of the three plants in Charleston
Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde to adapt production

strangled with a shoelace in such a way that her killer must have been looking her in the eyes while she went through her death throes
and her underwear had been pulled down in an apparent attempt to fake a sex crime
behaved strangely immediately after his wife's disappearance
which was the day before he found her body
when someone else might reasonably have assumed she had gone to visit a friend or take part in some other unplanned triviality
having already gone to the homes of several friends
Heinrich Scholl was a legend in the small east German town of Ludwigsfelde where he and his wife lived
He was the first mayor elected democratically after the Wall fell
the first democratically elected official in the town since World War II and was re-elected every time he ran
Ludwigsfelde was built by the Nazis but it was rebuilt by Heinrich Scholl
Through his mayoral tenure he was photographed at a stream of openings and events with notables like Prince Charles and German chancellor Gerhard Schroder
Ludwigsfelde was held up as a post-reunification East German success story
which came just before he stepped down as mayor
the building of Europe's biggest covered nudist spa
he was arrested for the murder of his wife
Anja Reich-Osang was editor of the weekend magazine at a major daily newspaper in Berlin
so she went to the town in search of the truth
she published a book called The Scholl Case
which spent 19 weeks on the German bestseller charts and which has just been translated and published here
or at least its remnants: two lives and one marriage
seemingly inexorable way in which that doom flowered
The book - written after Reich-Osang had sat throughout the trial
and many months more interviewing Heinrich Scholl
his wife's friends and anybody else she could find related to the case - is the story of a boy brought up in a loveless
who overcame that start to become something more than anyone ever expected
and then got into a relationship in which he became - maybe - something much
Reich-Osang says there were things about the trial that surprised her
She thought some of the police work was not good
that they didn't follow up some important leads and that the judge seemed to be convinced of Scholl's guilt before the trial was over
I thought actually they couldn't put him in jail," Reich-Osang says
"They couldn't say for sure that he was the murderer of his wife
My colleague from another big German paper
Heinrich Scholl's trial for murder occupies a single chapter of The Scholl Case
It's possible to read the book as the story of a marriage headed inexorably for disaster
There were witnesses who could place Heinrich and Brigitte Scholl together on the day she died
or who could at least place him in a compromising position
but their stories all fell apart under questioning: they couldn't be sure it was him they saw
There was nobody who could swear he was with them when his wife died
When two witnesses came forward to swear exactly that
Reich-Osang's opinion on the case has changed
there must be someone else and I think by now something from someone might have come up
I don't think you can keep a secret for such a long time ..
I guess time kind of convinced me it was him
I don't think he planned it as the judge believed
that he just couldn't keep it [together] any longer."
It is likely that Heinrich Scholl will spend the rest of his life in prison
His sole available appeal has already failed
"I write in the book that he was really really sick," Reich-Osang says
he was going from doctor to doctor and hospital to hospital and he couldn't do anything
Nobody could do anything about it and it's an illness that's caused by psychological problems
"This illness has vanished since his wife is dead
She is still puzzled by many details about the case
"He must have looked into her eyes for quite some time
five minutes I think it takes until you can strangle someone and that person dies
this is something I still don't understand
The dog didn't like him anyway and was barking at him
Is it realistic that the dog was just sitting there
This is something people who are experienced with dogs and came to court didn't know
"He also must have done everything really fast
This is something also nobody could explain
He must have had some dirt somewhere on his clothes and the man he met for lunch right after he must have killed her
There was nothing conspicuous about him'."
Heinrich and Brigitte had been good friends as teenagers but never more than that
Brigitte had become pregnant to another man and then separated from him
"We knew each other," Heinrich is quoted as saying in the book
She was controlling; he appeared comfortable being controlled
it could be seen as the build up to something terrible
but without the knowledge of how things ended
it could also be seen as a garden variety marriage of convenience
sadness and the sense that things could be worse
He started an affair with a woman he thought looked like Julia Roberts
she was 20 years younger and he said it was the first time in his life he had fallen in love
He had long suffered from stomach problems
He was diagnosed with a chronic inflammatory bowel disease
A professor prescribed therapy and a stay at a health resort
Scholl wrote down things that bothered him about his wife: "Nannies me
No love any more!" Some time after he returned
he was hospitalised with his intestinal problems and when she visited him
He began renting a flat in Berlin and spending his weekdays there
one of his former mistress and another of Julia Roberts
describes it thus: "The erotic passages read like assembly instructions for model planes or IKEA furniture."
He transferred 25,000 Euros to her family in Thailand
six months or so before his wife was murdered
Scholl lost the consultancy work that had been his main post-retirement source of income and he also lost his girlfriend - who had never much cared for him anyway
He moved out of his flat and back in with his wife
He wrote in his diary: "Reserves exhausted
I'm the only one who can do anything about it!"
Reich-Osang says of the time: "He didn't work any more
All of a sudden he had so much time in his life and he wasn't that recognised any more
Part of what makes the Scholl case so interesting is the ordinariness of the relationship at its centre
and believe therefore that a reasonably stable
man of nearly 70 murdered his wife of nearly 50 years
it may also make us rethink some assumptions about how life plays out
Reich-Osang says she was fascinated by Scholl's personality
and the fact he was a product of a particular time and set of circumstances common to Germans born in and around World War II
"The women were so strong: they had to be so strong during the war and after the war because the men were gone and they came back injured
He never wondered with his wife why she was so bossy with him
they never really argued in their marriage
I was really interested in that because this is a topic that has been coming up during the past few years - people from that generation
but to me that was important because you have this whole generation
You can watch those old couples in restaurants
They don't talk and they don't argue and they're still married
"That was one thing I was really fascinated by
the details of the murder that is its nominal centre are cloudy
but the picture of two people trapped in a relationship ready to explode couldn't be clearer
