Yet another high-stakes fixture took place today as Mainz hosted Eintracht Frankfurt in a hostile and atmospheric Mewa Arena
The onus was on Bo Henriksen's team to hunt victory as they hoped to keep touch with the European places
neither side managed to find a match-winning moment to claim maximum rewards
Eintracht Frankfurt roared out of the dressing rooms as Hugo Ekitiké raced into the penalty area and tested debutante Lasse Reiß with a low effort
The game was subsequently stopped for a handful of minutes as Dominick Kohr hobbled from the field in the 10th-minute with an ankle injury
Die Adler surged into a 1-0 lead as Rasmus Kristensen acted as the catalyst in the move
The Dane played a one-two with Ekitiké who unselfishly returned it back into his path
The marauding wing-back kept calm to slot the ball beyond Reiß with ice in his veins
Mainz improved as the half wore on as Robin Hanche-Olsen headed over the bar from an Amiri corner
Jae-Sung Lee caused the Frankfurt defence bother on a few occasions and the Korean actually had the ball in the net before half-time
A VAR review would cut short any celebrations with offside the verdict.
The second-half desperately required a spark and that spark arrived on 57 minutes as Mainz restored parity
Anthony Caci's long throw in fell to the back post where Kristensen attempted to clear until Jonathan Burkardt bundled the ball over Kevin Trapp's hesd
A 16th-goal of the campaign making him Die Nullfünfers' record top-scorer in a Bundesliga season
The hosts looked far likelier of the two teams to score a second in the following period of the game
An opportunity fell the way of Sano who blazed wide as Mainz put their visitors under relentless pressure
Dino Toppmöller cut a frustrated figure as his side started to come off second best
Frankfurt easily could have snatched victory late on as Stefan Bell coughed up possession to Ekitiké
The French marksman attempted to chip Reiß
Burkardt came close to netting a brace in injury time but the German sliced his half-volley left and wide as both teams had to make do with a point apiece.

Frankfurt are close to securing a spot in the Champions League after a 1-1 draw with MainzUlrik Pedersen/NurPhoto/Shutters / Shutterstock Editorial / ProfimediaFSV Mainz extended their unbeaten Bundesliga run at home to 11 games
coming from behind to draw 1-1 with rivals Eintracht Frankfurt
who consequently failed to guarantee themselves a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) this weekend
but did move four points clear of fourth-placed SC Freiburg. The visitors issued a statement of intent inside the opening minute courtesy of talisman Hugo Ekitiké
with his effort impressively saved by Lasse Rieß
the hosts suffered a significant blow as Dominik Kohr sustained a serious-looking injury to his left knee
Mainz then began to settle into the contest, until out of the blue, Rasmus Kristensen benefited from a fortunate ricochet that allowed him to find Ekitiké
who returned the pass for the Dane to finish past the onrushing Rieß
Match statsStatsperformThe hosts suffered more injury woe midway through the first period as Danny da Costa was withdrawn, with Silvan Widmer coming on to don the captain’s armband, before there was another brief pause due to paper balls being chucked at corner taker Nadiem Amiri by the Frankfurt fans
Mainz thought they had equalised in first-half stoppage time as Anthony Caci’s lovely pinpoint cross was headed home with aplomb by Lee Jae-sung – who had missed a presentable chance a couple of minutes earlier – only for the offside flag to be raised
Mainz refused to allow their heads to drop
and they came out after the break looking the more threatening of the two sides
Widmer’s throw-in was flicked on to the back post, where Kristensen, unaware of Jonathan Burkardt’s presence
booted the ball against him for it to agonisingly loop out of the reach of Kevin Trapp
Bo Henriksen’s men began to sense that a win was possible
although the threat of Ekitiké remained as the Frenchman miscued a lob on 69 minutes
it was Ekitiké again who could have netted the winner
only for his dink to just go wide of Rieß’s right-hand post
while Burkardt also had a late opportunity
After missing out on their first league double over Frankfurt in five years
Mainz are winless in seven Bundesliga games
but sit just two points adrift of the European places with just two games of the season left to play
while their opponents here need one more win this term to secure UCL football in 2025/26

As we go one step closer to the Meisterschale
here are the players who made it happen today
Bayern Munich faced Mainz 05 at home with all the hopes of bagging the Meisterschale Dahoam
the Bavarians have not won the Bundesliga yet
for Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 against FC Augsburg
history says that Bayern has rarely ever bagged the ‘Schale from a home game
One will simply have to wait until next week’s game against RB Leipzig
let’s discuss who deserves a shout-out from tonight’s game
The Mainz skipper leaves Munich with a heavy heart and several what-ifs
His close range miss from the first half was certainly forgettable
he bravely led the Mainz side in their pursuit for a European spot
I wish this award could be given to the entire defense but if only one had to be chosen
The Englishman was in the right place at the right time
both in his defensive pursuits and his offensive efforts
It was a fantastic game by the Englishman as he often helped get the ball back in the attack as well
His goal in the second half was otherworldly — a corner from Michael Olise which he then headed in to make it 3-0 was a work of art
A result of quick thinking and a well-aimed header indeed
yet again nominate Joshua Kimmich for Der Fußballgott
This means choosing between what is usually two mediocre performances and decide the less mediocre one gets an award
But the Meisterschale is not insignificant because only Bayern and Leverkusen are competing for it
have their falls from grace mid-season and yet rise to the occasion inevitably; and one makes it work
while the other misses the mark by a tiny margin
Kimmich performed pretty well in yet another outing as captain
He has not much to speak for his game — granted he did not make any significant strides in attack or defense but there were no errors in his game
He did what had to be done quietly and that matters
While Sané is a strong contender for Der Bomber
it was Michael Olise who made the most impact in the attack
Sane’s electrifying goal may have been the ignition
but Olise looked the most lethal and sharp
His goal at the 40th minute was reminiscent of the classical Arjen Robben left footed shot and a nice callback to good old days
The assist he provided to Dier’s goal via corner was fantastic as well
He continued to make several promising strides towards a goal but his indecisiveness left a lot to be desired
I am not saying this just to pick up controversy
Konrad Laimer may not have had the shiniest performance
He may not have bagged an assist or a goal
But who was out there making recovery runs
Who ensured the ball was progressed into attack as often as possible
Who had no trouble fighting for the ball back from the opposition
What goes without saying is that the Austrian does the job he was never even meant to do
Playing at right-back and playing this well is something very few do and of course
Laimer being the versatile Swiss Austrian knife he is
No day goes when I do not think about Thomas Müller
Congratulations on making your 500th appearance
He came onto the pitch and we scored our 3rd goal almost in seconds

As part of Eintracht Frankfurt's build up to their hotly-anticipated Sunday meeting with Mainz
head coach Dino Toppmöller graced the media in the mixed room
Mainz will play with a fair amount of anger in their stomachs
We're prepared for the tough tackling from the start
A lot will be about intensity and second balls
"Everyone who was there for the first leg will have remembered that it was an unnecessary defeat
That might be a bit of additional motivation for every player
without me having to mention it specifically
“We've been consistent in our performances throughout the season
There were always moments when the results weren't there
That's the key in the end,” Toppmöller said regarding the game
it was a mixed bag to report on from the Hessen club's point of view
Mario Götze may require an MRI scan next week to see if he can play again this season.
“Rasmus Kristensen was able to train normally throughout the week
participating in parts of training on Wednesday and then fully returning from Thursday
Mario Götze and Kauã Santos are still sidelined,” he added.

Prior to Sunday's crunch match with Eintracht Frankfurt in the race for European football
Mainz gaffer Bo Henriksen hosted the club's press conference in the mixed room
"We're excited to play a game like this – we're sold out
“The important thing for us is that we have a good feeling and not just think about the fact that we haven't won in six games
and the club every day – it's incredible,” Henriksen added
The Danish head coach went on to highlight two players who they hope will be fit in time
whilst praising club veteran Stefan Bell and their tricky opponents Frankfurt
"Moritz Jenz and Anthony Caci aren't yet sure if they'll be able to play
"Bello [Stefan Bell] is a club legend and very
but also an important character in the team and for us as a coaching staff
so it's important that we defend well against such a high-quality team,” he concluded
but the Bavarians' Bundesliga hopes received a major boost
A comfortable 4-0 win away at Heidenheim proved invaluable as Bayer Leverkusen could only manage a 1-1 draw away at FC St
That followed their draw with Union Berlin
meaning Xabi Alonso's side is starting to show some real cracks
Bayern's next opponent will pose a tougher test than Heidenheim
with sixth-placed Mainz travelling to the Allianz Arena on Saturday afternoon
They are still firmly in the fight for a Champions League spot and will not be looking to do Bayern any favors
𝑻𝑶𝑷 𝑶𝑭 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑻𝑨𝑩𝑳𝑬 🔝Here’s how things stand after MD30! 😮💨 pic.twitter.com/jmfmt0w25z
Let's have a look at the odds and prediction ahead of the game (Odds via Draftkings)
With the Champions League no longer a distraction and considering the dominant manner in which Bayern swept Heidenheim aside, it does feel as though Vincent Kompany's side is refusing to let this Bundesliga title slip out of their grasp
An eight-point lead at this stage is almost unassailable
but there is still no real room for complacency
although they have hit a rough patch of form at a really key time in the season
IMAGO / Sportfoto RudelTheir last Bundesliga win came six games ago and they still need to face Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen before the season is over
It could be that some of the belief has gone from Bo Henriksen's side
which would help Bayern towards an important victory
Given Bayern can actually win the Bundesliga with a win here and a loss for Leverkusen at home to Augsburg
there will be a huge amount of pressure on the Bavarians
but they should have enough to get the result they need against Mainz

Bayern Munich took another step towards the imminent Bundesliga title by recording a 3-0 win against Mainz 05 thanks to goals from Leroy Sané
Bayern were often making too many passes around the box that yielded promise but never became much
The ability to get the ball into dangerous positions and the inability to do anything of worth with it have been issues that have long plagued this team
but they seemed unusually apparent in the first half
It almost seemed like a game from Julian Nagelsmann’s season with Sadio Mané
where Bayern lacked a direct goalscorer and the team had to recalibrate its attacking options and mechanisms
Bayern lost out on plenty of potential scoring opportunities because of a lack of decision-making and effective penetration of the box in the first half
Joshua Kimmich often made side passes when there were better options
and that slowed down the play: an incessant problem in his game
but that didn’t yield anything of worth either
a larger issue was the success rate of Bayern’s forwards in 1v1s or simply even on the break
Multiple golden opportunities were missed throughout the game due to questionable decision-making
and it simply has to be better if any of the forwards plan on extending their contracts
had a deeply forgettable game after starting as an attacking midfielder
Bayern needs to be more clinical and direct in bigger games
Bayern played calmly and got the job done exactly as intended
The backline saw some interesting transitions throughout the game
but both fullbacks did exactly what was expected of them and helped advance the attack on both flanks
He was uncompromising defensively while also being all over the pitch
The Austrian advanced the ball extremely well
picking up two assists while overlapping wonderfully with Michael Olise
It was a team that played with great composure on the ball, and that is a very promising indicator of its mentality. Aleksandar Pavlović in particular did this well, transitioning into chance creation effortlessly while bossing the midfield. This is the sort of reaction and calm playstyle you expect after a tough loss in the Champions League
It shows that the team absolutely has what it takes to succeed in the long run
There have been a lot of murmurs around Jonas Urbig’s ability and whether he belongs at FC Bayern or not
Today’s game saw him follow up his first Bundesliga clean sheet for Bayern with his second
and proved unequivocally that he has what it takes
He made some fantastic saves while maintaining impeccable distribution and a commanding presence in goal
it raises questions about Manuel Neuer’s expensive extension and also makes fans wonder whether Urbig will get enough starting time next season
Bayern Munich’s reported extension of Leroy Sané comes as he records his personal best Bundesliga goal tally (10) in what has been a shaky season for the winger
The game effectively encapsulated his career at Bayern
showcasing his very best and his very worst
most notably the one that hit the post when it looked certain to be a goal
But that raises the question: is it the right choice to extend him
especially considering the inconsistency he has shown across his tenure here
Bayer Leverkusen’s win against Augsburg denied Bayern the privilege of their win over Mainz being title-clinching
but Bayern simply need to win one of their next three game to be crowned Rekordmeister again
Prep the Paulaner: Bayern are on the brink of reclaiming the Meisterschale
Strong course records were established at the Gutenberg Mainz Half Marathon
Debutant James Kipkurui was the surprise winner in 60:50
Fellow Kenyan Esther Chemtai took the women’s race in 68:52
These results confirmed the race’s position as the second fastest half marathon in Germany behind Berlin
when the lead group was on course for a sub-one-hour finish time
A group of six then reached the 10km point in 28:35
it was the 23-year-old debutant James Kipkurui
who broke away from the group before the 15km mark
improved the course record by eleven seconds to 60:50 and achieved the first result under 61:00 in Mainz
“This victory comes as a surprise to me
My next goal now is to improve my time to around 59 minutes,” said James Kipkurui
who comes from the wider Eldoret area (Eldama Ravine)
The 1992 Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion
moved up from third to second during the final two kms and crossed the line as runner-up with 61:22
missing his personal best by just five seconds
The course is really good and the atmosphere was fantastic,” said Samuel Fitwi
Kenya’s Joshua Kithuku was third with 61:24
three athletes reached the 10km mark in 32:36
Belgium’s Hanne Verbruggen helped form the lead trio while Domenika Mayer of Germany began to lose contact in this section of the race
the two Kenyans dropped Hanne Verbruggen as well
Esther Chemtai then moved ahead with two kilometres to go
she was almost a minute faster than the previous course record of 69:46
Behind the 31-year-old Rency Kogo took second with 69:04
and Hanne Verbruggen followed in third in 69:43
This was a big personal best for the Belgian
“It was only my second half marathon and my first time under 70 minutes
Now I would like to improve to around 67:00
but first I want to get faster in the half marathon,” said Esther Chemtai
who trains in the Ngong Hills near Nairobi
she was the bronze medallist at the World Junior Cross Country Championships
Fourth-placed Domenika Mayer was the fourth woman to clock a sub-70:00 time in Mainz on Sunday
the German ran her second fastest time ever and missed her PB by just ten seconds
I did not even expect to finish,” said Domenika Mayer

“We are excited to announce that, together with an experienced German investor specializing in digital and energy infrastructure, we have acquired a strategic site in Mainz to develop a sustainable, modular data center,” the company said on LinkedIn last week
DCP said the MNZ1 site comes with a 40MW grid connection and aims to launch services in 2028
Further details - including terms of the land sale or the investment partner - were not available

DCP describes itself as a data center-focused investment platform in the DACH region
providing development and investment services and acting as a minority joint venture and operating partner
The company says it has more than €660 million ($746.1m) in assets under management or development

Bayern Munich is
one win away from reclaiming the Bundesliga title after Bayer Leverkusen dropped points last weekend
If Leverkusen fail to win and Bayern win against Mainz
that should do the trick as it is the best-case scenario for the Bavarians
With rumors of player and coach departures in the summer
Bayern ought to capitalize on the uncertainty in Leverkusen
Hiroki Ito) are not around while Dayot Upamecano
who is in the process of doing light training
The team is not far from Bayern’s strongest team
as three points on Saturday makes it difficult for Leverkusen to cover ground

Mainz 05 vs
Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Crucial clash in battle for European qualification | OneFootballBulinews
Mainz 05Mainz’s European bid has lost considerable momentum in recent weeks
While they have experienced a dip in form, Mainz will still fancy their chances of taking something from Sunday’s contest
The hosts are looking to complete a Bundesliga double over Frankfurt after clinching a 3-1 victory in December’s reverse fixture
representing a third consecutive home league game without conceding
With a four point advantage over fifth spot, Dino Toppmöller's side know they can clinch a top-four finish with two games to spare if they take all three points from Sunday's fixture. However, that may be easier said than done, considering they have drawn each of their previous three away league games against Mainz
The visitors are unable to call upon the services of Kaua Santos and Mario Götze due to knee and thigh injuries respectively

German top marathon runners Samuel Fitwi and Domenika Mayer hope to break records at Sunday’s Gutenberg Half Marathon Mainz
They are not only targeting their personal bests but eyeing the course records as well
the two reigning national marathon champions will face strong rivals
There could be thrilling races at Germany’s upcoming half-marathon
The Gutenberg Mainz Half Marathon was restructured last year with a new organizing team in place
Mainly known as a marathon event before the classic distance was dropped and the focus is now very much on the half marathon
Organizers registered 8,500 half-marathon runners for Sunday’s race
“Focusing on the half marathon was the right decision
We think that it will be possible to have over 10,000 runners in the future
but we want to do it step by step,” said Race Director Jo Schindler
who also organizes the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon in October with his team
“The half marathon is an important event for the city of Mainz
The switch from the marathon to the half marathon cost me a couple of sleepless nights last year
but everything the organizer promised did materialize – we are really happy with the development of the race,” said Günter Beck
the Gutenberg Half Marathon Mainz established itself as the second-fastest German half-marathon race behind Berlin last year
“We are planning a 60:30 pace for the men
and the women will also be going for a course record,” said Philipp Kopp
Samuel Fitwi and Domenika Mayer showed fine form at the beginning of April with their victories at the German Marathon Championships in Hannover
My goal is to achieve a very good place and a personal best
I plan to go with the 60:30 pace,” said 29-year-old Samuel Ftwi
who finished an excellent fifth in the half marathon at last year’s European Championships in Rome
He also achieved his current best time of 61:17 in that race
Fitwi is the national record holder with 2:04:56
Samuel Fitwi’s strongest rival could be Joshua Kithuku
The 19-year-old Kenyan won a half marathon in Eldoret
last year in 60:37 – a very strong time in high altitude
If he is in top form he will surely challenge Samuel Fitwi
Two more Africans are on the start list with personal bests of sub 62:00: Ethiopia’s Hersuato Mamiyo and Calistus Kitoo of Kenya have run 61:07 and 61:39 respectively
her PB does not reflect her full potential over this distance
“I want to bring my half-marathon PB in line with my other personal records on Sunday,” said the 34-year-old
who has a 2:23:47 personal best in the marathon
“Having just got back into training well after the Hanover Marathon
I hope that the others will also want to run fast on Sunday and that we will form a strong group,” said Domenika Mayer
The number two on the start list is Belgium’s Hanne Verbruggen
She has a PB of 70:01 and was third in Mainz a year ago
the World Junior Cross Country Championships’ bronze medallist from 2010
a debutant could produce a surprise: Fellow-Kenyan Rency Kogo recently won the 10k race in Paderborn

The Guinean has been the club’s top scorer
while Mainz entered the match day in third place
so the Black and Yellows never seemed like the favorites
I don't want to dwell the heartbreaking final game of the 2022-23 season either
The main storyline of the day was Serhou Guirassy’s absence from Borussia Dortmund’s match with Mainz 05
it came as a pleasant surprise that Borussia Dortmund returned from international duty and defeated an opponent they’ve struggled against in recent years
Dortmund’s players began winning more of the one-on-one duals
and they broke the deadlock through a Maxi Beier goal
though Julian Brandt deserves credit for creating the opportunity
The second half saw a much more aggressive approach from Mainz
but it didn’t stop Maxi Beier from scoring a second goal
Paul Nebel did manage to pull one back for the visitors
Borussia Dortmund have claimed a vital three points in their uphill quest for Europe
Here are the player ratings from BVB’s 3-1 win:

Gregor Kobel (6/10) – Kobel made a pair of important saves
and didn’t receive credit for a double save on a play that was incorrectly deemed offside
VAR would have likely ruled in Mainz’s favor
Waldemar Anton (6/10) – Waldemar Anton made a few early mistakes and only won a quarter of his tackles
He made some risky plays into our own box but did dribble the ball progressively on more than one occasion
Anton’s performance was satisfactory but nothing more
Emre Can (7/10) – A couple of early mistakes could have been costly
but Emre Can maintained his composure throughout this match
ensuring the ball was cleared from Dortmund’s box as quickly as possible
His strong header also resulted in Dortmund’s second goal
Niko Schlotterbeck (9/10) – Niko Schlotterbeck was the complete player in this match
Not only was he the defensive stalwart we’ve come to know
he also stepped up to take corner kicks today
earning two assists from said corner kicks
This was impressive from the German International
Yan Couto (5/10) – Yan Couto struggled to get his footing in this match
He could be effective when he was able to get the ball off
but too frequently the Brazilian was beaten in one-on-one situations
and was eventually substituted when he seemed at risk of picking up a second yellow
Pascal Groß (6/10) – Niko Kovac’s 3-4-1-2 seemed to most negatively affect the defensive midfield
it could be argued that Groß’s below-average performance could have had to do with his participation in Germany’s squad last week
Salih Özcan (4/10) – Salih Özcan got his chance to start today in Marcel Sabitzer’s absence
and he sent more than a couple long-balls so far away from their intended target
Julian Ryerson (7/10) – The on-field change of position didn’t benefit Julian Ryerson much in this match either
as he wasn’t as impactful as he typically is
his winning of tackles and ground duals undoubtedly helped steer this match in Dortmund’s favor
Julian Brandt (7/10) – In spite of Julian Brandt’s poor season
Brandt’s cheeky link-up play seemed to work in the build-up of numerous attacks
and his pass created Dortmund’s first goal
It’s a step in the right direction for a player who has been under scrutiny
Maxi Beier (9/10) – In Maxi Beier’s breakout season with Hoffenheim last year
he was primarily used in a two-striker formation
The young German might not be a center forward
Now what if he and Guirassy were to try this out
Karim Adeyemi (8/10) Adeyemi was heavily involved in the attack through the entire match
Daniel Svensson (6/10) While it was great to see Svensson back
Jamie Gittens (N/A) – Süle looked incredibly shaky on the ball and mistake-prone
Niko Kovač (8/10) – This is a tough one to rate
but I think an ‘8’ is justified for two reasons
is that Kovac was always planning this match with Guirassy in mind
so the sudden switch to a 3-4-1-2 was seemingly improvisational
but the change in system brought out the best in both Julian Brandt and Maxi Beier
who were able to exploit the space in front of Mainz’s defense
Dortmund has been far too predictable this season
and this match was the opposite of predictable
This is Dortmund’s first win this year against a side ahead of them in the league table
Mainz had the momentum; Mainz was the in-form team
But Borussia Dortmund won and Niko Kovač deserves some credit

The first time The Athletic spoke to Bo Henriksen
it was late April 2024 and the Mainz team he had taken charge of two months earlier were staring relegation from Germany’s top flight in the face
he was full of radiant positivity and the kind of energy that can transform the day of anyone who steps into its bright beam
they are within touching distance of Champions League qualification and have the second-best defensive record in the Bundesliga
They are winless in three matches having lost away against Borussia Dortmund a week ago and drawn with visitors Holstein Kiel on Saturday
but with six games left they are still fourth
For a club with the 11th-highest wage spend in the 18-team league
left Swiss top-flight side FC Zurich in the February to become Mainz’s third coach of the campaign
The son of a sportswriter who was born and raised in Roskilde
Icelandic and English football (with Kidderminster Harriers and Bristol Rovers) — and a brief sojourn playing in the Maldives — before beginning his journey as a coach back in his home country
he had never managed outside Denmark (Bronshoj
it was to take up his first job in a major European league
The team he inherited had won one league game all season
were second bottom with 12 points from 21 games
and had been in the relegation zone for five months
fearful and waiting to be put out of their misery
“The problem with fear is that it limits your ability to perform,” he tells The Athletic
“The most important thing for me is to take that away from every player and from the team
Players understand that trust by feeling it and by me proving it to them.”
He had a chance to do that almost straight away
Xabi Alonso’s team were on their way to an unbeaten domestic season and the German double
but Mainz were level at 1-1 midway through the second half and deserving of what would have been a vital
Then goalkeeper Robin Zentner fumbled Robert Andrich’s long-shot into his own net
the kind of error that lives on YouTube forever
a 29-year-old who had been a Mainz player since childhood
“I said to him when he came into the dressing room
you made a mistake — that’s part of life and it’s OK
then we don’t have a chance of being successful
Next time you will be the hero’,” Henriksen recalls
Zentner has been in the form of his career
he came close to being called up to the German national team for the first time
Henriksen brought all of their vibrancy and life back and when
Jonathan Burkardt scored the third goal in a 3-1 away win against Wolfsburg
putting lingering fears of relegation to bed
many of the players ran straight to Henriksen on the sideline and jumped into his arms to celebrate
Ahead of that game at the Volkswagen Arena
when the stadium was still largely empty but the travelling fans were already in place
from where he whipped those Mainz supporters into a frenzy
but that is who he is — it’s just not all he is
Henriksen often sells himself short and allows the media to have fun with his demeanour on the touchline
described him as Mainz’s Trainer-Rumpelstilzchen
their Rumpelstiltskin coach from the Brothers Grimm fairytale
Such caricatures hardly seem to trouble him
he happily adds to them and is fond of spinning a yarn about how
he holds a record with his bank for the number of credit cards lost on a single account — 155
which may or may not be an exaggeration but which
is just another distraction from how good a coach he actually is
Henriksen is a student of the game; a sponge-like personality who has absorbed ideas throughout his career
from watching and admiring Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid
He has allowed his ideas about the game to evolve through all sorts of conversations with other coaches in between
In an interview with German football writer Christoph Biermann in July 2024
he recalled “writing long essays about defensive organisation and pressing structures” for his coaching qualifications
about reviving an underperforming team with intangibles
this one has demanded much more — positivity again
“We had some tactical ambitions in the summer,” Henriksen says
We wanted to be better at controlling games
We don’t want to just kick the ball as long and as high as possible
We wanted to find the half spaces and develop a game that allowed us to attack from those positions
But we also needed to get better without the ball
The way we pressured teams needed to get better
Making that more complicated were a trio of departures
midfielder Leandro Barreiro moved to Benfica and central defender Sepp van den Berg returned to Liverpool after his season on loan
Mainz won only two of their first nine Bundesliga games between August and November
“The problem at the beginning of the season was that the fear came back into the group again because we’d lost three of our most important players,” Henriksen says
“There was noise in the dressing room because
they all wanted to build on what they had done (last season)
Are the players we have brought good enough
the Japan international midfielder signed last summer) as good as Leo (Barreiro) in the middle of the pitch
A 3-1 home win against Dortmund on November 9 was the catalyst
including becoming the first team in the Bundesliga to beat Vincent Kompany’s Bayern
They went unbeaten in another six games (winning four) in February and March
a 22-year-old midfielder and academy graduate) has shown what a fantastic replacement he was
Signed from Kashima Antlers in Japan’s top-flight J1 League for a reported €2.5million (£2.1m; $2.7m)
he has been one of the most combative midfielders in the league and has started all 28 league games in his first season in Europe
He has run 314.5km (almost 200 miles) on the pitch during that time
and is one of four Mainz players in the top 30 for that metric
hard-working and defend with the kind of structure that makes them extremely difficult to play through
they remain dangerous on the break but not dependent upon transitions or counters
They have shown exactly the intricacy Henriksen was aiming for in pre-season
It was evident in the combination that created Lee Jae-sung’s second goal of the game in the 2-1 win against Bayern in December
and in Nelson Weiper’s goal in the 2-0 defeat of Stuttgart the following month
which was constructed with patience and vision by Nebel
Burkardt’s smart swivel and finish against Leipzig at the beginning of March was
as pretty a goal as any club scored that weekend
who sealed the 3-1 away win over Gladbach three weeks ago
curling home beautifully after a clever one-two on the edge of the box with Lee
but part of their story is best told through their individuals — and Amiri is quite a tale
having drifted to the margins of the Leverkusen squad
he made what many believed was a reckless move
Essentially: abandoning the title for what looked like a ticket to the second division
Amiri — by then 27 years old — was allowed to move clubs for just €1million
But he has been sensationally good for Mainz
he was called up to the Germany squad last month for the first time since 2020
When Julian Nagelsmann picked him and Burkardt to start against Italy at San Siro for the first leg of the Nations League quarter-final on March 20
it was the first time in Mainz’s history that two of their players had begun a game for the German national team
Amiri’s story gives Henriksen “goosebumps”
and I was just a part of that because I didn’t really do anything
because I could see it in his eyes when he got selected (by Germany)
because it was hard for him to make that turnaround
it was Amiri who was behind one of the season’s most affecting moments
even though it occurred behind closed doors
Mainz’s first-team players were being led through a video analysis session by Mikkel Jespersen
did you have something you wanted to say?”
before standing up and announcing to Henriksen — who was stood to the side of the room and had no idea what was going on — that he had been voted Danish coach of the year for the first time in his career
The way the other players reacted said everything about what’s happening at Mainz and what Henriksen has been able to create there
and the only reason I wanted to become a coach was that I wanted to show that it is actually possible to create success in an environment where there isn’t fear
where there isn’t a toxic sense of masculinity and where you don’t have to be the best and strongest all the time
people who have a smile on their face when they play football or do whatever they do in life — for them anything is possible.”

Discovery Analysis Demonstrates Transformative Sensitivity of 95% with Specificity of 98% for the Detection of Pancreatic Cancer in Blood Samples
Mainz Biomed Enters into Exclusive Licensing Agreement for the Portfolio of mRNA Biomarkers
with Continued Development of Machine Learning AI-Based Algorithm Based on Liquid Biosciences EMERGE Platform
(NASDAQ:MYNZ) (“Mainz Biomed” or the “Company”)
announced today it has entered into a License and Option Agreement (the “Agreement”) with Liquid Biosciences (“Liquid”) to access a portfolio of novel mRNA biomarkers for the non-invasive detection of pancreatic cancer with a blood test
plan to develop this blood-based test for potential future FDA applications
the Company has the rights to develop a test using Liquid’s biomarkers through an exclusive license with the unilateral option to acquire the exclusive global rights to the gene expression biomarkers which have demonstrated a high degree of effectiveness in detecting pancreatic cancer
The financial terms of the Agreement include both a license fee and a royalty on future revenues in the event of the exercise of the option
The discovery process included multiple independent pancreatic cancer study cohorts
Liquid used their proprietary EMERGE platform to identify a panel of clinically relevant mRNA biomarkers from a blood-based cohort of 285 subjects with 35 pancreatic cancer patients
Liquid further confirmed the biomarkers with two additional
confirming the strong clinical contribution of each biomarker shown in the initial discovery phase
the biomarkers coupled with the proprietary algorithm developed by Liquid
achieved overall sensitivity of 95% and a 98% specificity for the detection of pancreatic cancer
If the statistical results are replicable after the integration into a new product
it has the potential to ultimately position the Company’s test to be the most robust and accurate screening test for pancreatic cancer on the market
“Securing the exclusive rights to license this portfolio of novel biomarkers is a major milestone and extension of our previously announced PancAlert program
It provides us with an extraordinary opportunity in the early detection and diagnosis of one of the most challenging cancers to treat
We believe that this achievement marks a paradigm shift in how we can detect pancreatic cancer,” said Mainz Biomed’s CEO
The parties plan to jointly develop this pancreatic cancer screening test
which will include enhancement of commercial assays
and preparation for potential FDA application and approval

Bayern Munich moved one victory away from winning back the Bundesliga title as they beat Mainz at home.
Leroy Sane slotted into the bottom corner from close range to put Vincent Kompany's side in front.
Michael Olise jinked inside and fired a low finish past Robin Zenter in the Mainz goal as Bayern increased their lead before the break.
England international Eric Dier rounded off the victory in the closing stages, heading in Olise's corner.
Bayern would have won the league on Saturday if last season's champions Bayer Leverkusen had dropped points.
However, Xabi Alonso's side were 2-0 winners against Augsburg as the eight-point gap between the two sides remained intact.
Prior to Leverkusen's unexpected success last term, Bayern had won 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.
Mainz had a chance to reduce their deficit at Allianz Arena when Nadiem Amiri attempted to curl an effort into the top corner, but Jonas Urbig dived to his right to beat it away.
The victory margin could also have been greater. Bayern's Sane bent a strike wide of the far post before sending a delicate chip over the advancing Zentner and against the post, as the home side dominated.
Thomas Muller came on with six minutes remaining to make his 500th Bundesliga appearance, with the Bayern legend departing the club in the summer.
Regardless of Leverkusen's result next weekend, victory for Bayern away at RB Leipzig (Saturday, 14:30 BST) would seal their 33rd Bundesliga title.

Speaking in the mixed zone after Mainz played out a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, veteran centre-half Stefan Bell reflected on the game.
"It was a fast-paced, energetic game from start to finish. It was certainly enjoyable, especially for the spectators.
"The start was unfortunate with the injuries [to Kohr and da Costa] and the goal conceded. What was crucial was that we stabilized after the substitutions until half-time.
"Overall, it was intense, but always fair on the pitch. In the second half, the game went both ways, with chances for both teams.
“But we certainly had a lot of good moves against a team in third place,” Bell explained.
Jonathan Burkardt also shared his thoughts on his equalising goal but highlighted his disappointment at the result.
“I'm relieved to have scored again, but there's also a hint of disappointment, especially because I had the chance to score a second goal. I would have loved to have scored,” the striker added.

Leverkusen’s win means there won’t be any title celebrations today
Bayern winning against Leipzig next week means they win the league irrespective of Leverkusen’s result

♦️ ♦️So gehen wir ins Spiel gegen Mainz. #FCBM05 #packmas pic.twitter.com/aZQtGj0hkq
The winner of the coveted Meisterschale could be decided as early as today
All Bayern Munich needs to do is to beat Mainz and hope that Bayer Leverkusen doesn’t win against Augsburg
If the Rekordmeister wins and Die Werkself draws
that puts them at 75 and 65 points respectively
With three games remaining and a maximum of nine points from those three games
the 10-point gap between the two teams is enough to give Bayern the Bundesliga
the Bavarians can theoretically lose their last three games (knocks on wood) and Leverkusen wins their last three games and Bayern would still win the league by one point (75 to 74)
it is imperative that the team gets three points
Bayern is top of the league with 72 points (22-6-2) while Mainz is sixth with 47 points (16-8-9)
Leverkusen is in second place with 64 points (18-10-2) while Augsburg is 10th place with 43 points (11-10-9)
