Thanks to all who voted. This week, we turned to rural districts for our nominees, two high school seniors. Keep reading to find out who won and how you can participate in our weekly statewide Student of the Week contest. While both our nominees took over a thousand votes each, Jakob Malchow of Pulaski High School was the clear winner with 65% of the vote. Pulaski High School English teacher Kacie Langlitz nominated Malchow, saying he has "excelled in many facets" of his high school career. In particular, he shows interest and leadership in mechanical skills, according to Langlitz. He logged extra time with a multimeter — a device that can measure several properties of an electrical current — even after getting certified to use one. He has also helped put on the school's SkillsUSA Car Show. "All in all, Jakob is a rock star of a student and club member," Langlitz said. High school students are nominated for Student of the Week by principals, teachers, youth organizations and others who work with teens. Voting is open each week from 5 a.m. Monday until noon Thursday with polls at jsonline.com, postcrescent.com and greenbaypressgazette.com. Pam Malchow of Rush City passed away on Saturday 1951 to Lawrence and Grace (Jordahl) Falk at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Hennepin County when Pam was in the sixth grade the family moved from Richfield to Colombia Heights. During her school years she enjoyed both band and choir. She and Lou (Louis) met in school but didn’t start dating until after high school After graduation Pam worked with her dad’s sister Mary at Northrup King. It was Mary that set Pam and Lou up for a date they moved to Shorewood Park in Rush City not far from Pam’s Malchow grandparents She was commuting from Rush City to work at Grayco and later at GAF Roofing for some ten years. She was employed with Provide Care when Lou passed away.  Family was always important as were many family vacations one of the more memorable trips was to California and Las Vegas where we met good friends Phil and Rosemary and their kids Opening fishing with her sisters and brothers-in-law was a family tradition. One year she caught a 15-pound Muskie in the channel of Shorewood Park. As a family we fished on Rush Lake she always let us play in the minnow buckets-chasing the minnows around to keep us busy we think we were there for the extra limit.  she moved from her Shorewood home to a townhouse in Rush City She enjoyed many years as a member of the Woman’s Club and loved getting together with the ladies of Shorewood. She loved going thrifting and watching Viking games with her good friend Connie. Pam liked to make floral arrangements and decorated the house with flowers. She enjoyed music and always talked about the Smokey Robinson concert she attended at the Casino Pam was a very enthusiastic person and took pride in everyone’s accomplishments She was always there to lend a helping hand.  Both she and her brother had a wonderful sense of humor and truly enjoyed each other’s company and summers were spent at the Rush City pool with Krista and Jessie. She was extremely proud of Colton working at the fire department In recent years the two great grandchildren were the twinkle in her eye.  Pam is survived by her sons Nick Malchow (Lisa Morris) of Rush City Nate (Sarah) Malchow of North Branch; grandchildren Colton Malchow Jessica (Jason) Otterholt; great-grandchildren Jed Malchow Louis Otterholt; siblings Debbie Killian of Blaine Tim (Jodi) Falk of Cannon Falls; many other relatives and friends She was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Grace Falk; husband Louis Malchow A gathering for family and friends will be held from 4-7 PM; Friday (12/15) at the Rush City This is an entirely different potential shockwave for Notre Dame football Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Chad Bowden, earlier this month named as FootballScoop's Player Personnel Director of the Year as voted by his peers has emerged as the top target in USC's ongoing search for its general manager Several sources told FootballScoop on Friday that USC has offered the job to Bowden who was Marcus Freeman's first hire at Notre Dame when Freeman first came to South Bend in January 2021 as Brian Kelly's defensive coordinator multiple sources shared that USC had targeted Bowden with a multiyear deal worth approximately $1 million annually Bowden has been making between $275,000-300,000 since he rebuffed Michigan's offer a year ago and was elevated into the assistant athletics director Sources on the West Coast told FootballScoop that Lincoln Riley had become very personally involved in seeking to hire Bowden away the rival Fighting Irish to help the Trojans rebound following a disappointing close to their 2023 season and a lackluster 2024 campaign Bowden helped assemble a Notre Dame roster that played for the College Football Playoff Championship Monday night against Ohio State But Bowden had assembled the majority of that roster with an NIL budget that per multiple sources with direct knowledge ranged between $7-8 million -- less than half that of Ohio State's outlay for its title-producing team Bowden keyed Notre Dame's 2024 additions of quarterback Riley Leonard from Duke Kris Mitchell from FIU and RJ Oben from Duke He also helped the team retain key talent that included stalwart defensive tackles Howard Cross and Rylie Mills as well as All-America safety Xavier Watts after the 2023 season The news comes as the general manager position in college football continues to see exponential growth -- in both salary and importance within the sport's landscape received a multi-year deal worth on average at least $850,000 and is expected to again see a salary increase Texas general manager Brandon Harris recently received a new deal that potentially climbed towards $750,000 pending bonuses.  is expected to receive a new deal in the coming weeks as he's spurred the Ducks' ability under Dan Lanning to assemble an elite roster that made Oregon the No 1 seed in this year's first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff.  Update>  It appears the deal is now in place Do you remember ‘Cinema Paradiso’ – the movie about Toto an aging movie operator in the local cinema of a small Sicilian village It is a deeply emotional story about how their friendship develops as Alfredo teaches Toto the secrets of traditional filmmaking and how to operate a projector with reels But the movie is also a story of an industry transformation and the boundless potential of lifelong learning The development in the film industry has been nothing less than mind-blowing we've transitioned from analog films and manual projectors to digital formats be entirely generated by AI and played on your mobile devices in high resolution while you are working out on your home trainer This rapid and dramatic shift underscores the need for lifelong learning to keep pace with technological advancements This is just one example of an industry undergoing massive changes due to recent technological and societal developments Many other industries are experiencing similar changes The result is a pivotal shift in the need for lifelong learning within companies and organizations While Alfredo could run Cinema Paradiso most of his life with the skills he acquired as a young movie operator Toto had to leave Sicily to pursue his dreams as a filmmaker And today’s young generations will have to learn and adapt at a speed and in ways that Alfredo couldn’t possibly have imagined almost all public funds for education are spent on young people under 35 years of age When it comes to investments in adult and continuing education Scott argue that advances in technology and longevity have yet to be matched by supporting innovations to our social structures and retirement is no longer suitable for the modern world We need a multistage life with more transitions They must play a crucial role in promoting and facilitating lifelong learning The benefits of such investments are potentially enormous It is thus about time that CEOs rethink their approach to lifelong learning In taking a more thorough look at their approach to lifelong learning begin by asking themselves the following four questions: Or as Alfredo would have put it: “Life He may not have the name recognition the other hires hold but his ability to change and define the Ducks program is more massive than you can imagine up-and-coming figure the Ducks have had an eye on He was named to the 247Sports 30-Under-30 list in 2019 and was hired as the associate athletic director at Texas A&M in 2021 He is considered among the most influential members of the recruiting game in the nation RelatedOregon's recent coaching hires show huge gamble for the Ducks, with big upsides The list of names he has worked under is pretty astonishing: Nick Saban Malchow has been a part of all of their recruiting teams essentially making himself the right-hand man to each one of those coaches Georgia signed five consecutive top-five recruiting classes This past year when he was leading the charge at A&M Malchow started as many front-office workers or coaches do as a grad assistant working his way up the chain He made his value known by parsing endless tape and figuring out the best way to single out the top recruits He helped Saban streamline his recruiting process and ultimately build a dominant dynasty in college football That's not to say he is the reason for Alabama's success over the years but he was certainly along for the ride in the early years Malchow was praised for his part in helping put the Bulldogs on the map when it came to recruiting giving UGA a chance to compete with Alabama on the field RelatedFormer Ducks WR Mycah Pittman explains why he decided to transfer from Oregon "It was also a major coup for the 29-year-old Malchow, who was honored as FootballScoop’s Player Personnel Director of the Year before being named to 247Sports’ 30-under-30 list," wrote AL.com's Rainer Sabin, speaking of Malchow's ascension at Georgia Malchow’s profile as backroom staffer was raised and pushed to the fore which proved uncomfortable for someone who has spent his professional life operating behind the scenes in relative anonymity." “He’s a top evaluator and leader in his role," one recruiting coordinator said "He has done it at the highest level at multiple places they’ve been able to become a national power in recruiting," another wrote "The 2021 class they signed and 2022 class they are signing are special.” working alongside Dan Lanning and Don Johnson buoyed by the resources given by Uncle Phil Knight Not like he didn't have the abilities to reach far and wide across the nation with the athletic departments in Georgia but with the shield of Nike University now around him it's almost intoxicating to think what he might achieve there was a deep-seated worry the Ducks might slip in the recruiting game and fall back to the levels of talent that we've seen over the past decade Oregon athletic director Dan Mullens went out and hired a head coach who is one of the best recruiters in the nation and he very easily could be the man to deliver the level of talent to Oregon that will ultimately bring a championship trophy back to Eugene Although Malchow’s exact splits are not available the newspaper Charlotte Observer reported at the time that he took it out in a 55.53 split for the first 100 meters it appeared to be a race between Malchow and the world record line “the noise coming from the stands sent an electric jolt through the building working its way to a deafening climax when Malchow finished All eyes except Malchow’s looked for the time and I could hear the crowd pushing me during the race A few months after breaking the world record Malchow would go on to win the Olympic title over Pankratov winning in a new Olympic Record time of 1:55.35 Ironically, in that Olympic race, a 15 year-old Michael Phelps finished back in 5th place just missing the podium by a few tenths of a second Phelps would begin his tear on the record board by breaking Malchow’s 200 fly record with a time of 1:54.92 He cemented this with another world record at the World Championships later that year before going on to break it another 6 times At both those World Championships and 2002 Pan Pacs Phelps and Malchow proved to be fierce competitors Although Phelps broke the world record at worlds Malchow beat him out for the looked painful and counter-intuitive How about Phelps’ breaking protocol to walk over and wish Tom luck as they were doing intro’s Looking at that world record progression —- has any swimmer other than Phelps lowered a WR in an event for 8 consecutive years Thinking…off the top of my head…I cannot think of anyone Ledecky would need to break either the 1500 or 800 wr for it to happen again Salnikov broke the 800 free wr 4 times over a 7 year period But she hasn’t done it in consecutive years The amazing thing is he did it in consecutive years It’s almost like he had a performance bonus for a WR and he just took Speedo to the cleaners chipping away at his eventual best time I remember watching him swim and competing against him in high school (we were in the same conference) He then trained at Hamline University where I used to train for diving He would be the only swimmer in the lanes under the board we were diving on We were all mortified that we would hit him and ruin his career This reminds me how the Charlotte ultraswim was a really fun meet to watch back in the day I feel like that and the Santa Clara Meet were always fun previews of the biggest meets of the summer up until a few years ago Those were the first “big meets” I swam in high school before their Prestige kinda took a hit With the pro swim series changes it’s kinda changed Tom Malchow was my swimming idol growing up Cursed with the ability to swim the 200 fly much better than any other event I appreciated how he leaned into it and became the best 200 flier in the world I might have kept trying to work on “easier” events at which I would only ever be average much love to you and your family….you are a gentleman and scholar….however I am still bitter that you beat me at ’96 OTs This is the best comment I’ve read on here …should’ve added… “Tom come on the SwimSwam Podcast and help me work through my 24-years of unprocessed trauma from your crushing defeat of my ego… It’s the least you could do after kicking my butt.” (Side note true story…I called Malchow after Kristof’s 1:50 200m fly to tell Malchow he is apparently really your screen name should be “Malchow A’Flyin’ More from Nicole the agencies involved will have a meeting at 8 a.m Tom Malchow said Saturday that he had not heard how the fire started He said he drove to the store after he fielded the call about the fire and could see the flames when he got to the top of the Second Street overpass He said he had just gotten home from pheasant hunting when he heard about the fire “You can always rebuild,” Tom Malchow said “I just pray that everybody’s out,” Mark Malchow said He said that 14 or 15 of the 17 apartments were rented It was only as friends and patrons arrived at The Brass Kettle Saturday that Emily Meier and Corey Barbato found out that the building their apartment was in was on fire The two were working at the restaurant just two streets north from where the fire was ramping up its destruction Barbato’s dog was still in their apartment so he left work hoping to get her He approached an officer who wasn’t readily willing to let him enter but then a firefighter allowed Barbato to get the German of the Malchow’s building Elise Campbell and her son Joseph Barbosa were on their way out of their new apartment — they had lived above the furniture store for about two and a half months — Saturday evening when they smelled burned plastic and heard a smoke detector assuming a neighbor had left a plastic container on the stove just thinking it shouldn’t be bad,” Campbell said but something didn’t feel right about the smell in the hallway “I stayed home and then a couple minutes later I went out in the hallway and saw there was a bunch of smoke so I called the fire department and then I went and knocked on their door where the smoke was coming from,” Walker said When no one answered he kicked in the door he called 911 and started knocking on doors He ended up leaving his phone in the apartment but everything we own is up there,” Campbell said Tom Malchow said the family also owns a third building to the south of the other two That is where Anchors of Faith Christian bookstore is She decided she wanted to pick up some paperwork so she swung by around 5:45 p.m An hour later a friend called to say Malchow’s was on fire went to the building and were able to access their back door The fire was still at the north end of the three buildings The Stengels grabbed records and a computer just before the fire department used force to enter the front door of the bookstore The Stengels assured firefighters there was no one else in their building “The firemen made sure we were all out,” said Stengel “We watched from the parking lot behind our building until about midnight and we prayed.” When the couple left the store Saturday before the fire When they returned late Sunday morning fire crews let them in The smell eventually started to burn Deb Stengel’s eyes She said her clothes smelled after being in the building for only 30 minutes Though the flames never made it to the Anchors of Faith building the books and other merchandise were permeated with smoke a foot and a half of water was continuing to settle It seeped further to Don’s Builders Hardware to the south But her emotions weren’t spurred by her loss Her concern was with the Malchow family and other downtown business owners She also thought about her customers’ needs because the store will be closed for the time being “I feel bad for not being able to support them,” Stengel said Barry Jaked is the technical director at the Capitol Theatre just north of the Malchow’s building The theater was offering weekend performances of “Bridge to Terabithia.” “You could see the smoke during the second act When everything is dark and that column of light hits,” Jaked said describing the whiffs of smoke that made their way into theater Saturday night the doors to the theater were propped wide open with a few high-powered fans airing out the smell The community rallied around firefighters and other first responders during the fire Everybody has stepped up from pizza places Downtown Aberdeen is usually hopping the night of the nonresident pheasant hunting season opener but Saturday hundreds of people surrounded the perimeter set up around the Malchow’s building and the numerous hydrants and hoses used by firefighters to combat the blaze Meints said there weren’t really any hindrances to first responders fulfilling their duties The Red Cross met with a number of the residents from the apartments Sunday the Red Cross had provided assistance to 17 people,” said Gretchen Hjelmstad spokeswoman for the Eastern South Dakota division of the Red Cross are accepting monetary donations to help residents A prayer service for those displaced and affected by the fire was held Sunday evening at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church The church will also be accepting donations all week from 9 a.m Bud Malchow opened Malchow’s store in 1945 He was manager of a Gambles store in Aberdeen in the 1930s and was eventually relocated to Minneapolis according to an American News story published in November 2016 about the 70th anniversary of Malchow’s — he wanted to run his own business and he wanted that business to be on Aberdeen’s Main Street Malchow’s has been a fixture on South Main for all those decades Tom Malchow began assisting with the operation of the company in 1969 The phone call arrived on the morning of Aug It’s an annual orientation that brings nearly 2,000 students into the hallways at Washington High School buoyed by the nervous buzz of a new school year the school’s activities director and former girls basketball coach helped with preparations before retreating to his office for a phone conversation with his doctor who calmly informed him that he had cancer “I won’t forget that day,” says Malchow a 41-year-old Aberdeen native who started in the Sioux Falls School District in 2001 and how you’re going to break it to them You think of your job and the people that count on you.” How could this happen to someone who was never sick and had lost 20 pounds over the summer through exercise and eating right Since leaving coaching in 2014 to become an administrator he had more time to spend with his wife and four children – ages 6 through 12 – enjoying their activities instead of running to his own But after months of feeling an itching sensation throughout his body that couldn't be traced to allergies Malchow discovered a lump on his neck in early August who ordered a CT scan of his neck and upper chest The phone call on Warrior Day was to tell Malchow that he had tested positive for lymphoma a diagnosis that later evolved into Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma a rare form of cancer that attacks white blood cells and can affect the immune system It’s the same disease that killed Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders Malchow was given a five-year survival rate of 85 percent with aggressive treatment consisting of 12 rounds of chemotherapy For a popular former player and coach known widely as “Chow,” the natural reaction was a mixture of fear and disbelief Whitney: Kristi Noem makes history, but song remains the same “There were a lot of tears shed because you’re worried or scared and then you’re just angry,” says Malchow Once he met with doctors and developed a course of treatment Inspired by messages of support from former players teammates and coaches throughout South Dakota he relied on lessons gleaned from a lifetime in athletics “Nate has a very competitive spirit,” says Washington High principal Dan Conrad “There’s a moment where you’re stunned when you hear (the diagnosis) I’m going to attack this thing.’” who coached with Malchow at Roosevelt and Washington and remains a close friend “This is just another big game for Chow,” he says “And he’s not used to losing.” Malchow didn’t have to look far to find his competitive grit was a high school basketball standout who led Aberdeen Central to a state title as a senior in 1961 while averaging more than 20 points a game He was later inducted into the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame Nate was the youngest of four brothers by a wide margin which meant rude awakenings when he tried to keep pace with the older boys' sporting endeavors “They pushed him a bit,” says Tom The brothers all worked at the family furniture store which still exists on Aberdeen’s Main Street They were instructed to keep their hands on the outside of the furniture while loading because “you can grow back skin More: Brandon Valley unseats Washington from atop 11AAA encouraged activities but made only two demands: The boys would go out for track and they would learn to play piano Piano taught them discipline and commitment while track motivated them to reach personal milestones rather than relying on others playing for Aberdeen Central in the 1988 state tournament at the Sioux Falls Arena where the Golden Eagles defeated Mitchell to claim the Class AA title nearly three decades after Tom’s team triumphed “My idols growing up were not NBA players,” says Nate “They were the guys playing for Aberdeen.” Love of the gameMalchow’s football career ended abruptly as a ninth-grader when he tore his ACL which meant 10 months of rehab following reconstructive surgery the youngest son drew inspiration from his father who had torn his Achilles tendon as a high schooler before coming back strong “Nate knew he still wanted to play (basketball) “The mindset is that you’re not afraid to take on the challenge.” Malchow wore a knee brace for a few years while growing to 6-foot-8 and expanding his game He was a sophomore when Aberdeen reached the 1994 state finals with a lineup that included classmate Josh Heupel who later starred at quarterback for Oklahoma and currently serves as head football coach at Central Florida Malchow played with Roosevelt’s Nate Tibbetts Nate White and John Sivesind and Mobridge’s Todd Schlekeway on a team called the South Dakota Stars who shook up the AAU circuit by finishing sixth at a national tournament in North Carolina in 1994 That was Malchow’s first brush with Fred Tibbetts who helped coach the Stars and was preparing for a remarkable run as architect of the girls basketball dynasty at Roosevelt “Fred became a mentor to him,” says Tom Malchow of Tibbetts “And we’ll never forget those times in North Carolina We had to delay our flights back home.” his father’s alma mater in Northfield It was there that he set his sights on teaching and coaching knowing he wanted to be as close to the game as possible It was also there that he met Sarah Tulibaski a fellow Concordia student-athlete from Minnesota who would become his wife in 2003 “She was helping to run intramurals,” recalls Nate “I met her while I was watching some of my buddies play basketball and we struck up a conversation Sarah worked for Wells Fargo in Sioux Falls following graduation while Nate pursued his master’s degree at South Dakota State and served as a student assistant on Scott Nagy’s coaching staff When he looked at joining Sarah in Sioux Falls There was an opening for a freshman girls basketball coach at Roosevelt where Tibbetts was building a program that would reel off six Class AA titles and a state-record 111-game win streak I never would have thought I’d be coaching girls basketball,” said Malchow who took a job teaching PE at the school in 2001 “But once I got there and started working with Fred and the staff There was just a general buzz and excitement around the program that was amazing.” the Roosevelt sophomore coach who later joined Malchow at Washington was impressed by the lanky young coach who became a frequent presence in the Rough Rider gym “You could tell Chow was head coaching material right off the beat,” says Toft “I had been working with the (forwards and centers) and he knew a lot more about that than I did Soon after Malchow took his next step as head girls coach at Washington in 2005 it was announced that Tibbetts was abruptly stepping down at Roosevelt When some suggested that Malchow should turn around and take over the Riders He had made a commitment to Washington and would stick with it That meant rebuilding a program that was hurting for talent and hadn’t captured a state title in 24 years Malchow did it by crafting his own version of Tibbetts’ model stressing competitive open gyms and empowering older players to challenge new arrivals In their first two seasons under Malchow they were storming to a 22-3 record and the school’s first state championship since 1981 “One thing I told the committee when they hired me was that we were going to have a program that they could be proud of and that we were going win,” says Malchow who produced NCAA-level players such as Ashley Eide The Warriors reached the state championship game four out of seven years starting in 2008 By the time Washington outlasted a Macy Miller-led Mitchell squad in the 2014 finals at Frost Arena it was a poorly kept secret that Malchow was stepping down to replace the retiring Kevin Kennedy as athletic director The coaching grind was not conducive to a family life that includes daughters Macy (12) and Katie (6) and twin sons Cole and Jake (7) Malchow was ready to take the next step at a school where he had developed close relationships and saw plenty of success on the horizon The competitive spirit that guided his playing and coaching career cast fresh light on his administrative role and bode well for the future recalls Malchow telling him about his doctor’s appointment in August and concerns about the possible diagnosis but there’s a chance I won’t be,’” recalls Stadem “Later when he brought the whole staff in to tell us (about the lymphoma) The American Cancer Society estimates that 8,500 new cases of Hodgkin’s disease appear nationally each year But intravenous chemotherapy has helped raise survival rates considerably which is all Malchow and his colleagues needed to know “I told Chow that when he decided to work out and get in shape over the summer that was God doing that,” recalls Stadem ‘God got you ready for a fight.’” Part of the battle was finding a sense of normalcy Malchow was determined to keep that routine though Conrad convinced him to only work days and limit time in bustling school hallways to reduce risk of infection After years of Malchow deflecting praise to shine a light on others Kennedy came out of retirement to help supervise evening activities neighbors brought meals to the house and friends and family sat with Nate during chemo sessions who has spoken regularly with former teammates such as Josh Heupel and Nate Tibbetts Focus on futureWith chemo treatments every other Friday there are times when Conrad takes one look at Malchow and tells him to go home for a nap like when Aberdeen held a “Black Out Cancer Night” to raise awareness at the football game between Washington and the Golden Eagles in early October Malchow's parents were on hand to see their son and soak up the moment Stadem's team ran the “Philly Special” trick play renaming it “Chow” in a game against Lincoln at Howard Wood Field Tyus Hanson rolled right and fired into the end zone to quarterback Jayden Johannsen who raised the ball in tribute after the score Chow!’ when he calls the play,” says Stadem “We were waiting for the right opportunity and the sky was like a beautiful orange that night The common denominator of these actions is that they provide as much comfort to those reaching out as they do to Malchow when he always gave credit to his players and coaches he’s deflecting a lot of that attention,” says Conrad “Now that he's competing against cancer he's still giving credit to others and looking around to say Among the things he's thankful for are reachable goals That used to be because of the state tournament but now it signifies the time when his treatments will end and he can seize upon signs of progress You can bet he'll be watching basketball amid March Madness cheering on the Warriors and greeting old friends The true nature of competitive spirit isn’t winning or losing It’s figuring out what matters along the way Argus Leader Media columnist Stu Whitney can be So he has experience on the cutting edge and a track record that suggests he's worth listening to This interview has been edited for clarity and length you wrote about two developments you said "represent the most unnoticed earthquake in the history of American campaigns." What are those two developments and every two years they poll the percentage of the electorate that actually casts ballots for candidates the percentage of ticket-splitters was 36% of the electorate nine out of 10 voters are choosing parties and not candidates because the entire campaign structure is built around influencing the choice of candidates So the lessons you drew from those developments had to do with campaign focus and timing I'd like to ask about focus first: your suggestion to shift from candidate-focused to party-focused advertising It has never been tested." But you go on to make two further points that the benefits of doing that could be huge If 90% of the voters are voting straight party tickets and you convert someone from being an independent to being a Democrat is that this new Democrat is going to vote straight tickets So in converting someone from an independent to a Democrat you affect not just one race that you were previously spending all your advertising dollars on you are getting votes up and down the ticket The data on party registration in states where you register by party indicates that the length of a decision about party registration lasts in excess of 30 years plus you get some portion of the next 30 years compared to spending your money on one candidate You write that "it is not correct to ask whether advertising can move party affiliation The more appropriate question is can highly targeted advertising accelerate the movement that is already taking place."   Gallup does the most regular party affiliation polls Their fourth-quarter poll for 2020 had the Democrats and Republicans after Republicans spreading the Big Lie and voting to overturn the election which sent $1,400 checks to 85% of our households Their misconduct fueled a fairly major movement in party affiliation without any advertising or any reinforcement of their sins I think one of the things you have to think about is: What is the information voters are getting What we need to use our advertising for is not to try to make a particular candidate into Satan and describe all their bad deeds What we need to do is enter into the news cycle and enhance or amplify news that is good for us with key information that is often left out on television news key information on the certification of the election was that 80% of Republicans in the House voted to overturn the election when 70% of Americans believed the election was fairly decided If we're in the news cycle and we're amplifying or enhancing news that is taking place — if CNN or NBC or any of the major news outlets are talking about something then you insert yourself into the conversation That's a much more believable delivery of information because it's validated by what the mainstream news outlets are saying We should take the messages that are out there amplify them and enhance them with the information that is particularly favorable to us You also note that there are examples of such shifts going on long-term and one of those you look at is about younger voters there's a couple of things to keep in mind They tend to be more independent than other age groups it's fair to say younger people have less information about politics than older people do And this shows up in the study the Democracy Fund did About 30% of the younger voters changed their party affiliation in states where you register by party and most of the movement was from Republican to independent I think we have excellent messages for younger people has not done student loan forgiveness but has come out for it and Democrats have been talking about reducing the cost of college which is something you don't hear from Republicans and of course generally young people are a more liberal audience Young voters weren't the group that moved most The group that moved most into the Democratic column in the 2017 study was Asian-Americans I don't doubt that they're feeling more afraid of Republicans now than they were in 2017 with all the violence that has taken place but now they've gotten a lot of attention in threatening ways In targeting the people that you want to move you have all the data you need to do a great model All you have to do is look at the voter lists look at the people who move toward the Democrats all sorts of things that may be predictive of someone moving So the second big lesson had to do with timing with what's wrong with the current timing of campaign spending and what might work better but when Rick Perry was running for governor of Texas he brought Don Green from Yale down — the shocking scandal in all of this is that the measurement of political tactics started the academic community and they discovered that TV could move votes but they also showed that the effect tended to diminish everyone has kind of packed the advertising into September and October of the election year they might back it up into June or whatever But here's the thing: There has to be a balance So if I sent a mailing in September of 2022 and say The Republicans all voted against your stimulus check If we run it at the time when they're actually receiving the check the initial impact is going to be much greater even if there's some diminishment you'll end up with more All the advertising has gotten so difficult and the best way to move them is when they are being personally affected by an issue when the issue is current and in front of them Not many voters probably know that 80% of the Republicans in the House voted to overturn the election If we had put that out and it was widely known maybe it wouldn't have been a nine-point shift maybe it would have been an 11-point shift I believe in being opportunistic and talking to voters and delivering messages at the point in time when they are feeling the issues most strongly where reasoning and advanced thinking takes place It went to the most primitive part of the brain and if you can hit the voter at the time that the voter is emotional You just gave some examples of things earlier this year that Democrats could have messaged about right now the Republicans just voted to shut down the government and default on the American debt And I think the only reason they did that was because they knew the Democrats would have the votes to raise the debt ceiling But you could quote the Wall Street Journal — a big Republican paper — and they would say it is catastrophic You just put a list out there of all the things that would happen if the Republican vote prevailed They're spectators in a world of rich opportunity Now that world of rich opportunity may be passing because the Democrats can't get their stuff together to pass anything and they're all fighting amongst themselves So what opportunities lie ahead is another question But we have had a treasure trove of opportunities to diminish their credibility as a responsible political party in this country You've also suggested a proactive proposal about advancing proposals to exploit the gap between politically popular measures and the position of the GOP base And the problem is that their base has become so extreme and so Trumpified that it's hard for them to move to the middle A couple of things I've mentioned: One is QAnon this internet group that believes the "deep state" is run by a cabal of pedophiles who are kidnapping children and emptying their adrenal glands in order to get some hormone that helps them live longer but there's going to be a great wave that's going to sweep all the new leaders out and replace them with their rightful leader This is an organization of extreme nonsense substantial segment of the population can believe all this is baffling to me and in addition to that you've got another 50% of Republicans who are not rejecting QAnon completely So let's say in the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi decides that we need a congressional resolution condemning QAnon Because they either have to do something that's going to really anger 25% of their base or they've got to accept that they're creating an issue in the general election campaign this person voted against condemning an organization that says America's governed by pedophiles," and all these strange would find it very difficult to condemn these groups because they've become an important part of the party's base You also suggest some things that can be done to cause problems with the Republican donor base A number of them said they would not support candidates who voted to overturn the election but there has been some movement from those positions That sort of happened as a natural development You also suggest taking votes on different kinds of tax proposals where Republicans either have to go with their donors or go with the vast majority of the American people I think the tax issue was a big opportunity for us but it was not done in the most effective form So you had this big infrastructure bill and you had tax proposals to pay for it The tax proposals basically increased the corporate tax a little bit but also raised taxes on Americans who make more than $400,000 a year How many Americans believe that people who are making $400,000 a year are paying their fair share of taxes if instead of putting this infrastructure thing into one big package we had put the tax proposals first — how we're going to pay for it — and made them vote against raising taxes on Americans making $400,000 a year but I would be shocked if support for that tax increase is not overwhelming And virtually every Republican in Congress has signed a no-tax-increase pledge There would be a lot of squirming over that one You also talk about things I would call splitting the base of GOP supporters You put it in terms of Mitch McConnell's intransigence his refusal to support anything in the Biden agenda But it's not just McConnell and not just in Congress We also see it in governors and state legislatures fighting against masking and vaccines because you've got people going a lot of different ways I think people who got their vaccines are resentful toward the people who haven't gotten them although I think most of the news cycle is putting out the information about DeSantis and it has hurt him but not hurt him at the level you might expect She notes the success of progressive initiative campaigns for medical marijuana and Medicaid expansion There was also the 2018 teachers' strike wave set off in West Virginia and heavily concentrated in red states These are examples of issues in the news cycle Democrats could take advantage of to counter if not reverse that pro-GOP shift I think oftentimes there more votes to harvest where you're doing well than where you're doing poorly If you look at the voters supporting Trump they are struggling financially and really all the programs of the Democrats are favorable to them particularly compared to the sort of things the Republicans advocate The people who support Trump feel looked down upon by Democrats and the liberal elites and the people who live in New York City and Philadelphia and Denver And even though all economic arguments would cause them to vote for a Democrat they feel so resentful about their place in the world that I think they ignore the economic issues and just want to give the elites the finger I guess what I'm saying is that your suggestions seem to point to a way to work against that or at least to make a difference on the margins especially where you've got dedicated grassroots people working in the community on an everyday basis It can help create opportunities that wouldn't be there otherwise If you can move some of these counties that gave 20% to Biden up to 30% I think our opportunity at the current time is just the irresponsible behavior of the Republican Party and their domination by Trump in a way that forces them Adam Kinzinger from Illinois said there are only 10 House Republicans who are dumb enough to believe the election was stolen But all the rest of them are afraid that if they stand up to Trump they'll get a primary and they won't be in Congress anymore although the tolerance of voters for misconduct surprises me every day The greatest barrier I see to the kinds of changes you're proposing is the existing set of institutions dedicated to doing things the way they've always been done But there clearly are a lot of people who see that current practices just aren't working So who might step up and support the changes you're suggesting I got a ton of emails from people who said we need to do this!" But they weren't from anybody who actually made these decisions when I started campaigning for using advanced statistical analysis to gather voter target data Why would you target a precinct when you can target an individual and you know whether or not they're voting what their registration is and all this individual stuff It took 12 years to get the party to finally move It was 12 years on issues it really should have been able to settle with a 30-second conversation What happens is people are making money doing things a certain way They're at a table in the campaign and you know there's a pollster and a media consultant and anything that threatens to mix that up is likely to get opposition The way we're doing things is the same way we've been doing them for 70 years and now the idea that we would have to change is jolting And there's another aspect to this that should be mentioned A campaign can be the best-run campaign ever run So if you're a campaign manager and sort of know how all this works So actual campaigns aren't the ones who would implement this The campaigns raise their own candidate money they're going to spend that money on the candidates The groups that could change this are the three Democratic committees I think the super PACs that have a lot of money are the ones that could step in and really do this One of the first things we've got to do is get messages out there and test how they affect voters you don't have to affect voters very much to make this worthwhile if it affects everyrace on the ballot Just a tiny piece of movement is a big deal over time Paul Rosenberg is a California-based writer/activist senior editor for Random Lengths News and columnist for Al Jazeera English Reproduction of material from any Salon pages without written permission is strictly prohibited Patent and Trademark Office as a trademark of Salon.com Associated Press articles: Copyright © 2016 The Associated Press Alabama alum Marshall Malchow is Georgia's director of player personnel .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Rainer Sabin | rsabin@al.comMatt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.comMarshall Malchow used to sit in the stands at Bryant-Denny Stadium with a feeling of emptiness that gnawed at him Once a three-sport athlete at his high school in Augusta Malchow missed the action and wanted to be part of a team again He especially yearned to be around football Malchow understood there was no chance he would compete for a roster spot at the University of Alabama and that was hard to accept he attempted to fill the void in his life by joining a fraternity and embracing the college lifestyle He fired off emails to people within Alabama’s football office He contacted strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran He got in touch with others inside Nick Saban’s fiefdom Eventually he was introduced to Ed Marynowitz the director of player personnel who had just been hired in late 2008 to transform Saban’s recruiting department into a division that resembled the sophisticated scouting wings inside NFL organizations Malchow did drudge work including logging DVD video Little did he know he was at the forefront of a movement that almost ten years later would carry him to the top of the college football world where on Saturday at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the SEC Championship game he will bear witness to the fruits of his labor The roster of talented athletes scheduled to take the field for Georgia on Saturday has Malchow’s fingerprints all over it, although as director of player personnel he is forbidden from speaking about his contributions. Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart doesn’t allow his staff members to talk to the media, so AL.com chatted with college football sources familiar with Malchow They praised him for his instrumental role in Georgia’s relentless campaign to challenge the Crimson Tide for football supremacy in the South Last February — a month after Smart’s bunch dragged Alabama into overtime of the national title game before losing on 2nd-and-26 — the Bulldogs won the offseason when they finished with the No 1 signing class and removed the Tide from the top spot for the first time in eight years It was the clearest sign yet that Georgia would have staying power and pose a serious threat to Alabama in the future It was also a major coup for the 29-year-old Malchow who was honored as FootballScoop’s Player Personnel Director of the Year before being named to 247Sports’ 30-under-30 list which proved uncomfortable for someone who has spent his professional life operating behind the scenes in relative anonymity Malchow has had to become accustomed to the new-found attention especially when he visited Nashville this past summer for college football’s inaugural Personnel Symposium Malchow was one of the featured panelists at a two-day convention organized by his old boss to promote a segment of the industry that is relatively new and often overlooked As Malchow riffed on the various issues and challenges he has encountered in his job he took in the scene inside the Omni Hotel conference room There was Drew Hughes from Tennessee and Matt Lindsey from South Carolina Not long ago all three were crammed into the same office at Alabama where they were part of an incubator for support staff that was revolutionary in the world of college football While interning for Marynowitz as undergrads they were given an advanced education in recruiting Marynowitz harnessed the talents of student workers assigning them to different divisions within a department that included arms for marketing helping show prospects around on their visits building files on recruits and converting DVD footage to VHS so the old-school Saban could watch with one of those clunky cowboy remotes It was an eye-opening experience as Malchow came to understand the players Saban coveted and the ones he rejected The driving force of this recruiting enterprise was a desire to land the fastest and biggest players who fit Saban’s schemes The commodity most valued in this effort was information With Saban’s nine assistants bogged down with coaching Marynowitz and his underlings were tasked with fact-finding initiating a process that sometimes took years to complete before National Signing Day Malchow witnessed an intricate system in which both in-person assessments and highlight-reel appraisals circulate between multiple people ensuring that a consensus opinion is formed about an individual prospect Malchow began to gravitate toward Smart and appointed himself as the Alabama’s defensive coordinator right-hand man for recruiting According to those inside the program at the time Malchow liked Smart and held him in high regard It also helped that Smart had gone to Georgia — the school where his parents attended and his father once played as a walk-on That prompted him to look elsewhere before he eventually decided to head west to Tuscaloosa where he had been admitted to Alabama’s honors college he elected to major in communications/advertising hoping to achieve a high enough GPA to take advantage of the 503 program that allowed entry to Alabama’s law school without taking the LSAT People inside Alabama’s football offices at the time knew Malchow was destined to continue in football showing a natural eye for talent and a perspicacity that allowed him to apply the knowledge he had gleaned while working under Marynowitz worried he could make a career out of his undergrad vocation Personnel jobs in college football were few and far between at a time when support staffs in the sport were still relatively lean and programs didn’t see the need to devote people exclusively to recruiting But with a span of six months in late 2011 and early 2012 UCF hired Hughes as a personnel director and Boise State’s Chris Petersen came calling for Malchow to assist in the building of the Broncos’ roster That started a whirlwind journey that sent Malchow to Louisville the University of Washington and eventually Georgia where he started working at the dawn of Smart’s tenure Malchow coordinates an operation that aims to provide all the tools and data available to Smart’s coaching staff so that they can make the best decisions on the recruiting trail evaluation and even graphic design intersect in this large-scale effort to construct the best roster possible As Malchow has risen to a point where he is earning a six-figure salary he watched his chosen profession grow before his eyes Interns who once worked under him — just as he did for Marynowitz — started landing jobs of their own They were realizing a dream he never could have conjured back when he was sitting in the stands at Bryant-Denny wondering how he could find his way back to football It was then that Malchow was inspired enough to seek an opportunity that would change his fortunes Malchow will once again see the Tide in action he’ll look on with intense interest as a Georgia staff member watching the team he played a part in shaping go against the program that made his unique career path possible Rainer Sabin is an Alabama beat writer for the Alabama Media Group.
