The ferry port of Meersburg, located on scenic Bodensee, is undergoing an iconic transformation. The aging concrete pier, which has marked the shoreline for more than 70 years, is now giving way to a contemporary steel pier.
This ambitious undertaking is being led by the Public utilities of Constance in close cooperation with the renowned OHF Hafen- und Flussbau GmbH and Baars, which supplies the coupling pontoons.
To accomplish this project, an on-water work platform composed of coupling pontoons is being used. The modular pontoon, equipped with hydraulically driven piles supplied by Baars, forms the solid platform for a dredging crane and drilling equipment.
With dimensions of 36.58 x 12.20 x 1.83 meters and equipped with 3 spud poles, this pontoon provides not only stability but also a safe working environment on the water for the workers involved in this project.

Named Richmond after Konstanz' sister town of Richmond upon Thames in the UK
the ferry was built to a Bureau Veritas-classed design by German engineering firm Technolog Services
Construction began at the Hamburg facilities of shipbuilder Pella Sietas and was taken over by owner Stadtwerke Konstanz in March 2022 and subsequently completed
The new steel-hulled vessel measures 82.5 by 13.4 metres
and has space for 700 passengers and up 64 cars
The design of the vessel itself has been optimised to reduce drag and therefore keep energy consumption as low as possible even with everyday use
The newbuild otherwise boasts a similar appearance to the earlier Stadtwerke Konstanz Ro-Pax ferries Lodi and Tabor
with onboard space for a small snack bar adjacent to the main passenger lounge
high-speed eight-cylinder engines that each produce 746 kW to drive Voith-Schneider propellers to ensure compliance with emissions and noise regulations in place on Lake Constance
which can be configured in the future to also run on bio-LNG as a lower-emission alternative
make Richmond one of the first inland passenger vessels in Europe to be fitted with gas propulsion
the two LNG tanks are housed in separate compartments and an eight-metre-tall ventilation mast is fitted to be used in the event of leaks
It will soon begin serving the Konstanz-Meersburg daily routes alongside the four earlier diesel-powered ferries in the Stadtwerke Konstanz fleet

MI -- The last time George Hartman flew in a B-17 bomber
he was shot down over Nazi Germany and held captive as a prisoner of war for almost one year
Hartman boarded a similar aircraft for the first time in more than 70 years -- this time with a much happier ending
is one of Muskegon's remaining WWII veterans
He was a skilled tail gunner on a B-17 in 1943 and 1944
and spent his final year in the military trying to survive behind enemy lines
In honor of his service, Hartman was awarded two free tickets to ride a visiting B-17 bomber. The Muskegon County Airport is hosting the "Yankee Lady" B-17 throughout the July 4 weekend for ground and flight tours
The contest gave away two $450 tickets for a 45-minute ride
Regular flight tours continue through July 5 starting at 9 a.m
"Isn't that nice?" Hartman said
My son called me and told me he put my name in
I haven't flown in one of these in so many years
With the large bomber perched on the runway
Hartman gazed at the aircraft like a photograph from the '40s
Hartman toured a B-17 with his family at the same airport two years ago
Flying in one was an entirely different prospect
"It brings back a lot of emotions," he said
the day I got shot down was the worst mission I was ever on."
Hartman's tale reads like a wartime novel
and his POW status equips him with some historical celebrity
Yet the experience hangs like cobwebs in his mind
filling him with memories of profound anguish
Hartman pauses and avoids looking at his service through a lens of valor
"War is so foolish," Hartman said
"We fought the First World War as the war to end all wars
and he'll gladly detail what he went through
As Yankee Lady crewmen called him to board
and silently thanked God he survived to fly once more
Hartman was flying his 24th mission with a B-17 squadron over the Pomerania province in Germany
He was making his third trip over Meersburg from his station in England
was a particularly deadly landscape in the European theater of war
Many of the Meersburg targets were heavily guarded oil refineries
It hovered there for 21 minutes like a sitting duck
"Our pilot put us into a dive then," Hartman said
"I guess he was afraid we might lose a propeller as it started to windmill."
Hartman and crew spent the rest of 1944 and part of 1945 in the Stalag Luft IV prison camp
"It's really unbelievable the kind of punishment the human body can take," Hartman said
Hartman caught dysentery and withstood Nazi interrogation
He slept on the ground and ate about 850 calories a day
"The thought of what we would eat once we got home is what kept us going," said Hartman
in between bouts of nervous laughter that only hindsight can muster
Hartman recalled hearing their guns in the distance -- a cold comfort
Hartman made an 86-day journey with Nazi officers through the freezing wilderness
living off the land and dreaming of liberation
Hartman's prayers were answered: Canadian troops battled the Nazi cavalcade and freed Hartman's camp
Two Canadians wrote a book about Hartman's camp and others like it
The book is titled "The Last Escape: The Untold Story of Allied Prisoners of War in Europe
Like the book, Hartman is dedicated to teaching youth about the ravages of war. He travels for speaking engagements and also maintain part of the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tuscon
Richard Mullally is Muskegon's keeper of World War II history. Mullally works with the USS LST 393 museum to memorialize soldiers killed or missing in action during WWII
The pair have swapped war stories more than a dozen times
"These men and women have been given an extra long life," Mullally said
"They have a great opportunity to share important parts of world history
Part of my work is to make sure they're never forgotten."
The loud roar of four propeller engines smoothed out into a rumbling purr
picked up speed and rose gracefully off the ground
Hartman was smiling and maybe shedding a subdued tear

The crane collapsed after the collision and damaged over 50 containers onboard the 1,740 teu ship
The ship hull and part of the wharf were also damaged
A port worker suffered minor injuries in the incident and has been sent to hospital for treatment
The Hansa Meersburg is owned by German owner Leonhardt and Blumberg and operated by Taiwanese company Cheng Lie Navigation
The port authority has started investigations into the incident and the vessel has been banned from leaving the port until the damage assessment is complete
Given the substantial cost of a ship-to-shore container handling gantry crane, one would surmise that every reasonable precaution would be taken in order to ensure that docking/undocking operations will not result in a knockdown. Yet, if the record is closely examined, dozens have been lost over the years. Many examples are found in scrolling down the bullet points at this page: http://www.blueoceana.com/?p=1647

2021The former Maulbronn Monastery in Maulbronn
| Dennis LennoxA recent road trip across Baden-Württemberg
Baden-Württemberg
was created in the aftermath of World War II from the historically separate territories of Baden and Württemberg
For centuries they existed as duchies or kingdoms first within the fragmented Holy Roman Empire and later in the unified German Empire until the various monarchies were abolished following the kaiser’s loss in World War I
including in the religious fabric of Southwest Germany
where Lutheranism came to dominate after the Reformation
adherents of the old religion still make up a plurality in Baden-Württemberg
the capital of this state and a city many know for Mercedes-Benz and Porsche
After spending the night at an airport hotel
and embarked upon a four-night trip that took me to Maulbronn
Calw and Alpirsbach in the Black Forest followed by Reichenau Island
Constance and Meersburg near Lake Constance in the foothills of the Alps
I first stopped at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Maulbronn Monastery in Maulbronn
The remarkably complete and well-preserved medieval monastic complex dates to the first half of the 12th century and includes the former Cistercian abbey church — a Lutheran church since the Reformation — and assorted outbuildings that have been repurposed over the centuries
a self-guided audio tour in English was available
but it allowed me to explore at my own pace and not worry about keeping up with a guide
Hands down the best part of the former monastery is the church’s interior with numerous period architectural and decorative details
including misericords on the underside of the extensive quire stalls
An hour away is Calw, where I would sleep at the Hotel Kloster Hirsau after visiting the ruins of Hirsau Abbey
Destroyed during the Nine Years’ War at the end of the 17th century
the ruins are a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture
the one-time Benedictine abbey resembles a romanticism painting
What appears to be the surviving church was originally a mere chapel
It was heavily modified in a gaudy and inauthentic attempt at Gothic revival in the 19th century for use by the local Lutheran parish
Without much to do besides a walk around the ruins
you might consider skipping Hirsau for more time at the next destination
The Gothic cloister at Alpirsbach Abbey in Alpirsbach, Germany. | Dennis LennoxHaving woke up early the next day I made my way to Alpirsbach
where a Benedictine monastery existed from its founding in the 11th century until the dissolution in the 16th century by the then-duke of Württemberg
cathedralesque edifice — a fine specimen of mostly Romanesque architecture — is
the third iteration of the abbey church and dates to the 12th century
This includes the circa 1130 tympanum above the west front’s doors
a masterpiece wooden altar from the early 1500s is in the north transept
As with the other pre-Reformation monastic churches
the space is presently used for the rites of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Württemberg
incorporated in an adjoining building that originally served as the abbot’s residence
including a rare painted wood Romanesque lectern
were self-explanatory almost nothing was translated
For my second night, I stayed at Hotel St. Elizabeth
The upscale three-star hotel sits on the grounds of a modern-day monastery belonging to the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross
After one of the best breakfasts of my trip, I drove about 5 miles to Reichenau Island
I also wouldn’t have seen the treasury room with its holy relics
Mark the Evangelist and a pitcher used during the wedding at Cana
A short drive away through vineyards and farm fields is the Church of St. George
The Romanesque church looks mostly unchanged since its founding by the archbishop-elector of Mainz
who built the church after receiving the skull of St
one finds a nave lined with spectacular wall paintings
the eight paintings depict biblical miracles performed by Jesus
They are complemented by a depiction of the last judgment from 1708 or 1709 in the west apse
hosted an important pre-reformation church council from 1414 until 1418
a mid-sized university city on Germany’s border with Switzerland
The big draw here is Constance Minster
which hosted the Council of Constance during its centuries-long stint as the cathedral and seat of the prince-bishop of Constance
was presided over by the Holy Roman emperor and
settled the schism that resulted in competing papal claimants
and condemned early Reformer Jan Hus to death by burning at the stake
While its appearance has changed — the church’s exterior was given a Gothic makeover — the Romanesque nave from the time of the council remains largely intact
Running behind schedule and out of daylight, I retrieved my rental car from the underground parking garage at the Fish Market (Fischmarkt) and drove to the car ferry for the shuttle across Lake Constance to Meersburg. Here, I slept at the family-owned Hotel Löwen (more on that later)
the museum café has outdoor seating with million-dollar panoramic views
The cobblestoned streets have something to discover around every corner — think vines growing in every vacant parcel on the steep slope separating the upper and lower old towns, centuries-old half-timbered buildings, and endless other photo opportunities for the Instagram set. One of my unexpected discoveries was the Bible Gallery
which occupies a 500-year-old former Dominican convent next to the tourism office on the aptly named Church Street (Kirchstraße)
Established in 1988 by the Evangelical or Protestant Church in Baden
the multi-floor museum tells the story of the Bible and how it continues to influence daily life even in a highly secular society
Exhibits include countless artifacts and other objects
all of which are intended to have the soft touch of evangelization
There is also a recently revamped English self-guided audio tour
My fourth and final night in Southwest Germany was spent at a countryside inn on the grounds of Salem Monastery and Palace
a Cistercian abbey-turned-palace-turned boarding school
The former Imperial Abbey of Salem was founded in 1136 and
thrived as one of the most prominent monasteries in the Holy Roman Empire until its dissolution in 1803 during the age of Napoleon
The baroque and rococo buildings — the original Gothic abbey church miraculously escaped a great fire in 1697 — were expropriated by the former Grand Duchy of Baden
whose rulers kept most of the estate until 2009 when the state government of Baden-Württemberg purchased everything except a small wing occupied by the 88-year-old margrave of Baden
the one-time monastery is split between a small noble residence and an elite boarding school with visitors admitted during normal hours for sightseeing and tours
the inn’s location beyond the gate means no after-hours access
Germany is fully open to vaccinated Americans
Visitors should be prepared to show proof — the paper vaccine cards with the CDC logo work — at restaurants
especially on stretches of the autobahn highways without a posted speed limit
Just be sure to get a rental with guaranteed GPS navigation
The built-in navigation on my Renault rental was excellent and easy to use after I changed the system’s language to English
you will want to carry some spare change as parking lots don’t generally accept credit card payments
carry plenty of cash because an unusually high number of small shops
restaurants and even hotels in Germany don’t accept credit cards
I would have stayed another night or two at Hotel St
While overnighting at the heart of Meersburg’s old town was memorable
it was also an inconvenience due to the combination of pedestrian streets and extremely limited to nonexistent parking
Information, including at most of the old monasteries and churches covered in this column, was seldom translated. English-speaking guides can be booked through the local tourism offices in Constance and Reichenau
though tours may not be available every day
Expect to use Google Translate at hotel restaurants as English menus were also rare
Despite Delta Air Lines discontinuing its nonstop service from Atlanta to Stuttgart
the airport can still be reached from major U.S

Europe's first inland ferry powered by a high-speed mtu Series 4000 gas engine has just gone into operation on Lake Constance
will cross Lake Constance eight to nine times a day
carrying up to 700 passengers and 64 cars from Meersburg to Constance and back
It joins a fleet of five other ferries that are all powered by mtu engines
The Richmond is the first inland ferry in the world to be powered by high-speed
The two eight-cylinder mtu Series 4000 engines each provide 746 kilowatts of power and operate with less noise and vibration than a diesel engine
while keeping emissions below the current IMO III nitrogen oxide limits
A multipoint gas injection system ensures dynamic acceleration behaviour while the turbocharging system enables sufficient power reserves throughout the entire speed range for difficult driving manoeuvres
the ferry operator hopes to run the ship on bio-liquified natural gas (LNG) and thus be completely climate-neutral
The crew onboard – including captain Oli Hermann and his colleagues Timo Bakaric and Dieter Ehinger – are already familiar with our mtu engines
from the gas processing and heating and cooling systems to the heat recovery
Timo and Dieter have been grateful for the support the Rolls-Royce team has provided in getting the new drive system up and running
"We already know each other from previous projects
so it worked out well again this time," says Dieter
He and Timo were recently able to visit the Netherlands
where two ferries are already running with mtu gas engines
"The good experiences of our colleagues there motivated us to set up our system," Dieter continues
Each of the two engines on board has its own fuel tank
each able to carry up to 18 cubic metres of LNG – enough to keep the ferry running 24 hours a day for a week
The tanks maintain the LNG at a temperature of minus 160 degrees Celsius so that it remains liquid.
When the fuel is needed to power the ship’s drive system
the Gas Processing Unit (GPU) brings it back into a gaseous state before it’s fed through to the two separate engine rooms
Gas Regulation Units (GRUs) then ensure the correct pressure for the gas to enter the engines themselves
thus supplying the energy for the two propellers and the generators
It’s a complex system but to captain Oli Hermann
the ferry seems to drive like any other: "Every ferry has its own peculiarities and drives a little differently
whether there is a diesel or a gas engine in the engine compartment
"The engines have a particularly smooth running culture and purr quietly like a kitten," adds Dieter

Bodensee (Lake Constance) measuring 39 miles (ca
is central Europe’s third-largest freshwater lake
Lake Constance also shares borders with Austria and Switzerland
It has three distinct segments: Obersee (Upper Lake)
Untersee (Lower Lake) and Seerhein (a 4 km river connecting the 2 sub-lakes)
Zeller See located in the Untersee is sometimes listed as a separate segment
Lake Constance is an extension of the famous Rhine River
The Rhine flows into the lake from the south and continues its journey to the Baltic Sea leaving from the west
The receding of the Rhine Glacier of the last Ice Age left a magnificent landscape with mountains and valleys
Over the centuries the Rhine has filled one of these deep valleys creating the lakes
the waters were higher leaving islands in the lake that show signs that they were below the surface in the past
Underwater you will see a landscape similar as above the water with underwater cliffs and sloping mountainsides
There has been recorded 45 species of fish in Lake Constance
While the surface water may warm some during the summer
once you drop below the surface the water is a fairly constant 50°F
Divers will find over two dozen outstanding dive sites that include drop-offs
Most of the diving is found in the Obersee
there are dive sites and dive operators in the other areas as well
While there are some dive sites that are suitable for newer divers
Lake Constance is mainly for more experienced divers
Many of the dive sites are deep and in the technical diving range
There are a number of rules that govern the diving on Bodensee
The Bodensee-Schifffahrts-Ordnung (BSO) has the most impact on diving
It closes some dive sites in the summer months due to increase boating and shipping activity
Divers with Open Water certifications must dive with a dive center and be accompanied
Diving on these sites is also best as accompanied because of liability and permit issues
After-Work dives are very popular with the local divers
Here are some of the best dive destinations and the best dive site of the destination
Lake Constance is called the four-country region: Germany
While the Principality of Liechtenstein does not border the lake
Each year an estimated 60 million people visit the area as day visitors with millions more staying for extended stays
the lake and surrounding area is popular year round
This is not an international destination as about 95% of the visitors come from the four countries
The local geography gives it a milder winter than the surrounding area
Lake Constance is divided into different regions
Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen is the only international airport in the four countries region
there are seven other international airports within a two-hour drive of the area
The European rail system is outstanding with many cities are directly connected to Lake Constance:
and St.Gallen have a coach service from many European cities
Coach and ferry service connects many of the cities around the lake
While in Bodensee you should purchase the Bodensee Erlebniskarte (Bodensee Card PLUS) to enhance your visit
You can purchase either a summer version (April to Oct)or a winter version (Oct to April)
The summer version can be either a three or seven-day pass
You can select the days to use over the season
The three-day summer pass allows usage of the ferries for two of the three days and three days admissions at over 160 locations

A full day’s drive across northern France to Metz
for a wholesome family holiday by the water
After four months in lockdown it had an adventurous ring to it
and the kids were nearly as excited as we were
my two daughters (aged 11 and 8) wide-eyed and wide awake
singing from the back seat as we zipped out of London for the first time since February
and it was comforting to be travelling in our own car
in our own space — less of an uprooting and more of a gradual shift to somewhere different
And how thrilling to emerge on the other side
to see endless fields and familiar battlefield names and road signs in a different language
Even the petrol station croissants were exciting
and suddenly all the open spaces concertinaed down into the winding roads and deep valleys of the Black Forest
from jaunty French pop to moody German rap (which is as good as it sounds)
and it struck us how much you miss when you fly to a destination
Had we been on a plane we would never have happened on the world’s largest cuckoo clock
We joined a small gathering of masked tourists to watch it strike six
the mournful bird trundling out of the top floor of its wooden house to give an underwhelming “cuck-oooo”
Quirky displays at the botanical-garden island of MainauALAMYAnd then the views broadened and the fields widened
at the shuttered-up holiday home of my German relatives
to throw open the windows as dusk fell over the water
The girls raced down the lawn and were in the lake in minutes
even though I’d been there countless times
the first breakfast of fresh bread rolls from the baker up the road
which is odd given how beautiful the lake is
Constance is one of Europe’s largest lakes
stretching for about 40 miles between Germany
Switzerland and Austria: a sort of quieter
less showy Como; a friendlier Lake Geneva — clean
deeply forested banks and surrounded by old villages
with its pretty medieval centre — slap bang next to Switzerland
which means that all the roads have separate cycle tracks
We trundled through sunflower and cornfields fringed with fruit trees
stopping to eat plums and apples straight from the branches
We dragged the girls out for morning walks
with the promise of cheesecake at the awkwardly named Fuchshof farm shop (“Did you just say the f-word
where we stocked up on home-pressed apple juice
pumpkin bread and huge punnets of cherries
Imperia stands at the entrance of the harbour in KonstanzALAMYPeace is what we craved
Even the daily wrestle to get the girls off screens was easier here; the lure of the lake was more powerful than the drudgery of yet another park walk in north London
straight from the shore or from paddleboards out in the deep green
new regulations were handled with admirable efficiency
Every restaurant had stringent signing-on rules
masks were ubiquitous and all attractions had to be booked
riots of floral displays and a huge butterfly house
with waterfalls and turtle-filled ponds that put those at London Zoo to shame
home to 250 Barbary macaques roaming freely in a forest
where we strolled along paths watching them leap about
before sausages and spätzle in the beer garden
is a handmade pasta that accompanies pretty much everything
from grilled lake fish to sausages (there were a lot of sausages)
a garden restaurant in the countryside where the girls wandered around the attached stables and decided that what was missing in their lives was a pony
they got to go to the catchily named Wild- und Freizeitpark (Wildlife and Leisure Park) Allensbach — basically the world’s greatest outdoor adventure playground
zip wires and a miniature railway that I remembered from my childhood
the constantly changing news was taxing and
new quarantine rules meant we had to rethink our journey home a fortnight later
Driving nonstop through France would be impossible — instead
we’d have to head north through Germany then hang a left through Belgium
We waved goodbye to the lake and set off through endless forests and fields to Aachen
Germany’s most westerly city and home to one of Europe’s oldest cathedrals
dating from the reign of Charlemagne in the 9th century
and without the balm of iPads to smooth the journey too

Germany’s past is written across its landscapes, from the Roman frontier to medieval fortresses and the echoes of empire. It was here that Charlemagne forged the foundations of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century, where Martin Luther ignited the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, and where the Thirty Years’ War reshaped Europe’s borders
The country has seen the rise and fall of kingdoms
yet its deep historical roots remain intact
Germany also hides a treasure trove of medieval towns with their towering castles
others served as strongholds or royal residences
and many have remained largely unchanged for centuries
Whether exploring a fortress perched above a river
these destinations allow visitors to step back in time and experience Germany’s rich and layered history firsthand
Quedlinburg, a picturesque town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, boasts a rich history dating back over a millennium. First documented in 922 AD, it gained prominence when King Henry the Fowler was buried here in 936, and his widow, Queen Matilda
established a women’s convent in his honor
This convent became a center of power and culture
with its abbesses governing the town for centuries
Quedlinburg is celebrated for its well-preserved medieval architecture
featuring over 2,000 half-timbered houses spanning six centuries
The town’s skyline is dominated by the Collegiate Church of St
a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture housing a renowned medieval treasury
Adjacent to the church stands the Quedlinburg Castle
offering panoramic views of the old town and the surrounding Harz region
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994
Quedlinburg invites visitors to explore its cobblestone streets
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a living testament to medieval Germany
it flourished as a Free Imperial City from 1274 to 1803
its well-preserved architecture offers a journey back in time
Visitors can stroll atop the intact city walls
offering panoramic views of the town’s half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets
where festivals and markets bring the square to life
is one of Rothenburg’s most photographed spots
For history enthusiasts, the Medieval Crime Museum provides insights into ancient legal practices, while the RothenburgMuseum showcases art and artifacts spanning centuries. The town’s rich heritage is further celebrated during annual events like the “Reiterlesmarkt,” a traditional Christmas market that transforms the town into a winter wonderland
First mentioned in 928 AD, Dinkelsbühl, a picturesque town in Bavaria, became a Free Imperial City in 1273 and flourished during the 14th and 15th centuries
The town’s historic center is encircled by 10th-century fortifications
visitors can admire the charming half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets
a Gothic masterpiece constructed in the 15th century
Its impressive tower offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside
Dinkelsbühl’s rich history is celebrated annually during the “Kinderzeche” festival in July
This historic festival commemorates the town’s successful defense during the Thirty Years’ War and features colorful parades
Perched on the northern shore of Lake Constance
Meersburg is a charming town in Baden-Württemberg
translating to “Castle by the Sea,” reflects its origins centered around the historic Meersburg Castle
is considered one of Germany’s oldest inhabited castles
with its central tower dating back to the 7th century
Visitors can explore over 35 furnished rooms
