It’s a simple and popular science class experiment: a volcano made with baking soda and vinegar erupts
viewing the power of volcanic forces doesn’t require a school lesson
Beneath the surface lies a network of basalt caves carved by human hand from ancient lava flows
The Mendig Lava Caverns make up the largest basalt mine of its kind in the world
my wife and I ventured to the town of Mendig
to start our day at the German Volcano Museum
it provides an engaging and family-friendly introduction to vulcanology
We started our tour in the immersive Vulkankino
where a simulated volcanic eruption made the ground tremble beneath us as wind blew in our faces
The lights dimmed and the screen erupted into chaos as a plume of ash spewed into the sky
we could picture ourselves standing in the midst of the cataclysm
Though the short presentation was in German
we downloaded a free English audio guide from the website
which we started using in the second-floor Volcano Workshop
visitors get hands-on experiences like walking on a vibrating stand simulating tectonic plate shifts
The Lava Dome’s collection of volcanic rocks and artifacts is as impressive as it is informative
One highlight for me was the “Lava Bomb.” This 159-pound basalt boulder was catapulted into the sky 13,000 years ago during the cataclysmic eruption of the Laach Lake volcano
One of my favorite exhibits bridged the gap between past and present with a believable mock TV news clip that reported on a fictitious new eruption of the Laach Lake volcano
It played out like a real emergency broadcast
detailing the catastrophic effects a modern-day eruption would have on this part of Germany
The chances of such an outbreak are remote
but can’t completely be ruled out by experts
the true star of the show is the lava caves
whose entrance is located a few hundred yards from the museum in the courtyard of a former Mendig beer brewery
A visit to the cavernous underground requires a professional escort
we met a smiling museum tour guide on one of the daily public tours and donned helmets and rain jackets before descending into the depths
The cool air hit us as we made our way down the steep stairs
where the temperature is a steady 45 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit year-round
supported by massive hexagonal basalt columns created by the cooling and cracking of ancient lava flows
The distinctive geometric shapes of the columns
While the tour guide delivered his anecdotes in German
we continued to tune into the mobile cellphone guide to learn how these manmade caverns
which stretch up to 1 square mile underneath the town
are not just geological marvels but also an important part of Mendig’s history
miners painstakingly quarried the basalt by hand
shaping it into building material and millstones
the caverns found a new purpose: beer storage
With 28 breweries once operating in the area
following the arrival of commercial refrigeration in the beverage industry and closure of mining operations in the 1980s
piles of discarded items from the past decades
a stark reminder of how these historic spaces have once been misused
The beer here is still cooled in the old volcanic caverns
refreshing drink was a great way to cap off our visit to the museum
We rounded out our trip with a drive to Laach Lake
we learned that though the last eruption was thousands of years ago
minor seismic activity and escaping volcanic gases today hint that the volcano below is not entirely dormant
But that reminder didn’t stop us from enjoying a stroll along its shores
a positively placid way to top off our fun and informational journey
Lava Dome: German Volcano Museum in Mendig
Closed from the second Sunday of December until Dec
and from the end of Christmas holidays until Jan
Cost: Admission for the lava dome visitor center and caverns is 9.50 euros for adults and 7.50 for kids under 16
with a cost of 7.80 euros for parents and 6.30 euros for children

How you present yourself to another person strikes a mental image in their mind
and sets up the expectations as you move forward
a new event organized by German automotive streetwear brand Camber
Camber had a great venue – Mendig Airfield
just outside of the river city of Koblenz in Germany’s Rheinland-Palatinate state
The event combined a stance show with live action demos
plus skateboarding in an area that featured a junkyard BMW E36 as an obstacle
The weather kind of ruined the latter though
the quality of cars across the board was completely on point
I first heard about To Hell earlier this year when I was planning my summer of car events
a few noteworthy builds in Germany’s stance scene had been confirmed
including Holyhall’s custom tube-frame Ford Capri and an LTO-kitted BMW E36 Coupe
more and more interesting cars were confirmed for the event
To say I was hyped would be a massive understatement
other than a sign that read ‘Camber’ and the faint sound of an engine at full-throttle
there wasn’t anything to suggest what awaited inside
But that all changed once I passed through the main gate
To my left and right were numerous stance cars parked in front of the airfield hangars
That came from a Porsche 911 by German tuner 9FF while it made another high-speed pass down the makeshift runway drag strip
Most of the cars on show were unsurprisingly from Germany
The latter included this Audi TT RS with wild forged carbon fiber overfenders and turbofans
This Montecarlo Blue Honda S2000 stood out for simplicity and cleanliness
Work Meister S1 wheels are a rare sight in Germany
including a set of RAYS-made Nismo LMGT1 wheels
While it is commonplace to see JDM wheels on European cars
This Toyota Chaser bucks the trend with a set of OZ Racing Futuras
Camber has some extra special builds on show
R44 Performance brought its BMW M3 Touring over from the UK and not just for display purposes
The curated selection continued with everything from an immaculate R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R to multiple tuned Porsche 911s and a few BMWs not often seen in the stance scene
Holyhall’s Group 5 Ford Capri tribute was easily the wildest car on show at To Hell
Of the original rusted-out Mk3 Capri chassis the build began as only sections of the roof and doors remain
from the tube-frame chassis to the in-board pushrod rear suspension on full display through the back window
and I have a spotlight coming up that will shine a light on all the work that went into its creation
It wasn’t just stance cars at To Hell; German collector ChromeCars brought two BMW race cars
along with the previously mentioned drag demos by 9FF and R44 Performance
and the team behind the brand has had experience with high-profile events in Germany and the rest of Europe like Ultrace and XS CarNight
I’m excited to see what’s next for To Hell

That's pretty unheard of over here in the states
Love it!what an amazing selection of cars and lovely venue

Rock am Ring staff and concert-goers hurt as lightning hits backstage and camping areas of festival in Mendig
Thirty-three people have been hurt after lightning struck twice at one of Germany’s biggest music festivals
The Rock am Ring festival in the town of Mendig
was hit by two lightning strikes in the early hours of Saturday morning
The first strike hit the backstage area at about 1am
injuring eight people from the festival’s production teams
Organisers later halted concerts and offered visitors shelter in large
hitting the festival’s camping area and injuring a further 25 people
Police said all of those injured had been taken to hospital for observation and were in good health
About 90,000 music fans were expected at the event
which is being headlined by Foo Fighters and the Prodigy
The Ferrari 488 Pista recently lapped the Mending track in Germany in a blistering 1:40.60
The unofficial lap record set last month at the lesser-known racetrack by professional racing driver Christian Menzel places the 488 Pista 1.5 seconds ahead of the McLaren 720S
and 1.7 seconds in front of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS
Video: The Ferrari SF90 Stradale Sets A New Top Gear Lap Record
Further down the chart we find the Komo-Tec Ariel Atom, Corvette C7 Luzifer by Tikt Performance, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro and Lamborghini Aventador SV, in this order, with the latter posting a 1:44.81, according to AutoMotorUndSport. Other hot vehicles put through their paces on the Mendig include the AC Schnitzer’s BMW M5 F90
The 488 Pista used to hold the lap record at the Top Gear test track as well, with The Stig posting a 1:12.7 almost two years ago, half a second quicker than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and a second faster than the McLaren 675LT. Last October, the Italian supercar lost the crown to another Ferrari, the SF90 Stradale
The spiritual successor of the 458 Speciale made its official debut in 2019 with a modified version of the twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8
which pumps out 710 HP (720 PS / 530 kW) at 8,000 rpm and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm in 7th gear
the 488 Pista needs a mere 2.85 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill and has a top speed in excess of 211 mph (340 km/h)
The Lava Dome - German Volcano Museum Mendig presents volcanism in the region around the Laacher See volcano
The landscape around the Laacher See volcano is unique in Europe
volcanism is only "sleeping" and is not considered extinct
The volcano park was set up to introduce people to the fascination of the life- and death-giving energy from the depths of the earth
and the Lava Dome was established as a very special museum
On 700 square metres it is not "museum-like"
for absolute newcomers and for those who are pre-informed about volcanism
a multimedia show tells the story of two huge volcanic eruptions that had an enormous impact on the landscape of the volcanic Eifel: the eruption of the Wingertsberg volcano
on whose lava flow the town of Mendig stands
sounds and projections let you relive a volcanic eruption - up close and intense
The "Volcano Workshop" is a genuine small science centre
At ten interactive test and experimental stations
visitors gain a vivid impression of the processes inside the earth and get a taste of volcanology
The "Time of the Volcanoes" lets stones speak: Anyone who touches them can hear and see how the great eruptions of the past took place
Particularly exciting are also current seismological data on volcanic eruptions and earthquakes as well as current images from webcams all over the world
A re-enactment of a research camp illustrates the methods and techniques used by scientists to study volcanoes
a fictitious news programme worthy of Hollywood takes your breath away
because here it becomes clear what a renewed eruption of the Laacher See volcano would mean

The latest Audi RS4 Avant is not only a great daily driver
as proved in this video that shows it going for a fast lap at a lesser known racetrack in Germany: the Mendig
which puts it one tenth of a second ahead of the Aston Martin DB11 and almost three tenths of a second in front of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
Other cars that were slower than the 2020 RS4 Avant, according to AutoMotorUndSport’s video description, are the Lotus Exige S, Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Lexus RC F, BMW M2
Renault Megane RS Trophy and Alfa Romeo 4C
Review: The 2020 Audi RS4 Avant Will Rock Your World
The BMW M2 Competition, Jaguar F-Type R and Porsche Boxster Spyder, on the other hand, completed the course a bit quicker than the RS4. The fastest production car on the Mendig is the Ferrari 488 Pista
followed by the McLaren 720S and Porsche 911 GT2 RS
The 2020 RS4 Avant uses a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 which drives the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission
It pumps out 444 HP (450 PS / 331 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque
enabling a 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 4.1 seconds and a 155 mph (250 km/h) top speed
or 174 mph (280 km/h) with the speed limiter removed
While the RS4 Avant is not available in the States, its bigger and more powerful sibling, the RS6 Avant
It starts at $109,000 and packs a 592 HP 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8
and it needs just 3.5 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h)
When punk and metal were separate entities
like jealous cousins ready to fight at any given opportunity
a fucked up rockabilly band brought them together
of course; they were “proto grunge.” They were probably THE “proto grunge” band
They had songs on Sub Pop 100 and Deep Six compilations
They played all over the northwest before there was anywhere to play
They were there first and they influenced everybody that came afterwards
But that’s not what’s important about the U-Men
yet added elements of metallic dissonance that expanded on their vocabulary
predating some of the things added by greats like the Jesus Lizard and Oxbow
It’s no wonder Tom Hazelmyer joined the band briefly and
had them contribute tracks to Dope-Guns-’N-Fucking In The Streets on his seminal Amphetamine Reptile label
you can witness their influence on future AmRep bands
You can also see that they were a link between the national network of skronk just starting to happen at the time and local talent like Green River
they were a band playing lively music for perverted people
There’s a lot of good music out there
and it’s not all being released this year
we aim to rediscover overlooked artists and genres
to listen to music historically and contextually
our focus will be on music that’s not being pushed by a PR firm
At least 71 people are injured and eight taken to hospital after severe electrical storms hit festival site near Frankfurt
A rock music festival in Germany was halted for five hours after lightning strikes injured 71 people, and organisers urged more than 90,000 fans to seek shelter in cars and tents as another thunderstorm approached.
The sell-out Rock am Ring festival, now in its 31st year and with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Black Sabbath headlining this year, takes place at the airport in Mendig, near the Nürburgring motor racing track.
Festival organisers told a news conference that performances would resume after the storm blew over, and said they had warned about 92,500 participants to be prepared for bad weather before they arrived.
“We are not considering cancelling the festival,” said spokeswoman Katharina Wenisch.
A spokesman for the German Red Cross said 71 people were injured during the lightning strikes in the early hours of Saturday morning, including eight who were taken to hospital. Most were now in good condition, except one man who had to be resuscitated at the scene and remained in hospital, he said.
“The festival will continue as planned,” Marek Lieberberg, who runs the festival, told fans on the event website. He said the festival would continue to issue weather warnings on its site, Facebook and Twitter.
Organisers warned fans more severe thunderstorms were expected.
The event website had reported early on Saturday that at least 42 people were injured, eight seriously. The numbers rose as more fans reported injuries in the early hours, according to a police spokesman.
Thirty-three people were injured by lightning strikes at the festival last year, according to German media.
Wenisch said the festival had been sold out for months.
German summer music festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park have announced their expanded lineups for next June
Held over the weekend of June 2nd to 4th with the Rock im Park being held at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg
and ‘Rock am Ring‘ will take place at Flugtplaz Mendig in Mendig
Other artists now scheduled to play include:
Phil Foden scored his fifth goal of the month to help Manchester City beat Bournemouth 1-0 and pile the pressure on title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal
Pep Guardiola’s side had to contend with local fireworks
a misfiring Erling Haaland and a second-half onslaught from the hosts before they left the south coast with a 15th victory from their last 17 matches
This latest triumph was thanks to Foden’s 24th-minute tap-in
but it was the Cherries who did most of the running from there afterwards and were unlucky to lose with Marcus Tavernier squandering two fine chances
this win for the champions keeps them firmly in the hunt for another title ahead of a bumper month of March with league clashes to come with Manchester United
City had edged past Brentford on Tuesday night thanks to a goal from Haaland
but his shooting boots deserted him after nine minutes at Vitality Stadium
Sent through after Foden had flicked on Bernardo Silva’s lofted pass
current Premier League top goalscorer Haaland curled the ball wide from 20 yards to spark big cheers from the home faithful
The Bournemouth fans were almost on their feet celebrating 60 seconds later when Andoni Iraola watched his team create an opening for left-back Milos Kerkez
Read more: Premier League table of points lost from a winning position
Chances remained at a premium with the main first-half flashpoint Adam Smith’s forceful tackle on Matheus Nunes until Foden continued his outstanding month with a 24th-minute opener
It was more akin to route one than excellent football with Kovacic able to chip the ball into the path of Haaland
who brilliantly rolled Marcos Senesi before Neto saved his effort but Foden stroked home from close range for his sixth goal involvement of February
Guardiola was on his haunches moments later when Silva failed to play through Haaland as City started to get into their stride with a Rodri effort also bravely blocked by Ryan Christie
Bournemouth had spent most of the first half allowing their frustration with referee Jarred Gillett to get the better of them
but eventually posed City problems with Ederson called upon to parry Christie’s low effort in stoppage-time
Whether Iraola’s team could keep it up was another question
but they fashioned a decent opening which was wasted by Kerkez early into the second period
Justin Kluivert tried his luck soon after and
while Ederson saved his 25-yard strike – not for the first time – the City goalkeeper looked unconvincing
The champions nearly highlighted their overwhelming power minutes later when Haaland bundled his way into the area
but Illia Zabarnyi got back well to block with his backside
It failed to halt Bournemouth’s momentum and they should have levelled in the 55th minute
Antoine Semenyo again got the better of Nathan Ake and his cross found Marcus Tavernier
but the Cherries attacker fired his effort into the ground and Ruben Dias headed the wayward shot clear for good measure
Bournemouth were in the ascendancy now and another guilt-edged chance was squandered when in-form Dominic Solanke twisted away from Dias and set up Taverner
Guardiola had seen enough and Jeremy Doku was the first to get the call from a star-studded bench but it did not have the desired effect
The latest chance for the hosts came and went with 67 minutes played when Taverner’s inswinging corner found Solanke
but his header was clawed away on the goaline by Ederson and Kerkez’s follow-up shot was blocked by Rodri
Fireworks were let off close by to the stadium moments later before Haaland was substituted by an increasingly-agitated Guardiola
with 15 minutes left straight after Neto had denied the Norway international from close range
Iraola’s team carried on taking the fight to the visitors and after Dango Ouattara arrowed an effort wide
the final opportunity of the night went to Bournemouth’s January recruit Enes Unal
but he headed Semenyo’s cross off target to ensure City claimed the points

Karachi : Unidentified men dug up the grave of a woman in a graveyard in the city’s Landhi Town area and raped the dead body
according to the deceased’s family who said they did not wish to file any cases regarding the horrible incident
A large number of the late woman’s relatives
reached Ismail Goth Graveyard after they were alerted of the heinous act
They were informed that some men had dug up the grave of the deceased — who had been buried just one day earlier — and raped the body.It was unclear how many men were involved in the unthinkable act
The family further said the undertaker responsible for the maintenance and upkeep in the graveyard told them that a dog had removed the slab from the freshly-made grave
They did not think a dog would be capable of removing the slab from a grave
adding that the grave-digger vanished from the graveyard later
have gathered evidence from the site of the crime and confirmed that the grave-digger was nowhere to be found
Searches were being carried out to look for and detain him
