If you call the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany home, and know anything about local street drifting scenes, there’s a good chance you would have heard of the Skids and Tea blog
friends Lars and Sebastiaan began posting photos and videos of their late-night street adventures in two Mazda MX5s
these drives finished up with licorice tea at the end of the night
While Sebastiaan eventually began focusing on other hobbies
Lars kept things going and Skids and Tea grew
By documenting his and his friends’ builds and after-dark antics here in the Netherlands and abroad
Lars has created a tight-knit community of passionate drifters who appreciate early-2000s Japanese drift car style
I have attended several Skids and Tea street meets over the years
and as they’ve always been kept small and selective
As you may have seen from various show coverage on Speedhunters, there’s a pretty large modified car scene in the Netherlands
Some of that can be put down to accessibility
there is only one circuit that caters for drifting in the Netherlands
and that’s just a tiny oval track with a three-corner infield and a very sketchy concrete outer bank
The other two tracks that once allowed drifting stopped doing so due to noise and pollution complaints
Those complaints ultimately led to drifting only being allowed on wet tracks to keep the noise and smoke to an absolute minimum – a rule that many other circuits in Europe have adopted
Another factor might be the number of ‘’missiles’ that have historically attended drift Dutch events
these are BMW E36s that are no longer identifiable as a sedan
coupe or compact because their whole rear end has seen more concrete barriers than car washes
but I’m sure that many people are put off by having to share track space with these rough and ready machines
This is why many Dutch and German drifters skip local days altogether
instead setting their sights on events like Next Level and Shotsu Drift in Poland
But these are ultra-popular and competitor numbers are
so not everyone entering from abroad gets a spot
Lars decided it was time for a more style-oriented and non-competitive drift day closer to home
He reached out to the owners of Circuit Meppen
a short (2.15km/1.34mi) yet technical track located in Meppen
Germany – just 15 minutes from the Netherlands border – built on the grounds of a former power plant
Lars and Circuit Meppen reached an agreement
All 50 driver slots for the first event held late last month quickly filled from within the Skids and Tea community
And what a day it was; the variety and quality of cars were amazing
As the track surface needed to be wet – this circuit has the drift restriction as well – only a part of the full layout could be used
This consisted of some nice cambered corners and fast sections
The lack of tyre smoke was compensated with good vibes
just loads of seat time for drivers and passengers
with everyone helping each other out and sharing knowledge
Koen de Laat, better known as KUHNS, was at the event in his E21, which you might recognise from my feature on it back in March
which resulted in the BMW’s turbo M10 engine blowing its head gasket later in the day
The Polderlife boys are well known in Europe for their aggressive driving style and were living up to that reputation at Circuit Meppen
Let me know if you want to see more of Mick and his 2JZ-swapped Toyota Cressida, a combination originally seen in a certain blue Norwegian X30
If you thought Adam LZ had bought them all up
but two cars running Blitz Type 03 wheels at the event
This lineup of old-school Toyotas looked like a scene straight from Japan
throw his AE86 around all day made me remember how much I miss my Hachiroku
Sidney, the owner of this clean R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R on 18-inch BBS wheels, is the same guy who built the white, authentic ’90s-styled PS13 Silvia we featured in 2023
this first-generation Mazda RX-7 had plenty of fun on the wet track
I really can’t say enough good things about this event
It felt like a day at the skatepark when you were younger
it inspired me to build an ’80s rear-wheel drive car again
The next Skids and Tea at Meppen date is already booked and blocked off in my calendar with a big fat marker
Drifting related stories on Speedhunters
Grass roots drifting > professional drifting
Another great morning read and look from Collin
The wet track rule must be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life
Thank god such "progress" has yet to arrive in my country
I need to straighten the body on my e36 drift car

Selke and Glatzel all scored their first goals for HSV in the side’s comprehensive 7-1 victory over SV Meppen in the first round of the 2024/25 DFB-Pokal
Hamburger SV put a whopping seven goals past SV Meppen in a dominant display at the Hänsch-Arena
which saw the visitors cruise into the second round of this season’s DFB-Pokal
Steffen Baumgart’s side proved just why they were the favourites
enjoying the vast majority of possession throughout the 90 minutes
Immanuel Pherai struck the first blow (17’)
followed by another from Miro Muheim (30’)
seeing the visitors head into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead
David Selke made his mark and secured the side’s third (56’)
with Pherai completing his brace shortly after (59’) and Fabio Balde also adding to the tally (71')
Robert Glatzel then joined in on the action (89’), with Tim Möller's own goal increasing the advantage to seven
followed by a consolation goal from Daniel Haritonov seconds before the end (90’)
Dompe and Elfadli were all absent from HSV’s first-round clash
with the midfielder unable to join the squad on their journey to Sunday’s game due to ankle problems
with Pherai in the attacking midfield (seeing Reis positioned deeper)
The Rothosen started the game on the front foot
yet were unable to create any clear-cut chances in the opening stages
HSV then turned things up a notch and broke through the defensive unit - Meffert teed up Pherai
who fired a low strike into the bottom left corner from distance
leaving goalkeeper Pünt with no chance (17’)
the visitors found the back of the net once again from an almost identical position
seeing Muheim’s free kick curl over the Meppen wall and soar past Pünt (30’)
which would have been three if Meffert’s header goal hadn’t been chalked off due to offside just prior to half time (41’)
Despite a glimmer of hope being present amongst the home supporters when play resumed at the sold-out Hänsch-Arena
HSV were quick to extinguish any chance of a comeback for SV Meppen
who came into action for the visitors after the break
immediately impressed with an excellent finish on his first touch of the game just one minute after being brought on for Jatta (56’)
HSV then romped into a four-goal lead shortly after
with Pherai bagging his second of the evening (59’)
who made his starting XI debut for the side in Sunday’s encounter
Möller’s back pass trickled into the Meppen net due to some poor control from goalkeeper Pünt (80’)
The final nail in the coffin came in the 89th minute
which saw Glatzer celebrate his comeback from injury in style after nodding home the side’s seventh from a Karabec corner (89’)
Haritonov was able to secure a consolation goal for SV Meppen in added time
yet it was too little too late for the hosts
whose DFB-Pokal campaign was cut short by a dominant HSV side
The Rothosen will make their next outing in the tournament on either the 29th or 30th October
Prasse (70' Zumdieck) - Stuhlmacher (46' Schepp)
Muheim (64' Katterbach) - Jatta (55' Selke)
Pherai (75' Heyer) - Königsdörffer

Bayern Munich are back to their winning ways in Matchday 6 of the Frauen-Bundesliga
The FC Bayern Frauen triumphed 3-1 over SV Meppen to retain second place in the table; elsewhere
VfL Wolfsburg survived a late scare from SV Werder Bremen to stay perfect on a 3-2 win
After the last-minute winner against Benfica in the Champions League midweek
but a bit of clever goalkeeping kept things scoreless going into the second half
with the score still nil-nil heading into the 70th minute
But that's when the fireworks started. Linda Dallmann's driving run provided the spark for Bayern yet again this season, with the ball eventually worked out to the left wing for Klara Bühl to bury. Minutes later, a cross from transfer window arrival Emelyne Laurent found Lea Schüller in the center of the box
The 18-year-old Kett has made the most of her appearances off the bench this year
and now has a goal to add to her two assists in the league
in which all four goals were scored in a twelve-minute span near the end
The Bayern Frauen next face SC Freiburg on Saturday

It goes without saying that FC Schalke 04’s aim at the Nevernot Cup on Saturday (6/7) was to finish first and come away with the trophy, but the Royal Blues ended up in second place following a 1-0 loss against Kickers Emden and a 4-2 victory over hosts SV Meppen.
For Karel Geraerts, however, there were two more important takeaways from the pre-season tournament. The Schalke players managed to avoid picking up any injuries ahead of next week’s training camp in Mittersill, and the majority of the squad got some game time. Just like in the first friendly of the season – a 7-0 triumph over SSVg Velbert – 22 of the Royal Blues were in action for 45 minutes each.
“For me, it was important to give as many players as possible 45 minutes of game time,” explained the Belgian. “The boys have worked hard in training this week. I’m happy that nobody got injured.” Geraerts will be hoping to see more of the same from his side at their pre-season training camp in Mittersill, which gets underway on Monday (8/7).
It’s unbelievable, it’s amazing. It makes us feel really, really proud.
FC Schalke 04 will face Eintracht Braunschweig at the VELTINS-Arena on the opening matchday of the 2024/25 2. Bundesliga season, pitting new signings Ron-Thorben Hoffmann and Anton Donkor against their old club. The game will either be played on 3rd or 4th August.
The second week of pre-season saw a new face join up with the rest of Karel Geraerts’ squad on Monday (1/7). New signing Moussa Sylla trained for the first time with his new team after being given a few days extra holiday.
After a break of just over a month since the end of the league season, Karel Geraerts welcomed his side back for their first training session ahead of the next campaign on Wednesday. Afterwards, S04’s head coach spoke about his squad, his aims for the season and questions around the captaincy.
FC Schalke 04 kicked off preparations for the 2024/2025 season in the Gelsenkirchen sun on Wednesday morning (26/6).

Jewish students spearheaded a 24-hour donor-sponsored service project
(New York Jewish Week) — Like so many Jews across the country
Ruthie Yudelson was celebrating Shabbat and the holiday of Shemini Atzeret when the news began to trickle in about terrorist attacks in Israel on Oct
was with her peers at New York University’s Bronfman Center for Jewish Life
people were trying to piece together what little bits of information they could from friends and family in Israel
Yudelson had organized a group of students to say Tehillim
which Jews recite on behalf of the sick and in times of danger
“I expected it to be some five or six people,” Yudelson said
which disseminated some $22 million in grants to Israeli nonprofits as of Monday
raised $22,000 from donors Yudelson described as a mix of “friends
local businesses and nonprofit philanthropies.”
“We see in the students’ eyes a ton of anger
Nobody’s able to sleep or eat or go to class,” said sophomore Benji Meppen
“We wanted to capitalize on that and say let’s take that nervous energy and put it towards something good
Let’s be together and raise money while doing something meaningful.”
and it’s been really great to see,” Meppen said
I find every moment that I’m not doing something
I sit on my couch or sit on my bed and look at the news or I read WhatsApp that I don’t want to read
I become incredibly angry and sad just as everybody else is
It’s been great to stay in the building and do something meaningful.”
holds a variety of leadership positions within the Bronfman Center
an online publication at the school “dedicated to clearing up the conversation around Israel,” as well as in the school’s Orthodox and Conservative Jewish student groups
She also works as a service engagement intern at the center
organizing community service programs throughout the year
is on the student executive board of NYU Hillel and is the co-president of the Israel Journal
New Jersey native who also has Israeli citizenship — said that she immediately began to think about how the Bronfman Center could become a space where students can express feelings
gather information and come together in a particularly fraught time
“The first way that this uncertainty and fear was metabolized for me was communally,” she said
“I have a lot of cousins who are fighting in Gaza
people that I grew up with who are in a tank right now,” Meppen
We hope that this event will help relieve people of some of those feelings while still raising money for UJA.”
NYU has been one of a handful of campuses across the country that has drawn scrutiny in the wake of Hamas’ attack, largely after the president of the law school’s Student Bar Association wrote a letter in the school’s newsletter stating
that “Israel bears full responsibility for this tremendous loss of life.”
But Yudelson says the Bronfman Center fundraiser hasn’t yet faced the same kind of pushback
The wider NYU community has been supportive
Yudelson surmised that the reason for the lack of criticism is that the fundraiser is focused on humanitarian aid
or because it is not “the most political” as far campus actions go
although she did stress that “all the aid that we are collecting is going to Israel.” She also said she wasn’t sure how much the larger undergraduate campus population was aware that the fundraiser was happening
“It’s been wonderful to be a part of,” Yudelson said
“Right now it is a very weird time in our current cultural moment and it’s hard to be hopeful
For college students — who tend to have low bank account balances — “it’s hard to imagine ourselves as having any sort of effective or important piece in the larger geopolitical struggles happening right now,” she said
But that does not mean that they should not try
“As Jewish college students in New York City
we can choose to take an active role in this conflict and ensure the future Jewish people,” he said
“I’m very happy that we are currently doing that as we speak.”

The former Manchester City youth player and England Under-18 captain Courtney Meppen-Walter walked free from prison on Monday after serving just a quarter of his 16-month sentence
Greater Manchester police were informed by the Prison Service of the blunder and efforts were made to return the 18-year-old to custody
A police spokesman confirmed that the player was back behind bars on Tuesday morning
An investigation is under way into how he was mistakenly freed
The Prison Service said: "Releases in error are very rare and we take any incident extremely seriously
An investigation will take place into the circumstances that led to this release."
The widow of one of Meppen-Walter's victims said she was devastated to learn he had been allowed to walk free
and felt "badly let down" by the criminal justice system
The footballer was jailed on 28 February at Manchester crown court
where the sentencing judge said he would serve half his sentence in custody but could be released earlier on an electronic tag
was driving his grandfather's Mercedes at almost twice the 30mph speed limit when he hit a car at a junction in central Manchester
Meppen-Walter had been "jockeying" and "playing games" on a nearby dual carriageway with a friend in a VW Golf
The victims had arrived in the UK in 2001 to start a new life after fleeing persecution by the Taliban in Afghanistan
Meppen-Walter had one previous conviction for speeding
said on Monday: "The news of Meppen-Walter's release from prison has devastated me
His original sentence of 16 months for causing death by careless driving to both my husband and his sister was not sufficient in the first place
"He has now been released after serving just four months
I feel that I have been badly let down by the criminal justice system."
As well as being sentenced to 16 months concurrently on two charges of causing death by careless driving
Meppen-Walter was also banned from driving for three years
Courtney Meppen-Walter, 18, was arrested in September after his Mercedes was in collision with a Nissan Micra in Manchester
were sitting in the back of the car and were injured in the crash on the evening of 1 September on Great Ducie Street
Meppen-Walter admitted the charges at Manchester magistrates court on Thursday
He was told by magistrates his case was too serious for them to sentence him
and he will be sentenced by a judge at Manchester crown court on 28 February
Kellet conceded that Meppen-Walter stayed at the scene of the crash and described how witnesses said he was distressed and showed remorse
The collision happened at about 10.15pm at the junction between Great Ducie Street and Sherborne Street
said his client was an inexperienced driver and speeding was the main factor in the careless driving
He said it was a lapse of "a few seconds" but "the consequences are enormous"
He said Meppen-Walter pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and "accepted his responsibility for this incident"
Lewis asked for the defendant to be sentenced by the magistrates but they refused
said: "We do believe this is not suitable for the magistrates court
We consider your driving in this instance fell not far short of dangerous driving."
O'Keefe said the fact two people were injured as well as two people dying was an aggravating factor in the case
Meppen-Walter was given an interim driving ban
The court heard the player is also facing a further speeding allegation
He was stopped driving at 54mph in a 30mph area in Bury
Magistrates were told he had indicated he intends to admit this offence
Greater Manchester police said it would not comment on the case until after sentencing
None of the families of the victims was in court
The Bury-born defender has been at the Premier League club since 2003 and has represented England at under-17 level
We are delighted to announce the signing of Courtney Meppen-Walters following his loan spell with the club last season
To the delight of Guiseley fans centre-back Courtney Meppen-Walters has signed a new contract with the club
He became a huge fan favourite at Nethermoor last season after joining the club on loan from Radcliffe
The loan was initially for a month but after featuring in all five games in that time his temporary switch was extended to the end of the season
made such an impact that he was signed to join Jameel Ible in the Lions’ defence for the coming season
Those Guiseley fans were a key part in him signing a new contract with the club
He said: “They make you feel like a part of a family the support they give you
I have been messaged almost daily by some of them asking me to sign
The fans were amazing with me and gave us a boost when things weren’t going our way
They are definitely part of the reason why I decided to sign again for the club.”
He added: “I love having a chat with them after games and I love celebrating with them when I score
The gaffer Phillo (Paul Phillips) told me off for the way I celebrated after scoring from the penalty spot but after I had high-fived one it just continued as everyone had their hands out
“Some players see Phillo as being a bit harsh with them but he and Kayde just want to breed leaders and winners
You need to be up for the challenge and if you don’t understand that than perhaps you shouldn’t be playing
They only shout at you because they want you to do well
“I am happy that they have shown confidence in me by offering me another contract and I am happy to sign it as I have confidence in them to bring us success
I have really enjoyed my football with them and I feel that we can go on and do something next season,” he added
Born in Oldham and raised in Bury Meppen-Walters
came up through the Academy at Manchester City where his contemporaries included Raheem Sterling and Micah Richards ‘looked out for him’
He also remembers the first team squad including ‘a very nice’ James Milner who he described as ‘the ultimate professional’
who can also play as a defensive midfielder
He also represented England at Under- 17 and Under-18 levels
In 2013 he joined Carlisle United and played for them in Divisions One and Two making 42 appearances
On leaving Brunton Park in 2016 he signed for Ashton United and then Chorley
Meppen-Walters then moved on to Stockport County
and the following season played 50 games for Glossop North End in which time he netted 12 goals
He returned to Chorley in 2018 playing 76 games and scoring six goals for them before joining AFC Telford United in 2020
His stay lasted just seven games before he moved back north to sign for Radcliffe and then Guiseley
He quickly became a favourite at Guiseley with his cultured play in the back four and his threat in attacking situations

An ex-Manchester City youth team player who killed two people while speeding has been given a 22-month ban after he was caught drink-driving
told a court he was “embarrassed” after being found more than twice over the legal limit
He went drinking with friends at a Christmas market on 10 December and his car was later spotted on CCTV swerving in the road
who previously played for City’s youth side as well as the England Under-18 team
killed a brother and sister through careless driving
died after Meppen-Walter smashed into their Nissan Micra in a high-powered Mercedes saloon car having been “jockeying” and “playing games” with a friend in another vehicle
The footballer was jailed for 16 months the following year
the now part-time professional player and coach was back in court for the drink-driving offence committed in the early hours of 10 December
Meppen-Walter had met friends at the city’s Christmas markets and intended to have just one drink but consumed several
CCTV operators later alerted police when the defendant’s Kia Picanto was seen swerving in the road
The vehicle appeared to strike the kerb and was stalled at a red light in Great Bridgewater Street when a police officer approached
said the officer stated he had to remove Meppen-Walter from the car because he would not get out and then needed help from two passers-by as he restrained him
Ms Seth said the officer thought the defendant was drunk
Meppen-Walter was arrested and taken to a police station where he was found with 85mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath
The court was told that the father-of-one – who pleaded guilty last month – agreed with the evidence of the case but claimed he did not resist arrest as described
A pre-sentence probation report noted his drink-driving reflected “poor judgment” when considering his previous conviction and that “again he has failed to consider the consequences of his actions”
said: “The most significant mitigation in this case is his genuine remorse which has been reflected throughout
It was a mistake and it is the one and only drink mistake on his record.”
The court heard that alcohol had played no part in the killing of Mr Singh and Ms Kaur, who had come to the UK from Afghanistan in 2001 to start a new life after fleeing persecution by the Taliban.
Before passing sentence, chairwoman of the bench Margaret Hutchinson asked Meppen-Walter if he wanted to say anything about the current case.
He replied: “I know what you are probably thinking and what everyone else is thinking. I will probably get called every named under the sun and I deserve it. I’m just embarrassed.”
Mrs Hutchinson said: “We hope this will be a lesson to you and we will not see you in court again.
“Drink-driving is a very serious matter and the consequences could have been much graver than today.”
Meppen-Walter must serve a 12-month community order, complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay court costs totalling £170.
He indicated he wanted to take a drink-drive awareness course which would reduce his ban by 22 weeks.
Meppen-Walter, of Kirkstall Avenue, Heywood, was signed by Carlisle United after completing his custodial sentence and is currently playing for Chorley FC in the National League North.
Courtney Meppen-Walter, an 18-year-old defender who has captained England's under-18 team twice and been an unused substitute in Champions League matches, hit a car as it emerged from a side street in Manchester while he was driving at 56mph in a 30mph zone.
The victims, Kulwant Singh and Ravel Kaur, arrived in Britain from Afghanistan in 2001 after fleeing persecution by the Taliban.
Meppen-Walter cried as he was sentenced at Manchester crown court. He was also banned from driving for three years.
