APK was founded in 2008 to produce recycled plastics from complex plastic wastes using mechanical and solvent-based technologies
which is headquartered in Merseburg in the east of Germany
The recycled LDPE produced by APK is marketed under the brand name Mersalen
The recycler posted a loss of €29.5m in 2022 on annual turnover of €8.4m
the company had carried forward accumulated losses of €121m
LYB says it aims to increase the recycling of hard-to-recycle flexible plastic waste materials
which today make up the majority of mixed plastic waste from the consumer sector
APK's solvent-based technology separates the different polymers and produces recycled materials with a high degree of purity which are suitable for new flexible packaging for personal care products
The recycled materials produced are to be sold as part of the LYB Circulen portfolio

Urban context. The University of Applied Sciences in Merseburg has approximately 3,000 students. The campus is characterized by the typical postmodern prefabricated blocks of the 50s and 60s - some have already been renovated or demolished. A few buildings are still preserved in their original condition. Next to one of the dormitories is an annex with two levels. This former north-south-oriented telephone station is now repurposed as a new nursery school for the Association of Student Services.
It provides a place for up to 42 children at the age of 0-6 years. The facade layout with the new central main entrance allows parents and employees direct access. Large new windows in a wood-aluminum construction on the south and north facades translate the long building into a contemporary architectural language and ensure the natural lighting of the rooms. The conversion gives this building a new function and appearance.

Global system integrator Fluence and utility Münch Energie are developing a solar-plus-storage plant with 34MWh of storage in Merseburg
Fluence will assemble a 11.7MW/34MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the project using its Gridstack energy storage product
The solar PV will have a power of 34MW and the project is scheduled for completion in 2023
The two assets will share a grid connection and will be directly connected to the electricity grid via a specially built transformer station, enabling Münch Energie to participate in the secondary reserve market (aFRR), a relatively new ancillary service market in West Europe.
The project was one of the winners in May’s Innovation Tender issued by the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur)
Projects which pair solar PV with another renewable energy asset are eligible
and all or most winning projects are solar-plus-storage
and winning projects receive a fixed premium per kWh of energy dispatched into the grid
Mario Münch, founder and CEO of Münch Energie, indicated that his company and Fluence had more plans to bid for projects in the Tender: “To drive the further development of solar + storage projects in the country, Münch Energie and Fluence are planning more projects with triple-digit megawatt-hour capacity.”
By 2028, the market regulator plans to award contracts of up to 4GWh to the developers of distributed energy storage systems under the Innovation Tenders according to Fluence’s press release. This roughly matches up with Tricera’s estimate that around 400MWh of batteries would be tendered every half year in the coming years.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems says that Germany will need 84GWh of additional BESS capacity to achieve a renewable mix of 80% by 2030, on top of things like pumped hydro. It currently only has around 600MW of grid-scale (1MW-plus) BESS online, although considerably more residential and smaller commercial & industrial-located (C&I) capacity.
Services like aFRR will continue to be an important driver of revenues for grid-scale battery storage projects, but the overall grid ancillary services’ limited market size in Germany means wholesale energy trading is certain to grow in the value stack in the coming years.
the foundation stone for a cathedral was laid in Merseburg on the Saale
A jubilee exhibition is now showing precious treasures from the Middle Ages.Image: Wolfgang KubakThietmar von Merseburg or Julius Cäsar? The exhibition starts by debunking a legend: Merseburg was not founded by the Romans
it hosted the most important imperial palace in the east of the Holy Roman Empire
Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg laid the foundation for Merseburg Cathedral
Heinrich II was crowned Emperor in 1014 and immediately began expanding the existing Merseburg Church
the city of Merseburg is overshadowed by the nearby cities of Leipzig and Halle on the Saale
Merseburg had international connections with Scandinavia
130 valuable items from all over Europe are being shown in the special exhibition in the Cathedral and in the neighboring Merseburg Palace Museum
This magnificent liturgical robe from the 12th century is among the exhibits
There is a legend about the ruby- and pearl-encrusted Holy Mass Chalice from the 15th century: at the Last Judgment
Heinrich II’s good and evil deeds will be weighed
is said to have cast this chalice into the balance
A special highlight is the facsimile of the famous Merseburg magic spells
which are regarded as the oldest written documents of Germanic mythology
They were discovered in 1841 in the library of the Merseburg Cathedral chapter
Die HeThe Holy Lance is a copy of the imperial insignia carried by the Germanic rulers of the Holy Roman Empire
It was considered holy because it was supposed to contain a nail or at least shavings from the Holy Cross
It is said to have been used at Heinrich II’s coronation as a king in 1002
The Merseburg Cathedral has undergone many changes
the famous Ladegast organ was installed in the mid-19th century
It blocked the old angles of view that were familiar and taken for granted during the Reformation period
large-format canvases seem to open up the old views in the cathedral
the exhibition in Merseburg Cathedral is showing one of Germany’s most important cathedral structures
It gained worldwide renown when George Clooney shot the film “The Monument’s Men” in it in 2013

both in solo performances as a singer/harpist (the Beowulf epic) and in collaboration with the singers and players of his talented ensemble Sequentia
At Jordan Hall on Wednesday evening they reached back several centuries earlier than in the usual Boston Early Music Festival fare to bring us a riveting series of “Charms
Riddles and Elegies” on Anglo-Saxon and Germanic texts
and played a six-string lyre-shaped Anglo-Saxon harp reproduced in Germany
and also wielded a traditional deer-hide drum from Vancouver Island
Other performers were Norbert Rodenkirchen
who played a small bone flute by Boston’s own Friedrich von Huene in addition to a variety of wooden cross-flutes and a 16-string medieval harp
Bagby structured the concert in four segments designed to draw us
First came the so-called “Merseburg Charms,” the only known examples of Germanic pagan belief preserved in Old High German
Compelling incantations by the two women in shrill unison urged on the Valkyries and called for the healing of a wounded battle horse
Bagby posed an Anglo-Saxon riddle in two stanzas that described first the physical structure of a “creature” and then its power
Assuming the persona of a tribal singer using a pentatonic melody of restricted compass
Bagby cited tales of famous men who suffered before recounting his own loss of status as singer to the king
More charms in Old High German and Anglo-Saxon followed: to bless a house and to manage a swarm of bees
The second program segment opened with an instrumental piece based on one of the few surviving melodies from the northern islands
Magnus hymn from a manuscript of around 1230 from the Orkneys
The two Anglo-Saxon harps accompanied what sounded like an improvisatory flight by Rodenkirchen on a sonorous wooden flute
More riddles from Bagby alluded to a quill pen and the fingers that command it
Stef Conner eloquently assumed the role of an Anglo-Saxon wife waiting and longing for her absent warrior husband
Concluding incantations aimed to chase away a litany of invasions of the human body
Rodenkirchen opened the third program segment with a beautiful rendition of the ancient Icelandic folk tune “Lilja” on the flute
Bagby’s performance of the “Dying Old Man” elegy from the Beowulf epic was equally moving
while incantations against the spider-dwarf and “little tumors” were downright frightening
The instrumental piece that opened the fourth and final segment was “deconstructed” back in time by Rodenkirchen from a 10th-century sequence by the St
based on the supposition that a multi-stanza Christian sequence might have been based on a pre-Christian melody from oral tradition
Three Anglo-Saxon riddles described household objects — bread dough
a butter churn — to which obscene doubles entendres could easily be ascribed — but were left to our imaginations
Hanna Marti performed her own reconstruction of the Anglo-Saxon “Wulf and Eadwacer” elegy with its haunting refrain
“It is different with us.” The poem is preserved in a manuscript known as the Exeter Book
but several of the poems included in the book are much older
and some of them have been dated as far back as the 7th century
The story of Wulf and Eadwacer is enigmatic
According to the most widely credited interpretation
being held prisoner on an island by Eadwacer
while Wulf (her lover or husband) is in exile
perhaps being hunted by the speaker’s people
her defiant isolation in the face of danger became palpable
Marti and Conner joined forces with Bagby’s harp and Rodenkirchen’s flute to invoke charms against bleeding that freely mixed pagan magic and Christian imagery
Bagby recited an elaborate charm that invoked Wotan
and finally Christ to drive out nine poisons from the body
The evening closed with the “Mill Song of Frodi’s Slave Girls,” taken from a 13th-century prose Edda in Old Icelandic
King Frodi hires two slave girls to grind out wealth and prosperity for him with a magic millstone
But remembering that they are descended from powerful mountain giants
they instead grind out an army to destroy him
Marti and Conner were menacingly convincing in their vengeful anger
the second part of each stanza shifting to the shrill tessitura of the melody’s upper final
It seemed to this uninstructed listener that both imaginative re-composition and a good deal of conjecture were brought to bear in bringing these “Lost Songs” to life
These are musicians steeped in improvisatory traditions
they have mastered obscure languages and made them their own in performances that are riveting as well as convincing
We are grateful for the varied-repetition structure of the program
for the complete texts and translations provided by Anglo-Saxonist Craig Williamson
and for projection of the translations on Jordan Hall’s screen
Sequentia promises detailed information about sources and reconstructions for the program beginning in summer 2019

UConn social work students explore the continuing effects of the Holocaust in Germany
while students from Merseburg learn about the history of race and its legacy in the U.S
The human and social problems that social workers contend with every day often have their roots in the past: political upheavals that led to the marginalization of one group within the society
or a wave of immigration to a new social setting
A travel-study academic exchange program at the School of Social Work encourages UConn students to explore the Holocaust and its ongoing effects in Germany
while students from the University of Merseburg
learn about the history of race in the U.S
A vibrant dialogue spawned by the 10-day travel study program
offering differing perspectives of social work practice in the two countries
took place recently at UConn’s Greater Hartford campus
as social work students grappled with the complex moral issues that result from structural oppression
Following a week’s visit that included seminars; a day-long interactive discussion with a child refugee of the Holocaust; and a field trip to York
the women’s correctional facility in Niantic
to learn about social work practice in U.S
18 German students joined their UConn counterparts for a day-long conference called “Learning From Each Other.”
and multiple perspectives of previous and current social systems
in order to effect change,” said associate professor Lisa Werkmeister-Rozas
chair of the School of Social Work’s Human Oppression curriculum unit and coordinator of the exchange program
“The program gives students an opportunity to reflect comparatively about similar cases and patterns of conflict,” she said
“My students learn they can’t just take their models and say ‘this is what you have to do,’ because the systemic inequities their German peers struggle with are different
And this makes my students re-examine what they’re doing and question whether it’s right.”
UConn students reported on research they conducted in Germany
while their visitors discussed social work systems in their once ethnically homogenous country
which is now dealing with the legacy of that massive social and demographic transformation that has taken place since the end of World War II
Merseburg master’s student Marcel Pytka supervises a speech therapy program for 226 preschool children in Halle
a town in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt near Merseburg that was once part of socialist East Germany
which ended the Cold War division of the communist East and capitalist West
but has also generated waves of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Middle East
giving rise to new political and social tensions
More than 40 percent of the children he works with do not speak or write German
noting that Saxony-Anhalt has invested heavily in child-care facilities and employs many social workers in an effort to help integrate these children into German society
“We demonstrate that these speech support investments are worthwhile,” he said
stressing that fluency in German is a prerequisite to the ‘good health’ of society
“This preschool program will have important economic payoffs in terms of quality of later opportunities in life for these children
Going beyond the war-movie Nazi stereotypes that are familiar in the U.S.
is studying how present-day Germans – taught by law about Nazi horrors in school – manage feelings of complicity or responsibility for the Holocaust
who traveled to Germany earlier this year with the third group of UConn students participating in the exchange program
conducted interviews with German students and their parents
and sadness that so many lost their lives,” said Vallee
Many younger Germans who grew up after Germany’s reunification
have difficulty discussing the Holocaust with their parents: “These aren’t pleasant stories,” one person told her
A majority of the Germans she interviewed emphasized their ethical commitment to righting the injustice of the Holocaust
“We are all responsible as people to make sure it does not happen again.”
The exchange program was developed by Werkmeister-Rozas following a three-month teaching sabbatical at Hochschule (University) Merseburg
who was seeking ways to enhance his students’ international experience
Herwig-Lempp said that despite the Nazi legacy of racism and prejudice
Germany today has a “more generous social safety net than the United States.”
He added that many German social workers now work with immigrants from various foreign countries
and that in order to treat them with dignity and respect
it is necessary to understand their identity
as well as society’s attitude towards them
“helps them develop a foreigner’s perspective and insight into concepts of power
Werkmeister-Rozas said that in order to work effectively with clients
social workers must understand the social context
Investigating the Holocaust and its effect on people is a meaningful way to examine the past
and future social and cultural dynamic in Germany
it’s not as simple as the Nazis are bad and the Jews are victims,” she said
We examine factors that impacted a person’s response to the Holocaust – not to say what they did was right – but to understand the situation that led to their decision
and that someone else in that situation might have made a similar decision
“It’s really about all of us living life from the positions we find ourselves in and learning about the human condition,” she said
Imagine bailing out of a flying fortress at 20,000 feet
“I knew I was going to die,” described Gerald M
¯ Mission 7: Merseburg: Saw 11 of our group go down in flames
¯ Mission 14: Merseburg: Scared to death as usual
but pulled out just as we were ready to bail out
that flying fortress,” said Theodore “Ted” C
“But we just dreaded going to Merseburg
We knew it was heavily defended — I had never heard of it before the war
are to be recognized among 15 veterans as inductees into the 2019 Washington County Veterans Hall of Fame
“We’re excited to honor and give recognition this year,” stated Robert Fitzgerald
executive director of the Washington County Veteran Service Commission
the board of commissioners has inducted more veterans than the previous year and added civilians and businesses who honor and serve our veteran community
Pape and Stewart are to be awarded posthumously for their service
The Hall of Fame induction was launched in 2018 when local veteran service commissioners sought to recognize not only the war stories but also the accomplishments of this area’s citizen-servants
echoing the mindset of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus ceding military power at the close of crisis
“We couldn’t wait to get home,” said Bauer
you’re putting on your ‘civies’ instead of the khaki’s.”
and continue serving their communities through farming
“It’s always great to see not only our veterans honored for their service
but embraced and recognized by their families for that service in their home community as well,” said Fitzgerald
a two-theater conflict that drew in more than 30 countries’ young servicemen to fight
suffer and die on battlefields far from home
is still vivid in the minds of the two war veterans approaching their centennial horizons
Dye still questions how he made it to the ground of that French hillside
how he made it out alive after several months as a prisoner of war
“I was forced to march all the way across Germany,” he recalled
very cold winter to march some 500 miles.”
Bauer still recalls the fear of smoke billowing ahead
still respecting the marksmanship of German gunners on the ground aiming for his bomber and the surrounding planes in formation
but the Germans were trained too,” Bauer pointed out
And the two were humbled by the notice of county recognition for their service
“I don’t want to give a speech or anything
just say thank you and go sit down,” Bauer said quietly as he smiled sitting on his front porch in Marietta Thursday
“It’s quite an honor to be selected
I’m not sure what to do,” said Dye
“I didn’t ever much talk about it
I never had a reason to,” Dye continued
“It was just the last two or three years I started to talk
After kind of holding it in all those years.”
Bauer said he still tries to recall the names of the towns he was sent on missions to bombard
“Some of these places you’d never heard of before
and I haven’t heard of since,” he explained as he sat for the first time reading his mission notes typed
Those mission notes were included in the nomination submitted to the Washington County Veteran Service Commission for consideration of Bauer to the Hall of Fame
Stewart and Private First Class Pape include in the nominations from family members their humility in returning from war as well
“Frank (Pape) was a local farmer,” wrote nominator Kristen Haynes-Wickline
“Frank was involved in the infamous Battle of the Bulge
his unit was attacked by an artillery barrage by Germany.”
Pape was taken as a prisoner of war and survived the conditions of moldy biscuits
digging graves and repairing infrastructure until his release on May 14
Frank worked for 27 years as a rural mail carrier for the U.S
Postal Service in Marietta,” wrote Wickline
“(He) continued to farm for the rest of his life.”
submitted Stewart’s own notes from the war as part of the application
“I had three attacks of malaria and two bouts with Diptheria,” he explained
“My best friend and I were sent to a farm workgroup at Mossin
Lost in his writings are any glamour associated with the war effort
we were picking up potatoes to haul into the shed for sorting
I helped my friend finish his row after being forbidden to do so,” he continued

Merseburg site certified to treat waste from plastic films
the renowned recyclability certifier ARGE cyclos / HTP audited APK’s recycling facility in Merseburg for conformance with the EuCertPlast certification scheme
The audit focussed on the suitability of APK’s plants for the recycling of post-consumer waste from plastic films as well as of waste from PE/PA multilayer film production
All test requirements were successfully fulfilled and in July 2021 ARGE cyclos / HTP awarded APK the official EuCertPlast certificate
“This certificate is extremely important to us
as we see a growing number of brand owners and plastic converters across Europe requesting EuCertPlast as certification standard”
Director of Business Development at APK AG
“The certificate provides third-party-verified proof to our customers that we are able to valorise post-consumer plastics in our plant and that we do so with respect for the environment.”
can easily separate the different polymers found in multilayer plastic packaging – deemed non-recyclable until now – and transform the target polymer into re-granulates with close to virgin properties
Dissolution recycling is an advanced physical recycling technology
during which the target polymer is dissolved
The “Newcycling” technology can treat waste from PE/PA multilayer film production as well as post-consumer plastic film waste from household collection
EuCertPlast is a Europe-wide harmonised certification scheme based on the European Standard EN 15343:2007: “Plastics
Plastics recycling traceability and assessment of conformity and recycled content”
It addresses the issues of the varying standards of plastics recycling across EU countries as well as a lack of transparency and traceability
EuCertPlast focuses on the traceability of plastic materials across the entire recycling process and supply chain
Its founding members include the European Association of Plastics Recycling (EPRO)
and Recovinyl – an initiative of the European PVC industry
EuCertPlast is recognised by a number of compliance schemes and product labels
including Germany’s Blue Angel and Italy’s Corepla
