Werner Freund has two lives: one among people and one among wolves
The 79-year-old established a wolf sanctuary in the German province of Saarland in 1972 and since then has raised more than 70 animals there
He interacts with the wolves as the Alpha male of the pack: howling with them
and letting them lick his mouth – a sign of membership of the pack
Wolf researcher Werner Freund lies on the ground next to Mongolian wolves as they devour a deer cadaver in an enclosure at Wolfspark Werner Freund

The animals there were acquired as cubs from zoos or animal parks and were mostly hand-reared
Freund howls too while sitting in the Arctic wolf enclosure

The park is currently home to 29 wolves forming six packs from European

A bloodied deer carcass hangs at the sanctuary
Freund stands by two hanging deer cadavers
“You can join me and pick up the deer cadaver,” German wolf researcher Werner Freund offered
I quickly jumped in and the smell of rotten meat hit me
I thought I would stop smelling it after a while
but this proved to be a very false assumption
We chatted while driving and he told me about his education as a gardener and his first botanical job at the Stuttgart zoo
Soon he became zookeeper for the predators
At the end of our drive we reached a house
and since he is almost 80 years old it seemed only polite to help him load the animal’s body
On the way back I told him I had never loaded or even touched a dead deer
Back at his home he changed clothes so he could meet the Mongolian wolf pack with a familiar smell
Werner opened the door of the fence and entered the enclosure
came towards him and licked his mouth - a sign of acknowledgment and membership of the pack
After this ritual Werner got the deer cadaver
lay down and held it as if it were his prey
I was told the tale of Little Red Riding Hood
and that made me wary of the big bad wolf with bared teeth on display
But unexpectedly the pack was shy and approached carefully
Werner played his role and bit into the leg of the deer but spat out the raw meat
I was too busy trying to shoot pictures through the wire-netting fence to wonder what was going on in front of me
None of the wolves competed with him for the food
In the afternoon I met Werner at the enclosure of the Arctic wolves
It was terrific watching the beautiful white animals howling in anticipation
They recognised the sound of Werner’s car and were excited long before he arrived at the gate
“From the moment the wolf cubs taste meat and blood
they turn into predators and cannot be domesticated like dogs”
entering the enclosure with a bucket of meat
named after the horse whisperer Monty Roberts
and the female wolf Deborah had a litter of cubs
Werner began feeding the litter from his mouth
It was incredible that the whole pack adopted this behaviour
Werner proceeded to a small hill where the pack assembled
“I had to re-educate my voice as my German dialect sounds quite hard
The light was just perfect and the wolves roamed around while he always stayed in the middle
They stopped sometimes to join in the wolf song and their breath became visible in the cold air
Werner said with a canny smile later as we sat at a table in his living room having a cup of tea together
joined in and mentioned how quickly their 50-year marriage had passed by
Back in 1972 they adopted a wolf named Ivan from Yugoslavia
Ivan was released into an enclosure and mated with a female wolf who gave birth to cubs soon after
When they visited the wolf family they had a life-changing experience
“Ivan brought one of the cubs to us and laid it down”
Apparently this was the moment when he decided to dedicate his life to the wolves
I listened to his stories about the animals
and I noticed that he used terms like muzzle and claw for his own body parts
Werner Freund has an eventful life to look back on
he answers that he has two lives: “Which one I like best

We had no idea then just how slender a needle’s eye we were threading when we set off as a family to explore Syria over a long (American) Presidents Day weekend in 2011
Traveling with our 4- and 2-year-old daughters
secured visas and headed north from our apartment on the western edge of Amman
The Arab Spring was still in its heady early days
Egypt’s youth had electrified the region a month earlier by toppling a dictator
but couldn’t have anticipated just how hard and with what hell-fury the window that had been cracked open would be slammed down upon a people and a place
Our happy memories of this trip now seem strange and incongruous alongside accounts of the civil uprisings and the regime’s brutal retaliation in places like Daraa
Damascus and Bosra—not to mention the growth of ISIS and ensuing brutality throughout major parts of the country
we read Little House in the Big Woods aloud in the car
we piled out of the car for passport control
The guards laboriously scrutinized our passports for signs of travel missteps into enemy territory
attempted to speed up the process with polite chitchat while I continued to read Little House aloud in the parked car
with passports in hand and Hannah in his arms
seeing her energetic blonde pigtails and enormous brown eyes once more helped the guards regain their perspective
and they gave up looking for signs of enmity
our memories are in a kind of interpretive ruin
Listening to a Dora the Explorer “World Friendship” CD
children who had scribbled anti-regime graffiti on a wall would be dragged away to torture chambers
but just as I lifted the hatchback to retrieve the plastic potty
Dora’s unmistakable voice belted out: “Shalom
From Israel!” Hardly the tones of a delicate dance
We ventured on to the still-inhabited Roman ruins at Bosra—taking in its basalt amphitheatre
climbing up to a perch to gaze down on the stage
where in March 2015 rebel forces would battle with regime troops
we stopped to let our girls play amidst the grassy
time-softened remains of a basalt Byzantine cathedral
They played “house” and “farm” around the toppled structures
David and I sat on upturned column segments watching them
happy that we had ventured here and not to a cloistered tourist resort for the holiday
Later we headed into the mountains north of Damascus
to Ma’loula—one of the few towns where Aramaic (the language of Jesus) is still spoken
modest café to escape a torrential afternoon rain and had a satisfying meal just below the cliffs where the Orthodox monastery of St
we hiked through a famous crack in the rock
The apocryphal story tells of a rock that opened to allow an elderly St
to flee her persecutors after having faced torture and death sentences many times over in her life
the al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front would wage battle with the Syrian army here
tastes and faces of the ancient streets left lasting impressions
We purchased a set of glass-paneled copper lanterns from a shopkeeper who
gave our daughters little fabric-framed mirrors for their purses
He had the lanterns wound tightly in bubble-wrap for our trip back to Amman
assuring us that if any of the panels broke
The lanterns have by now even survived a transoceanic voyage
even in the shadow of its ruthless dictator and his apparatus of fear
Yet Bosra’s basalt structures have been pocked by bullets
but that pales before the abject suffering and displacement endured by the Syrian people
How many times have I thought of Thecla’s rock and said a prayer for miraculous safe passages for the countless refugees who have suffered unrelentingly in the years since
The diplomatic life comes with enormous privilege—which
is twined with a responsibility to venture far beyond the safety of Disney-like surreality; to take real and complicated places into one’s own life
encounter cultures and make memories in places that many will never see
While some among the American public harbor fear about the unknown and the “other,” we think back to the faces we saw—including little ones with bright pigtails and brown
just like our Hannah; eyes that should have been compelling enough for a taste of liberty
as our daughters played farm in the gentle ruins of Bosra
Her writing has been published in Books & Culture
the Review of Faith & International Affairs and elsewhere
She and her family are currently posted to Berlin

In this installment of the articles highlighting the attractions found near Germany’s rivers
we accompany you on a drive along the Saar
an area rich in pleasing vistas and fascinating industrial history
A profile of the Saar: The Saar rises in the Vosges mountain range in northeast France and flows north for 152 miles before emptying into the Moselle River by the German town of Konz
Although it flows just slightly more through French territory than across German soil
for most of our journey we will be concentrating on the German sights
Some of the larger towns the Saar passes by include Sarreguemines in France; Saarbrücken
Saarlouis and Merzig in Saarland; and Saarburg in the Rhineland-Palatinate
with “sara” being a phrase for streaming water
is just an hour’s drive from Ramstein Air Base
Jacuzzis and pools of warm water is your thing
you’ll no doubt enjoy a few blissful hours at the Saarland Therme near Kleinbittersdorf
Architectural flourishes give it a look similar to that of Moroccan styles
a fine backdrop for experiencing its special events organized on Saturdays in July and August
Völklingen: Eight miles west of town we come to the town of Völklingen
where in decades past the iron and steel needed to build up an industrial society were produced by thousands of workers
When the Völklinger Hütte ironworks shuttered in 1986
its gigantic machinery and massive sheds were left standing
and today the compound is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fascinating spot to explore
The complex also houses the ScienceCenter Ferrodrom
where more than 100 interactive displays amuse and educate
special events and exhibitions are staged here year-round
Saarlouis: Perhaps you’re starting to wear down
Read all about how the Café Plaisir delivered java bliss to a Stripes reporter
Merzig: Merzig is famous for a product that’s not so typical to Germany: cider
the town hosts a festival in honor of its beloved drink on the first Saturday of October each year
Mettlach: Villeroy & Boch is a respected name in the world of porcelain
and they are headquartered in this rather old-fashioned looking town
figurines and other intricately designed items at the Villeroy & Boch Outlet Shop
The Keravision and Tableware World of Discovery is a display of many of the beautiful objects produced over the company’s 250-year history
The highlight of a visit to this complex is the historic dairy
a beautiful room covered from floor to ceiling with 15,000 handcrafted tiles
Saarburg: The treasure of this medieval town just 12 miles north of Mettlach is the remains of the castle guarding the town from its high perch
First mentioned in a document dating back to 964 A.D.
it’s one of the oldest hilltop castles in all southwest Germany
A unique feature of lovely Saarburg is the waterfall smack-dab in its center
which plunges down a 65-foot drop into a stone gorge
A mill and a trio of still-turning waterwheels complete the idyllic scene
but you’ve likely got something to show for your busy day
dishes or a Christmas ornament are all great keepsakes; a camera full of images of scenic vistas and smiling faces even better

Sandra Nuxoll's 2020 Louisdor Cup finalist Hanami has been sold to German aspiring Under 25 rider Louisa Deutschbauer
Hanami is an 11-year old Oldenburg mare by Dante Weltino out of Hamiera (by His Highness x Ramires x Priamos xx)
The mare made her show debut as a 5-year old in 2016 under Anja Teute
who runs a boutique training and sales yard in Germany
The new duo made its debut at local shows in Germany in 2017
In 2018 Nuxoll moved the 7-year old black mare up to Prix St Georges level and rode the German selection trial for the World Young Horse Championships but was not selected
They also contested the Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifiers that year
In 2019 Hanami moved to developing Grand Prix level and in 2020 she matured into a highly promising Grand Prix horse, qualifying for the 2020 Louisdor Cup Finals in Frankfurt
which Nuxoll ended up winning with her other Grand Prix horse Bonheur de la Vie
In 2021 the pair made its international show debut at the CDI Herzlake
where they were 7th in the Grand Prix with 69.674% and 10th in the Special with 67.830%
Their last show together was in Ankum at the beginning of November 2021 where they were back at 72.5% in this national Grand Prix
In November Hanami sold to German national dressage rider Louisa Deutschbauer
The 20-year old is based in Merzig-Wadern
where her family owns and runs equestrian centre Ballern
Nuxoll and Hanami in 2018Louisa has been competing up to Young Riders/S-level with the now 16-year old Rubin Noir (by Rascalino x Sugunas xx)
which they bought in the winter of 2018-2019 at Helen Langehanenberg's where Sabrina Gessmann was training and competing the horse for owner Jens Bartling
and with the 11-year old Der Wademärker (by Dancier x Weltmeyer)
previously shown by Esther Maruhn up until 2019
She has also been campaigning the 7-year old Flavour (by Floriscount x Sandro Hit) at A-level
Deutschbauer made her international show debut in June 2021 at the CDI-PJYR Kronberg
where she rode Rubin Noir to a 6th and double 9th place in the Young Riders division
Deutschbauer now has a ready Grand Prix horse for her to make the transition from Young Riders to Under 25 Grand Prix level in the future
Next month Germany will be hosting the selection trials for the Piaff Forderpreis show circuit in Warendorf
Nuxoll can be proud of her achievement as a trainer as this is the third horse she has been able to produce from young horse level to Grand Prix and sell for a rumoured six figure amount
Before Hanami she sold Grand Prix horses Stand by Me (Lisa Müller) and Destiny (Kristina Sprehe)
Nuxoll has not (yet) sold her Louisdor cup winner Bonheur de la Vie and is now also focusing on her new rising hopes Found a Hit (by Foundation x Sandro Hit) and brand new acquisition Nabola (by Intro K x Rhodium)
"Louisa and beautiful Hanami are a great match," Nuxoll told Eurodressage
"Nabola will be only 4 years old this year
but shows great potential and she was exactly my type of horse with a good engine and activity from behind and a top character
My intention is for sure to develop her to FEI leve

The Sinogene Biotechnology Company in Beijing announced the birth of the world's first cloned Arctic wolf at a press conference in Beijing Wildlife Park on September 19. The wolf
was born on June 10 in a laboratory. "Cloning technology provides a good entry point for the protection of endangered wild animals
which has a great contribution to the protection of biodiversity."
although climate change has caused a decline in the overall Arctic wolf population as a result of a decline in the population of their various prey
according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The WWF also points out that Arctic wolves rarely come into contact with humans and are not threatened by hunting; rather
they are more susceptible to habitat disruption as mines
roads and pipelines enter their territory and cut into their food supply. The Environment and Climate Change portal is produced in cooperation with the Goldman Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

ONEONTA – Accusing 195 Main Street owners Melania and Nicolae Pervu of “gross negligence” and warning that they are “approaching criminal behavior,” the City of Oneonta will ask County Judge John Lambert to shut down the former Oneonta Hotel during a hearing on Tuesday
“The situation has now passed far beyond dirty rugs and stained ceiling tiles from a leaking roof,” wrote David Merzig
“The Respondents are now demonstrating gross negligence and
actually approaching criminal behavior and must be stopped immediately.”
two “serious and life-threatening incidents” related to 195 Main St
On Friday, Jan. 25, carbon monoxide detectors in 189 Main St. went off
forcing the Oneonta Fire Department to evacuate the building
code enforcement officer John Hester and two NYSEG employees discovered that the top of the boiler in the basement of 195 Main St
had been removed and that tape had been placed over an air inlet to allow the boiler to continue burning
NYSEG “red-tagged” the boiler and warned the Pervus not to relight it
On Monday, Jan. 28, 189 Main St. was once again evacuated for carbon monoxide, with two people transported by ambulance to Fox Hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning. NYSEG discovered that the boiler had been reignited and cut a section of the piping that connected with the boiler
along with my co-workers,” 189 Main St
employee Tysha Hoose wrote in a statement to the City
” I don’t know when you are going to actually condemn
People’s health and lives are at stake.”
Hoose was sent to the ER with carbon monoxide poisoning on both Friday and Monday
“This Court has given the Respondents every opportunity to correct the health and safety violations at this property as well as the structural deficiencies,” wrote Merzig
These latest incidents merely confirm what the City has been repeating over and over
that the issues at this property are not simply cosmetic
Fatalities could have very easily occurred here.”
the City asks that the Pervus “…immediately vacate all remaining residents of the apartments located on the premises” and note that should they fail to do so
for the Court to allow the city to enforce the order “by means and in such manner as may be ordered by this court.”
the City requested $25,000 in reimbursements for such actions and to pay all costs for all court proceedings
Crescentia of Lucania's feast day is celebrated on May 16 in the Eastern Orthodox Church
the stories told of the three are slippery
But the story goes that Crescentia worked as a nanny in a Roman senator’s house
Crescentia and Modestus apparently played a key role in Vitus’s conversion to Jesus
learned that his son had become a Christ-worshiper
he took severe measures in hope he would recant
Modestus and Crescentia spirited him away to a river’s edge where they escaped on a boat (escorted by an accompanying angel)
young Vitus engaged in a lively ministry of healing and evangelism
even performed an exorcism for the emperor’s son
All three may have been tortured to death at this point because the emperor did not approve of Vitus’s spiritual meddling in his own household
Some accounts say that they weren’t quite tortured to death but
were carried by (another) angel to Lucania
In another account the emperor only locks up and tortures Vitus and Modestus
Crescentia publicly confronts the emperor for his cruelty against them and confesses Christ as well
An earthquake may (or may not) have happened at this point
and struck fear into Diocletian’s heart
the broad brush strokes paint a familiar picture
Having lived in cultures where conversion to Christianity is illegal and where household staff may have far more personal interaction with the young of elite parents
it’s easy for me to imagine real faces to these historically obscured lives
conversion to Christ ushers in private persecutions and public earthquakes that threaten political structures and family honor
liberal West can barely comprehend the real threat and profound shame that Vitus’s faith represented to the Roman political and civic order and the household of one its senators
The help that Crescentia and Modestus offered to Vitus was treasonous both to household and to empire
These three represented an earthquake that threatened to bring the neat order of life crashing down
In their story the family cult is laid bare for what it is
truer family forms in their flight for safety
The trio forms a holy image of how God uses the weak of the world — including the lowly
very often utterly hidden household help — to shame the wise
It’s also not surprising that Crescentia’s story has a gossamer
It’s so familiar that it very well may have happened a thousand times over in history
in ten thousand places: a youngster quietly learning the good news from his nanny
who tenderly cares for and instructs him or her
and Vitus’s path reminds us that Christ will have his Church
Crescentia’s story may have been passed among the rest of the staff
told beneath billowing laundry lines under the Mediterranean sun or whispered while window-washing
making its way beyond the villa’s walls and out onto high roads and byways
She emerged from the crowd to confront the emperor!”
But these days we’re not apt to lend it much credence because
Crescentia was only part of “the help.” We still tend to think that they mess with the facts
They’re not usually the ones writing history

GLENS FALLS — The advice to the Queensbury High School Class of 2019 was about building relationships and serving others
Superintendent of Schools Douglas Huntley shared a story about a recent biking trip where he experienced a flat tire
A man named Kevin who accompanied him on the ride
gave him his spare tire and put it on his bike
Kevin said a similar incident happened to him and a good Samaritan gave him a spare
Huntley encouraged others to pay it forward
“You have not lived a day until you have done something for someone who can never pay you back,” he said to the 258 graduates in a ceremony on Friday at Cool Insuring Arena
Helping others was also the theme in the speech by former math teacher Stephanie Knoop
who moved to the Syracuse area after the students’ junior year
but was invited back to address the graduates
but she encouraged the students to be kind
“I think one of the most important things we can do with our lives is to serve others
I’m filled with gratitude when I serve others,” she said
Class of 2019 President Tiffany Hotte announced that the class gift is a new water fountain
as part of the district’s Legacy 2020 capital project
Principal Damian Switzer thanked the students for being flexible and putting up with the high school in various states of construction
The flexibility they exhibited will help them in their life
Switzer cited some examples of famous people
such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and singer-songwriter John Legend
who have cited a teacher who helped give them the confidence to pursue their goals
you could be that one person who makes a difference,” he said
Student speaker Erik Swanson encouraged the students to keep challenging traditional assumptions
“The moment you think you have it all figured out is the moment that everything is rearranged and you have to figure it out again,” he said
Student speaker Julia Merzig said that June 28 represents the closing of these students’ academic journey
This class created memories that will last a lifetime and it is now time to begin a new chapter
Students were eager to begin that next chapter and have big goals
Delaney Camp plans to study environmental science at Cazenovia College
“I’m going to try to bio-engineer a new organism to get rid of plastic,” she said
Kim Bacon was going to serve others by getting a nursing degree
She said a lot of her family is in the profession
She said she was motivated to get through high school so “I can have the future I want.”
Parents were also eager to show their support
Jolene Schaffer and some friends had cardboard cutouts of her daughter
“I wanted her to be able to be able to find me afterward,” Schaffer said
Schaffer said she felt overwhelmed but is excited that her daughter is graduating
Lucas Crane’s advice to freshmen coming up is to “cherish the memories.”

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – The first complaint ever filed with the Town of Richfield Ethics Committee was dismissed this evening after the three members agreed there was insufficient content in the record for them to make a determination
“Can I refile?” asked Mike Reid
the town Planning Board member who raised so-far-unspecified allegations against Town Supervisor Nick Palevsky and freshman Town Board member Ed Bello Jr
who lost his seat on the town board last November
Page one of the “Ethics Complaint Form” filed with Town Clerk Maggie Young on Jan
has a notation in the upper right-hand corner: “page 1 of 2.”
the complaint the Ethics Committee – Kane Seamon
Judy Stone and Ronda Morrison – reviewed tonight had no page 2
“It could have been just the way it came out of the printer,” said Seamon
One exhibit was attached: Town Board Resolution #1 of 2020, which authorized the town to pay former town attorney David Merzig $750 to review a disputed petition that, if found valid, would overturn the former town board’s vote last Sept. 30 approving a restrictive zoning code
a majority that opposed the new code – Palevsky
and Fred Eckler – was elected and Merzig’s review
which concluded the code could not withstand a court challenge
would have been involved in developing the zoning code now under challenge
whatever point Reid intended to make was unclear tonight
“There’s nothing in these pages that tells me what the charges are,” said Randy Seamon
“It is a bunch of people getting together trying to make us look bad.”
He pointed out that Dan Sullivan’s email is at the top of Page One of Reid’s complaint
“I want to now who’s ganging up on me,” said Bello
Seamon considered holding the complaint over to the next meeting
but Palevsky said he and Bello “are both under a cloud” as long as the matter is unresolved
When the Ethics Committee voted 3-0 to dismissed the charge – “thank you
board members,” said Palevsky – Reid said he would refile what would be a complete complaint with the town clerk
I am open to consider the information that was displaced in our packet of complaint and rules
I hope the following meeting isn’t quite so volatile and possible have law enforcement protection available
Members of the audience were peaked in their passions

Former paratrooper Werner Freund is quite literally the leader of the pack – the wolf pack
The German researcher is top dog for six packs of wolves at his Wolfspark Werner Freund animal sanctuary in Merzig
which is spread over 25 acres and is currently home to 29 canines
Together they have hand-raised more than 70 animals in the past 40 years
The cubs are usually rescued from zoos or animal parks
the 79-year-old must act like alpha male – which means he gets first bite of fresh dead meat he feeds them
His bravery – and strong stomach – are paid off as the pack show him respect and even playfully lick his mouth clean afterwards

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation
has strongly refuted claims made by associates of Senator Tanko Al-Makura that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s administration and ruled out defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Malami emphasized that only loyalists of the CPC political ideology
founded under former President Muhammadu Buhari
have the legitimacy to speak on the bloc’s current position
Is it individuals like Senator Tanko Al-Makura
and Farouk Adamu Aliyu — the same people who have
thrown Buhari under the bus in their desperate quest for political relevance?” Doka questioned
He asserted that any pronouncement by the group is purely personal and self-serving
bearing no official connection to the CPC bloc
“Their statement is not reflective of the CPC base; it is a strategic attempt to remain politically relevant within a party structure that they never genuinely owned,” he added
Addressing the rumours of Malami’s alleged defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
Doka described such claims as “figments of imagination”
insisting that Malami remains a member of the APC
Malami is a notable political figure in Nigeria and would not defect secretly
although he is in ongoing consultations across several political platforms,” Doka clarified
He stated that until consultations are concluded
any talk of defection or political declaration is premature
He retains every constitutional right to associate with any political party or to contest for any position in Kebbi State or nationally,” the statement concluded
