Doughnuts with a receipt made of fondant were on display last week at a bakery in Moosinning
These Kassenbon Krapfen — receipt doughnuts — are a reaction to Germany's new receipt law
A new law has taken effect in Germany that requires receipts to be issued at businesses such as restaurants
It's known as Kassengesetz
or "cash register law": a law for protection against the manipulation of digital records
The measure is meant to increase transparency and prevent tax fraud
The idea is to log each transaction in a format that can be reviewed and verified
Many of these businesses — and their customers — have taken umbrage at the new requirement
but none has done so more deliciously than the country's beloved bakeries
some bakeries are incorporating the receipts into the goods themselves
The Bäckerei Ways in Moosinning has begun peddling Kassenbon Krapfen — receipt doughnuts
The pastries are slathered with pink icing and then topped with a receipt made of fondant
encourages customers to drop their receipts in the window last month
a symbol of the bakery's opposition to the law
The Streicher bakery in Grosshabersdorf had the same idea. "Edible and not hazardous waste," baker Roland Streicher told inFranken.de
Despite its verisimilitude, the sugary doppelgänger doesn't count: A regular receipt still has to be generated
Some bakeries have begun collecting the receipts from customers in a growing pile in the shop window
a visible reminder of displeasure with the new policy
At the Gasthaus Gutenberg restaurant in Karlsruhe
the proprietors took that idea a step further
stringing receipts in a garland crisscrossing the room
There is in fact no requirement to issue paper receipts in particular. Businesses can issue receipts by email or cellphone. But Germany is still a notoriously cash-based society
Companies also aren't required to use an electronic recording system (in which case they are not obligated to issue a receipt)
but they still need to keep complete and orderly records
Bakers demonstrated against the receipt law in Hanover in November
seeing it as a symbol of increased bureaucratization
Many critics of the law point to the huge amounts of waste generated by issuing all those receipts. Receipts are often made of thermal paper coated in chemicals that shouldn't be recycled
A German trade association estimated that all those compulsory receipts will generate enough paper each year to wrap around the world 50 times
So the controversial law could be good for other enterprises, like the small company Ökobon: It makes organic receipt paper

Viktor Hovland continues to put Norway golf on the map
The 23-year-old made history on Sunday as the first Norwegian player to win on the European Tour with his two-shot victory at the 2021 BMW International Open at 19 under
The Oklahoma State product held off two-time major champion Martin Kaymer to earn his first win on the European Tour in just his second start
Hovland now has three wins since turning professional in 2019 after claiming the Puerto Rico Open and Mayakoba Golf Classic last year
“I grew up watching mostly the European Tour,” Hovland said after his round
“There’s a lot of guys who played this week who I grew up watching
It’s cool to be a champion of this tour
in a place that… it’s not in Norway
but it’s close and has some of the same feelings of being home
It’s a huge honor and finally Norway has a win on the European Tour.”
Hovland shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to fend off Kaymer
who fired a 8-under 64 to finish second at 17 under
followed by Victor Dubuisson at 14 under and seven players T-5 at 13 under: Darren Fichardt
Golf is known to offer pleasant strolls and a serene pace of play
but that’s far from the case if you are trying to beat the official golf world record for the fastest hole
That record stood at 1 minute 33.37 seconds
and beating it really isn’t as easy as it sounds – as European Tour stars Sean Crocker
Paul Dunne and Guido Migliozzi recently found out
which was adjudicated by an official from the Guinness World Records
took place at the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina
Each player had to play a minimum of 500 yards and had to finish the hole carrying the same amount of clubs they started with
until the players realised that it involves 500 yards of running
after Dunne’s record-breaking time was disqualified before
“It was so tough but it was a lot of fun,” Detry said
“As a boy I used to get the Guinness World Records book for Christmas and I guess my name will be going in it now which is very cool!”
