the chief economist for Bloomberg Economics
who has written extensively about trade and China
but stock markets were still optimistic because they thought
that Trump is watching the financial-market news
He’s not going to do anything that has too big a negative impact on corporate earnings
April 2 shook that confidence and the idea of a Trump put
taking the reciprocal tariffs off some countries
flagging a willingness to negotiate with China — they’ve partially restored confidence in that
and I think this is probably in the end more important
is that this has been a seismic shock to the global trade system
When Trump came into power for his second term
That’s the highest level in more than 100 years
I just don’t think the markets actually know how to price something like that in
They’ve been off on this a few times lately — it’s not like they have accurately predicted what’s going to happen in the last few months in the first place.I think there’s been a striking pivot
If you spoke to people on Wall Street after the election
if you spoke to the Davos set earlier this year — I wouldn’t say there was ebullience
but there a kind of confidence that they knew who this guy was and there was going to be a lot of talk about tariffs
but actually the substance of the presidency was going to be tax cuts and regulation cuts
It was going to be like his first term until COVID struck — good for the markets
And I think what we’ve seen in the last few weeks is a daunting realization that actually a lot of the things he said on the campaign trail
they weren’t just red meat for the Republican base; they were actually policies that he’s now going to try and implement
And yet there have been some signs of deals on the horizon
in a way because he’s not quite going full bore — he’s also stepping off the gas a little bit at times
it’s not like he’s doing everything unilaterally
He is listening to the markets a little bit.I think you put your finger on it
much more market volatility than anyone anticipated
clearly the Trump put hasn’t disappeared entirely
There is some sensitivity to what happens with the market
sensitivity to what happens especially with Treasury borrowing costs
a willingness to get on the phone and speak with chief executives and other heads of states
And I think what we’re grappling with and what the markets are grappling with is
You’ve written a lot about China and the Chinese economy. They seem to have signaled some openness to trade talks with the U.S. after pretty much ignoring Trump’s demands before. The conventional wisdom has been that China could wait all this out in a way the U.S
What do you make of these carefully choreographed moves by the Chinese government? The first thing is that
China has a problem with its exports to the U.S
now has a problem with its trade relations with everybody
because it has imposed tariffs on everybody at the same time
So the tariffs on China are a problem for China
and that’s created a big problem for itself
And I think that’s one of the reasons that we’re sensing this optimism from Beijing that they might have greater capacity to wait this out than the U.S
The second piece of it is that China’s leaders know very well that there are some really big
Think about Nvidia with its sales of semiconductors
Think even about some of the big retail companies
So I think there’s also an understanding on the Chinese side that effectively creating this embargo between the world’s two biggest economies — it’s going to create some blowback for the U.S.
some blowback for some big name companies and for the U.S
President Trump has a kind of freewheeling businessman’s approach to dealmaking and has demonstrated some wins from that approach to dealmaking
The Chinese very much do not have that approach
and they are especially allergic to putting their top leader
Xi Jinping in a position where he could be surprised or
And so I think the instinct in the White House is
and they’ll hash this out.” And the instinct on the Chinese side is
Let’s have extensive working-level discussions
Let’s get absolute clarity on what’s being agreed here
and then maybe we’ll do the Trump-Xi meeting
But we’re certainly not doing that to kick things off.” And I think that difference in negotiating styles is going to be an additional hurdle as we attempt to move past this impasse
And of course, China does not appreciate the U.S. attacking it, and saying all kinds of disrespectful things
That seems to be a condition — simply respect us a little bit — and the Trump administration can’t do it.I think that’s completely correct
China views itself as a peer competitor with the U.S.
China also has its own history to deal with
a kind of internal narrative about a century of humiliation — which came before the creation of the People’s Republic — and a desire to kind of stand tall and be treated with respect in the world
And obviously being insulted by anybody doesn’t help create a conducive atmosphere for negotiations
What level of damage has already been done
Not only the tangible damage — international shipments are already falling
and there’s going to be fallout from that in the coming months — but more the intangible damage to the U.S
that things go back to semi-normal in the next month
Trump deserves a lot of credit for identifying a real problem here
That trade deficit means jobs and opportunities for middle-class Americans are being shipped overseas
We’ve seen the devastation that that has brought to communities in states like Pennsylvania and Ohio
where factory towns have effectively been closed down
and China is America’s main geopolitical rival
And depending on your main geopolitical rival for crucial inputs
from semiconductors to the base ingredients for pharmaceuticals
I think there are some legitimate questions to be raised about whether that’s a good idea
So I think Trump has identified a real problem
The question is whether his approach to solving the problem — really high tariffs and nosebleed-inducing uncertainty — is the right approach
I have a hunch that the answer is “no.” Yeah
we’ve got tariffs at 145 percent between the U.S
Tariffs at that level effectively shut off U.S.-China trade
There’s not a lot you can profitably do between the two countries with tariffs at that level
So let’s imagine the tariffs go down to 60 percent
That also effectively shuts off U.S.-China trade
it’s just not profitable to trade with each other
And then to come back to another dimension of your question: If you introduce absolutely enormous uncertainty
if you demand concessions from your trade partners
it raises questions about whether other people can engage in good-faith negotiations with you
even if tariffs come back to their April 1 levels
Something is still broken because trust is broken
And I’m just thinking of all these companies
from huge conglomerates to small businesses who have to plan around all this
and then a month later might have to move it back
uncertainty is the thing businesses hate the most.On the Bloomberg Terminal
you can count the number of times particular words are mentioned in news stories
One of the things we’ve done in the last few weeks is create trade-policy uncertainty indexes
We’re basically just counting the times “trade” and “uncertainty” are mentioned in stories
And what we can see is that trade policy uncertainty has rocketed to a record high
really an extremely high level of uncertainty
I think you see some advantages to that uncertainty
You’re throwing your opponent off balance; you’re getting a better deal for the American people
And I think there’s some early signs that on the dealmaking side
which companies like Apple and Nvidia and TSMC and Hyundai have made to make big investments in the U.S
That’s the kind of the fruits or the positive consequence of this uncertainty
If you don’t know if you’re going to face zero tariffs next month or 25 percent tariffs or 50 percent tariffs or 100 percent tariffs
It’s really hard to decide if you’re going to hire
it’s really hard to decide if you’re going to invest
And when you have this kind of paralysis of indecision in C-suites

Scottie Scheffler ran away from the field at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
The CJ Cup Byron Nelson was a special tournament for Scottie Scheffler long before the South Korean lifestyle company became a sponsor.
Scheffler, a Dallas, Texas native, has been going to the Byron Nelson since he was a child. In 2003, a six-year-old Scheffler met the legendary Nelson while at the tournament. Eleven years later, Scheffler made his professional debut at the Byron Nelson while playing on a sponsor exemption as a 17-year-old. He finished in a tie for 22nd that week.
Eleven years later, the World No. 1 added to his CJ Cup Byron Nelson history by running away from the field to claim his 14th career PGA Tour win. Scheffler opened his hometown tournament with a blistering 61 and backed it up with a 63 to enter the weekend with a six-shot lead, the biggest 36-hole margin on the PGA Tour since Brooks Koepka led the 2019 PGA Championship by seven at the halfway point.
Scheffler increased his lead to eight after three rounds, and he coasted to victory on Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch, eventually winning by eight shots. Scheffler’s 72-hole total of 252 ties the PGA Tour record for lowest 72-hole score.
Scheffler’s continued run of immaculate play has left his playing competitors in awe, including his friend and former World No. 1 Jordan Spieth, who is trying to make up ground on Scheffler now that he’s fully healthy.
“What he’s doing is inspiring, what he’s been doing is inspiring given — I mean, it wasn’t that long ago I was definitely better than him, and now I’m definitely not right now,” Spieth said after shooting a 9-under 62 on Sunday to finish in fourth place. “I hate admitting that about anybody, but I just watched it those first two rounds, and like I’ve got to get better. It’s very inspiring.”

Retirement is the dream of every worker, but it can also be a source of dread and anxiety because the money needed to do so in comfort is out of reach for many Americans
According to a recent study by Northwestern Mutual
Americans felt they would need $1.26 million saved up in order to retire comfortably
The median net worth (meaning all of the assets and minus liabilities) of Americans between 65-74 years old is $410,000
according to the Federal Reserve Board's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances
And that’s including everything they own — a home
More than half of Americans surveyed (51 percent) told Northwestern Mutual that they think they are somewhat or very likely to outlive their savings
“I think whats important now — what happens every time we have a volatile market dip — is that people read the headlines and they get scared
The younger generation might see that and decide not to invest
“Look at this as an opportunity to buy stocks
Increase your contribution to your 401k or a Roth IRA
because I’ll tell you what — the billionaires are all buying while everyone else is selling.”
Americans should have the equivalent of your annual salary saved up
that number should be six times their income
and by 60 it should be approximately eight times their income
That breakdown tends to be the standard shared by many financial experts with some minor disparities
Ally Bank's breakdown for retirement saving is similar to what's presented by Fidelity; at 30
have the equivalent of your annual income in the bank
and at 60 you're recommended to have seven times your income saved up for retirement
and [be investing] as aggressively as we can,” Valega told The Independent
“It's never too early or too late to start investing
Both Fidelity and Ally advise that it's important to keep in mind that those benchmarks are guidelines
and that an individual's retirement goals and personal circumstances must be factored in
remember that most others aren’t either — 17 percent of Americans
have less than their annual income saved for retirement
how much Fidelity recommends you have saved if you want to retire at 67
Lifestyle is another important consideration
If a worker wants to spend their retirement traveling the world
lavishing their loved ones with substantial inheritances
those goals need to be accounted for in advance
“I'm in New England, and we used to advise people to retire with $2 million to have a comfortable retirement,” Valega said, who works with fairly wealthy clients. “Now I want my clients to have $3 and $4 million saved in their retirement accounts to maintain the type of life they're accustomed to. So it depends a lot on where you live, and where you want to live.”
Climate, activities, and proximity to loved ones all factor into those decisions, and thus must factor in to how one plans for their retirement. If a person has loved ones in several cities, they may want to plan to save up enough money to cover transportation for visits, or enough to afford a home or an apartment with a guest room.
In order to actually manage to save up all the money needed to retire in relative comfort, financial experts suggested using a 50/30/20 budget frame work. According to the 50/30/20 framework, people should, after taxes, take 20 percent of their income and put it toward savings and debt repayment, and 50 percent should go to needs, while 30 percent should go to wants.
The money set aside for savings ideally should be placed into high yield savings accounts, retirement accounts and investments into the stock market. Taking advantage of compound interest — that is, interest that builds on interest earned — is a top recommendation from virtually all of the major retirement planning experts.
amount Americans believe they need to retire comfortably
“Given that we have more uncertainty than ever, I think it's so important to get money working for you in stocks and assets like real estate. You do want to be smart — if it comes down to someone enjoying a luxury like a trip or investing a few hundred bucks, I'd probably tell you to go with the investment,” Valega said.
A good place to start, according to Fidelity, is investing in a standard index fund that tracks the S&P 500, as its more diversified than buying individual stocks like a day trader might. Most major brokers have S&P 500 fund or ETF like Vanguard.
Perhaps the most important tip that financial experts have recommended has less to do with the technical side of budgeting and investing and more to do with perspective. All of this advice — saving more than a million dollars, hitting decade benchmarks, navigating the stock market — can seem daunting, but setting short term goals can help alleviate some of that stress, since the worst thing you can do is nothing at all.

I'm Lifehacker's resident marathon runner and senior finance writer—and now, I'm merging my two worlds. While running requires minimal equipment compared to other activities, the right footwear can make or break your experience—and your budget
Let's break down what various types of runners should expect to spend on shoes
and where you can save without compromising your running experience
If you're just starting out with one or two short runs per week
or mixing running with other forms of exercise
Worth investing in: A proper fitting. Even at discount retailers like DSW or Famous Footwear, find someone who can watch you walk or run to ensure you're not severely overpronating
What to avoid: Ultra-cheap generic athletic shoes under $40—these often lack the minimal cushioning and support needed even for casual running
For those running three to four times weekly
you'll want something more substantial that balances price and performance
Where to save: Shop previous generation models or check running specialty stores' clearance racks. Running warehouse websites frequently offer last season's designs at significant discounts
What to avoid: Premium racing shoes or highly specialized models—you'll pay more for features you don't need yet
your footwear becomes a crucial training tool
What to look for: Shoes specific to your running style
Where to save: Look for shoes with high mileage ratings (450-500+) to get more value per dollar
What to avoid: Buying solely based on looks or trends
That Instagram-famous shoe might not work for your specific running style
For serious competitors focused on performance
shoe technology becomes a legitimate competitive advantage
My word of advice: Don't spend money like a competitive racer unless you're confident this is your running identity
What to look for: Race-specific shoes with carbon plates
Where to save: Reserve these expensive shoes exclusively for races and key workouts
What to avoid: Using these high-tech racing shoes for everyday training—they'll wear out quickly and you'll lose the "special" feeling on race day
If you prefer natural running with minimal interference between your foot and the ground
you can sometimes spend less—but not always
What to look for: Low drop (difference between heel and forefoot height)
often cost less than traditional running shoes—but you have to be prepared to train as a borderline barefoot runner
What to avoid: Ultra-cheap "barefoot-style" knockoffs that don't actually provide the proper anatomical fit needed for safe minimalist running
While I don't have as much personal experience here
I know off-road enthusiasts face different demands and usually require specialized footwear
What to look for: Aggressive tread patterns
Where to save: Unless you're exclusively a trail runner
one pair of trail shoes alongside your road shoes is sufficient
eliminating the need for multiple specialized trail models
What to avoid: Waterproof trail shoes unless you run in consistently cold
wet conditions—they're more expensive and less breathable
here are some features that I constantly see marketed
but in my opinion never justify a higher price tag:
Fashion collaborations: Designer-branded running shoes typically add $30-50 without performance benefits
Gimmicky technology: Be skeptical of proprietary features that can't be explained in simple terms
"Smart" shoes: Shoes with smart tracking and embedded sensors are neat for about one day, but their value proposition can't compete with a good running watch or app
Limited edition designs: While they look cool
they function identically to standard versions
The right shoes aren't just about performance—they're injury prevention tools
Some money-saving strategies work across all runner types:
Rotation to extend life: Using two pairs alternately can give each shoe time to decompress
allowing you to extend how long each pair lasts
Outlet shopping: Factory outlets for major brands often sell shoes at 30-40% below retail
Timing purchases: New models typically release annually
Running specialty store loyalty programs: Many offer discounts after multiple purchases or will price-match online retailers
Remember that the most expensive shoe isn't necessarily the best for you—it's about finding the right match for your specific needs, gait, and running goals. A proper fitting at a specialty running store is worth the time investment, even if you eventually purchase elsewhere. the underwater Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted with astonishing force
That single difference led many scientists to underestimate its impact initially
But new research has revealed a startling truth: submarine volcanoes
can unleash forces powerful enough to cool hemispheres and reshape the upper atmosphere
Led by researchers from the University of Auckland and Tonga, a recent study shows that Hunga’s eruption had far-reaching effects. It injected vast amounts of steam into the sky and reshaped what we know about volcanic climate influence
Submarine eruptions were once seen as secondary players in climate dynamics
Volcanoes influence the climate by injecting gases and particles into the atmosphere
sulfur dioxide was considered the major player in determining the cooling effects of volcanic eruptions
forming reflective aerosols that reduced sunlight and lowered global temperatures
But the underwater Hunga volcano didn’t behave like those eruptions
It released far less sulfur dioxide than expected
That led some to believe its climate influence would be minor
Yet the opposite has turned out to be true
This underwater volcano’s impact has now been linked to measurable cooling across the Southern Hemisphere as well as other unusual atmospheric changes
“Submarine volcanism has previously been overlooked in global climate studies
because there is typically not much atmospheric sulfur dioxide released,” said Professor Shane Cronin
Cronin’s work challenges the traditional view that sulfur dioxide is the sole metric for climate risk
It injected up to 3 billion tons of water vapor into the sky in just one hour
That vapor didn’t just stay in the lower atmosphere
It rose all the way to the stratosphere and mesosphere – layers of the atmosphere that are rarely touched by earthly forces
Water vapor in these upper layers can trap heat and affect weather patterns in complex ways
This eruption showed that submarine volcanoes can influence the climate not just by what they emit
but by how high they can push that material
“The eruption has been shown by several recently published studies to have cooled the Southern Hemisphere and caused a range of other atmospheric and climate impacts that we are still discovering,” noted Cronin
These ongoing discoveries are forcing a re-evaluation of the role underwater eruptions play in Earth’s climate balance
While the eruption had the potential to unleash a large amount of sulfur dioxide
satellite data initially reported only modest levels
That seemed odd for an eruption of Hunga’s scale
Volcanic ash samples collected from the eruption helped solve the mystery
Researchers found that the magma stored deep below the ocean surface – between 2.1 and over 5.6 kilometers down – was rich in sulfur
the eruption happened between 400 and 1,000 meters below sea level
over 93% of the sulfur never reached the air
It dissolved straight into the ocean waters
The team estimated a total release of 9.4 teragrams of sulfur
Yet almost all of it bypassed the sky entirely
This means that traditional monitoring tools
like satellite sulfur tracking and even polar ice-core analysis
The sulfur was there – it just took a different path
The eruption wasn’t just powerful; it was also incredibly fast
Magma surged upward from the deep reservoir to the ocean floor in under three minutes
That rapid ascent preserved microscopic chemical features
Researchers discovered magmatic mingling with sharp contrasts – about 1% differences – in water content between magma types
This revealed that complex storage and mixing processes occurred just before the blast
it released 319 teragrams of magmatic water
But even that number paled in comparison to the water that was created through the interaction between magma and seawater
Less than 10% of the total water vapor came from the magma itself
The vast majority resulted from seawater flashing into steam – enough to transform the sky above
Because most of the sulfur entered the ocean
the eruption left only a faint trace in the atmosphere
This poses a major challenge for climate science
Many global records of past eruptions rely on atmospheric sulfur data
especially from satellite sensors or ice cores
If eruptions like Hunga leave no clear signal in these tools
Submarine eruptions may be more common – and more climate-relevant – than previously believed
they go uncounted in climate histories and models
This could mean that volcanic influence has been underestimated in past centuries or misjudged in terms of future risks
Submarine explosions can trigger massive tsunamis
Cronin and his team, including researchers now based at the University of Otago
continue to work with Tongan partners to understand the long-term effects
“We are striving to understand the broader hazards of submarine volcanism
including tsunami and damage to shorelines and internet data cables
as well as how these eruptions affect our environment and climate,” explained Cronin
This collaboration is helping Pacific nations prepare for future eruptions
It’s also drawing attention to gaps in global monitoring systems
If a submarine eruption can impact the climate and infrastructure without much warning
scientists and policymakers will need to rethink how they track and respond to these events
The Hunga eruption has done more than shake the ocean floor – it has shaken the assumptions of climate science
It showed that water vapor can drive climate shifts. It proved that sulfur can vanish into the sea, where it can remain hidden from satellites and ice. And it confirmed that submarine volcanoes deserve far more attention than they’ve received
As researchers continue to explore Hunga’s aftermath
one thing becomes clear: the deep sea holds more than secrets
It holds the power to shape the air above us
The study is published in the journal Nature Geoscience

Kerry Wan/ZDNETI regularly use the terminal app on my MacBook Pro and iMac. Sometimes, it's just to secure shell into one of my Linux machines; other times
I prefer not to use the default MacOS terminal app.
it doesn't close when you type exit (which is the standard behavior for most terminal apps)
Also: How to create and use MacOS Smart Folders - and make file management a breeze
I always turn to an alternative terminal app when on MacOS
If you're interested in doing the same
I've rounded up what I consider to be the six best MacOS terminal applications
and I'm certain one of these will serve your needs perfectly
I'm going to start with the best of the bunch. I've been using iTerm2 for a long time now and have found it to be everything I need in a terminal app
instant replay (to recover text that was previously deleted from the terminal)
Another really handy feature with iTerm2 is the ability to set a hotkey so you can quickly call up the terminal
This is set in Settings > Keys > Hotkey by enabling App Hotkey
I set iTerm2 with transparency because it reminds me of the Linux terminal
I can see what's going on with a single glance
iTerm2 is free and works with MacOS 10.14 or newer (on both Intel and Apple Silicon computers)
iTerm2 is my go-to terminal app when I need to run commands quickly
Kitty is a terminal app available for both Linux and MacOS
Kitty supports modern features like graphics
One of Kitty's best features is kittens
you can view remote images in Kitty with the help of the icat kitten

Warp has become my go-to when I need a combination of the terminal app and artificial intelligence (AI)
and it's nice to have it baked into a terminal.
The AI in Warp isn't what you probably think it is. Instead, it's a means of better understanding commands or code. Sometimes, when I'm working on Python code
I'll come across a line or block I don't quite understand
I can paste that code into the Warp terminal
and it will explain to me what's going on.
Also: How to close apps in MacOS from the command line
For those who like the idea of using the terminal in MacOS
this technique is a great way to learn the ins and outs of how it all works
paste it into Warp and let it explain everything
You can also ask Warp in plain language how to do something via the command line
Warp includes features like split panes, git integration, workflows, themes, and more. You can use Warp for free, but you'll need to purchase a monthly plan to get support and more business-centric features
I use Warp terminal to boost my research
This is an Electron-based terminal app built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Hyper is highly configurable
but you must edit a text file to make any changes
Even though you'll find a Settings entry in the menu
all that option does is open the configuration file in your default web browser
I suggest this terminal to more advanced users.
Also: The best Linux distros for beginners
you can change the look and feel of the terminal app
but that process requires using the Node.js package manager
which is yet another reason why I would only recommend this app for advanced users
You can install and use Hyper for free on MacOS
Hyper might seem fairly basic but it does have a few tricks
Core Shell is a terminal window dedicated to making SSH easier
it's also a full-featured terminal app
so even if you don't frequently (or ever) use SSH
this terminal app can still serve you with features like OpenSSH compatibility
tags -- and those are just the free features.
Also: 8 simple ways Mac users can better protect their privacy
The Core Shell terminal app can serve as a handy SSH client or a local terminal
Tabby simplifies connecting to SSH servers with profiles and connections
you can create profiles for various SSH connections
Tabby is also a general terminal window that includes theming
Also: 5 easy ways to turn MacOS Finder into a way better file manager
You'll also find plugins for a good number of extra features
Tabby features tabs and the ability to quickly change between any shells you might have installed (such as bash)
There's also an integrated serial terminal
an optional Quake mode (to quickly show/hide the terminal window with a keyboard click)
Tabby might seem basic
but once you start poking around the Settings window
There you have it -- six terminal apps for MacOS that are considerably better than the default
Give one of these tools a try and see if your selection doesn't quickly win you over

I figured I'd give one of these new noodles a shot: the Chinese Spicy Garlic
this flavor is at a respectable medium (two peppers)
I wanted to see if it genuinely packed some heat
the individual package size of these is relatively small; the total dry weight is 3 ounces
the Buldak Carbonara I have in the pantry is a much bigger 4.58 ounces
adding the noodles and a single seasoning packet
and boiling everything for three minutes together
just a bit of stirring to break the brick of thin noodles up so they don't stick
And unlike lots of other instant ramen I've eaten
the three minute boiling mark is relatively accurate (though I ended up adding an extra 30 seconds)
I'll start with the good stuff first: These noodles do have some punch to them
If you're going to compare the Chinese Spicy Garlic Maggi noodles to a typical American packaged product
they would read as slightly closer to hot than to medium
If you're going to compare it to any popular variety of Korean spicy instant ramen
it'd be more along the lines of a standard medium heat level
The liquid here is somewhat interesting in that it's a cross between a broth and a sauce
As it cools off it starts to thicken slightly and adhere to the noodles
A sprinkle of green onion rings and an egg would dress these things up perfectly
if that's what you seek — they're just good ol' spicy noodles
Maybe a dash of Maggi would perk them right up
WASHINGTON – On his second day in office, President Donald Trump was asked if he would continue selling products that benefited him personally
after sales of a new Trump "meme coin" had soared to as much as $20 billion in value
I heard it was very successful,” Trump replied

Trump never answered whether he would seek personal profit from the presidency – something historians say virtually every other president has pledged to avoid
Just two of the cryptocurrency investments owned by Trump-affiliated entities have made at least $300 million in trading fees alone on sales of his meme coin and other digital currency since January
Greater potential profits lie in the Trump entities’ stake in the value of the meme coin and their other Trump-themed crypto investments

ranking Democrat on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations
told USA TODAY he’s launching an investigation into Trump’s profits as president
The cryptocurrency ventures − including a digital meme coin celebrating Trump’s survival of a July 2024 assassination attempt − will be key to Blumenthal’s inquiry
“makes money off the trading because the transactions generate a fee
as well as from the increase in price for the coins that results from his promoting or enticing sales.”
“Whether it's tens of millions or hundreds of millions really is a topic for the investigation,” said Blumenthal
“But I just cannot emphasize how craven and brazen this kind of stunt is
but it involves millions of dollars and a threat to our national security.”
Blumenthal said he was especially concerned that the opaque nature of crypto transactions makes it virtually impossible to determine how much Trump is profiting – and who might be seeking influence by purchasing the Trump coins
could pose a national security threat by allowing foreign governments to enrich Trump – and gain his favor − without public knowledge
saying the president did not have a conflict of interest because his assets are controlled by his children
told USA TODAY the company was "not involved in politics whatsoever."
Trump has upended the customs restraining a commander-in-chief’s ability to profit from the office
one of the many private companies affiliated with Trump and his family upped the ante by offering existing and new buyers of the $TRUMP meme coin "the most EXCLUSIVE INVITATION in the world."
A meme coin is a type of crypto asset inspired by internet memes, characters or trends "for which the promoter seeks to attract an enthusiastic online community to purchase the meme coin and engage in its trading," according to the Securities and Exchange Commission
meme coins are akin to collectibles," the SEC says
"Meme coins also typically have limited or no use or functionality."
The $TRUMP coin is marketed as a celebration of Trump's defiant response to a July 13
assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler
“With his fist in the air and the iconic battle cry FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
President Trump showed the world what a LEADER is made of," a description says
calling an image from that day "the most memorable meme of the century.”

The announcement from the official website for the $TRUMP meme coin said the top 220 investors would win an “intimate private dinner” with the president on May 22 at his northern Virginia golf club
The top 25 investors in the Trump meme coin were promised "an ultra-VIP experience that includes a private reception with the president and a guided White House tour."
The $TRUMP meme coin surged as much as 80%, adding more than $100 million to its value, according to Finance Magnates and other crypto-trackers
Crypto analysis firm Chainalysis found that Trump and business entities connected to him made more than $1.3 million in trading fees in the days after the dinner and tour were announced, adding to the more than $320 million in fees and income they had already taken in
Chainalysis spokesman Jorah Huntington told USA TODAY
“This is one of the most blatant and appalling instances of selling access to the presidency I've ever seen,” said Donald Sherman, executive director and chief counsel of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington
The White House and the Trump Organization did not respond to a list of questions seeking comment about Trump's meme coin and other investments
Neither did lawyer William Burck, who was hired in January to reinforce the Trump Organization’s ethical standards but was fired recently after it emerged he was also representing Harvard University in the school's legal clash with the Trump administration
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told USA TODAY: “The President’s assets are in a trust managed by his children
Kelly was referring to an announcement in January by the Trump Organization that Trump would hand over daily management of his multi-billion-dollar real estate
media and licensing portfolio to his children when he entered the White House
But Trump’s current arrangement is even more open to abuse than during his first term
when countries like Saudi Arabia paid his companies millions of dollars
according to USA TODAY interviews and reports by congressional Democrats and watchdog groups
presidents have pledged not to enrich themselves while in office to ensure confidence that policy decisions are made for the country’s good – not personal gain
“That is no longer the case,” said Danielle Brian
president of the Washington-based Project On Government Oversight
“President Trump has made it clear he's going to make as much money as he can while he's president because he's president – and he's unabashed about it.”
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a former federal prosecutor, is one of several Senate Democrats who have called for the Office of Government Ethics to investigate Trump’s crypto ventures, including whether his establishment of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in March improperly helped his own investments
“Donald Trump's making a ton of money, and the only losers here are the American people,” Schiff said in a video posted on X
Crypto empire expansionFor Trump, who calls himself the first “Crypto President,” the $TRUMP meme coin is just one piece of a larger empire that also includes a meme coin for first lady Melania Trump that initially was valued in the billions of dollars
The Trumps now have a claim on 75% of World Liberty Financial's net revenues from token sales, 60% from operations − and about $400 million in transaction fees, according to the company's website and Reuters
told USA TODAY he could not comment on how much money Trump and his family have made from the venture
He said allegations of conflict of interest or corruption were "hyperbole at its highest and finest
and completely wrong and completely false." Wachsman described World Liberty as a "non-political organization
We're not involved in politics whatsoever."
In his call for an investigation, Schiff cited the case of Justin Sun, a Hong Kong crypto entrepreneur who pumped $75 million into World Liberty Financial
Sun had faced a civil fraud case by federal securities regulators that involved celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul
"Well, it won't surprise you to learn that the fraud case against Justin Sun has now been put on hold by the Trump administration,” Schiff said in his video
"The American people simply cannot know now with this administration whether it is acting on behalf of the American people or on behalf of Donald Trump's financial interests."
did not respond to a call and email seeking comment
As of May 1, Sun − with an estimated investment of $14 million − topped the $TRUMP meme coin website's leaderboard of investors eligible for the private dinner with Trump
the company has branched into other ventures
close friend and billionaire developer Steve Witkoff
adding that “the identity of its major holders
World Liberty is now also in business with Justin Sun
Sun appeared with Witkoff and Eric Trump at a May 1 crypto conference in Dubai
Because his White House financial disclosure form isn't due at the Office of Government Ethics until mid-May
there is no way to know how much Trump has earned from various sources
Foreign governments spent millions at Trump’s hotels and golf courses during his first term
with Trump businesses earning up to $160 million from foreign states
What is the thing of value when you put $5 million into these Trump meme coins
other than that you are putting money in the president's pocket?” asked Rick Claypool of Public Citizen
Trump has sold his Washington hotel. But he still profits from foreign spending on his golf properties. Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf tour has held seven tournaments at Trump courses, even as Trump pressures the more established PGA Tour to merge with LIV − a move benefiting the Saudis
The PGA Tour turned down LIV's latest multibillion-dollar offer in early April
"But hopefully we're going to get the two tours to merge," Trump told reporters on Air Force One
And I think having them merge would be a great thing."
Selling access to Trump’s inner circleLast month, amid White House Correspondents' Dinner festivities, Donald Trump Jr. co-hosted a launch party for his “The Executive Branch,” a private club costing more than $500,000 to join
Politico, quoting people familiar with the venture, said its goal was to "cater to the business and tech moguls who are looking to nurture their relationships with the Trump administration."
On April 30, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., brought oversized charts to the Senate floor to denounce what he called Trump's "100 Days of Corruption."
was "the biggest scandal in the history of the American presidency."
But in the last 30 years, child mortality rates have plummeted in low-income countries. In Ethiopia, they’ve dropped from 20% to 5%, as shown in the chart below. The Gambia and Afghanistan are just two more examples of countries with dramatic declines.
I’ve also shown the change in rich countries on the chart
it might seem that child mortality is no longer an issue in rich countries
Their rates are very low and barely visible compared to many other countries
It also looks like almost no progress has been made in the last 30 years: mortality was low and is still low
But I think both of these conclusions are wrong. Countries in the European Union, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom — the list goes on — have made childhood much safer in my own 30-year lifetime.1 It’s just something we rarely hear about
I also don’t think that this is a “solved problem”; it is still too common for parents to see their children die
and there’s a lot more that we can do to save their lives
We have this perception because we compare countries by their absolute reduction in child mortality
Many low- and middle-income countries have reduced these rates by 5
or 20 percentage points over the last 30 years
that would be impossible for many richer countries: the child mortality rate in the European Union (EU) was around 1% in 1990
so the maximum reduction it could achieve in absolute terms would be one percentage point
It’s only when we look at the relative reduction in child mortality that we see that rich countries have also made impressive progress
The chart below shows these same countries — or groups of countries — plotted as the change in mortality rates since 1990
All of them have halved child mortality rates or more
In the previous chart, progress in the EU looked a little underwhelming. But, in fact, rates have fallen by 69%. Even in Japan, one of the safest countries to be born in, child mortality rates have dropped by almost two-thirds. Those are not small reductions. Children are much less likely to die than they were in 1990.
Before studying this data, I probably wouldn’t have guessed that if I had a baby today they’d have less than half the risk of dying in childhood than I did.2 It’s progress that we almost never see on the news
I think it’s important to highlight this point for two reasons
the idea that progress on health has stalled (or even regressed) in rich countries is
But it’s not true: improved treatments and vaccinations developed by scientists
and parents' choices have made things much safer for children even in the world’s richest countries
These efforts were not for nothing: they’ve given kids a future and spared many families the pain of losing a child
So it would have been wrong of us to accept or be happy with where we were in 1990, with around 1% of children still dying. I also think it would be wrong of us to assume that 0.5% is the level we should accept today; we know that we can save more lives.5

Charlotte Gehrke has explored the use of Arctic marine mammals in science communication and how these animals are utilized to convey broader issues related to the Arctic
Arctic researcher Charlotte Gehrke incorporates her journalistic training into her research
valuing science communication as a democratic project
particularly in the current political and environmental situation.
Researcher Charlotte Gehrke is originally from Germany
but her love of the Arctic and environmental policy has taken her all over the world in pursuit of knowledge
where she concluded her PhD just last week
Her thesis focused on Arctic marine mammals and their role in Arctic science communication and diplomacy
"Everything boils down to one thing," she says to High North News
"This is a beautiful place to take care of."
Hannes Hansen-Magnusson with research on multilateral diplomacy in the Arctic
kicking off a deep interest in all things Arctic
but specifically Arctic science communication and diplomacy.
Together, they started the Arctic Relations blog in 2020
featuring scholarship and stories from the circumpolar North
showcasing Gehrke's passion for science communication.
to film reviews and reports from Indigenous youths," she says
enthusiastically adding: "We even have a story about Santa!"
The blog illustrates Gehrke's passion for science dissemination and how important it is not just to talk the talk
Charlotte has explored the use of Arctic marine mammals (AMMs: polar bears
and whales) in science communication and how these animals are utilized to convey broader issues related to the Arctic
"These are all animals people think about when they think about the Arctic
the animals they'd see in a David Attenborough documentary," she explains
adding that they are referred to as charismatic megafauna
meaning that they are species that are large in the category they represent and have symbolic value or widespread popular appeal
"We use these species to communicate broader stories about the Arctic
particularly concerning the effect of climate change," she says.
She found that one issue is the excessive reliance on images of these animals
which creates a disparity between the reality of the Arctic and the media's image of it
Indigenous peoples are being erased from stories about the Arctic
"We have something called the National Geographic effect
where we have these amazing charismatic species that are great to use to connect with people because everyone knows what a polar bear is
and you can build on that connection," she says
But the reliance on these animals makes people forget that people are living in these places
She says that one of her interviewees even said that people care more about animals than they do about Indigenous peoples
making the animal images a more powerful image when telling Arctic stories and influencing environmental policy
The polar bear has long been the undisputed king of the Arctic. (Archive photo from Svalbard: Peter Prokosch)
"We tie narratives so closely to polar bears that the first thing people think of when they think about climate change is a polar bear on a disappearing ice floe," she says
"The danger is that some people use these animals to spread climate scepticism
They say that polar bears are doing well in Svalbard
the media's over-reliance on Arctic marine mammals has made them the symbol of climate change in the Arctic
and some struggle to see beyond climate change's effect on these animals
Practitioners need to 1) consider the human perspectives from which AMM-based communications are created
and the lived realities and knowledges of local and Indigenous Arctic communities; 2) support local news reporting to facilitate authentic news coverage from the North about the North; 3) strengthen practitioner relationships to ensure the kind of transparent and open exchange necessary for successful science communication
and diplomacy to occur; and 4) diversify flagship species
playing on a broader cast of charismatic species representing the impacts of environmental crises to minimise the fallout of misinformation targeting specific flagship species
Gehrke has also studied tourism in the Arctic region
"We looked at what happens when a cruise ship comes to a community
which often is a smaller community without the infrastructure to handle it," she says
"Even though we have some regulations for tourism
people involved in the tourism industry thought that there weren't enough regulations on how tourism operators were working in the Arctic
Operators who didn't comply with certain safety standards were of particular worry."
"People would tell us about whale-watching boats that would take on too many passengers and the dangers and implications that would have for search and rescue operations
to take care of all the cruise tourists if something were to happen
Gehrke emphasizes the value of science communication and says it is crucial not just to preach science communication
"I have done office hours and Zoom rooms for people who have participated in my projects to explain the results in easy wording and not academic jargon."
to explain these hoity-toity words and concepts
such as science communication applications for science diplomacy," says the researcher.
She wishes more people would consider science communication as much a result of their research as peer-reviewed articles
she recognizes that most researchers do not have much extra time to do this
all projects would have science communications officers to help researchers disseminate their work
who describe it as their duty to communicate to the public
I think it's great when people have that awareness and want to live up to that expectation that they are in service of the public," says Gehrke.
It's great when researchers want to live up to the expectation that they are in service of the public
When asked about the challenges ahead for science communication
she says that one key issue is that science communication is increasingly expected without being increasingly funded
with severe cuts in funding and limitations on research
will also have implications for science communication
there are now threats to freedom of research and research security
I think we're seeing a chilling effect on science communication right now
We see that people are not attending conferences or events as frequently as before
and people are choosing their words extremely carefully and feeling unable to comment on many matters."
"We saw some of the things we are in for in the last Trump term
But now the hits are coming with an incredible force behind them," she says
"We just had the conversation about how the Russian invasion of Ukraine will impact Arctic science
and now we are having that conversation again."
when asked about the most important message to convey about the Arctic now
she refers to a quote from the children's story The Boy
"There is so much beauty we need to look after."
"We must always bring it back to the most important thing: care for this place
explaining that she did not end up in this field by accident
I didn't just decide to research the Arctic because I like polar bears

The Nevada product struggled with his shot in his 14 games for the Valley after being traded to them at the deadline from the Charlotte Hornets
Welcome to our Phoenix Suns Season in Review series
where we take a closer look at each player who suited up during the 2024–25 campaign
and what each player can do to take the next step heading into next season
It took Nevada Wolfpack alum Cody Martin more than a month to suit up for the Valley after being traded to Phoenix at the trade deadline this season
not giving him much time or healthy opportunities to show what he could bring to the team as he was dealing with a sports hernia injury
he didn’t eclipse double-digit scoring once or have a game with multiple threes
registering just one game with more than 20 minutes played for the team
Martin will be entering the final year of his four-year
$31 million contract he signed with the Charlotte Hornets before the 2022-2023 season
The final year of his deal becomes fully guaranteed on June 30th
Martin was hurt with a sports hernia when he was acquired by the Suns for Jusuf Nurkić back in March
he made his debut more than a month after being traded
he averaged 14:42 minutes a game and took just 4.1 shots
If that were his season totals excluding his time with Charlotte
it would be his lowest minutes per game and second-fewest shots per game of his career
He wasn’t on the team long enough or played enough significant minutes to be considered a part of the problem for the Suns
but he shot 50% from the field or better in just five games for the team and under 35% in his nine other contests
His best game for the team came in the Valley’s best win of the season, beating the eventual 64-win Cleveland Cavaliers
Martin averaged 1.3 stocks per game (steals and blocks) with the Suns in his limited minutes; his four stocks in the team’s win against the Chicago Bulls were significant during the squad’s short
but strong stint of play in the middle of March
he’s an aggressive attacker at the glass and provided strong hustle for the team
Martin struggled to shoot efficiently in his time with the Valley
Shooting 35.1% from the field and 11.1% from deep
but it’s fair to attribute that partly due to the two-month absence he had that started while he was still in Charlotte
but he barely shot a third of that on less than two attempts with the Suns
Martin is unlikely to crack the Suns' rotation if he’s on the team next season
his salary and expiring contract can be used as a vehicle for the Suns to make trades with other teams
The Suns appear to be trying to get under the second apro,n and Phoenix may not guarantee his contract as a result
Was it the reason the Suns had a bad season
But his play with the team was not strong enough to justify the Suns getting rid of a first-round pick just to get rid of Jusuf Nurkić
Potentially if he returns next year and has a full training camp and is healthy
This results in the location hosting some action-packed chaos
but Valentina likely had to fork out the big bucks to turn the property into a battlefield
how much did it cost her to buy Avengers Tower

Cohen for an estimation of the skyscraper's value
and let's just say Valentina probably needed Tony Stark-levels of wealth to buy it
"The metric by which we would measure the value would be price per square foot
there's nowhere where they safely tell you whether it's a million square feet
So we're kind of shooting in the dark here
but I would say one could easily assume that the Avengers Tower would sell for a billion dollars or more based upon the look of it
The tower's real-life counterpart is the Metlife Building
which was valued at around $3 billion as recently as 2024
it's entirely possible that the MCU location would have cost Valentina significantly more than the figure Cohen is throwing around
but let us not forget that property values change all the time
is that the Avengers' old base has more perks than other buildings in the Big Apple
Cohen noted some other pros and cons associated with buying a building like the Watchtower
which is a neat perk as helipads were banned in New York City in 1977
This law was introduced after a tragic crash into the Metlife Building — then called the Pan Am Building — in May of that year
while having the helipad could be advantageous for folks
it would also require the building's proprietors to pull some serious strings with city officials
but there are probably insurance issues associated with this particular MCU building due to all of the battles that have happened there in the past
While it's a fabulous location and it's terribly prestigious
how would you feel about being a tenant in Avengers Tower
We first visited Avengers Tower in 2012's The Avengers
with the skyscraper returning in Avengers: Age of Ultron three years later
by the time Spider-Man: Homecoming swung into theaters in 2016
Tony Stark had decided to sell the building
It being emptied by Happy Hogan was a major plot point in the reboot
with The Vulture attempting to steal Iron Man's many dangerous weapons during Homecoming's final act
Spider-Man ultimately thwarted his sinister plan
Avengers Tower has since been teased in the MCU
though Marvel Studios has stopped short of revealing who purchased the building
While the Fantastic Four and Mephisto have been named as likely possibilities
Thunderbolts* confirmed that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and O.X.E
were the ones who bought the building from Iron Man
That was for the "good optics," and so the company would have somewhere to base its Sentry program
So, how much did Val pay for Avengers Tower? IGN caught up with several experts
which owns and invests in several million square feet of NYC real estate
He has four decades of experience and is a big Marvel Comics fan
and believes Avengers Tower would have demanded an asking price of $1.1 billion
"The metric by which we would measure the value would be price per square foot," Cohen explained
there's nowhere where they safely tell you whether it's a million square feet
"So we're kind of shooting in the dark here
Cohen doesn't expect such a sale to have been an easy process
perhaps explaining why The Avengers' former base stood empty for so many years
"It would be very challenging to buy property insurance for Avengers Tower if you were a conventional investor
don't occupy the entire building," Cohen pondered
"While it's a fabulous location and it's terribly prestigious
or do they ride with the conventional tenants?" he continued
"If you really built Avengers Tower in the middle of the city
idiosyncratic considerations one would have to take into account."
Val renamed Avengers Tower the "Watchtower" and started adding to the skyscraper in a way that paid homage to The Sentry's Watchtower that sat above the team's base in the comics
How much the building will evolve after that memorable post-credits scene remains to be seen

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported a quarterbacks coach said that the passer was "brash" and "arrogant" in pre-draft interviews
CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones also reported that teams felt Shedeur didn't "give it his all" during interviews and "more or less sandbagged" meetings with teams he didn't want to be selected by
The 23-year-old will now look to rise above his draft position and attempt to earn Cleveland's starting quarterback job in training camp
The dreary weather continued Monday and is expected to last into Tuesday around the New York City area
with a lot of rain and cooler temperatures
As a lingering area of low-pressure parks itself over the Ohio Valley
rounds of showers and thunderstorms are likely to persist through at least Wednesday
A First Alert Weather Day was issued for Monday and lasted into the evening
The rain earlier in the day was heavy at times
totaling up to 3 inches in some areas and fueling fears of localized flooding
Additional periods of heavy rain are likely to persist from Monday night into Tuesday
Up to 4 inches of rain is probable between Monday and Tuesday
with some locations possibly receiving higher amounts
which have the potential to finally wipe out the existing drought across the Tri-State Area
a return to more seasonable readings is anticipated for most of the week

Vehicles lose value the more they are driven
there are Cybertruck owners who appear to have thought they were buying money-printing machines
someone actually flipped and sold a limited edition Foundation Series Cybertruck for nearly twice its MSRP at $244,000
The Cybertruck's value wasn't meant to last
The controversial truck from a controversial company run by a controversial man is subject to the law of gravity of depreciation as much as the next set of wheels
how much has it depreciated since the first geometric truck hit the streets
We reported in 2024 that the overall Cybertruck depreciation curve is really quite poor. Now, CarGurus is showing even more of a drop in the past year from April 28
Cybertruck prices went from $168,543 down to $84,470 — a 49.96% decline
Digging in a little further, according to TopSpeed
the average depreciation for all cars across three years (longer than the Cybertruck has even been out) is just 30.5%
That puts the Cybertruck's near 50% decline in the last year in the far bottom tier for the category
By contrast, according to Kelly Blue Book
KBB also says that the 2023 model of the great-granddaddy of all pickups
has dropped a mere 33% in the same amount of time the Cybertruck has been around
Predicting where prices will be in a few years is a bit tricky here
the Cybertruck is too new to have hard data on how it usually performs over the long term
TopSpeed estimates that it will fall by 59.5% in five years
Those numbers aren't surprising given the current state of the company's sales
There are more storm clouds on the Cybertrucks' horizon, too, and they don't look good for resale value. Thanks to a recall earlier this year, we know that Tesla has only delivered around 46,000 Cybertrucks to date
While that number doesn't look too bad in a vacuum
CEO Elon Musk was initially claiming that he had over a million preorders for these low-res-looking trucks
Worse, Tesla dealerships appear to be sitting on over $200 million worth of Cybertruck inventory that they just can't shift
Word is that things have deteriorated to the point where said dealerships won't even take Cybertrucks — their own vehicles
— as trade-ins anymore for fear they won't be able to sell them again
and pushing it down further is the simple fact that Tesla keeps slashing the price of new Cybertrucks
down to around $75,000 for a base model from an original price of $100,000
Furthermore, the fact that political backlash against Musk's handling of the federal government bureaucracy has led to vandalism against Teslas, and particularly Cybertrucks
If a potential buyer is worried that a Tesla might be a target
they're not likely to buy a used one for a high price
There are plenty of viewing options for fans hoping to follow along at home
considering NBC will be broadcasting live starting at 2:30 p.m
ET and streaming will be available on Peacock
But what if you have a spare Lily Pulitzer dress lying around and would like to attempt a last-minute trip to the legendary racetrack
Here's how much you're looking at for a ticket:
If you'd like something a little bougier, try an Infield Final Turn General Admission ticket, which is similar to the GA ticket but offers a private, standing room only area in the Final Turn of the Infield. As of Monday, April 28, a single GA ticket at this tier costs at least $220.60.
For anyone comfortable spending more than that, you could try a Frontside Plaza Walkaround ticket
though the Derby website notes that these are no longer available for purchase for this year's event
These tickets are sold as a two-day package for both the Oaks and the Derby
and boast off-site parking access and an all-inclusive food and beverage menu
there are the private suites and the private dining options
The Derby facilitates each of these accommodations
and prices aren't even listed for some of them
so you'd have to contact the event's sales department for more information
A dining ticket, depending on which you choose, includes either a luxurious multi-course meal or an all-inclusive food and beverage menu. Just be mindful of the restaurant you select; some have better views of the track than others. The cheapest option here—the Wicker Garden—starts at $1,711 per guest

Despite significant investment in their defensive line, the Steelers may not be much better there this year, Ray Fittipaldo believes. While they made no big moves in free agency, they did draft two defensive linemen, including one in Round 1. Derrick Harmon should be an immediate starter
whom they released in March after three seasons
remains the nucleus of the Steelers’ defensive line
While he played at an All-Pro level last season
everybody is waiting for the other shoe to drop
but he also played the entire year—when “healthy”—compromised due to injury
the Steelers don’t have much in the way of proven defensive line commodities
Keeanu Benton still remains largely in the “promising” category
“They’re all in on their 36-year-old future Hall of Famer, and then young guys. And all the guys in between, these guys they accumulated in the draft, are just kind of there”, Fittipaldo said of the Steelers’ defensive line on 93.7 The Fan
what have they done in the NFL to make you think they’re even gonna be rotational players
I’ll go slightly better just because of the pedigree of Harmon
you’re counting on rookies and a 36-year-old”
The Steelers reportedly hoped to make a significant defensive line signing in free agency but were presumably outbid. According to Gerry Dulac, they wanted Javon Kinlaw
$45 million contract with the Washington Commanders instead
the Steelers made two small signings on the defensive line
They added Daniel Ekuale and Esezi Otomewo
both of whom will compete for depth in the room
That’s partly because they knew that the quality of the position was high in the draft
For the first time in decades, the Steelers drafted two defensive line prospects in the first five rounds. In Round 1, they added Derrick Harmon, as previously mentioned, a likely immediate starter. Later, they double dipped in Round 5 with Yahya Black. They subsequently released veteran Montravius Adams, possibly indicating Black will play nose tackle
But the Steelers still have Leal and Isaiahh Loudermilk in their defensive line room, as well as Dean Lowry and 2024 sixth-round pick Logan Lee. Lee spent his rookie season on the Reserve/Injured List, so this will be his first full opportunity to make the Steelers’ 53-man roster. Black will also have to earn a roster spot in what is becoming a crowded group

The PGA Tour is heading to Pennsylvania for the 2025 Truist Championship.
Formerly the Wells Fargo Championship, the Truist is at Philadelphia Cricket Club, as the normal host site, Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, is hosting the PGA Championship next week. Most of the PGA Tour's best are heading to Philly, including defending champion and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, though CJ Cup Byron Nelson winner Scottie Scheffler is taking a week off before the year's second major championship.
Being a signature event, there's a massive purse up for grabs this week.
The purse is $20 million, same as the other signature events on the PGA Tour.
The winner will receive $3.6 million, or 18 percent of the total purse. The top three finishers will clear seven figures. Last place earns $36,000.
Most of the Met Gala red-carpet looks are custom, worked on until the last minute, and provided courtesy of the designer. However, conglomerate-owned fashion houses have the infrastructure, money, and people to handle something of this scale. For independent designers, the stakes are higher — not only because most attendees choose to wear marquee brands, but because the process itself is more arduous, constrained by limited resources like time, money, and staff.
For Charlie Casely-Hayford of Casely-Hayford, the price of designing a famed fashion editor’s Met Gala look was equivalent to that of their highest level of bespoke tailoring — which costs around £5,500 (about $7,000). “As an independent brand, it is a significant outgoing,” he said. “When you’re doing things at speed, everything becomes more costly.” Still, the process opened up creative territory they hadn’t explored before. “Maybe I can write it off as R&D,” he added, half-joking.
“It’s a real investment, between materials, travel, labor, fittings, and everything else. We’re still calculating but we are very well within the five-figure range. And, for us, that’s all out of pocket. No sponsors,” said Anifa Mvuemba of Hanifa.
For independent designers, saying yes to the Met Gala means putting time, labor, and money on the line — often without knowing what the return will be. But each of them had their reasons for taking the risk.
Below, we spoke with the five independent Black designers — Saunders, Mvuemba, Dynasty and Soull Ogun of L’Enchanteur, and Casely-Hayford — about what this year’s Met Gala means for them and what it cost them to get to this milestone career moment.
Founded: 2018Based in: LondonDressing: One person for the red carpet, others for afterparty looks and surrounding events.
For London-based designer Saunders, the inspiration was dandyism, ranging from the 16th century up to the Congolese Sapeurs, a fashion subculture that emerged in the 19th century. Saunders is dressing one person on the red carpet, and various after-party looks, but this is only her second time doing so (the first time was in 2023, when Usher wore one of her looks.) With a focus on menswear, she brought her craft of hand-knit stitching to the look.
Founded: 2011Based in: Washington, D.C.Dressing: One person for the red carpet
The Congolese American designer Mvuemba — who is designing a Met Gala look for the first time — was also inspired by the Sapeurs, or “La Sape,” as she called the subculture. “It’s been a pillar of our culture — especially in how Black style shows up with pride, precision, and flair,” she said. “I wanted to honor that legacy while still celebrating the power and form of the women’s body.”

Mvuemba knows visibility can’t pay the bills — but it can shift a narrative. She’s hoping the Met leads to more than just press: “I want real investment. Real doors opening. Real belief.” This moment, for her, is a bet on long-term growth, not just attention.
Founded: 2017Based in: New YorkDressing: Six people; some will wearing be custom looks, while for others they will be customizing items they already have in their studio

The twin designers Dynasty and Soull Ogun founded their conceptual jewelry-and-clothing brand L’Enchaunteur in 2017
with Dynasty owning patternmaking and sewing and Soull owning casting
but this will be their first time creating pieces for the Met Gala
They were inspired by their father: “He came to the United States from Nigeria in the early ’70s
So we took those influences or those inspirations and were able to translate them into the things that we were doing anyway,” said Dynasty
the requests haven’t stopped — not even in the final stretch
With some requests coming in months in advance and others arriving just days out
the process has been a mix of custom and reworking existing pieces from their archive
“We have a substantial amount of pieces already made,” Dynasty said
“So if something works with a client’s look
it has to be really simple at this point.” They’ve done one fitting so far and have another coming up
with most designs requiring two to three in total
fabrics — to refine or elevate existing designs
“We’re trying to leave ourselves the brain space not to feel overwhelmed.”
They see the Met as a rare space where multiple worlds — fashion
That kind of convergence doesn’t happen anywhere else.”
This kind of moment pushes a brand creatively
it’s meant working with people who specialize in structural shaping and draping — techniques they’ve wanted to explore but hadn’t before now
It also opens up room to bring new collaborators into their orbit
“We’ve been able to expand employment and finally work on things we’ve had in mind for a while.”
Founded: 2009 Based in: LondonDressing: One person
Designer Casely-Hayford’s aesthetic has always been about honoring his father
who was known for blending traditional Savile Row tailoring with London streetwear
they founded their namesake menswear brand
and this will be the first time he is dressing anyone for the Met Gala
“The outfit reflects my dad’s era as well as mine
and the final garment reflects that,” he said
not monolithic; it can mean different things to different people
But I can think of a number of Black dandies I feel more closely aligned to for whom that isn’t so much the case
there is an understatement to their relationship with aesthetics
It was about us finding this kind of beauty in restraint.”
the process followed a traditional bespoke structure — just on a tighter timeline
He and his client and their stylist went through four fittings in London
starting with a loosely assembled version of the garment that could be pulled apart and reworked as needed
the look moved through a series of refinements: canvassing
all handled by a small team of specialists
“We’re doing it in about half the time we normally would,” he said
was compressed into six weeks and involved around 80 hours of labor
Fabric selection required its own round of trial and error with some materials reintroduced from earlier collections to get the right balance of structure and ease
where Casely-Hayford plans to hire a small team to help with any last-minute tweaks
when Black British designers had no visible path forward
“He pushed through so many barriers,” he said
during an exhibition that honors Black dandyism feels like a full-circle moment
“The Met marks the next chapter of progress — where other voices can finally break through.”
My dynasty league held its annual rookie draft over the weekend
I like to present the recap here for people to see how one group of 12 teams viewed the incoming class
If you have your own rookie draft coming up
I understand a lot of dynasty leagues are SuperFlex
with the result being that quarterbacks go early and often
there really wasn't a lot of love for the position
so tight ends get 1.5 points per reception
so theoretically you can start 3 tight ends per week
rookie tight end Brock Bowers was the 8th-highest scoring non-quarterback
I mention this in part so I'll catch less heat for my first-round pick
If you have the top pick and for some inexplicable reason don't want to select Jeanty
trade that pick for a bounty you'll surely get
but that probably only means he'll be more of a centerpiece -- runs
There are three reasonable candidates for the No
But Hampton is the other clear workhorse back in this class and shouldn't take long to push Najee into a secondary role (one-year contract for him
McMillan and Hunter can and will be debated
Hunter is the unicorn who I'd pick if I knew he'd play full-time as a wide receiver
McMillan doesn't have as good a quarterback
1 right away and the kind of guy who will make Bryce Young look better
I am aware the Jaguars say Hunter will start out with the wide receivers
I think you only trade up to take him at No
2 overall if you're planning on playing him both ways
and that has to mean he'll be held out of some offensive packages
That mild concern from a fantasy perspective with Hunter
he goes to a team with little else at the position
and my current TEs are Dallas Goedert and Cole Kmet
which was fine last year but not so much this year
and since I have Kmet I suppose Loveland would be the wiser pick
Ian said here the other day he'd give the edge to Loveland (younger
The lone negative I see with him is Chicago's crowded receiver situation
and the fact that we know Warren can be a featured receiver because he's done it
But a tough choice and I'll continue to second-guess
I like Henderson and Judkins as the next two backs
Henderson should push Rhamondre aside by next year
Just kind of looks like a poor man's Najee
they've sent some good wideouts to the NFL lately right?) and the landing spot
I also like Golden but would not have taken him there (Packers are fickle with wideouts and have so damn many of them); I was pretty pleased to get Harvey
Should be Sean Payton's starter pretty quickly
I was hoping Burden would make it to me at 2.04
Chicago's crowded receiver situation has been noted but I think they'll find ways to get him touches as both receiver and out of the backfield
Love Rome Odunze but being the wide receiver the new coaching staff presumably wanted counts for something
Skattebo a big producer at Arizona State and only has Tyrone Tracy to beat out
Fourth-round draft capital at least suggests some NFL reservations about his future as a starter
Chalk pick would have been Harris over Bech
But I'm not sure how many wide receivers the Chargers can support and just like Bech's game a little better
More than one Cooper Kupp comparison (good blocker
Also a sucker for the feel-good story about him writing a letter to his older brother (killed in the New Orleans terror incident on New Year's Day)
but in dynasty I do tend to favor players I have a soft spot for
I was originally picking at 2.12 in this draft
Three players I definitely would have taken there -- Tuten
the combine star and Jacksonville's running back pick
who just broke a lot of receiving records for the position
who might be New England's long-term top wideout -- were drafted right before me
so I traded out of the pick for an extra third
Williams was literally the last player I liked a lot
And the other QBs drafted were third-rounders
but New Orleans has an old starter and Chicago doesn't necessarily have a guy the new coaching staff likes
he was taken almost three rounds after the same team took Judkins
Bryant was discussed here in a story by Ian
Sean Payton compared him to Michael Thomas
which is certainly a plus but also the kind of thing you might say about a wide receiver who's slow
But Denver has Courtland Sutton and otherwise an open starting spot
There are a multitude of wide receivers in this draft named Jaylin or Jayden or Jalen
Three tight ends who were selected I haven't mentioned yet
Ferguson (Rams) could replace Tyler Higbee a year from now
while Arroyo (Seahawks) could do the same with Noah Fant
but would have taken Fannin in the 2nd and considered one of the others in the third
Who is the lowest-drafted quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl
Kurt Warner wasn’t drafted at all; here we’re looking for a quarterback who was drafted

Content available exclusively to purchasers of a Fantasy Index Magazine:
My dad and I have subscribed since I was 10 years old and I am 38 now
You guys are great - if you look at my account
I believe I have been a subscriber for around 20 years
a few years ago a couple of other owners found the same publication (they didnʼt get it from me; I always disguised the sheets while at the draft!)
I have purchased your magazine since my first fantasy football season ever 12 season ago and love the insight you offer
I look forward to many many more years of enjoying your subscription
The magazine is exactly the same as last year
we have a chance to repeat in the 33rd year of the NWFFL
we devised a clever way to use one of your lists to draft a team for an absent owner
received my copy over the weekend and I think it's the best work you guys have done (I've been reading your publication since 1988)
The writing is terrific and full of good humor
along with more substance than anybody else has
I keep the Fantasy Football Index handy and refer back to your preseason reports throughout the season to help me evaluate roster moves in every format
This week I'm in two championship games and a semifinal
Thanks for another great season of Fantasy Index
you avoid group-think and form your own opinions
and you've always been a cut above the rest
Thank you for all you do and what your team does
Been playing since mid 90s and your mag has been there every year
The mailer I get with the questions on the front is what I consider the beginning of the fantasy football season
I write a weekly column for the newspaper I work at and always appreciate the work you put in to produce as much as you do
Just a fan saying thanks and will keep up with you and the site through the season
A little feedback from a long time customer
Our fantasy pool is entering its 25th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years
I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4th
Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used
Having it in a format that allows me to work the forecasts to match our scoring system and then receive updates as the season approaches is invaluable
Whoever your sources are for the forecasts are the best
I did receive the updated draft ranking from you guys in plenty of time for my draft that night
My draft report gave me an A+ and predicted me to go 14-0 and win my league
I just want to say thank you for the excellent customer service that your company provided me
When I first started playing fantasy football more than 15 years ago
I used to buy as many fantasy football magazines as I could find
It wasnʼt long before I only purchased Fantasy Football Index each year
well written fantasy football magazine on the market
I almost always rank in the top three in my fantasy football leagues
Thank you to you and all of your great team
we have placed in the top three 9 times winning it all 4 times
I have been a customer of yours for many years
but I think your magazine with all of the good stuff has been a real contributing factor
Will be a customer until the time I can't read anymore
I just wanted to send everyone at Fantasy Football Index an apology
I've protected my source of information and have gone out of my way to hide Fantasy Football Index from my leagues prying eyes
I've won championships in leagues and money playing Daily Fantasy and your Training Camp updates are the highlight of my summer and a recurring order for me every single season
I just wanted to Thank You and everyone there (customer service

You are appreciated and valued part of my Fantasy Football Operations department even if i never speak your name in fear that others in my league will discover the wondrous bounty of knowledge contained in your pages…
I wanted to send a quick note and thank you for your great magazine
has allowed me to win my league 3 years in a row
but it is those all important bragging rights that really make it fun
I epically enjoyed this last issue because you included all the covers for the past 30 years
All I have to do is read and then plug and play
thanks again for doing all the work so I don't have to
I will be continue to purchase your magazine
although I don't like to give away my secret
I typically don't write emails to magazines
I wanted to let you know I finished my season going 16-0 winning my league
breaking every record in our 19 year history along the way
A special thank you to FI for the insightful knowledge as it provided me much help along the way
I got laughed at by a few people at the draft but they're not laughing now
I'm leading the league in record (8-1) and PF thus far
And a side note… we've got a re-draft 16-team
20 players drafted league (drafting water boys by the 17th round) that I've won 2 years in a row
Nobody's ever done that in 21 years… using your cheat sheet
it's an old school league that used to draft out of piles of magazines
This is my ninth year competing with my two very savey adult children and their 11 regulars to make it a 14 team draft with a $200 bid limit
Your SuperFanatic package has put me into the 6 team play- offs 4 out of the 8 years and there is no way I could compete with these guys without my cheat sheets
They still have no idea how I can be so lucky every year :-) Cheaters do prosper!!!
I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service
I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake
Your customer service person was very kind
helpful and took care of the issue immediately
I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer
I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson
The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick
He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be
"that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher
dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries
That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title
I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row

He got divorced and moved to Texas for work
and he’s got two teenage boys who chose to move to Texas with him after the divorce
They’re in high school and they’re friendly to me
but it’s very obvious that they’re spies for their mom
I caught one of the boys FaceTiming with his mom
but his camera was turned toward me so she could get a good look at me
The boys and their mama are not the problem
She was living in Virginia with her second husband
I told my husband that I was not going to marry him if he allowed his mother to live with us
He tried to sneak it in during our home search by looking for homes with a nice bedroom on the first floor
she has a little studio apartment in a building about three miles from our home
She loves to mention my husband’s ex-wife to the boys and make sure I can hear her conversation
She even cut her eyes at me once or twice to engage me
My husband recently gave her a key to our house and the code to the alarm "in case of emergency." She told me that now she can come check on her grandsons whenever she wants to
I had the alarm code changed—and I’m thinking about rekeying all the locks
My husband knows that his tiny Caribbean mama is a pest
Why is he so concerned about her feelings and not mine

Home/Pet NewsChow Chow Pup Looks So Much Like a Stuffed Teddy Bear People Can’t Get Over ItThis Chow Chow doesn’t even look real
I can confirm that all puppies are adorable — truly
I've never seen a baby dog that I didn't instantly fall in love with
But even those of us who have puppy blinders on can admit that there are some who are truly on another level
and the one in the TikTok video below most certainly applies
Because when it comes to this Chow Chow puppy
it's hard to tell if she's a dog or a teddy bear…

@bear_chocolatechowchow shared this video of their family's new puppy
her resemblance to a teddy bear is unmistakable
“I could never say no to a teddy bear like this,” and that basically sums it up
From what I can tell after watching the videos they've shared of the new siblings together so far
it looks like they're already getting along just fine
Can we talk about how cute they are playing and cuddling together?

It's always an adjustment to add a new puppy to the family
Bear seems to be made for the big brother life
She might be a bit messy when eating her treats
but she'll get a little better at that as she gets older
I have a feeling that her adorable face will make it a lot easier for her humans to clean up after her while she learns and grows

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang may be a billionaire because of his 3.4% stake in Nvidia
but he only recently got a raise — after making the same salary for the past decade
The 62-year-old chief executive now makes 166 times more in overall compensation than the median Nvidia employee
Nvidia's compensation committee noted in the document that this was "Huang's first base salary increase in 10 years" and that the move "was appropriate" considering the base salary for executives at comparable companies. For example, AMD CEO Lisa Su made a base salary of $1.26 million effective July 2024

Huang's total compensation for the fiscal year 2025 was $49.9 million
This figure includes the $6 million Huang received as part of a non-equity incentive plan
The filing noted that the median Nvidia employee made $301,233 in fiscal year 2025
for a CEO to median employee pay ratio of 166:1
Another SEC filing submitted last week by Google's parent company, Alphabet, shows that the typical Google employee makes a comparable amount
Google CEO Sundar Pichai makes 32 times more than a mid-level employee at the company
with an annual compensation of $10.7 million last year
Huang's overall compensation has been steadily rising, even if his base salary remained stagnant for a decade. He made $34.2 million in fiscal year 2024 and $21.4 million in fiscal year 2023

The theme of tonight’s event is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’
The 2025 Met Gala is only hours away, with celebrities gearing up for the biggest night in fashion in New York City
Vogue’s red carpet live stream hosts Teyana Taylor
and Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim are expected to make the scene as well
Wintour herself is the one who handpicks the guest list
from designers and artists to actors and athletes
this doesn’t mean that celebrities attend the gala for free
An individual ticket for the event is $75,000, the Met confirmed to CBS News’ MoneyWatch
This is the same price a ticket to the event cost last year
tables at the gala start for $350,000 each
tables are purchased by leading fashion houses
who invite stars to the event and dress them for the occasion
Wintour decides which of the celebrities chosen by the designers get to attend the event. And the Vogue editor is famously very picky when making her guest list. Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) claimed that designers have previously purchased a table and had their intended celebrity guest replaced at the request of Wintour
From the Seventies to the Eighties, the cost for one ticket was as low as $1,000 a piece, according to WWD
Attendees will arrive outside the museum to walk the carpeted steps in custom and haute couture garments that fit the dress code
According to Vogue, the “Tailored for You” is “purposefully designed to provide guidance and incite creative interpretation,” meaning guests should show up in garments that reflect their individual tastes and style.
