A total of 78 emergency lock operations were carried out in 10 days with a total of 72 vessels that had been stuck along the rivers cleared to continue their journeys
WSA reports it was a Herculean task that required cooperation and coordination
The lock gates were destroyed when a ship failed to stop during a locking operation on December 8
A temporary solution to free the trapped vessels was worked out
but it required manually placing for each locking operation the removable dam beams which are normally only used to seal and drain the lock chamber for maintenance.
It required 192 hours of continuous operation in all weather conditions with the first vessel passing through the lock on December 16
The beams with the help of a crane were placed over 1,000 times and chain hooks were attacked over 4,000 times
Divers had to enter the chamber 1,840 times to hook the chains into the eyelets
the WSA reports a total of 70 ships had passed through the lock
The final two vessels had scheduled their transit for today
Sunisha arrived at the lock around 0800 local time and when the fog lifted it made the transit
Three hours later a river cargo vessel Tunica became the last to leave the lock
No vessels had been able to use the lock to enter Luxembourg and France since the accident
the Saar and the German Moselle are completely empty of cargo ships
or passenger ships,” WSA reported today
Only a few ships which spend the winter on the rivers remain
The lock is now closed with the beams to be set into place and the chamber drained
and new concrete poured to repair the damage
Two gate frames that were manufactured in 2005 need to be prepared and panels installed plus four new neck bearing blocks also have to be manufactured
The timeline now calls for moving all the components to the lock at Müden on January 15 and then starting to reassemble the operation
The lock is now closed until the repairs can be completed
Steelmaker ArcelorMittal with operations in Luxembourg was forced to plan alternate routes to move its material
The authorities in Luxembourg worked with the company to temporarily change rules for the transit of heavy goods by road
The Müden lock provides a vital link for the movement of goods
and passengers coming from the Rhine and traveling into Western Germany

ShareThe ship which crashed into a lock gate on the Moselle river in December
was sailing on autopilot at the time of the accident.Details of the investigation into the cause of the crash have been released by the Koblenz public prosecutor’s office
and reveal the ship was sailing on autopilot at 12.2km/h at the time of the accident
Sailing with an autopilot system is permitted on the Moselle as long as a ship’s captain is able to intervene in the steering process at any time
“Why the ship’s captain did not intervene is the subject of further investigations,” the office said in its statement to German news agency dpa
No evidence was found that the ship’s captain consumed alcohol or drugs
while a report obtained showed that there was no damage to the ship’s engine or controls
Ships have only been able to travel through the repaired lock again since Saturday

His reactions throughout her performance were great
as well as the compliment he dropped when she finished.
Mandy Muden's qualifiers performance showed off her skills as a magician, but I also would have believed it if she said that she was there as a comedian or a quick-change artist. She combined a number of talents, and found time to banter with Simon Cowell about hitting the town together
It really has to be seen at least once (or multiple times) to really be appreciated
Simon Cowell's reactions really were the best.
I also appreciated that Cowell added some background to Mandy Muden that AGT viewers likely didn't know
I'm not saying the magic's the best I've ever seen
but I have seen Mandy on the British show [Britain's Got Talent] before
And what I will say about Mandy is that Mandy..

so the fact that you're here in Hollywood tonight
The competition is stiff as the days count down to the finale
so seeing her get the sincere "bravo" from Cowell after flirting with him as part of the act was a nice way to end her segment.

A crisis committee on 11 December decided that ships would be channelled individually through the damaged lock in a process that takes hours per ship. The local waterways and shipping authority (WSA) had said the operation would be complete by New Year's Eve.
“Everything has been completed,” said Ulrich Zwinge of the WSA on Friday, with 72 barges transported to safety during the morning.
The Müden lock was severely damaged in a collision involving a cargo ship on 8 December. Since then, shipping traffic on the Moselle has been at a standstill.
Luxembourg steelmaker ArcelorMittal said it was planning alternative routes to transport goods with Luxembourg temporarily changing rules for the transport of heavy goods by road to prevent further backlogs
Preparations for the repair of the lock are now underway
This includes setting up the construction site and draining the damaged lock chamber
“The work itself will then start in the new year,” he said
A new lock gate will be installed at the end of January
It is currently being prepared at a building yard in Trier and will then be brought to Müden by ship
The plan is to put the lock back into regular operation earlier than expected on 1 February
Experts had initially assumed that works could take until the end of March next year

the last remaining ship stuck on the Moselle was channelled through a specially-made lock
has been damaged during a collision caused by a cargo ship
Preparations for the renovations are underway
the repair works are planned to start in the new year
in order for regular traffic to pick up again on 1 February 2025
The German Mosel-Saar-Lahn Navigation Office confirmed that operations on this key waterway will remain suspended until at least March 2025
carrying approximately 1,500 tonnes of scrap metal
and the vessel itself sustained no significant material damage
The fire brigade successfully intervened to prevent oil leakage
and confirmed no water had leaked onto the ship
The circumstances leading to the collision are still under investigation
Initial reports suggest that the lock was not fully prepared for the ship's entry
and the vessel was unauthorized to proceed at the time of the incident
Repairs to the lock are expected to take several months
with the earliest completion projected for late March 2025
the disruption has stranded around 70 vessels traveling along the Moselle toward the Rhine
Repair work on the damaged lock on the Moselle near Müden
held discussions with German Minister of Transport
Shipping traffic is now expected to resume by early February
a significant improvement from the initial estimate of late March
The blockage of the lock has caused an estimated economic loss of several hundred million euros
according to politicians and logistics companies
The operation has become increasingly efficient
with each lock cycle now taking approximately three hours
27 ships have already passed through the lock
Minister Backes also stated that all 74 ships stranded at the site since the incident are expected to be able to continue their journey toward the Rhine by the end of the year

Hedgehogs are some of the most adorable animals on the planet
Something about being pokey and therefore somewhat forbidden makes them even more cuddly
because it kind of seems like they need it.
They make sounds that sort of sound like he or she is whimpering or crying
so make sure to ask your vet if that is something you should be concerned about.
Many hedgehog owners report that they often see their hedgies act out while they sleep
sort of like a dog who appears to be dreaming about chasing something
