The BWF World Tour Super 300 event is a chance for Loh to get back to winning ways
with the Singaporean having not won on tour since claiming the men's singles title at last season's Madrid Spain Masters in March 2024
He will face a qualifier in the round of 32, while Chinese Taipei's Su Li-Yang or Malaysia's Cheam Jun Wei await in the second round.
Compatriot Jason Teh is the other seeded player in his section of the draw, and could be a quarter-final opponent should Loh get to the last eight.

Komatsu PC700 hydraulic excavator with special boom conversion excels in raw gravel extraction
WHEN German construction company Kann GmbH Baustoffwerke required a customized hydraulic excavator to extract gravel from deep underwater deposits
equipped with a long boom and 3D machine guidance
The excavator has significantly increased productivity and safety at the Kann site
surpassing its target production of 1,000 tonnes of gravel per shift
The production of concrete products is the core business of Kann GmbH Baustoffwerke
a family business founded in 1927 with 18 locations throughout Germany
The company obtains some of the raw materials it processes itself
with around 500,000 tonnes of raw gravel extracted annually at its site in Mülheim-Kärlich
The most recent challenge at this site was the replacement of its more than 40-year-old scraper bucket
with gravel deposits up to 12m below the water surface
places high demands on the successor machine
which is required to handle both the excavation and loading of the raw gravel
Komatsu sales partners BRR Baumaschinen Rhein-Ruhr offered a customized PC700LC-11E0 hydraulic excavator that was well suited to the application
including the lifting cylinders from the Komatsu factory in England
provides the necessary stability and lifting power
The steel construction of the boom and arm was customized by a third-party supplier so that the required length can be achieved when digging to reach the gravel deep below the waterline
The excavator also has a hydraulic ditching bucket and is equipped with GPS and Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance
BRR’s subsidiary AP Deutschland installed a special solution to protect the sensors and connections
‘The bucket’s movement options save us a lot of time
as we don’t have to constantly move the excavator
We currently only need to move it about once per shift,’ said technical manager Frank Hergenroether
‘Another advantage of the excavator is that it is still very mobile despite its size
This is not only relevant in this gravel pit
as these areas are becoming ever smaller and more urbanized,’ continued Mr Hergenroether
which has been in operation with Kann since April 2024
is expected to produce 250,000 tonnes per year
‘The decisive factor in our decision to purchase the Komatsu hydraulic excavator was that
the boom does not rest on the chassis to achieve the required depth
and can also maintain a safe distance from the bank
BRR were competent partners right from the start
understanding and realizing our requirements,’ explained Mr Hergenroether
Machine operator René Münch sees further advantages: ‘The lifting power speaks for itself
the comfort during operation is impressive thanks to the superior cab suspension and low noise level
all machine operators were trained to work safely on the excavator and were ready for action.’
He added: ‘The length of the arm and how quickly we were able to achieve the required performance was surprising
The target of being able to extract at least 1,000 tonnes of gravel per shift has already been exceeded.’
‘This is also thanks to the detailed on-site instruction and training provided by BRR and Komatsu on delivery,’ added plant manager Andreas Müller
‘The increasing performance curve of the employees with the new PC700LC-11E0 is clearly visible.’

The confined space within the plant's reactor building created logistical challenges
especially when it came to the dismantling of large components
developed a dismantling concept that met both the stringent safety standards of a plant undergoing decommissioning and RWE's overall schedule for the process
Special portal wire saws manufactured by HILTI were adapted and further developed by Bilfinger for the special challenges of being used in a nuclear power plant
Technical adaptations were carried out for the wire storage, the expansion of the cooling system and modification of the decontamination properties
the two saws could be used as cold cutters in the control area of the plant
This meant RWE was spared cost-intensive conversion measures
as well as costly special transports to an offsite location for dismantling
require continuous close coordination with the customer
The activities were carried out in-situ and at the same time as RWE's own dismantling activities
The dismantled shells were certified for disposal in the conventional recycling system
The inner workings of the steam generators - comprising 16,000 tubes each - were packaged as radioactive waste in approved containers
These will be transported to an interim storage facility next year before they are sent to the final storage facility at Schacht Konrad
Construction of Mülheim-Kärlich in Rhineland-Palatinate started in 1975
but the 1219 MWe pressurised water reactor was not able to commence nuclear trial operations until 1986
Formal defects led to its shutdown in September 1988 after just 13 months of power operations
A subsequent legal dispute lasting several years showed that it was neither technical nor safety defects that had led to the shutdown of the plant
The Singaporean is the fourth seed in the men's draw for the BWF World Tour Super 300 event in Mülheim an der Ruhr from 7–11 March

Loh had only won five out of 15 matches before the German Open
crashing out six times in the first round in BWF World Tour events
the German Open could mark the start of a run as he hopes to climb back into the Top 10 in the world
Axelsen had to dig down deep to eliminate Jason Gunawan (Hong Kong, China) 11-21, 21-13, 21-9 and will now face France's Toma Junior Popov in the semis
top seed Yeo Jia Min will take on Mia Blichfeldt (Denmark) while Nguyễn Thùy Linh (Vietnam) will take on Gunji Riko (Japan)
and will play two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in the German Open decider
but he took a big step towards ending that wretched run of form with a comprehensive win against Japan's Takahashi Koo
Loh, the second seed in Mülheim, took the match 21-13, 21-14 in 46 minutes to set up a clash with his best friend on tour, two-time Olympic champion and top seed Viktor Axelsen
And Loh might have watched on with interest as the Dane was taken the distance by Toma Junior Popov of France in his semi-final
attritional affair – having also been forced to three games in the quarters
There was more to celebrate for Singaporean fans on Saturday
as top seed Yeo Jia Min reached the women's singles final
beating Denmark's fourth-seeded Mia Blichfeldt
22-20 victory continues a strong season for Yeo who
aside from a rare first-round exit at the Indonesia Masters

1 seed Lee Zii Jia suffers shock elimination from German Open 2023The Malaysian star started brightly in Muelheim an der Ruhr before falling to a thrilling three-game defeat against Chinese Taipei's Chia Hao Lee
The World No. 4 from Malaysia initially looked in dominating form at the BWF World Tour Super 300 match Muelheim an der Ruhr, wrapping up the first game in just 15 mins with one streak of nine-consecutive points.
But that seemed to wake up his opponent from Chinese Taipei, who took an early lead in the second game before Lee Zii Jia battled back to 8-8.
The lead then exchanged hands several times with neither man able to win more than two-consecutive points until the scores were 20-20. Chia Hao Lee then found the precision to seal it 22-21 and level the contest at one game each.
The third game followed suit in another brilliant contest that once again hit 20-20. Lee Zii Jia did have an opportunity to take the victory at 21-20, before Chia Hao Lee reeled off three-consecutive points to take a well-deserved win in 57 minutes.
Next up for the Chinese Taipei shuttler is a quarter-final clash against Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, while the top seed is left to rue his opportunity to make a first quarter-final in six World Tour events.
Elsewhere for Malaysia, Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 gold medallist Goh Jin Wei was knocked out of the women's singles by Thai eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong,21-13, 21-10.
It was better news for mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, who beat sixth-seeded Seo Seungh Jae and Chae Yu Jung of the Republic of Korea.

digital environment that allows much of the world’s population to enjoy the benefits of exchanging a wide variety of information for commercial
This connectivity also spawned the vision of a smart community—a community in which information technology (IT) plays a major role in the decision-making process and provides an improved quality of life for its residents
particularly improvements in computer speed
and the integrating capabilities of GIS as a platform
is transforming the smart community from a theoretical concept into reality
World population is predicted to be 9.7 billion people by 2050
and two-thirds of those people will live in cities
This huge increase in population will significantly strain the services required by urban dwellers
350 million people are expected to move into cities during the next two decades
undersecretary for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs
while also creating tremendous opportunities,” said Hongbo
Population growth necessitates increased public transportation capacity
The common thread linking these services is the need for integrated planning and analysis
Cities have long suffered from a lack of comprehensive planning
Ongoing efforts undertaken throughout the world to better understand the complex dynamics of urban life seek to create sustainable cities in the future
Europe’s largest application-focused research organization
has analyzed the expansion of population worldwide and its impact on resources
Its research is used to develop solutions for the problems inherent in unsustainable growth and apply these lessons to future development
the society launched Morgenstadt: City of the Future
The goal of this initiative is to develop and implement technologies for future cities that are climate adapted
and Tokyo to determine sustainability best practices and their impact on the quality of life based on emerging technologies and new business models
By analyzing the six cities on-site in-depth and from the viewpoint of different disciplines
the Fraunhofer city teams identified the main action fields for sustainable development for each of the six cities
These action fields show how these cities are addressing challenges and opportunities to better understand strategies and priorities adopted by the six cities
Eighty-three defined key action fields for sustainable development were represented in the Morgenstadt model’s core
the society then launched City Lab to test the use of different innovative information and communication technologies to determine their effectiveness in helping the city of the future be more livable and resilient
Fundamental to the project is the society’s belief that interdisciplinary collaboration lies at the heart of urban innovation
Participating cities are implementing projects that include the analysis of the link between sustainable mobility and energy consumption and the use of sensors to collect data in real time for the development of data-driven services
Cologne is a major German city on the Rhine River
Its history stretches back 2,000 years to its founding as a Roman outpost in the Rhineland
the city was selected to implement a Morgenstadt Phase 2 project that examined the best methods to revitalize the aging industrial
and residential district of Mülheim Süd and transform it into a new and sustainable community in the next 20 years
The proposed design was developed by a consortium of architects and urban planners
which were selected through a competition organized by the City of Cologne
and recreational areas within a green infrastructure to provide a safer
and healthier environment for those living and working in the area
“We used GIS technologies combined with geodesign planning methodology to support the implementation of a holistic approach to sustainable urban development,” said Schaller
“This also includes an emphasis on green infrastructure
which is a requirement of our national government
Our model follows the guidelines of Cologne’s smart city initiative
within the framework of the Fraunhofer Society’s Morgenstadt project.”
Many datasets were needed by PSU to complete the project
The City of Cologne provided a digital terrain model (DTM); digital surface model (DSM); cadastral data; high-resolution orthophotos; aerial photos; Building Energy Specification Table (BEST) and Energy Performance Certificates on the buildings that are currently in an old residential quarter of the project area; master plan document; development plans; environmental data; and models for flooding
“Other input included lidar elevation data and a BIM [Building Information Modeling] data
all of which we integrated with CityEngine to develop our 3D model of a redeveloped Mülheim Süd,” said Schaller
“Including the BIM with CityEngine allows architects to align their design with that of the planning engineers’ work
the 3D model of the entire district can be used for the city planning process
and energy and environmental modeling.” PSU used these datasets and models
combined with the plans and sketches of buildings
and other features proposed by the architects and urban planners
to create detailed 3D models to support a new master plan of a revitalized Mülheim Süd
These models take into consideration several environmental factors
Because Cologne is on a major European river
Using CityEngine to model existing flood data provided the visualization of flood inundation levels in Mülheim Süd
“The process was fairly straight forward,” said Schaller
“We first created water surface raster files from water level data and the DTM
The raster files were then vectorized and tiled
This allowed us to include them as layers in CityEngine
We could then display potential flooding at various levels and its impact on the streets and buildings in Mülheim Süd.”
Reducing sound levels in cities is another major consideration when improving the quality of life for residents and workers
Together with Esri partner n-Sphere from Switzerland
PSU spatially modeled potential noise levels in Mülheim Süd using CityEngine and ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst with the 2D noise level data provided by the city
Three-dimensional noise models were created from the 2D data and used to determine the impact that noise would have on specified areas of the previously created building facades and how sound would resonate throughout the area
it is possible to determine how many people would be affected by the different noise levels in different development scenarios
Energy conservation is also an important factor in a smart community
For each building within a selected district quarter in Mülheim Süd
a BEST table was created by the SmartCity Cologne initiative
This is required by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 plan for promoting low energy consumption and indicates the building’s energy needs for heating
Each 3D building model in the selected quarter was color-coded by its actual energy consumption and its potential energy saving in the future scenarios
Central to the SmartCity Cologne initiative is citizen participation. An online citizen participation app was developed by PSU and the company 52oNorth that gives residents the opportunity to evaluate and comment on the redevelopment proposals. It will be available soon at the SmartCity Cologne website
This helps the city engage with its residents as it continues its smart community development
“3D GIS technology is a powerful design platform to support the planning and implementation of sustainable urban development,” concluded Schaller
“It is a very cost-effective method because 3D municipal designs can be efficiently created
and changes to those designs can be easily made if required by city planners
the workflow and tools we have developed can be employed by other communities by using their own data models for noise levels

the Vallourec steel pipe manufacturer announced what thousands of its workers had long feared
which produces seamless tubes mainly for the gas and oil industry
is closing its plants in Düsseldorf-Rath and Mülheim/Ruhr
destroying about 2,400 jobs at these two sites alone
Production of seamless pipes in Western Europe is to be halted completely
About 1,650 workers are affected in Düsseldorf and 750 in Mülheim
the closings will hit the many employees in subcontracting firms
The two plants being closed in Germany used to belong to the Mannesmannröhren-Werke
The Düsseldorf plant in the Rath district has existed since 1899
while the Mülheim plant has existed since 1966 and is the second largest industrial employer in the city after the Siemens Energy plant
The Mannesmann Group was taken over and broken up by Vodafone in 2000
A cooperation between the tube works and Vallourec has existed since 1997
when the joint venture Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes (V&M Tubes) was formed
the German corporate unit became Vallourec Deutschland GmbH
The corporation owns 50 production facilities in over 20 countries with 20,000 employees; its headquarters are in France
The closure of the factories and the destruction of many thousands more jobs in subcontracting firms are part of a worldwide rationalisation programme
as is currently being prepared and implemented in many corporations
Global corporations are reacting to the international economic crisis and the growing competition on the world market by lowering labour costs or relocating production to low-wage countries with the lowest social standards
the international banks and big investors set the tone
Production is trimmed for profit and increasing shareholder value
The pandemic and NATO’s proxy war against Russia serve as a pretext for a frontal attack on the rights and living conditions of workers
who are paying with job losses and inflation for massive rearmament spending
war and the enormous enrichment of the corporations and the super-rich
The trade unions have nothing to counter this attack except feigned indignation and toothless protests
They act as accomplices of corporate management and offer them “alternative rationalisation programmes.” They want to prove that
exploitation can also be drastically intensified on the home soil
This can be seen all too clearly in the case of Vallourec
The closure of factories in Germany also means the closure of the plant in Saint-Saulve in northern France
where the tubes produced in Düsseldorf and Mülheim are reworked
which were gradually cut with the help of the trade unions
Production there is to be moved to Aulnoye in France
on condition that the company is then profitable and that appropriate sales markets are developed
the company wants to introduce “additive manufacturing” and install robots to produce steel parts in small batches or
Vallourec also wants to rationalise its research and development department by merging it into one site in Aulnoye
About 60 other jobs are to be cut at the group’s headquarters near Paris
300 jobs will go in France as part of a plan to “safeguard employment.”
2,950 jobs will be lost because of the measures now decided by the Vallourec board
The number of employees will drop from 17,000 to 14,000
the company is building a new production facility in Brazil to supply markets in the Middle East and a plant in Ohio in the US to supply drilling sites for the extraction of shale oil and gas (fracking) in the North American market
Workers at the Vallourec plants have been concerned about their jobs and livelihoods for months
management had announced the sale of the tube plants in Mülheim and Düsseldorf
which had accumulated losses of €700 million since 2015
Some financial investors had showed interest in the plants but did not want to pay anything for them
they demanded sums running into hundreds of millions of euros for the takeover
for company pensions and other company commitments
Vallourec CEO Philippe Guillemot justified the closures by saying they had not found a buyer for the plants with a sustainable plan; to avoid further losses
He claimed that sites in Western Europe were no longer profitable in the face of competition from Eastern European countries with much lower wage and production costs in the manufacture of pipes for the Middle East or other regions
Just two days before the closure was announced
IG Metall organised a convoy of about a thousand workers from Germany to Paris to protest in front of Vallourec headquarters
Instead of organising joint action with French workers who are also losing their jobs
IG Metall officials delivered pathetic funeral speeches and bemoaned the owners’ profit lust and the king-of-the-castle stance of the decision-makers
The union bureaucrats’ cowardly prattle is designed to spread hopelessness and demoralisation
The globalisation of production and the systematic division and blackmail of the workers means the trade union policy of “social partnership” (i.e.
collaborating with the employers) is proving completely bankrupt
the works councils and trade union officials try to undercut the extreme exploitation in the low-wage countries by proposing their own rationalisation measures and social cuts
they set in motion a downward spiral in which the corporations and their shareholders earn handsomely
IG Metall and the works council had actively supported the downsizing plans from the start
They even commissioned a consultancy firm to draw up their own continuation concept for the plants
which they presented as an alternative to the sale planned by management
production at the German plants was to be oriented towards future markets around hydrogen
which was also supported by the German management
as Labour Director Herbert Schaaff told the WAZ
still envisaged the elimination of 700 to 800 jobs
while at the same time increasing turnover by 10 percent within the next five years
that “even this plan is now wastepaper,” is pure hogwash
It merely served as a stalling tactic to prevent a fight for the unconditional preservation of jobs
This is known from numerous similar cases in the past
which at their peak employed 20,000 workers
were shut down in a similar step-by-step method with the collaboration of IG Metall
Anger boiled over at a works meeting of both plants held on Friday in the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf
which had travelled from Paris to justify the closure decision
was greeted with a sustained shrill chorus of whistles; the CEO’s speech was constantly interrupted by boos and heckling
and the management left the hall through the back exit under police protection
it is completely unclear how production will continue at the two sites until the end of next year in this emotionally charged situation,” commented broadcaster WDR
“It seems possible that there will be a strike.”
Industrial action—a strike or occupation of the plants—is indeed the only way to defend jobs
But that requires a complete break with IG Metall and its works council representatives
Even if they feel forced to organise a few more symbolic protests
they will do everything to stifle any serious fight
The Ruhr area—from Dortmund (Hoesch) to Bochum (Opel) to Duisburg-Rheinhausen (Krupp)—is full of industrial ruins where tens of thousands once worked
Many had fought bitterly to defend their jobs
but the IG Metall and its works council representatives sabotaged workers’ resistance each time
The most famous case is that of Oliver Burkhard
who headed the IG Metall district of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2007 to 2013 before moving to the board of steelmakers thyssenkrupp as personnel director on a salary of millions
Burkhard has had another job: he remains a board member of thyssenkrupp and additionally now heads the defence company thyssenkrupp Marine Systems
Europe’s leading systems supplier for submarines and naval vessels
all that could be heard from union officials and politicians was the usual demoralised whining
The director of IG Metall Düsseldorf-Neuss
told dpa that they had tried everything to follow the sales process
A continuation concept had also been developed with the works council and a consulting firm
told WAZ: “There is a lot of consternation here
It’s really hard how Vallourec treats the people here,” he said
and the workforce had put everything on the line
Workers must reject this cowardly talk with contempt
It is necessary to break out of the straitjacket of the trade unions and organise independently of IG Metall and the works councils in rank-and-file action committees
The first task of these action committees is to make contact with colleagues in France
Scotland and other countries to organise joint industrial action to defend all jobs unconditionally
The closure and retrenchment plans of Vallourec and the unions must not be accepted
The interests and needs of the workers must come before the company’s drive for profits
it is necessary to build the Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei (SGP
Socialist Equality Party) and organise this struggle based on an international socialist programme
It supports the building of independent action committees and helps to make international contact with workers in other countries and other factories also affected by closure

The Malaysian is the top seed in the men's draw for the BWF Super 300 event in Mülheim from 7–12 March
The world number 4 will look to get his season back on the right track
having not made it past the round of 16 at each of his last five World Tour events dating back to 2022
That poor run of form has seen the Malaysian lose his world number 2 ranking
but with none of the three players in front of him competing in Mülheim
He enters the tournament having won two and lost one of his three singles matches at the recent 2023 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship
at which Malaysia was eliminated in the quarter-finals
The 26-year-old's top seeding means he will open his campaign against a qualifier
before a potential banana skin against another former world number 2 who has struggled recently in Denmark's Anders Antonsen
Thailand's world number 7 Kunlavut Vitidsarn is the second seed in the other half of the draw.
Mülheim is seven hours behind Malaysian time

The middle-sized town of Mülheim an der Ruhr (population 170,000) is
situated on the river Ruhr which gives its name to the whole area
the capital of the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia—Germany´s most populous “land”
It is located just south of the industrial centres of Essen and Duisburg
It is also an important racing and training centre
There has been thoroughbred racing here since the 19th century
and even more by bombing during World War II
the track thrived and was one of the most important in western Germany for the last half of the past century
two local trainers scored spectacular successes
Uwe Ostmann trained here from 1985 to 2013
where the principal owner was Gestüt Auenquelle
also boss of the sales company BBAG; and Peter Michael Endres
also president of the race club at Düsseldorf
Ostmann—still hale and hearty at the age of 80—was one of the top addresses in Germany for a quarter of a century
winning the German Derby with Luigi in 1988 and the Preis von Europa in 1995 with Gonbarda
Gonbarda was later sold to Godolphin and dam of Champion Stakes winner and top sire Farhh
as well as just about every important race in the German calendar
Later arriving on the scene was the colourful Werner Baltromei
who enjoyed a meteoric career before his tragic death from cancer at the age of 49 in 2012
Baltromei was the first German trainer to target the top French races
and from his Mülheim base he sent out such stars as Le Miracle (winner of the Prix du Cadran in 2007
and also third in the Ascot Gold Cup) as well as Lady Marian (winner of the Prix de l´Opera in 2008)
Those were great days for Mülheim both as a training centre and a racecourse
but there were also black clouds on the horizon
and there was soon a great deal of friction between the golfers and the race club
It lost its two best races—the Gp1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks)
which is now run at Baden-Baden´s October meeting
Mülheim only staged three days of racing a year and these only at a very low level
The old race club finally gave up the ghost and declared insolvency in 2017
A new race club was formed later that year; the new president was Gestüt Auenquelle´s Karl-Dieter Ellerbracke
and the new committee included prominent owners Hans Bierkämper (Stall Mandarin) and Werner Krüger (UNIA Racing)
took over as clerk of the course and racecourse manager
Ellerbracke and Krüger were both 74 and Gudert 69; however
they had plenty of youthful idealism and ambitious ideas; and they were prepared to back up these ideas with the necessary funds
Huge investments were made in bringing the facilities at the racecourse and in the training centre up to the highest modern standards
Even in the relatively short period that the new team has been in charge
it is clear that this investment has paid off massively
There has been a huge upswing in the fortunes of both the racecourse and the training centre
There were seven race days in both 2019 and 2020 (despite the ravages of COVID-19)
Mülheim has restored their highly successful winter fixtures
in particular their Boxing Day fixture (December 26) was traditionally extremely popular
attracting Kempton-like crowds (not in 2020
This is all the more welcome since the future of racing at Neuss
They have also succeeded in bringing back black type racing to Mülheim
with the listed Diana-Trial in July and the listed Silbernes Band der Ruhr
and the racing surface is now one of the best in Germany
The training centre has also surged into the kind of prominence it previously enjoyed more than 20 years ago
there were fewer than 100 horses in training at Mülheim; now there are well over 200
It is now the second largest training centre in the country
the training facilities at Mülheim are now the best of any German racecourse,” says 46-year-old Yasmin Almenräder
who has herself contributed a great deal to this success story
she was born in nearby Essen and grew up in a horsey
was a passionate rider and a successful show jumper and three-day-eventer
and Yasmin “could ride before she could walk,” as she puts it
Her mother worked in advertising but also rode dressage
and her father always impressed on his daughters the principle: “Animals always come first
and the family moved later to Verden in northern Germany
she was soon riding out for local trainers
she qualified as an amateur jockey; her first winner came in 1992 on a horse named Figiell at the small country track of Großenkneten for permit-holder Heiko Kienemann
Yasmin had started riding regular work for top Cologne trainer Bruno Schütz
the school complained to my mother that I was spending too much time on horseback and too little time in class; so I had to concentrate more on schoolwork.” However it was at this time that she really fell in love with thoroughbred horses and also first considered the idea of making racing her profession
she received her licence as a permit-holder
training exclusively horses owned by herself or her immediate family
in fact in the same stable where she now trains
she qualified; that was a good year for German racing
Her course also included Markus Klug (four-time champion trainer in Germany) and Frenchman Jean-Pierre Carvalho
At the time she was pregnant with her daughter Lisa-Sophie
is an IT engineer designing websites for bookmakers
she finally received her full licence as a public trainer
Werner Baltromei had succeeded Michael Trybuhl at the Mülheim yard
and she was his head lad until his sad death in 2012
His widow Christina took over the yard and installed ex-jockey William Mongil as trainer
Yasmin Almenräder finally took over the stable in 2014
originally as Christina´s employee but since 2018
she has been her own boss and has formed a limited company
Trainingsbetrieb Almenräder Rennpferde GmbH to run things
“The company pays me a modest salary; in fact
my head lad gets paid more than me,” she says
Christina Baltromei is still involved and also rides out for Yasmin on a regular basis
Head lad and right-hand man Artur Chlipala
Several members of the team are still there from the days of Werner Baltromei
notably Anke Woodburn (ex-wife of jockey Kevin)
who is the stable secretary and runs the office and is “absolutely indispensable”; and head lad Polish-born Artur Chlipala
“He is my right hand man and knows everything there is to know about horses,” says Almenräder
who was a great help in the early days; and Wilhelm Feldmann (always known
who is the racing manager for Gestüt Hachtsee (owners of Le Miracle and Lady Marian
Yasmin with 2nd jockey Anna van den Troost

The agency will be supported in large part by about $180 per year from property owners
which is a significant hike for those in Rincon Valley and elsewhere but no change for those in Windsor
Sonoma County’s newest fire district is making its debut Thursday
combining four agencies into one large district circling Santa Rosa
and spanning from Windsor to the Napa County line
becomes the county’s second largest in territory and population and the second busiest
“I’m excited we get to lead what I hope will be more change in this county,” Heine said
Mountain and Bennett Valley fire departments
Station signs and fire engine logos depict the new shared name but include the geographical locations
“Community members will see it’s still Bennett Valley
still the community involvement,” said fire engineer Travis Browne
The new fire district represents the most successful effort in a long-running move to modernize the county’s far-flung and antiquated fire services network
largely through consolidation of adjoining agencies
The Sonoma County Fire District includes 75,000 residents and covers 160 square miles
It will be supported in large part by about $180 per year from property owners
which is a significant hike for those in Rincon Valley and Mountain
The money will pay for improvements including more firefighters and eventual upgrades long-overdue at Rincon Valley stations
I don’t look at it as the end,” said third-generation Rincon Valley firefighter
He said the consolidation is saving Rincon Valley’s department
which saw its financial struggles exacerbated by the 2017 firestorm that burned thousands of homes in the district
“We were on life support almost,” Leuenberger said
The new agency has a preliminary budget of $13 million
The $180 parcel tax for fire services was based on the current amount paid in the old Windsor fire district
The amount is based on a 6-cent per-square-foot cost for a 2,000-square-foot home plus a flat $65
Larger properties and those with multiple structures will pay more
It’s a steep increase for Mountain property owners who currently pay nothing for fire services and Rincon Valley residents who pay $36 annually
It’s virtually a wash for many Bennett Valley residential owners
Firefighter salaries will be based on Rincon Valley fire’s current range of $5,386-$6,280 per month
That’ll nearly double the pay of what the handful of Bennett Valley firefighters were getting and bring a smaller raise to the former Windsor firefighters
The additional firefighters will add a third position to engines in Windsor and Bennett Valley
Rincon Valley already runs three on an engine
which aligns with industry standards for safety and improved service
In the Mountain area - the hills north of Santa Rosa - paid firefighters will work there during worrisome fire and storm weather to help the volunteer crew
was a longtime Novato firefighter and chief there for five years before being hired in 2018 as chief of the Windsor and Rincon Valley fire agencies
He has spearheaded the effort to bring Mountain and Bennett Valley into the ongoing move to combine Windsor and Rincon Valley districts
The plan is backed by the Board of Supervisors
which for years has wanted fewer fire departments for improved efficiency
The consolidation gives Sonoma County about three dozen agencies - still too many
but down from more than 50 agencies years ago
Final bureaucratic approval for the new department came Wednesday in a unanimous vote of the Sonoma County Local Agency Formation Commission
which oversees government service boundaries
The agency had approved the plan but had to wait 30 days to give property owners a chance to oppose the idea
mostly regarding concerns for the cost and complaints of a lack of notice
The opposition fell far short of the 4,500 protests
or one-quarter of the overall property owners
needed to force the issue to a public vote
Heine’s consolidation efforts have drawn the attention of other fire agencies interested in possibly joining the district
Officials from the Russian River Fire Protection District
are talking with Heine regarding a contract for a chief and administrative services
with an opening to later join the district
Regional consolidation is moving forward in other areas of the county
Cazadero and Timber Cove volunteer firefighters are seeking to join together their large
rural fire jurisdictions and have asked for help to start the process
Cloverdale and Knights Valley are pushing toward joining forces
Glen Ellen and Kenwood fire officials also are talking about consolidation

the first day of Euro Hockey League’s Round 1.1 event in Mülheim was blessed with drama
No less than 20 strikes found the target in the four matches played on Friday
Dinamo Kazan (RUS) and host club HTC Uhlenhorst started their tournaments in winning fashion
PLATONOV INSPIRES ELEKTROSTAL TO VICTORY OVER GRUNWALD The 2011-2012 season of the Euro Hockey League got off to a flying start as veteran Russian international star Alexander Platonov inspired Dinamo Elektrostal to a 5-4 victory over Polish champions WKS Grunwald Poznan
The 37-year-old striker scored twice in the contest
giving his team a crucial win in their bid to qualify for Easter’s KO16 tournament
Grunwald will be hugely disappointed by a defeat which leaves them needing to beat the heavily fancied East Grinstead if they are to have any chance of reaching the second phase
KS POMORZANIN TORUN CRUSHED BY ENGLISH CHAMPIONS BEESTON In the second match of the day
English champions Beeston made their Euro hockey League title ambitions clear with a crushing 5-0 win over KS Pomorzanin Torun of Poland
Great Britain international Adam Dixon was the star of the show
playing a central role in the success as well as getting on the score-sheet
The result put Beeston firmly in control of their own future
needing just one point from Sunday’s meeting with RC de Polo de Barcelona to assure their place in the Knock-Out phase of the competition
draw or even a narrow defeat against Polo should be enough for the Nottingham based side to reach Easter’s KO16 tournament
MAYOROV NETS WINNER AS KAZAN EDGE SEKVOIA Russian champions Dinamo Kazan grabbed a 2-1 win against Olimpia Kolos Sekvoia in the third match of the day in Mülheim
Alexey Mayorov scored what proved to be the winning goal in the third quarter of the match
giving Russia clubs their second win of the day following Dinamo Elektrostal’s earlier victory
The result leaves Kazan puts Kazan top of Pool H with five points
although Sekvoia earned a bonus point due to the narrow nature of their defeat
HOSTS UHLENHORST MÜLHEIM OVERCOME RESILIENT WIEN Nine times European Champions HTC Uhlenhorst Mülheim made a winning start to their Euro Hockey League campaign
but were forced to work hard by Austrian champions AHTC Wien before emerging as 3-1 winners
Ole Keusgen and an own goal from Gerald Natal proved to be enough for the host club to secure a victory in a match that was blighted with heavy rain throughout
The second day of action in Mülheim will see many of the big beasts of the Euro Hockey League take to the field
Barry Middleton’s East Grinstead (ENG) will aim to begin their campaign with victory over Dinamo Elektrostal at 09:30 (CET)
before David Alegre’s Real Club de Polo de Barcelona (ESP) face KS Pomorzanin Torun (POL) at 12:00
