death tumbled chaotically from the sky into her city
it crash-landed in the 10-year-old girl’s neighborhood
The falling bombs killed two of her close relatives
the girl watched her parents work out a terrible calculus about the future of their five young children
the family would walk out of a Syrian war zone
they would throw themselves on the mercy of the world
They would seek asylum in another country
The girl and her family left Aleppo and found their way to a Turkish refugee camp
Within two months they would be on the road again
Dangers stalked the girl throughout the ordeal
That included the frightening night she spent in a Turkish jail with her mother and three younger sisters
Their jailers did two things she never will forget
they gave the woman and girls dry bread and dog food
they confiscated the supplies the family had collected along their journey
Gone were the precious life preservers they desperately needed for the next step to safety and freedom — the often-deadly ocean crossing in an inflatable raft
Passage to their unknown future would be in a flimsy
The wind was already whipping the Aegean Sea into chopping waves when they found themselves on a rocky beach on the west coast of Turkey
Seventy desperate people packed the small boat
The passengers trampled the children under foot and pushed them to the floor of the dinghy
they removed those precious life jackets in order to breathe
They contemplated what would happen if the boat capsized or sank
They didn’t think once about whether they’d be accepted in the country where the journey would end and life would begin
That was too far off for these seven of the 5,644,769 million Syrians who have fled the country since 2012
When the rubber boat finally reached the shore of Greece on a January day in 2016
aid workers handed the family apples and bananas
Then those well-meaning helpers embarrassed the poor
modest children by stripping off all of their wet clothes right there on the beach to put them in dry clothing
Small kindnesses can become indignities when there is no understanding
None of them realized that the family’s eventual integration into daily German society would hinge on a child
This is the story of a young Syrian girl named Hind and an elderly German grandmother named Traudlinde Eichhorn
This is the story of that spunky 10-year-old with flashing
observant brown eyes and a name that sounds like “hint.” It’s the story of that kind grandmother
a retired postal worker with time on her hands
who noticed the young girl on her street one day
About 900,000 more Syrians have fled their homes since December in the face of renewed violence in the civil war
Hind and Eichhorn have something to teach them and those who may encounter them
Germany desperately needs immigrants like Hind
Its long experience with a dropping birthrate and its intense experiments with mass migration offer a complicated road map
is aware of Germany’s potential demographic winter
and for years she was transfixed by news reports about Syrians fleeing bombs and war
About how Germany has accepted some 600,000 Syrians who applied for asylum
About how the government efficiently distributed them throughout the country to diffuse the impact on any one town
About how national leaders openly acknowledged that absorbing all these new people would be expensive at first but that doing so was a national investment that could pay off in the long run
but I took no initiative to do anything,” she said
Hind Al Hammoud literally walked into her life
the fastidious Eichhorn sat on a stool on Kirchgasse (Church Street) outside her home
bending down to scrape weeds out of the crack between the road and the sidewalk
walked down Kirchgasse’s incline toward her
“What’s that woman doing?” Hind said to Shahad
She asked Eichhorn if the girls could help
“Will you really help me?” the stunned grandmother said
“I couldn’t believe it,” Eichhorn told the Deseret News
speaking in her native German from the living room of her quiet home
She has decorated it beautifully and keeps it immaculate
were confused by her sudden relationship with a Syrian family
Some had complained about foreigners who moved into their neighborhoods
One had a bad experience with an apartment full of single men who were loud and stayed up late
disrupting the German man’s routine and sleep
Still more feared a sea change to German society
Hind and her siblings gave them plenty of opportunities
“Now they know where I hide treats for them.”
learns jokes at school and tries them out on Eichhorn
Eichhorn teaches her the nuances of German culture
We don’t talk about it so much anymore,” she added with a smile
They swap stories about how Eichhorn married young
certainly would have been married years ago if she’d remained in Syria
“She is a strong personality,” Eichhorn said
The elephant in the room is how long this relationship will last
hoping to remain in Germany permanently as refugees
they still don’t know if Germany will grant them that status
“It’s hard for her parents to commit to the language when they don’t know if they will have to return home,” Eichhorn says
“A lot of Germans feel the same way: ‘Why should I engage with them
“My hope for Hind is that she can stay in Germany,” Eichhorn said
German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a bold bet when other European nations balked at the height of the Syrian crisis in early 2015: She left her nation’s borders open
“Wir schaffen dass” — “We can do it.” Many cheered
An American presidential candidate soon said she should be ashamed
Since 2015, Germans have watched about 1.5 million asylum seekers arrive, more people than the entire population of Estonia. With them came both resolve and criticism. For example, the fledgling Alternative for Germany Party adopted an anti-immigration position. Its national support skyrocketed from 3% to 14% in the 10 months after “We can do it,” according to Politico
The United States is now at 1.729, the Deseret News reported in December. “Falling birthrates imperil our future,” blared a recent headline in The Hill
more than 60% of Syrian refugees and asylum seekers are 25 or younger
They offer a boost to the nation’s workforce
The United States and Germany have taken vastly different tacks toward Syrian refugees and asylum-seekers:
Germany accepted 185,000 of them in 2018
The United States accepted 62
America had accepted 12,587 in 2016 and 6,557 in 2017
The latest figures say Germany has absorbed 584,000 Syrians
roughly equal to the entire population of Luxembourg
Nearly five years after the in-migration began
a significant percentage of refugees have begun to help fuel the German economy
“If Germans want to maintain their economic well-being, we need about half a million immigrants every year,” immigration researcher Wolfgang Kaschuba told The Washington Post last year
“We need to guarantee that our society stays young
Its leaders consciously follow lessons of the past
Germany was at the center of the greatest refugee crisis in history
It also successfully absorbed a massive number of refugees from the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s
about 80% of adult refugees had German jobs within eight years
That sort of success begins not with immediate job opportunities but with required integration and language courses
director of integration and migration for the Arbeiter Samaritan Bund
he said one hard-earned lesson is that refugees need time
“Many refugees could quickly get jobs working in factories or kitchens or as janitors at
We want them to get jobs where they are in touch with many people and have to learn German.”
refugees must learn to understand the value of commitments to Germans
“You have to learn to call the hotel where you work when you are going to be late,” he said
“You really have to accept that if you want to work in Germany
they are going to obtain a job only to lose it.”
Germany uses a computer system to assign arriving asylum seekers to different states based on the number of residents and economic power of each area
German cities don’t have the capacity to provide refugee services
so Frankfurt and others contract with Müffke and his social welfare organization
which centers its activities on five main pillars — supporting German language acquisition
proactive activities for children and gender programs
“Our goal is to help refugees become successful and independent,” Müffke said
“Our job is to help people integrate in as short a time as possible.”
America provides elite support for a few months
you’re on your own.’ But the refugee still doesn’t understand English or the society
You should support them with the goal they should become independent.”
Germany helped refugees solve problems reactively
Müffke oversaw a beautification project at an apartment complex for refugees built and managed by his organization right in the center of Frankfurt
The long word means transition accommodations
The complex is designed to increase refugee participation in German society
It’s in the middle of a German neighborhood
The garden and common areas are designed to help refugees from all parts of the world interact with each other
A soccer team has a coach from Syria and players from Eritrea and Germany
“We help them understand how to work with the police
why we have environmental policies and demonstrations
“Men have to accept that their wives are considered equal here
The beautification project is part of a day of service sponsored by the German arm of CBRE
Some 50 company employees volunteered their time to plant trees
make planter boxes and build lounge tables and chairs
“We need to do more to give back than pay taxes
We want to do something that has a purpose.”
Erdely stopped hacking up grass where the vegetable garden would go to repeat the fact Germany lacks workers
“To look down on refugees is odd because they are part of our economic and value system,” he said
every society has to make sure not to lose itself
We have to focus on integration so there is a benefit
Müffke paused as he talked about one pillar of integration — children
“We believe we have to start with the children,” he said
for people from Afghanistan and Eritrea to be friends
The children make friends with other children in German families
It would be fair to say Hind was shellshocked the first time she walked into her German school as the only Syrian amid 1,400 students
the family spent two days at a refugee center there before traveling to Germany by bus and train
They arrived at the refugee center near Giessen on Jan
they moved into one floor of a house in Neu-Anspach
where a church holds activities designed to integrate the newest residents and a cafe holds events for asylum-seeking women
The family moved into its current apartment in the summer of 2018
“I was embarrassed,” Hind said of her first days in her new German school
It didn’t help that she’d missed a lot of school
Her father kept her home before they fled Syria because of nearby violence
“This is no Mickey Mouse school,” said Fritz Färber
one of the teachers at the Adolf Reichwein School in Neu-Anspach
The administration and teachers try to help
Asylum-seeking students are assigned to integration classes
They stuck together because they couldn’t understand the other asylum-seekers
She likes korb ball — which is like basketball — as well as sword fighting
Färber has a reputation as a “classroom daddy.” He gains the trust of his students
When a field trip approached on which Hind would be the only Syrian
He told them she needed their help and understanding
Then he convinced her to go on the field trip
but he didn’t become a music teacher until 20 years into his career
when he was asked to start a school orchestra
Hind attended a concert and asked to join his class
Her eyes went wide at the sight of the trumpet
She only told him the family couldn’t afford one
found one of his old instruments and repaired it
So she took the trumpet to a friend’s house
She practiced incognito there for two months
She finally eased into telling him about it
She talked with him about arranged marriage and other Syrian cultural norms
“She knows she can break her family’s and her culture’s traditions
but she also knows that if she breaks those traditions
it will separate her from her family,” he said
she learned it by careful listening and observation
“She built a trust in the culture and the school.”
Färber noted that many refugees experience longstanding struggles with trauma
Hind said her Syrian friends changed and began to act out more
She distanced herself from those who didn’t integrate
she said she tells her sisters and brother the recipe is simple
the second-highest type of German schooling
She is doing well enough that she could go to the next highest level and qualify for a university education
girls are engaged as early as 10 or 11 and then married months later
I knew a girl who was 10 who was engaged to a 26-year-old man
I want to get an education or learn a skill first.”
Not all of the Syrian students are doing as well
it took many pieces to make it all fit together for her,” he said
Including the help of a certain lonely German grandmother
Americans continue to wrestle with the refugee question
The federal government has failed to fix America’s broken immigration system
American business owners have more jobs than they can fill
Gary Herbert said politicians have weaponized the immigration debate as a way to earn votes rather than solving the problem
Curtis introduced the State Sponsored Visa Pilot Program Act of 2019 in November to provide a solution that would allow states to tailor a temporary worker visa pilot program to their needs
Meanwhile, President Trump says the country is “full.” In September, he signed an executive order granting local politicians veto power over the placement of asylum seekers in their communities. In January, saying Texas had done more than its fair share, Gov. Greg Abbott blocked refugee resettlement throughout his state. So did the mayor of Springfield
At least 42 governors have consented to allow refugees to resettle in their states
Utah’s governor sent a letter to the president saying the state wants more refugees
those leaders seem to be following the German lead
Some Germans want to formalize the goodwill that exists in some German cities and regions
The integration council wants to divert some European Union refugee funding to towns and cities that desire to help. They could even create “migration profiles” of the types of asylum-seeking refugees they could best support, Petra Bendel, chairwoman of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration, told Frontline
The German attitude toward asylum-seekers is generally positive
the nation’s leaders know they cannot accept as many in the future
He said people have migrated throughout the whole of human history
a member of the Christian Democratic Union
“What we need is a controlled migration process
we have to give people a perspective of hope in their home countries
The United States has South America and Central America
We have to provide development aid and economic aid for those countries ..
the motivation for people to stay in their country.”
Germans worry about the financial cost of supporting asylum seekers until they receive refugee status and are fully integrated and employed, about the effect they may have on German culture and about crimes committed by asylum seekers and refugees, Wendt said. Some feel they threaten German economic prosperity. But the integration council’s 2018 barometer
which measures public opinion about refugees every two years
found that “most Germans believe refugees enrich their country’s economy and culture,” Frontline reported
She learned they had eaten poisonous raw beans they found growing on the playground
Four ambulances and two emergency doctors swooped in and swept away Hind’s three frightened sisters — Shahad
Hind went with two of them to translate; her father went with the other two
she asked Eichhorn another question: “Can you sleep here at our house with my mom?”
who plugged herself into the German culture and a network of Germans who would help her when she and her family needed it most
And she started with a simple act of service: pulling weeds
A native-born “Oma” (the German word for grandmother) who opened herself to strangers from a distant land
willing to respond to a crisis at a moment’s notice and to provide long-term daily nurturing and stability
“I trust Fatima and the children,” Eichhorn said
They know what I have in my cupboards better than I do.”
One who was skeptical now regularly helps Hind repair her bike
Germany has begun to deny it to some after they have worked for years on integration
then we send them back without proving whether they will be safe or have work
but there are more Germans who commit crimes and hurt women than there are refugees.”
But success relies on both the asylum seeker and the resident of their new country
the Al Hammoud family stood outside Eichhorn’s home
watched quietly in blue jeans under a flower print dress
held the bunny rabbit Eichhorn keeps for her
Her right arm rested on the shoulder of Mahmoud’s Lionel Messi soccer jersey
Her left arm was wrapped lovingly around Shahad in her pink sweater
Nour and Nada mugged for everyone underneath Eichhorn’s towering sunflowers
“These are my grandchildren,” Eichhorn said

The 5-year olds Dalton de Prepinson and Forte Village and the 6-year olds Feine Deern and Fabajo became the winners of the Bundeschampionate qualification classes held during the "Winternationale" CDI Neu-Anspach on 29 July 2023
The CDI at horse dealer Arnold Winter's Wintermühle kicked off on Thursday 27 July with some national tests
There were no less than four winners in the two divisions
Nine combinations competed in the L-level dressage horse test for 5-year olds
Two pairs tied in first place on a score of 8.0 which earned them a ticket to the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf
They are Helena Bicker on the French owner Hanoverian gelding Dalton de Prepinson (by Don Juan de Hus x Soliman de Hus)
Luxembourg's Fie Skarsoe also got a trophy aboard Peter Schlüssen's Oldenburg gelding Forte Village (by Feinrich x Johnson)
8.5 for canter and 8 for submission and general impression
In the M-level dressage horse test for 6-year olds there were 10 combinations competing and they were assessed by judges Elke Ebert
There were again two winners on a score of 8.2
Laura Ihring piloted Nicola Krause's Hanoverian mare Feine Deern (by Franz Ferdinand x Lauries Crusador xx) to the victory after receiving 8 for walk and trot
8 for submission and 8.5 for general impression
Charlotte Tollhopf rode Sportpferde Galleria's Fabajo (by Furst Belissaro x Wolkentanz) to the same winning score
and submission and 8.5 for trot and general impression
Hungarian Mate Garai braved the elements at the "Winternationale" international dressage competition at Wintermühle equestrian center in Neu-Anspach on 27 -30 July 2023 to win big aboard three of Sporpferde Galleria's dressage horses
The rainy weather and pond-like puddles on the dressage arena at the CDI Neu-Anspach did not dampen Maté's spirit and he put his best foot forward to post outstanding scores on the leader board
"Even if the weather was not the best all the time i really enjoyed being here and the show was very well organised," he commented
The 31-year old Garai entered familiar turf when he trailered three of Sportpferde Galleria's horses to Neu-Anspach
He has worked as a stable rider for Arnold Winter for years
so the Hungarian was well acquainted with the venue
Garai, who competed at three European Pony Championships before heading to the 2007 and 2008 European Junior Riders Championships on Julie de Deken's Romero (by Ritual x Freiherr), knew a decade ago a life with horses would be his professional path
After being as an assistant rider at Wintermühle in Neu-Anspach
the young man moved into the principle rider's role at Sportpferde Galleria
a company founded in 2022 and seeking top talented young horses
the company purchased its own sales and training facility in Mönchengladbach of which the full renovation is almost completed
Garai made his international show debut on the Galleria horses at the start of July in Deauville
The CDI Neu-Anspach was his second time out
"I'm so thankful for the great horses and the support of the team at Galleria Sporthorses," Maté stated
In Neu-Anspach Garai was in the winning mood
Garai on Galleria's Summerville OLDEspecially in the young horses classes
Maté was able to set his hand to dominating the competition
Aboard Galleria's Summerville (by Sezuan x Diamond Hit) he was third in the preliminary test on 80.60% and won the Finals test with a whopping 89.40%
The Oldenburg bred Summerville was competed last year by Spaniard Manuel Dominguez at the 2022 World Young Horse Championships in Ermelo
With the developing Prix St Georges horse Galleria's DeLaurentis FRH (by DeLorean x Stedinger)
It was the horse's first international competition in his life and the pair placed second in the preliminary test with 80.361% and won the Finals test with 79.157%
Riding for Sportpferde Galleria has opened many doors for Garai who after years in saddle of sales horses and national shows has now finally made his international debut at the highest level
Garai on Galleria's DeLaurentis FRHAboard Galleria's licensed Danish warmblood stallion Vincent Maranello (by Zack x Future Cup) he premiered at GP level in Deauville and made a huge leap forward in Neu-Anspach
finishing sixth in the Grand Prix with 66.652% and second in the Special with 67.255%
"I had the best weekend at the Wintermühle," Garai explained
It was our first show together with Delaurentis and first S-class for him
Summerville had a third place because he was at first a little bit shy with the water (in the arena)
but then he produced an amazing 89,4% and first place
Vincent gives me from test to test a better feeling
The 2023 CDI Neu-Anspach also featured several national level classes including an important Bundeschampionate qualifier on 29 July
Garai's assistant rider Charlotte Tollhopf won the 6-year old dressage horse class aboard Galleria's Fabajo (by Fürst Belissaro x Wolkentanz) on a score of 8.2
Tollhopf also piloted the green Oldenburg Fausto OLD (by Fürstenball x Totilas) to a 6th place in the 5-year old division
putting important mileage and experienced on this diamond in the rough

Bärbel Eppinger's internationally competed Oldenburg stallion Rulaman has passed away
Rulaman was a 1996 born Oldenburg stallion by Rubinstein out of Romanze (by Romadour II x Adjutant x Nonsens)
Born at Eppinger's Lerchenhof in Münsingen
Rulaman wasn brought into the world with the help of Bärbel's brother Heinert
The stallion first proved himself in sport before he became a licensed stallion
He was at based at equestrian centre Wintermühle in Neu-Anspach
where Bärbel was working at the time as a trainer
The stallion made his sport debut as a 4-year old in 2000
Three years later he made his debut at small tour level at a local show in Neu-Anspacht in August 2003
In October 2003 his international debut followed at the CDI-W Kaposvar
where he finished in the top five in all three small tour classes
Bärbel handed the ride to her cousin Anne Eppinger-Lutkemeier
Eppinger and RulamanIn 2005 Bärbel and Rulaman made their national Grand Prix debut
Their first international Grand Prix ride was at the 2006 CDI Wiesbaden
In 2007 it was Anne's turn again on the stallion and she rode him in the junior level classes at the 2007 CDI-PJYR Bonn
She also won the bronze medal at the 2007 German Junior Rider Championships
Rulaman was a real family horse as Eppinger regularly competed him herself at that time
Eppinger mainly focused on national level competition
although she also campaigned him at the CDI's in Kaposvar
They finished fourth in the GP Special at the 2008 German Professionally Dressage Riders Championships
In 2012 Bärbel's 16-year old son Marc Eppinger competed the stallion the first time and last time at L-level at the local show in Münsingen in June 2012
It was the stallion's last competition start at age 16
The horse achieved over 30,000 euro in prize money
a substantial amount at the time collected at national shows
He was first licensed for the Hessian breed society in Alsfeld in February 2005 when he was 9 years old
Rulaman at the 2010 CDI HagenIn 2006 Oldenburg approval followed and in 2007 the Baden Wurttemberger verband approved him
He was offered at stud at Eppinger's yard as well as at the state stud Marbach in Gomadingen
He did not do a stallion performance test as he was accepted based on his sport results
Rulaman did not make an impact as a breeding stallion with only 16 sport horses and 3 broodmares recorded in the FN database
Rulaman enjoyed his retirement to the field
An injury to his coronet band no longer properly healed and last week it was decided in the best interest of the horse to put him to sleep
"He was a gift," Bärbel told Reiter Journal
The Werndl family have added a new FEI horse to their collection after acquiring Uta Graf's small tour ride Quick Decision
The chestnut is an 8-year old Hanoverian gelding by Quaterhall out of Ronja H (by Rotspon x Lauries Crusador xx)
The striking chestnut has moved yards quite a few times as a youngster
He was first owned by with Martin and Jasmin Schaudt and purchased at their yard by Annette Göbelsmann-Schweitzer alongside a second horse
the now 9-year old Hanoverian Diallo (by Dancier x Floriscount)
The ride was allocated to Roxana Mohr, who trained with Uta Gräf at the time and rode her first Grand Prix test on Uta's Dandelion (owned by Annette)
Mohr went independent at Fröhnerhof in Mehlingen
and Göbelsmann-Schweitzer followed her with her horses
Roxy made her show debut on Quick Decision in April 2021 and qualified for the 2021 Bundeschampionate
where they placed 9th in the 5-year old finals
At the same time Mohr also rode Annette's Westfalian mare Bonne Jument (by Belissimo M x De Niro) and this horse enabled Mohr to have her international show debut at amateur level at the 2021 CDI Deauville
Roxana competed Quick Decision through the spring of 2022 including in the 6-year tests at the CDI Wiesbaden She quit as a professional rider and is now a real estate agent
With Uta Gräf at the 2024 CDN DonaueschingenOwner Göbelsmann-Schweitzer moved the horse to Dorothee Schneider
Uta premiered Quick Decision in February 2023 at S-level and rode the developing PSG horse tests in Darmstadt and Neu-Anspach
She showed him at several regional shows through 2024 to consolidate him at small tour level
They campaigned in the Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifier in Donaueschingen
Annette Göbelsmann-Schweitzer has now sold Quick Decision to the Werndl family
who also tried Dallio but he stayed with Uta Graf
"I’m very excited to have him with us," Benjamin Werndl told Eurodressage
"to bring some great horses with amazing talent into the Grand Prix the next years

German squad listed young rider Paul Löcher has parted ways with his trainer Katrin Burger as he begins a new chapter as a college student combined with dressage riding
The Maxdorf based Löcher is one of Germany's young rising stars. The German young riders squad for 2023 has only five riders in the A-squad and six in the B-squad
Paul and Amaro T are members of the B-squad
The 19-year old Paul made his international show debut as a junior rider in 2021
After finishing 13th with Limoncelli (by Lord Loxley x Graphitano) in the Preis der Besten
he debuted at his first international at the CDI Kronberg in June 2021
In 2022 he rode Amaro T, an 11-year old Westfalian by Ampere x Fidermark, at the CDI's in Kronberg and Neu-Anspach. At the 2022 German Young Riders Championships they were 10th
With the Baden Wurttemberger bred Fraser Island (by Finest x Laurentio) he contested the 7-year old tests at the CDI Neu-Anspach and was 19th in the warm-up round for 7-year olds at the 2022 Bundeschampionate
Löcher and Amaro T at the CDI KronbergLöcher will begin his studies to for a professional future in real estate and the commute to his coach
from his own yard in Maxdorf has become too time consuming
I decided to also focus on my professional career in addition to my sporting career at the beginning of 2023
because I would like to take over my parents‘ real estate company later," Paul told Eurodressage
"For this reason I will start my studies in a few weeks
The resulting time commitment and the additional physical distance would unfortunately make further cooperation impossible."
Paul started working with Burger and her husband Achim Neubert at the end of 2020
He became regional champion and went on to book his first national successes as well as got some international mileage
"They have contributed a large part to my success
We continue to be connected through many great memories and happy moments," he said
Paul is now re-laying the pieces of the puzzle for his riding career combined with studies
In the meantime he has been getting help from his home team and Australian Hayley Bereford
Julia Kay on Second Sister vom Rosencarree"During my studies
I will complete many practical modules and be accommodated by many well-known companies throughout Germany," he explained
"Hayley is currently supporting me both in the training of my young horses and in my riding
my sister and our team give me the best possible support when working with the other horses
so that I can continue to concentrate very well on Amaro
The Löcher family recently welcomed the horse Second Sister vom Rosencarree (also known Sweet Potato vom Carree)
a rising 8-year old Oldenburg mare by Sandro Hit x Royal Diamond
She is the full sister to Dorothee Schneider's Grand Prix mare Sister Act vom Rosencarree
Löcher's sister Laura is also a dressage rider
who began competing Paul's Limoncelli last autumn
As of 1 February 2023, Burger and Neubert welcome Jerome Schaack as their new assistant trainer to their team. The Luxembourg born Schaack, who worked before for Christoph Niemann, will join Nina Dirks on the riders' team

German professional dressage rider Julia Kay has tragically lost her brave battle against cancer
Julia Christina Maria Kay was born 14 July 1989 and horses played a central role in her life
Originally she was quite versatile and showed an interest in vaulting
but it was dressage that captured her heart
At age 19 she did her first competition in vaulting
but by 2009 she was competing dressage with horses Leona SD (by Laudabilis x Munchhausen) and Staatsfeind Nr 1 (by Statesman x Florencio)
Her first shows she did in Luxembourg riding horses that are owned by LUX Dressage
She did the official "bereiter" programme with an internship at Arnold Winter's dealer's yard Wintermühle in Neu-Anspach
In 2014 she moved to Beelitz to ride for breeder Silke Pelzer at Brood Farm Rosencarree
As a professional rider she also rode for several owners and competed in her first S-level test aboard the Oldenburg bred Salisbury Hill (by Serano Gold x Furst Heinrich)
Her first big national championship was in 2018 when she rode Bentley (by Bordeaux x Quaterman) and Sir Napoleon vom Rosencarree at the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf
They were 35th in the consolation and 12th in the Finals
She finished the year winning the Berlin-Brandenburg Indoor Championships on Zimba (by Sheraton x Amulet)
In 2019 Kay returned to the Bundeschampionate with All In (by Ampere x Sandro Hit)
Grey Rose (by Grey Flanell x Furst Romancier) and Sir Napoleon
She finished 14th in the consolation with All In

The former Hanoverian licensed breeding stallion and international young riders' horse Contendros Bube has passed away on 20 June 2021
Contendros Bube was a Hanoverian by Contendro out of Pik Bubes Girl (by Pik Bube I)
Contendros Bube was licensed for breeding at the 2004 Hanoverian Stallion Licensing in Verden
He did his 300-day stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf in the autumn of 2005 and scored 138.69 points for dressage (2nd) and 100.03 points for show jumping (22nd) to finish third with a total of 128 points
His first competition was in May 2005 under Ralf Balzer
but returned to the arena in June 2008 under Hans-Peter Klaus
who competed him through 2011 from L-level to small tour level
In 2010 Klaus once showed the stallion in a CDI
He rode him in one Prix St Georges test at the CDI Lingen
In 2011 he sold to Marita Runge as a youth rider's horse for her daughter Sarah Runge
The new combination made its show debut in Neu-Anspach in September 2011 at S* level
They had an international show debut in a winning way at the 2012 CDI Vejer de la Frontera
where they won the preliminary test with 70.093% and placed second in the team and individual test
They went on to show the next weekend in Vejer
Two months later they competed at the CDIO-Y Saumur and won the kur to music
Their fourth and last international was the 2013 CDIO-Y Saumur
Saumur in 2013 was the horse's last international show
Nationally Runge rode the horse in two more competitions: a local show in Neu-Anspach in August 2013 and in Donaueschingen in September 2013
At age 11 Contendros Bube did his last show there
Sarah Runge and Contendros BubeContendros Bube was retired from sport because he was diagnosed with a heart condition
"I couldn't compete him further because of issues with his heart and sadly we had to put him down today," Runge told Eurodressage yesterday
As a breeding stallion he produced 59 mares which are registered as broodmares with the German equestrian federation
He has 156 offspring registered for sport with the German NF and four of them are competing at S-level
His most famous offspring is Christopher (Katharina Pickel)
At the 2015 Klosterhof Medingen auction the then 4-year old Hanoverian bred Calandro (by Contendros Bube x Stedinger x De Niro) sold to Norway for 75,000 euro
British 23-year old Mollie Summerland won the CCI 5* in Luhmuhlen
on the 12-year old Hanoverian gelding Charly van ter Heiden (by Contendros Bube x Escudo II)
Japanese Grand Prix rider Kazuki Sado has increased his chances for a Japanese team spot for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo
by getting a second Grand Prix horse to ride for the 2020 season
Ludwig der Sonnenkonig is a 13-year old Oldenburg stallion by London Swing x Liberator x Directeur
the horse made its show debut in 2010 under Anna Pfeilsticker
The stallion sold to British Sam Duckworth who first competed him at M-level in Neu Anspach in May 2014
Duckworth competed the stallion through Grand Prix level and in the Louisdor Cup qualifiers in Hagen and Donaueschingen until the end of 2016
Ludwig der Sonnenkonig moved to Helgstrand Dressage in Denmark to be sold
He was first competed in Denmark by Joao Moreira at a Danish regional show in June 2018
In the autumn on 2017 the ride was allocated to Danish Under 25 rider Victoria Vallentin
who became one of the Danish Grand Prix shooting stars of 2018
Vallentin and Ludwig der Sonnenkonig were in the running for a team spot for the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon
but were bested by Betina Jaeger on Belstaff in the CDIO Aachen head-to-head WEG team qualifier
after reviewing the rules once more it was not such a bad idea for the then 20-year old Vallentin to go to the 2018 European Under 25 Championships in Exloo instead of Tryon
Senior team selection would have meant that she would no longer be allowed to compete in the Under 25 division in the next four years
In Exloo she won the Short Grand Prix test bronze medal and in 2019 the pair won the Danish Under 25 Championships
Vallentin quit her job as a rider at Helgstrand Dressage to move to Dennis Fisker's yard and lost the ride on the stallion
The horse has now been leased to the Japan Racing Association as Sado's Tokyo hopeful
The 34-year old Sado began competing internationally in 2015 with Bellissimo and Ziroco at international GP level
He also rode at small tour level with Urban Legend
In 2018 Japan Racing Association bought the Hanoverian Barolo (by Breitling W x Hitchcock) from A Seifert-Cohn and Carl Hester and competed him on the Japanese Team at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon
To up his chances for Japanese team selection for Tokyo
Sado has now been given a second iron in the fire
The horse has already arrived at in The Netherlands
where Sado trains with Tineke and Imke Bartels
The new duo is scheduled to make its CDI show debut next week at the CDI Waregem in Belgium
