the humanity!” exclamation amid the 1937 Hindenburg disaster sounded in my mind recently as I gazed at an exhibit near the German ground where the airship’s ill-fated voyage had begun
One of my earliest introductions to the news media’s impact came when a TV program I saw as a kid showed newsreel footage of that zeppelin inferno in Lakehurst
I had never really delved into the prelude that saw German airships help usher in the age of global aviation
Hence my visit to the Zeppelin Museum in what is today Neu-Isenberg but before a 1977 merger was Zeppelinheim
Meaning “zeppelin home,” it was originally a company town built to house employees of the Rhein-Main airship base
now part of the Frankfurt Airport territory
Less than 25 minutes from Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden and about an hour and 15 minutes from Kaiserslautern
bucolic neighborhood and has a bike path running next to it
The sunny tranquility on the day of my visit was unexpected
given that Zeppelenheim is on the doorstep of one of the world’s busiest air hubs
Just past the museum entrance is a bust of the namesake airships’ creator
On either side of the sculpture and the information counter behind it are exhibit spaces
the Graf Zeppelin and others hanging overhead
a passenger dirigible that was delivered to the United States in 1924 as part of Germany’s World War I reparations
the craft became the naval airship USS Los Angeles
The upstairs and downstairs floor space is covered with cool memorabilia from the days when the zeppelins of Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft
plied the skies and created the commercial aviation industry
Following the transfer of the LZ 126 to the U.S.
charted a new course of becoming an overseas air carrier of passengers
and carried more than 13,000 passengers without ever having an accident
The circumnavigation spawned a board game introduced in 1929 called Banzai Zeppelin
Players tried to figuratively complete the journey faster than Eckener did
It came with a route map and broke up the trip into four destinations: New York
Tokyo and the departure point of Friedrichshafen
Its trans-Atlantic flights from Frankfurt served North and South America
The museum has a mockup of the passenger deck with two seats and a view out the windows of Rio de Janeiro
Only 3,059 passengers were transported aboard the airship during its 63 total trips
the last of which ended in tragedy on May 6
The Nazis had used both aircraft for propaganda purposes
but the explosion of the Hindenburg brought about the demise of the airship age
The exhibit on the Hindenburg disaster features pictures of the burning dirigible
a fragment of the mooring tower and a bow lamp
but an explanatory booklet in English is available at the counter
Another revelation awaited in the basement
where a collection of Americana introduced me to the partnership that resulted in the Goodyear Zeppelin Corp
I read in the museum booklet that Goodyear also had a hand in the revival of zeppelins in the 1990s by a Friedrichshafen maker of semi-rigid airships known as the Zeppelin NT
Of the five such aircraft in service worldwide in 2019
three belonged to Goodyear and operated in America
The exhibit evoked memories of another airship that I had seen on TV many times as a kid watching sporting events: the Goodyear blimp
I was amazed to learn of both the military forebears and German lineage of this American branding icon
Fred Freund won several European Championship team medals and was part of the German silver team at the 1976 World Championships
he was German four-in-hand champion twice (1969

Fred Freund presented his father’s second four-in-hand at competitions as early as the age of 15
he competed for the first time – as the youngest participant to date – at the CHIO in Aachen
finishing second in the overall classification
he won Aachen and was immortalised on the wall of the Aachen jury tower
the man from Neu-Isenburg won the German Derby in Hamburg and the CAI in Donaueschingen
and a year later the German four-horse championships
Fred Freund officially quit driving in 2009 in Riesenbeck

45,000 sqm site set to be available from December
Real estate development firm Goodman is to develop a data center in Frankfurt
on the site of a former newspaper printing plant
The company this week announced that it has recently purchased the 4.5-hectare brownfield plot in Neu-Isenburg
and plans to develop it into a 100MVA powered shell facility
said: “Goodman’s focus on strategic infill locations means that we have sites that are attractive for a wide range of uses including data centers
Many of our sites are located close to consumers and have access to power – important ingredients in being able to serve the data needs of the growing digital economy
Moving into data center development in Germany was a natural evolution for us to complement our wider portfolio of logistics facilities
the 45,000 sqm (484,375sq ft) facility – built on the former printing plant of the German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau – will be available from the end of December 2023
The now-demolished print factory closed around 2013 as the paper faced financial troubles
the site changed hands a number of times with various proposals including a hotel put forward but never realized
"Goodman’s FRA II data center will transform a vacant brownfield site into an essential piece of infrastructure serving millions of end users
supporting the continued growth of Frankfurt’s economy," said Matthieu Wieczorek
Goodman’s data center portfolio currently spans Tokyo
Wieczorek added the company has plans to expand into other markets “as opportunities arise.”
Goodman builds business parks, industrial and warehouse/logistics space, and data centers. Google bought space in Goodman’s Tokyo Business Park in 2019. The company is working with STT GDC to build two data centers in Tokyo
In September 2022
Goodman opened the Tsuen Wan West precinct in Hong Kong; the new data center development comprises four buildings totaling 1.6 million sq ft (148,640 sqm) of space and will reportedly offer up to 400MW
Goodman is one of a number of logistics & warehouse industrial real estate firms looking to move into or expand their existing presence in the data center space
and others are also looking to develop facilities in the US
Goodman was previously listed by French data center builder and Cap Ingelec subsidiary Cap DC as a ‘key partner; DCD understands the two companies have partnered in markets such as Milan and Madrid

while fruit and vegetable growers face letting greenhouses stand idle
In poorer Eastern Europe, people are stocking up on firewood, while in wealthier Germany, the wait for an energy-saving heat pump can take half a year. And businesses don’t know how much more they can cut back
“We can’t turn off the lights and make our guests sit in the dark,” said Richard Kovacs
business development manager for Hungarian burger chain Zing Burger
The restaurants already run the grills no more than necessary and use motion detectors to turn off lights in storage
with some stores facing a 750% increase in electricity bills since the beginning of the year
Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has turned the war into an energy and economic crisis
with prices rising to record highs in recent months and fluctuating wildly
Europe’s ability to get through the winter may ultimately depend on how cold it is and what happens in China
Shutdowns aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19 have idled large parts of China’s economy and meant less competition for scarce energy supplies
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this month that early preparations mean Europe’s biggest economy is “now in a position in which we can go bravely and courageously into this winter
in which our country will withstand this.”
or at the beginning of this year,” he added
Even if there is gas this winter, high prices already are pushing people and businesses to use less and forcing some energy-intensive factories like glassmakers to close
It’s a decision also facing fruit and vegetable growers in the Netherlands who are key to Europe’s winter food supply: shutter greenhouses or take a loss after costs skyrocketed for gas heating and electric light
which grows green peppers and blackberries
idled one greenhouse and experimented with lower temperatures
and potentially operating in the red to maintain customer relationships even at lower volumes
not to ruin the reputation that we have developed over the years,” said Wouter van den Bosch
the sixth generation of his family to help run the business
Kovacs, grower Van den Bosch and bakers like Andreas Schmitt in Frankfurt, Germany, are facing the hard reality that conservation goes only so far
Schmitt is heating fewer ovens at his 25 Cafe Ernst bakeries
running them longer to spare startup energy
narrowing his pastry selection to ensure ovens run full
and storing less dough to cut refrigeration costs
That might save 5% to 10% off an energy bill that is set to rise from 300,000 euros per year
“It’s not going to shift the world,” he said
The bulk of his costs is “the energy required to get dough to bread
said some small bakeries are contemplating giving up
Government help will be key in the short term
while a longer-term solution involves reforming energy markets themselves
though the spending required may be unsustainable
Nations have allocated 500 billion euros to ease high utility bills since September 2021
according to an analysis from the Bruegel think tank in Brussels
and they are bailing out utilities that can’t afford to buy gas to fulfill their contracts
Governments have lined up additional gas supply from pipelines running to Norway and Azerbaijan and ramped up their purchase of expensive liquefied natural gas that comes by ship
At the same time, the EU is weighing drastic interventions like taxing energy companies’ windfall profits and revamping electricity markets so natural gas costs play less of a role in determining power prices
But as countries scramble to replace Russian fossil fuels and even reactivate polluting coal-fired power plants, environmentalists and the EU itself say renewables are the way out long term.
Neighbors in Madrid looking to cut electricity costs and aid the energy transition installed solar panels this month to supply their housing development after years of work.
“I have suddenly reduced my gas consumption by 40%, with very little use of three radiators strategically placed in the house,” neighbor Manuel Ruiz said.
Governments have dismissed Russia as an energy supplier but President Vladimir Putin still has leverage, analysts say. Some Russian gas is still flowing and a hard winter could undermine public support for Ukraine in some countries. There have already been protests in places like Czechia and Belgium.
“The market is very tight and every molecule counts,” said Agata Loskot-Strachota, senior fellow for energy policy at the Center for Eastern Studies in Warsaw. “This is the leverage that Putin still has — that Europe would have to face disappointed or impoverished societies.”
In Bulgaria, the poorest of the EU’s 27 members, surging energy costs are forcing families to cut extra spending ahead of winter to ensure there is enough money to buy food and medicine.
More than a quarter of Bulgaria’s 7 million people can’t afford to heat their home, according to EU statistics office Eurostat, the highest in the 27-nation bloc due to poorly insulated buildings and low incomes. Nearly half of households use firewood in winter as the cheapest and most accessible fuel, but rising demand and galloping inflation have driven prices above last year’s levels.
In the capital, Sofia, where almost half a million households have heating provided by central plants, many sought other options after a 40% price increase was announced.
Grigor Iliev, a 68-year-old retired bookkeeper, and his wife decided to cancel their central heating and buy a combined air conditioner-heating unit for their two-room apartment.
“It’s a costly device, but in the long run, we will recoup our investment,” he said.
Meanwhile, businesses are trying to stay afloat without alienating customers. Klara Aurell, owner of two Prague restaurants, said she’s done all she can to conserve energy.
“We use LED bulbs, we turn the lights off during the day, the heating is only when it gets really cold and we use it only in a limited way,” she said. “We also take measures to save water and use energy-efficient equipment. We can hardly do anything else. The only thing to remain is to increase prices. That’s how it is.”
The gourmet Babushka Artisanal Bakery in an affluent district of Budapest has had to raise prices by 10%. The bakery used less air conditioning despite Hungary’s hottest summer on record and is ensuring the ovens don’t run without bread inside.
While it has enough traffic to stay open for now, further jumps in energy costs could threaten its viability, owner Eszter Roboz said.
“A twofold increase in energy costs still fits into the operation of our business and into our calculations,” she said. “But in the case of a three- to fourfold increase, we will really need to think about whether we can continue this.”

improves service for customers and supports environmental and climate protection
presented the company's latest innovations at its first product show in Frankfurt
The framework conditions for global supply chains are changing rapidly
they are characterized by a period of enormous uncertainty and volatility
but also by over-all cost increases in the energy and transport sector
and supported by IT solutions to survive in this agile environment
DB Schenker’s Intercontinental Supply Chain Solutions (ISC) experts are driving the digitalization of supply chains with holistic IT platforms and processes
These digital solutions enable optimized transport management as well as collaborative processes between the customer
their supply chain partners and DB Schenker
the supply chain becomes more resilient and agile
The digital solutions are characterized by the following advantages:
More information about Intercontinental Supply Chain Solutions can be found on the DB Schenker website
DB Schenker's land transport experts have a real-time view of the whole of Europe: 430 terminals

Artificial intelligence - what can this buzzword actually do for the logistics industry
AI is less science fiction but adds real value in day-to-day business
it helps to make fact-based decisions and thus stabilizes supply chains and increases efficiencies in transport
artificial intelligence finds points of contact
with dynamically optimized offers and prices)
through transparency and forecasting capabilities)
and in the optimization of transports (e.g
in network design and optimization) and warehousing processes (e.g
Three concrete examples of the use of AI at DB Schenker:
Since any applied AI is only as good as the data on which it is based
a key area of action for Schenker is to systematically drive forward the availability and quality of data
The decisive factor is above all a pronounced and practiced data culture in the company

Digital innovations can help to address many of the numerous challenges global logistics is facing
Spare part deliveries via 3D printing is a new example of how DB Schenker creates real added value for customers
A virtual warehouse has many advantages: Lead times
logistics costs and also inventory stocks can be drastically reduced
Recent studies assume that up to 10% of spare parts inventories can be produced via additive manufacturing and do not need stockpiling
a virtual warehouse helps to increase part availability and allows to respond more flexibly to unplanned delivery bottlenecks
This eliminates long waiting times and spare parts that are no longer available remain available
which extends the service life of equipment
valuable raw materials are only used for the workpiece that is actually needed
Thanks to a worldwide network of contracted manufacturers
printing can take place close to where it is needed
Deutsche Bahn is a pioneer in the additive manufacturing of spare parts and has been actively involved with this digital manufacturing technology for many years
Schenker's core competencies lie in the operation of physical warehouses and worldwide supply chains
With Schenker’s new service “On-Demand Production”
customers can benefit from both company’s expertise and receive everything from a single source
and more sustainable – DB Schenker uses virtual spaces for logistical processes in its physical warehouses
Employees at the contract logistics warehouse in Neu-Isenburg use data glasses to inspect returns in a virtual space
Inspections that used to require customer experts to be physically present at the location can now be performed via remote video-streaming
Schenker has implemented augmented reality (AR) glasses at its logistics center
The new process has enabled DB Schenker to reduce turnaround times for returns of around 80 percent of incoming items from an average of 180 days to 7-14 days
carbon dioxide emissions caused by long distance travel are significantly reduced
Whereas before customer engineers had to fly in to inspect parts (often from overseas)
logistics experts in Neu-Isenburg are now virtually connected with engineers from over thousands of kilometers away
To perform a virtual inspection a Schenker employee connects to the customers's engineer via hands-free video streaming using AR glasses
The engineer can remotely inspect the product from the employee's perspective
give instructions and set markers or display documents via the application
The content is then displayed to the employee as a hologram in real time
The AR headset was introduced at the Neu-Isenburg site in mid-2021 and has been in regular use since then
Covid-19 has presented a major challenge to the logistics industry – a challenge during which the health and safety of employees has always been and still is a top priority for DB Schenker
DB Schenker introduced a hygiene concept involving modern sensor technology at its Neu-Isenburg site in order to keep all 100 warehouse employees as safe as possible
which covers around two soccer fields in size
sensors help employees to keep a safe distance from other colleagues
The essential piece of the solution is a small
the “KINEXON SafeTag” can be worn as a wristband or attached to work clothing
It continuously measures the distance between employees with an accuracy of up to 10 centimeters and gives an acoustic and visual warning sign if the minimum distance of 1.5 meters to another person is not maintained
critical contacts can be identified within 15 minutes
making it possible to quickly inform affected employees
The data generated in this process is accepted by the local health department as the basis for further protective measures
only relevant contacts need to go into isolation
By introducing KINEXON SafeZone DB Schenker protects its employees and is able to maintain 24/7-business at its Neu-Isenburg site
Authentic training that does not disrupt operations – DB Schenker uses virtual reality technology to train forklift drivers
The application enables users to practice operating the forklift in digital representations of real locations
helping them gain a better sense for safety in the process
DB Schenker developed the prototype of the VR training system in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in the EnterpriseLab for Logistics and Digitalization
The simulator consists of a reconstructed forklift control system and VR glasses through which users can dive into and navigate through a virtual storage environment
interacting with relevant items – users train the same processes as they would in a physical warehouse
the application can also simulate exceptional and hazardous situations
enabling users to train under special circumstances that would otherwise be difficult to practice in the real world
By implementing the innovative training system
DB Schenker actively improves safety at its locations: aspiring forklift drivers can familiarize themselves with the actual storage environment in advance and practice relevant safety measures
And forklift drivers that are already working at the locations can use the system to refresh their training
promoting responsible behaviour and reducing the risk of forklift accidents
virtual forklift training is another step towards digitizing the world of work
This is something employees enjoy as a survey conducted among those who have completed a VR forklift training has shown
DB Schenker first launched the simulator as a pilot project in 2019 at the Tilburg Logistics Center in the Netherlands
where it was used to train forklift drivers
Further roll-outs at other DB Schenker locations worldwide are planned
Volocopter and DB Schenker have been working together on the further development of the heavy-duty drone "VoloDrone" for specific application areas of drone services in logistics
DB Schenker joined the Urban Air Mobility company as a strategic investor
The aim is to use drone operations to expand the existing logistics infrastructure for land or sea transport and to create completely new supply chains and transport routes
As part of the collaboration with DB Schenker
the drone completed its first public flight in October 2021: for this
the electric cargo drone was equipped with a loading box between the landing frame to transport cargo on a Euro pallet to a DB Schenker Cargo Bike
After safe landing of the VoloDrone and successful handover
a cargo bike brought its delivery to its final destination
The test flight reached a maximum altitude of 22 meters
DB Schenker and Volocopter had developed an operational plan for the operation of electric cargo drones in logistics
This was based on a study conducted jointly with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics
The simulation conducted by the Volocopter
DB Schenker and Fraunhofer research teams included the study of ground processes for coding goods
automated drone delivery services by autonomous vehicles and logistics-specific necessary pre-flight checks
standardized procedures were identified for on-site personnel to cover transportation and loading processes
all-electric cargo drone designed to transport ISO pallets of all sizes weighing up to 200 kilograms over a range of 40 kilometers
This electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is designed for versatile operations in various industries
The aircraft has 18 rotors and motors for propulsion
2.15 meters high and has a maximum takeoff weight of 600 kilograms
the VoloDrone will be fully electric and capable of flying autonomously out of sight of the pilot
DB Schenker recently underlined its ambition to become front runner in its industry by partnering with Avatour to develop a true alternative: enabling virtual warehouse tours
offering a 360° perspective with real time video
“The partnership with Avatour offers us a new dimension of digitalisation in the contract logistics business,” said Todd Starbuck
“It is essential for us and our operations to stay close to our customers,” he added
DB Schenker selected Avatour because of its unique digital platform
As an example of savings – each DB Schenker warehouse is visited at least once per year by five employees and partners
Domestic travel alone accounts for millions of dollars of travel expenses and significant CO2 emissions
“We’re excited to help DB Schenker realize a future beyond distance,” said Avatour’s founder and CEO Devon Copley
“Avatour’s technology is a category-defining platform helping companies reimagine their traditional ways of doing business
the results we see are good for the company
Sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important in the metropolitan regions
DB Schenker offers CO2-free deliveries in more than 60 European cities
More than 140 electric-driven vehicles are in DB Schenker’s urban fleet
60 Cargo-Bikes are used in 24 European cities
servicing customers in Hamburg and soon in Coburg
there even is one extraordinarily powerful e-bike delivering three Euro pallets and up to 500 kilograms of cargo load on the last mile
France and Norway are using the biggest number of green vehicles
DB Schenker is using 18 eTrucks and 3 eBikes – making it DB Schenker’s first entirely CO2-neutral City hub
DB Schenker is expanding its fleet of electrically powered vehicles through different partnerships
DB Schenker also became the first customer worldwide to receive the delivery of the first battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros as a series-production vehicle
The global logistics services provider will be using the 19-ton truck for general cargo deliveries in urban logistics operations
DB Schenker is adding another vehicle model to its sustainable fleet and taking another important step toward climate-neutral logistics

That means many of the people in the Neu-Isenburg camp will be moving on in the coming days to different parts of Germany

He said all he wanted was a good school for his daughter and a chance for family members left behind to join them
he did not want to give his last name because he was afraid of possible government reprisals against his family back home

which involved being smuggled through Turkey
part of which he and his daughter completed on foot
"I find people as angels here," he said in slightly broken English
The euphoria may give way to the more difficult and time-consuming reality of seeking asylum

A new survey of Syrian refugees in Germany has revealed that the majority blame Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the fighting in the country
which most say prevents them from returning home
Only eight percent of the surveyed refugees said they have no intention of returning to Syria
but just over half said that the removal of Assad was a pre-condition for their return
The study
carried out by the German-Syrian charity Adopt a Revolution
is the first major survey amongst Syrian refugees in Germany
The charity asked nearly 900 Syrian refugees why they had fled Syria
and under what conditions they would consider returning to the war-torn country
Fifty-two percent said they could only return to Syria with the departure of Assad
while 42 percent said they would return to Syria only after the departure of Islamic State militants
Free elections would be a condition for 42 percent of those surveyed
while the majority — 67.8 percent — simply said that the "the war has to stop" before they would consider returning
Eight percent said they did not want to go back to Syria
The majority of those questioned — 68.6 percent — answered that they had fled Syria over physical threats to their lives
fear of being arrested or taken hostage as well as barrel bombs
Just 13.3 percent said they had made the journey to Europe for economic reasons
When asked "Who is most responsible for the armed fighting in Syria?," 69.5 percent named Assad's regime
while 31.6 percent answered that ISIS is responsible
"The Federal Government and the EU must recognize that the biggest cause of flight in Syria is Assad and his barrel bombs," Green Party chairman, Cem Ozdemir, told the German newspaper Bild in response to the survey
"There can only be peace in Syria without Assad."
Photos: For Refugees in Greece, Safe Landing in Europe Provides Short-Lived Relief
German Chancellor Angela Merkel waived European Union rules for Syrian refugees in late August
allowing them to claim asylum in Germany regardless of which EU state they first arrived in
A majority of the refugees questioned fled Syria in 2015 (65 percent)
and a large majority were male (88 percent)
The largest age group was aged 16-25 years (45 percent)
The randomly chosen respondents came from all Syrian provinces
and the interviews were held in 12 centers housing arriving refugees in Berlin
Self-declared Syrians were asked to participate in the survey
with no documentation required to be shown

has published a report claiming that Syrian women and girls are being trafficked at refugee camps in Turkey
where they are sometimes sold to wealthy Muslim men from other nations as sex slaves
"Although the desperate victims are their Muslim sisters and brothers, wealthy Arab states do not take in refugees. The people in this area know too well that asylum seekers would bring with them problems, both social and economic," Gatestone said in a report
it is easier to buy Syrian children from Turkey
The think tank compiled several other reports revealing that many of the women and girls coming from Syria to Turkey's refugee camps
The report noted the dangers are present not only at the Turkish camps
but everywhere the Syrian refugees are setting in
with young girls between the ages of 15 and 20 being prostituted the most
"Women who have crossed the border illegally and arrive with no passport are at high risk of being kidnapped and sold as prostitutes or sex slaves
Criminal gangs bring refugees to towns along the border or into the local bus terminals where 'refugee smuggling' has become a major source of income," the report added
some Syrian parents are tricked into sending their daughters to what they believe is a better life in Turkey for somewhere between $700-$1,700
head of Mazlumder's Refugee Commission pointed out
often times the girls are trafficked into polygamous marriages by Turkish men
"Some men in Turkey take second or third Syrian wives without even officially registering them
These girls therefore have no legal status in Turkey
Economic deprivation is a major factor in this suffering
but it is also a religious and cultural phenomenon
as early marriage is allowed in the religion," Yilmaz said
The European Union has meanwhile reached a deal with Turkey where the Muslim majority nation will take back some of the refugees from Greece in exchange for the EU taking refugees out of Turkey and resettling them elsewhere
Al Jazeera reported on Monday that the deal has already started being implemented
with over 200 people placed on boats by Greek police and sent back to Turkey
warning that it will lead to further human rights abuses
"This is the first day of a very difficult time for refugee rights," Giorgos Kosmopoulos
"Despite the serious legal gaps and lack of adequate protection in Turkey
the EU is forging ahead with a dangerous deal
Turkey is not a safe third country for refugees
The EU and Greek authorities know this and have no excuse," he added
