With most cities across the globe witnessing a similar thread of developmental infrastructural projects—a lot of which are built using the same materials and embody comparable aesthetics as the rest of the world or at least the proximal region—it becomes necessary to ascertain that certain cultural and material aspects of the place can serve as distinct landmarks key occurrences and legendary personalities associated with cities are often adopted as the moniker for key spots in a city thus heralding a unique and historically relevant identity to the said town it is also essential to demarcate anew certain spaces that not only serve as visual markers of the region but also make space for residents to indulge in myriad activities and build memories which typically come to be in an organic and non-systematic manner often ensue amid civic projects that are accessible to the larger populace of the city The city of Neuenburg am Rhein holds an important spatial location, in the tri-border region of France, Germany and Switzerland In an attempt to spatially enhance the city and create solutions for a pre-existing topographical issue in the area as part of the State Garden Exhibition 2022 undertook projects to reorganise several areas within the city the Zähringer Bridge and the Berthold Tower are placed on the site referred to as Am Kronenrain which is located between the city centre and the redesigned green space Stadtpark am Wuhrloch Elaborating upon the issues that existed on site before MONO Architekten's involvement in the project barrier-free connection between the city centre and the public green space (Wuhrlochpark) The height difference of over nine metres between the road and the city level provided a very unsatisfactory urban situation the connection to the Rhine (which historically gave name to the city) was not present anymore as the river had been moved much further to the west Areal am Kronenrain looked more like a rear area than the city’s entrance inner-city traffic and the parking situation in general was dissatisfying.” MONO Architekten got involved in this project to create the ensemble of a parking garage, public space, bridge and tower, which not only fills the gap between the city centre and the green area but also helps link the two zones. Since this public architecture is positioned at the edge of the city it also serves as an impressive city entrance In conjunction with the connecting bridge and the parking garage the structure appears monumental and worthy of being delegated an auxiliary status next to the city centre “The areas behind the parking garage serve as a base for the new public space: the Münsterplatz one can access the Bertholdturm via the bridge or continue the journey further down to the park and the Rhine In addition to being an access point to the park the tower offers an observation platform with views of the picturesque landscape,” the studio shares The tower stands tall at 36 metres on a nearly square footprint at the city level and the other entrance via the level of the park One can either take the centrally placed elevator or the stairs to reach the intermediary floor that leads to the parking garage or move to the top to reach the viewing station offers an extended junction that serves as a viewing point Within the tower are information boards that delineate the history of the town and refer to other important landmarks in the region The architects also intend to extend the bridge as a ramp leading down to the parking level hence providing an extra barrier-free connection between the two structures with a terrace that is open for public usage and can alternatively be used as a viewing station is a three-storey structure designed to accommodate 231 parking spaces The perforated facade of the parking garage makes leeway for the influx of ample daylight and ventilation has walls that are nearly 40 centimetres deep which helps avoid the ingress of water when it rains “If water does enter during heavy rainfall events it is drained away via sloping roadways and gutter systems,” the studio shares its placement near the city centre helps avert the inner-city traffic “The Münsterplatz was created on top of the parking garage The previously abruptly ending street layouts now merge into a well-proportioned plaza the city plan accrues harmonious completion with the new western edge densification through small parcelling and mixed-use is planned,” the studio shares This mixed usage area will be barrier-free Almas forayed into writing to fulfil her nascent aspiration of exploring latent tales and forging immersive narratives Apart from researching and writing on and about the latest creations and creators from the architecture and design fraternity she endeavours to explore the socio-political cultural and temporal factors that impact and are impacted by every kind of design and creative intervention From vernacular knowledge to modern sustainability Qatar and others at La Biennale 2025 serve as living archives of alternative architectures STIR engages with the curators of the Togo Oman and Qatar pavilions—debuting at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025—on representation the book presents a fictional story depicting algorithms exercising control over humans and how this affects the built environment Tipnis shares how the toolbox democratises the practice of restoration via DIY resources to repair tangible urban heritage made of common building materials Exclusive preview for subscribers. Yet, getting from Point A to Point B is among the most carbon-intensive activities on planet Earth. Today, the travel industry contributes somewhere between an estimated 8% to 11% to total emissions globally Nations and individual travelers are recognizing that carbon output must be curtailed “There is momentum toward greater sustainability in the travel industry,” states Jesko Neuenburg global travel and aviation sustainability lead at Accenture and tour operators are turning to a wide range of technologies These include synthetic fuels and electric aircraft connected “smart” systems within the Internet of Things (IoT) hybrid low-emission cruise ships and vehicle fleets and artificial intelligence (AI) that can optimize resources and maintenance a partner at Boston Consulting Group: “In some cases sustainability is being viewed as a competitive advantage.” found that 83% of global travelers think sustainable travel is vital countries are enacting stringent mandates and regulations the news media is increasingly focusing on sustainability and investors are scrutinizing companies and their ESG initiatives “There’s a growing recognition that sustainable practices are essential,” Neuenburg says various sectors within the travel industry are approaching sustainability in different ways The aviation industry is transitioning to synthetic fuels hydrogen-powered aircraft and electric aircraft but companies are also adopting more advanced IoT technologies and AI that optimize flights and maintenance Airlines are also adopting lighter materials that reduce fuel consumption on aircraft and giving passengers the option of turning down meals before they board in order to reduce food waste Delta Airlines has also made major investments in synthetic aviation fuel. In addition, it is focusing on ways to build sustainability into daily operations. For instance, Delta is reducing onboard single-use plastic consumption by approximately 4.9 million pounds per year through recycled bedding the airline has committed to deploying 50% electric ground support equipment by 2025 Airlines are also beginning to use AI software that tracks weather data and flight information from other aircraft so that pilots can optimize a flight path the aircraft may travel a slightly longer distance but by avoiding headwinds or taking advantage of tailwinds the airline can decrease travel time and fuel consumption,” Neuenburg explains The sum of these technologies and approaches will drive sustainability gains over the coming years “When you combine these advances with a greater focus on optimizing fleet performance through AI and analytics you begin to make a real impact on carbon output In fact, Hurtigruten was the first cruise operator to commit to science-based targets It aims to become carbon-neutral by 2040 and reach net zero by 2050 “There are no viable technological solutions for achieving emissions-free marine travel so we are at the forefront of seeking greener alternatives,” explains Rikke Hegge Jørgensen vice president of ESG at Hurtigruten Group Working with European research institute SINTEF “The creation of zero-emission ships requires transforming a ship’s design The hospitality industry is also reducing its carbon footprint While giving guests the option to use bedding and towels for multiple days and turning to refillable soap and shampoo containers has gone mainstream many properties are adopting IoT and smart systems to manage air conditioning sensors can detect when a room is unoccupied and turn down or shut off an HVAC and fresh air filtering that reduces the need for electricity and air conditioning Yet, despite all these advances, travel companies have only started on the sustainability journey. When WTTC examined the broad industry it found that only 42% of companies had established clearly defined climate targets only 20% were aligned with the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) guidance Key obstacles included a fragmented regulatory landscape and lack of government support insufficient internal and external budgets for a net zero transition as well as dependency on existing infrastructure CIOs and other IT leaders at travel companies should keep an eye on technology and how it is maturing This may require taking a stake or buying other firms It might also require joining industry consortiums that focus on R&D focused on sustainable technology and practices some of these technologies aren’t quite there -- or they don’t yet scale well,” Neuenburg says and companies could easily find themselves falling behind the industry “It’s important to have visibility into sustainability performance It’s crucial to develop some type of roadmap and stay tuned so that you’re ready to use technologies when they become available.” Another possibility is to offer gamification techniques and rewards for customers that engage in sustainable behaviors This might take the form of a slight discount or rewards points “Business leaders must think creatively about how they can drive sustainable practices There are many ways to do this,” Neuenburg points out Lardet says that travel companies should plan for significant change over the next decade or two -- and adopt science-based targets to ensure that they are actually hitting meaningful goals “It will be necessary to adjust and adapt airport and cruise infrastructure and supply chains to match a changing world,” he says Concludes Hurtigruten’s Jørgensen: “If we don’t strive for a greener travel industry we risk losing the nature and wildlife that’s at the core of the adventures we love.” Reining in the Risks of Sustainable Sourcing and cybersecurity for numerous magazines and websites He is author of the books "The Internet of Things" and "Virtual Reality" (MIT Press) Rocket Content Smart Chat: Use GenAI to gain insights from unstructured enterprise data Palo Alto Networks ranks #1 in Advanced Cloud Firewalls Tests Security Without Compromise Better security Palo Alto Networks Cloud NGFW: The Gold Standard in Security This website is owned and operated by Informa TechTarget influences and connects the world’s technology buyers and sellers Informa PLC’s registered office is 5 Howick Place Archive Architecture Your support helps make our show possible and unlocks access to our sponsor-free feed the economy of Mozambique tipped into crisis The culprit was a government corruption scandal linked to more than $1 billion that officials borrowed in secret This was a high-profile example of hidden debt this kind of secret borrowing is a large and common problem among countries a pair of economists share their new research on hidden debt and how it affects everyday people Related Episodes: Why a debt tsunami is coming for the global economyWhat looks like a bond and acts like a bond but isn't a bond? vaccination campaigns across the EU are making good progress and incidence rates are falling almost everywhere in Europe we are still far from hopeful for summer holidays that are free of any restrictions and this is especially true for families whose children and adolescents are unlikely to have been vaccinated by then Germans are world champions in per capita gold ownership and thus obviously particularly fond of the precious metal a summer holiday spent along German rivers learning the art of gold panning could be a great alternative to travelling abroad The German legend “Nibelungenlied” refers to a sunken gold treasure as “Rheingold” (Rhine gold) and gold can indeed be found in the river Rhine near Bad Bellingen and Neuenburg with relatively simple methods like those used by gold panners during the California gold rush professional German gold prospectors also recommend certain sections of the rivers Elbe Aller or Grümpen are also well worth a look To ensure that the initial enthusiasm for gold panning does not quickly turn into frustration Gold panning classes are offered in various German regions and they often include a wide range of information on gold and gold prospecting As part of a guided tour through Dr Schade’s gold museum in Thuringia visitors can also watch a gold panning demonstration A number of other providers offer gold panning workshops countries and territories combining emergency assistance with long-term development while adapting our activities to the context and challenges of each location and its people There is a variety of ways in which people can support WFP’s mission to eliminate hunger from making a donation to bringing your expertise to our work on the frontlines The World Food Programme (WFP) is working to assist more than 50,000 people affected by the deadly violence in Palma, a town in Mozambique's troubled Cabo Delgado region  “It’s a real humanitarian catastrophe,” says Lola Castro WFP's Regional Director in Southern Africa, “people are heading all over the place — by boat WFP is distributing emergency food packages to “support the people wherever they are” and working with UNICEF to supply a “desperate population” with drinking water Cabo Delgado province already has the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in Mozambique with more than half of children malnourished — now thousands are walking into even deeper food insecurity “and it’s affecting Cabo Delgado’s neighbouring provinces.” She adds: “We don't have enough resources to support the scale-up that is needed.”  The conflict has been hammering northern Mozambique since 2017 when non-state armed groups attacked police stations in the town of Mocimboa da Praia as the country reeled from the devastating impact of two cyclones it has continued — throughout 2020 the violence escalated while the number of displaced people multiplied there were 18,000 people displaced — by December there were 500,000 people,” says Castro In February that figure reached nearly 670,000 people around 80,000 of whom are currently inaccessible because of the violence.  “It’s a very serious situation,” says Castro “We are talking about already desperate people who haven't been able to plan for three consecutive years A huge humanitarian tragedy is unfolding before us.”  Displaced people make efforts to reach their “family members in other places some find shelter in government resettlement centres — anywhere that they can find that is a safe shelter,” she adds.  It’s a sadly all-too-familiar narrative in northern Mozambique As WFP reported in October following a previous exodus: “Some flee into the bush surviving  by drinking river water and eating what they find along the way only to return and find their homes burnt to the ground forcing them to move southwards towards the provincial capital of Pemba and beyond 950,000 people in Cabo Delado and the neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Nampula are food insecure.  the current challenge is by no means surprising — the organization has long been at pains to point out the link between food insecurity violence and the mass movements of people seeking safety and food security previous calls for funds have not been answered.  The organization requires US$10.5 million on a monthly basis to provide assistance and US$98 million is required to provide support for the next 12 months WFP and the humanitarian community have renewed their call for unhindered access to all areas to deliver life-saving assistance Das Schlusslicht der Super League
