Faced with disrupted supply chains and steep revenue declines due to the coronavirus pandemic
one zoo is considering a drastic measure: turning some of its residents into food
The longer that the coronavirus lockdowns continue and the the more dire financial situations become
the more realistic it is that Neumünster Zoo in northern Germany will have to consider its absolute
last resort plan: slaughtering some of its zoo animals to feed others
Though it’s unclear which animals would be slaughtered first
a polar bear named Vitus — which stands nearly 12 feet tall — would be the last animal to go
“If — and this is really the worst
worst case of all — if I no longer have any money to buy feed
or if it should happen that my feed supplier is no longer able to supply due to new restrictions
then I would slaughter animals to feed other animals,” Kaspari told the news agency
Kaspari said she would rather euthanize the zoo’s animals than have them starve
CNN has reached out to Neumünster Zoo for comment
Now that the Neumünster Zoo is no longer generating revenue from visitors due to the national shutdown enacted on March 15
the zoo is currently operating solely through donations
The German government has started rolling out an economic rescue package worth up to €750 billion ($825 billion) — among the largest relief packages launched anywhere in the world
The package includes measures to spur lending to businesses
take stakes in companies and support furloughed workers
though it’s unclear whether zoos are receiving funds
“We’re an association and don’t get any city money
and all the state money we’ve applied for so far hasn’t arrived yet,” Kaspari told DPA
The Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ), a Berlin-based zoo association with members in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Spain, has asked Chancellor Angela Merkel for €100 million in emergency aid
The association said in a letter to the country’s government that many of the animals in its member zoos are endangered species and a part of international conservation breeding programs
“A possible loss of this valuable animal population would be a bitter setback for our struggle to conserve biodiversity and would therefore amount to a catastrophe,” VdZ President Jörg Junhold said in a statement
The association noted that unlike other facilities
zoos can’t shut down or limit operations to cut down on losses
Animals still have to be fed and cared for

And it could be the last birthday for the country's most famous polar bear in the capital city
Knut is expected to say good-bye to his Berlin home in 2009 or at the latest 2010
While fans are appealing to Berlin to keep Knut
but rather what has been legally agreed on
"We had borrowed a male polar bear from the Zoo in Neumuenster in order to breed cubs," Blaszkiewitz said
"We entered into a contract which stated that the first surviving cub is owned by the Neumuenster Zoo -- and that is Knut."
Neumuenster Zoo director Peter Druewa said he doesn't know where Knut is going and when he will be leaving Berlin
The future of the prominent polar bear is still written in the stars
but I'm not so sure about Easter," Druewa told the German news agency DPA
The European Endangered Species Program EEP
Various zoos have expressed interest: potential mates in Germany are Lara in Gelsenkirchen and Flocke in Nuremberg
But a zoo in Sweden is also keen to have Knut
is full with the polar bear couple Kap and Maika
"We don't have any more room," Druewa said
"For my part he can stay," said Blaszkiewitz
who in the past has not welcomed the Knut hype
I'll think about how things will go on financially and structurally when it's determined that Knut isn't leaving."
Rebuilding Knut's enclosure would cost several million euros
"Berlin will not only be losing its best ambassador
much to the regret of its international guests," said Christian Taenzler from Berlin Tourism Marketing
Despite the fact that Knut is anything but cuddly anymore -- weighing more than 200 kilos and two-and-a-half meters tall standing -- he still wows his fans
More than five million visitors have come to see Knut since his world premiere in March 2007
"The story of his upbringing by Thomas Doerflein stays in the minds and hearts of the people," Taenzler said
But one of his last wishes could still be fulfilled
"I hope Knut will move to a nice zoo outside of Berlin where he can be with his own kind and maybe even father children," Doerflein said in an interview prior to his death
"He should lose his close bond to humans and just be a polar bear."
who provoked fierce debate on animal rights
appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine at the height of his fame
and has latterly been diagnosed as being addicted to human laughter and applause
However, the latest twist in the Knut saga is
centred around money – and precisely who has the rights to the Knut goldmine
A legal battle between two zoos has begun in Berlin, with the Neumuenster zoo in northern Germany claiming it is due a slice of the Knut millions because the polar bear's father, Lars, resides there and, as such, it is the legal owner of Lars's first offspring.
Knut himself lives in Berlin zoo, where he is thought to have been the cause of a €5m (£4m) increase in revenue last year. Visitor numbers rose by 30%, making it the most successful year in the zoo's 163-year history.
Neumuenster zoo says that when the polar bear cub was born in 2006 a deal was made with the Berlin zoo over the issue.
However, while Berlin zoo says it recognises Neumuenster's ownership in principle, it maintains that does not give the zoo a right to any proceeds from Knut's incredible popularity.
Peter Druewa, the zoo director at Neumuenster, said in a statement that his zoo had tried to negotiate with Berlin zoo but was now looking to a court in Berlin for a ruling on the matter.
''We do not want to remove Knut from his environment,'' he said. ''But we have a right to our request for money.''
Knut won over the hearts and minds of Germans and went on to attract worldwide popularity after he was rejected by his mother, Tosca, soon after birth. A debate began about intervening to keep him alive
Zookeepers pulled him from a rock in the enclosure with an extended fishing net before placing him in an incubator to help him survive.
Most recently came the reports that Knut was addicted to human attention.
In March this year, Markus Röbke, one of the keepers who helped rear Knut, told Bild the bear had become so used to attention that he cried when there was no one near his enclosure. "Knut needs an audience," Röbke stated. "That has to change."
Since then efforts have been made for the polar bear to live a more independent existence.

Capture of former regional leader sparked demonstrations in Barcelona attended by tens of thousands

Catalonia‘s former president must remain in custody in Germany while the country’s courts decide whether to extradite him to Spain
Carles Puigdemont’s arrest on Sunday saw tens of thousands of Catalan demonstrators take to the streets in Barcelona
Fierce confrontations took place outside the central government offices as riot police beat flag-waving protesters with batons
Around 100 people were hurt across the Catalan region
including 23 members of the Mossos d’Escuadra police force
A court in the northern German town of Neumuenster said the formal requirements to detain Mr Puigdemont had been met by a European arrest warrant issued in Spain
The court denied him bail and said he posed a flight risk
concluding he had a “strong incentive” to try to travel to Belgium
where his chances of avoiding extradition may be greater
European rules call for a final decision on extradition within 60 days of the suspect’s arrest
Spain‘s government said Mr Puigdemont’s arrest, at a highway rest area south of the German-Danish border as he attempted to drive from Finland to Belgium, shows “nobody can infinitely mock justice.”
The country’s authorities accuse Mr Puigdemont, 55, of rebellion and misuse of public funds for organising an unauthorised referendum last year on independence for Catalonia.
Madrid deemed the referendum illegal and took over direct rule of the wealthy northeastern region after a symbolic declaration of independence by the Catalan parliament.
Authorities examining a European arrest warrant must determine whether the offence a suspect is accused of committing is equivalent to a criminal offence in the country where he was arrested.
Germany’s criminal code includes an offence which appears to be comparable to rebellion.
It calls for prison sentences for anyone who “undertakes, by force or through threat of force” to undermine the republic’s existence or change its constitutional order.
Mr Puigdemont and other Catalan separatists who are wanted by Spain after fleeing the country argue their movement has been entirely peaceful.

The expatriate put Luxembourg's multi-cultural scene at the heart of her English language film
which she wrote to give other actors in Luxembourg on-screen acting experience
Her energy and hard work paid off after she and a team of professionals
volunteers and sponsors ensured the film was successfully shot over three
“It was everything I hoped for but didn't dare to expect,” Tara said
People who came to work for me did so as volunteers but the level of attention and dedication and patience was wonderful.”
Oleander takes place at a charity fundraising ball held by a Luxembourg society couple
It was developed through a series of workshops and touches on a number of issues including feminism
The film was shot on a budget of 7,500 euros
raised through acting classes organised by Tara and via a crowdfunding platform
the team had just three days in which to shoot the film in the atmospheric abbey in the Grund
“They really pushed the production forward,” Tara said
adding: “Fitting everything into three days
Tara plans to start a new round of fundraising for the post-production work of the footage
It is hoped the film can be ready for release in 2015

mahnt Schleswig-Holsteins Umweltminister Jan Philipp Albrecht (Grüne)
„Bund und Länder stellen bereits zahlreiche finanzielle Hilfen bereit
Ab Anfang der nächsten Woche können voraussichtlich Förderanträge gestellt werden
dass im Zuge möglicher Lockerungen von Corona-Schutzmaßnahmen Tierparks unter bestimmten Auflagen zeitnah wieder geöffnet werden dürfen“
