Photo: CanvaPork contaminated with African Swine Fever virus (ASFv) was delivered from a finishing herd in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to a butcher in Neuruppin
The Ostprignitz-Ruppin district administration announced this on Thursday (June 13) in a press statement
The meat containing the virus came from a finishing herd in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Last week the news broke that a farm was found infected there on June 5
Epidemiological investigations subsequently revealed that 8 days previously
animals from the herd affected by ASF had been slaughtered and then delivered to the butcher in Neuruppin
The district’s authorities ordered an immediate production and sales halt for the butcher while the investigation into the exact whereabouts of the meat is being carried out
The company was able to fully prove the whereabouts of the meat delivery in question
The district commented that the disposal “took place under the supervision of the official veterinarian
both the production and sales halt for the butcher were immediately lifted.”
The authorities emphasised that the butcher is not to blame. In terms of animal disease control, measures immediately introduced were “unavoidable and absolutely necessary” in order to reduce the possible risk of the ASF pathogen spreading. The local media outlet MOZ.de enquired whether the meat had made it to consumers
He responded that “none of the infected meat ended up on the sales counter
but was disposed of under official supervision.”
The discovery of ASF on a German farm last week was the 9th in total
ever since the virus was found in Germany in 2020
There hadn’t been any outbreaks on farms since January last year
The latest farm outbreak sent some ripples through Germany
with stress about another potential case (which proved to be false alarm) and a withdrawn export permission for a slaughterhouse in Weissenfels
6 farms were found infected with ASF early June
with in total now 514 farms having reported the virus
Outbreaks on farms there are a seasonal happening in summer
mostly because then fresh yet infected hay is supplied to the pigs

2023 – The Croatian Football Federation has chosen the Neuruppin base camp for the Croatia national team during EURO 2024
The Neuruppin base camp includes the Mark Brandenburg Resort on the shore of Lake Ruppiner and the associated Volksparkstadion training ground
which is only a seven-minute drive from the hotel
The Croatian Football Federation selected four options in each of the three Euro regions on July 11
the HNS delegation visited the selected options
which placed Croatia in the northern region
and spokesperson Tomislav Pacak performed a final inspection of the best options in the region
In agreement with HNS president Marijan Kustić and coach Zlatko Dalić
Neuruppin was chosen as the best option for Croatia
“We always start from the fact that it is our duty to provide the national team with the best possible conditions
and therefore we started the whole process in 2022
we did not burden the national team staff with this topic before and during the qualifications
Neuruppin was one of the most sought-after camps in the entire Uefa catalog
and I am happy that our logistics managed it well and outpaced numerous other national teams
We are geographically positioned perfectly for the group stage
We will have an idyllic environment and excellent sports conditions
which is the most important thing for the national team,” emphasized the HNS president
Neuruppin is located 75 kilometers from the Olympic Stadium in Berlin
where Croatia opens EURO 2024 against Spain
Hamburg (225 kilometers) and Leipzig (227 kilometers) are also quickly accessible by bus
meaning Croatia will not need flights even to their games against Albania and Italy
The Mark Brandenburg Resort has an excellent fitness center and quality facilities for recovery
“I have great confidence in the logistics of the Federation
which was confirmed during the past competitions
as we had excellent conditions from Russia to Doha
I had a positive impression of this camp based on the detailed analysis provided because it offers exactly what we strive for the most – excellent sports conditions
from the fitness center to the training center
and we will not waste a lot of time traveling
so I am convinced that Neuruppin is a complete hit,” said coach Zlatko Dalić

The town has said that it has space for as many as 75 refugees
Neuruppin's declaration comes after a fire devastated the overcrowded Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos

"Integration is taking place and in my opinion
it is not only a duty of the newcomers but also a matter of giving and taking."

The microscopic remains of political prisoners executed by the Nazis and dissected by a controversial anatomist are to be buried in Berlin on Monday, more than seven decades after the end of the second world war.
About 300 tissue samples, each one no more than a hundredth of a millimetre thin and one square centimetre in size, were discovered in 2016 by descendants of Hermann Stieve, a former director of the Berlin Institute of Anatomy who specialised in research into the female reproductive system.
Though Stieve was not a member of the Nazi party, he developed a relationship with the regime whereby he was allowed to do research on recently executed political prisoners in return for helping to obliterate any traces of their remains.

where more than 2,800 people were put to the guillotine or hanged between 1933 and 1945

The bodies were picked up by car and sometimes ended up on Stieve’s operating table as soon as 15 minutes after death
the bodies were immediately cremated and buried in anonymous graves

A 101-year-old man believed to be a former concentration camp guard was convicted by a German court of being an accessory to 3,518 counts of murder
The man, identified only as Josef S. due to Germany’s strict privacy laws, was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison by The Neuruppin Regional Court, according to The New York Times
He's believed to be the oldest living person to be tried on charges from the Holocaust era
Josef S denied the allegations that he worked as an SS guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp
prosecutors were unable to directly link him to the deaths of the prisoners
A lawyer for the man said he would appeal the decision if the authorities attempt to send him to prison
It is also unclear if he'd get a medical commission clearing for his health that'd allow him to face confinement
The man claimed he worked as a farm laborer during the time convicted but it was determined that he aided in the murder machinery of the Nazis
Our grandmother lived 100 years.: Her legacy of saving Jewish children from Nazis lives on.
"You willingly supported this mass extermination with your activity," presiding Judge Udo Lechtermann said
"The court has come to the conclusion that
you worked in the concentration camp as a guard for about three years."
The man's conviction comes as a byproduct of two recent developments
One is that Germany's highest criminal court ruled this year that people who worked as guards at concentration camps could still be convicted
concentration camp records by the Red Army were examined in Moscow
"We go by the simple principle that murder does not have a statute of limitations," Thomas Will
a leader for the German government office who investigates Nazi-era crimes
"It is what’s right and of course it would have been what was right 70 years ago."
Sachsenhausen was established in 1936 just north of Berlin as the first new camp after Adolf Hitler gave the SS full control of the Nazi concentration camp system
It was intended to be a model facility and training camp for the labyrinthine network that the Nazis built across Germany
More than 200,000 people were held there between 1936 and 1945
Tens of thousands of inmates died of starvation
as well as through medical experiments and systematic SS extermination operations including shootings

Suburbs of pale stucco houses peter out into birch and pine forest

We’re making the 90-minute journey to Neuruppin
the birthplace of 19th-century author Theodor Fontane
little-known to English readers but sometimes called the German Charles Dickens
Fontane was born on 30 December 1819 – 200 years ago this month – and the town has spent the year celebrating his bicentennial with events
I first discovered Fontane for myself after moving to Berlin five years ago
I read translations of his famous novels – Effi Briest and The Stechlin – and was then transfixed by his enthralling non-fiction five-volume work
Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg (Rambles through Brandenburg state)
Fontane took inspiration from the English habit of documenting the minutiae of rural life
and published the Wanderungen between 1862 and 1889
to render his home region in the same style
In a country where 20th-century history weighs heavily
Fontane offers a long gaze on the landscape
I was transported to a time when the wilderness of the east became the centre of the Prussian empire
to when Berlin industrialised and the state of Brandenburg emptied as workers sought jobs in urban factories
a century after the same had started to happen in Britain
The natural world he described – with birch and alder stands in sandy soil and marshes so thick that cattle would become mired in mud – remains visible in traces today
View image in fullscreenHeinrich Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) is regarded as Germany’s Charles Dickens
Photograph: De Agostini Picture Library/Getty ImagesI’m visiting Neuruppin to follow one of Fontane’s journeys
taking footpaths from his birthplace and along the shores of the lake
looking for a thread between his past and Germany’s present
He could hardly have imagined that his hometown would become known for him: as Fontanestadt (Fontane Town)
Crowds disembark from the train and gather for local tours – Fontane’s old haunts are handily marked out for visitors – but I wander the town alone
Where he described the town bathed in summer warmth
I find cold December sun pouring over the cobbled streets
Calling Neuruppin pretty would be an understatement: rebuilt in neoclassical style following an enormous fire in 1787 (leaving it “like a loaf of bread of which only the heels remained”
with wide streets and stately pastel townhouses
Miniature Christmas decorations hang from lamp posts
and a small farmers’ market occupies the central square
the traces of the region’s more recent history linger: I head for the water
past the Apotheke above which Fontane was born
following Karl-Marx-Strasse and passing Friedrich-Engels Strasse – the town served as a garrison for Soviet troops from 1945 until the Wall fell
View image in fullscreenNeuruppin’s main square: the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1787
Photograph: Jessica Lee/GuardianFontane’s stories centred on the everyday: the details of the landscape and the lives of villagers
the intrigues of local counts and crown princes
He wrote of picturesque villages tucked into woodlands
trading stories of the Seven Years’ or Napoleonic wars
a wellness spa named for Fontane rises from the water
cold Nordic wood and metal against the town’s Prussian houses
Luxury apartments are under construction next door
paved roads turn to sand and a forest track wanders off northward
Fontane travelled often by boat; I decide to test the water with an icy swim
I’ve traced his boat journeys south of Berlin in much the same way and found lakeside villages still quiet despite the capital city on their doorsteps
The countryside here still manages to feel remote
Lake Ruppin is still as Fontane described – sandy-bottomed and clear
under gentle slopes that seem at odds with the flat fields beyond
I can see the length of it – almost 10km end to end
View image in fullscreenRuppiner See makes for a bracing swim
I walk a few more kilometres until the lake narrows to a canal
and then arrive at another lake altogether: Molchowsee
lined with crumbling dachas and newly built mansions
Fontane said that despite its lack of mountains this land of lakes – the Ruppiner Schweiz (Ruppiner Switzerland) – is beautiful because of its wealth of clear waterways and vast forests
this watery landscape could offer more than enough
The sun dips low on the horizon so I turn back toward the railway station
As I ride home to the city past the unchanged fields
surrounded by refreshed spa visitors and Berliners clutching their novels
I see a sparrow hawk hunting along a hedgerow and count baubles of mistletoe high among the trees

Israeli graffiti designer and street artist from Tel Aviv
invited by the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) to decorate various free walls and other surfaces on campus and in Neuruppin
Not least his designs for plaster strips have made him famous worldwide
Eric Hoffmann contacted Dede in February and suggested a joint project with the Brandenburg Medical School: “Strips of plaster serve and help to heal injuries and close wounds and may be seen as symbols of medical care in general – thus of the MHB as well
The MHB was after all founded to heal and close an open wound in Brandenburg – the shortage of physicians and psychotherapists
This is why Dede’s artistic bandaid designs fit in well with the MHB
Dede was excited about the idea of collaborating with a medical school right from the start
His planned visit to Neuruppin had to be postponed repeatedly
But following a stay in Prague in November
Dede finally came to Neuruppin for close to one week
is that he frequently includes site-specific elements as clear references to their place of origin
This applies to his many variants of bandaids and plaster strips and also to the wild animals Dede often depicts in his designs
but in the case of Neuruppin Dede opted for wolves in allusion to the fact the Brandenburg has more packs of wolves than any other part of Germany
He selected red and grey for his colour scheme in adherence to the corporate design of the MHB.”
Hoffmann is pleased to note the widespread approval and support for this project
The local clinic group assumed part of the costs for material and Dede enjoyed free accommodation and meals on the hospital grounds
Further support came from the association of MHB supporters
Günter Fleischer welcomed this additional opportunity to draw public attention to the MHB by way of visual art
Three bus shelters in the vicinity of the cultural centre Kulturkirche Neuruppin were released for the street art project
and also parts of a wall near the townhall
who utilizes various mediums to communicate within the public arena
He started creating his works after finishing his military service
and continued to develop and elaborate them while completing his undergraduate studies at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design
Nowadays his works can be viewed at galleries
various art events and in the streets of art capitals around the world
And since end of November 2021 in Neuruppin
