Danish shipping company Norden has completed a significant biofuel trial with MASH Makes
The trial marks the “world’s first” commercial vessel using biofuel produced via a carbon-negative process
The trial involved a B20 biofuel blend in the auxiliary engine of a vessel
The ship made a round-trip journey from Singapore to Brazil
Results indicate that MASH Makes’ biofuel is compatible with existing marine systems
This potential can reduce reliance on fossil fuels in specific maritime applications
MASH Makes claims the trial provides a viable path for shipowners to cut emissions
They suggest this can be done without new infrastructure
The next phase will test the biofuel in main engines
The company plans to expand its use across commercial fleets
stated that the trial verifies the fuel’s suitability for marine engines
He called it an important step toward operational integration
said their biofuel meets the shipping industry’s technical requirements
making it a seamless and scalable alternative
Norden acquired a minority stake in MASH Makes
This acquisition aimed to secure access to renewable fuels
MASH Makes also produces biochar as a byproduct of biofuel production
the company generates 1.8 tonnes of biochar
Each tonne of biochar sequesters 3.14 tonnes of CO2 in the soil
This establishes a clear link between fuel production and carbon removal
The biofuel producer is collaborating with the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping
They aim to demonstrate how the center’s methodology applies to biochar and biofuel
The collaboration focuses on evaluating emissions and transparent accounting of co-products
This information contributes to overall maritime decarbonization goals

Shipping company Norden has successfully completed a voyage using biofuel produced in a process claimed as carbon-negative
The Danish company managed to carry out a journey from Singapore to Brazil with a vessel powered by 65 tonnes of a fuel blend that also included 20% of biofuel produced by MASH Makes.
Specialized in biochar and biofuel production, MASH Makes is an Indo-Danish company that uses agricultural biomass as feedstock for its operations.
By putting biomass through a high-temperature
the company is able to annually produce 3,400 tonnes of ISO8217-compliant bio-oil
with a vision of reaching gigaton carbon removal levels by 2040
each produced tonne of biofuel is coupled with the production of 1.8 tonnes of biochar
which has the capacity to sequester 3.14 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 into the soil
means that every tonne of MASH Makes biofuel is linked to the permanent removal of 5.7 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide into the ground
MASH Makes is working on expanding its Karnataka-based Udupi District site
aiming to grow the annual production capacity to 7,000 tonnes of biofuel and 14,000 tonnes of biochar
the company also provides local farmers with its biochar product
helping them increase the crop yields from their land

in collaboration with renewable energy company MASH Makes
has completed the “world’s first” commercial vessel trial using biofuel produced from a carbon-negative process
The trial involved using a B20 biofuel blend in the auxiliary engine of a vessel operating on a round-trip voyage from Singapore to Brazil
confirming that the MASH Makes biofuel is “technically a drop-in fuel
compatible with existing systems and capable of reducing reliance on fossil fuels in specific marine applications”
the results of this trial point to a practical path for shipowners to cut emissions without waiting for new infrastructure
The next phase will include testing the biofuel in main engines
expanding its application across commercial fleets
“This trial proves that MASH Makes’ biofuel is suitable for marine engines
and it marks an important milestone towards bringing the fuel into our operation,” said Henrik Røjel
Head of Decarbonization and Climate Solutions at Norden
added: “Our biofuel meets the technical requirements of the shipping industry and can be used in unmodified engines
In 2023, Norden acquired a minority stake in MASH Makes to secure access to renewable fuels, specifically bio-oil, at favourable pricing.
As explained, for every tonne of biofuel produced, MASH Makes also generates 1.8 tonnes of biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material applied to soil. In return, each tonne of biochar locks 3.14 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere into the ground, creating a direct link between fuel production and carbon removal.
This means every tonne of MASH biofuel is associated with 5.7 tonnes of CO2 being sequestered permanently in the soil.
The biofuel producer is currently working with the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping to demonstrate how the center’s life cycle methodology applies to its biochar and biofuel pathway. The collaboration focuses on assessing full system emissions and exploring how co-products like biochar, with carbon removal potential, can be transparently accounted for, and how this contributes toward maritime decarbonization goals.

Profitable first quarter saw Norden’s operating division return to get back into the black
Norden has been taking a cautious approach to freight markets in 2025, but its overall outlook is positive, its chief executive told TradeWinds.
The Copenhagen-listed owner-operator, which has a fleet of bulkers and product tankers, on Thursday announced net profit of $33m for the first quarter of this year.
Chief executive Jan Rindbo called the net result “solid”, particularly given that MR product tanker rates were down by about 44% year on year during the period.

A sample consisting of an intensely altered (silica-clay-sericite) porphyritic intrusion located 850 meters from the Sunrise Mine adit that returned 4.26 g/t Gold (Table 1; Fig
This sample is significant because it demonstrates that gold mineralization extends well beyond the carbonate replacement style gold-copper-silver mineralization that was mined historically at Sunrise (see below)
The gold-bearing porphyry intrusions suggest that there is a large epithermal to porphyry target footprint to be tested with drilling
Two other samples collected from the Sunrise mine waste dumps confirm very significant precious metal tenor in vuggy silica (3.2 g/t Au; 72.1 g/t Ag) and hydrothermal breccia samples (4.2 g/t Au; 9.2 g/t Ag)

Danish owner-operator has lifted the corporate veil higher on its bulker and tanker divisions
Analysts have praised Danish bulker and tanker group Norden after it opened up more on its financial reporting.
The Copenhagen-listed owner-operator logged “strong” first-quarter results, beating market expectations as its trading unit broke even after earlier losses.
Clarksons Securities noted that the company has initiated more comprehensive reporting on its trading activities.

The long-term goal: removing a gigatonne of CO₂ by 2040
Danish shipping company Norden has sold five vessels since, retaining 20 owned vessels and 79 long-term leases with purchase options in its fleet.
Out of the five sold vessels, three of them were declared purchase options and comprised of two Kamsarmaxes and one Ultramax vessel.
In addition to the declared purchase options, we have also sold one MR tanker vessel from the active owned fleet, as well as one Ultramax newbuilding which is scheduled to deliver at the end of 2025.
The Ultramax newbuilding will be leased back on time-charter with extension and purchase options.
Following these transactions, NORDEN’s asset portfolio will consist of 20 owned vessels and 79 long-term leases with purchase options, 39 of which can be declared before the end of 2025.

Company says biofuel is ready for main engine testing after trial of drop-in 20% biofuel blend on a Capesize dry cargo vessel’s auxiliary engine
Danish shipping company Norden is hailing the success of a biofuel trial on board one of the company’s dry cargo vessels.
Norden trialled a 20% biofuel blend on an auxiliary engine on board Nord Power during a round-trip sailing from Singapore to Brazil and back, calling the trial a ’milestone’ achievement.
“Drop-in biofuels are an important part of Norden’s transition to lower emissions for our customers in the here and now. This trial proves that MASH Makes’ biofuel is suitable for marine engines, and it marks an important milestone towards bringing the fuel into our operation,” said Norden head of decarbonisation and climate solutions Henrik Røjel.
Norden said the vessel’s roundtrip from Singapore to Brazil used 65 tonnes of 20% of a biofuel blend in its auxiliary engine. The biofuel blend, categorised as B20 for the percentage of biofuel the blend contains, is produced by a company called MASH Makes, in which Norden holds a minority stake. Norden said the two companies have worked closely together to validate the biofuel for marine usage.
MASH Makes said its biofuel production process, using agricultural waste and a process called pyrolysis, is carbon negative. Pyrolysis is heating of organic material without oxygen to create a refinable liquid that can be blended with or used to replace fossil fuels.
"MASH Makes biofuel is produced through pyrolysis, which converts agricultural residues into renewable energy. It’s comparable with ISO8217 marine fuel standards and designed to work as a drop-in fuel for the shipping industry," the company says of its product.
According to MASH Makes, every tonne of its biofuel is associated with 5.70 tonnes of CO2 being sequestered permanently in the soil.
"For every tonne of biofuel produced, MASH Makes also generates 1.80 tonnes of biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material applied to soil. Each tonne of biochar locks 3.14 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere into the ground, creating a direct link between fuel production and carbon removal," the company said.
Both Norden and MASH Makes confirmed in separate posts on their respective LinkedIn pages that the "next step will be to trial biofuel on a main engine".
When asked, a MASH Makes spokesperson said the company is in the planning stage for future trials but did not go into detail.
Norden has now also raised its 2025 full-year market guidance on company performance, expecting net profitability of at least US$50M and up to US$130M for the year, "on the back of the increased gains from sales of vessels and good operational performance".

Rasmus Saltofte’s upcoming departure follows reorganisation of Norden’s asset-light division
Norden’s head of dry cargo will step down by the end of 2025 after almost two decades at the owner-operator.
Rasmus Saltofte joined Norden as a trainee and was promoted to head of dry cargo in April last year, having previously been head of handysizes worldwide.
Norden CEO Jan Rindbo told TradeWinds that Saltofte had made the decision to leave following the plan to reorganise the asset-light Freight Services & Trading (FST) business unit under the oversight of new group COO Anne Jensen.
Deal will involve burning biofuel on a Norden-operated vessel
Meta has signed a maritime fuel offtake agreement with Danish shipping company Norden to acquire carbon offset credits
The emission solution works by burning biofuel on a Norden-operated vessel
with the emission reduction subsequently allocated to Meta using a book and claim chain of custody system
“Our book and claim solution allows customers of marine transportation across the globe to take advantage of emissions reductions from biofuels
even when biofuels are not physically available to be bunkered on a specific trading route or voyage,” said Anne Jensen
Norden will facilitate the emission reduction through Smart Freight Centre’s Voluntary Market Bases Measure Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting
The emissions reduction is authenticated by an independent verifier
and transacted on an external registry through 123Carbon
said: “Innovative solutions such as those that Norden is providing are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonize our value chain at the pace and scale required to achieve our emissions reduction targets.”
Meta signed several carbon removal agreements in 2024 to decarbonize its value chain. In October, Meta announced plans to invest up to $35 million in carbon removal projects over the next 12 months
Before this, in September
Meta signed a reforestation-based carbon removal deal with Investment bank BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group
Meta is also part of Frontier Climate – a consortium that makes aggregated purchases of carbon capture credits from several companies
Elsewhere, the company is developing its own direct air capture technology to capture carbon at its data centers

Norden’s operated fleet has booked its first positive operating margin since late 2023, adding to the company’s overall profit for the first quarter.
The Danish owner-operator booked net profit of $33m, down from $62m year on year.
Gains from vessel sales contributed $3m to the bottom line, compared with $55m a year ago.
Danish owner used blend made in India from cashew nut shells for voyage from Singapore to Brazil
Norden has made what is said to be the world’s first voyage using biofuel produced from a carbon-negative process.
A Norden-chartered bulker operated on a round trip from Singapore to Brazil, using 65 tonnes of a blend containing 20% biofuel from Indian producer MASH Makes in its auxiliary engine.
The producer told TradeWinds the vessel was the 178,700-dwt capesize Nord Power (built 2012), owned by Hayfin Capital Management and since renamed GH Callas.

Bulletin contributing editor Dawn Stover spoke with Norden about the security and integrity of US elections
(This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.)
Dawn Stover: Is there a conceivable way that a foreign country or other entity could steal a US election or severely compromise it
Lawrence Norden: The intelligence agencies have been warning for some time that Russia
and Iran are attempting to interfere in our election
There are basically three kinds of threats against our elections: cyberthreats
I think it would be extremely difficult to change vote totals
but less difficult to undermine confidence in those vote totals
including through a cyberattack but also through information warfare
which are often coming—not always—domestically
Iran was connected to threats to election officials in the last election
The threatening environment that we’ve seen for election officials has led many to just leave the field entirely
I think we are in a stronger position than ever to defend ourselves
but there’s no question that there’s a real threat to the integrity of our elections from foreign governments—as well as from some domestic actors
Stover: How does US election security compare with other countries around the world
it depends if you’re talking about cybersecurity
the US is extremely secure compared to other nations
We made massive progress over the last decade or so in terms of securing our physical infrastructure
That’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement
but a decade ago a good portion of Americans voted on paperless voting systems
there will be a paper record of their vote
and most states audit those paper records to make sure the vote totals are accurate
There has been a huge investment in resiliency. So we saw with the CrowdStrike failure, it had an impact on some voting in Arizona, but election officials were prepared with provisional ballots, with backup paper, to be able to continue voting.[2] None of the voting machines in Arizona were connected to the internet
but things like checking people in and making sure that they could vote during that period were possible because of the resiliency that has been built up over recent years
Stover: But voters still seem to worry a lot about the hardware and software used in elections
especially because of these security breaches that you mentioned
which seem to be affecting everything from cellphone data to airline flights
How can election officials reassure people that black boxes are trustworthy
I think the best way to reassure them is to note that we have paper ballots for virtually every vote
and that we audit them afterward to make sure that the machines are recording votes accurately
I think part of the problem we have is that most people don’t understand the intricacy of election administration
so they’ll hear about things that aren’t voting machines—like electronic poll books
or voter registration databases—and there are occasionally successful attacks against those systems
The main thing for people to know is that there are backups that election officials keep and that they can turn to
election officials have gotten better at sharing information ahead of time
One of the things about disinformation around elections is it’s generally the same themes over and over again in each election
and people who are looking to undermine confidence in our elections use a news hook about there being some kind of glitch or cyberattack
they use it to fit one of these tropes—whether it’s about voter fraud or voting machine accuracy or mail voter accuracy or electronic poll books
They have a pre-existing story that people have heard before
and they take the newshook and they attach it to that story
What election officials have gotten much better at is telling the story about how elections work
so that people are inoculated: providing tours of their offices
doing videos or writing articles about the security measures that they have in place
and making sure that those stories get out to their voters
That’s critical in pushing back against the fears that people have and that some people are preying on when they’re trying to undermine confidence in our elections
Stover: It sounds like some of the recommendations that you and others have made—like replacing paperless electronic machines and conducting these post-election audits—have already happened
Are there other important things that still haven’t happened
but the steps they’re taking have varied depending on the jurisdiction and the resources that they’ve had
56 percent—reported increasing cybersecurity protections for election technology
Updating their polling-place contingency plans was another one that was very high
is coordinating with law enforcement and community groups ahead of time to create emergency response plans
and about 41 percent of election officials reported doing that since 2020
But I would say more of that kind of pre-planning is really critical
because AI has spread like wildfire throughout a lot of business sectors
Norden: There are a number of ways that AI might impact the election
I think what’s gotten a lot of attention is deepfakes with candidates
but in terms of election administration and the way the election is run
are misinformation—maybe purporting to be from election officials about our elections
which can happen on social media through the use of AI—and using AI to try to fool election workers
whether through phishing emails or pretending to be somebody that is in the election office or a deepfake phone call
There’s a lot that election officials can do
like taking control of their online presence—making sure they have their own verified social media accounts and are looking out for fake accounts
which at this point many election officers do
You want to make sure that the public knows where to go to get accurate information
having a coordinated plan is critical if there is false information spreading—whether it’s the result of AI or not—and knowing that there are community leaders who can reach voters
it’s just that they may be more sophisticated
or it may be easier for somebody without many resources to create a misleading video or fake social media accounts
Roads and bridges are aging; isn’t voting infrastructure aging
What would it take to bring voting machines
and other election infrastructure up to date
Norden: The problem with elections—and I think it’s mostly for the better—is that many of our systems are computerized in a way that they weren’t 30 or 40 years ago
So the voting machines that you’re voting on are computers
and they require regular replacement and upkeep
We’ve had a fair amount of investment in our election infrastructure in the last two years
Congress invested about a billion dollars or a little bit more since 2016
I mentioned that fact that we’ve pretty much moved to replace all the paperless systems in the US
but we need to replace these machines every one to two decades
and the same thing for replacing registration databases
As potential cyberattacks become more sophisticated
If you have a database that’s 20 or 30 years old
it just becomes extremely slow if you don’t upgrade the system
but I would say it’s going to be hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that will be needed over the next few years
Stover: You mentioned earlier that there are around 10,000 separate jurisdictions at the state and local level
Does that suggest trying to have some kind of standardized election system
or is it a good thing to not have all of our eggs in one basket
There’s no question that the decentralized system we have in some ways adds a layer of security
because it’s not like you can go to one place and try to change all the votes
Whereas that might be possible in some other countries where there’s one centralized place that you’re tallying votes
it’s not going to be possible to pinpoint that one place to attack
many of our election jurisdictions—because there are so many—are quite small and don’t have [the] resources to protect their infrastructure that we might like to see
and maybe don’t have all of the cybersecurity that we would like to see
I do think creating some kind of floor of security—a minimum standard for any jurisdiction that has voting machines
that is tallying votes—would be a good thing
Stover: Are there certain places that are at the greatest risk
the smaller jurisdictions have the least resources
So you actually have many election offices where there’s only one person working
and it may not even be their full-time job
But it’s often the smaller jurisdictions that may have the most challenges in terms of keeping up to date and making sure that they have all of the protections that are recommended
The creation of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency—and having CISA provide assistance to all jurisdictions of all sizes
if they want it—has been very helpful in bringing up that floor
Stover: Is that an agency that Project 2025 is proposing to get rid of? I think you’ve warned that Project 2025 could be a threat to election security.[4]
I’m actually writing something about that now
Their recommendation is to gut the agency and to disperse it among several other agencies
they have focused on the election security work of the agency
CISA has been critical in upgrading election infrastructure security over the past six or seven years
Stover: Are there any other provisions in Project 2025 that you’re worried about from an election standpoint
Project 2025 talks about limiting CISA’s role to assessing cyber hygiene
and there’s a lot that CISA does beyond that
as we’ve seen attempts at threats to election workers but also attempts to access election equipment
and that’s a cyber threat even if it doesn’t fall within the gambit of cyber-hygiene
Norden: I think what they mean by that is basically looking to ensure that there’s multi-factor authentication and other practices that would make it more difficult for somebody to remotely commit a cyberattack against the system
So that is one [concern]: the physical security assessments that CISA does for election officials
which [Project 2025] seems to suggest it would no longer be doing
CISA provides a lot of guidance to election officials
it’s not clear under Project 2025 if they’re suggesting that should be eliminated
And then the other thing that it suggests is that the agency should step back from its work when it gets closer to election time
which is actually the exact opposite of what you want the agency to be doing
It’s exactly when infrastructure might be attacked
and when election officials are going to need the assistance of CISA
not just to track and assess what’s happened but to recover from any type of cyberattack
Stover: You recently wrote in The Atlantic that government agencies should act fast to warn social media companies about interference in elections, especially now that the Supreme Court has cleared the way for the government to talk to these companies. What would you like the government to be telling tech companies?[5]
the kind of briefings and warnings that federal agencies have been giving social media companies about what they’re seeing have been less robust than they were in 2020
So I would like to see a return to the level of detail in reporting to social media companies
of what they’re seeing in terms of foreign efforts to interfere in the election
making sure that they are communicating to social media companies—and to the public
frankly—the kind of foreign interference efforts they’re seeing
I have taken heart in the fact that [the Office of the Director of National Intelligence] issued a report at the beginning of July on what they’re seeing in terms of foreign interference
and they’ve said that they’re going to release one in the coming days—100 days out of the election—and will be doing so on a regular basis ahead of the election
Stover: The Brennan Center has warned that the coming election is not just about the races that are at stake, but also about the future direction of American democracy itself.[6] What is the threat to democracy
Norden: I’ll take one example that is very close to home for me
because I do a lot of work with election officials
They have been under threat for the last few years
I think 38 percent in our last poll said that they’d been threatened
and that really is the result of lies that circulate about how elections work and what the job of election officials is
Some election officials have been subject to politically motivated investigations that [district attorneys] or law enforcement brought
[These investigations] were eventually dismissed or rejected by grand juries
but still upended the lives of the election officials
who are among the lowest-paid government workers
I do worry about that becoming more intense in this election
Project 2025 talks about empowering the Department of Justice to bring actions against election officials for decisions it disagrees with
that’s one of the things I mean when I say democracy is at stake
If we’re going to have threats to elections supercharged and weaponized by our own federal government
We need people to stay in their jobs who are committed to being fair
and to not being swayed by politically motivated threats of prosecution
Stover: If workers who are worried about that have quit
has that left a vacuum into which people who are maybe less fair have moved
Norden: I think we’ve been pretty lucky so far
there’s no question that there are cases of people who have been election deniers who have come onto local commissions that oversee boards of elections
the people who have stepped up and replaced outgoing election officials have been people who believe in impartiality
and in many cases worked in elections themselves
we had a series of very high-stakes elections for secretary of state—the people that are the chief election officials for their states—and in all of the battleground states and pretty much across the country
election deniers lost and the people who were arguing for free and fair elections won
that if you have a federal government—a Department of Justice
an FBI—that is weaponized against these folks
that really becomes a lot more challenging
The good news story of the last few years is that our democratic institutions have proved pretty resilient
in a way that there hadn’t been in the recent past
in our democracy and in making sure we preserve it
called the Committee for Safe and Secure Elections
that is mostly made up of law enforcement and election officials working together to think about how to increase security
to make sure that there’s better communication and contingency planning
and those kind of networks didn’t exist a few years ago
I think it speaks to the fact that there are a lot of Americans who really care about protecting our democracy and civil society
They’re not necessarily people in the government who are directly charged with these issues
but they have stepped up—and that gives me a lot of hope

a routine software update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike caused a global Microsoft outage that disrupted airlines
Voter databases in Arizona and several other states were affected
The Republican National Committee and the Arizona Republican Party demanded answers about the closure of some voting centers in Arizona’s Maricopa County on July 19 (early voting in the county began on July 3 and continued to Election Day on July 30)
Maricopa County election officials said the outage only affected the voter check-in system for early in-person voting

the danger of concentrated private interests capturing our political system has never been more apparent
None of this means the situation is hopeless. Musk’s depredations are already encountering legal and political resistance
and it’s likely that the political pendulum will eventually swing back
those who care about the security of American democracy will need to be ready with fresh
bold solutions that meet the political moment
to ensure that our political system can actually respond to the needs of regular Americans
the question remains: How did we get to the point of having a tech billionaire campaign donor openly running huge parts of the federal government
including the Treasury Department’s payment processing system
through which trillions of dollars in taxpayer funds flow each year
gutting the independence of key federal agencies and holding that former presidents are immune from prosecution even for certain blatantly illegal abuses of power.
But their power is not just in their massive wealth. As the journalist Ezra Klein has noted
the billionaires given front row inaugural seats were more than just the wealthiest men alive —they were among the biggest players in the so-called “attention economy.”
Any of these changes by themselves would pose a challenge to the American political system
with a decentralized electoral system that is not easy to fully subvert
as we’ve seen in previous eras of political corruption from the Gilded Age to Watergate
those in power are likely to overreach and prompt a backlash that will open the door to reform
The challenge to resisting a new American oligarchy is not to convince the public that there is a problem
The typical solutions we and others resort to when discussing the outsized political role of billionaires and corporations include ethics reforms
All of these actions remain necessary but nowhere near sufficient
the need to overturn Citizens United and other harmful Supreme Court decisions on campaign finance has never been clearer
unlimited money from a handful of donors can continue to pour into our campaigns
further reinforcing the ability of those with the most money to extract profits from our political system
We must also re-establish the bedrock principle that nobody—including the president—is above the law
too many avenues for corruption will remain.
There are many reasons to explore such policies
but few are more important than ensuring this private power does not come to exceed the strength of our democracy.
Cycles of corruption and excess followed by waves of reform are an enduring feature of American history, from the Progressive Era reforms that followed the Gilded Age to the passage of major ethics and campaign finance legislation after Watergate
If there is any silver lining to the excesses we are now seeing, it’s that the stakes are now much harder to ignore. After Trump’s first term, Congress tried to pass democracy reform legislation that included some popular campaign finance reforms. Despite coming close, it didn’t pass
It is now up to elected leaders and civil society to push back against the abuses of power we are seeing and lay the groundwork to fix our political system and make it work for everyone
Congress must do more to fully reassert its authority as the “first branch” of our government
That means not only restraining the worst impulses of the Trump Administration
but ultimately passing bold campaign finance
and rule of law reforms that restore meaningful guardrails against self-dealing by those in power
undo as much as possible the damage done by Citizens United and other Supreme Court decisions (and ultimately lay the groundwork for reversing them)
and finally place meaningful checks on both presidential power and the emerging tech oligarchy
There is still much we do not know about how the next four years will unfold
But one thing is clear: failing to address Americans’ concerns and restore their sense of ownership over their own government could be a mistake from which our democracy might not recover

a provider of quality hay handling products for growers
The Norden AlfaTed addresses a specific challenge in the hay equipment industry
Preparing alfalfa for baling while maintaining quality has long been a challenge
requiring a balance between speed and gentleness
Reel-type tedders offer a more reliably gentle solution compared to typical rotary tedders
these reel-type tedders have come with a significant trade-off: ground speed
The reel on the AlfaTed features six bars of teeth and an industry-leading cam system
allows operators to quickly fluff windrows while minimizing damage to the hay
the best advancements come from revisiting what worked in the past," says Kenny Kuhns
"We've partnered with John Russell and Wayne Vogel to bring their refined and optimized reel-type tedder design to market in 2025."
While rotary tedders excel at achieving quick dry-down
further handling can cause significant damage
The reel design of the AlfaTed moves the window of opportunity for tedding to later in the dry down cycle and promotes further dry-down with minimal leaf loss
The AlfaTed also features a 10 foot working width
Danish shipping company Norden has signed a sustainable maritime fuel offtake agreement with technology conglomerate Meta

Danish shipping giant Norden has revealed new activity in the sale-and-purchase market with five transactions recently closed in the dry and wet segments
The move is in line with the company’s intention to realise asset values
the Jan Rindbo-led owner and operator said
The Hellerup-based company has let go of two unnamed kamsarmax bulkers and one ultramax
and sold one MR tanker from its owned fleet
Multiple shipbroking outfits have recently linked Norden’s 2015-built MR2 Nord Swift and chartered-in 2020-built kamsarmaxes Sentosa Challenger and Sentosa Spirit to Greek buyers in deals worth around $97m in total
Norden said it has also agreed to sell one of its ultramax newbuilds expected to deliver at the end of 2025
The ship will be leased back on time charter with extension and purchase options
the company will count 20 owned ships and 79 on long-term charters with purchase options attached
Owner of Facebook agrees Book & Claim arrangement for use of sustainable bunkers
Danish tanker and bulker owner Norden has clinched an agreement with Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to use sustainable maritime fuels in its supply chain.
The operator said the owner of Facebook has signed on for the Book & Claim scheme, which works by burning biofuel on Norden’s ships and then allocating the emissions reduction to a third-party customer.
Meta is a shipper of computing equipment and construction materials.
Norden chief operating officer Anne Jensen said: “We are proud to include Meta [on] our growing list of customers looking to decarbonise their maritime supply chains.
“Both Meta and Norden share a commitment to high standards and to the further development of the decarbonisation of maritime freight, as demonstrated by our involvement in the Book & Claim community’s governing board,” she added.
Norden said its solution offers a pathway for the decarbonisation of maritime freight, in an environment with limited geographic biofuels availability.
The owner uses the Smart Freight Centre’s voluntary market-based measure framework for logistics emissions accounting and reporting.
Its biofuel has an emissions-reduction potential of between 80% and 90%.
“Our Book & Claim solution allows customers of marine transportation across the globe to take advantage of emissions reductions from biofuels, even when biofuels are not physically available to be bunkered on a specific trading route or voyage,” Jensen added.
The solution is available to Norden’s direct customers and clients in other industries that are dependent on marine transportation.
Meta head of net-zero strategy Devon Lake said: “We have a goal to reach net-zero emissions across our value chain in 2030.
“To achieve that goal, we’re working to address emissions sources across the supply chain — including the upstream emissions associated with the maritime transportation of supply chain goods,” she added.

Anthony Albanese praises then 19-year-old’s ‘exceptional bravery’ for rescuing his wounded commander under intense enemy gunfire
Private Richard Norden, a 19-year-old Australian soldier who rescued his wounded commander while seriously injured and under enemy gunfire in the Vietnam war, has been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the nation’s highest military honour.
The governor general, Sam Mostyn, praised Norden’s courage and selflessness in battle in announcing the citation on Monday, to mark Remembrance Day.
Mostyn said she shared news of King Charles’ approval of the Victoria Cross with Norden’s widow, Robynn Freeman, last week.

is the 102nd Australian to be awarded the honour
In 1968 his platoon came under heavy fire from up to 10 North Vietnamese soldiers during Operation Toan Thang.
“Private Norden, a member of the leading section, ran forward under heavy enemy fire to the Section Commander and forward scout who were wounded during the initial contact,” a statement from the governor general’s office read.

“He then half-carried, half-dragged the severely wounded Section Commander back to the section,” the statement said.
Norden, himself seriously wounded, pressed forward again and killed a North Vietnamese soldier who had been using the Australian scout “as a shield”. Norden found his comrade was dead, and cleared the area to allow his body to be recovered.
“Private Norden showed a complete disregard for his own personal safety, and his courage and selfless acts resulted in the enemy position being secured and likely saved the lives of other members of the platoon,” Mostyn said.

“The Victoria Cross for Australia is Australia’s highest military honour. The awarding of it speaks to Private Norden’s courage and selflessness in the heat of battle, his ongoing legacy and the bravery of generations of our service personnel.”
Norden served as a police officer in the Australian Capital Territory after returning from Vietnam. He died on active service in 1972.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, in a statement praised Norden as “a true Australian hero”, citing his “exceptional bravery” and “extraordinary courage and selflessness”.
In a speech at the Australian War Memorial following Remembrance Day commemorations, Albanese noted that fighting at Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral – Australia’s longest and deadliest battle of the Vietnam war – took the lives of 25 Australians and more than 100 were wounded.
“The terrible toll would have been higher but for the courage of a 19-year-old private from Gundagai by the name of Richard Norden,” Albanese said.
The defence minister, Richard Marles, also hailed Norden and said his actions deserved the highest military honour.
“Private Richard Norden’s bravery during the Battle of Fire Support Base Coral exemplifies the values we hold as Australians – those of tremendous courage and mateship,” he said.
“Under fire from the enemy, Private Norden did not hesitate as he moved forward to help his fellow wounded soldiers.”
Norden’s honour sits alongside four other Victoria Cross recipients from the Vietnam war.

our technical team has focused on a variety of porphyry-related mineralization styles in the Smart Creek / Sunrise project area and has concluded that the present erosion level offers several opportunities to test
high-grade copper and gold mineralized targets
The systems are well-preserved and have large alteration footprints
which demonstrate the potential for large deposits
combined with the abundance of reactive host rocks that can yield high grades indicates there is the potential for the discovery of ore deposits in the area that are best in-class.”
Norden Crown is focused on four robust zones of alteration and mineralization areas/domains that represent compelling exploration targets including the porphyry copper targets previously tested by Rio Tinto
Norden’s team recognized preservation of the host stratigraphy
which provides the opportunity for additional porphyry (and related) targets
including structurally controlled/replacement style gold targets at the Sunrise mine (Figure 1)
exploration opportunities are recognized on the Smart Creek project with potential for carbonate replacement style mineralization (CRD) at the Smart Creek target and at Sunrise including copper
gold and silver replacement bodies near and associated with the historic Sunrise Mine
as evidenced by widespread marbleization and skarn development associated with manganese oxides and copper oxides in the carbonate metasedimentary rocks of the Helena formation
The Smart Creek copper target remains a high-priority target with widespread
high grade copper oxides (and sulphides) which outcrop at surface
This mineralization is cut by numerous historic drill holes
with multiple copper intercepts from surface e.g.
109.73m @ 0.75% Cu; 18.74 g/t Ag(SMCR0022; see below) 1,2
The Smart Creek Project was optioned from Rio Tinto (see August 20, 2024 News Release: https://nordencrownmetals.com/_resources/news/20240820.pdf)
Smart Creek is accessible year-round via highway and gravel roads
and is located 100 km southeast of Missoula
Gold-Copper exploration potential is considered excellent at Smart Creek:
Smart Creek and Sunrise project situated 1 hour drive southeast of Missoula
in the well-endowed west-central part of Montana
The Smart Creek area is situated within a major gold-copper metallotect
Smart Creek and Sunrise project showing targets
favorable host rocks and molybdenum soil anomalies
Quartz vein stockworks at Smart Creek in outcrop (3A) and drill core (3B)
Copper oxides/carbonates in fractures cutting the Helena Formation metasedimentary rocks
Drill core (3C) and outcrop/hand specimen (3D)
The Smart Creek project hosts significant mineralization corresponding to at least 3 related styles of copper and gold deposit models
including porphyry copper-gold (PCD; Smart Creek and Radio Tower)
carbonate replacement deposits (CRD; Sunrise Mine and Smart Creek)
structurally controlled epithermal gold (Sunrise Mine)
and exotic or remobilized copper deposits formed by supergene processes (Smart Creek Exotic Copper Target; Figures 1-4)
With the exception of the copper potential at Smart Creek
mineralization at Smart Creek is the result of magmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow driven and focused by Eocene intrusions and trapped by reactive Helena Formation carbonate-rich metasedimentary rocks which ultimately produced the following opportunities
Drilling by the previous operators did not attain target depth in the western margin of the Smart Creek area which is characterized by 1) significant copper (and molybdenum) soil anomalism
2) a major induced polarization chargeability anomaly (Figures 1-4)
the Mo soil anomaly adjacent to the extensive exotic copper has not been tested (Figure 2)
Norden Crown has reason to believe that the grades may be high due to 1) the quality of the reactive carbonate host rocks (Helena Formation)
marble and quartz veins which are consistent with the distal parts of a porphyry and 3) presence of an unreactive cap rock aquitard unit (Missoula Group)
Cap rocks are known to increase grades in porphyry copper deposits by forcing fluids into more reactive adjacent units
An analogous mineralized system is the Resolution copper deposit (Arizona) where high grade carbonate and diabase host rocks are “super-charged” due to fluid flow channelized by unreactive quartzite5,6
This target at Smart Creek is untested by drilling
A second porphyry copper opportunity has been recognized in the south part of the Sunrise mine area (Figures 1-3)
Norden Crown geologists have recognized intense marble alteration outcropping in an area underlain by anomalous Cu-Mo-Mn in reconnaissance soil data
as well as a strong IP chargeability high in a historic single geophysical reconnaissance line (Figure 3)
The dimensions of the target are 1000m by 1300m defined by the alteration mapping
The strong marble alteration zone is flanked by more distal dolomite alteration and the entire area is underlain by reactive Helena Formation banded carbonates
in Eastern Nevada is an analogous magmatic-hydrothermal system and contains high-grade ore hosted by chemically reactive carbonate host rocks6,7
Sunrise Structurally-Controlled/Epithermal Gold:
Norden Crown geologists have evaluated rocks and historic mine material in the Sunrise Mine area (Figures 1-3)
Alteration is characterized by vuggy silica associated with silicified -clast breccia and strongly sulphidized host rocks
limonite are the products of weathering of the widespread sulfides
Sunrise Mine area is an opportunity to develop targets with gold potential in the shallow porphyry environment
distal to the porphyry centers identified at Smart Creek and Sunrise South
Gold deposits commonly occur in structures and stratigraphic traps within the distal and/or shallow extensions of the porphyry environment
Carbonate replacement Targets (2+ target areas):
Widespread marble and skarn alteration is mapped at both Smart Creek and Sunrise (Figures 1-3)
Leakage characteristics in these rocks includes manganese oxides and copper oxides in fracture surfaces cutting the dominant Helena Formation host rocks
This is the distal signature of the CRD clan of deposits which commonly occur in porphyry environments inside the 5km region surrounding the heat and fluid source
The Smart Creek area is underlain by widespread copper oxides/carbonates at surface outcrops/subcrops as well as defined in RC drilling (Figure 1)
This target area sits 1 km east of the Smart Creek hypogene porphyry target defined by IP chargeability and soil Mo and Cu (Figures 1 and 2)
The dimensions of the copper oxide body measure 900m by 400m (plan) and up to 75m depth
defined by historic drilling (Figures 1-3)
The direct analogy for the copper footprint at Smart Creek is the recently active Carlota mine in eastern Arizona (50 Mt @ 0.5% Cu6,8,9)
Initial work on the project will focus on further evaluation of the best anomalous zones with targeted mapping and sampling
Norden Crown plans to complete the following work prior to finalizing the positions of the initial drill holes:
Detailed alteration mapping is planned focusing on zonation and alteration intensity as vectors to mineralized centers
LiDAR will be acquired for Smart Creek and the Sunrise Mountain Area
These data will be used to constrain the locations of historic workings and complete structural/geological mapping which will allow Norden to focus on mineralized structures
Induced Polarization Ground Geophysics (“IP”)
IP Geophysics will be used in and around the Sunrise Mtn South area to further delineate the distribution of sulphides in the target area which is characterized by intense marble alteration of favorable Helena Formation carbonate host rocks
as well as a 500m+ soil geochemical footprint
Airborne EM geophysics will be conducted property-wide and will contribute to targeting massive and semi massive copper/gold bearing sulphides in carbonate replacement geological environment
Norden intends to complete property wide sampling of the limestone host rocks and evaluate the metal and stable isotope signatures in limestones to vector toward targets and identify any alteration that is not visible to the naked eye
Norden will deploy ultraviolet (UV) evaluation of calcite veins to establish whether they are related to hydrothermal fluids which will also provide vectors toward mineralization
Infill soil sampling in key target areas will be used to constrain the position of the drill targets
Portable XRF sampling will be used in exotic copper environments to vector toward the source of the fluids and sulfide bodies
The exploration work programs are planned to begin in H1 2025 with results expected prior to the Q3/Q4 drill campaign
1 Composite intervals are calculated using length weighted averages based on a combination of lithological breaks and copper
2 Data disclosed in this news release includes historical drilling results and surface rock sampling results as well as information derived from historic drill results
Neither the Qualified Person (described below) nor Norden Crown has undertaken any independent investigation of the sampling
3 There are a total of 38 surface rock samples at Smart Creek
The copper grade in these samples ranges from below detection limit to 5.64% copper with a mean value of 1.06% Cu
