Home » Germany hands over six P-3C ORION MPA to Portugal
BAAINBw press release – Translated by Naval News
Portugal is acquiring the German Navy’s fleet of six P-3C ORION turboprop aircraft awaiting retirement
including associated material and equipment
This includes the flight and tactical simulator and the so-called mid-life upgrade kits (MLU)
In the run-up to the signing of the contract
Portugal expressed its interest in the MPAs in 2022 and has inspected them several times in the meantime
Aircraft and material are now to be gradually transferred from Nordholz to Portugal
This will free up space for the Bundeswehr and pave the way for the new P-8A maritime patrol aircraft POSEIDON
which have already been ordered and are to enter service from Nordholz in 2025
Portugal intends to further expand its fleet of five P-3C ORIONs and thus ensure significantly more stable operational flight operations and strengthen its own capabilities within the NATO alliance in the coming years
“The continued use of the material by our NATO partner is a sustainable and economical solution for both sides
It is very pleasing that we will be able to continue to see the aircraft in flight operations in the future.”

The agreement between the parties was signed at the Portuguese Air Force Air Command Headquarters in Lisbon with the participation of high-level officials
and the Portuguese Air Force Chief of Staff
General João Guilherme Rosado Cartaxo Alves
Stating his thoughts about the sale after the signing ceremony
“The continued use of P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft by our NATO partner is a sustainable and economical solution for both parties
It is very pleasing that we will continue to see the aircraft in flight operations in the future.”
The agreement, which is worth around 45 million Euros, comprises a flight and tactical simulator, mid-life upgrade kits in addition to P-3C Orion aircraft, according to a statement issued by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment
These six maritime patrol aircraft along with related equipment
which are currently in service with Naval Aviation Squadron 3 “Graf Zeppelin” at Nordholz Air Base on Germany’s North Sea coast
will be delivered to Portugal at regular intervals until 2025
the Bundeswehr will have room for five new P-8A POSEIDON maritime patrol aircraft
which it ordered from American company Boeing in 2021 and plans to station in Nordholz starting in 2025
