Global military spending rose for the tenth year in a row in 2024 All countries together spent around 2.72 trillion US dollars (around 2.38 trillion euros) on the military according to a new report by the Stockholm-based peace research institute Sipri this was 9.4 percent more than in 2023 - the largest increase from one year to the next since the end of the Cold War the increase was particularly strong in Europe and the Middle East which can be explained by the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip as well as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon Germany ranks fourth in the world for military expenditure Germany spent 88.5 billion US dollars (77.6 billion euros) on the military in 2024 - 28% more than in the previous year - putting it ahead of all other countries in Central and Western Europe for the first time since reunification and China and Russia in second and third place The Sipri report shows that all European countries - with the exception of Malta - increased their military spending in 2024 At 149 billion dollars (just under 131 billion euros) Russia was by far the European country that spent the most on its military spent 64.7 billion dollars (around 56.7 billion euros) on it Ukraine was the country in the world that spent the largest proportion of its gross domestic product on its military apparatus USA accounted for more than a third of military spending for years the undisputed number one in military spending accounted for 37 percent of global military spending with 997 billion dollars (874 billion euros) increased its spending by seven percent to 314 billion dollars (about 275 billion euros) marking three decades of uninterrupted growth in military spending military spending in the Middle East rose overall but only Israel and Lebanon recorded a significant increase Israel's spending rose by 65 percent to 46.5 billion dollars (a good 40 billion euros) the highest increase since the Six-Day War in 1967 The annual Sipri report on military spending around the world is considered the most comprehensive collection of data of its kind The peace researchers also include expenditure on personnel military aid and military research and development together with the municipality of Nörvenich as the initiator and Westenergie AG as the energy and infrastructure provider is launching a pilot project to trial curb chargers on the municipality’s public roads The aim of the project is to integrate and pilot the curb chargers developed by Rheinmetall at two different locations The municipality is located within the catchment of the Cologne metropolitan area and is rural in nature with around 12,000 inhabitants After Rheinmetall and the project partners recently signed a pilot contract representatives of all project partners came together in Nörvenich for the official launch on April 29 The pilot project follows on seamlessly from the recent rollout of the first curb chargers in the metropolitan area of the city of Cologne While cities are known for their high population density and the associated challenges comparable problems arise in small communities especially in areas dominated by apartment buildings Other factors that have to be taken into account during planning and implementation include the width of sidewalks These factors often make locations unfeasible or unattractive in terms of cost Ambitious climate protection targets and the central role assigned to smaller municipalities by the German government in the expansion of public charging infrastructure pose challenges Simple and widely available charging infrastructure addresses these challenges and makes the municipality a more attractive option for residents in the long term The integration of the electronic module into a curb utilizes existing infrastructure and facilitates the installation of charging infrastructure even in places where it would not normally be possible to install a charging station Division Manager Power Systems: “We are delighted that the municipality of Nörvenich has seen the value of our solution and has set things in motion to be one of the first to pilot the systems in public areas which seamlessly blend into the streetscape help to solve a major problem as we move towards more electromobility on a wider scale Charging infrastructure needs to be available to everyone across the board explains why the innovative charging concept is a logical approach for a range of different locations and one that is underpinned by the commitment of a modern and open-minded municipality to proactively help shape the mobility transition: “It is often difficult for people in apartments or houses without parking spaces on their own property to make the transition to electromobility nor are they allowed to lay a cable across the sidewalk to charge their vehicle This is precisely why the Rheinmetall curb charger is the perfect solution – it provides a charging point located directly next to parking spaces in public areas without having to install a standard charging station on the sidewalk which further restricts the space available to pedestrians.” Timo Czech was quick to express his interest in the charging solution and offered up his municipality for a pilot scheme which already operates more than 1,700 charging points They were Rheinmetall’s perfect match: a company with experience in charging infrastructure and a municipality that would allow them to test charging in public spaces The municipality and Westenergie worked together to find suitable areas within the municipality that were both highly frequented and had the necessary network infrastructure Two locations were selected: Heribertstrasse in Eschweiler über Feld and Ubierstrasse in Nörvenich The Düren-based civil engineering company Lück und Wahlen carried out the essential connection and civil engineering work for the project within a very short time frame commented: “The expansion of electromobility requires new innovative solutions that take into account specific local conditions and the needs of citizens Curb chargers are an excellent addition to conventional charging points We managed to complete the project within a very short space of time – thanks to the municipality of Nörvenich rural areas will face just as many challenges as growing metropolises: climate change and climate protection Public charging infrastructure has a key role to play in the mobility transition: nationwide charging facilities are an essential prerequisite for the switch to electromobility The German government can only achieve its ambitious target of 15 million electric cars by 2030 with a proportionate expansion of this infrastructure This will require around 1 million public charging points in Germany to enable people without their own parking and charging facilities to switch to low-emission electric vehicles and cost-effective installation of freely accessible public charging points is crucial for this the solution developed by Rheinmetall relies on the intelligent use of existing urban infrastructure and offers electric vehicle drivers charging facilities capable of delivering up to 22 kW This makes the curb charger the perfect addition to conventional charging stations in public spaces This robust solution can be installed almost anywhere and is therefore scalable which is crucial for infrastructure providers such as Westenergie: this means that reliable charging infrastructure can be offered across a wide area and can also be rolled out in locations where it is not possible to install a charging station Safety is Rheinmetall’s top priority: the systems have undergone extensive testing before being deployed in public spaces as part of another pilot project Rheinmetall is making an important contribution to the mobility transition with the solution it has developed and is taking responsibility for creating a future that works for us.  More the 44th International Sanicole Airshow Returning after a year off due to Kleine Brogel hosting Belgian Air Force Days in 2023 Sanicole marked the 80th Anniversary of Belgian Liberation the 50th Anniversary of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and the 60th Anniversary of the Patrouille Suisse It was also a show of ‘hellos’ and ‘goodbyes’ with the international air display debut of the German Air Force’s second Eurofighter Typhoon display from TaktLwG 31 at Nörvenich and the last ever airshow flight by Steven ‘Vrieske’ De Vries the final Belgian Air Force F-16 solo display pilot and former leader of 31 Squadron’s Thundertigers team The International Sanicole Airshow weekend is always one I relish offering at least two very different days of high-quality aviation action alongside the other attractions of Belgium the team at Sanicole Aeroclub have constantly developed the airshow experience to attract the widest possible audience It has been reported the 2024 event attracted 55,000 visitors with the main show day selling out well in advance of the show That was certainly reflected in the crowd density on the Sunday with nearly all the free space taken Business and Friends of Sanicole packages also proved highly popular selling out almost as soon as tickets went on sale It really is not often we mention pre-show social media publicity in a review but on this occasion Some of the Facebook and Instagram reels plus the Tiktok videos were just plain weird to the point of being inappropriate Such videos do need to be eye-catching to a huge variety of viewers but they do need to be sympathetic to the event they are advertising and not just be weird for the sake of being weird Sanicole’s more traditional publicity however was very impressive with sticker posters and even McDonald’s placemats advertising the event across the region Following the last event in 2022 when there were some serious issues with the parking plan and the shuttle buses plenty of work had been done to improve the experience for visitors The good news for most visitors was that most the car parking returned to walking distance from the airfield with just one car park being remote enough to require a shuttle bus The airshow also offered dedicated coach pick-up from various towns and cities around Belgium as well as a cycle-route scheme to reduce traffic flow to and from the show it seems to have been a success though there were some cases of visitors getting lost trying to find car parks (it has to be said signage could be difficult to spot and not everyone has access to the Waze App) and there was some congestion for some getting out on the Sunday having stayed on for an hour after the end of the flying I simply drove out of the car parks and was back at my hotel some 10 miles away within half an hour Another big improvement was the airshow catering with a new contractor for this year The main catering units were very different essentially being open kitchens within temporary structures The food I had was just about the best food I’ve had at any event this year (certainly quality you would associate with decent restaurants) with an excellent choice beyond the usual burgers It was really quite popular too with long queues during much of the day To their credit though the caterers stayed open for quite some time after the flying giving many the chance of grabbing an evening meal while allowing the traffic to clear Sometimes warm sunny weather can mean some foggy mornings which delay the start of the flying it did cloud over (which is a slight relief for photographers who dread shooting into bright sunlight) but the cloudbase remained very high allowing every acts to fly a full display Opening the displays were the Flying Dragons Paramotor Team. Like their sunset presentation theirs was a colourful display that filled the sky Particularly pleasing was their use of coloured smoke to draw the Belgian flag in the sky Similar patriotic use of smoke came from the home favourites the Victors Formation Team flying four Piper PA28 Cherokees from Ursel Flying Club 2024 is a special year for the team as they celebrate their 20th anniversary Ursel and the Belgian Air Force Days events but have also performed on an international stage all of their display aircraft have received special tail-art The Victors spearheaded a collection of civilian displays that included Rich Goodwin in his jet-powered Pitts S-2SE Special Bob Grimstead flying his Fournier RF4D and a solo Grob 109b from Aerosparx the standout civilian display of the after came from French aerobatic champion Aude Lemordant flying her MXS Aude a three times World Aerobatic Champion and that shone through during her routine with an incredible display of precision and aerobatic flair The 80th Anniversary of Belgian Liberation was marked by a superb collection of heritage aircraft The centrepiece to the aerial commemorations was the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Avro Lancaster B1 which featured on most of the event’s publicity material and performed rare overseas solo display Joining the Lancaster was Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Sally-B making a welcome return to Belgium in the hands of Sanicole Aeroclub member Peter Kuypers The B-17G also featured in the first special formation of the afternoon flying in tandem with the Royal Danish Air Force F-16AM Fighting Falcon not only demonstrating 80 years of military aviation development but also marking Sally-B operator Ellie Sallingboe’s Danish heritage Joining the big bombers were several other significant historic aircraft Stijn De Jaeghere returned with his beautiful North American AT-6D Texan early on during Sunday’s display He also appeared later on in the programme giving his first Sanicole display in his recently acquired Boeing-Stearman N2S-3 Kaydet which wears the colours of the US Navy Three more Belgian operated T-6 Texans also appeared together giving some loose formation passes before a small recreation of an airfield attack If there was a prize for the more elegant aircraft in the display then that surely must go the stunning Lockheed 12A Electra Junior from Luc Hellings based at Zwartberg Completing the historic flying were three more potent warbirds from the Benelux region The Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight made a very welcome return with its beautiful Supermarine Spitfire LFIXb flown by Ralph Aarts the crowds were treated to a display by Kris van der Burgh’s Spitfire XVIe which wears the wartime colours of 349 Squadron a current Belgian Air Force unit flying the F-16 my star warbird of the afternoon was the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk flown by Fréderic Vormezeele This aircraft has only recently been imported to Belgium and was refurbished by Fast Aero Services It had been modified into a two-seat configuration like many other P-40s for experience flights and wears the early war markings of a United States Army Air Force aircraft It was however modern military displays that dominated the flying display With organisers now closing the runway at Sanicole Aeroclub to allow more space in the showground the only aircraft that can operate here during the show are rotary aircraft The Royal Netherlands Air Force made a sizeable contribution to the static displays with one of 301 Squadron’s brand-new Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardians on show alongside the NH Industries NH90NFH from 860 Squadron They also sent one of their Pilatus PC-7 Turbotrainers to Sanicole for static display alongside two examples from the Austrian Air Force Though unable to contribute to the air display the Belgian Air Force’s 17 Squadron had two examples of the Agusta A109BAi on static display though one did look rather worse for wear the Belgian Air Force did present a 40 Squadron NH90NFH Caiman in a search and rescue role demonstration while an Airbus A400M Atlas from 20 Squadron at Melsbroek gave a series of low flypasts in different configurations No modern iteration of Sanicole would be complete without a display from the Red Devils and their four SIAI-Marchetti SF260s The team of qualified flying instructors are drawn from 5 squadron based at Beauvechain and it has been thought with the impending retirement of the type that 2024 would be their final season there were rumours throughout the Sanicole weekend the team could at least make some appearances into 2025 – watch this space the Red Devils were unable to form up with the Stampe and Vertongen Museum’s Fouga CM170 Magister  The classic jet trainer carries the markings of the Red Devils display team and it did eventually perform a solo routine once its technical issues were resolved The Belgian Army’s Black Devils Parachute Display Team opened the second half of the flying display dropping into Sanicole Aeroclub with three flag bearers They were followed by the Canadian Armed Forces Skyhawks Parachute Display Team making their third appearance at the show having performed here in 2010 and 2012 Ontario and they are a sub-unit of the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre They consist of members of three Canadian armed forces and performed a very original display of formation and solo parachuting They were a particularly apt addition to the flying display given the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden which was being commemorated just a few kilometres north of Leopoldsburg the same weekend the Belgian Air Force sends students to Dax in France to training with the French Army training school there At Dax they fly the Airbus H120 Calliope operated by HeliDax and an example was beautifully presented two French Army pilots who demonstrated the type’s speed and agility without leaving the confines of the airfield The other standout rotary display came from the Swedish Air Force’s Sikorsky Hkp-16 (UH-60M) Blackhawk the Blackhawk would be flown fast and low and that was certainly demonstrated by the crew with steep turns tight pirouettes as well as rapid sideways and backwards flying The Swedes also contributed to the static displays with a further Blackhawk and a rare visit by a Agusta Hkp-15 (A109) The Irish Air Corps made their Sanicole debut with the Silver Swallows Display Team flying three Pilatus PC-9Ms This is a rarely seen display team which only makes occasional forays in Europe The last time they made an international appearance was in 2022 for the Corps Centenary One of their aircraft still wore special markings celebrating that anniversary Another air arm participating for the first time was the Slovenian Air Force which presented its excellent Pilatus PC-9M Hudournik solo aerobatics display Sanicole also welcome a plethora of solo jet displays The Finnish Air Force made a welcome return with its dramatic McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet display the Finnish aircraft have benefitted from the latest flight control software developed for the US Navy’s Super Hornet fleet making them amongst the most advanced ‘legacy’ aircraft in service today with no angle-of-attack limitations Another display that caught the eye was the fabulous Dassault Rafale C display from the French Air and Space Force This is probably the best solo jet display in Europe right now with its pilot Captain Jean-Brice “Mimouss” Millet yet very accurate aerobatics in the French ‘omni-role’ fighter aircraft Eurofighter aircraft made a significant contribution to the flying displays The Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 finally got to participate in a public Sanicole flying display after being weathered out in 2017 The RAF Typhoon was a last-minute addition as well only becoming available to Sanicole following the cancellation of NATO Days in the Czech Republic following the terrible floods there We wish the NATO Days organisers and Czech people all the best in their recovery efforts The last few display seasons have seen the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) make a very welcome return to display flying at events in their homeland and on the international stage Sanicole saw one of its latest contributions the Eurofighter EF2000 display from Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 31 “Boelcke“ The Luftwaffe already has a well-established EF2000 display from Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 74 based at Neuburg an der Donau TaktLwG 31 “B” is based at Nörvenich Air Base on the western side of Germany near Cologne Displaying the EF2000 was ‘BamBam’ and he put on a very potent and noisy demonstration in the EF2000 which it the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s capabilities The 50th Anniversary of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon attracted some great displays The Royal Danish Air Force represented the earliest variant of aircraft with Captain Troels “TEO” Vang displaying F-16AM E-190 one of the air arm’s original Block 10 aircraft The Turkish Air Force also returned to Belgium with their SoloTurk Demo Team displaying their F-16C Fighting Falcon with a typically punchy routine But perhaps the biggest coup for Sanicole was attracting the United States Air Force’s ‘Viper Demo Team’ flying Lockheed Martin F-16C Fighting Falcon to their show as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations Getting a USAF team to Europe is no mean feat but Sanicole (and Belgian Air Force Days) have had a good streak in recent years with the Viper Demo Team’s appearance preceded by two appearances of the F-35 Demo Team in 2022 and 2023 The USAF teams have some quite different requirements to those of their European counterparts so it does take quite a lot of effort by Sanicole and the Belgian Air Force to meet their expectations The Viper Demo Team’s display in also quite different to the European display with Captain Taylor “FEMA” Hiester showcasing the speed and power of the aircraft together with some tactical manoeuvres Though the Belgian Air Force no longer operates its F-16 solo display its F-16 operations were represented in the flying display by 31 ‘Tiger’ Squadron based at Kleine Brogel with their Thundertigers display They flew three F-16s though a short routine of close and tactical formation passes making full use of the reheat to create the ‘Thunder.’ The loss of the Belgian F-16 solo display did come quite suddenly earlier this year even as Senior Captain Steven ‘Vrieske’ De Vries was preparing for his final season Sanicole however still wanted to provide him with a suitable send off – ‘The Last Dance.’ The first part of this saw ‘Vrieske’ lead the “Falcon 50” formation in a Belgian F-16AM Fighting Falcon He was flanked by a Royal Danish Air Force F-16AM a Turkish Air Force F-16C plus a F-16AM and F-16BM from the Portuguese Air Force The five aircraft made a couple of passes showing the underside and topside of the aircraft Vrieske’s final moment in the spotlight linked the F-16 and Liberation themes with a ‘Heritage Flight’ alongside the Supermarine Spitfire XVIe flown by Kris Van der Bergh With the Belgian Air Force only just having accepted the first two F-35s the flight still showed the current day frontline against the air arm’s first fighter aircraft After their flypasts in front of the crowd the two aircraft lined up on the B-axis for a typically flamboyant break with Vrieske performing a typical high-alpha wing-over with his smokewinders streaming white smoke trails against the early evening sky The flying display was closed by Patrouille Suisse The team are celebrating their 60th Anniversary in 2024 and very much wanted to be at Sanicole for their final international display of the season it had been expected to be the team’s final display season too with the Swiss Air Force looking to retire the Northrop F-5E Tiger II the type will be kept in service a little while longer It was however the final international display for some members of the team including the team leader Major Michael ‘Pűpi’ Duft who has led the team since 2020 Also in his final season with the team was solo pilot Major Martin ‘Jaydee’ Schär the team made liberal use of flares adding to the celebratory feel of their 2024 routine and bring the 44th International Sanicole Airshow to a spectacular conclusion and the 44th edition was no exception with some quite brilliant aircraft taking part and some very memorable formations it is clear to see that the organisers at Sanicole Aeroclub really want to make the event the best possible experience for all those who attend There are of course always improvements to be made but the intent is always there and we cannot wait to see what they have in store for The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINWBw) has ordered seven H145 helicopters to replace the German Armed Forces’ (Bundeswehr) obsolete Bell UH-1D search-and-rescue fleet The aircraft will be delivered in 2020 and will be stationed at the sites in Niederstetten Airbus Helicopters will also be responsible for logistics support “We’re proud to have received another order for our H145 family from the Bundeswehr This will further standardise the Bundeswehr’s fleet of light helicopters,” said Wolfgang Schoder Airbus Helicopters’ executive vice president of light helicopters and governmental programs “The helicopters already operated by the Bundeswehr have proven themselves in particular through their very high levels of operational availability and we see a lot more possibilities for the flexible and reliable H145 family to perform a wide range of tasks in all branches of the armed forces.” According to an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Transport the Bundeswehr is also responsible for search-and-rescue operations in the event of aircraft accidents on German territory It therefore maintains a fleet of search-and-rescue helicopters on permanent standby; and these helicopters are also available for use in national disaster management operations The Bell UH-1D model currently in use by the Bundeswehr were each other’s professors,” says keyboardist and composer Irmin Schmidt recalling the special alchemy between the musicians he assembled as an experiment to fuse together various strands of 20th-century music a 14th-century castle southeast of Cologne was an unlikely setting for such a revolution Yet Schmidt and the four companions who gathered there in a makeshift studio in 1968 were determined to throw off the old order and create a new culture – one that rejected not only German tradition but would be entirely distinct from mainstream rock in Britain and America their music bristling with a spirit of anarchy three already in their thirties and from diverse musical backgrounds Their individual range of influences was vast: modern classical even funk and world music mixed with European avant-garde They recorded for just 10 years but became one of rock’s most innovative and influential acts their footprint audible on albums by bands such as Radiohead and The Fall Yet Schmidt admits they were far from sure what would emerge from this musical melting pot and the only surviving member of the original four-piece he says: “The band I founded together with the other three was not a rock band my idea was to bring together these different backgrounds and styles and experiences which formed 20th-century music: jazz and rock and electronics and new music and bring it together and see what happens and nobody had an idea what should come out of it We just spontaneously started saying: let’s see what will happen.” Schmidt was already an established musician and conductor by 1968 he had been a student of avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen at Cologne’s Rheinische Musikschule Can’s groundbreaking approach to music chimed with Stockhausen’s own post-war philosophy: “The cities have been erased and one can start from scratch without considering ruins and tasteless remains” Schmidt tells me another key ingredient helped shape Can’s freeform sound: “[Our] musical experience was very important Because Can anyway was a collage of different styles [of] new musics and my experience was as a student of Stockhausen and the practice of performing [the works of John] Cage and all this stuff Brahms and Stravinsky is something I brought into Can But [it was] the same thing with jazz with Jaki Schmidt was deeply affected by growing up in a country devastated by bombing the definitive history he co-authored with Rob Young he spoke of the catastrophe of war being the black heart of the music he made in Can “a refusal of the blank optimism of the immediate post-war period” His teenage years saw him “obsessively furious” over his homeland’s recent history railing at his teachers’ Nazi past and his own family’s support for the regime Schmidt’s musical horizons broadened during a 1966 trip to New York Ostensibly there for a conducting competition he discovered instead the city’s flourishing art scene and hung out with pioneers of minimalism Fascinated by the possibilities created by tape loops Czukay experienced a similar musical epiphany speakers and spatial depth grew while working at a repair shop where he became familiar with the rudiments of electrical engineering something which later proved invaluable when he set up Can’s recording studio and acted as the band’s tape editor and recording engineer By the mid-1960s Czukay was teaching in Switzerland where one of his students opened his eyes to what rock music could be Pupil became teacher as Karoli introduced Czukay to The Beatles’ I Am The Walrus with its use of AM radio samples excited by what he had discovered in New York his old friend arrived in Cologne with Karoli in tow Born in 1948 in Bavaria before moving to Switzerland Karoli had played in numerous jazz and dance bands and became Can’s youngest member and guitarist Completing the original line-up was Jaki Liebezeit his family refugees after the Soviet occupation of East Germany Liebezeit though was looking to take a different approach:  Offered rent-free by an art collector friend affording them the opportunity to experiment and jam for days at a time Czukay working his magic piecing together tracks from hundreds of hours of recording Schmidt is talking to promote the archive release Can Live in Keele 1977 It is part of an excellent series of live releases mostly from the band’s final years when they had adopted multitrack recording techniques facilities were much more rudimentary with just two basic Revox two-track tape machines The huge entrance hall and upper hallway provided excellent reverb though because recording meant that what you heard by playing was already the mix but improvising was always the search for a certain form for a certain groove on which you could base a piece and there was found a groove which worked for all of us together Then we cut out the pieces and glued them together.” Unlike many of their German contemporaries Can played without synthesisers until their final records applying a ring modulator to Schmidth’s piano and organ which created unusual sounds rather than the endless possibilities offered by synths Their work was more interesting and creative because of these limitations American poet and artist Malcolm Mooney was the final piece in the jigsaw Czukay is quoted in All Gates Open recalling the recording of Father Cannot Yell the opening track on Can’s cult debut album Monster Movie: “Can wasn’t sure yet which way musically to go till Malcolm jumped one day to the microphone and pushed us into A RHYTHM.” All Gates Open charts Mooney’s subsequent mental health struggles and subsequent return to the United States a young Japanese traveller who Czukay and Liebezeit discovered busking outside a café in Munich and whose unique improvised vocal style combined words drawn from Japanese Schmidt expands on their use of vocals: “We did quite a lot without a vocalist who did most of the successful records with us… the vocalist was much more an instrumentalist Compositions for often obscure movies played an important role during Can’s early years some collected on 1970’s eclectic Soundtracks There was an economic necessity to this work says Schmidt: “Some of the pieces actually existed before You need money and that was the only way to earn some money most of the film musics Can did were in the first half of our existence because then we made tours and the records got more successful Their breakthrough came with 1971’s extraordinary double album Tago Mago which earned a sizeable cult following and critical acclaim in Britain and France bluesy rock with a jazz aesthetic and a smattering of funk The album then takes a dramatically different turn The musique concrète soundscape of Aumgn is Tago Mago’s avant garde centrepiece it incorporates sonic experimentation mixed with random snapshots of life at Schloss Nörvenich “We were aware we were making something special,” says Schmidt but we did not compromise with any kind of business idea Can set up their own studio in an old cinema in Weilerswist south of Cologne 1,500 ex-military mattresses nailed to the walls as soundproofing an unexpected top 10 single when used as the theme to the hit German television drama Das Messer It led to a Goldene Europa TV award in recognition of Can’s soundtrack work while follow-up single Vitamin C appeared on the soundtrack of a 1973 film and continue to pop up in movies like Inherent Vice (2014) and The Gentlemen (2019) plus TV shows Euphoria (2019) and Eric (2024) Can played a landmark free concert at Kölner Sporthalle in Cologne in February 1972 Fronted by an animated Suzuki in a luminescent red flared jumpsuit but with no money for an expensive stage set showing off their humour by recruiting comedic juggler Fred Ray and a troupe of acrobats to provide circus style entertainment We didn’t have the means to make some spectacular show so we did something… with very simple but funny means Improvisation was a key part of Can’s performances and the recent collection of live albums recorded from 1973 to 1977 offers a very different perspective the live work is its own separate canon which showed Can going to even more extremes the remarkable musical telepathy between its members evident “We wanted to invent spontaneously on stage,” says Schmidt In the first three years it was a process of learning to invent on stage “I don’t talk much about improvisation because most of the time It was not improvising about a given scheme It was just really inventing something new especially in Keele at the very end of our time we more often played even recognisably existing pieces and then started getting out of it and using the groove and doing something new on it.” found the band enjoying life in their new environment at Weilerswist while 1973’s Future Days was one of the earliest examples of ambient music and the final album recorded with Suzuki who got married and joined the Jehovah’s Witness faith Czukay described his departure as “a powerful fist strike into one’s stomach” Soon Over Babaluma (1974) leaned into ambient sounds again Rolling Stone calling Chain Reaction the precursor to 1990s techno In 1975 Can obtained their first 16-track recorder with Landed their first album to be professionally mixed as part of a deal with Virgin Melody Maker dubbing them “the most advanced rock unit on the planet” They gave a memorable performance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test showing off his trademark karate chop style of playing Czukay later described the arrival of multitrack as the beginning of the end; the band no longer recording together as a unit I Want More earning them an unlikely UK chart hit and an appearance on Top Of The Pops By the time they appeared at Keele to promote 1977’s Saw Delight Czukay had retired from bass duties and was instead experimenting with a shortwave radio receiver while ex-Traffic rhythm duo Rosko Gee and Reebop Kwaku Baah bolstered the rhythm section Although Saw Delight had been poorly received the long-awaited recording of Live At Keele 1977 is the most requested performance since the live series began It reveals a dynamic show which Jennifer Lucy Allan’s accompanying sleeve notes declare: “On paper Their legacy now assured with post-punk bands citing Can as a major influence two final studio albums followed in 1978 and 1979 before one final reunion album ten years later with Mooney returning on vocals Schmidt relocated to Provence where he established a studio and among projects composed scores for 80 films some collected together on Anthology: Soundtracks which he views as important as any of his other works But both in terms of their remarkable recorded legacy and their continuing influence Can do what they did in Schloss Nörvenich – they go on and on everybody continued his music studies in Can with everybody else being his professor.” Can Live in Keele 1977 and other newly restored live albums are Underneath, a student learns to play the sitar until a "European Son"-like attack of the John Cales overcomes his reverence for the instrument, and he throttles it. Of course, Tarwater, like the camera-wielding kid next door in "American Beauty," are fascinated by this strangulation and give it prominence. "The Trees" is a far less energetic track than "Ants," but Lippok nonetheless snaps at his Dada chorus ("Don't ever antagonize the home"). His strangely unnerving vocals are propelled by a nagging cello and percussive mouth harp as he reveals, "I like to yell when it's snowing." I'm sure his neighbors appreciate that. But the band saves their oddest and most surreptitious moments for last. On "Seven Ways to Fake a Perfect Skin," Tarwater act out their fantasies of becoming one of Brian Eno's oblique strategies (or, at the very least, an out-take off Here Come the Warm Jets). Giddy analog synth loops and plucked harpsichord haunt the background. But Tarwater's frivolity is offset by Lippok's sinister whibble and fake London accent. On Animals, Suns and Atoms, Tarwater have finally realized that though analog mood sauce can be spread over phat hip-hop beats, it doesn't mean it necessarily should be. After all, they have to do better than the Notwist's "Day 7" and "Chemicals" at some point. Those two superb Notwist tracks defined the direction in which squirm should be headed. I want to hear outsider vocals accompanied by skewed, electronic cracks, blips, and a hearty gutbucket of hip-hop funk. I'm thrilled that Lippok and Jestram have picked up on the Notwist tactic. Tarwater have easily equaled Shrink in terms of effectiveness and creativity. They've captured the funk of Ege Bam Yasi-era Can, run it through with a provocative dub disquiet, and ended up with an album that marks new heights in electronic music. Here is an album I'll return to frequently. It's your squirm now!
