Global wood processing firm Koehler Group is celebrating the multi-year conversion of its combined heat and power (CHP) plant from coal-fired to biomass-fired generation dedicated to a paper production site in Oberkirch
The 70 million Euro (US$76M) construction and conversion project has taken two years to complete
Koehler operates three paper machines at the Oberkirch plant
so has operated its own dedicated power generation system since 1943
In 1986, a new power plant burning coal and paper sludge was built and operated there for nearly 40 years. The new CHP biomass facility is fueled by wood chips
"The conversion of the plant is a clear sign of our commitment to protecting the climate and our support for Germany's energy transition,” Kai Furler
“We are proud of the fact that we will reduce our fossil CO2 emissions by 150,000 metric tons per year
while simultaneously ensuring sustainable production through the supply of green energy
This lays the foundation for our continued success in the market in the medium to long term.”
In converting the power supply from coal to biomass
Koehler Group also modernized the overall plant technology
The company deployed more than 300 people as part of the construction and modernization phases
Koehler’s Oberkirch CHP plant operated on a trial basis until it gained official regulatory and certification approval from the Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV)
A significant share of the construction work and the installation of the fuel supply equipment
as well as the infrastructure measures required
had to be implemented while the power plant was operating in order to keep the plant’s standstill phase as short as possible
project manager Josef Hofer said in the company release about the project
Crews installed several biomass receiving areas and four new silos to replace the coal storage and handling portion
The last of the coal burning happened in June 2024
Koehler’s Oberkirch plant and its machines produce fine paper and edge banding board
the company has five production mills in Germany

The 2025 Swiss Long Course Championships began today from Oberkirch with Olympic medalist Noe Ponti diving in for the men’s 50m butterfly
23-year-old Ponti already owned the top time in the world in the event
a mark of 22.83 he produced at February’s Dubai Open Swimming Championships
Ponti lowered that result by .06 to check in with a top-seeded performance of 22.77
a time within .12 of the 22.65 Swiss national record he notched at last April’s Swiss Championships
That rendered him the 6th-fastest man in history
Ponti added slightly to ultimately get to the wall in 22.81
beating the field by well over a second in the process
He and Dutchman Nyls Korstanje remain the only racers in the world right now who have delved under the 23-second barrier this season
Korstanje will be racing at the Bergen Swim Festival this weekend so we’ll see how the former NC State standout responds

Last month 20 young people from Haverfordwest Youth Club travelled to Oberkirch in Germany
which has been twinned with Haverfordwest since 1989
The European adventure was fully funded through the Taith programme for international learning exchange for Wales
The five day visit to Oberkirch provided young people
with the opportunity to experience a new culture
establish new friendships and contributed to their personal
For some of the young people it was the first time they had experienced European travel and culture
The group participated in a busy programme of activities
an outdoor pool and were fortunate to be invited to a reception at the Rathaus (Town Hall) where they were extended a warm welcome by the Mayor
Bürgermeister Christoph Lipps and Nicole Trayer
the group visited Schauenburg Castle ruins
where they enjoyed a spectacular view high above the town of Oberkirch
Feedback from the young people indicated that what they particularly liked about Oberkirch was the cleanliness
the friendliness of the people and the beautiful views and landscape
said: “The experience of participating in this international learning exchange programme has enriched the cultural
travel and learning experiences of the young people
They were excellent ambassadors for Haverfordwest Youth Club
and our friends in Oberkirch commented on their good manners and how well they represented their home town”
Members of Haverfordwest Youth Club are looking forward to welcoming the young people of Oberkirch on a return visit to Haverfordwest in 2025

Now that's one way to encourage people to get outdoors
This is the result of the recent Municipal Vote which has given the go-ahead for the Migros and Golfpark Oberkirch to extend an existing short course from 6 to 9 holes
The Municipality of Oberkirch voted in favour of re-zoning an adjacent 6.3-hectare parcel of land from agriculture to sport & leisure
In so doing the Municipality gave the green light for constructing 3 new holes at this popular Migros course established in 2007
“This re-zoning success is rare but encouraging for the future of golf in Switzerland”
the Migros (one of the original supermarket chains in Switzerland) has built 8 different public golf facilities across the country
offering a variety of golfing experiences ranging from P&P to full 18-hole courses
just one more step towards creating a “Gateway to Golf” for everyone to learn and play the game under their motto “Golf for everyone”
It is perhaps this focus on public golf and concern for the environment which has won over public opinion and permitted this extension
Because it should be said that within these “Golfparks”
the Migros maintains over 180 hectares of ecologically valuable landscape
They also look after a number of neighbouring parks with the goal of promoting multi-functional golf and recreational areas
Most of these facilities are also getting “OnCourse” for obtaining the GEO Eco-label in order to improve management and act as leaders of sustainability in their communities
Public golf and environmental responsibility
A great recipe for growing the game in Switzerland

The 2025 Swiss Long Course Championships wrapped up tonight from Oberkirch but not before Olympic medalist Noe Ponti snagged another victory
23-year-old Ponti stopped the clock at a time of 22.61
with Noah Reuben Retzler next to the wall in 22.92 followed by Robin Yeboah who touched in 22.94
the fly ace’s time represented a lifetime best
overwriting the 22.63 he put on the books this past February in Dubai
Roman Mityukov was another multiple event winner
closing his championships campaign with a decisive victory in the men’s 100m back
Olympic medalist Mityukov produced a solid time of 53.96
comprised of splits of 26.14/27.82 to get the job done
The 24-year-old now checks in as the 9th-swiftest performer in the world this season
There could legitimately be a possibility of an all sub 50 podium soon in that 100 fly

"We knew that if you were quiet during the beating and didn't make a sound
you will be beaten until you calmed down."
At the "Christian School of Linth" (CSL), children are supposed to learn "to reverence the triune God". The school was established by Jürg Läderach in 1995, together with a boarding house and a free church, SRF writes
The Swiss broadcaster made a documentary about the evangelical community
which belongs to the Evangelical Community of Hof Oberkirch were "raised in a strictly religious manner"
The public even speculated that they were physically punished sometimes
as parents defended the school and argued that their children loved it
the authorities could not start an investigation
testimonies of former pupils began to leak
That was when SRF started the production of the documentary on the school
the school commissioned a report in which 58 students testified about their experiences at the school
They speak about beatings and beating rituals in which they had to strip naked
pull down your pants and then there was a beating
I always tried to cheat myself out of my body so that I wouldn't feel anything anymore
Because it did not stop after two or three hits
The beatings were mainly carried out by the school's principal and his wife
founder Jürg Läderach also participated in beatings with his belt
Helga Koller admits that she used physical violence to punish children, Tagblatt writes
And corporal punishment was also preached.”
He released a statement that "he never hit or otherwise mistreated any students." At the same time
"We should have taken decisive action years ago."
says he has experienced "the climate of fear" during his own time at school
He called the film "very stressful"
"Seeing people talk about such mental and physical abuse is incredibly painful
especially in an environment that you were part of." He says to condemn the violence at the school in all forms
"This goes against everything I believe in and what is important to me."
According to Luzener Zeitung
it is very likely that the Läderachs find themselves in a difficult dilemma
Johannes must express himself clearly and distance himself from his father's actions because otherwise
it appears as if he endorses or trivialises the alleged abuse
he should be careful as he is also the CEO of the Läderach chocolate company
which will be affected if the abuse scandal becomes more widely known
SRF writes that most of the alleged abuse is time-barred and cannot be legally investigated
Jürg Läderach is thus presumed innocent unless the opposite is proven
the former owner of the school threatens to press charges against anyone who claims he was hit at the school

The Santa Rosa native passed away suddenly
while driving home from the soccer field on May 21 in Phoenix
There are two planned celebrations for David Shaffer
the Johnny Appleseed of soccer in Sonoma County
paid a call to Madrone Elementary School in Rincon Valley
“He rolled a soccer ball out in the middle of the field
and nobody knew what it was,” recalled Don Shaffer
“If you want to play soccer,” Belluzzo told the students
“So that’s what we did,” said Shaffer on Wednesday
speaking for himself and his brothers Dave and Dwayne
Don was still getting used to the idea that one of his brothers was gone
driving home from the pitch at Real Salt Lake-AZ
where he was a program director and coached the boys U19 and U16 teams
where he’d met and fallen in love with his wife
A talented striker with a dangerous left foot
Shaffer led Montgomery High School to three straight North Bay League Championships
then went on to earn All-Conference honors at Santa Rosa Junior College (1982-83) and Sonoma State (1988-89)
He played professionally in Holland and Germany
and with the North Bay Breakers of the United Soccer League
most lasting impact in his hometown and county
Each of Mary Munion’s soccer-crazed sons took a torch from Joe Belluzzo
and now referees; Dwayne has coached the men’s team at UC-Davis for the last quarter century
While they’ve all done more than their share to grow and popularize o jogo bonito — the beautiful game
he returned to Montgomery High from 1996 to 2004
capturing three NCS titles and posting a record of 161-49-14
Twice he was voted California Coach of the Year
He was named Redwood Empire Coach of the Year four times
He had coaching stints at Cardinal Newman High School
and with numerous club and pro teams such as the Sonoma County Sol and North Bay Breakers
A larger piece of his legacy was the dramatic turnaround he performed at the Santa Rosa United Soccer Club
Moribund and mediocre when he took over as its director in the late 1990s
Shaffer turned the club into an overachieving dynamo
His teams more than held their own against clubs from Chicago and Los Angeles — sprawling metropolises with access to a million or more youth
Santa Rosa United teams under Shaffer were winning regional and national titles
“when we had 50,000 kids to draw on — when Santa Rosa was still a neighborhood kind of city,” said Don
“David put his life and soul into building that program,” he continued
“When he was younger he might have been a little over the top,” he recalled
adopted a softer approach “14 or 15 years ago.”
a high school teammate and wingman of Shaffer’s who remained one of his closest friends over the last four decades
While they were “very similar” in their “demanding” coaching styles
Shaffer had a slightly “easier way about him
whom Shaffer tagged with the nickname Pepe when they were at Montgomery
A player on an opposing team vaguely resembled Oberkirch
Oberkirch would henceforth be known as Pepe
“To this day my own father doesn’t call me by my first name,” said Oberkirch
“The only thing bigger than your heart was your wonderful laugh. You are missed immensely,” wrote one the dozens of grieving players, friends and parents on the Real Salt Lake-AZ Facebook page
“Will miss his spirit for sure,” added another
“He was a great coach who cared about the kids on and off the pitch
and at providing a place where they could “learn and have fun.”

Meggen LU was voted the best municipality in Switzerland - thanks to low taxes

The municipalities were compared with a total of 51 factors

The data is based primarily on public statistics and real estate price models from Iazi AG

Zurich is in 54th place (previous year 45th)

The Neuchâtel municipality with 10,550 inhabitants is the place with the highest taxes in Switzerland
