Investment in Zeiss SMT division intended to help development of high-numerical-aperture optics for extreme ultraviolet lithography
Zeiss' expansion near OberkochenLithography company ASML is to invest €1 billion cash in a subsidiary of Zeiss
in a bid to aid the development of advanced optics needed in future extreme ultraviolet (EUV) systems
The Carl Zeiss SMT (semiconductor manufacturing technology) division is a key player in the lithography ecosystem
providing the high-performance optics used in ASML’s scanner systems – and is described by ASML as its “most important strategic partner”
€1 billion buys ASML a 25 per cent stake in the division
while it will also support the anticipated €760 million spend on research and capital expenditure required over the next six years to bring the high-numerical-aperture (NA) optics to full commercialization
successful scaling of device features on the chips in the longer term will require optics with a higher numerical aperture than the initial generation from Zeiss
ASML’s CEO Peter Wennink explained that although the first chips made on current EUV scanners are expected to roll off the production lines in 2018
the two companies were already looking beyond that milestone
“We see a long and successful future for EUV lithography in advanced chip manufacturing and with this agreement we set the right conditions for development of the next generation of EUV by ASML and Carl Zeiss SMT,” Wennink added
EUV insertion roadmapASML sees high-NA optics as the key to extending the shrink of device features with EUV
helping its chip manufacturing customers to scale Moore’s law to subsequent device nodes with less complexity than would be the case with an alternative multi-patterning approach
The initial EUV systems have an optical system with NA of 0.33
whereas the future optics will have NA in excess of 0.5
meaning that several generations of geometric chip scaling ought to be possible
as it circumvents complex and expensive 0.33 NA EUV multiple patterning,” he said
“High-NA EUV is a robust way for chips to scale all the way down to the sub-3 nm logic node in a single exposure with high productivity and reduced cost per feature.”
ASML will also support €220 million of R&D spending at Carl Zeiss SMT
along with an expected €540 million of capital expenditure and other supply chain investments over the next six years
That investment will largely be focused on Carl Zeiss SMT’s Oberkochen headquarters in Germany
with plenty of new jobs likely to be created
EUV progressIn recent weeks ASML’s key customers have said how they plan to introduce the technology
with Samsung expecting to adopt EUV for the 7 nm node
and TSMC set to use it “extensively” in its 5 nm logic device production
Intel has said that it could deploy EUV in its 7 nm process flow – provided that uptime
but CEO Sanjay Jha pointed out at the firm’s technology conference in September that if it doesn’t use EUV
more than 84 mask processing steps would be needed – highlighting the potential value of EUV for simplifying the wafer patterning process
High-power lasers play a critical role in EUV
with 40 kW carbon dioxide systems from Trumpf currently used to produce the EUV-emitting plasmas that provide the broadband source light needed
fluctuations in laser and therefore EUV source power are one of the issues that still needs to be ironed out before full volume production of semiconductor wafers with the technology begins

MAN Truck & Bus recently handed over a fully electric MAN eTGM to Schwarz Logistik GmbH
The 26-tonne distribution truck will be used for delivering production supplies to ZEISS in Oberkochen
The vehicle is one of a small series of electric trucks that MAN has been delivering to various European customers since the end of 2019
recently put a fully electric MAN eTGM into operation
The new electric truck will be used to deliver production supplies to the optics and electronics group ZEISS in Oberkochen
the vehicle will bring preliminary products from the Schwarz logistics centre in Herbrechtingen to Oberkochen three to four times a day for just-in-time delivery to ZEISS
A charging station installed right alongside the loading ramp allows for reliable charging of the MAN eTGM
This ensures that the loading period is used to supply the electric truck with the electrical energy it requires. In order to guarantee the most sustainable operation of the swap body vehicle
Schwarz is currently working on an intelligent charge control system to charge the electric truck with solar energy during the day and at weekends via its own solar panels on the roof of the logistics centre
“It is enormously beneficial that we at the Schwarz Group are able to play an active role in shaping the e-mobility movement at an early stage
This allows us to offer our customers emission-free transport solutions that are available at short notice,” emphasised Managing Director Thomas Schwarz on the day the fully electric truck was handed over
The MAN eTGM went into small-series production in November 2019 and meets all of the key demands placed on the inner-city goods transport services of the future: It is quiet and operates with zero local emissions
the truck’s payload is great enough that it can take care of its usual transportation tasks
which is designed for medium and heavy-duty distribution transport
can be configured as a vehicle with a refrigerated body
The fully electric distribution vehicle has a total permissible weight of 26 tonnes and is powered by a 264 kW (360 hp) electric motor
which provides a maximum torque of 3,100 Nm
air compressors and the air-conditioning system are electric
with the energy management system controlling them as required to ensure energy savings
By means of brake energy recovery (so-called “recuperation”) the kinetic energy of the vehicle when coasting and braking is converted into electrical energy and returned to the battery storage
A display in the cockpit informs the driver about the batteries’ current energy level
The power for the truck is delivered by high-performance lithium-ion batteries from the Volkswagen Group
These are located beneath the cab above the front axle
where the diesel driveline is located in conventional vehicles
Other batteries can be found on the vehicle frame
Depending on the field of application and climatic and topographic conditions
the MAN eTGM boasts a range of up to 200 kilometres
The batteries can be charged using alternating current with a charging capacity of 22 or 44 kW
or with 150 kW of direct current in what is known as “high-power charging”
“We are delighted that we are able to play a leading role in a movement as pioneering as e-mobility in Baden-Württemberg

the number of committed employees has grown steadily with more than 300 employees at over 40 sites worldwide now involved in over 30 projects
Chip toolmaking giant ASML said on Friday it was gearing up production of its new $350 million “High NA EUV” machine
a device the size of a double decker bus central to its bid to keep its lead in a $125 billion market. The machine
which went on display for the first time on Friday in the Dutch headquarters of Europe’s largest tech company by market value
is aimed at Intel and other makers of the highest-end semiconductors
ASML said it was expecting to ship “a number” of them this year
and there was still work to do on customising and installation.“We keep engineering and developing and there’s a lot of work to be done to calibrate it and make sure it fits into the manufacturing system,” ASML spokesperson Monique Mols said
“There’s also a steep learning curve for us and our customers.”ASML is the only maker of a key technology — extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography – needed to manufacture the most advanced chips.High NA EUV is the next generation of that technology
But analysts said it was an open question how many customers are ready to switch over to the high-cost devices.“While some chipmakers may introduce it earlier in an attempt to gain technology leadership
the majority will not adopt it until it makes sense economically,” Jeff Koch of Semianalysis
said.Customers could choose to wait and squeeze more out of existing tools
said on Friday an inflection point is coming around 2026-2027.“This is the point clients will take it into volume production,” she told reporters.Intel has already taken delivery of one pilot device
and said it plans to start production next year
without giving details on the scale of the operation
TSMC and Samsung have said they intend to use the tool but have not specified when.ASML says it has taken between 10 and 20 orders to date — including pilot devices for memory specialists SK Hynix and Micron — and is building capacity to be able to deliver 20 annually by 2028
as the United States seeks to curb exports of cutting-edge technology there and stymie Beijing’s semiconductor ambitions.Last month though
considered a bellwether for the chip industry
reported a robust order book which soothed investors’ concerns that limits on China would hurt its performance.A quick take-up of the tool would boost ASML’s sales and margins and could extend its dominant position in the market for lithography systems
machines that use light to help trace out patterns on silicon wafers that will eventually become the circuitry of computer chips. It says the High NA tool will let chipmakers shrink the size of the smallest features on their chips by up to 40%
allowing density of transistors to nearly triple
ASML competes with Nikon and Canon of Japan to make the lithography machines used to make relatively older generations of chips. But in the late 2010s
the Dutch firm became the first and only company to market a lithography tool using EUV
Both the original and High NA machine create EUV light by vaporizing droplets of tin with twin laser pulses 50,000 times a second.ASML says the High NA machine’s biggest change is a larger optical system consisting of irregularly shaped mirrors
polished so smooth they must be kept in a vacuum
They collect and focus more light than their predecessors – High NA stands for high numerical aperture – which is what the company says leads to better resolution.($1 = 0.9269 euros)Editor’s Note: Reporting by Toby Sterling; Editing by Andrew Heavens
Samsung Electronics has bolstered its strategic partnership with ZEISS Group in the area of chip production technologies, in a move to achieve better yields and improve its performance in next-generation memory chips, the electronics giant said Sunday.
ZEISS obtains thousands of core patents for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technologies used for state-of-the-art chip production. The company is the exclusive supplier of optical systems for ASML’s EUV lithography equipment. More than 30,000 ZEISS components are used for one piece of EUV equipment. EUV is considered the most important tool when it comes to manufacturing semiconductors.
Under the partnership, Samsung aims to maximize the production efficiency of its memory chips, thereby improving its yields and leveling up the overall competitiveness of its chip business, the company said.
Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong took a business trip to the headquarters of ZEISS in Germany to solidify their technological ties in chip production.
Lee met with top executives from ZEISS – such as ZEISS Group CEO Karl Lamprecht and ZEISS Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology CEO Andreas Pecher – and exchanged their ideas on the latest chip technologies and their roadmap for a mid-to longer-term partnership. The Samsung chief also took a look at the production process of ZEISS equipment by visiting a factory of the German firm there.
ZEISS Group is also set to expand its presence in the Korean market with an investment plan to build its research and development center here. The investment, valued at 48 billion won (approximately $34.8 million), is set to continue through 2026 and is anticipated to strengthen their bilateral alliance, according to Samsung.

Powered by the EUV tech partnership, Samsung Electronics is set to mass-produce its sixth-generation 10-nanometer-class DRAM no later than the end of this year.
“Lee will also hold various business meetings with local clients by visiting not just Germany, but France and Italy, during the business trip,” an official from Samsung Electronics said. “The move is aimed at finding the firm’s next growth engines, while at the same time, tightening its footing in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market.”
Starting last year, Lee has met with a number of overseas tech moguls, such as Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, ASML CEO Peter Wennink and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Samsung Electronics is seeking to expand its presence in not just memory, but non-memory chip areas — such as the image sensors and neural processing units (NPU) — in a bid to reduce its heavy reliance on the memory chip business.

It is one of the oldest yet most successful companies in optics and photonics in the world
Zeiss’ President and CEO Michael Kaschke handed over to Karl Lamprecht on April 1st
While there is not much to say about this smooth transition beyond a notice from last year, it is well worth a look at Zeiss and its success story. Carl Zeiss founded a workshop in Jena
His startup became successful with microscopes
He joined forces with physicist Ernst Abbe and chemist Otto Schott to build a list of precision optical devices
making the brand Zeiss known all over the world
So Zeiss went through a difficult transition process until about 2000
the telecom crisis with dramatic drops at the stock market and strong investments into the semiconductor manufacturing technology (SMT) business of Zeiss
A new factory for lithographic optics (i.e
systems used for making semiconductor chips) was completed in 2006 – a risky bet with a € 450 million investment into a volatile market
But it became a billion dollar success story
As did the medical business which was strengthened with the formation of the Carl Zeiss Meditec AG in 2002
diversification is one of the reasons for success of the Zeiss group in recent years
While the market for semiconductor equipment still goes up and down more than 25%
the other three segments can compensate if needed
It was under Kaschke’s reign that all four segments of the group (SMT
Consumer markets) reached more than one billion revenue each
Michael Kaschke took over as President and CEO in 2010
he had collected experience in several positions within the company: He managed the medical technology business for some critical years
to name but a few of his engagements since he had joined Zeiss in 1992
In 2020, the German business magazine brandeins characterized him as a truly exceptional manager
A statement that may hold true in several ways
he is one of the very few East-Germans who made it up to the top level of German management
throughout his whole career he was well known for his deep understanding of scientific and technical details
he could have started a scientific career as well
He had completed a PhD in physics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1986 where his fellow students described him as a brilliant physicist
But when the wall came down he went to America and joined the ibm labs at Yorktown Heights for two years
His talents may have helped him to not only understand complex scientific
it matches perfectly with the strategic core of Zeiss: Converting latest technology into successful products
And it needed a leader like Kaschke to bring this spirit into the 21rst century
it was 2016 when Zeiss started its own scientific symposium
Artificial intelligence in optics or the quantum world were topics of this conference
And this was not “l’art pour l’art” – digitization became an integral part of the strategy
laid down in the “ZEISS Agenda 2020 – Customer
it was the appreciation of latest scientific developments
an excellent internal and external communication as well as a healthy diversification policy that brought Zeiss to where it stands today

Germany should be restored to a growth path and should give new impulse to innovation, along with its European partners. Because prosperity is a significant guarantor of a stable democracy. Digital sovereignty is the anchor of a strong Europe. Germany can once again be a country of pioneering innovation and a pacesetter for the continent. For this, comprehensive modernization of the state is indispensable. The Bertelsmann Stiftung presented its proposals at the annual press conference.

The Q&A segment following all that though did reveal some pretty surprising details between the two companies of said collab
ZEISS decided working with vivo was a good idea because their goals align
but the optics brand did also mention that it hopes that this working relationship will be a long-term one
just as the one it has with Sony is still ongoing
the company is not going out of its way to look for more licensing deals as that sort of branding is not a core business
As for what this working relationship is like
this involves weekly calls and frequent workshopping with each other
both ZEISS and vivo would bring up new ideas as to imaging tech that can be brought from the markets that the optics company in involved in into mobile imaging
There was even mention of dedicated personnel responsible for thinking about new feature implementations
When asked if there was any advancement that the pair of companies have achieved as a result of the collab that would have otherwise been impossible or taken longer
one answer we got was the bokeh effects that were specific to ZEISS lenses being available on mobile
And the reason for this was because it was vivo that decided to emulate the effects via software
The role of the optics company in this scenario was simply to provide consultation and feedback
as it would know its own camera lenses best
If it weren’t for the initiative of the Chinese phone maker
Another response came when asked about if there would be more software imitations of ZEISS lenses on vivo phones such as more bokeh effects. The question was answered with the company’s 178-year history having a rich library of things to pull from

The device became standard in the PERI R17 commander's sight in Germany in 2013
Cassidian said more than 100 Leopard 2s operated in Germany
Canada and Denmark are to receive the upgrade under the contract

unseren Kunden zeitnah funktionierende emissionsfreie Transportlösungen anzubieten“
