Although the home fans had hoped to celebrate host-nation success the 25,400-strong capacity crowd were nevertheless treated to high-quality entertainment World Cup leader Pius Paschke (GER) gave them hope However, ultimately Kraft, who attained an overall points haul of 335.1, together with Jan Hoerl (331.6) and Daniel Tschofenig (323.6) would move ahead those were the two best jumps of the season for me,” remarked Kraft but was without a victory during this campaign but I had my first World Cup victory here in 2014 and that was perhaps a bit more emotional but it’s crazy to jump in such a great amazing atmosphere Kraft continued; “It was really high (standard of competition) really long jumps the audience had a great performance from us Despite placing fourth Paschke retains position one in the overall World Cup rankings with 765 points with Tschofenig (696) third and Kraft (567) fourth The field will reconvene in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) on Tuesday during qualifying for the second Four Hills tournament with Innsbruck hosting the action from 3-4 January before the conclusion to the Four Hills contest in Bischofshofen the field had first come through qualifying to reaching the first round ‘proper’ The top 50 were then placed into a series of duels as would five ‘lucky losers’ who recorded points scores which ranked among the top five non-automatic qualifiers The scores from the first round would be retained and added to the second round to determine the overall standings The points total from each of the contests during the 2024/25 Four Hills Tournament will be combined to determine who becomes this season’s overall winner and takes home the Golden Eagle title Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal (NOR) attained an impressive third-place finish at the Titisee-Neustadt World Cup just two weeks ago but found himself in 27th after qualification here The 2023 men’s large hill World silver medallist showed much improved form when it really mattered though and his jump of 134m would see him not only ease into the second round to ensure they would pick up strong World Cup points Andreas Wellinger (GER) would not be repeating that success in 2024 though with 129m (139.9 points) ensuring he progressed Another who excelled during the 2023/24 campaign was the defending ‘Golden Eagle’ title-holder Ryoyu Kobayashi (JPN) but only by 0.7 points and that suggested the destination of the overall Four Hills crown was unlikely to be heading to a Japanese jumper Pawel Wasek (POL) made the biggest progress between qualifying and the first round Having placed 42nd the first time he leapt from the hill competitively, he improved dramatically to rank ninth heading into the decider – and also defeated Beijing 2022 Olympic bronze medallist Karl Geiger (GER) in the process Paschke (GER) has won five World Cup contests this season during his best-ever campaign on the circuit The 34-year-old showed he was edging back towards his best with a jump of 138m Just two athletes, both from Austria, would better that; Jan Hoerl (134.5m / 165.9pts) and Stefan Kraft (138m / 167.2pts) Japanese duo Ren Nikaido and Naoki Nakamura both made significant strides rising six and five places respectively from round one to two after recording impressive jumps of 142m and 140.5m respectively Climbing even higher – and delighting the German crowd – was one of their own which gave him an overall total of 300 points and an improvement of ten places Also celebrating after landing 140.5m / 168 points was Daniel Tschofenig (AUT) but his second jump score put him into podium contention Paschke’s grimace after landing suggested he did not think his effort (133.5m / 321.3 points total) would be enough and it was soon confirmed he would be fourth Hoerl (AUT) is currently on-track to record his best-ever season on the tour and continues to demonstrate impressive consistency during 2024/25 after jumps of 134.5m and 135m underlines predictions that he could win a first-ever Four Hills crown this season with Tschofenig’s stunning second round not only securing him second behind Hoerl before referring to team-mate Kraft – who won his first event of the season after jumps of 138m and 135.5m – as a “legend.” “It was an amazing job from the whole team the staff and the coaches who all did great and I’m sure we’ll take a lot going into Garmisch-Partenkirchen.” Austrian head coach Andreas Widhoelzl (AUT) told FIS he was impressed with his team’s performance after backing up a strong showing in the qualifiers on Saturday “It was not easy after qualification (due to expectation and pressure) so I’m really glad the boys did a really good job today “We saw nerves were there and some did not jump so great but for the team it’s a really successful day on a hill where last year we had problems “Ski jumping can be so easy and also so hard,” continued Widhoelzl “Now it’s easy for us because the self-confidence is really good and strong results in Engelberg (last weekend) helped.” 31.12.2024 – 13:30 – Start Qualification – QUA Men’s LH01.01.2025 – 14:00 – Competition start – WC Men’s LH  03.01.2025 – 13:30 – Start Qualification – QUA Men’s LH04.01.2025 – 13:30 – Competition start – WC Men’s LH  05.01.2025 – 16:30 – Start Qualification – QUA Men’s LH06.01.2025 – 16:30 – Competition start – WC Men’s LH *All times are in CET (Central European Time) and are subject to change Kraft consolidated his lead from the first round by sticking his landing in the second to claim his first World Cup victory of the season with a total score of 335.1 points The 31-year-old former world champion made the perfect start to his bid to regain the Four Hills Golden Eagle trophy a decade after he won it the first time Tschofenig briefly took pole position courtesy of a second-round monster jump of 140.5m who held his composure to claim an impressive 44th individual World Cup win making a flying gesture with his hand at the bottom of the hill The next round of the Four Hills tournament will be held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on 1 January 2025. At the Nebelhorn Trophy on Saturday (21 September) it was the turn of Elyce Lin-Gracey to stand atop the podium after another outstanding skate in Oberstdorf and she did the same in the free skate to score a comprehensive victory ahead of world silver medallist Isabeau Levito Skating to 'Wadjet' and 'Cleopatra's Death' by Claude-Michel Schoenberg Lin-Gracey showed no sign of nerves as she secured by far the biggest win of her career having finished second to Sarah Everhardt at last month's Cranberry Cup After her fifth place in the short program Levito put together a much-improved jumping display in her skate to Liszt's 'Liebestraum' to move up to second Yoshida Hana almost certainly would have displaced Levito from second had she not popped a triple Lutz near the end of her routine Having landed a fine triple Axel at the start the Japanese finished just one-hundredth of a point behind Levito on the free skate - and 1.67 points behind overall - as she took third place She was fifth on the day to finish fourth overall Swiss skater Livia Kaiser was fourth on the day but just failed to overhaul Chiba in the total standings former European silver medallist Kimmy Repond was sixth after moving up four spots from the short program The 24-year-old landed a total of 453.7 points to finish 5.1 points clear of Johann Andre Forfang (NOR), who led the standings after the first round. Domen Prevc (SLO) finished in third with 444.9 points. Zajc secured Slovenia's first win of the 2024/25 FIS Ski Jumping World Cup season thanks to a superb second jump. “I have my fourth win here (in Oberstdorf), so it’s amazing for me”, Zajc said afterward. “I really just love this hill. I had my first-ever (World Cup) win in Oberstdorf, too, and I just like it here.” "Since I've been competing in Oberstdorf, I've won once every year. The first jump was quite challenging, but in the second I managed to attack." “Today, the second jump was perfect for me. I did a good landing and got good points”, Zajc added. “I hope for one more podium (finish) tomorrow.” The second jump was indeed where Zajc made the difference. The Slovenian came from behind after the first round to secure the win. Johann Andre Forfang (NOR) led the way at the halfway point after a strong first outing (227.6) had given him a 1.9-point lead over Zajc. “I feel confident ahead of the next round”, Forfang said after his first jump. “It was a good jump. For sure, it (the final) will be exciting”, he added. Zajc proved just that as he set the standard with a superb second jump (228.0 points) to finish with a total of 453.7 points, a score Forfang did not manage to beat. Forfang did record the furthest jump of the day (235.0 points), however, but his form and style were not quite good enough to surpass Zajc. A difference of 5.1 points eventually separated the Zajc and Forfang, while Domen Prevc (SLO) completed the podium (444.9). Current World Cup leader Daniel Tschofenig (AUT), who sat in third after the first round, came 0.8 points short for a place on the podium and finished fourth. "Of course, it hurts to miss out on the podium by 0.8 points. You always want to be on top, but there are days like these," Tschofenig said. It's the first time this season Austria misses out on a podium finish. Tschofenig was the best Austrian jumper in fourth, while 2024 world Ski Flying champion Stefan Kraft was disqualified after a suit permeability. Ryoyu Kobayashi (JPN) returned to the top-10 for the first time this season as he landed in fifth. Kobayashi sat in seventh place after the first round and managed to move up two more places with his second jump. Also noteworthy was his teammate Naoki Nakamura (JPN)'s result, who finished ninth. Nakamura especially impressed the crowd with his first jump, recording a distance of 226.5 meters, finishing among the furthest jumps of the day. Competition in Oberstdorf, Germany, continues with one more Ski Flying event on Sunday for the men. While the men compete in Germany this weekend, the women settled down in Zao, Japan, with three competitions lined up. The first competition, the individual event on Friday, was won by Nika Prevc (SLO). The Slovenian also took the lead in the overall standings and now has a seven-point advantage over Germany’s Katharina Schmid. Another individual competition in Zao is scheduled for Sunday. Germany’s Selina Freitag and Agnes Reisch claimed victory in the Women’s Super Team event on Saturday. Granerud (516 points) moved into third place courtesy of his win in Oberstdorf.  The second leg of the Four Hills Tournament takes place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on 1 January. After the initial Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) World Cup qualifying (30 Dec) and main competition (31 Dec) the field will then reconvene in Oberstdorf (GER) for the conclusion (1 Jan) The event, which was originally known as the ‘Silvester Tour’ and took place across Austria and Slovenia, was rebranded as the ‘Two Nights Tour’ for the 2023/24 campaign It now takes place in Germany, matching the start of the men’s Four Hills Tournament with each of the two legs taking place in the reverse order to the men’s competition The two competitions also share similar rules with qualifiers also set to face-off in a series of duels to decide the placements and qualifiers for the final competition round The ski jumper with the highest overall points total from the two World Cup events will be crowned the 2024/25 'Two Nights Tour' champion The format is very cool and will definitely be exciting!– Lisa Eder (AUT)Austrian Eder is currently third in the overall World Cup standings and is looking to “pick up” where she left off after attaining two podium finishes so far this season with the season’s standout performer Schmid (GER) currently atop of the rankings The German is keen to build on her three victories and two second-place finishes so far during her 2024/25 campaign particularly now she is back competing in her homeland “It’s really special to jump in front of my home crowd in both Garmisch and Oberstdorf,” Schmid tells FIS friends and also my fan club will be there cheering for me and I hope other spectators will come to support us as well.” Team-mate Selina Freitag (GER) is fourth in the World Cup standings thanks largely to her second and third-place finishes on the opening weekend of the season in Lillehammer (NOR) The 23-year-old is looking to return to form after challenging events in Zhangjiakou (CHN) and Engelberg (SUI) in recent weeks “After all the weeks we’ve been through I have a really good feeling,” says Freitag “I’m really looking forward to the Tour Nights Tour as I’ve jumped a lot in Garmisch and I know Oberstdorf “I think it will be really cool jumping and I hope we have some good weather too.” the men’s Four Hills competition moves on to two further venues in Austria and there is growing optimism that the women’s calendar will match this format in the coming seasons "Every year in which the women are not involved in analogue events (matching the men’s program) is a lost year for ski jumping in general and for the women in particular," said German Ski Association sports director Horst Hüttel “There’s a small chance of implementing the whole things as early as 25/26 but it should be ready by the season after the next Winter Olympics in 2026 at the latest.” fully supports the idea of an expanded Two Nights Tour to replicate the men’s Four Hills Tournament but I’m just happy we have the competitions and of course it’s very important that they are on German hills.” 30.12.2024 – 17:30 – Start Qualification – QUA Women's LH31.12.2024 – 16:20 – Competition start – WC Women's LH 01.01.2025 – 14:45 – Start Qualification – QUA Women's LH01.01.2025 – 16:15 – Competition start – WC Women's LH while the USA teenager improved on her personal best mark from last month to top the women's short Picture by Eric Bolte-USA TODAY SportsBy Lena SmirnovaDeniss Vasiljevs claimed a suprise top spot in the men's short program at the ISU Challenger Series Nebelhorn Trophy 2024 in Oberstdorf He also had the highest technical and program component scores across the field Actually so much that I kind of have a blank for the three minutes on the ice I don’t really know what happened but I had a lot of fun," Vasiljevs told Golden Skate after his performance "This ice rink is maybe the best in the world Vasiljevs did indeed seem to have a great time on the ice smiling throughout his techno short program which he debuted at a show in Japan in July The Latvian skater started off with a triple Axel followed by a triple Lutz-toe loop combination Vasiljevs later shared that he considered adding a quad into the mix as well and while he landed the jump in the warm-up he ultimately opted to keep it out of the short program in Oberstdorf I feel physically ready but maybe not all the way ready to go for everything," he explained to Golden Skate "It was decided already before that I won’t go for the quad in the SP and I sticked to it.” It was Yamamoto's first competition of the season and he later spoke about feeling some stiffness in the execution of his elements, particularly when going for the quadruple Salchow. Skating to a melancholic "Split, Postcards from Far Away", the Japanese skater landed a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop to start, but doubled his Salchow attempt. He tried to recover with a triple Axel, but was shaky on the landing and finished with 79.00 points overall. The men's singles event will conclude with the free program on Friday (20 September), starting at 13:15 local time. USA's Elyce Lin-Gracey set a personal best to top the women's short program It was the second Top 3 finish in the Challenger Series this season for the 17-year-old who also finished second in the season's opener in August That performance was a personal best mark for Lin-Gracey as well but she managed to improve on it by more than three points in Oberstdorf with a clean and smooth delivery of Drew Meekins' choreography Looking ethereal as she slid across the ice to Lara Fabian's poignant ballad "Broken Vow" the USA skater opened the program with a seemingly effortless triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination followed by a double Axel and a triple flip to earn a total score of 71.16 “I felt very nervous going into today because I really wanted to do even better than at Cranberry Cup but when I stepped on the ice it felt very comfortable," she told Golden Skate after "I am very happy that I could skate another strong SP My goal for the LP is to maybe also achive a PB.” Japan's Chiba Mone is heading into the free program on Saturday (21 September) in second place while Switzerland's Livia Kaiser is in third with 62.87 points The 24-year-old dazzled the spectators in Oberstdorf Germany with his complex jump combinations in the free skate which included a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop a triple Axel-triple Salchow and a triple flip-double Axel to finish The clean delivery of his choreography earned Yamamoto 183.72 points to boost his overall score to a winning 262.72 but it was Yamamoto who ultimately claimed a top spot for Japan with this performance The last Japanese man to win an ISU Challenger Series event was Miura Kao in early October 2023 “I am much more happy with the free skate than with the short program and I am really glad to have won here at my first time in Oberstdorf," Yamamoto said a press conference after the event "I decided to not go for the quad flip and replace it with a triple loop after this morning’s practice That’s why I was able to concentrate on all the other jumps” Frangipani gave a solid effort with two quad jumps to start and dynamic choreography filled with his signature dramatic flair. A natural showman, the Italian skated right up to the spectator stands and slid on his back at one point in the program, which he finished by joyusly punching the ice with both fists. His free program score of 166.93 and overall score of 246.11 kept him in the second spot he held coming into the final skate. The leader of the short program Deniss Vasiljevs was not able to defend his top status, however, after stumbling on two jumps. The Latvian skater landed several quadruple Salchows during his morning training in Oberstdorf, but fell on this jump at the start of his free competition. While Vasiljevs was able to regain his momentum for the following jumps and deliver an emotional choreography set to "La Bayadere" by Ludwig Minkus, he lost more points when he touched the ice with both feet on his finishing triple loop and was not surprised when the scoreboard showed his fall in the rankings. “It was a good start. While I feel like my SP is around 60 per cent ready, I think this LP is at 35, maybe 40 per cent," Vasiljevs told Golden Skate. "This program is quite challenging to me for some reasons. I have to build it up. You have to be graceful, you have to build it up, you have to be in that ballet posture all the time. It still feels very athletic and tense but I think I have to breathe more during that program." Vasiljevs collected 151.94 points for his free skate to put him in third place with an overall score of 235.72. rising from tenth place after the short program to fourth after the free skate the third highest-scoring program across the field His right ankle and left hip are among the persistent issues making the 2023-24 season a difficult one for the figure skating veteran Cha shared how he continued to compete without sufficient recovery time and vowed to use the season he called a "failure" as a learning opportunity “This is one of my personal favourite programs," Cha said about Uno's routine. "But I take a different approach to this music and I think it is a very different program.” While Cha fell on his quadruple toe loop and stumbled on some landings, it was a welcome sight to his fans to see the skater land all his triple jumps and meet the demands of the program's energetic choreography. “I did my best today," Cha told Golden Skate. "After the practices I decided to lower my technical content a bit. I want to work on that for the next competitions.” His free program score of 158.67 catapulted Cha into first place, which he held until the final rotation. He finished fourth overall with 228.48 points. Fascism through the Eyes of Everyday People. She is the co-author, with Angelika Patel, of A Village in the Third Reich: How Ordinary Lives were Transformed by the Rise of Fascism publishing April 4 with Simon and Schuster At first sight it would seem unlikely that the Bavarian village of Oberstdorf has much to tell us about the Third Reich it is the most southern village in Germany located 100 miles southwest of the nearest city such was the grip of National Socialism on German society that even in this remote place there was scarcely any aspect of Nazi rule or of the Second World War that did not touch its 4000-odd inhabitants one way or another lead us to ask that all-important question – “what would I have done?” Oberstdorfers—deeply Catholic and conservative by nature —were drawn to Hitler by his promise to implement strong government to expunge the ignominy of the Treaty of Versailles and to put Germany back where it belonged at the top table of nations Only a couple of months after the Armistice Quakers from England and America were already in Germany preaching their message of hope and reconciliation Their reports on the countless conversations they held with ordinary Germans make it clear that even though people were cold and starving even though they were stricken with grief and fearful of the violence erupting in so many cities it was the humiliation of having their country treated like a pariah that pained them most Humiliation as a driver of conflict has arguably been underestimated Putin’s fury at what he saw as the disgrace of the dissolution of the Soviet empire is often cited as a cause of his invasion of Ukraine Although a majority of villagers voted for Hitler in the March 1933 election they were quite unprepared for the draconian measures imposed on them by their first Nazi mayor an outsider who treated their traditions and institutions with open contempt Oberstdorf was not the only rural community that did the villagers have much time for the storm troopers (SA) whose aggression and noisy parades were so damaging to the tourist economy on which this once poor rural community now largely depended In common with many other small towns and villages Oberstdorf’s residents exhibited a wide range of attitudes toward the regime Unquestionably there were plenty of Nazis in the village many of whom were to remain dedicated to Hitler to the bitter end and beyond having started out as committed party-members changed their minds as it became ever harder to ignore the true nature of the Third Reich Initially seduced by Hitler’s determination to restore Germany’s prestige and prosperity assumed that once securely in power the Nazis’ more extreme policies and rhetoric would subside we might ask why Fink did not protest or resign The truth is that any such act of defiance would have condemned him to a concentration camp or the guillotine And even had he been courageous enough to accept that fate His wife and two sons (one of whom was epileptic) would have been left destitute Fink’s response to his loss of faith in National Socialism was to mitigate as much as possible the worst effects of Nazi rule in the village He tried to protect the handful of Jews living there and helped the local nuns when they were targeted by the regime He defended villagers threatened with imprisonment for infringing any one of the Nazis’ countless petty rules and regulations and in the last months of the war refused to carry out orders to execute villagers attempting to surrender The burning question is how much did Fink and his villagers know about Nazi atrocities—the concentration camps the disabled and anyone else the Nazis didn’t like A teenager from the village was gassed in Hitler’s so-called “euthanasia” program because he was blind Soldiers who had witnessed or had themselves perpetrated barbaric deeds were continually returning home on leave At least some of them must have unburdened themselves to their families and friends who claimed descent from the composer’s family was responsible for organizing the murder of 700 Roma in the Crimea What did he tell his wife and friends when he was back in Oberstdorf “we thought we were saving Western civilization.” Then there were the assorted camps that existed close to the village—a Waffen-SS training camp Dachau subcamps and several forced labor camps Every day the villagers saw foreign slave workers being marched to and fro and can hardly have been unaware of the appalling conditions in which they lived there stood a Nazi castle often visited by party bigwigs including Himmler who went there specifically to brief local Nazis on the Final Solution when Messerschmitt and BMW moved their operations out of Augsburg and Munich to escape the bombing several manufactories were established in and around Oberstdorf first with evacuees from the bombing and then with refugees fleeing the Russians While villagers loyal to Hitler blamed reports of atrocities on enemy propaganda those who had detested the regime from the start needed little convincing they were true once they realized how catastrophically they had been duped just wanted to keep their heads down and somehow stay alive until it was all over Immediately after the war when Oberstdorfers—like Germans everywhere—came close to starvation they were too absorbed in trying to rebuild their lives to spend much time contemplating their own or Germany’s culpability Their one overriding desire was to extinguish all memories of Hitler and National Socialism Germany has been impeccable in examining its Nazi past In recent times the focus has shifted from the leading figures of the Third Reich to ordinary Germans and the moral decisions they made in what can only be described as the most far-reaching tragedy and crime in human history Deutschen Meisterschaften im Eiskunstlaufen in Oberstdorf haben sich am Samstag in den Meisterklasse-Wettbewerben die Favoriten Total top to bottom would have to be 6km and is a great run If you are thinking of a ski trip to Germany and are looking at Garmisch The Oberstdorf area not only boasts the Nebelhorn but the Fellhorn and several great day resorts in Kleinwalsertal too Click here to submit your own review of Oberstdorf-Nebelhorn View detailed snow forecast for Oberstdorf-Nebelhorn at:snow-forecast.com with Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud and compatriot Robert Johansson completing the podium Picture by 2021 Getty ImagesKobayashi Ryoyu produced a stunning 141m second-round jump to win the men’s large hill World Cup competition on the second day of the 70th 4-Hills-Tournament in Oberstdorf Following victory in qualifying on Tuesday the Japanese athlete registered an opening round jump of 128.5m which left him needing something special to secure victory and make ground on overall World Cup leader Karl Geiger of Germany However, when it mattered, Kobayashi delivered. report of powder or fresh snow conditions several days after snow last fell off-piste new snow will be tracked out within hours of a fresh fall but wherever crowds are light in relation to the accessible terrain it will be possible to stay fresh much later strong winds sometimes redistribute powder snow enough to cover old tracks or it may simply be that the ski area was not fully open for some period after the snow fell so fresh snow that fell a while ago has remained un-tracked until this report Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow conditions will change too so it is important to check the time and date of the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow report and to guess what effect the weather will have had on snow quality between then and now the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow report on Friday afternoon may indicate fresh powder but if Friday night is mild and rainy then ski conditions will be very poor on Saturday morning the same snow report can be valid for more than a week We advise that you check the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow forecast to see if conditions are likely to change before your visit Many skiers enjoy moguls and fast icy pistes but for off-piste skiers and free-ride snowboarders fresh snow starts to deteriorate from the moment it settles rain and periods of above-freezing temperature are the primary cause of the evolution from fresh powder to windslab High altitude slopes that are shaded from the sun and sheltered from the wind preserve powder stashes longer after fresh snowfall If the snow report mentions pockets of powder at Oberstdorf-Fellhorn study the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn piste map in relation to the wind direction to determine the most likely locations We stress the importance of checking the date on the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow report particularly around weekends the snow report for Oberstdorf-Fellhorn on Friday may indicate powder after recent snowfall but following a sunny and busy weekend when the locals hit the mountains en masse the ski conditions (at any resort) can deteriorate rapidly and late arrivals may see very different ski conditions Of course some people look for deteriorating conditions in the snow report for the likely development of mogul fields but for powder lovers and particularly snowboarders this can mean tracked out off-piste snow this doesn’t always happen quickly after fresh snowfall particularly at quiet North facing resorts at high altitude where genuine powder stashes may be found days or even weeks later It is worth checking the piste map for Oberstdorf-Fellhorn (found in menu above) for the location of favourable slopes that may be described in the "Oberstdorf-Fellhorn Snow Conditions" part of the snow report In addition to checking the Oberstdorf-Fellhorn snow report we recommend that you check the snow
