Chaz Offenburg is the new chief financial officer for the Town of Carrboro
Chaz Offenburg was named the new chief financial officer for the Town of Carrboro
Offenburg's appointment will become effective on Nov
Offenburg worked for Orange County for six years
most recently as a deputy chief financial officer
Offenburg said this role included working with the county CFO on payroll
financial systems and accounting.
According to a press release from the Town
Offenburg graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a master's degree in public administration.
Offenburg said he is from the area and went to elementary school in Carrboro
“I moved around some in my childhood and adulthood
the idea of giving back and representing my community and the role that I would be in,” Offenburg said.
Council member Jason Merrill said the CFO ensures budget priorities are met by allocating funds to key issues like affordable housing
transportation infrastructure and climate initiatives.
The CFO manages day-to-day financial operations
tracks spending and provides guidance on budget adjustments for the Town
“The CFO is kind of the top of the pyramid
just making sure everything goes where it should,” Merrill said.
said the CFO position is one of the most important positions in town government.
“The chief financial officer manages the resources and makes sure that our taxpayer dollars and all revenue sources that come into the Town are properly managed and allocated and spent according to our ordinances and legal processes to run this town,” Toney said.
Toney said it was essential to find someone who understands the unique processes and fiscal responsibilities of local government
particularly North Carolina's laws and management of taxpayer funds.
The soft skills to communicate complex financial data effectively to department heads and town council members were equally important
“A well rounded person is critical for a chief financial officer in local government,” Toney said.
Offenburg said transparency and participation are both very important to local government.
There are opportunities for public input at council meetings
including participatory budgeting that provides community members the possibilities of allocating funding towards certain projects
“The way I have always seen it is helping people help run their programs
which in turn helps people in the community,” Offenburg said.
The Town seeks a stable hand to maintain its sound financial management while supporting a range of council priorities
affordable housing and economic development
Offenburg also said he looks forward to collaborating with the Town's staff to meet community needs and goals.
“I know the [town] manager is in her first year
and she has a really good handle on the needs of the community and the needs that the board wants to focus on
so I'm looking forward to to moving in and learning more about that and being an asset to her and the council,” Offenburg said

abuseThe Offenburg University in Germany explored incidents of sexual harassment over voice chat
by Cass Marshall
two popular online multiplayer shooters from Riot Games and Blizzard Entertainment
The results showed that sexual harassment and abusive comments are still an unfortunately common part of online play experiences
with the authors suggesting a larger study should be carried out across a wider range of games
“Sexual Harassment in Valorant and Overwatch Voice Chats,” covers two studies — one that focused on both games
which shows subjects encounter a regular stream of both toxic
Both games have professional esports scenes
and both encourage players to climb a competitive ladder
The first study followed two female players
and transcribing the voice chats throughout each match
which puts her in approximately the top 37% of players skill-wise
The researchers saw several instances of general harassment over the 19 observed Overwatch matches
with no instances of sexual harassment during these matches
which places her in the top 33% of players
The researchers observed 9 Valorant matches in which both general and sexual harassment occurred
longer-term study followed four subjects over the course of 30 Valorant matches each
The study shows continual instances of sexual harassment encountered during online gaming
There were 82 cases of sexual harassment logged over 120 matches
Sexual comments and insults were found in 14.17% of matches
The subjects also encountered a regular stream of non-specific toxicity; 80.8% of 120 matches had profanity
and general verbal abuse occurred in 25.8% of matches
While sexual harassment is less common than general toxicity
it is consistent — about one in every seven Valorant matches included a teammate sexually harassing a subject over voice chat
Correction: This story previously omitted details about the results of each individual game’s results from the first study. It has been corrected to reflect the results for both Overwatch and Valorant.

A 37-year-old psychotherapist from Alsace dies after an attack in the Offenburg station district. The police investigate with a large contingent - and quickly make a find.
Grief and horror in Offenburg, Baden: a 37-year-old French woman is killed in the middle of the busy station district. The police set up a special task force. The victim of the suspected homicide was a commuter from the neighboring Strasbourg area and worked in Offenburg, according to a police spokesman.
According to initial investigations, the psychotherapist was on her way home early Tuesday evening when the attack occurred in a backyard in the immediate vicinity of the practice where she worked.
On Wednesday afternoon, the police provisionally arrested a possible suspect. He is a 42-year-old German man who was arrested by special forces in his apartment in Offenburg's Weststadt district. Whether the suspect is connected to the dead woman is now the subject of further investigations, the police announced.
A witness had found the seriously injured woman and called the police. Despite first aid, the 37-year-old died, the investigators reported. An autopsy should provide further information.
According to witnesses, the woman was seen lying in the area of the crime scene at around 6.30 pm. Forensics examined the victim's car in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene. The yard is located in a commercial and business district and can be seen from a thoroughfare. Next door is a popular shopping district.
For tactical reasons, no further details were initially given about the possible murder weapon. The spokesperson reported "serious violence" - which initially made it difficult to identify the woman. "We have clues and leads that we are following up," he said.
Offenburg's Lord Mayor Marco Steffens (CDU) said he was deeply shocked by the act of violence. "Such a horrific crime in our city leaves many stunned and saddened," said the mayor. The city has over 62,000 inhabitants.
One day after the crime, investigators were still present at the cordoned-off commercial area in the city center. They searched for traces and evidence.
Just a few meters away, people were shopping and hanging out in cafés and other bars. "Can I walk through here? What happened?" asked a passer-by, looking irritatedly at the barriers.
More than 60 officers are investigating in the "Ramp" special commission, according to the police. They are investigating in "all directions" - including the psychotherapist's patients, the spokesman said. Witnesses are still being sought. A seemingly insignificant observation could turn into a hot lead in retrospect, according to a statement. According to initial findings, an adult movie theater in the area had nothing to do with the crime, a spokesperson said.
Offenburg in the Ortenau district is located in the German-French border region - it is only around 20 kilometers to the border of the neighboring country. Many people commute to Germany from France every day. There is a direct train connection between the city in Baden and the Alsatian metropolis of Strasbourg. Many commuters also take the car.

GERMANY — Not since the early part of the last decade has North America dispatched a leader in World Cup mountain bike racing
Willow Koerber (Subaru-Gary Fisher) will take her place on the front line in round three of the UCI World Cup Mountain Bike Series in Offenburg
She earned the lead by placing second in the first two rounds while the world’s other elite cross-country racers posted scattered results
and compatriots Georgia Gould (Luna Pro Team); Katie Compton (Stevens/Planet Bike); and Canada’s Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team)
will each go to Offenburg with solid aspirations to finish on the podium
“All these women are also racing consistently well internationally
so competition is good,” Pendrel said
referring to the depth of talent in the women’s field
“I think you are seeing more women racing with the confidence they could win
There is no one great standout rider like Gunn Rita was
People used to race for second; now they dig deeper because a win is possible.”
The buzz around Koerber really started to hum following last year’s World Mountain Bike Championships in Canberra
The performance marked both a personal triumph for Koerber and a game-changer in women’s pro mountain biking
Koerber changed her mind about a few “minor” things
like who she was and how she wanted her life to turn out
Colorado where she met her current boyfriend
who has a rainbow jersey of a former world downhill champion (2000) hanging in his closet
Koerber admits to having a light side and a dark side
which eclipsed everything else much of the time
She credits Rockwell for helping her change her attitude about racing
“My results in the second half of last year were a direct result of this change in attitude,” Koerber said
and I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it
Someone who not only noticed but who made sure everyone else noticed was Koerber’s former RLX-Polo Ralph Lauren teammate and two-time Olympian
“Willow has evolved to be the racer she is because of hard work and dedication,” Dolzadelli said
“She is committed to the sport that saw her going through ups and downs
Willow is happy now,” Dolzadelli continued
she is more mature and has made a few changes to her training
but mostly all the years of racing and training are coming together to click at the right time.”
What it will take to win on Sunday will be superlative technical skills matched to superior fitness — and preferably a first- or second-row call-up to the start line
“Offenburg is always a huge race — tons of racers and spectators,” Georgia Gould said
“The course is challenging technically and physically and there is lots of single-track
A good start is crucial because you can lose lots of time getting stuck behind people in the single-track — trust me
Different this year in Offenburg will be the presence of big-wheeled bikes
29er loyalists earned a vote in their favor earlier this year when Germany’s sanctioning body for cycling
That means Koerber and Irmiger will be able to race on the bikes that they’ve each credited on various occasions for their recent successes
who will make her 2010 World Cup debut in Offenburg onboard German bike brand Stevens
will be racing a 26-inch bike this weekend
“They are building me a prototype 29er so I hope to have that one soon too
but I won’t have it for this weekend,” Compton said
“I like having the ability to choose the bike that works best for the course.”
current world champion Irina Kalentieva (Topeak/Ergon)
not only for her prowess but because she races for a German company and fans have claimed her as one of their own
especially now that she’s racing on a German-engineered bike
Absent from Sunday’s race will be Luna’s Katerina Nash
who will remain in North America to attend a product launch for Orbea
Racing in Offenburg for the elite women starts at 10:45 am (CET)

“The completion of the new facility lays the foundation for operating our first battery-powered train fleet in Germany that will provide climate-friendly
Our contract to provide the trains’ maintenance and repairs will ensure reliable and punctual regional rail service over the long term.”
Baden-Württemberg’s Transport Minister Winfried Hermann and SWEG CEOs Tobias Harms and Thilo Grabo signed the transport contract transferring the operation of Network 8 from the state to SWEG for 15 years as of December 2023
“This December we will inaugurate the battery-electric age for regional rail transport in Baden-Württemberg in Ortenau,” said Hermann
“With today’s signing of the contract
the state has given SWEG the responsibility of using this innovative technology to bring passengers safely and reliably to their destinations for another 15 years.”
In 2020, the Baden-Württemberg State Authority for Rail Vehicles (SFBW) ordered 27 two-car
120-seat Mireo Plus B battery-powered trainsets from Siemens Mobility
the trains can operate on electrified as well as non-electrified routes
the Mireo Plus B has a range of around 80km

COLUMBIANA — The votes keep coming in
and the city of Columbiana is currently ranked first in the nation in the Reader’s Digest one of the Nicest Places in America competition
The city became a finalist a few weeks ago and has soared to the top spot recently thanks to the efforts of a local theater company that reaches out to those with special needs
“We are very excited to be a part of Crown Theater’s success and their commitment to their special needs shows,” City Manager Lance Willard said
According to the Reader’s Digest article that can be found at www.rd.com
whose grandson participates in plays at the Main Street Theater
In order to be named Nicest Place in America
Columbiana must get enough votes from the public
Voting can be done by reading the Reader’s Digest article and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page
“I am honored that our program is getting some recognition
My folks that are in the program are just amazing people
It’s great to hear that people are recognizing that,” Erich Offenburg said of the nomination
Offenburg is artistic director for Crown Theater Productions
the non-profit theater company responsible for the schedule of live action plays offered at the Main Street Theater
The plays are performed by those with physical or mental disabilities
Offenburg and City Manager Lance Willard both credited Don Arthurs and his wife for undertaking the renovation of the Main Street Theater more than 10 years ago
Don Arthurs provided us great community service when they undertook a huge renovation of the Main Street Theater
They renovated it and made it available to Crown Theater Productions who offer a full schedule of plays each season,” Willard said
“Together the Arthurs’ and Crown Theater Productions help bring our community together and help make Columbiana such a great place.”
Offenburg said Crown Theater is thankful for the Arthurs’ work and for allowing the organization to utilize that space
“It’s a great opportunity for everybody in the community,” he said
He also credited the Columbiana Community Foundation
which provides major funding to the organization for its plays
and also the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce for its support
“There is such a wide group of people that pull this off in the community,” Offenburg said of the success of Crown Theater Productions and the Main Street Theater
He added that the organization is growing on a regular basis
with around 30 actors participating in shows
The cast is gearing up to perform Shrek this fall and are also planning a trip to a performing arts festival at Walt Disney World next year
“We are super excited about everything that is going on with the special needs program and the theater itself,” Offenburg said

2018 was an incredible year for Lorenzo Lupacchini
with the highlight undoubtedly being his gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ alongside Pas De Deux partner Silvia Stopazzini
As Lorenzo - who turned 23 on January 31 - looks ahead to going solo at this weekend FEI Vaulting World Cup™ in Germany
the Italian is ninth in the individual competition after a surprise win last time out in Salzburg in December - watch it in the video below
Lorenzo’s gold medal at WEG 2018 was a proud moment for the young Italian
He’s hoping for more of the same as in 2019
after going through a tough injury during the last FEI Vaulting World Cup™ season
The win in Tryon came just months after Lorenzo suffered a broken foot
which meant he and Silvia’s winter season was cut short
“My target for 2019 is to repeat the success of last season and improve my score - especially in the compulsory test,” Lorenzo told FEI.org
“I'm so happy with my performance in Salzburg
but I also know there is a lot of things to improve
I want to prepare a more challenging performance for 2019.”
the Women’s and Pas De Deux (PDD) World Champion in 2016
finished in silver medal position behind the Italians in the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Pas De Deux in Tryon last year
she became the first FEI world champion in the newly added discipline of PDD
It was also the first world title for Austria in Vaulting
because she’s really young and able to be competitive in PDD Squad and individual,” he said
“She gets top results in all aspects and I really like her style as she is soft on the horse.”
Lupacchini beat the likes of Lukas Heppler and Juan Martin Clavijo in Salzburg in December to grab first place in his only individual appearance in this year’s World Cup season so far
He wowed the judges with a charismatic and athletic performance based on Charlie Chaplin
Lorenzo is looking to remain calm and collected in his individual performance
“After that unexpected victory in Salzburg
I want to make a quiet competition without great stress and big goals,” he said
“I want make a fun freestyle and show everyone I'm able to perform like I do in training.”
As the FEI Vaulting World Cup™ season moves into full swing
this weekend will see Lorenzo tackle the individual Men’s competition
it is the Pas De Deux and Squad competitions that the Italian likes to direct his attention and training towards
Lupacchini and Stopazzini took gold in the FEI World Cup™ competition – which is what they will be aiming for again this season
“I never spend a lot of time focussing for the individual competition
because I'm always concentrating on PDD and Squad,” he said
He’s not so confident about his individual chances
While he will be competing alone this weekend in Offenburg
he doesn’t think his individual career has had many “great highlights.”
The intense level of work and commitment it takes to become a dentist and a gold medal vaulter leaves the Italian with a very limited amount of free time for other activities
“I haven’t got a lot free time because I’m also studying to became a dentist,” Lorenzo said

The German riders have been hard to beat on home soil this weekend
and it was no different at the CSI3* event in Offenburg
Sunday's 1.55 Grand Prix saw two home riders on top as Daniel Deusser won aboard Toulago (Toulon x Carthago) and Johannes Ehning finished second on Salvador V (Calvados x Voltaire).
Deusser has been in tremendous form at the event
On Friday he finished second with Toulago in the 1.50 Longines Ranking class
and on Saturday he won the 1.45 Longines Ranking class on the promising 9-year-old mare Comtesse van’t Ertsenhof Z (Calvaro Z x Ogano Sitte).
Today's jump-off counted thirteen of the 49 riders in the class
but only four managed to produce clear rounds against the clock
Fastest of those four was Deusser who stopped the clock on 34.09 to take home a brand new car as the first prize
A little over a second behind followed Ehning and the now 17-year-old Salvador V
Janika Sprunger secured the third place for Switzerland aboard another veteran
the 15-year-old Uptown Boy (Odermus R x Joost) with a time of 36.54
The last double clear of the day was delivered by Dutch rider Frank Schuttert and Go Easy de Muze (Vigo d'Arsouilles x For Pleasure)

The Kunstverein Offenburg is currently presenting a Stefan Marx exhibition
The German artist excels in puns and humorous art that reflect his joyful character
This new show explores further his dedication to letters
‘I Trust You Will Tell Me If I Make A Fool Of Myself’
‘Were You Drunk Or Not When You Said You Miss Me’
Here are some of the catching statements put forward by Marx’s pieces
On big scale canvas the white writings burst on the black background with firmness and playfulness
or lines regulate the text that crosses the works in a perfect disorderliness
made aimlessly over journeys accompany the vast paintings
There are hundred of faces that discover universal diversity
Marx’s portraits are united by their humorous stroke and accidental papers

Columbiana is typical of a lot of small cities in Ohio
It has a downtown in which nearly every storefront is owned and operated by local businesses
The only exception is a Subway sandwich shop
A diversified manufacturing base makes up a good deal of the city’s workforce
Columbiana has several small to midsized businesses
City leaders are seeking ways to attract diversity
and City Manager Lance Willard at the Main Street Theater
He said the city continues to push for more events in its downtown that draw people from beyond the region
you will create a culture that attracts everyone,’’ Willard said
Columbiana’s unemployment rate hovers at 4 percent
which is lower than the rest of the region
a contrast to 40 years ago when the region’s steel and autoworkers backed Democrats
gave Donald Trump nearly 70 percent of its vote
The Plain Dealer reported Youngstown was the murder capital of the country
Columbiana is about 20 miles from Youngstown
Tom Yoder serves up food and conversation at Heck's Restaurant in Columbiana
“Things don’t build up here,’’ said Tom Yoder
which serves up a full menu and the happenings of the city on a daily basis
but you don’t have that divisiveness here.’’
Some of the generosity in Columbiana extends beyond its residents to its government
City Council unanimously approved one of the largest incentive packages in Ohio: It granted a 100 percent
15-year tax abatement for new home construction
That means if a person builds a $300,000 house
he or she does not have to pay real estate taxes on the home for 15 years
“No questions asked,’’ said Mayor Bryan Blakeman
He said the move is an attempt to draw and keep residents
The city also has been negotiating with businesses
offering tax abatements through deals on a case-by-case basis
as it also receives a 1 percent city income tax that is earmarked for education
The Firestone Memorial at Columbiana Cemetery
where tire magnate Harvey Firestone and his family are buried
one of Columbiana's best-known attractions
residents have worked to keep people in Columbiana
Tingle has donated more than $1.5 million to renovate and update Firestone Park
was part of tire magnate Harvey Firestone’s family farm
the Columbiana High School Clippers’ football stadium
a swimming pool and acres of grass and walking paths — is among the city’s biggest draws
They left when her husband worked as an executive at UPS and she worked as a high school principal and later a college professor
They moved back to Columbiana from Atlanta
“I wanted to do something to remember them,’’ Tingle
I still go to football games there on Friday nights in the fall.’’
She initially donated $500,000 to renovate the landscape around a pond at the park
Three pillars were built to remember the friendship of industrialists Firestone
who often spent time together at Firestone’s farm
Mary Wilson plans to go to the Main Street Theater to watch her grandson
perform in "Shrek." Wilson nominated Columbiana as Reader's Digest's Nicest Place in America
She will add $1 million more to re-landscape the park and update some of the historic details in it
“My husband and I loved Columbiana,’’ she said
Clayton Kerrigan will march on stage at the Main Street Theater and play a dwarf in Offenburg’s production of “Shrek.”
“It has been nothing but amazing,’’ he said of the recognition
is now a shopping and residential destination in Columbiana
announces Columbiana as the magazine's Nicest Place in America earlier this month

Light and Shadow is the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Dr
Tracing their photographs from 1920 to 1950
the book explores Wolff and Tritschler’s roles as pioneers of the Leica
as forerunners of illustrative photography
and as creators of an extensive archive of work that documents several chapters of German history
Wolff and Tritschler are known for photographing the years of the Weimar Republic – Germany’s government from 1919 to 1933 – through to the rise of Nazi Germany
and in the devastation of the Second World War
their work has established them as the two most significant photographers of this period in German history
Light and Shadow features 1,000 of their photographs shot during this time
Although now considered pioneers of the artform
the pair did not approach photography in a way that was typical of the time
Wolff formally studied medicine and became a physician in Strasbourg
but when his practice was restricted by the French controlling the area after the first world war he turned to photography
and established the publishing firm Wolff & Tritschler with Alfred Tritschler
he won a Leica camera at the Frankfurt Photography Exhibition
which he then used to illustrate several books with Tritschler
each popularizing new techniques using the small-format camera
draws on the contradictions that characterizes the pair’s work
Among them are snapshots of the 1936 Olympics
a colour photograph of the after effects of the war
the book acknowledges Wolff and Tritscher as businessmen and their extensive artistic skill
Dr Paul Wolff & Tritschler: Light and Shadow – Photographs 1920 to 1950 is published by Kehrer Verlag
alongside an exhibition of the work at Ernst Leitz Museum
EXPERT OPINION BY MINDA ZETLIN, AUTHOR OF 'CAREER SELF-CARE: FIND YOUR HAPPINESS, SUCCESS, AND FULFILLMENT AT WORK' @MINDAZETLIN
But unless your audience reaches into the tens of millions every month
That sobering truth is the result of elaborate research by Mathias Bärtl
professor at Offenburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany
Bärtl and his team worked hard to come up with a random sample of YouTube channels and calculate how many viewers (and thus how much ad revenue) each might receive
The platform doesn’t reveal its formula for calculating ad revenue
which can vary according to several factors
such as which country viewers are watching from
But they’re still depressing enough to convince any sensible person hoping for a career as a YouTube star to start looking for a Plan B
Income inequality is a huge problem in society at large, but it may be even bigger among YouTube partners (as the company calls its content creators who meet the criteria to receive ad revenue)
the top 3 percent of channels got 90 percent of the viewership
which means that 90 percent of YouTube creators are fighting over the remaining 10 percent
the top 3 percent got 86 percent of the views
To get into that rarified top 3 percent of Bärtl’s sample
you would have to have more than 1.4 million views per month
Maybe you think you can make it to that level–you’ll be posting really great content every day and sharing it with your large social media following
your average payment from YouTube will amount to less than $17,000 a year
That’s based on an estimate of $1 per 1,000 views
according to those familiar with YouTube’s partner and advertising programs
The company doesn’t release its payment formula
but insiders say it can range from a low of $0.25 per 1,000 views to a high of $5 per 1,000 views
Even the total number of YouTube partners who qualify for ad revenue isn’t published by Google
But just to give you a sense of how many creators are out there for you to compete with
the company does say that YouTubers upload 400 hours of video every minute
and for YouTubers who do rake in the big bucks
sponsored posts are an important part of the mix
But before you can really cash in on sponsorships
you need to build up a very large subscriber base
Subscribers are obviously a lot harder to get than views
influencers with at least 100,000 subscribers on YouTube can get an average of $12,500 for a sponsored post
with payments going up rapidly if you have one million subscribers or more
But those figures refer to endorsements by people who are celebrities in their own right
Someone who’s only well known on YouTube might not command that kind of pay
You’re old enough and wise enough not to plan on a glorious future as a YouTube star
you might want to start gently making them aware of YouTube’s economic realities
1 in 3 children aged 7 to 16 said they hoped to be a full-time YouTuber when they grew up
Only a third as many said they wanted to be a doctor or nurse

Innovative technology along with even more climate protection and greater comfort and convenience for passengers – regional rail transport on Network 8 (“Ortenau”) is rising to a new level on April 8
Today’s the day the first four battery-powered trains from Siemens Mobility begin regular service
The official start was celebrated by an exclusive inaugural trip from Offenburg to Oberkirch and back
Minister of Transport for the state of Baden-Württemberg
“We are writing a new chapter in railway history with this opening trip,” commented Minister Hermann
“Thanks to the battery hybrid drive of the Mireo Plus B
trains operating in the Ortenau region as of today are more climate-friendly than those using diesel
Baden-Württemberg is a pioneer with innovative train technology
climate-friendly solutions wherever there are still no overhead power lines.”
SWEG CEO Tobias Harms said: “SWEG not only stands for quality
We are especially pleased to now be able to make these innovative trains available to our passengers and will be demonstrating our role as a reliable partner to both the state of Baden-Württemberg and Siemens Mobility.”
said: “We are proud that our first fleet of Mireo Plus B battery trains is now going into passenger service
We would like to thank the state of Baden-Württemberg and SWEG for their trust and confidence in our innovative and environmentally friendly technology
we can make an active contribution to climate protection
The introduction of these highly advanced trains
which can operate up to 120 kilometers on battery power
marks an important step towards a sustainable future.”
The hybrid trains will initially be used on the routes from Offenburg to Bad Griesbach and from Offenburg to Hornberg
They replace the diesel-powered Regio Shuttle RS1
Plans call for gradually extending hybrid service on other routes in the network
In preparation for introducing the Siemens Mobility trains
the network timetable was adjusted in mid-December 2023
have been running straight through from Offenburg via Hausach to Hornberg without requiring changes
And passengers traveling to Freudenstadt usually have to change trains in Hausach
since the battery trains can serve the Freudenstadt station on the regular schedule only when an additional switch connection has been installed there
As a result of the timetable change in December 2023
passenger service has been improved by closing previous gaps in the schedule
Trains now operate at least on an hourly basis on all routes from early morning to evening
we are increasing the service frequency and providing higher capacity
Passengers now have more comfortable and attractive options for changing trains and boarding – whether in the cities or country,” noted Minister of Transport Hermann
Innovative train: the Siemens Mireo Plus B
the Mireo Plus B battery-electric multiple-unit trains produce no emissions and are extremely quiet
they can be used on routes with and without overhead power lines
when they operate throughout the entire network and replace the diesel-powered Regio Shuttle
they will slash consumption of diesel by around 1.8 million liters per year
In battery operation and under real conditions
the Mireo Plus B has a range of up to 120 kilometers
Its batteries can be recharged from the overhead line and with braking energy
includes two battery containers holding lithium-ion batteries with a long service life
The trainsets have 120 seats and are equipped with a toilet
air conditioning and spacious special use areas
Manufacturer Siemens Mobility won Baden-Württemberg’s open-technology call for tenders for Network 8 with its Mireo Plus B design
This led to Baden-Württemberg’s State Agency for Rail Vehicles (SFBW) ordering 27 Mireo Plus B two-car
The trains will be serviced and maintained by Siemens Mobility for SWEG for about 30 years in the newly built rail maintenance depot in Offenburg that opened in June 2023
predictive maintenance of the trains is made possible by the use of the cloud-based Siemens Mobility Railigent X Suite application
Thanks to advanced algorithms and data analytics
train operations are optimised and potential disruptions are detected and handled before they lead to breakdowns
This ensures 100 percent availability of the fleet
The charging infrastructure for the new trains was installed by SWEG Schienenwege GmbH at the Achern and Biberach (Baden) train stations
Following the timetable change made in mid-December 2023
Network 8 (“Ortenau”) includes the following routes: Offenburg – Hornberg/Freudenstadt; Offenburg – Bad Griesbach; Offenburg – Achern – Ottenhöfen; and Biberach (Baden) – Oberharmersbach-Riersbach
the reactivated Hermann Hesse line between Calw and Renningen is planned to become part of the network as of 2025
Network 8 handles around two-and-a-half million train kilometers per year
The state of Baden-Württemberg awarded operation of the network to SWEG until December 2038

a few Burda dogs introduce themselves in person
I’m about 4 years old and come from the streets of Romania – I was really lucky that my colleague Rebecca found me online when she was looking for a new office dog (there was another before me
but I definitely have a lot in common with Cretan hounds
and I can run as fast as them when I go to the park
But I also have a lot of respect for the black and white cat that’s always loitering by the stream and likes to frighten me
Where does your owner work and what is her name
My owner, Sandra Georgi, works for Adtech Factory in Offenburg, where she looks after countertrade. I long for the day when Hund im Glück (Lucky Dog) has its own countertrade and my buddy Barth and I can get treats from the editorial team
I’ll lie patiently on my blanket next to the desk and watch everything that goes on in the open-plan office
entertain the staff and help them manage their work/life balance
How often do you come to the office and what does a typical day look like
my owner and I walk to the office through the park; we live up on the hill and always walk to work
When I pass the Burda Bambini kindergarten
I’m always pleased to see my colleague Gernot and his son
When I arrive I get a treat from Heike and later on I get something from Regina
If my owner goes into a meeting without me
I usually get a bit upset and even a treat doesn’t make me feel better
When the rest of the team return from lunch
I know that my owner and I are about to go out
Regina usually gives me another treat and then I lay down on my blanket for an afternoon nap
In the afternoon I usually get to see my master
who also works at Adtech Factory up on the third floor
My colleague Rebecca takes me up there if my owner is busy
What is your favourite spot at Adtech Factory
but I love to be with the scheduling team on the third floor and with my owner at her desk
Pretty much everyone comes by to stroke me
there’s no stopping me – I know that she’ll always give me some
Elena really respects dogs – you could say I’m the office therapist
the occasional bit of natural yoghurt and plenty of treats
My colleague Dirk sometimes spoils me with a bit of liquorice
although my owner curses him for it (if she finds out)
Who is your favourite person in the office and why
Obviously the ladies in my team are top of the list
but Adtech Factory has a great atmosphere and I like the whole pack
very sick and everyone kept their fingers crossed for me and came to visit when I was feeling bad after my weekly chemotherapy – I’ll never forget that
Are there any other office dogs beside you
sometimes comes to Offenburg with his owner Nadine
but they actually work at the Adtech Factory office in Munich
He’s very attentive and cleans my ears and tummy
but he can easily keep up with me in the park at lunchtime – that’s really fun
Once I was in the park with Nadine and Balou and I walked back to the Medienpark all by myself
Everyone was agitated and cursing; I still don’t understand why
a beagle who works in Munich with his owner Frank and sometimes comes to Offenburg
He sweeps the office floor with his nose like a vacuum cleaner
Bubbly Renzo also visits the Medienpark now and again with his owner
Truth be told - What mischief have you ever done in the office
I’d been here about two weeks when I had the crazy idea to chew the cable on Rebecca’s mouse
Everyone was very upset and I was really ashamed of myself – luckily
I’m so cute that nobody can stay mad at me for long
What do you look forward to the most after work
We usually have errands to run in the city and bump into lots of two- and four-legged friends
I look forward to going home with my owner
and we’ll spend the evening together in the open-plan kitchen or – if my master and owner let me – I’ll get up on the sofa on my blanket to watch Netflix with them

Burda’s office dogs are also mostly working from home

Today we are introducing the Dachshund/Spaniel power couple Emily & Enno from Munich
Mrs Burda embodied the West German ‘"Wirtschaftswunder"
I was born this way.“ This is the Aenne Burda quote from 1994 with which the new book “Aenne Burda – Kindheit und Jugend in Offenburg“ begins
And this attitude in life was the basis for her subsequent success as the mother of today’s company Hubert Burda Media
The German TV channel Das Erste showed the first part of the two-part feature film "Aenne Burda – Die Wirtschaftswunderfrau“ on 9 December at 8.15 pm
The daughter of a railroader from Offenburg had a clear goal in mind
She was like a train that cannot be stopped but wants to go out into the world
Driven and spurred on by an iron will and a burning ambition
Growing up as a railroader’s daughter from Gaswerkstraße in Offenburg
Aenne Burda strove for greater things even when she was a child
who was six years older – he was her ticket out of the coal-dusted railroad world
With him she had made her way into high society
Franz Burda only owned a small printing company
The purchase of a gravure printing press was his breakthrough
With women he was just as successful as was he was as an entrepreneur
Despite his happy family life and the three sons he had with Aenne
the publisher had a second relationship with another woman
But that was not all: He financed a fashion magazine – “Elfi Moden” – for his mistress
exactly the kind of magazine his wife wanted to create
she challenged her competitor and was given the debt-ridden publishing company with 48 members of staff in 1949
she was no longer merely the “senator’s” wife
but Aenne Burda: independent and visionary
What was special about her was that she consistently made her dreams come true
spontaneous and stood up for her decisions
The price she was willing to pay was ten to twelve hours at the office every day
she mostly only saw her family for breakfast or on the weekend
Aenne Burda fulfilled her desire for independence and freedom at a time in which emancipation was still unheard of
Aenne wrote in one of her columns later on
that’s what it comes down to.” She appreciated women who roll up their sleeves and work for their independence and self-reliance
in which girls and women were only beginning to pursue a career
Later on she said: “I am a typical example of a time when everything changed.”
Aenne created her own recipe for success: a mix of wearable do-it-yourself fashion
“I’m a practical woman through and through and I knew what women need”
little ready-to-wear clothing was available
While sewing patterns had existed since the 19th Century
printed them at the senator’s printing company
she had the women in Offenburg measured to be able to determine the actual sizes
the cuts kept being adapted to the average German woman’s body
The first issue of the magazine that she called "Burda Moden“ was published in 1950
weil sie nach Burda Moden nähte“ (“Kate has a husband now
because she used Burda Moden to sew“) was the advertising slogan of the early years from 1950 onwards
Aenne had a mission: She wanted to make women more beautiful
everyone was able to make and wear fashionable
stylish clothes inspired by Paris fashion shows
Aenne had her finger on the pulse – money for fashion and beauty was tight
and the sewing magazine made the dreams of millions of women come true
She made fashion more democratic across the globe and affordable for everyone
The business woman set the course for the future with a lot of business sense
self-assertion and a rather forceful leadership style
“I wanted to achieve what I wanted.” There was no stopping her
fought for her place in the world of international fashion
where observed the shows – looking graceful
The ambitious business woman also bought competitors’ magazines: "Ihre Mode“ (1950)
the circulation of “Burda Moden” amounted to half a million copies
As the company needed more space due to increasing success
Aenne Burda had the new Offenburg publishing building built
The company’s own photo studio followed in 1962
Special editions on knitting and crocheting
traditional fashion and Christmas crafting also sold like hot cakes
But Aenne was still hungry for expansion and created a Burda test kitchen: In 1970
was published – it was sold 1.5 million times
The print run of “Burda Moden” reached two million copies for the first time in 1973
the magazine was translated into 18 languages and sold in 112 countries
International connection: special ambassador for fashion
wrote the German magazine “Der Spiegel” in retrospect in an article aobut the “Denver Clan of Offenburg” in 1987
The boss of the biggest fashion publisher in the world owed this triumph not least to the persistence of her managers
a Soviet government delegation had visited her Offenburg publishing headquarters to gain information about modern printing machines
Gorbachev’s envoys were also interested in the bestseller “Burda Moden”
The ladies’ world of Eastern Europe considered the pattern magazine one of the hottest articles to be bought for absurd prices on the black market
Aenne achieved her biggest entrepreneurial triumph as the “queen of clothes”: “Burda Moden” was the first western magazine that was published in the Soviet Union
“Do it yourself” as a basic socialist idea..
It was not Russia’s top politicians but their wives who gathered in the Pillar Hall of Moscow’s House of the Unions on a spring day in 1987
almost burst with pride when she had the world of Moscow at her feet
the fashion publisher said delightedly about the event
which she describes as the highlight of her life as an entrepreneur in her memoirs
A fashion show for the class enemy – this was a genuine cultural revolution
Glasnost meets goodie bag: “Fashion knows no bounds” was printed on the glossy Burda-blue bags
filled with the first Soviet edition of “Burda Moden” and beauty products for the guests to take home with them
watched the broadcast of the first western fashion show on television at home
observing how German models paraded down the catwalk in cutting-edge western fashion
Alongside clowns from Moscow’s State Circus and dancers from the neighboring Bolshoi Theatre
The celebrated highlight was bridal fashion to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture
our women are able to make their beautiful dresses themselves.” And the sewing patterns effectively became a map on which cultural and political boundaries could be overcome
Aenne Burda signed a contract for a printing and publishing company using modern offset printers in Moscow
the entrepreneur from the Southern German Baden region secured the exclusive right to acquire advertisements in the whole world
Burda became an “eye of a needle for the Soviet Union”
Western advertisers reached millions of Soviet citizens
And the USSR’s Central Television broadcast the popular TV show “Burda Moden recommends” every two weeks from the central consulting center of Burda Moden Russia
the “Burda Moden” logo in brass letters still adorns the entrance of the former temple of fashion
expressed his appreciation for this achievement in the times of perestroika: “In her own way and with her own means
Aenne Burda pulled the iron curtain to the side a bit.” And he praised the “queen of clothes” as a “special ambassador”: “You’ve achieved more than three ambassadors before you.” No man had achieved what she had managed as a woman
Aenne Burda was welcomed in Russia like “an envoy from a great power”
once said about the “queen of clothes”: “What the senator did was all well and good
but without Aenne all of this wouldn’t have existed
Aenne Burda was the mother of the publishing company
And she took the Offenburg success out into the wider world
Burda Eastern Europe published 135 magazines in nine Eastern European countries
Burda had the same status in Russia as Coca-Cola”
then director of Burda Eastern Europe Publishing Group
when “Burda Moden” was even published in China
Aenne’s fashion publishing house was integrated in the family-owned Burda company led by her youngest son Hubert
her publishing company had a turnover of 172 million DM
Aenne Burda withdrew completely from business
Zara and H&M – in 17 languages and more than 100 countries
Aenne Burda’s contribution to today’s company
was fundamental and made the previously small Offenburg publishing company known throughout the world
Part 2 of the TV feature film "Aenne Burda – Die Wirtschaftswunderfrau“ and the following documentary about the "real“ Aenne Burda was shown on Das Erste on 12 December at 8:15 pm. You can watch both parts of the German film and the making-of in Das Erste Mediathek.
To give traumatised children comfort and hope again, the sewing and handicrafts brand Burda Style, in cooperation with the Tribute to Bambi Foundation, is launching the campaign "Made with Love".
Last sunny Saturday, Burda Russia celebrated the summer city festival Burda Fest 2016 at the Museon park in Moscow. For the third time, Burda Russia turned the park into a real entertainment town.
With immediate effect, Susanne Müller and Carsten Sander join the management of BCN, the joint venture between Burda, Funke and Klambt. Tobias Conrad is the spokesperson for the new management team.

Perfect record intact despite challenges from Kulhavy and Marotte
Absalon came into Offenburg with two second places for the season in the World Cup, but he had stated earlier that he was building for this race, which he calls "the best World Cup course in the world".
A group of 12 riders formed at the front of the race on the first lap of seven, and rode away from the rest of the field along with Absalon, Kulhavy and Marotte, Burry Stander (Specialized), Christoph Sauser (Specialized), world champion Jose Hermida (Multivan Merida), Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower), Marco Fontana (Cannondale), Thomas Litscher (Felt Oetztal X-Bionic), Nicolas Coloma (Wildwolf-Trek), Rudi van Houts and Ivan Alvarez Gutierrez (Giant Italia).
By lap three, Coloma, Alvarez Gutierrez and van Houts were gone, and then Hermida flatted. Sauser crashed while chasing Absalon and Kulhavy and later suffered a broken wheel afte getting a flat and riding his rim. Both had to run to the next tech zone on lap four.
Absalon launched his attack on the same lap, exploding the group. Kulhavy took off in solo pursuit, but couldn't close the gap, followed by Marotte just in front of Stander. They would finish in that order, with Coloma jumping back into the final podium spot after posting the fastest split for the sixth lap.
"I tried first to attack on the first lap," said Absalon, "but I saw six guys on my wheel, so I said, 'ok, I need to wait a little'. I sat in for two laps on wheels and I saw Kulhavy was very strong. I knew I needed to attack in the beginning of a long climb, like I have done each year, and so I did the same."
"In the third and fourth lap, I was waiting on the downhill and I attacked just at the first feed zone and I did the long climb at the front. After I took 15 sec on Kulhavy, I felt good. I made no mistakes. To win a World Cup you need to do a perfect race because the gaps are small. I planned the beginning of my season to peak for this race because I like it so much and it is only two hours from my home." He was greeted with hugs and kisses from his wife and baby.
Kulhavy was not surprised at Absalon's strong showing, saying, "Julien was way strong today and I did what I could to race for the finish. I knew Julien would be strong here and in fact, he was."
Absalon's win moved him 40 points ahead of Kulhavy for the lead in the World Cup, but he has stated that he will not attend the two North American race (Mont Ste. Anne), so he will lose the lead in the next round.

At 5.15 pm they were ready to go: More than 400 sports enthusiasts gathered on the lawn in front of Burda Sportclub in Offenburg to warm up together on Thursday 19 July. Warming-up was not exactly necessary, however: The muscles were already well supplied with blood at 30 degrees Celsius in the shade.
This year’s version of Burda’s classic “Burda runs” started underneath blue skies in brilliant sunshine. Along the track, a great number of colleagues, friends and family members cheered on the runners, who either went on a 5-kilometer running track or a Nordic walking trail.
The “scarifiers” from the editorial team of Mein schöner Garten won the challenge cup for the best team result for the third time in a row. Andi Hupertz from Hitradio Ohr hosted the award ceremony and presented the winners with their trophies together with Milo Skupin-Alfa. Milo Skupin-Alfa is a member of the athletics club LG Offenburg and has recently won the bronze medal in the 400-meter relay at the U20 world championship in Finland.
After their run, the athletes cooled down by taking a well-deserved shower and having a cold drink or some ice cream. While the young guests had fun with the bouncer castle or the play bus, the adults enjoyed delicious snacks from various food trucks while sitting in the shade in the party tent and listening to the live music of the duo “Constant Motion”.
“I’m pleased that so many colleagues have made it here today, on the hottest day of the year so far. ‘Burda runs’ is a great event every year and a token of the company’s appreciation for its members of staff.“

The asphalt was steaming under the scorching sun of Southern Germany on Thursday, but the common goal motivated the Burda runners: to be active, have fun and collect donations for Offenburg's disabled sports group.
Back to the… 1950s: Offenburg dressed up on 20 November 2018 for a tribute to Aenne Burda. The occasion was the big premiere of the two-part TV feature film “Aenne Burda – Die Wirtschaftswunderfrau“.
True responsibility goes beyond individual success—it’s about driving meaningful change in society. This team embodies the essence of journalistic responsibility, and for that, they were honored with the BurdaAward.

Great service and great coffee often go hand-in-hand and I enjoyed not only wonderful coffee but great conversation at Arnolds Kaffeemanufaktur in Offenburg, Germany.
We were driving from the Basel area to Stuttgart and I knew I’d need some coffee along the way. We decided to stop in Offenburg because Arnolds (they don’t use an apostrophe in German) looked nice. We pulled off A5 and headed into town, where we found Arnolds on a quiet street.
The two guys working were so friendly…I think they were genuinely impressed when I explained that I always seek out independent coffee when I travel and could not have been friendlier in whipping up to “Kinder cappuccinos” for my kids.
I had a cappuccino, Heidi had a regular coffee, and my mother-in-law had iced coffee. We also got a cookie for each kid (choosing among the baked goods was not easy).
Germany may not have as many Starbucks / Dunkin / Coffee Bean / Dutch Bros type places
and gas station has automatic machines that dispense even worse coffee
Finding an independent shop with high-quality beans and a good machine is always worth the effort
I greatly appreciated the coffee and conversation
