Queen Margrethe II of Denmark represented a milestone in the country’s life from a very early age and in more ways than one.  First of all, she was the first woman to become Queen since the change of the succession law that allowed her to become the heir presumptive, pushing back her uncle, Prince Knud.  But she was also the first monarch in Danish history to renounce all titles upon ascending to the throne. Her predecessors had a long list of titles, while she gave them all up, except for the title of “Queen of Denmark.” So what could her titles have been? We have to take a close look at the preceding sovereigns to get an idea.  Her father, King Christian X, was styled as King of Denmark, Iceland, the Wends and the Goths, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, Dithmarschen, Lauenburg and Oldenburg until 1944 when the Dano-Icelandic union was dissolved, and he had to give up his title as King of Iceland.  Iceland is now its own independent country. But what about the other territories mentioned in the list?  “The Wends and the Goths” is actually a reference to two groups of people from medieval history; the Wends occupied a territory that corresponds to Mecklenburg, Holstein and Pomerania, on the southern coast of the Baltic sea. The title of King of the Wends was used for centuries by both the Danish and the Swedish monarchs until the ascensions of both Queen Margrethe and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, who both renounced all of their titles except the ones tied to their own respective nations.  Duke of Schleswig refers to a territory located in modern-day southern Jutland, a territory that celebrated in 2021 its 100th anniversary of the annexation to Denmark. It was one of the first peaceful transitions of territory from one nation to the next, with the domain being contended for centuries before between Denmark and Germany.  The title of “Duke of Holstein” has an interesting historical twist in the 1720s, when, following a defeat of the Duchy by the Danes, the Duke, who was married to the Emperor’s daughter, fled to Russia for some time. This generated a multitude of claims to this title, which is today believed to belong to Prince Dimitri Pavlovich Romanovsky-Ilyinsky, a descendent of the Russian royals.  The Duchy of Holstein originated in 1474 when King Christian I of Denmark had the county elevated to a Duchy by Emperor Frederick III. It ceased to exist as a Duchy after its annexation to the Prussian empire in 1866, but the monarchs of Denmark kept using the title until 1972.  The title of Duke of Dihmarschen entered the Danish Royal Family in the 1550s when the three heads of the territories that conquered the Duchy divided it into three parts after their combined efforts finally subdued the local forces; the territory was reunited under Denmark in 1864.  Lauenburg is the title that is associated with the King of Denmark that has with the country the shortest history of domination, as the Duchy of Lauenburg was under Danish domain only from 1815 to 1864 when the Prussian Empire conquered it. Nevertheless, it remained part of the titles that the Danish sovereigns chose to keep.  But it is the Duchy of Oldenburg that has the most recognisable name for any Danish royal historian. The Oldenburg branch of the family reigned in Denmark from 1448 until 1818, when the Glucksburg branch took over. It is the same branch currently in power as Queen Margrethe descends from them.  So these are all the titles from her father that Queen Margrethe decided to renounce when she was proclaimed monarch.  But of course, her full style is “By grace of God, Queen of Denmark.” The Kingdom of Denmark includes what is sometimes referred to as “proper Denmark” and two autonomous territories: the Faroe Islands and Greenland, both of which have independent parliaments, and where the Queen is only a symbolic figure.  23 Feb 2025 13:00:00 GMT?.css-1txiau5-AnswerContainer{color:var(--GlobalColorScheme-Text-secondaryText2);}Eintracht Norderstedt won 4–2 over Holstein Kiel II on Sun The current head to head record for the teams are Eintracht Norderstedt 3 win(s) Have scored 3 goals in their last 5 matches Holstein Kiel II haven't lost to Eintracht Norderstedt in their last 7 meetings (5W Who won between Eintracht Norderstedt and Holstein Kiel II on Sun 23 Feb 2025 13:00:00 GMT?Eintracht Norderstedt won 4–2 over Holstein Kiel II on Sun 23 Feb 2025 13:00:00 GMT.InsightsHave scored 5 goals in their last 5 matches Eintracht Norderstedt is playing home against Holstein Kiel II on Sun Sara Jagiolla/Kiel UniversityThe pot was unearthed at the Neolithic settlement Oldenburg LA 77 in Ostholstein Archaeologists in Germany have uncovered a Stone Age cooking pot flecked with remains of 5,000-year-old porridge and emmer wheat that had been sprouted to bring out its distinctly sweet and nutty flavor the cook mistakenly left it over the fire for too long after burning the porridge and scorching the pot the cook may have just broken the clay vessel rather than try to clean it Learn more about this incredible find here Mary’s CommissionThe metal tasset is just the latest incredible discovery at Historic St When colonists came to the New World hundreds of years ago they brought supplies to help them survive — including weapons of war like metal suits of armor excavations at a 17th-century colonial fort in Maryland have unearthed one such piece of body armor Mary’s City late last year is a remarkable discovery but it’s just the latest fascinating object to be unearthed at the fort Dig deeper in this report al/Antiquity Publications Researchers examine the bronze amulet which bears mysterious Vasconic inscriptions researchers were excavating an ancient settlement in Spain’s Navarre region when they discovered a bronze amulet shaped like a hand they believe it bears the oldest known inscription written in a Vasconic language an ancient language group spoken primarily by the pre-Roman Vascones people near the Pyrenees mountains Examples of the language group are scarce — only a few inscriptions on ancient coins and altar stones have ever been found Read on here. the Senate of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) gave the green light for the establishment of two new institutes These will conduct research on innovative technologies for the mobility and energy transition the Budget Committee of the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) approved and released the necessary funds to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie BMWi) for the creation of the new DLR institutes The BMWi is providing a more than 22 million euro per year and the states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein are contributing another two million euro annually "We are delighted to welcome you to the DLR family These new institutes are further proof of the confidence that the federal and state governments have in DLR's cutting-edge research," said Pascale Ehrenfreund "Scientific competence and research on current socially and economically important issues form the basis for enhancing Germany as a location for science and business we will strengthen our activities in the highly relevant fields of maritime energy systems and future mobility." In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from shipping and thus achieve greater sustainability in maritime transport, the DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems is being established in Geesthacht southeast of Hamburg in Schleswig-Holstein It is the first DLR institute in Schleswig-Holstein The entire energy conversion chain is considered there – from port infrastructure to on-board fuel storage and the effective provision of energy for ships The focus will be on the provision of electricity as well as heating and cooling systems for cargo and passenger ships The use of alternative fuels and the integration of technologies such as fuel-cell systems will play an important role in this context the researchers will examine synergies in port operations and the energy supply infrastructure on land The goal is to develop integrated systems for efficient and low-emission energy supply for ships of various sizes tested and qualified using a research vessel under realistic conditions This will significantly reduce overall emissions from maritime applications and shape the energy supply paths of the future In Lower Saxony, the DLR Institute of Systems Engineering for Future Mobility is being created from a spin-off of the transport research area at the OFFIS Institute for Information Technology part of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg The institute time The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany “We’re extremely pleased with the way our business has developed in the first six months of this year,” says Eva van Pelt “The growth we achieved stems primarily from the sharp rise in demand for products from our Liquid Handling which are needed both in the area of diagnostics – to perform coronavirus tests for example – and in the development of vaccines and drugs.” The Eppendorf Group’s business performance in the first two quarters of 2020 was directly affected by the coronavirus-related restrictions on business in the individual countries the closure of research facilities and universities and the global lockdowns These factors also had an impact on the supply situation at Eppendorf’s production sites  “In the early months of this year which were affected most severely by the pandemic we reacted promptly and ensured that we could maintain our global material availability,” explains Dr we implemented a highly detailed process to permanently monitor the supply chains and evaluate the suppliers’ ability to deliver ensuring that our production was up and running at all times and that our products were available for use in the fight against the coronavirus.” Eppendorf is significantly expanding the production capacity at its facility in Oldenburg in Holstein This is where the company produces high-quality consumables for laboratories and research institutes around the world Through the construction of two additional production halls Eppendorf will increase its total capacity there by around 30% as of 2021 The first hall has already been in operation since May while production in the second hall is scheduled to start in September Since it is impossible to predict how the global economy will develop in the coming months no reliable statement can be made on the further course of the financial year the Management Board believes that the strong demand seen to date will persist until the end of this year and that the product groups that are currently the focus of attention will continue to attract great interest Against this backdrop and given the positive development in the first half of the year the Group anticipates that its revenue and profit will be on par with the previous year assuming that the exchange rates remain relatively stable these figures stood at €803.9 million (revenue) and €144.2 million (EBIT) 27 Apr 2025 12:00:00 €335.6 million) This positive development corresponds to an organic increase in sales of 12.8% (8.8% in local currencies) All of the company’s market regions contributed to this very good development but sales growth of around 20% in China and 15% in North America was particularly remarkable.  Owing to extensive and continuous investments income from operations (EBIT) declined slightly during the first half of the year to €66.7 million compared with last year (prior year: €67.3 million) amounting to an EBIT margin of 17.6% (prior year: 20.0%).  “Eppendorf profited from a generally good market environment during the first half of 2019,” explained Thomas Bachmann we see that Eppendorf’s strategic reorientation is taking effect and enabling additional growth.” This was particularly noteworthy because Eppendorf’s employees at all its facilities around the world had succeeded in accelerating the company’s growth course once again despite the additional effort required by the changes at Eppendorf.  “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our employees worldwide for this extraordinary commitment,” he said.  Outlook Thanks to the very strong development during the first half-year and the positive market environment Eppendorf assumes that it will reach its ambitious growth targets for the entire year and that the company will once again grow faster than the market.  As part of the targeted implementation of its company strategy Eppendorf is continuing to invest heavily in new product and service solutions as well as in digitalization and new business models This also applies to expansions in production capacity and infrastructure at its German sites in Hamburg Leipzig and Jülich as well as at the Enfield site These construction projects represent important efforts in the company’s push for further profitable and sustainable growth In view of the higher costs planned for the infrastructure measures and given comparable exchange rates for the entire year of 2019 the company assumes that EBIT in 2019 will remain at or around the prior-year level of €153.7 million.  FL  – Horse enthusiasts interested in purchasing world-class sport horses will be able
