Transfer credits Seo had from his Dallas high school hadn't been calculated correctly
Once the Cooper registrar's office figured out the mistake
Cooper High Principal Karen Munoz provided an explanation that mirrored the one Thomlinson provided
"We are very sorry about that way our top students learned that their ranks had changed from the unofficial rankings they were provided earlier," Munoz said in an email Friday
it was not until a few days before the announcement that we discovered some courses were incorrectly entered into the transcript of a transfer student (Seo)
"We are thankful that our safeguard of validating grade-point averages is in place

"I would have a blanket over my head with a light on

He had a choice to make: Go to school and continue earning top grades
play football or get a job and start earning money to help his family
He got a job working at Century 12 movie theater
close enough for him to ride his bicycle to work before he was able to buy a car
he'd work 40 hours all while earning valedictorian-level grades in his challenging classes
but the decision was easier to swallow than what Cooper put him through last week
Thomlinson made a decision for his schooling based on the tuition waiver valedictorians receive from Texas's public universities
after spending the past almost-four-years as supposed valedictorian
he chose a slightly easier path than a valedictorian might
Instead of a full course load of Advanced Placement classes
he probably would've gone a different route
"I've never heard of anyone's rank changing that close to the end," he said
And none of the teachers want to do anything that could affect a student's rank
I just wish I could've known sooner so I could've made a different choice."

Fuel-cell or battery-electric trucks to collect waste
Both types are increasingly finding their way into municipal waste disposal companies
We asked around in Freiburg and Munich where one waste management company is currently testing two fuel cell refuse collection vehicles
Freiburg’s waste management company (ASF) has worked with various electric vehicles for many years
it has deployed 17 vehicles: small sweepers
with battery capacities designed for daily trips of up to 100 kilometres
ASF aims to have converted its fleet of around 170 vehicles
Another step towards this goal was ASF recently starting to use two waste collection vehicles from Germany’s Faun Umwelttechnik powered by fuel cells and a payload of eleven tons
“I am convinced that in the heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector
fuel cells are more forward-looking than pure e-drives,” says Michael Broglin
the new collection vehicle’s payload of eleven tons is as high as a conventionally powered diesel truck
Its range of approximately 200 kilometres also meets the requirements of daily tours
these two factors were decisive in choosing the fuel cell vehicles
ASF could save up to 60 tons of CO2 a year during the daily collection of organic and paper waste
“We’ve also achieved significantly lower noise emissions for our drivers
and the waste workers behind the vehicles are no longer standing in the exhaust fumes – their reaction so far has been positive all around,” says Broglin
Drivers who have been using the H2 vehicles no longer want to switch
The plan is to use twelve more collection vehicles with climate-friendly technology in Freiburg by the end of 2023
a commercial vehicle manufacturer based in Osterholz-Scharmbeck
has been adapting fuel cells for commercial vehicles for several years at its headquarters north of Bremen
In Faun’s so-called Bluepower chassis
the fuel cell has 30 kW and the battery’s energy content of 85 kWh
The latter provides additional energy during acceleration and absorbs recuperation energy – an elementary task in the everyday stop-and-go traffic of waste management
“We chose the fuel-cell variant because we can charge the vehicles and refuel them with hydrogen
we get by with one tank filling per week,” the managing director tells us
The tank capacity for hydrogen is 16.4 kilograms at 700 bar
He says that no green hydrogen from renewable energy is available yet
things won’t add up,” says Broglin
the power supply at ASF is being converted to medium voltage to guarantee the electrical energy supply is better
ASF has 70 AC charging points with 22 kilowatts (kW) and one DC charger with 40 kW
which the company built in cooperation with the local energy supplier
ASF’s share of electric vehicles is expected to grow significantly
The plan is to be exclusively all-electric in 2025 in the city cleaning sector
where lighter vehicles are predominantly used
Broglin expects to have made the switch to zero-emission operation by 2030
The acquisition costs of the two hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles – around 1.44 million euros (net)
three times as much as conventional diesel trucks – were covered to about 75 per cent by federal subsidies
A grant of around 925,000 euros (net) was provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure
An additional grant of 150,000 euros (net) was provided through the Innovation Fund of badenova AG & Co
ASF also received funding for most of the other e-vehicles
Alternative drive systems for heavy commercial vehicles are also on the rise at the waste management company in Munich (AWM). For example, for about a year, the municipal waste disposal company has been using Volvo FE Electric roll-off tipper for container logistics from the recycling centres to a nearby disposal facility
The 27-ton truck is equipped with four lithium-ion batteries
and is on the road throughout the Bavarian capital
AWM had already put a comparable vehicle with roll-off tipper and diesel hybrid technology from Volvo Trucks into operation in 2012
“We had a very good experience with that
Now taking the next step with this all-electric truck is the logical consequence,” says Reinhold Bauer
He discovered the FE Electric at a trade fair two years ago
was immediately taken with it and initiated the tender for its procurement
The vehicle has been subsidised at 90 per cent of the additional cost compared to a diesel truck
“Our drivers love it because it’s quiet
that’s enough for now,” he adds
he says he initially assumed that there would be enough fast-charging stations in the city where the vehicle’s battery could be temporarily charged
Bauer was disappointed to discover that there is only one suitable charging station in the whole of Munich
but most charging stations are only designed for 500 or 600 volts,” he realised
after first believing the Volvo charging cable was broken
Even the charging point that is suitable in itself cannot be approached: “When we drive there
and the operator is understandably less than thrilled about that,” Bauer describes
The electric roll-off tipper charges exclusively at the depot
only AC charging points with 22 kW are available there
the driver only brings ten per cent SoC to his vehicle there
Bauer: “We could double the range if we had our own fast-charging station.” One is now planned for the first quarter of 2022
the charging process will continue to occur overnight at 22 kW
but they have learned to make do with the battery capacity or return in time to avoid risking a layover,” he says
The RL 18 body of the FE Electric comes from Meiller
the roll-off tipper can be operated safely using a radio remote control
“This gives our drivers a better overview,” explains Bauer
because in addition to environmental protection
AWM also focuses on safety for its personnel
the body of the roll-off tipper is now also considerably quieter than with a conventional vehicle since the hydraulic pump only runs when the roll-off tipper is actually in operation
the city of Munich and the waste disposal company plan to convert the fleet of around 250 heavy vehicles to climate-neutral drives and fuels
ten partially electrified light refuse collection vehicles
which AWM has built in collaboration with Mercedes
Bauer also envisages testing fuel cell technology
A Faun vehicle with its Bluepower technology has been ordered but will probably not be delivered until October 2022
AWM is also taking advantage of the city and federal funding programs to convert its fleet to alternative drives
This list is not extensive but indicative of the huge potential electrification has for waste management

A story making the rounds online about Ukrainian refugees is false and is intentionally stylized as a Bild news story
the video is a collage of several videos from previous years
Russian media and social network users are actively disseminating a story allegedly by the German tabloid Bild
who while attempting to burn the Russian flag
set fire to the house of the German family who hosted them
Details of this “story” are floating online on social networks
the pro-Russian telegram channel Mash in Donbass writes that the incident allegedly took place in the city of Wulfen (North Rhine-Westphalia)
where the Michalski family received refugees from Ukraine in their house
The Ukrainians allegedly built a Tesla coil to burn the Russian flag
Despite the fact that the video looks like a news report from the well-known German tabloid Bild
and many details of this alleged event are circulating on the web
StopFake was unable to find this story on the Bild official website nor on its social media pages
There is also no information about such an event in the local German media
As it turns out, this video was first published on May 14, 2022, on the Nachrichten und Gerüchte (News and Rumors) YouTube channel. The annotation to the video says: “They wanted to burn the Russian flag
Ukrainian refugees decided to use the Tesla hell machine to burn the Russian flag to get hype and likes
The whole house burned down.” It is noteworthy that this channel was also created on May 14
the very the day the video was first published online
it was most likely created intentionally in order to spread disinformation about refugees from Ukraine
An analysis of the video showed that it was deliberately styled as a Bild news story
and the video itself is a collage of several videos from previous years
StopFake was able to identify at least two such fragments
Part of the doctored video, where we see the close-up of a burning house, is actually footage of a fire in the village of Walluf, in the German Hesse state. This video was first published online in July 2013
The second part of the video, where a woman talks about her burned down house, was cut from a Bild news story from January 13, 2021
The woman in the video is indeed named Natalia Michalski
The description of the video reads as follows: “A family house is on fire in Osterholz-Scharmbeck
As the fire brigade approaches the blazing roof
no one can imagine how emotional this event will prove to all involved
the house that her mother had lovingly built for her
nor the previous video from 2013 have anything to do with Ukrainian refugees
This is not the first time that Russian propagandists have deliberately spread false information about Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression abroad with the aim of discrediting the very idea of helping Ukraine:

1 min readSeveral German memorial stones for Jews who were killed in the Holocaust have been vandalised with antisemitic messages
are small plaques set into the ground outside a Shoah victim’s last-known freely chosen residence
Tens of thousands have been created in Europe over the past three decades to commemorate Nazi brutality on an individual level
at least seven have now been vandalised in what appears to be a campaign of harrasment
The phrase “Jews are criminals” has been graffitied on several
the Thuringer Allgemeine reported this week
The same words are also said to have been scrawled on posters advertising the Achava Festival
chief executive of Britain’s Holocaust Educational Trust
Stolpersteine are ‘stumbling stones’ and are placed all over Europe as memorials to the various Jewish families or individuals who lived in these homes and were murdered during the Holocaust
"This deliberate hateful act is yet another example of the antisemitism sweeping across the world
"It reminds us that despite the phrase Never Again being coined after the horrors of Holocaust
The latest vandalism of the Shoah memorial stones is just the latest in a wave of attacks
a newly laid stolpersteine was stolen from the streets of Weimar
a brick in the north-western town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck was painted over
while in Dortmund nearly two dozen were defaced with blue paint
Germany's domestic intelligence agency said antisemitic crimes had jumped from just 33 in 2022 to 492 in 2023
with the vast majority committed after October 7
Stars of David have been painted on buildings
petrol bombs have been thrown at synagogues
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: “Every form of antisemitism poisons our society
“Never again – that means the physical protection of Jewish institutions and communities
It means that the police and judiciary consistently enforce applicable law.”

(ANS – Seville) – Salesians from the Mary Help of Christians Province (SMX)
have decided through various partner institutions to improve the chances of young people
to find a job through a solution that relies on education and
includes the implementation of strategies to internationalise the quality of their centres
This is why the SMX Province is participating in a vocational training project of the Erasmus+ KA2 programme
together with several other partner institutions from Belgium
The “Prep4Pro” (Preparation for ErasmusPro) project came into being with these objectives in mind
which started to take shape in May 2022 almost at the end of the first Erasmus+ KA3 programme carried out in the Province
which was very well received during the 24 months it was running
Prep4Pro hasbeen developed thanks to the work of partner organisations in Belgium
quality and trust-based network between European VET providers to promote and facilitate the organisation and implementation of long-term mobility for VET learners
“They contacted the SMX Province once more to propose this involvement
and on this occasion specified the actions and activities of the project in two of our centres
The project grew out of an initial contact by the Belgian coordinator with the SMX coordination for internationalisation
at a seminar organised by the Spanish Service for the Internationalisation of Education (SEPIE
“Given the early experience in this type of project
we decided that this could be a good opportunity to give continuity to European projects and continue to grow in this field“ they added
“Prep4Pro” will last for two and a half years
during which six face-to-face meetings are planned for the implementation of the project
which will be complemented by online meetings
a pilot test with pupils will also be carried out
a first face-to-face meeting has taken place in Brussels in January
These will be followed by further meetings in Finland in November

“The lyrics to this track (and the song title) are primarily inspired by Robert Burns’ Address to the Devil and reference the poem quite a bit (as well as other works of Burns)
though where the poem kind of downplays and mocks the Devil
I wanted to switch the point of view and insert a few nods to the treacherous Scottish landscapes and mythical creatures – with nature being the Devil’s Church
For the first time in Hellripper’s music
you will hear the sound of bagpipes in the latter part of the song which also ties in with the lyrical theme.”
