Paradies Lagardère Travel Retail tells TRBusiness that it remains too early to speculate on travel and spending drifts following the US presidential election the chief of Lagardère Travel Retail’s North America business argues that collaboration with landlords concessionaires and business partners will forge the foundations for the company’s sustained success In Lagardère Travel Retail’s full-year 2024 results released on 13 February the Americas – accounting for a 26% slice of revenue – returned growth of +6%to the Paris-headquartered travel retailer’s topline return of +12.5% year-on-year (LFL) That result owed much to the restoration of normalising air traffic levels in the US and ‘strong momentum’ in Canada Backtrack to this time last year and Paradies Lagardère President & CEO Gregg Paradies shared a target of $1.6 billion in annual sales by the end of the year Updating TRBusiness he confirms that expectations were “We are proud to have achieved our goal of more than $1.6 billion in 2024 a result that reflects the dedication and hard work of our associates especially those in our over 700 stores and restaurants who provide exceptional service to travellers every day,” he said “This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of our strategic initiatives and the unwavering commitment of our entire team to deliver excellence across all aspects of our business While reaching this milestone is significant we remain focused on continuous improvement which will result in further growth and innovation in 2025 and beyond.” Lagardère Travel Retail’s North America division restaurants and bars in more than 90 airports on the continent focusing on Travel Essentials enjoyed robust performances across those core segments “Each of these categories has experienced substantial growth and we’re proud of the innovative concepts and exceptional experiences we’ve brought to travellers,” enthused Paradies convenience and affordability addresses shifting consumer demands while enhancing the airport experience Pictured is The Goods travel essentials store at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport It was a big year for US airport tenders in 2024 with retail concession programmes awarded at the likes of New York JFK Terminal 6 and Terminal 8 Newark Liberty Terminal B and John Wayne (Orange County a ‘record number’ of RFP wins and contract extensions were secured at the likes of Boise Airport Portland International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport we remain focused on exploring opportunities in a disciplined and cautious manner that align with our mission of delivering exceptional experiences to travellers while expanding in strategic markets,” commented Paradies In an increasingly fierce trading environment susceptible to continued price increases and exacerbated by (at times) eye-watering bidding levels following years of industry consolidation the stakes remain high for concessionaires and their partners Asked to elaborate on the company’s approach to business tenders Paradies was frank: “When it comes to our bidding strategy our red line is clearly defined: we only respond to tenders that enable us to offer a first-class concessions programme while ensuring a reasonable return on investment “As a market leader operating in an already highly optimised environment traditional operational and commercial strategies alone are insufficient to offset the dramatic cost increases affecting the industry our approach is twofold: In markets that are no longer financially viable we will refrain from pursuing or bidding on future concession opportunities until financial sustainability is restored we are working closely with our airport partners to establish contractually sustainable solutions This includes tactical colouration to optimise capex and leveraging new technologies wherever possible to improve operational efficiencies.” Standing still is not an option for retailers at the mercy of persistent currency volatility high interest rates and dogged inflation that weighs on consumers’ discretionary spending Hip & Humble at Salt Lake City International Airport Paradies acknowledges that while traffic trends were solid in North America in the first half of 2024 revenue per enplanement flattened in H2 and this has continued into 2025 “Early data suggests that price increases are becoming less effective signalling that reliance on annual price adjustments to offset rising costs is no longer a sustainable strategy,” he noted “Labour costs remain another significant challenge; Construction and capital expenditure (capex) costs also remain elevated there are more opportunities than available capital meaning investments will flow toward the most viable prospects.” Trump’s second election victory in the US and the implications for travel and spending “It is too early to speculate on how the US election will impact travel and spending,” he responded “Our focus remains on ‘controlling the controllables’ while staying agile to navigate changes in our industry and the broader economy.” To access the full article, see the film criticism on the internet — the mid-1990s — and you may land on Film Scouts Reference Library despite its lack of design so characteristic of websites back then contains a rich archive of notes and first impressions of independent movies that premiered during the era affording us a hint of precious historic insight In the first year of the Film Scouts Reference Library the critics who contributed to its content paid a lot of attention to the 1996 Toronto Film Festival during which film critic Kathleen Carroll wrote two pieces about the same film found in the Film Scouts Diaries section of the website Carroll’s two entries are notable because it is where she met an emerging American filmmaker showed him around the festival and its many parties and activities and marveled at his first feature film screening at the festival If you haven’t seen the film — not to be mistaken with three other films of the same title that came out in 2001 and 2020 — blame the film industry’s approach toward independent films but it did not get the wider distribution it deserved here the Lensic will present a benefit preview screening of Shoob’s latest project which Shoob tells Pasatiempo is a sequel to Driven but one that doesn’t require you to have seen that film Benefit preview screening followed by a Q&A with Michael Shoob and Robert Mirabal 505-988-1234; lensic.org The event at the Lensic benefits the nonprofit Intertribal Connection Initiative whose purpose is to provide healing and connection for Indigenous youth by bridging the gap between generations and tribes and promoting life and connection as strategies for preventing substance abuse no one but the film’s crew and cast have actually seen the final cut of Road to Everywhere Based on what Shoob and one of his two leads we know this much: The film features one of the characters from Shoob’s 1996 film cab driver Jason Schuyler (played by Whip Hubley; Top Gun whose job in Driven gives him the anonymity he desires The new film also features several other characters from Driven like Rachel Schuyler (played by Diane DiLascio) Dale Schneider (Daniel Roebuck; The Fugitive the narrative also intertwines with flashbacks to scenes from Driven Driven tells the story of a small group of cab drivers in Los Angeles who are at the bottom of the economic pile: Hubley who was originally meant to be in Road to Everywhere but his health prevented him from going too far with the project Road to Everywhere largely takes place in the Navajo Nation but Shoob resists divulging too much of the new film’s narrative the log line would be this,” he says via a phone interview “An older cab driver [played by Hubley] who’s had his struggles in life and is in the middle of some very difficult financial problems is offered the trip of a lifetime in terms of money — in terms of what cab drivers make — when Jake a Native American gambler [played by Mirabal] and casino executive asks him to drive him to the Navajo Nation because Jake wants to see the grandson he’s never met take part in his first rodeo.” The decision to film in a Navajo community initially had to do with the idea of focusing on a big sporting event goes back to the American Film Institute with me He was the director of photography on everything I’ve done and it was Joe who came up with the idea of looking at basketball on the Navajo Reservation And then it became rodeo at a certain point “Native American rodeo is a very big deal,” Shoob continues and the folks at that rodeo were so wonderful to us In addition to featuring recurring characters from Driven Road to Everywhere has new lead and supporting roles played by Native American actors like Santa Fe’s DezBaa’ (Diné) (Dark Winds Shoob had a particularly difficult time finding the right actor to play the Native casino executive “I couldn’t find anybody I liked for the role,” he says He had done some things in terms of acting but then I watched his musical performances and he had so much personal charisma as a musical performer Shoob adds that Mirabal “really responded to the script and he really put his heart and soul into it.” He performs live music and dance performances worldwide as well as in storytelling productions and live theater He also composes scores for TV and films and is a two-time Grammy Award winner most notably as Principal Littlefield in Yellowstone alongside Kevin Costner But working on a lead role for Road to Everywhere required him to change gears “I love performing live music or live theater or plays and productions,” Mirabal says from his Taos Pueblo home You should already have the prowess to jump in and a connection to your character because you never know how the other actors are going to respond.” he says film acting is a completely different craft or 100 people on the set at any given time with everyone having a very specific role in the production You work for the director and for the producers You constantly think about the character and the writing and the other actors that you’re working with I have a hard time just sitting and waiting as it premiered in 1996 at the Toronto Film Festival Carroll wrote in the Film Scouts Diaries for the Film Scouts Reference Library: “The film captured the insular world of three restless L.A cab drivers with such compelling honesty that at one point I did something that critics hardly ever do: I cried … I was especially taken with Shoob’s writing His characters … sound so authentic that I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that Shoob himself drove a cab during his 15-year struggle to make his first full-length film."  Get the highlights from Santa Fe's weekly magazine of arts Pasatiempo's most popular online content from the past traditional leisure activity professional gaming has also become established in recent years This electronic sport (e-sports for short) comprises digital competitions in which players or teams compete against each other e-sports are organized into leagues and tournaments are held With more than 570 million viewers worldwide e-sports have long since become part of mainstream society According to a study by the German Games Industry Association one in five Germans belongs to the e-sports community The structures have become highly professionalized in recent years the associated hardware and online gaming services has risen by six percent to a total of almost ten billion euros in 2023 the virtual arena not only offers great entertainment potential but also a platform for criminals to conceal their activities Video games are increasingly incorporating digital economic systems Players can earn virtual currencies by completing challenges or acquire them for a fee A distinction is made between convertible and non-convertible in-game currencies Non-convertible in-game currency can only be used to purchase virtual objects can be traded with other players via an exchange platform The use of virtual currencies and the anonymity of player accounts create an environment that is susceptible to criminal activity Criminals use illegally obtained funds to purchase virtual objects and then sell them (for a profit) via an external marketplace Although the user agreements of most game providers prohibit this practice it is virtually impossible to enforce the ban the transfer of game currency between several player accounts controlled by a criminal group can be used to conceal the origin of the funds These virtual transactions are known as microtransactions The individual purchases and sales rarely involve large sums but the sum of the transactions is enormous Filtering out conspicuous payments made by criminals to launder illegally acquired money is like looking for a needle in a haystack gaming providers are already subject to money laundering regulations they fall under the privileged status of the Anti-Money Laundering Act and do not have to implement risk management1 or comply with customer due diligence obligations.2 gaming providers remain obliged to report suspicious business transactions this requires the provision of appropriate and effective security systems which are likely to be inadequate or non-existent in their current form games providers are not obliged to operate a data processing system to detect suspicious transactions To protect their customers and their own reputation game providers should implement adequate security measures even without a legal obligation identifying players and ensuring effective monitoring of microtransactions within the virtual gaming industry by requiring players who wish to participate in the virtual gaming economy to first enter into a business relationship with a subsidiary of the game provider that acts as a payment service provider The latter is therefore subject to comprehensive obligations to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing and can identify suspicious transactions and block affected player accounts By continuously analyzing the payment flows that are processed via their platforms gaming providers can ensure that they manage money laundering and fraud risks appropriately and do not inadvertently become a stooge for money launderers The experts at KPMG will be happy to answer any questions you may have about money laundering prevention ©
