GERMANY: München municipal utility company SWM has awarded Robel Bahnbaumaschinen a contract to supply six multifunctional maintenance vehicles for the U-Bahn network by mid-2024 said increased service frequencies and new lines are needed to support modal shift in the city The first really warm sunrays of the year sparkle through the dense crowns of the chestnut trees The scent of plugfish and fresh pretzels spreads and the birds chirp in a cheerful jumble But all this fades into the background as soon as the first beer of the year under the open sky ends the winter which convey the typical Munich attitude to life But how can that be reconciled with the typical Munich high society which strolls along Maximilianstraße and prefers an aperitif in Tambosi (famous Munich restaurant) instead of beer benches which are usually considered uncomfortable People strive for simplicity in a world so diverse and overloaded with information By using stereotypes the simplicity is given back a little bit The assumptions we make about a group of people simplify our everyday life and enable us to assess unknown people more quickly Whereas chlichés describe an ingrained the archetypes go well below the surface and represent role patterns that are associated with certain actions Many people' childhoods were influenced by Gustl Bayrhammer who was known as Meister Eder with Pumuckl or as Inspector Melchior Weigl with dachshund Oswald in the Munich Tatort (famous German TV series) the typical Munich man with Bavarian cosiness could hardly be better portrayed.  Judging by numerous travel guides about Munich Nymphenburg Castle and Frauenkirche with its famous two towers Viktualienmarkt or Hofbräuhaus am Platzl should not be missed. Moreover all agree that everyone should visit the Oktoberfest once which really characterizes the cosmopolitan city with heart we can get a glimpse behind the scenes of Munich and still discover a few clichés or typical sights in a new way - just typically untypical The large arrival hall is filled with the hustle and bustle of people suitcases are hectically pulled across the floor and in the background the sounds of arriving trains can be heard Munich's main station is often the first thing Munich's visitors see and it is also often used by Munich's residents as a transfer point during the rush hour is hardly ever seen by visitors and most Munich residents have never visited it the two stations do not seem to have anything else in common, but in fact Pasing station which was built in 1854 and extended in 1873 has some similarities to Munich's original Central Station The two buildings owe their similarity to the architect Friedrich Bürklein who was responsible for the construction of the platform hall in the centre of Munich and the first station building in Pasing His range of work also includes the construction of the stereotyped Maximilianstraße the surrounding buildings of the Upper Bavarian government which is used as the seat of the Bavarian parliament Whereas in Pasing the brick building continues to create a historical atmosphere only parts of the station built by Friedrich Bürklein are still clearly visible Pasing also has other similarities with the typical sights that everyone should see in Munich The carillon in the tower of the new Munich town hall at Marienplatz attracts thousands of tourists every day while FC Bayern fans connect Marienplatz with numerous championship celebrations which makes every gourmet and bon vivant happy is also a popular attraction for both tourists and residents But most of the numerous travel guides or recommendations do not mention that Pasing also has both a Viktualienmarkt and a Marienplatz The typical Marian Column can also be visited in the historical city centre of Pasing and the Viktualienmarkt attracts residents and visitors to Pasing with irresistible smells both places are crowded with people and there is barely a possibility to have a break in Pasing we have the possibility to browse comfortably through the shops try some delicacies or have a look at the Marian column that was not already photographed by thousands and thousands of tourists The fountains of Liesl Karstadt and Roider Jackl which for many people embody typical Munich people He also built the fish fountain at the Viktualienmarkt in Pasing and the well-wishers' fountain in front of the town hall in Pasing The typical Munich does not only include famous sights but also the sense of tradition with which Munich's citizens are often described Many people think of a typical tradition-loving inhabitant of Munich dressed in traditional costume who grumbles in a dialect that is incomprehensible to most people When I started to search for this cliché a former day labourer's house where tradition is kept alive Hardly any other house than the Carlhäusl which is used by the local and folk costume association D'Würmtaler fits so well with the saying \"Dositzndedodedooiweidositzn\" (these are the people who always sit there) the tradition of the gun salutes or the \"Schuhplatteln\" (typical folk dance) is still maintained on certain occasions regular club evenings or the \"Frühshoppn\" that is common in Bavaria take place here because you always meet the usual group of people in the same place and enjoy a hearty snack with a cold beer - the tradition of Munich par excellence oh oh\" are singing once a year about 7000 people while sparklers slowly light up under the sky of the Bavarians A feeling of melancholy spreads out on the last evening of the Oktoberfest which creates a unique atmosphere and is therefore loved by the Munich people for a reason A festival that is associated with Munich almost everywhere in the world and which could hardly better embody the \"typical Munich\" by the traditional costume All those who are already looking forward to the next Oktoberfest will feel right at home in the underpass at Pasing station as it bears a certain resemblance to the Hacker-Pschorr tent And also tourists have the possibility to have a completely different look at the Bavarian sky which otherwise is only known from the Oktoberfest maybe without the atmosphere and a little bit different The sky panorama was designed by the two Munich artists Haubitz and Zoche and in addition to the well-known tent ceiling You might think you have to count seven planes because of the name but even after a longer search you will only find six planes as you are in the seventh plane yourself due to the perspective Another highlight in Munich is without any doubt the Nymphenburg Palace which is located in the west of Munich in the adjacent district of Neuhausen-Nymphenburg and attracts thousands of visitors every day the impressive castle park and its fountain there and think back to a long forgotten time we have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the magical castle at the sluice between the Würm and the Nymphenburg Canal you will find the canal keeper's house in an idyllic setting This is where the canal keeper makes sure that the fountains and ponds at Nymphenburg Castle always have the same amount of water available in the canal But we don't only have the opportunity to have a look behind the scenes of the palace but also to discover a different kind of castle Blutenburg Castle is surrounded by a picturesque scenery and is situated at a pond inhabited by ducks and swans In 1430 the former weir system was converted into a hunting lodge by Duke Albrecht III and at the end of the 15th century his son Sigismund added the impressive castle chapel In addition to the largest library of children's and youth literature in the world the castle also accommodates the small and extremely cozy Michael Ende Museum photos and personal items and dream yourself into the worlds of Jim Knopf or Momo only a few people know that Maria Dolores Elisa Gilbert spent a night in Blutenburg Castle during her escape from Bavaria in 1848 As one of the most important figures in Bavarian history her behaviour and her liaison with the king led to the end of his reign The first villa colony of Pasing was built at the end of the 19th century north of the railway lines and south of the castle The colony developed by August Exter enjoyed great popularity due to the railway lines which were extended in 1840 and created an ideal connection to Munich The artist Hans Osel was also among the residents You might think you are going to meet the high society sung about by the music band Spider Murphy Gang but in fact we get a completely different look at the shy which is usually only expected in Munich's noble quarters Bogenhausen or Harlaching Instead of the notorious champagne-drinking high society in P1 Munich's most famous and stereotyped nightclub we now see lovingly tended gardens in front of idyllically situated and individual houses but still remained a resident of Pasing on the inside.\" describes quite well that the locals don't want to be forced into the cliché of the \"typical Munich resident\".  The citizens of Pasing therefore still have the same self-confidence despite being incorporated on 8 January 1939.  At the former town hall we can still feel the self-confidence which was the fifth largest town in Upper Bavaria at the time of the incorporation Especially the Pasing coat of arms on the balcony of the town hall still reminds us of that time But not only the inhabitants of Pasing are characterized by their self-confidence the inhabitants of Obermenzing also sing in their song \"Mir san net von Pasing mir san halt im lustigen Menzing daheim\" (we are not from Pasing the two districts could hardly be more different Whereas Pasing is more reminiscent of a city within a city due to its lively hustle and bustle Obermenzing awakens a feeling of Bavarian cosiness due to its colony of villas This is exactly why the presumably oldest restaurant in Munich called Gasthof zum Alten Wirt von Obermenzing offers us an ideal place to let all experiences sink in while enjoying a cold beer and delicious food surrounded by chestnut trees but this time we got to know much more about Munich We noticed that some clichés are true the sense of tradition or special sights that are praised with a good reason by every travel guide But we also realized that Munich is mainly characterized by its diversity Therefore you should always question well-known stereotypes and take a look behind the scenes because as Michael Ende already pointed out in the neverending story: that we cannot fathom by thinking about them If you have now become curious about the 21st district of Munich then you should take the tour \"Pasing-Obermenzing the typical untypical district of Munich\" Learn more about the district and discover the tragic stories behind Blutenburg Castle or the Johann-Nepomuk-Chapel fits so well with the saying "Dositzndedodedooiweidositzn" (these are the people who always sit there) the tradition of the gun salutes or the "Schuhplatteln" (typical folk dance) is still maintained on certain occasions regular club evenings or the "Frühshoppn" that is common in Bavaria take place here oh oh" are singing once a year about 7000 people A festival that is associated with Munich almost everywhere in the world and which could hardly better embody the "typical Munich" by the traditional costume but still remained a resident of Pasing on the inside." describes quite well that the locals don't want to be forced into the cliché of the "typical Munich resident".  the inhabitants of Obermenzing also sing in their song "Mir san net von Pasing mir san halt im lustigen Menzing daheim" (we are not from exceptionally good at demonstrating the range of approaches from the representational and sublime in the Hand-Drawn category to the highly abstract and conceptual in the Digital category we see an approach that wittily and skillfully plays with the very idea of more traditional architectural renderings.” Here is a close look at the winning entries across the three categories: the “exceptionally atmospheric” work by Ye explores the relationship between nature and man-made as an eternal topic and mode of expression Ye spoke to STIR about his winning entry —"The future city should be restrained with harmony and unity between nature and artificiality I sought to create a vision of the future city through the reconstruction of architecture and nature (mountains The scene shown in the painting expresses a simple and restrained aesthetic appreciation.” Ye also believes that cities, specially designed ones, must inherit the quiet, silent, and mysterious power of mountains, as shown in The Spirit of Mountain. An understanding of traditional Chinese painting was also put into this drawing, creating an immersive experience and imagination of sightseeing as well as a certain narrative of timeliness expressed succinctly in black and white “Qiyun(气韵)—a feeling similar to music— is also one of the inherent qualities and feel of this work” “It is unexpected and pleasant, that this work can win. Indeed, hand painting should be an indispensable part of architectural design. Paper and pen can help people tap into their originality, weaving in simple, sorted-out feelings and finding happiness in design. I hope that my work can encourage more students and designers to return to the most authentic form of design expression as I believe it can also promote our thinking,” Ye elaborates The Architecture Drawing Prize Jury Chair and Director of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) describes the work — “This is a drawing of great delicacy which highlights the difference between a tall-building aesthetic and the possibility of disrupting it in a creative way via the insertion of nature as an artistic intervention The Hand-Drawn Category shortlist included: The Temple of Gaia by Giorgos Christofi; Final Mexico Drawing by Ben Johnson; and Homage to Corb by Dustin Wheat Colourfully crowded and artistically architectural Samuel Wen and Michael Ren’s Fitzroy Food Institute is a layered visceral drawing exploring themes of Chinese culture and one of the eight judges of The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 comments on this winning entry —“Fitzroy Food Institute stands out for its well-considered and subtle use of colour It is a very accessible drawing looking over a shared meal at a table yet it is full of architectural interest featuring not only a plan but sections and elevations as well as detail A conceptually original and genuinely delightful entry.” Wen tells STIR about his intent —"The medium of dumplings in Chinese cuisine was the perfect food through which we could explore the ideas of (oriental) cultural perception and facilitate an increase in engagement with food theory through an institutional architecture The project aims not as much to answer but to stimulate conversation and promote different perspectives and ways of thinking about these not-so-uncommon topics.” The 'Fitzroy Food Institute' was completed as a mix of hand-drawn elements and digital software presented in a top-down view of a ‘typically Chinese’ roundtable dining setting “Fitzroy Food Institute indicates a pretty self-explanatory description of the project; however the institute itself is named “the humble dumpling” extracting itself from notions of grandiose and favouring a mode of accessibility and opportunity learn and experience what the institute has to offer decorated with a series of miscellaneous table-setting elements,” Wen informs that they are beyond grateful for their work to have received such recognition “Being able to convey such ideas and a captivating narrative through drawing had been the aim from the beginning so being able to accept this award means a lot to us!” The Hybrid Category shortlist also included The Stamper Battery by William du Toit and Traversing Dreamscapes by Sean Seah who was the Overall Winner of The Architecture Drawing Prize in 2019 was selected the winner for the Digital Category in 2022 which plays on ideas centred around “the beginning the end and the finite.” Speaking to STIR Pasing highlights the message of his winning entry — “The intention is simple To bring something into the world that did not exist before Something that moves me and largely represents my unalterable processing of the world’s experience I want to give back what my environment has written into my program The picture is a page of a personal diary if you will I overdraw relationships to make them recognisable or destroy them the absurd and the meaningless are written into our existence more clearly than we might like to admit.” Pasing also shares that The Wall describes a traumatic state and its structure — “it is the beginning and the end at the same moment a materially manifested inhalation of the infinite I try to create this state with the means of 3D modelling and digital instruments since this tool provides me with countless sub-tools to create density and complexity.” An excerpt of The Wall's description reads: The wall wasn't just there My gaze wandered around endlessly and found no end It seemed to me that the wall was looking for a counterpart Endless questions coupled with the certainty that you were as real as a liquid dream Reflections of what I saw weren’t me It was the endless projection of everything I longed for… it started raining this picture was articulated about three meters in length a dimension deemed necessary by Passing to let the viewer physically immerse themselves in the image “I understand my work as extensive artistic research because the space is an idea and really everything inherent in this space is connected to invisibly connected constants of an imaginary space I write down my thoughts on the image to generate a context without leaving room for interpretation.” I am therefore grateful and honoured to have had the opportunity to see one of my works exhibited in the famous Sir John Soanne Museum in London again,” Pasing reveals who have been on the judges' panel of The Architecture Drawing Prize since its inception in 2017 articulate why Pasing’s approach to drawing impressed the jury again —“The Wall fills the view with a golden elevation: expansive and richly complex a terrain of construction and sedimented accumulation The Digital Category shortlist also comprised The Minecraft Labyrinth - A Reclamation of Childhood by Eric Pham and Mnemosyne by Meichen Duan In more than half a decade of dedicated writing and research fueled by her education and experience in architecture ideating as well as aligning and editing content for STIR’s design and architecture verticals She also edits and oversees the day-to-day editorial operations for its launch platform Her keen interest in what demands design and creative plurality at large drives her professional pursuits She often tunes into a variety of media centred especially on maligned women true crime and what we get wrong about history From vernacular knowledge to modern sustainability Middle Eastern pavilions serve as living archives of architectural thought offering fresh frameworks for global adoption STIR engages with the curators of the Togo Oman and Qatar pavilions—debuting at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025—on representation the book presents a fictional story depicting algorithms exercising control over humans and how this affects the built environment Tipnis shares how the toolbox democratises the practice of restoration via DIY resources to repair tangible urban heritage made of common building materials Exclusive preview for subscribers. Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies Munich train stations have reopened after Bavaria’s top security official said the threat level from Isis extremists intending to blow themselves up had been reduced. “We no longer have concrete indications for a terror threat today or tomorrow at a specific location,” Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said. He warned, however, that the overall terror threat in Europe remained high. Just before the city rang in the new year, police had evacuated the main train station and a station in the Pasing neighbourhood. Partygoers were asked to avoid crowds. Mr Herrmann said a friendly foreign intelligence service had warned Germany of an imminent attack at midnight by between five and seven Isis militants from Syria and Iraq planning to blow themselves up at locations in Munich, including the two stations. Authorities were investigating intensively, Mr Herrmann said, but so far had not made any arrests. He said they had received personal data for some of the attackers and were still in the process of verifying the information. He would not give any further details on the alleged attackers and could not confirm if they actually existed. Mr Herrmann called on Munich residents to be cautious, but at the same time not to let terror threats interfere with their normal lives. More than 500 police and special unit officers from all over the region were called to Munich on late on 31 January to help evacuate and secure the stations. As of noon on New Year's Day, some 100 extra officers were still present in the city. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere issued a statement thanking the authorities for their “thoughtful, considerate and decisive” action. It read: “The situation in Europe and Germany continues to be serious in the new year. Indeed we did get indications (for a planned attack) yesterday, which were evaluated by the Bavarian intelligence authorities and federal police.” Despite the earlier police warnings to stay away from big crowds, thousands of people took to the streets of Munich at midnight to welcome the new year with fireworks. Cities across Europe have been on edge since the Isis attacks in Paris in November which killed 130 people. Passengers were evacuated from Terminal 3 of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport when a British man was arrested after reportedly shouting bomb threats. Pictures on social media show a man lying on the floor as officers point rifles at him. A spokeswoman at the Dutch airport said: “The 29-year-old man was arrested at around 8am. It was only one check-in line that had to be evacuated for maximum of half an hour – if that. Security control remained open as it is located further away. He was taken away by the police.” This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Police in Munich say they have no information on the whereabouts of those behind a suspected Islamic State-linked terror attack plot in the city Two railway stations have now reopened after being evacuated overnight over reports of a planned attack involving several suicide bombers Munich police have tweeted that there are indications of a planned terror attack in the city and have requested people avoid crowds and train stations Two train stations in the city appear to have been evacuated Munich’s main station and Pasing station reopened in the morning following a temporary closure because the intelligence service had got a “specific” warning London’s Metropolitan Police deployed 3,000 officers in the inner city
