position was thought to be fairly prestigious Schmidt documented his gory tenure in the book “A Hangman’s Diary,” which provided insight into crime and punishment in the Middle Ages and beyond Present-day Nuremberg also has a more immersive legacy of Schmidt and his fellow executioners: a residence built for them on the Pegnitz River in 1320 offers visitors glimpses into one of medieval and Renaissance Europe’s darkest professions It was home to the municipal executioner until 1806 including some lifted from official documents and Schmidt’s journal which made the visit seem more academic than shocking The office of executioner developed as the ruling class consolidated power Ancient Roman law influenced the decision to separate sentencing from punishment The imperial city of Nuremberg may have had an executioner as far back as 1378 Cells and a torture chamber underneath City Hall were where executioners would extract confessions Punishments ranged from public humiliation to death Corporal punishment included branding and mutilation “The resulting physical handicap meant a lifelong loss of honor and esteem,” the exhibit said theft and even blasphemy were often punishable by Wednesday to the victims of a fiery helicopter crash in which more than three dozen American soldiers died 50 years ago military personnel and government officials who in 1971 was a 17-year-old private and a mortarman He was one of the soldiers sent to take the place of those who had died in the helicopter crash “When we dedicated the memorial two years later I was the narrator for the ceremony and got to read all the names,” Hutson said “So it was special knowing they were going to have this ceremony today.” The crash took place close to the autobahn from Munich to Berlin It’s about 10 miles from the Grafenwoehr Training Area Stars and Stripes reported at the time that the crash was due to a crack in the rotor blade caused by a “corroded pit about the size of a finger.” The crack caused the CH-47 Chinook helicopter to plunge to the ground according to the Bavarian police who were at the scene One of the first Germans there saw “four badly charred bodies still fastened to their seats.” Several relatives of the New York native were on hand Wednesday in Pegnitz to honor him and remember his service wore his brother’s uniform at the ceremony “He was two years older than me in the Army I was in the Navy stationed in Antarctica,” Peter Kearney said “I couldn’t come home for the funeral because there are no flights for six months in the dark I came home about a month after it was all over.” Peter was with some buddies drinking beer when his commanding officer told him that the chaplain wanted to speak with him When the chaplain informed him of the news Peter asked which one of his three brothers had been killed the memorial ceremony in Pegnitz served as a substitute for the funeral he couldn’t attend said she was moved by the homage that the people of Pegnitz paid to her brother and his comrades She said that when Arthur joined the service it was during the time of the draft lottery “Arthur joined the Army because he knew he was going to get drafted so he Maintenance teams were called in to clean up debris from the accident and fuel that had leaked from the service member’s wrecked car into the drainage ditch but the accident had little effect on highway traffic Stars and Stripes reporters Jennifer Svan and Karin Zeitvogel contributed to this report I often find myself torn between the comfort of a cozy night at home and the joy of spending time out with friends An evening at a movie theater strikes a balance between the two But living in a foreign country means adding the challenge of finding theaters that screen English-language movies without German dubbing Cinecitta Multiplexkino in Nuremberg offers films that cater to both German- and English-speaking audiences along with restaurants and amenities that encourage spending a little extra time there before or after the show The theater is nestled along the Pegnitz River and close to all the sights and sounds of the city’s old town it’s a scenic 10-minute stroll from one of Europe’s most famous Christmas markets The tickets for “Gladiator II” were 11 euros which is very reasonable in comparison to what I’ve come to expect from American theaters lately But we arrived well in advance to check out what the complex has to offer beyond the movies The atmosphere outside the screenings is a social one cafe and bar wasn’t jumping on a Tuesday evening but I’m told it’s a busy hangout over the weekend The food options include the recently renovated Oriental If hummus and stuffed grape leaves appetizers and pad thai for dinner is your thing The Google returns are positive about the food “remarkable photos on the way to the toilet.” The second floor of the complex hosts an American-style diner where I indulged in one of the most classic fast-food meals from our culture while a friend accompanying me opted for a salad especially since we had both come straight from work without having the chance to grab dinner beforehand but there’s a lot to choose from if you do There’s also the “cappuccino bar” and a roof terrace open in the summer but I wouldn’t be worried about the quality — you’re in Bavaria allowing us to have the entire row to ourselves As for “Gladiator II,” I found it entertaining but they generally say Denzel Washington stole the show especially with the lineup of films debuting early next year I’ll sample more of what Cinecitta has to
