which is about halfway between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart in the state of Baden-Württemberg
The construction on the A8 autobahn just north of town makes trips to Stuttgart for work or the Lake Constance area to visit friends a major pain
which is nicknamed the “Golden City.” That led me to learning about its history as the jewelry and watchmaking capital of Germany
which is well-documented at the Pforzheim Jewelry Museum
It’s the only publicly owned museum dedicated exclusively to jewelry and it features 2,000 exhibits from many places
Some of the jewelry on display goes back five millennia
One of the oldest pieces is just stones strung along for a necklace
The newer jewelry was more ornate with various gemstones
Two necklaces and a brooch were even made with strands of human hair
considering it has been used in the past couple of centuries
which was split up by eras and various empires
It started with ancient Egypt and moved on to recent times
Included were rings from India and China between the 12th and 19th centuries
as well as Jewish wedding rings from between the 8th and 17th centuries
Another section that caught my eye was the Philipp Walter collection of pocket watches
The Pforzheim watch manufacturer amassed 212 of them made between 1550 and 1923
Seeing these watches had me imagining wearing a three-piece suit
just to pull off the look like a Victorian-era gentleman
a voice over the loudspeaker announced a free tour that runs at 3 p.m
I went to the central room hoping to gain more details about the history of jewelry and watchmaking in Pforzheim
But I did catch an interesting story that began with Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden giving his blessing to the jewelry and watchmaking trades in 1767
They quickly took over commerce in the city
including a French Revolution-era ring from belonging to one of the uprising’s ringleaders — although I missed the name because I was too focused on the German side to recognize anything French
She also talked about how the museum is overlooked even by those in the industry
During the city’s jubilee celebrating jewelry and watchmaking in Pforzheim in 2017
only one of 100 folks considered a tour of the museum
It certainly helped change my opinion of what Pforzheim has to offer
6 euros to visit the Technical Museum of Pforzheim’s Jewelry and Watchmaking Industries
Guided tours in English cost 90 euros for one hour and 25 euros for children

CDN looks at the work put together by Pforzheim’s BA Transportation Design students
Student degree shows are an excellent reminder that car design is incredibly creative and ultimately about having fun
The joy of the craft and experimenting with both traditional and emerging tools without the pressure of working in a professional studio
Pforzheim has brought many famous names through the ranks over the years
and CDN went along to learn more about the current crop
we even pushed some students to sketch against the clock and showcase their abilities in real time.
Following the success of last year’s outing
school organisers decided to expand into the adjacent building to bring everyone under one roof
Although the 2024 degree show felt well put together across the lower and upper floors
it did mean that many students were separated from their peers and perhaps ran the risk of going unnoticed to anyone who did not venture up the steps
This year’s setting felt more open and encouraged mingling among the students as they waited for visitors to chat about their projects
They did not have to wait long in most cases
with the professionals-only day drawing strong interest from a range of designers – we assume in many cases scouting potential recruits.
We did not manage to speak to everyone on the day
A handful of students listed below have been highlighted by course leaders Kurt Beyer and class of 2008 graduate Jürgen Jose
who joined Pforzheim in a teaching capacity in April 2024
The following list of Bachelor’s students follows no particular order but is grouped by semester
moving from third through to final thesis.

Car Design News looks at the recent cooperation between OEMs and Pforzheim University
Course leader Kurt Beyer discusses the motivation for these joint projects and
the work done in conjunction with Geely
Every design school puts its students’ work on show to celebrate the effort that went into it
but Pforzheim generally seems to go a little further than some
course leaders decided to move proceedings into the centre of town away from the main campus
occupying two huge floors to showcase the myriad projects of everyone from those one year into their studies to final year graduates.
A key component to the course is the connection with local carmakers
who are only too willing to help set a brief for students to work on
Geely and MAN Truck & Bus involved with both exterior and interior projects on the table
Course leader Kurt Beyer told Car Design News that there are obvious benefits to these kind of collaborations
“Our Transportation Design department is famous for its close relationship with the industry; it’s a win-win situation for…

From boat-tailed buses to airport tugs inspired by Tom Sachs streetwear
the MA students drew inspiration from all over for this year’s show
with projects that look far beyond ‘the car’ in isolation.
If you missed the first installment, you can read that here
this is not an exhaustive list of all students across the course
The list follows no particular order beyond chronological order of semester
progressing from “recently joined” to “about to graduate.”

Changan designers have spent nearly half a year working with students at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences to explore unconventional mobility concepts
The latest project ran through March and July this year and asked students from the transportation design course to investigate the theme of ‘3D Mobility: The Future of Flight Forms’.
Students were also invited along to the Changan European Design Center in Turin, Italy to meet the design team, delve into Chinese culture and consider how to break away from traditional mobility concepts. They also had a chance to get hands on with Changan’s new electric sedan, the SL03
Below are some of the standout future mobility solutions devised by the Pforzheim students during this year’s five-month collaboration
The Race Around the World concept introduces a unique sporting event where participants traverse all the diverse terrains and biomes found on Earth
The vehicle design draws inspiration from rallying
featuring both a pilot cockpit and an AI navigator/co-pilot cockpit
Communication between the pilot and AI relies on cutting-edge brainwave interpretation technology
which visualises brainwave input on the headrest and enables communication between the AI and the pilot
The ‘TYTO’ project provides an opportunity for future generations to break free from digital isolation by turning racing into a social activity
this flying sports machine allows participants to demonstrate their gaming skills in a silent and thrilling race
coupled with advanced technology and materials
The colorful and comfortable cockpit fosters a welcoming atmosphere
allowing teenagers to bond beyond screens and participate in exciting competitions together
The BAO is not merely a food truck serving a variety of world cuisines and fostering cultural connections but also extends a helping hand to those in need of supplies
the Flying Food Truck follows peoples’ schedules
offering diverse food options during lunch breaks and at city events
A prominent screen at the front of the truck informs people about the available foods and ordering times
Below the glass display sits another screen with information about each dish
including ingredients and cultural details
The circular shape of the truck draws inspiration from Chinese steamed dumplings or “baozi.” The truck features a combination of smooth surfaces and a technical area at the back
reflecting the concepts of ‘caring’ and ‘serving people.’
’Arane’ (derived from Ancient Greek) is a travel vehicle inspired by the unique characteristics of the Zhangjiajie Scenic Spot
combining the complex terrain of Zhangjiajie with Spider-Man’s locomotion
Its power system utilises pendulum motion to generate kinetic energy
propelling the pod with a graceful swinging motion and a long magnetised grappling hook
Arane features two swing modes: the dual swing
also known as the “Chaos Swing,” for regular motion
and an adventurous mode with unpredictable and dynamic motion
These modes provide users with a new and exciting travel experience
allowing them to swing through canyons and witness the beauty of the scenery from a fresh perspective in this unique national park
This year’s EyesOn Design show was a continuation of a theme: great cars
great designers and good times – all for a good cause.

Car Design News paid a visit to Pforzheim for the University’s degree show
There is more to come from our two-day visit to Pforzheim
but before we share a rundown of the projects on show
here are some general observations about the course
the mindset of the students and how they are approaching vehicle design
Ask 20 students for their view on the future of clay modelling
It is almost a 50-50 split for those that are broadly “for” or “against” with many others a little more balanced: it has a place
but will be utilised alongside all the other digital tools available to them
If the trend of ten years ago was the future of urban mobility
the current vogue is about reconnecting with nature and escaping from the city
Many concepts on show were either explicit off-roaders or looked to bring cross-country elements into the design
The fact that one model was mounted on a platform covered in moss should be evidence enough
We recently covered the latest colour forecast and it seems many of the students are au fait with what’s going on in this respect
Purple – or digital lavender in many cases – was one of the most common colours on show across interiors
and many of the students we spoke to referenced a focus on well-being as a driving force
It was not only about colour though — in some cases it was about turning a people-carrier sized vehicle into a three seater designed to carry only your best friends around (including pets) and even a few single seaters
one of which is designed to support a year-long solo getaway
product design… The current crop of students are keeping an open mind
There is a general understanding that they will need to be adept at many different skills to succeed
there were certainly a few strong-willed individuals that do not plan on settling on anything other than what they’ve dreamed about as a child
The most specific is to create “beautiful exteriors for super fast cars.”
Pforzheim seems to have a reputation for connecting students with carmakers during their study
with it almost easier to pick out the select few projects that weren’t developed with an OEM sponsor
We were told that mentors would pop in every few weeks to see how things were progressing and to suggest tweaks – very much an advisory role that leaves the ultimate decision with the student
VW and Renault were just some of the brands that had put their name to a particular project
there seems to be a real energy about the students and a camaraderie that only comes from working on tough projects together
Pair that with presentation training and frequent public speaking
and you have a seriously confident group of storytellers who do not shy away when it comes to selling their vision

is to outfit two 380-metre tunnel bores and a service building with operating equipment and traffic engineering systems
The tunnel is part of the noise reduction measures being implemented as part of the six-lane upgrade to the A8 motorway between the Pforzheim-Süd and Pforzheim-Nord junctions in Baden-Württemberg
The project began in July 2022 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2025
A tunnel to cut noise for the benefit of residents
The contract was awarded to the DÜRR Group
a unit from the Building Technology & Automation operational division of SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa
after a public tender process run by Autobahn GmbH Niederlassung Südwest
The affected section of the A8 runs between the Pforzheim-Süd and Pforzheim-Nord junctions and crosses the Enz Valley
the motorway is now being widened to six lanes over roughly 4.8 kilometres and fitted with extensive noise abatement facilities
The experts of the DÜRR Group will oversee all the operating equipment for the two tunnel bores along with the areas immediately before and after the tunnel
as well as the service building installation
The commissioned work includes the installation of LED tunnel lighting with an intelligent control system that will dynamically adjust the lighting according to daylight
reducing electricity consumption by approximately 12% compared to timer-based lighting
Security lighting and other security equipment such as video
as well as medium and low voltage power supply
SPIE will be responsible for the fire-fighting water supply
together with the installation of traffic signals and traffic lights on the gantries
SPIE will install approximately 930 energy-efficient LEDs and more than 50 electrical cabinets
the tunnel equipment will undergo commissioning
Free-flowing traffic on the motorway during the works
will face the challenge of implementing the project while traffic continues to flow in two lanes in each direction for the duration of the work
the workflow they will have to follow is complex and time sensitive
we can only work on the noise tunnel in one direction at a time," explains Flurer
The bore in the roadway towards Stuttgart will be the first to be constructed
after which SPIE will install the equipment
traffic will first be routed in both directions through this borehole
Only then will the second borehole be constructed
"As soon as the construction of the two boreholes is complete
we will start installing our equipment in the second borehole - the one on the Karlsruhe side - while the first borehole is operational," explains Ingo Wehberg
authorised representative and head of sales for the DÜRR Group
"This method requires first-class teamwork and forces us to coordinate regularly and in detail with our customer and the other companies involved," says Andreas Christandl
“We're delighted to have won over our client with our profuse specialist expertise and our solution-focused working methods
and to have gained their confidence in our ability to implement this challenging project”

From a reimagined Renault Avantime to the future of Mercedes-AMG
students at all stages of their design education told CDN about their projects during a visit to Pforzheim University
With an exceptionally busy turnout and students across two floors
it was at times a ‘wait your turn’ affair for the 2024 Pforzheim degree show.
As we wrote in our quick trend report
the vast majority of final thesis projects were created in partnership with OEM sponsors
it was about showcasing the progression of their sketching and unique style
Opel and Mercedes-Benz had curated separate briefs for students mid-way through their studies
Opel’s theme revolved around three terms: Detox
the task was to create an iconic Opel for 2040
while interior projects had to create a “Pure Experience” cockpit for 2040
the Mercedes theme was ’Iconic Luxury’ and encouraged students to explore how that might look in 2030-2050
Below is an overview of the students that CDN took the time to speak to and understand in more detail
A second installment will be on the way.
With thesis students given an open brief for their final projects
Jacob chose to reimagine the iconic Renault Avantime people carrier
and the scale model shows remarkable detail – including…
Germany is synonymous with engineering excellence
But sit in the driver’s seat of one of those cars for a moment and consider the steering wheel
“How many nations are involved in manufacturing that simple part?” asks Matthias Weyer
dean of the School of Engineering at Pforzheim University
located in the southern Black Forest region of Germany
“The suppliers of the steering wheel and their sub-suppliers are spread over 15 countries… Engineers therefore need to be more globally positioned and networked worldwide.”
Francis College of Engineering students looking to gain that valuable international experience have many options from which they can choose through the university’s Study Abroad Office
That includes two programs with partner institutions in Germany: Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (H_DA) and Pforzheim
Dean Joseph Hartman of the Francis College of Engineering says that while every study abroad experience gives students a valuable opportunity to become immersed in new cultures
the programs in Germany are ideal for students looking to earn the maximum number of engineering credits toward their degrees
who visited Pforzheim in 2013 and collaborated with Weyer to help establish Engineers Made in Germany (EMIG)
a six-week program where students can earn nine credits by taking two engineering courses and one German language course (at beginner or refresher level)
schools are invited to participate in EMIG each year: Penn State University
“They put together a wonderful program that includes cultural sightseeing
and a great curriculum centered on automobile production,” Hartman says
“What better place to learn about building cool cars than Germany?”
EMIG runs this summer from May 18 to June 30
A half-dozen UMass Lowell students participate each year
a junior mechanical engineering major from Dunstable
He says it was “the best experience of my life
While Fernandez appreciated being able to earn six mechanical engineering technical elective credits and three arts and humanities credits while in Pforzheim
he also loved the opportunity to explore more of Europe
The program includes a four-day trip to Berlin
a three-day trip to Munich and several daylong excursions
Students also have three weekends to explore on their own
two places I’ve always wanted to go,” Fernandez says
“I doubt I will ever get another chance to experience as much of Europe and have as much fun as I did in those six weeks.”
Irini Billiri participated in the program in 2014
two years before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2016
“The six weeks I spent in Pforzheim will forever hold a place in my heart,” says Billiri
native who now works as a product test engineer at GE Healthcare in Westborough
“Being a student in another country was a very positive experience for me,” says Billiri
who adds that she was able to apply a lot of what she learned in Germany in her classes at UMass Lowell
is Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences
800,000-euro grant (about $950,000) from the German government to enhance relationships with five strategic partner institutions
UMass Lowell was chosen along with Penn State
the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Wisconsin-Stout
Students can participate in a four-week summer program (running this year from July 15 to Aug
a winter intersession program or a full semester program
the H_DA program combines engineering courses with a German language class
along with site visits in and around Darmstadt
a junior chemical engineering major from Lancaster
participated in H_DA’s summer program in 2016
He was even able to arrange a two-month internship in a chemical engineering research lab at the school before the program started
“It ended up being one of the best experiences of my life,” Langberg says
“Not only was I able to have this great experience abroad
but I was also able to gain real-world experience in my field of study
With more and more disruptive technologies coming onto the market that promise to change the world dramatically
Pforzheim’s Weyer says it’s more important than ever for engineers to have a global mindset
“We’re creating a foundation for future forms of cooperation,” Weyer says
“as we build mutual trust among institutions and friendships between people.”

Freedom of speech | Pavica Vojnović: Germany
40 Days for Life prayer group may pray near abortion organisation
German Federal minister for Family Affairs still plans to introduce censorship zones around abortion organisations
Pavica’s victory is a resounding win for freedom of assembly in Germany
Silent prayer gatherings in the vicinity of an abortion counseling facility are lawful and cannot be prohibited – so ruled a German court on 31 August 2022
This follows a previous ruling in which a lower court upheld prohibitions on prayer vigils on the public street near a Pro Familia abortion counseling facility
the leader of the 40 Days for Life group in Pforzheim
had challenged the ban on the grounds of the group’s right to freedom of religion
Prohibited from coming together to pray by the facility since 2019
the court has reaffirmed their right to gather peacefully to pray in the place of their choosing
was shocked in 2019 to hear that the local municipality had suddenly denied permission for her group to hold vigils near the pre-abortion advisory centre
around 20 people had gathered to pray for the women facing abortion
The vigils took place for 40 days– silently and peacefully
Despite Pavica applying for and being granted all the necessary permissions for their previous vigils
the municipality banned them from praying near the facility
Pavica and her group were not preventing anybody from entering the building
nor were they blocking the pavement in the surrounding area
The prayer vigils were peaceful throughout
When monitored by the police at the request of “Pro Familia”
the centre requested that the vigil be moved some distance away
which reaffirms freedom of assembly and other fundamental freedoms as the foundation of a free democracy
This is a clear victory not just for 40 Days for Life
but also for all concerned with the protection of fundamental human rights
The German people have the right to peaceful assembly and expression
on their public streets,” said Lidia Rieder
Your gift can support fundamental freedoms for Pavica and others like her across the world

Germany (24 August 2022) – Can authorities prohibit a silent prayer gathering on a public street in Pforzheim
This question will be addressed for the second time by the court on Thursday
a lower court ruled that prohibitions on silent prayer on the public street could remain
will be heard this Thursday by the Mannheim Administrative Court
Vojnović argues that banning her prayer group from praying “within sight” of an abortion counseling facility constitutes an egregious violation of fundamental freedoms
The group hopes the court will lift the ban
recognising their rights to freedom of religion
“What kind of society restricts prayer for vulnerable women and children
By prohibiting even silent prayer near an abortion counseling facility
the Pforzheim authorities have gone beyond what could be considered reasonable or proportionate
Whether or not people agree with the group’s views on the sanctity of life
everyone can support the fundamental rights to freedom of religion
the 40 Days for Life prayer group conducted a 40-day vigil
gathering in front of a Pro Familia building
Pro Familia is the German affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation
a global multi-billion-dollar abortion group
After Pro Familia employees asked the 40 Days for Life group to move to the other side of the road
A four-lane road then separated the group from the building
Pro Familia demanded that the gatherings be banned out of earshot and sight or banned completely
The city of Pforzheim followed suit in 2019
“I was shocked by the court’s decision
Every life is precious and deserves protection
It is incredibly saddening that we are prevented from prayerfully supporting vulnerable women and their unborn children
Our society needs to offer better support to mothers in difficult situations,” said Pavica Vojnović
who is supported by the Christian human rights organisation ADF International
Frankfurt upholds freedom for pro-life praying
The appeal follows a decision in favour of an adjacent 40 Days for Life prayer group in Frankfurt on 16 December 2021
The City of Frankfurt’s geographical and temporal restrictions on the pro-life meetings were deemed unlawful
the court affirmed that the law guarantees individuals the right to determine the place
Regarding the city’s argument for shielding members of the public from being confronted with unwanted messages
the court pointed out that “[t]here is no room in the given legal system for such protection against confrontation with other views that are not desired.” [translated]
“We welcome the court’s ruling in Frankfurt that protects the fundamental freedoms of speech
The people making an effort to protect the right to life should not have been prohibited from peacefully exercising these freedoms in the place of their choosing
We are hopeful that this ruling will set a positive example for cases such as Ms
Despite the court’s affirmation of freedom of expression
the federal German government is considering rolling out “censorship zones”—blanket bans on prayer and help services near abortion facilities—across Germany

A white rabbit that recalls Alice in Wonderland
Some other presumably film characters I didn’t recognise
They’re all in Dance Theatre Pforzheim’s Nutcracker and the Mouse King (Nussknacker und Mausekönig)
it does all make sense in what is a hugely enjoyable interpretation of E
Hoffman’s story that is told with lots of imagination
accompanied by the excellent Badisches Philharmonic directed by Michael Pichler
Artistic director and choreographer Guido Markowitz and co-librettist Thomaspeter Goergen take us to Konfitürenburg
described as “somewhere between Wonderland and Hogwarts,” a fairy tale palace where Princess Clara and her prince are celebrating their engagement at a Christmas party
Markowitz’s easy on the eye vocabulary is driven by contemporary dance but with balletic references thrown in alongside some natural everyday gesture and movement
a mysterious toy shop in a strange town and a cold forest
the choreography and narrative has pace and flows easily throughout
The White Rabbit is first seen as a stuffed toy of Clara’s but almost immediately reappears in the shape of the delightful
trying to make sure the evening will be perfect
She couldn’t have looked more happy and radiant in a lovely playful duet to what is often called the ‘Mirlitons music’ for her and the Prince
a giant sprig of mistletoe hangs from above but there’s no kiss as the celebrations are interrupted by the Mouse King and his mother
Camille Zany dived into the role of the Mouse Queen Mother with glee
fur-edged long coat and in true Carabosse-style
she glared at all and sundry before leading something of a fracas
at the end of which she turns the Prince into a wooden nutcracker
who she reckons would make a much better husband for Clara
here as in later fights standing a bit to the side
Clara manages to escape with Drosselmeyer (Eleonora Pennacchini) and the White Rabbit
now cleverly portrayed as a bunch of incompetent mafiosi as interested in posing as anything else
the Mouse Queen Mother didn’t seem to have much time for her followers
Zany giving them a wonderful ‘why am I lumbered with these idiots’ look
which allows Markowitz to give her a more maternal role
When the nutcracker doll gets broken in the fight
After the doll is repaired it comes to magical life only for another well-choreographed battle to ensue
Clara neatly dispatches the Mouse King’s mother
No messing around with a ballet slipper though
Two martial-arts-style kicks and a killer right hook is way more effective
She makes the dagger-sharp ice-cold snow crystals dance out of her wintery realm and kidnap Clara and the Nutcracker
Esther Bätschmann’s set and costume designs are excellent throughout but it’s in this chill-in-every-sense-of-the-word scene that she produces an unexpected ace
Not only is it an inspired piece of design but Isak Källman catches perfectly the ungainly way the animal walks
the Nutcracker is deceived and seduced by three false Claras
while the Mouse King tries to win Clara over to the Arabian Dance music
they can’t help but realise their suitors have tails
It’s just one of many occasions the familiar Tchaikovsky score is shifted around and repurposed
although some numbers so sometimes feel a little underpowered choreographically
the music usually used for the transformation scene for one
Clara and the Prince’s loyalty affirmed
there’s a fine solo for Durand Caulliez’ to the Spanish music
before a lovely grand duet in which Kim’s personality shone again in particular
Clara’s happiness spilling out across the footlights
Guido Markowitz’s Nutcracker and the Mouse King may be different but it’s a convincing telling that sends you away with a big grin
It not only captures fully the spirit of the story but has an ultra-happy end when all is forgiven
even the Mouse Queen Mother and the Mouse King forgiven
Disused public baths are being transformed into a new centre for creative businesses and start-ups
We hope to create an environment that will encourage creativity in this new centre
A historic building which used to accommodate a complex of public baths and wellness facilities in the southern German city of Pforzheim is being converted to provide office accommodation for the cultural and creative industries
Because of safety issues the art nouveau Emma-Jaeger-Bad in the building was closed down after it was found that it would be prohibitively expensive to rectify the spa’s problems
the decision was taken to convert the historic 3 000 m2 building into a business centre for start-ups
young entrepreneurs and people working in the creative industries
The converted building will house an exhibition and events hall
a workshop and co-working area with around 35 workplaces
20 offices as well as half a dozen meeting and seminar rooms
The conversion work involves preserving many of the original design features of the century-old historic spa building
Project manager Almut Benkert said that a large number of school leavers from a nearby high-school had expressed interest in renting space in the new centre
Pforzheim has historically had an important jewellery industry and it is expected that many of the businesses moving into the new centre will continue this tradition

Two free churches in Baden-Württemberg are under surveillance for hate speech against homosexuals and anti-democratic statements
The Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring the Protestant Free Church Riedlingen for over a year, PRO reports
The Baptist Church Reliable Word in Pforzheim has been under scrutiny for several weeks now
President of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution
told the Stuttgart State Parliament that the office knew for sure about “extremist statements” in both religious communities
An earlier presented report for the protection of the constitution reads that the “preacher with the main responsibility [for the Riedlinger community
ed] spreads political content and positions that undermine trust in democratic decision-making processes and state representatives and institutions in an anti-constitutional manner.” According to the authorities
preacher Jakob Tscharnte spoke of a “total vaccination war” during the Covid pandemic and called politicians “unjust and arbitrary rulers” who were controlled by “satanic powers.”
the preacher and his community are said to have parted ways after a conflict with another pastor of the congregation
The Baptist Church in Pforzheim is mainly criticised for its “massive devaluation of homosexuals” and its hostility to queers
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution accuses the church of hate speech for calling members of the LGBT community “dirt
it advocates the death penalty for homosexuals “because of the clear statement in Leviticus 20:13.” That Bible text reads that men who lie with each other should be put to death
is independent of the Federation of Protestant Free Churches in Germany
Urban says that his church is willing to submit to state authority because the Bible commands it
but adds that he will only do so “as long as the respective secular laws do not encourage us to sin.” In addition
Urban adds that he wants to “perform his task and unrestrictedly call sins and individual people by their names
Bube did not want to say whether the churches risked closure for their statements, Evangelical Focus reports

Transportation Design students at Germany's Pforzheim University displayed their work in the school's summer degree show held in July
The exhibition included work from graduating Diploma and Masters students
and exterior and interior projects by the 4th
The show was held in conjunction with the biennial International Design Forum at the Pforzheim Congress Center
Projects from the graduating Diploma students included:
Honda FlexSimon SebastianAn 'investigation on Order and Chaos
this project questions the unchanging archetype of the car as 'a closed box on four wheels'
The project looked at alternatives to conventional development techniques
and how a car can look when the whole purpose of the vehicle body is reappraised from the ground up
Dynamic metal surfaces are cut from flat sheet but cleverly formed to give the appearance of compound curves
Graffiti to Design - Transportation for a RebelFlorian FlatauLM-CM (Lamborghini Colourmachine) is aimed at revitalising the Lamborghini brand with a more rebellious character
A fictional scenario and character was developed as the basis for the concept
The LM-CM should bring colour back into the greyness of everyday life and symbolise the urge to find new paths
The Spirit of Prague - A car for the bohème of the 21st centuryJakob HirzelThis project takes its inspiration from the character of Prague and Bohemian culture
It combines this self-determined way of life with the aesthetics and the concept of a compact four-seater vehicle
The vehicle's architecture is based on a fully electric drivetrain
which means the proportions can change drastically from today's cars to offer better interior space
The design elements express a non-conformist character and the usage of innovative technologies
the side window on the right is able to display personally specified contents when parked
Pedestrians are able to interact with the digital contents via a special interface integrated in the glass surface
Datsun X-LinkBenjamin NawkaThis thesis project was developed and sponsored by the Yulon Nissan Design Center in Taiwan and introduces the first four door coupe in the compact class (C-segment) as well as reviving Datsun as a new lifestyle sub-brand of Nissan
Inspired by aircraft design and modern architecture
the design features winglets which integrate multiple functions such as DRL lights
cameras for the rear view and 'dead spots'
The sporty and dominant appearance is supported by a strong stance
defined surfacing and a mix of European and Asian design language
Featuring latest hybrid and entertainment technology and a chassis that adjusts to bad roads
this car is targeted at young-minded people who are seeking an affordable and attractive car
Speeding up SustainabilityJürgen JoseThe Kia Speed lightweight sports car merges the conflicting ideas of sustainability and sportiness
The keynote of the concept is: less components
This car shows that lightweight aesthetics can symbolize the pure 'fun to drive' idea
Driver and passenger are protected by a monocoque made from a sustainable bamboo composite material (the darker matte surfaces seen here under the lighter-colored glossy aero shell)
This cell is covered by a structure for ultimate stiffness
and all components of the vehicle can be plugged in to this structure
The exterior shell covers the monocoque for aesthetic and aerodynamic reasons
Electrified surfaces - AUDI 2W (to double you)Florian DobeAudi 2W aims at the intersection of two consumer target groups: 'Dinkys' and 'Lohas' - an affluent target group who wants to purchase prestige objects and with an interest in sustainability
Electric active polymers are used to allow reconfiguration of the vehicle proportions
The model shows the 'Dinky' mode - a two-seater coupé with a very busy form language and empty-standing wheels which reflects sporting driving
For the 'Lohas' mode areas of the outer skin transform so that the wheels become covered and the vehicle can transport another person
The car is transformed to a more protective
The wheels contain an electromagnetic drive each and electro-active steering
Only the outer rim and tyre rotates with the spokes connected to it around the otherwise rigid rim
a preacher of the Baptist Church Reliable Word prayed
the church is the object of a criminal investigation
On July 30, a preacher asked God to kill Lothar Gassmann, the theologian of the Pforzheim Bible Church. Not only did he ask for Gassmann's death, but he also requested that God would "break all his bones before he went to hell", PRO reports
The prayer was recorded on video and published on YouTube
According to SWR.de
the police have started an investigation against the Baptist Church Reliable Word
The case has been forwarded to the public prosecutor
Gassmann tells PRO that it is not the first time that the Baptist Church Reliable Word has attacked him and his congregation
this is the first time the theologian actually received a death threat from the congregation
It left him "shocked and trembling."
The conflict between the theologian and the Baptist church is based on a difference in teachings
the question of whether salvation can be lost and whether faith must produce good works
Gassmann can imagine that the Baptist Church Reliable Word will be banned in the future
He calls the group a "disgrace to all of Christianity"
he also "prays that its members will connect love and truth."
Since March, the public prosecutor in Germany has been investigating the founder of the Baptist Church Reliable Word, the American preacher Anselm Urban. He is suspected of hate speech. The church has repeatedly called for the death penalty for homosexual people, Jesus.de writes
the Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring the church since the end of June
The reason for this monitoring is also the calls for violence and hate speech against homosexuals

2003 - Transportation Design students at Germany's Pforzheim University displayed their work in the school's summer Transportation Design degree show in July
The Pforzheim course is one of the leading Transportation Design courses in Europe
an Isuzu-sponsored project by the 5th and 7th semester students
as well as work from students in the earlier stages of the diploma and masters courses
The graduating Diploma students were:Fabien Clottu
The graduating Masters students were:Chris Ebbert
Fabien Clottu presented a Mercedes sports coupe with unusual proportions for a Mercedes
that seek to give a dynamic and 'strong willed' character
"The idea was to design a Mercedes that could be used in a remake of a film such as 'Bullit'
This gave me the possibility to integrate the style elements and the atmoshere of this film in my concept."
Ilka Liebmann's 'Wasserlaüfer' is a vehicle for the road and on the water
using turbines in the rear wheels and an underbody design that creates a ground-effect air-cushion on land or sea
The vehicle is seen as bridging the gap between land and sea transport
Mario Majdandzic presented 'Oxygen': "The intention of this project was to make a new
alternative and eco-friendly drive-system functional and attractive for the client
I classified the cylindrical air tank as the essential and most recognisable design element
The ellipsoidal openings are both housings for the front and rear lamps as well as air pressure cartridge holders
Because of the modular and flexible fueling concept
this vehicle is extremely light when used in the city
Long-distance journeys are accomplished with two or more air pressure cartridges
The 'air-stations' are located below the earth surface
existing air pressure cartridges can be refilled with compressed air
additional cartridges loaded up and dispensable ones unloaded
The novel access concept consists of a divided horizontal frame
Daniel Keetmann presented 'Digital Sportiness' a drive-by-wire-interior for a sports car
there is greater flexibility in the placement of components
The instruments are bigger and set far forward from to the driver for better eye focus adaptation
The interior has a spaceframe structure with two independent cabins for passenger protection
The seats are fixed - only the steering wheel with its electromechanical force-feedback module can be adjusted
A multimedia unit projects an operating environment in the driver´s sight using a holographic panel
and the command system uses finger tracking technology
Chung-Won Kim proposed a personal sports aircraft
"My concept is based around the lying position of the pilot
which is intended to enhance the feeling of freedom in flying
The dream of flight was always connected with the idea of flying like a bird
so this position for the pilot is natural and quite logical
Oliver Samson's project reflects the idea that a human being and a car should melt together to create a perfect symbiosis
The visual appearence of both should fit together and underline the functional symbiosis
'Splendor' - the comic hero had a bad accident in his youth
The hero himself is the power source and makes the car drive
As soon as he connects himself to the car it starts to live
it actually becomes a part of the comic hero
The project shows in a rather abstract way that cars have to become much more individual in order to fulfill the customers needs
Andy Sugata proposed a Mercedes-Benz heavy truck
The concept features a modular engine system that slides forward out of the vehicle
Graduating Masters student Jung-Ho Jun proposed a Lotus sport-limousine
"The philosophy of Lotus is based on function and lightness
and I have tried to achieve the required volume and length of a four-seater vehicle
color harmony and contrasts to keep a light and sporty impression."
For the Isuzu-sponsored 'Supertruck' project the 5th semester students designed exterior proposals
First semester Masters student presented an ultra-light aircraft exterior
while the second semester Masters students showed interior proposals
a lightweight sports vehicle designed for both driving and flying enthusiasts
The ultra-light aircraft is easily converted to exciting road transport - with both vehicles minimal in construction to maximise fun
The pilot's position also intensifies the experience
The concept closely follows that of the Super 7 - a track machine that you can drive to the track - the LSV concept is an aircraft that you can drive to the airfield
and different wings and engines could be used to customise the vehicles performance on the road or in the air
The 4th semester students presented a Microcar project sponsored by Smart

The German Baptist Church in Pforzheim has been the centre of controversy since it was discovered that they believe that gay people deserve the death penalty
Other churches distance themselves from the statements and call for criminal charges
“We believe that homosexuality is a sin and a shame that God punishes with the death penalty”, the website of the Baptists in Pforzheim reads
The believers base this view on several Bible texts
In a letter to Pforzheimer Zeitung
pastor Anselm Urban explains that Leviticus clearly says that men who lie together should be put to death
He points out that the illness of AIDS proves that God condemns gay people
as it is “almost exclusively transmitted by sodomites.” According to the Baptist pastor
introducing the death penalty for homosexual people would be “the most effective way to eradicate AIDS” as well
The state is responsible for enforcing the death penalty for homosexual people
The bold statements from the Pforzheim Baptist Church have led to much consternation and outrage in Germany
Other Christians and church representatives were quick to distance themselves from the Church in Pforzheim
The Protestant state bishop from Baden, Heike Springhart said that “such inciting and discriminatory statements violate human dignity.” That is reported by Stuttgarter Zeitung
the statements that incite and motivate violence contradict the message of the Bible
the Baptist Federation of Protestant Free Churches in Germany distanced itself from Pforzheim
it stated that “the sect in Pforzheim is not related to the Federation of Protestant Free Churches
The demand for the death penalty for homosexuals is completely absurd and extremely inhuman
Protestant church leader Christiane Quicke has even called upon the public prosecutor's office to investigate the Baptist Church in Pforzheim, Katholisch.de reports
She has asked the prosecutor to check the community because of “queer hostile and anti-Semitic hate speech

Transport design students at Pforzheim university have exhibited their final major projects for the summer exhibition
featuring some adventurous solo projects in amongst the sponsored semesters
While we will focus on the MA students’ projects
there was also a sponsored project for the BA course with Changan
wherein students had to combine an SUV with a sport
There was plenty of variety and the standard for a BA course was high
so you can find a quick look at those projects on this page
The first and second semesters of the MA course – the former an exteriors module and the latter focused on interiors – were set a brief by Maserati
dubbed ‘Bipolar,’ in which they had to combine luxury
All these projects were exhibited via an animation featuring a CAD model
You can pick through those in the links to the right
along with the third-semester MA Thesis students’ works as well
Song devised an interior concept for someone who plays wheelchair rugby
Players of this most brutal of sports can place their chair next to a reclined seat
as well as adding extra seat bases that move along magnetic rails
to make this open plan interior configurable
with an interior concept built around a central two-seat spire which can be raised on a robotic arm by up to 3m
The point of this is to give a sensation of flying above the ground
with a feeling of openness and connection to the environment
The rest of the model is minimalist and meant to be aerodynamic
Allenberg’s project is essentially a mobile rowing machine
The bike is propelled either by the rider sliding fore and aft on top of it
The rider can charge the battery and then be transported the rest of the way autonomously once they’ve worn themselves out from all that healthy exercise
This project is aimed at people who enjoy water sports
The vehicle’s central section (in highlighter green) is hinged at the front and can become a vertical cubicle to use as the user sees fit
The vehicle is carefully weighted at each end to keep it stable once the centre of it is standing up at the nose
Huttenlocher’s two-seat SUV integrates a pair of custom-designed folding bicycles into sail-like vertical slots in such a way that they seemingly disappear
The bike itself has a rear wheel that uses the chainring mechanism to swing forwards and save space
This one-person concept combines the car with the sport of running
The standing-height module includes an air filter to protect one’s lungs from traffic fumes
while a cinema-style fold-out seat allows for some rest and recovery
The module could conceivably sit on an EV chassis
Seems like a missed opportunity for some Martini Racing stripes
Berge’s take on augmenting running with a vehicle involves the user running inside a hub-less front wheel to propel themselves
a pair of wings initially act like skates at low speeds
before lifting up to use airflow to hold up the long tail
A compartment inside the vehicle lets you recline and relax
It is envisaged that these vehicles would be raced against each other in cities
The USP of this project is its claim to effectively have an infinite range
Each wheel hub is its own self-contained electric AV
which connect to the main chassis to drive the car – but if the battery level is too low in one or all of the hubs
they can detach from the vehicle (when stationary
of course) and whizz off to a charging point while freshly-charged ones appear to take their place
Some complex background communications system(s) would be needed to coordinate all of this
Less complicated is that a motor hub can double as an electric unicycle
Regardless of what armchair pundits tell you
As it experiences the same shift that road cars are (albeit a few years behind the curve)
Ryndin wants to keep the essence of fast driving alive
with a vehicle that either lets you recline at the rear end

during which transformation the vehicle gets shorter for better direction changes
Döffinger’s combination of driving and diving involves integrated sea scooters behind each seat
they act as a helmet-sized windscreen and HUD over the heads of each occupant (although they can still share information with each other via the central dividing touchscreen)
They can then detach to either act as electric sea scooters
or fitted with an air tank to work as a very long
This vehicle can be combined with any sport the user fancies
by way of app-like pyramids the user buys separately to plug into triangular slots at the back
The car then transforms accordingly to add app-specific functions
Similar configurability is found at each corner
with data screens on the wheel faces and modular tyres comprising multiple slide-on rings
with a light ring in the middle of them for night visibility
Badziong’s ‘WiSu’ concept is made for windsurfing
actually detaches from the car to become the sail for a board that’s slotted into the rear bumper
Above the boards is an area for extra equipment that doubles as a bench
open-plan interior with a large screen front and centre
creating a two-seater with a fabric-like top surface that ‘unzips’ to reveal the seats
Each seat tilts during cornering to add to the feeling of kayaking
while that flexible top surface can also rise up like the roof of a camper van
Liu’s electric AV has a body that can separate from the chassis for use in the water
or alternatively just act as an area to sunbathe
To bring back the brutal thrill of Roman chariot racing
the black pods in the back of Faulhaber’s vehicle pull out
to become electric motorcycles for use on an appropriate track (the rear end sits on two concealed inner wheels when the ‘chariots’ have taken the drive wheels away)
Weigand’s ‘Supracon’ tackles the thorny issue of battery longevity
the electric two-seater can connect to a monorail system and draw power from that
avoiding use of its own onboard battery until you’re back on the road nearer your destination
Porath’s project is the intersection between a supercar and a powerboat racer
the body slides off the chassis and what were previously active air rudders at the back become
A pair of turbines provide propulsion in the water
Demirci’s ‘Vacation’ project is inspired in part by the loophole-exploiting Subaru BRAT
with its rear-facing jump seats behind the cabin
Less like the old pickup is the fact the chassis is comprised of two halves
the rear of which twists around to turn from a covered rear seat area to an open-top sunbathing deck
a dashboard rises out of the floor when required

German pro-life groups may continue their prayer next to abortion clinics
A court has ruled that this practice is legal
Pro-life organisations are free to organise prayer vigils where, when and how they want. That is the content of the verdict of the Sixth Senate of the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig last week, Die Tagespost reports
the judges confirmed the earlier ruling of the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg
The last verdict is a new development in a case that has been running since 2019
the German city of Pforzheim banned prayer vigils within view of a pregnancy counselling centre
Pro Familia provided pregnant women with certificates that enabled them to have an abortion
The pro-life “40 Days for Life” group protested with vigils at the clinic for 40 days twice a year. According to the city, pregnant women who came to the clinic were in an exceptional psychological situation and had to endure a “gauntlet run”, PRO reports
they ordered the pro-life group to quit their vigils
the Baden-Württemberg Administrative Court ruled that they were allowed to pray in front of the clinic and that the ban by the city council was illegal
The judge ruled that freedom of assembly can only be restricted if there is a risk to public safety
The judges do not allow an appeal of their verdict

which supported the pro-life group in their legal struggles
“The court in Leipzig has once again made clear that peaceful prayer vigils cannot be banned
In view of the clear findings of the court
the federal government would be well advised to abandon its plans to restrict fundamental rights in the vicinity of abortion organisations massively,” stated Dr Felix Böllmann
Director of European advocacy for ADF International
According to Idea
the ruling also calls into question the plans of the federal government to establish “censorship zones” around abortion clinics
