the Indian managed to throw the spear 57.30m
Julia Ulbricht of Germany was second among the six competitors with a 51.53m throw
Annu Rani managed 55.81m during the qualification of the women’s javelin throw event and failed to make the cut for the final
The cutoff mark to qualify for the final was established at 61.08m
At the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, Annu Rani threw the javelin 62.92m to win the gold medal.
Annu Rani is expected to be in action next at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru later this month.
Successful international matches from Lilien’s perspective
In “Lilies Across the Board” we report on Isac Lidberg with the Swedish national team and Fabian Nürnberger with the Bulgarian national team
the traditional SV Darmstadt 98 team presented a well-filled check for a good cause and the Lilien fan team can look forward to a brilliant week
The Lilien striker first put SV Darmstadt 98 on the road to victory with his goal against Hertha BSC
then he was quickly called up for the Swedish senior national team
And then he celebrated his debut for his home country
Lidberg came on as a substitute for four-time goalscorer Viktor Gyökeres in the 89th minute of Sweden’s 6-0 win against Azerbaijan – and thus made his debut in Sweden’s uniform
it was an enormously successful international break for the Swedish national team
National coach Jon Dahl Tomasson’s team also won 2-1 against Slovakia in the previous group game of the UEFA Nations League – Lidberg was not used in this game
The Scandinavians secured first place in Group 1 of League C and promotion to League B of the Nations League
Will Fabian Nürnberger become a long-time favourite for the Bulgarian national team
There are a total of five international matches on the Darmstadt player’s resume with a total playing time of 450 minutes – nothing more is possible
Nürnberger was also on the field for the full distance in the two international matches against Luxembourg and Belarus
His team won the duel with Luxembourg 1-0 away
and the Bulgarians then picked up another important point at home against Belarus
With the four points gained from the last two group games of the UEFA Nations League
Bulgaria landed in second place behind Northern Ireland in Group 3 of League C
qualified for two playoff games next March
in which Bulgaria is playing for possible promotion to League B of the Nations League
the traditional team of SV Darmstadt 98 auctioned off their special jerseys
which they wore in the duel with the legends of FC Barcelona
which the traditional Lilien team handed over to the support association of the Darmstadt Children’s Hospital Princess Margaret e.V
last Friday (November 15th) – the check was handed over to Gabi Hoffmann (chairwoman of the support association) and Dr
Sebastian Becker (Senior Medical Director of the Children’s Clinic)
three wins and 18 goals scored as well as the best offensive in the competition with a total of 59 goals this season: What a brilliant week for the SV Darmstadt 98 fan team
the “zwote Zwote” initially won on last Wednesday evening (November 13th) against FTG Pfungstadt II furiously with 9:1
At the weekend (November 17th) the league leader of VFR Eberstadt was a guest at Ostendstrasse in Pfungstadt
And there too the SVD impressively showed its skills and won 5:3
Coach Andreas Degenhardt’s team also triumphed on Tuesday evening (November 19th) with a 4-2 away win at the second representative of Germania Eberstadt
Particularly worth mentioning: Deniz Guellueoglu scored a brace against both Eberstadt teams and was recorded as a goalscorer three times against Pfungstadt
the Lilies have a sniff of the promotion places
the “zwote Zwote” is currently in third place in the district league table – just one point behind second-placed FC Ober-Ramstadt II
Things won’t continue for the people of Darmstadt until December
In a home game on Ostendstrasse in Pfungstadt they welcome the SKG Nieder-Beerbach
Kick-off on Sunday (December 1st) is at 5:30pm

they were defeated shortly before the final whistle due to a late goal
This decisive result was displayed on the scoreboard at the Merck Stadium after the final whistle
SV 98 finally suffered a decisive defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday afternoon (May 3)

who beautifully converted a free kick to make it 1-1

On an historic day for New Zealand middle-distance running James Preston erased the 62-year-old national 800m record of Sir Peter Snell in Pfungstadt
Germany and George Beamish climbed to number two on the all-time New Zealand mile lists – and within 0.01 of the 42-year-old national record of Sir John Walker - at the Eugene Diamond League
Preston recorded a stunning 1:44.04 in Pfungstadt
Germany to comfortably dip below the Olympic entry standard mark for Paris and advance his career into a new realm
In an outstanding display of middle-distance running
the 27-year-old Wellington-based athlete claimed a dominant victory from fellow Kiwi Brad Mathas – wiping 0.83 from his previous PB set at the 2024 Jennian Homes New Zealand Track & Field Championships in Wellington in March
Preston’s mark set at the Merck Running Gala was also comfortably below the Olympic entry standard of 1:44.70
Sir Peter Snell’s mark had been the longest standing New Zealand athletics record in the books
His 1:44.3 was set on a grass track in Christchurch back in 1962 for what was a then world record mark
On a memorable day for New Zealand middle-distance running
Mathas clocked 1;45.80 – within 0.05 of his lifetime best to claim second
An elated Preston said: “I feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction and relief
I was nervous about trying to run the qualifier because opportunities can be hard to come by
so to be able to run (the Olympic entry standard) takes a weight off my shoulders
It is also really satisfying that my team and I can put together the plan and execute it
“I had a really strong pacemaker organised and the plan was to go through 400m in 50.5 and 600m in 1:16 because that would set me up well to get under the qualifying mark
We hit 400m in 50.1 and I then just had to keep rolling with whatever I had
“The (Olympic) entry standard is the main thing for me with the record being a bonus
Everything has been geared up in terms of trying to qualify
but to be able to do that makes our plan for the next couple of months a wee bit easier and less stressful around the build up
“This performance sets me up for the next couple of months
We aren’t as focused on running the standard right now
so hopefully I’ll get in some more competitions and run a wee bit faster
he did so much for middle-distance running in New Zealand the best way to honour what he did was to try and better it
I’m hoping that someone will come along and break my record one day and better what I’ve done
George Beamish produced an outstanding run in the Bowerman Mile to place eighth in 3:49.09 – within 0.01 of the national record set by Sir John Walker in Oslo in 1982
won by Great Britain’s world 1500m champion Josh Kerr in a world-leading mark of 3:45.34
Beamish stuck his task well and also gained an Olympic entry standard mark for the 1500m
The 27-year-old Kiwi and World Indoor 1500m champion has been selected to compete in the 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics but has Olympic entry standard marks in three events - the 1500m
the other Kiwi in action at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene
finished fifth in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 21.33m
Joe Kovacs of the US claimed victory in a monster world leading throw of 23.13m

From 4 to 12 September, the Rehberghalle in Roßdorf, Germany, was transformed into a musical stage. Under the direction of Broadway Entertainment e.V., young people from the local area staged a rendition of Jekyll & Hyde. Lighting Designers, Benedikt Vogel and Kilian Scheiding relied on Cameo by Adam Hall Group OPUS
supplied by Pfungstadt-based MKM Event Show Technik
has been staging impressive show productions for quite a few years now
recently celebrated their musical premiere in the Rehberghalle
“The location itself is one of the biggest challenges,” revealed Deputy Technical Manager and Light Operator
“The Rehberghalle is an ordinary sports hall that we have to turn into a musical theatre every year
the hall has a restricted height of just 5.60m.”
After the production technology team’s positive experience with Cameo OPUS S5 spot moving heads during their previous production
Scheiding and Vogel were also able to rely on the OPUS X PROFILE for Jekyll & Hyde
“The OPUS X is used as a front and side light and delivers great results when used as an effect light from behind,” said Scheiding
In accordance with the dark overall atmosphere of the story and the low-key style with its stark contrasts
the lighting designers mainly immersed the stage in a desaturated cool white light from the Cameo F Series
The F2 D Fresnel spotlight was the daylight specialist here
provided both cool white and red accents to the stage lighting

A judge has ruled that mothers and fathers can try to recover wages they lost from staying home to take care of their kids
The difficulty of securing daycare varies drastically country by country
This decision came in response to three mothers who filed a lawsuit declaring that authorities neglected to create the necessary daycare slots required by the 2013 ruling
Because the mothers couldn’t find a child-care center with any openings in their hometown of Leipzig
their lawyers argued that they were unable to return to work after giving birth
Chief Justice Ulrich Herrmann ruled in the mothers’ favor on October 20
wouldn't have damages to recoup because a lack of child-care availability hasn't resulted in a loss of wages.)
but it follows as a natural development from Germany’s long history of offering governmental support for families
and its more recent history of encouraging mothers’ paid employment
looks crazy in its own right when compared to much of the globe
the lowest public commitment to caregiving
and highest rates of maternal and child poverty of any western industrialized country
including extremely generous maternity leave (up to three years)
generous tax breaks to single-earner families
and public healthcare and pension systems that automatically granted insurance rights to an economically inactive wife of a working husband
these policies encouraged women to stay home and care for young children
and the government provided mothers with material supports to make this possible
But since the mid-2000s, Germany has been forced to reconsider this breadwinner-homemaker model. The country confronts a low fertility rate
and gender-equality mandates from the European Union
How might a nation tackle these three related dilemmas
This means that mothers alone cannot be responsible for childrearing
Along these lines, in 2007, Germany initiated a major shift toward a new “sustainable family policy” model that promotes mothers’ continuous employment
invests heavily in early childhood education services rather than giving cash to families
and generally endorses a dual-earner family model—a striking break from the previous policy regime
Whether the intentions stem from pronatalist
the court decision in favor of the Leipzig mothers signals to German mothers that they can and should be able to return to work after giving birth
and the government has a duty to facilitate their entry back into the labor market
and giving parents the legal right to sue if they can’t access this service
it sends the message that the answer to “who should care for children?” is
The lack of regulations for child-care standards means that wealthier families are able to provide safer
higher quality environments for their children than lower-income families
and is smaller in countries where cultural attitudes are more favorable towards maternal employment
Universal child care helps resolve the free rider problem
Countries like Germany socialize the cost of childrearing so that mothers alone don’t bear the brunt of the responsibility
a new income-tax deduction for child-care expenses (something that won’t help the neediest families) and paid leave for mothers but not fathers
are nevertheless a long way from having the legal right to sue for lost wages like their German counterparts
But should Germany’s efforts pay off in the form of a healthier economy
Americans may want to look to its example and see what can be replicated
What they’ll find is not just good wages and a strong education system
but also a cultural belief that when women work
it can’t also be solely their job to raise the country’s children

The renowned German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche proclaimed
initiating a discourse that has since influenced various aspects of thought and culture
especially in Nietsche’s homeland of Germany
it also led to a variety of interpretations and discussions on the role of faith in society
an article in The Guardian referred to Germany as “the most Godless place on earth,” highlighting the lasting influence of Nietzsche’s ideas on the topic of atheism
and just about all the other isms you can think of have been fast on the rise
with religion sadly on the verge of becoming outdated
How ironic is it, then, that Islam Ahmadiyyat is spreading through this land of irreligiosity faster than ever
The recent tour of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa bears testimony to this
five grand mosques have been opened and inaugurated in five different towns
These mosques opening in “the most Godless place on earth” is nothing short of a miracle
We present a brief report on the five mosque inaugurations that took place on this recent trip
Huzooraa inaugurated the Mubarak Mosque in the German town of Florstadt
This mosque is part of the 100 mosques scheme that Germany Jamaat is pursuing
Huzooraa laid its foundation stone in a ceremony that took place on 18 October 2015
In his address at the inauguration ceremony
Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa expressed immense gratitude to Allah the Exalted for the occasion
He spoke on the topic of the mosque as a symbol of peace and religious freedom
Huzooraa stated that Islam is often misunderstood in the West due to the actions of extremists
he clarified that Islam promotes peace and security
citing the Holy Quran’s teachings that permit warfare only for defence and to establish religious freedom for all
Turning his attention to the mosque’s location
Huzooraa pointed out its significance
The mosque is situated in a commercial area and serves as a call to God amid worldly transactions
He emphasised the role of the mosque in maintaining a spiritual balance in a commercial environment
Huzooraa warned that the world is rapidly moving towards destruction due to materialism
He affirmed that mosques teach the importance of caring for the needy and orphans and called for fulfilling the rights of Allah as well as His creation.
He concluded the address by outlining the objectives for building mosques
He prayed that the Ahmadis in the area might become more active in spreading the teachings of peace and love after the construction of this mosque and fulfilling both the rights of God and His creation
Those in attendance included guests from various sections of society
with two mayors and a member of the provincial assembly speaking at the event
Huzooraa inaugurated the Sadiq Mosque in the town of Karben
The foundation stone was laid by Huzooraa on 7 June 2014
Upon arrival for the inauguration ceremony
Huzooraa also unveiled a plaque and led everyone in Zuhr and Asr prayers
During his address at the inauguration ceremony
Huzooraa said he extends his gratitude not only to Allah but also to the local people and the municipal administration
for it is our religious obligation to express such thanks in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa. While mentioning local opposition to the mosque
there was a degree of resistance to the mosque
which might have been partially justified given the negative representation of Islam by some Muslims globally
some of those sceptics subsequently became allies upon witnessing the true Islamic conduct of local Ahmadis
we owe a debt of gratitude to the government for upholding the freedom of religion
He said this liberty has enabled numerous Ahmadi Muslims to settle here and practise their faith without impediment
thankful to the government for providing sanctuary to those who are persecuted for their beliefs worldwide
Huzooraa also emphasised that we should always strive to fulfil the rights of others and how this is incumbent on every Muslim
Huzooraa also talked about women’s rights in particular and also the sanctity of places of worship in Islam
Huzooraa prayed that the mosque may serve as a platform for imparting the authentic teachings of Islam to the people
He also prayed that God enables all of humanity to coexist in harmony
and duly fulfil the obligations of His worship
Huzooraa inaugurated the Nasir Mosque in the town of Waiblingen
He officially inaugurated the mosque by unveiling a plaque and leading all those present in silent prayer
after which he inspected the new premises and planted a tree outside the mosque
A special reception was then held in the Waiblingen Town Hall
dignitaries and local neighbours of the mosque
introduced the mosque after which honourable guests spoke about their appreciation of the mosque and the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
Huzooraa spoke about how a key purpose of building mosques is to create a peaceful and harmonious society around them
Huzooraa highlighted the way in which Islam emphasises the equality of all people
“The fact that we have people of different races and ethnicities is all for the purpose of one’s identity
The Holy Quran states that nations and people of different races are there in order to help you to recognise each other
Once you understand this value as a human being
many of the problems of society will die away.”
Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa also discussed the current state of the world and the problems we face in this day and age
the value of education in creating a peaceful society
and the value Islam places upon caring for one’s neighbour
“If you treat all these people like your neighbours
it will create peace and tranquillity within society and it will lead to the progress of your nations
This is not only beneficial at an individual level
rather it helps the country to further develop too.”
Huzooraa inaugurated the Noor Mosque in Frankenthal
Daud Majoka Sahib shared some sentiments on his behalf and also mentioned the history of Frankenthal
He added that it was very pleasing to see that the people of the city appeared to be kind-natured and not such who would needlessly raise opposition
Various others also took to the stage and expressed their views and remarks
including the State Secretary for the Ministry of Health and members of Parliament
Huzooraa began his address by thanking the council
He said that the expression of gratitude is a religious duty
as Islam teaches that one who is not grateful to other people cannot be grateful to Allah the Almighty
The rights of neighbours were outlined by Huzooraa with special reference to the Holy Quran and narrations of the Holy Prophetsa
The world is in dire need of peace and tolerance
explained Huzooraa to all those in attendance
The world is heading towards a major war and injustice is on the rise
Justice must be established on a global scale if the world wishes to avert impending calamity
love and harmony instead of hatred and warfare
“The wars taking place these days can have frightening consequences if they continue
the weaponry that can be used in the wars is such that will cripple our future generations
and children will be born with severe disabilities
Millions of people will be wiped off the face of the earth
we must strive and make efforts to establish peace
and to draw the attention of our governments towards this.”
Huzooraa concluded his address by urging the Ahmadis who reside in the area to propagate the message of Islam Ahmadiyyat more than ever before
to not only the city but the whole country
Huzooraa inaugurated the Bait-ul-Khabeer mosque in Pfungstadt
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pfungstadt has a history that dates back to 1999
the Community gathered for prayers in a rented prayer centre
there was an aspiration to have a dedicated mosque for the Community
it was announced in 2013 that the Community had received official permission to construct a mosque in the German town of Pfungstadt
The Community’s dream began to take concrete shape in 2016 when Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad
Khalifatul Masih Vaa laid the foundation for the mosque
the construction of the mosque was finally completed
is a striking architectural feat with a total area of 1,125 square metres
It is designed to accommodate up to 320 individuals for prayers and features both a dome and a minaret
In a symbolic gesture that reflects the mosque’s vision of peace and unity
the street where the mosque is located was renamed “Friedensstrasse,” which translates to “Peace Street.”
Pfungstadt had the honour of welcoming Huzooraa for the official inauguration of the Khabeer Mosque on 11 September 2023
marking a significant chapter in the history of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in the town
the recent tour of Huzooraa to Germany is a grand testament to how Islam Ahmadiyyat is spreading the lands of irreligiosity and winning the hearts and minds of countless souls in the process

GERMANY - JULY 11: A little girl paints in a Kindergarten (Kita) on July 11
According to numbers which were published by German Family minister Kristina Schroeder
the country reached a family-friendly milestone in boosting the number of child care places
More than 800,000 creche spots for under-three-year-olds would be available in the year starting August 1
surpassing a government target by about 30,000
(Photo by Thomas Lohnes/Getty Images)The House on Tuesday passed a bill that would require anyone employed by the Defense Department military personnel
defense contractors and civilian employees to report cases of suspected child abuse on military installations to state child protective service agencies in addition to reporting such suspected crimes up their chain of command
The legislation was approved by voice vote and sent to the Senate for consideration
the bill is named for five-year-old Talia Williams who was tortured and beaten to death by her father — an active-duty Army specialist at the time — and step-mother in 2005 at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii
government in 2008 for what she argued were failures by military officials to report suspicions that her daughter was being abused
Williams was awarded $2 million in a settlement last May
The Defense Department had signed a memorandum of understanding with the State of Hawaii in 2013 that said the state's child welfare services agency was "primarily" responsible for handling instances of child abuse on military bases
But DOD also has its own parallel system for child and domestic abuse investigations
Suspected cases of child abuse are reported to military police or the installation's Family Advocacy Program
which work in coordination to identify and investigate instances of child abuse
Those mandated by law to report suspected child abuse are usually professionally involved with children
found that various individuals failed to report Talia's case
and an employee with the Family Advocacy Program – all covered by the House bill
speaking about Talia's case on the Senate floor last June
said information about the abuse never reached the Army provost
whom she said was the only person required to report to the state's child welfare services
groups like the Department of Defense Education Activity and military law enforcement are required to report to local and state child protective services
a defense official said that the Pentagon has previously recommended passage of legislation to improve communication between the Defense Department and states' child protective service agencies
introduced the bill in the House last November
Both are active-duty military officers in the Hawaii Army National Guard; Gabbard serves as a military police major and Takai serves as a lieutenant colonel
Citing the 29,000 cases of child abuse and neglect in the military in the past decade
Gabbard said on the House floor Tuesday that her bill creates the same protections for military children that exist for any other child
Rates of child abuse and neglect in the military
though half the rate typically seen in the civilian population
according to a 2014 memorandum from Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Rosemary Williams
Incidents of child abuse and neglect rose 10 percent in 2014
Sakrisson said via email that it is Defense Department policy to not comment on pending legislation
director of government relations for the National Military Families Association
said many child abuse cases involve service members with multiple combat deployments
It is necessary to make sure resources are available to address the effects of combat experience
Hruska said the focus now should be on preventing the system from failing any more children
"We need to make sure children have the best protection possible
We need to make sure potential reports are not being ignored or falling through the cracks," she said
I can say I hope (a case like Talia’s) never happens again."

While the Army's intense public attention has been focused on suicides
domestic violence and sex assaults in the ranks
Liyah is part of an epidemic of child abuse inside the Army so under the radar that even top brass were unaware of its scope and an alarming spike in cases
Nearly 30,000 children have suffered abuse or neglect in Army homes over the past decade
torture and starvation claimed the lives of 118 Army children
More than 1,400 children were subjected to sexual abuse
\"The Army put a lot of focus on domestic violence because there's been a lot of political pressure,\" said Dr
social work programs manager at Army Medical Command
\"There hasn't been a concurrent interest in child abuse.\"
John Campbell said he was not aware of the extent of the epidemic
When the Army suspects child abuse or neglect
\"we'll investigate and prosecute and try to make sure we have the right program in place to take care of the soldiers and their families and do what's right there.\"
Of the 29,552 cases of child abuse and neglect in active-duty Army families from 2003 through 2012
The Army's rate of child abuse was 4.5 cases per 1,000 children for 2011
The civilian rate was 27.4 per 1,000 children
according to the Children's Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services
But the number of Army cases has spiked 28 percent between 2008 and 2011
while the number of civilian cases has increased by 1.1 percent
These cases represent the neglect and abuse taking place throughout the Army
in families that live on and off the installation:
await trial on charges in connection with the rape and murder of their 23-month-old son
John Jackson and his wife were indicted in April on 17 counts of child abuse for allegedly depriving their three foster children of food and water
Roderick Elam was sentenced in March to 32 years in prison for beating his 2-month-old daughter Harmone'e to death in December 2011
Naeem Williams is charged in connection with the torture death of his daughter
has pleaded guilty to murder and will testify against her husband
The Army's child abuse and neglect epidemic is tragic and rapidly getting worse: Last year's 3,698 reported cases of abuse and neglect represented a 40 percent increase over the 2,626 in 2009
The causes are not fully explained or understood anywhere
but the spike in abuse and neglect cases dovetails with the grind of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a policy of allowing people with criminal backgrounds into the ranks
The Army offers a number of programs providing support resources to Army parents under stress
but officials concede difficulties in preventing abuse cases
\"We have problems identifying them before it becomes a tragedy,\" Robichaux said
troops and others in the community missed significant evidence that children were in danger in several cases reviewed by Army Times
Two of those cases resulted in the death of the child
a child was starved to death over a five-month period while he
his mother and sister were living illegally in Army family housing at Fort Sill
day care employees called military police to report that a 5-year-old girl had marks on her body that looked like abuse
But an Army doctor who examined her told police he was \"98 to 99 percent\" sure it wasn't abuse
She was beaten to death by her soldier father four months later
The 2009-12 spike coincides with the end of combat in Iraq
a drawdown in Afghanistan and the return of tens of thousands of troops to their homes
Some soldiers who harmed children may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress
But child abuse cases plagued the Army even as the wars were at their peaks and stateside posts were practically ghost towns
The stress on spouses left to deal alone with domestic issues often was at the root of child abuse cases
Some of the problem of abusive troops in the ranks owes to the fact that the Army sometimes either does a poor job vetting those seeking to join or is denied access to criminal histories that would help weed out undesirables
Joseph Allsop entered the Army despite a juvenile record for child molestation
a record the Army didn't learn about until years later
about 10 to 15 states will not allow access to juvenile records during routine background checks of recruits
Recruiters are forced to rely on their questioning of potential recruits about previous scrapes with the law
and Army officials were not allowed to review his criminal record as a juvenile
A spokesman for Recruiting Command said a person with a sex offender conviction would not have been allowed to enter the Army
Allsop is now serving two life sentencesin a Texas prison for sexually assaulting and murdering his 5-month-old daughter
Ray Odierno acknowledged that the Army's background checks are often incomplete
\"Background checks are done,\" Odierno said in response to a Senate Armed Services Committee question June 4 about preventing sexual assault
\"But the ability to identify sexual offenders is certainly not 100 percent right now
We have to do a better job of doing that.\"
Although his testimony was about sexual assault
the Army knew the soldiers' troubled backgrounds and still allowed them into the Army
the Army enrolled 75,197 soldiers on waivers
more than half of them related to illegal conduct in civilian life
34,338 soldiers were allowed into the ranks in spite of records that included felony arrests and convictions
Army officials refuse to say whether any of the soldiers involved in child abuse and neglect cases were admitted on waivers
the Army began establishing child and behavioral health centers at major installations
They are now at five bases; the plan is to establish them at all large bases by 2017
\"The Army has a number of programs aimed at helping soldiers at home,\" said Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond Chandler
\"Military family life consultants don't just focus on post-traumatic stress and individual soldiers
they also have opportunities for family members
We've also got child and family assistance centers
and new parents support programs that are available for soldiers.\"
The Army has also started the School Behavioral Health Program
operating at Army schools at eight major Army installations
The Army has also created a parenting course
providing specialists who will teach young families how to cope with newborns
all Army hospitals are not to discharge newborn babies unless the parents watch a video about shaken baby syndrome and aregiven a tip card: \"Tips on Soothing a Crying Baby.\"
is that many soldiers don't get such briefings
\"either because they were not in the Army when the child was born or the perpetrator was not the biological father and therefore not present when such instruction could have been given.\" Instead
sometimes soldiers \"use violence to get the child to stop crying,\" he said
And Army leaders say they are reluctant to require soldiers to take advantage of them
despite the Army's inclination to order soldiers to special classes for all sorts of reasons
Soldiers have to take an Army motorcycle safety course before they can ride on post
\"We do have mandatory training for motorcycles
and we still have people who choose not to obey that training and unfortunately sometimes that causes their death,\" Chandler said
\"You have to have that balance between a person's right to have a family if they choose to and the actions and how they live their lives,\" he said
Chandler said it's key that Army noncommissioned officers and other leaders get closer to their soldiers to recognize any stresses they may be under and to recognize behaviors that may be unhealthy to them
\"I expect leaders to be engaged with soldiers' lives,\" Chandler said
\"Leadership is responsible for knowing what's going on in their soldiers' lives and that means something more than understanding what size hat and how they did on the [physical training] test.\"
He expects leaders to know where their soldiers live and to drive past their homes
\"If you drive past their house and they've got a couple of washing machines and a car on blocks,\" said Chandler
\"there's probably a problem and you've got to start asking some questions.\"■
\"We need to make sure children have the best protection possible
We need to make sure potential reports are not being ignored or falling through the cracks,\" she said
I can say I hope (a case like Talia’s) never happens again.\"
It's been a big week for Wellington runner James Preston
On Sunday morning, the 27-year-old broke the late Sir Peter Snell's national record in the 800m
Two days later he woke up to confirmation he'd been named to the New Zealand team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
"This is something I've been working towards for a long time," Preston said
"It's really exciting to get the opportunity to wear the fern on that Olympic stage and get to showcase the effort my team has put in during the build up."
Preston clocked a blistering 1:44.04s to win the men's 800m at the Merck Running Festival meet in Pfungstadt
The time eclipsing Snell's 62-year-old New Zealand record
and then the world record mark of 1:44.30s
The time also surpassing the Olympic entry standard
"The (Olympic) entry standard is the main thing for me with the record being a bonus
but to be able to do that makes our plan for the next couple of months a wee bit easier and less stressful around the build-up," Preston said post-race
I'm hoping that someone will come along and break my record one day and better what I've done."
Preston is an engineer and is coached by Evan Cooper
The men's 800m heats at Paris 2024 will be held on 7 August with finals to follow two days later

AFTER a thrilling two days of fistball the Brazilian team Ginastica Novo Hamburgo retained the Fistball Weltcup which was played at the SKW in Windhoek
The Weltcup is the intercontinental Club World Championship sanctioned by the Fistball Association of Namibia
TSV Pfungstadt started strongly with Patrick Thomas and his brother Sebastian Thomas dominant for the Germans in the first set which they won 11-6
Novo Hamburgo however came back into the game by winning the following two sets 11-2 and 11-8
Pfungstadt capitalised on the slight insecurity of the Brazilians and won the set 11-5 to draw level at two sets all
Pfungstadt used their dominance to take the final set 11-6 to win the match 3-2
With both teams having won the same number of games in the competition one sudden death
championship deciding set had to be played
The set was dominated by powerful serves by both TSV Pfungstadts Patrick Thomas and Cyrill Schreiber on the side of Novo Hamburgo up to a score of 3-3
Then the Brazilians made a breakthrough winning back to back points to take a 6-3 lead
Especially captain Dao Schmidt was brilliant in defence for Novo Hamburgo as they maintained the pressure to go 8-4 ahead
Pfungstadt could not recover and two more unforced errors saw Hamburgo winning the set 11-5 to be crowned the 2013 fistball Weltcup champions
Their first encounter on Friday evening provided the 250 spectators with exceptional fistball
The local team from SKW had mixed fortunes
The host lost all their games on Friday but put on a strong showing against TSV Pfungstadt
After losing the first set 11-1 the hosts came back into the game showing a strong fighting spirit
They also lost the second set 11-4 but then chased Pfungstadt all the way in the third before losing the final set 11-8
The game against Novo Hamburgo was a one sided affair with the Brazilians taking a straight 3-0 set win
SKW however did not go down without a fight and narrowly lost the second set 11-9
On Saturday SKW put up another good performance against Novo Hamburgo
Although they lost the first set 11-0 they recovered to push the Brazilians to the limit in the next two sets which Hamburgo won 11-8
Pfungstadt however did not give SKW a chance and went on to win their match 3-0

James Preston in March at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow
It was a historic weekend for New Zealand athletics
headed by James Preston breaking Sir Peter Snell’s 62-year-old New Zealand 800m record
Over the same weekend George (Geordie) Beamish went to No 2 in the New Zealand all-time mile list
finishing only one hundredth of a second shy of Sir John Walker’s 42-year-old mile record
Preston not only broke the longest-standing New Zealand record but also broke the Olympic qualifying standard with his outstanding 1m 44.04s performance in Pfungstadt
The fact that the record had stood for more than six decades highlights the excellence of 1964 Tokyo Olympics double gold medal winner Snell
The Snell record was set on the grass track at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on February 3, 1962, only 10 days after breaking the word mile record at Whanganui’s Cooks Gardens
Preston is on our roll of honour at Cooks Gardens by joining the track’s sub-four-minute-milers. The Whanganui connection to the race in Germany at the weekend does not end there as former Whanganui athlete Brad Mathas finished second to Preston.
Thirty-year-old Melbourne-based Mathas remains a Whanganui Club member and has, in his illustrious career, won eight New Zealand 800m titles. Mathas ran his second fastest-ever 800m in Germany, clocking 1m 45.80s, only five one-hundredths of a second shy of his best.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Beamish, another former Whanganui athlete and current club member, came tantalisingly close to adding the New Zealand mile record to his 5000m and steeplechase records.
In one of the strongest mile fields ever assembled for the Bowerman Mile in Eugene, Oregon, Beamish finished eighth in 3m 49.09s, missing Walker’s record by only .01s. This comes at a good time as Beamish prepares for the Olympic steeplechase.
Perhaps typically of many New Zealanders, one person remarked he was last (not so as there were 14 finishers) and another said Beamish did not go with the pace.
There might be some truth in the latter but the pace was very fast and, in his first major outdoor race of the summer on the build-up for the Olympic 3000m steeplechase, was only a few seconds behind winner Josh Kerr, who broke the long-standing Steve Cram UK record.
On yet another continent, in Potchefstroom in South Africa, 18-year-old triple jumper Ethan Olivier became the first New Zealander to jump 17m with a 17.01m jump setting New Zealand records at Senior, Under-20 and Under-19 level. His brother Welre was second with 16.26m.
The two New Zealand records and Beamish’s mile effort in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics should put a smile on the faces of two other former Whanganui athletes who are key members of our Olympic support team, high-performance director Scott Newman and high-performance athletics support manager Kat Austin.
It is great to see athletes coming into top form for the Olympic Games, which start on July 26.
The small New Zealand team of five Para athletes made a magnificent start to Olympics year by returning from the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe with eight medals – golds for William Stedman and Danielle Aitchison, silvers from Aitchison, Stedman, Holly Robinson and Anna Grimaldi and bronzes from Grimaldi and Mitch Joynt.
These performances included a world record, five New Zealand records and three Oceania records.
There was further good news from the US with the qualification for the NCAA finals by Lexi Maples in the hammer. Maples went to North Dakota with a personal best of 59.81m and has since improved to 64.97m.
Last weekend she qualified for the prestigious Division 1 finals to be held in Eugene, Oregon, on June 5-8. Only 24 in field events gain selection and this is a fitting climax to her first season in the US, which has seen her 10 best-ever throws, all over 60m.
Closer to home, our three Whanganui athletes leave for Fiji on Friday for next week’s Oceania Championships. I saw our youngest, 15-year-old Juliet McKinlay, in her final javelin session with coach Richard Drabczynski, followed by her weights session with Gil Barnitt. A clearly excited McKinlay looked to be in good form.
Our 400m hurdler Jonathan Maples has come back from the heat of Okinawa in excellent form, especially in terms of technique and speed. Walker Lucas Martin, although at times facing poor weather in Christchurch, is always thorough in terms of preparation.
We wish all three well in their international debut next week.
Low temperatures are forecast to temporarily return to double digits this week.
The 27-year-old has been named in the New Zealand athletics team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games just days after breaking the late Sir Peter Snell's 62-year-old NZ record in the 800 metres.
Preston said he's been working hard towards this moment for a long time.
"It's really exciting to get the opportunity to wear the fern on the Olympic stage and get to showcase the effort my team has put in during the build up."
His ticket to Paris shouldn't have come as a surprise - on Sunday, Preston clocked 1:44:04 to win the men's 800m at the Merck Running Festival meet in Pfungstadt, Germany - surpassing Peter Snell's then world record of 1:44:30 set in 1962.
The time also surpassed the Olympic entry standard.
"The best way to honour what he did was to try and better it, so to be able to do that is amazing. I'm hoping that someone will come along and break my record one day and better what I've done."
Preston's stellar week is on top of a breakout year for the Wellington engineer. In March, he ran a New Zealand 800m indoor record of 1:47:59 at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. He then ran 1:44.87 to win the New Zealand national title.
He will take part in the men's 800m heats on August 7 and there's little time for rest in between.
"We aren't as focused on running the standard right now, so hopefully I'll get in some more competitions and run a wee bit faster."

Kiwi runner James Preston is expected to be a late call up into New Zealand's Athletics team for Paris after a stellar performance in the 800-metre distance at a meet in Germany
The 27-year-old from Wellington wiped 0.83 seconds from his previous personal best at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in March
His mark set at the Merck Running Gala was comfortably under the Olympic entry standard of 1:44:70
"I was nervous about trying to run the qualifier because opportunities can be hard to come by
so be able to run [the Olympic entry standard] takes a weight off my shoulders
It's also really satisfying that my team and I can put together the plan and execute it."

He gave credit to the pacemaker who helped him achieve the impressive time
"The plan was to go through 400 metres in 50.5 seconds and 600 metres in 1:16 because that would set me up well to get under the qualifying mark
it was almost exactly like [what we planned]
We hit 400 metres in 50.1 seconds and then I just had to keep rolling with whatever I had
The last 50 metres was tough but I got it done."
Athletics New Zealand is expected to put Preston forward to the New Zealand Olympic Committee for selection for the Paris Games this week
As 2024 draws to a close it's time to push humility aside and celebrate some of the moments
which made us feel stoked to call New Zealand home
More than 6000 people of all ages packed into Auckland's Eden Park in September to bring home the record for the world's largest haka in an electrifying display of unity

The 29-year-old Alexandra local went back to his former secondary school
Butcher is Central Otago's first Summer Olympics gold medallist and reached top of the podium in the Kayak Cross in Paris
He was welcomed into the school's gymnasium with a guard of honour with the help of canoe paddles
Butcher told 1News: "It's pretty amazing to come back to Dunstan and connect back in."
The Olympic champion took questions from students and they got photos and selfies with the Olympic star and his medal
Fourteen-year-old student Adeline Ball told 1News: "Meeting Finn
Her teammates won gold in the South Island secondary schools kayak polo competition last year
Ball took the chance to compare accolades with their newest Olympic champion
"My mum told me I should bring it because he won gold
Butcher's father Dale said they have been overwhelmed with messages from the community no matter where they go around the region
"We've had people crying saying how much they enjoyed watching it
people we've hardly met or hardly know."
"I felt the support when I was over there and I've always tried to keep a good connection with the community here as well," Butcher said
"Mum and Dad still live here and I call this place home
no matter how long I'm away from it," he said
He's not Dunstan High's only medallist
Nicole Shields brought home silver in the women's team cycling pursuit
Both Olympians are celebrated in the school's Hall of Fame that was established at the school back in 1996
Butcher's former PE teacher now relief teacher Alan Hamilton also received something extra for the collection — his Olympic singlet for the wall
you don't get better than that," he said
Our athletes not only nabbed a record number of gold medals
but they also nailed what it means to embrace our nationhood of Aotearoa New Zealand
let me talk about my two favourite moments
The moment our most decorated Olympian - hailing from Te Tairāwhiti
Ngāti Porou and Te Aitanga a Mahaki – Dame Lisa Carrington won her K1 individual gold will live with me for a long time
It was post-race when on French waters she leaned over to touch the tauihu
of her canoe and gave it a brief mihi of acknowledgement before she headed to shore
Then as she walked out of the ‘Olympic gates’ for interviews
it was like she was coming on to the marae
I could see the gate as the tomokanga on the marae and Nayte
our 1News cameraman with the New Zealand flag on his back
Here was this wahine toa who had just won her ninth Olympic medal – her eight gold at that – walk in in all her golden glory
walking through the tomokanga tens of thousands of kilometres away from her kāinga
I had just witnessed the greatest Aotearoa New Zealand Olympian accomplish a feat that no other had ever achieved
Harata' – that's a female karanga of acknowledgement
Dame Lisa later told me that each of the waka that hauled in three Paris Olympic gold medals had Māori names
the K2 is Ruarua Whetū and the K4 is Purapura Whetū
My first story at the games was with Risi Pouri-Lane
who hails from Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō at the top of the South Island
I enjoy asking about each athlete’s Māori genealogy because it’s one of the ways to connect the land and people of Aotearoa to an individual
Risi delivered her pepeha and reflects on the pounamu each New Zealand athlete received when they got to the Paris Olympics
I was then fortunate to follow the whānau of Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and co-captain Sarah Hirini when the Black Ferns Sevens played their first game
“Catch the ball and run like heck” is a Woodman one-liner from that story
but the most memorable advice from the whānau came from young Kaharau Woodman to his legendary Aunty Portia
I just hope she has a good time while she plays and has a couple of good runs
Then came the finals and Portia is sin-binned
Risi Pouri-Lane’s whānau and Alena Saili’s whānau
Stacey Waaka proudly brought out her poi for our non-rights holder interviews
She twirled the poi and even delivered a ‘tahi
With not much sleep and a wakeup call of 4.30am for a live cross into Te Karere
Emotions ran high with joy as the retiring Woodman-Wickliffe was cloaked in the tino rangatiratanga flag her whānau brought from home
The names of her Ngāpuhi hapū and iwi were proudly displayed
the Black Ferns Sevens kicked the ball out of the park
They elevated Māori culture to the pinnacle of Olympic sevens success in Paris
embracing the founding bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand nationhood that our Māori and colonial ancestors envisioned at the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
there were major Māori elements at the Games
New Zealand athletes and staff embraced the chance to engage with our culture through the likes of poi
all these glimpses into our team’s Olympic life reflected what makes us unique
The culture set by Te Whare o Pou Tangata – the NZ Olympic Committee and the NZ Team represented Aotearoa New Zealand with the highest mana and integrity in Paris
Compared to the big nations – Great Britain
China – our bicultural foundation is our point of difference in the world and sets us apart from any other country
Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui – top of the South Island (lit: The Prow of Māui’s Waka)
pepeha – an expression of identity that illustrates the individual’s link to the land and people they belong to
used to swing in movements to accompany song and traditionally used to strengthen hands and wrists
Te Whare o Pou Tangata – New Zealand Olympic Committee
mana – cultural concept that encapsulates prestige
As the Olympic flame goes out in the City of Light
eyes turn to Los Angeles as it prepares to host the next edition of the Games in 2028
Having hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984
Los Angeles will become the third three-time host city after London and Paris
who have been keen to emphasise sustainability
have said no new constructions will be required for the event
Cricket will be played at the Olympics for the first time since Paris in 1900
Tournaments will be played in the T20 format
a shortened version which sees both teams limited to bowling and battling for no more than 20 overs a piece
although both its men's and women's teams have struggled recently
Lacrosse is another sport making a comeback
Despite being one of the oldest sports to be played
it has not been contested at the Olympic level in more than a century
2028 will see a new format introduced - teams of six using their lacrosse sticks to fire a ball into a goal
Baseball and softball events have had an unusual journey at the Olympics
and now back in for the 2028 Los Angeles Games
Squash will join tennis and badminton as racket sports at the Games after years of campaigning from fans
It is a non-contact version of American football which is played on a smaller pitch with smaller teams
Tackles are made by removing a flag from an opponent
A new Paralympic discipline will be introduced as well
this event challenges athletes in different classifications to climb a 15m wall using hand holds
Other Olympic sports that are relatively new to the Games line-up will stay on
was not picked as one of the disciplines for Los Angeles
Boxing's inclusion is also not confirmed after the International Boxing Association was last year stripped of recognition over failure to introduce reforms on governance and finance. A decision will be made next year, IOC president Thomas Bach said recently
The Cronulla player formerly known as Kayal Iro has explained his decision to change his first name midway through the NRL season
Iro made a tryscoring return from a hamstring injury in the Sharks' Magic Round win over Parramatta last Friday sporting a new name on Cronulla's team list
The 25-year-old has now requested he be referred to as 'KL Iro'
The centre is named after his father Kevin Leslie Iro
who enjoyed a decorated career in England and represented New Zealand with distinction
The left centre's official documents will still read "Kayal"
but the Sharks flyer said he made the switch to 'KL' to avoid any doubt as to how his name should be pronounced
"Mum didn't want it to be a two-letter name when I was a kid," Iro said
"She's the one that changed it to 'Kayal'
I think it was just foreign back then to have a two-letter name
"But my dad always wanted it to be 'KL' and I like it that way too because it's easier to pronounce and there's no confusion
I was too scared to step on anyone's toes
"I guess I've built a bit of a relationship with these fellas now
so I asked the question and got it done pretty quick."
which was often mispronounced by commentators when his father and uncle Tony were playing
"Even my dad and uncle when they were playing
the Pommies would pronounce it 'aye-ro'
rather than 'ear-ro'," Iro added
he loved it but it's pretty cool to hear a commentator saying our family name."
Iro was born in England while his father was playing for Leeds but spent most of his childhood growing up in the Cook Islands
While he hinted he would be open to facing the Kangaroos in the end-of-season Ashes series
"I wouldn't say no but my first thing is getting the Cook Islands qualified for the World Cup next year," he said
Iro and the sixth-placed Sharks (5-4) will face one of the most daunting challenges of their season to date when they travel to take on Manly (4-4) at Brookvale Oval on Sunday
"They've got a strong right edge and also [Tom] Trbojevic at the back," Iro said
"[Trboejvic] is a strike weapon in attack and things happen around him we've got to be aware of him."
The sister of Juliana Bonilla Herrera wants her memory to be "honoured through firm actions and just decisions that prevent similar tragedies"
Saray Bonilla has taken part in the Coroner's inquest into the 37-year-old's death remotely from California
It came to a close in Christchurch this afternoon
was murdered in January 2022 by her neighbour Joseph Brider
who had been paroled from prison just 72 days earlier
He'd been serving time for serious sexual offences including rape
Coroner Alexandra Cunninghame has heard evidence from various Corrections Department workers about their interactions with Brider prior to the murder
the rehabilitation agency supporting Brider in his reintegration into the community
Juliana's sister has had the opportunity to question those who appeared in court and
a victim support worker shared a statement from her
1News was not allowed to film Saray Bonilla
but she watched online as her words were read
and to every person whose safety depends on a just and responsible system
and to never again allow preventable failures to cost innocent lives
may this be the moment we stop repeating avoidable mistakes
and start building a system that truly protects" she said
Coroner Cunninghame also addressed Herrera's family
"What happened to Juliana was horrific
being attacked by a stranger in our own home must be every woman's worst nightmare..
she made the most of what New Zealand has to offer
And I'm profoundly sorry that her last moments were so horrifying
could have responded if they were aware of concerns is a relevant issue for the inquiry
But it's important that this question is not framed in a way which suggests that Juliana should be criticised for not having done more
The burden should never be on women to keep themselves safe from men" she said
She explained there would now be a period of time before her findings were finalised and made public
A person is in custody after an alleged theft
which left a person injured on the grounds of Palmerston North Hospital
Police said officers were called to a Ruahine St carpark about 1.30pm on Tuesday
Police said the alleged offender left the scene and was found a short time later
"Police would like to thank the members of the public who witnessed the incident and intervened to assist the victim," a police spokesperson said
A nurse leaving her shift last month was held up at gunpoint outside the grounds of the hospital
That same night a staff member was knocked unconscious
Staff have been calling for security improvements
Health NZ MidCentral operations group director Sarah Fenwick previously told RNZ it was committed to making staff feel safer
She said these included a security escort to vehicles
increasing security services on hospital grounds
and "opening up" access to the staff carpark for people working afternoon and night shifts
"Lighting has been audited in all outside carparking areas to ensure it is well maintained," she said
"Interim access to well-lit parking onsite
with dedicated security for staff working afternoon and night shifts
while a more permanent solution for out-of-hours carparking is developed."

Hawke's Bay iwi Ngāti Kahungunu has been unsuccessful in its bid to buy back the mountain Kahurānaki
but the iwi says its connection to the land will always remain
Kahurānaki Station - a 1156 hectare sheep and beef farm south of Havelock North which includes the peak of the mountain - came up for sale earlier this year and the iwi launched a fundraising campaign to buy it
The campaign to bring the Kahurānaki back into Māori ownership was called He Maunga Ka Taea
and included a 10-day hīkoi from Māhia to Kahurānaki
It raised more than $95,000 on crowd funding platform koha.kiwi
Hastings-based post-settlement governance entity Tamatea Pōkai Whenua Trust submitted a tender on behalf of the iwi
Chairman Pōhatu Paku said the trust was the only local entity to tender for the Station and they were saddened and disappointed by the outcome
The trust had approached the tender on the basis it was presented
Paku acknowledged the young and emerging iwi members who had generated the groundswell of support for the tender and for the longer term status of the mountain
ki tēnā o tātau e titikaha nei ki tēnei kaupapa
I just want to acknowledge and mihi to everybody that has connected with this kaupapa
Paku said the trust would be engaging with the station's new owners at an appropriate time to convey the iwi's history and also set out their aspirations
"The continuation of the protection of our wāhi tapu (sacred sites) is significantly important to us
Continued access to the mountain would also be a high priority
"The previous owners were quite open for Kura for people running kaupapa and also those that wished to ascend the maunga they allowed that
they identified that it was culturally significant to us all."
Paku said Tamatea Pōkai Whenua will need to foster the groundswell of support and leadership that the He Maunga Ka Taea campaign had generated
"The whakapapa connections and taonga that is Kahurānaki maunga remain
our greatest advantage is that we live in perpetuity and our maunga and our tīpuna live with us and they continue to be ours
"And like all of our tūtohu whenua (landmarks) our maunga carries our traditions and our identity and our histories and we remain uncompromising to act in the best interests of our tūtohu whenua both for this generation and for future generations."
Paku said the trust may look at legal personhood as another avenue to protect the mountain
but ultimately he said the maunga remains an ancestor and retains its own mana which no one can ever own

More than 25kg of cocaine has been seized and four men arrested following an joint investigation into the importation of the drug into Christchurch
Police and Customs received information about a "significant importation" of cocaine that had come through Lyttelton Port on March 29
Search warrants were then executed across the country by specialist teams to support investigators with evidence gathering
Tauranga and Auckland as a result of the six-week investigation
including possession of cocaine for supply and burglary
and will appear in various district courts across a range of dates
Detective Senior Sergeant Phil Sparks said the seizure equated to more than 250,000 doses of cocaine and $9 million of harm
"That is an enormous amount of damage and misery that had been heading into our communities that has now been halted through this investigation."
Sparks said the success of the investigation was partly down to the "excellent partnership" between Customs and the police
"We continue to have a focus on engaging with businesses and supporting their legitimate services by keeping them safe with prevention advice to deter drug trafficking organisations’ attempts to exploit their people and premises."
Customs acting investigations manager Rachael Manning said the investigation resulted from quick action and close collaboration between the agencies as well as industry partners
"We know that transnational and serious organised crime groups are actively targeting New Zealand to drive up both demand and supply of illegal drugs such as cocaine for maximum profit
They’re using every method possible to exploit any vulnerabilities within international supply chains
in secure areas or on vessels themselves."
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis
Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her
All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state
thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg
which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state
Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband
safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said
Hanson was assigned the case in late February and
he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region
They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account
obituaries and marriage licenses from that region
they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg
including date of birth and social security number
Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address
"I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say
‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me
I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.”
Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share
saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found
“I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had
having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said
Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of
And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting
he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to
so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything
any phone numbers of family members back here," he said
"Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.”
Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe
That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town
While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane
for the other it has caused problems for 36 years
It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door
Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail
to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard
a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp
remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening
She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane
whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name
Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him
“You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.”
Another Shane William Pritchard had been born in Otago
They were separated by just two weeks and about 50 miles – one growing up in Mosgiel
the other in Milton – but also by the lives they’d been leading
To watch the full video story go to TVNZ+
Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school
He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes
I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go
Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police
he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence
one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.”
he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his
He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on
“I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash
Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined
and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money
Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment
so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action
'Anything I could get away with
Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem
But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use
Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase
Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences
Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process
the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane
The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media
He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended
He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously
Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s
the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again
This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes
But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice
he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines
He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays
It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health
not realising the constant stress it placed on his life
John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living
worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.”
he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point
He described going for days at a time unable to eat or sleep wondering what might happen next
"Am I going to be in a position where they've got me in handcuffs or I've got debt collectors coming to the door?" ...You're spiralling into this black hole." He started taking anti-anxiety medication which helped
And events regarding Milton Shane seemed to settle
Milton Shane was charged for fishing without a licence in Twizel and failing to comply with fisheries officers
But a court registrar incorrectly entered the birth date of Mosgiel Shane in the system
both Shanes were being chased to pay the $1530 fine
It was Mosgiel Shane who spotted the error and rang the court
He also sent a statement from his manager saying he’d not been fishing in Twizel that day
The reply he got was to say he’d been given the wrong form and that they wouldn’t accept his proof
They just wanted to know how I was going to pay the fine.”
The first Milton Shane knew about this was when Fair Go told him Mosgiel Shane had been chased for the fine
He was told to pay up or face the consequences
feeling he shouldn’t have to pay good money to correct someone else’s mistake
But it cost Mosgiel Shane over $5000 in legal fees
and took months of back and forth between him
“Why should anybody have to pay their own money to right somebody else's wrongs and prove who they are
I’m sick and tired of proving who I am all the time.”
He wanted the Ministry of Justice to take responsibility and reimburse him for his legal costs
saying court staff such as the registrar in this case have immunity if they make mistakes such as the one made here
and if I make a mistake and it's affecting my client
that it's going to cost them money to rectify a mistake that I've made.”
he deserves a million apologies from those guys,” she says
Milton Shane told Fair Go he still gets in trouble
but wants the other Shane to know he doesn’t use his birth date anymore
And he had a message for him: “We’ve got to get it sorted for you
so you can have a good life with you and your family because I’m trying to get my life together with my son and my grandson”
He offers to meet to see if they can sort it out together
but I’m not interested in meeting him,.” says Mosgiel Shane
He says he doesn’t hold any grudges and accepts Milton Shane’s apology
And he believes the only way for that to happen is for the courts and the Ministry of Justice to give him a guarantee that mix-ups won’t occur in the future
Fair Go asked the Ministry of Justice to appear in person to apologise and provide reassurance to Shane of its plans to guard against these mistakes
The Ministry declined our request to be on camera saying any comment on an individual case would compromise the independence of the courts as the Ministry operates separately
But it did send a written apology directly to Mosgiel Shane
It also admitted mistakes can occur in clerical records
but said instructions were clear and the importance of getting things right had been emphasised to staff
Mosgiel Shane isn’t totally convinced that’s the end of it
“All I want is for the Ministry of Justice and the courts to do their job
I'd like to live without this hanging over me all the time
his criminal check has come back showing a clean slate
The government is making it harder to make a claim for pay equity that will cut costs
There have been massive pay equity claims in recent years for nurses and resthome workers
Workplace Minister Brooke van Velden announced the moves to raise the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued to support a claim
on Tuesday saying changes back in 2020 had created problems
"Claims have been able to progress without strong evidence of undervaluation and there have been very broad claims where it is difficult to tell whether differences in pay are due to sex-based discrimination or other factors."
Claims were concentrated in the public sector
with costs to the Crown of all settlements so far totalling $1.78 billion a year
"The changes I am proposing will significantly reduce costs to the Crown," she said
"The changes will discontinue current pay equity claims."
Van Velden told Midday Report she believes in pay equity but the current thresholds were "a bit too loose"
Asked how she ensure women were not hurt by this
the minister said "I'm a woman and I support women who work"
"I also support removing gender based discriminations from our workforces but what I don't support are muddied laws and unclear laws," she said
"So these changes are better for all women who are working where we can genuinely say hand on heart that what they are finding with their claims is genuine gender based discrimination."
Van Velden told reporters at Parliament any current claims would be stopped and need to restart under the new threshold
to show "genuine" gender discrimination and make sure the comparators were right
She gave a figure of 33 current claims that would be stopped
as the legislation was put through under urgency
"You have librarians who've been comparing themselves to transport engineers
We have admin and clerical staff at Health New Zealand comparing themselves to mechanical engineers."
Social workers had compared themselves to air traffic controllers
"We don't believe we have that setting right."
Any comparison would now be between female employees and male employees at the same employer
"But you cannot go fishing for discrimination across the New Zealand workforce."
All current settled claims would continue but the government was drawing "a line in the sand"
"We're not stopping claims."
The nurse's union has this year had at least 10 pay equity claims in play
The PSA union has said pay equity claims and settlements had resulted in significant improvements in pay and working conditions for many workers
The union said the changes would make it "impossible for people in female-dominated professions to be paid fairly"
"Women across the country will pay the price for this," PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said
"The government's changes today are a dark day for New Zealand women as the government says it will repeal the pay equity law and extinguish 33 existing claims in a constitutional overreach
"The PSA is exploring all possible avenues to oppose these unconstitutional amendments and stop this attack on women
We will not be deterred in our fight to achieve pay equity for all."
"This is a blatant and shameful attack on women," New Zealand Nurses organisation chief executive Paul Goulter said
"Women in workforces predominantly performed by female employees have been underpaid and undervalued for generations
That is what pay equity claims seek to rectify," he said
"This move by the government will widen the pay gap between men and women."
The union had at least 10 pay current pay claims across Aged Care
These cover many nurses and support workers
The E tū union also called the changes an attack on women and a green light to pay them less for work of equal value
The government was pulling the rug out from under a 13-year-long fight in aged care
"These changes are not about evidence — they are about saving money by keeping women underpaid," national secretary Rachel Mackintosh said in a statement
A number of unions have called a snap rally at Parliament at 1pm today in light of the announcement
the Council of Trade Unions and representatives of other unions say they will be "protesting the government's attack on women and the destruction of progress on pay equity..."

Lady Gaga gave a free concert Saturday night in front of 2 million fans who poured onto Copacabana Beach for the biggest show of her career
(...) Thank you for making history with me,” Lady Gaga told a screaming crowd
kicked off the show at around 22.10pm local time with her 2011 song Bloody Mary
Cries of joy rose from the tightly-packed fans who sang and danced shoulder-to-shoulder on the vast stretch of sand
Concert organisers said 2.1 million people attended the show
switching between an array of dresses including one with the colours of the Brazilian flag
Some fans – many of them young – arrived on the beach at the crack of dawn to secure a good spot
“Today is the best day of my life,” said Manoela Dobes
a 27-year-old designer who was wearing a dress plastered with a photograph from when she met Lady Gaga in the United States in 2019
Madonna also turned Copacabana Beach into a massive dance floor last year
The large-scale performances are part of an effort led by City Hall to boost economic activity after Carnival and New Years’ Eve festivities and the upcoming month-long Saint John’s Day celebrations in June
“It brings activity to the city during what was previously considered the low season – filling hotels and increasing spending in bars
generating jobs and income for the population,” said Osmar Lima
the city’s secretary of economic development
in a statement released by Rio City Hall’s tourism department last month
Rio’s City Hall said in a recent report that around 1.6 million people were expected to attend Lady Gaga's concert and that the show should inject at least 600 million reais (NZ$178.3 million) into Rio’s economy
Similar concerts are scheduled to take place every year in May at least until 2028
Lady Gaga arrived in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday
The city has been alive with Gaga-mania since
as it geared up to welcome the pop star for her first show in the country since 2012
Rio’s metro employees danced to Lady Gaga’s 2008 hit song LoveGame and gave instructions for today in a video
A free exhibition celebrating her career sold out
While the vast majority of attendees were from Rio
the event also attracted Brazilians from across the country and international visitors
More than 500,000 tourists poured into the city in the days leading up to the show
according to data from the local bus station and Tom Jobim airport
Rio’s City Hall said in a statement yesterday
made a cross-continent trip from Colombia to Brazil to attend the show
“I’ve been a 100% fan of Lady Gaga my whole life,” said Serrano
who was wearing a T-shirt featuring Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes over the years
the mega-star represents “total freedom of expression – being who one wants without shame”
Rio officials have a history of organising huge concerts on Copacabana Beach
Madonna’s show drew an estimated 1.6 million fans last year
while 4 million people flooded onto the beach for a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart in 1994
that was the biggest free rock concert in history
sixteen sound towers were spread along the beach
Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3300 military and 1500 police officers
Among those present were Lady Gaga admirers who remember their disappointment in 2017
when the artist cancelled a performance scheduled in Rio at the last minute due to health issues
“She's the best artist in the world,” the 25-year-old said
I love you” in Portuguese rose from the crowd behind him
whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor
which also displayed what appears to be the album cover art — an X-ray of a pelvis
"100% written in blood," the website read
The new album's announcement came a week after she released her latest single What Was That
The song's music video was filmed at a mysterious pop-up event in New York City's Washington Square Park that was initially shut down by police. The event ended up going ahead after all, and fans who stayed got to hear the new song for the first time.

Kardashian’s lawyers said she will testify in person at the trial starting Monday and scheduled to run through May 23
"Ms Kardashian is reserving her testimony for the court and jury and does not wish to elaborate further at this time," they said
"She has great respect and admiration for the French justice system and has been treated with great respect by the French authorities
"She wishes the trial to proceed in an orderly fashion
in accordance with French law and with respect for all parties to the case."
In interviews and on her family’s reality TV show
Kardashian has described being terrified as robbers pointed a gun at her
In a 2020 appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show
she tearfully recalled thinking: "This is the time I’m going to get raped
Twelve people were originally expected in the defendants’ box
and another is seriously ill and can't be tried

Her attackers fled on bicycles or on foot and she managed to free herself by removing the tape from her hands and mouth
She had also removed the tape from her feet and rushed to her stylist’s room
She called her sister Kourtney to tell her about the theft
Kardashian told investigators that she had not been injured
adding that she wanted to leave France as soon as possible to be reunited with her children
According to her testimony and that of the concierge
at least one of the suspects had a handgun
The gangsters stole many pieces of jewellery
estimated to be worth more than US$6 million (NZ$10 million)
Only one piece of jewellery — a diamond cross on platinum that was lost during the suspects' escape — has been recovered
Two of the accused have partially confessed to the crime

his genetic profile was found on the tape used to gag Kardashian
who was waiting for him in a parked car at a nearby train station
The second robber said he tied up the concierge with cables but did not go up to Kardashian’s apartment
said he acted as a lookout in the ground-floor reception area
He said he was unarmed and did not personally threaten Kardashian
but admitted he shared responsibility for the crime
Abbas was arrested in January 2017 and spent 21 months in prison before being released under judicial supervision
he co-authored a French-language book titled I Sequestered Kim Kardashian
is the second alleged robber suspected of entering the flat
