Germany — American veterans are reconnecting with their long-ago service at Husterhöh Kaserne through a stop on an audio tour that was inspired by a social media group named for the former U.S
veterans and residents gathered Wednesday at the old barracks hall
dubbed “the banana building” on account of its crescent shape
which encapsulates both the American and German legacies of the site
The audio tour features 19 steles with etched QR codes at historical sights in Pirmasens
The new Husterhöh stop on the route is the only bilingual one out of the 19
Voiced by local German-American teen Gisela Looper and retired U.S
it tells of the area’s transformation from a military hub to a thriving civilian community
a German citizen and the group’s administrator
said her journey began with social media searches for long-lost American friends who had left Germany decades earlier after their tour of duty
Sharing photos of old haunts evoked memories for many veterans
and she was drawn in by their fond memories of Pirmasens
“Then questions quickly followed from the vets online: ‘Is my building still there?’ or ‘What about my landlords
“And I just tried to help where I could.”
the group of more than 1,800 members also supports a unique initiative known as the “care call” program
Group members regularly contact listed members to check on their well-being
with a volunteer checking in personally to ensure everything is OK
so the care call ensures that they remain connected and supported
maintaining a lifeline of support and camaraderie
The bilingual audio guide is a joint effort between group members
the Pirmasens Youth Forum and the Pirmasens Historical Association
It explores the local military history and also delves into the area’s culture and vernacular
One such word is “grumbeere,” or “ground berries,” the local name for potatoes
whose parents work at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center
noted the curiosity aroused by the American legacy
“I like to think about how confused some random German bureaucrats must be when they read about ‘Delaware Avenue’ on a letter
rather than the German words for street and alley,” she said
“Maybe the street addresses will pique people’s interest to find out more
and that is what the audio guide is here for.”
the barracks initially served the Hitler Youth and were a training ground during the war
The site was handed over to the Americans by the French in March 1951
hosting more than 10,000 American soldiers and their families by the 1990s
Among the Cold War veterans who reconnected via the Facebook group is Rufus Riley
who served as a missile crewman in Pirmasens under the 2/56 Air Defense Artillery for 10 years starting in 1972
an African American who arrived as a young man amid the Vietnam War and rising racial tensions
said he’d heard about neo-Nazis before arriving in Germany
I saw large groups with flags and I thought they were already demonstrating,” he recalled
This initial misunderstanding marked the beginning of his deep connection with the city
where he would meet his future wife and become an active sports coach
leading to an urban development agreement in 1999 aimed at revitalizing the site for civilian use
who served at the base as an intelligence analyst from 1978 to 1981
returned to Germany a few years ago as a Department of Defense Education Activity teacher
“Pirmasens was my first time this far away from home and has a special place in my heart,” she said
“When I came back for the first time in 2019
they were knocking down some of the buildings
“But there is a spark of life in that post,” she said
Air Force logistics facility today remains amid a shrinking presence of the former base
are always sad when they see the old buildings on post
But the buildings never were the Husterhöh,” Hilbert said
The traditional Pirmasens company Carl Semler GmbH & Co
The management of one of the last shoe manufacturers to produce at the Pirmasens site therefore applied for restructuring proceedings under self-administration at the Pirmasens District Court on January 16
The restructuring expert and lawyer Lukas Eisenhuth from the Abel and colleagues law firm was appointed as general representative
Lawyer Dennis Blank was appointed as (provisional) administrator by the Pirmasens District Court
The two managing directors Jürgen Becker and Stefan Markert remain fully capable of acting in the self-administration
the management will now work with him to develop the "necessary restructuring measures"
customers/suppliers and all creditors as well as shareholders) will be fully involved
Since the application for the opening of insolvency proceedings was filed early
Eisenhuth is confident that the company can still be rehabilitated
the main trigger for the economic difficulties is "massive declines in sales and payment defaults
which we were unable to compensate for despite intensive countermeasures." The general economic situation
has deteriorated considerably due to recession
This has led to a significant decline in the number of customers due to bankruptcies in the shoe trade and the cessation of business operations
External influences such as the Covid 19 pandemic and the current geopolitical conflicts were also particularly drastic
The shoe factory tried to cushion the decline in sales by reducing costs
finding new sources of income and taking out loans
The Semler shoe factory currently employs 250 people
Production takes place in Germany (70) and Hungary (180)
The employees' wages are initially secured for the months of January through March through the insolvency benefits
the Carl Semler shoe factory will again take over wage and salary payments
Daily production is around 1.000 pairs of shoes
The company will continue to operate in full
Customers will continue to receive Semler shoes
Suppliers and business partners will be paid/supplied in full from future business relationships
according to the statement on the insolvency proceedings
Lukas Eisenhuth says: "With self-administration
Semler has a good chance of not only surviving this phase in the company's 162-year history
but also of emerging stronger from it." The lawyer's goal is to "preserve as many jobs as possible

which remains in preliminary self-administration proceedings
will relocate its production to Hungary to ensure competitiveness
The official opening of the proceedings is planned for April 1
together with restructuring experts led by attorney Lukas Eisenhuth (Abel & Kollegen law firm)
The goal: to position Carl Semler for the future by securing its German location and increasing operational efficiency
Important core areas such as product development
and prototype quilting will remain in Pirmasens
as will management and administrative functions
This is intended to safeguard the company's tradition and craftsmanship
A total of around 35 jobs will be retained at the German location
shoe production will be concentrated at the company's own factory in Hungary in the future
This step is intended to ensure that the company maintains its usual high product quality and delivery capacity
the relocation of production will result in a reduction of approximately 25 employees in Germany
After intensive negotiations between the works council and management
a solution was found to provide the best possible support to the affected employees
The agreement was reached to establish a transfer company to help employees find new career opportunities
The transfer company not only offers training and job search support
but also guarantees employees 80 percent of their salary for seven months
This provides the affected employees with significantly better protection than would be the case with a dismissal for operational reasons
"This step wasn't easy for us," said management
we are creating a future for the company and for as many employees as possible." Despite the economic challenges
there are encouraging signs from the market
The company announced that the upcoming Fall/Winter 2025 collection is receiving a positive response from regular customers
This demonstrates that the brand continues to enjoy high levels of acceptance

The city of Pirmasens is inviting the local American community to a special event on May 8
They will be unveiling a new tourist information audio guide focused on the American presence in the city
Husterhöh Kaserne occupied a ridgetop in the northern part of Pirmasens city
and many of the streets in the area still bear the names of American states
As headquarters of the 59th Ordnance Brigade
it was one of many small bases that were part of the Pirmasens Military Community
After most of Husterhöh Kaserne was returned to the German government in 1997
Army Medical Material Center Europe used the storage facilities as a medical supply depot until 2021
Air Force to be used as a storage facility for equipment to support quick response help for NATO troops
The primary buildings that remain from Husterhöh Kaserne are now German businesses and housing
many still retain the historic look of a military barracks
including the iconic ‘banana building.’ The city’s new information guide will be installed in front of this large
curved yellow building and is the latest addition to the city’s walking tour
There are now 18 stops on the Pirmasens acoustic walking tour
and each stop includes a small stele with a QR code to the audio guide
The tour was created in 2021as a project by the Pirmasens Youth Forum and Pirmasens Historical Association
The addition of Husterhöh Kaserne was suggested by Marina Hilbert
member of two Facebook communities dedicated to bringing together people previously stationed in Pirmasens
The guide is presented in both English and German
soldier Kenny Coleman and local tour guide Gisela Looper did the recording
Both will be at the unveiling event in May

long-time managing director of the Pirmasens shoe manufacturer Kennel & Schmenger
died on September 12th at the age of 83 after a long illness
His grandfather Fritz Kennel founded the company in 1918
In 1961 Klaus Kennel joined the shoe factory
He laid the foundation for his success at the German Shoe School and during a two-year stay in the United States
He was on the management board for 50 years until the end of 2011 and during this time he also had a significant influence on the company as the majority shareholder
Klaus Kennel also mastered the cut-throat competition that plunged the Pirmasen shoe industry into an existential crisis and cost thousands of jobs
he and young managers almost turned the company upside down and focused on the niche of “fashionable women's shoes in the premium segment”
parts of production were relocated to Hungary
where there are still two factories with 300 employees
Klaus Kennel's plan paid off and the success is impressive: Today Kennel & Schmenger is known worldwide as a high-quality brand
The women's shoes are sold in over 30 countries
The company's own stores in attractive big city locations are now an integral part of the company's philosophy
It is very important for the city of Pirmasens that almost 200 people are employed at the location
Today the shoe manufacturer is led by Andreas Klautzsch as CEO and co-partner
Klaus Kennel successfully led his company through structural change,” says a statement from Kennel & Schmenger on the death of the former company boss
has completely withdrawn from his honorary positions for health reasons
daughter Ina and closest confidants have been able to look back with satisfaction on his life's work in the long family tradition at Tegernsee
The beautiful landscape had become his second home for several years
The Pirmasens-based shoe manufacturer Caprice has taken over the women's shoe brand Peter Kaiser
The subsidiary of Wortmann Schuh-Holding KG wants to continue the story of Peter Kaiser and preserve the core of the brand
While the fit and material quality are maintained
“the collections will be rejuvenated and the prices will be more attractive”
we already offer an excellent price-performance ratio with Caprice,” says Jürgen Cölsch
managing partner of Caprice Schuhproduktion GmbH & Co
“With the Peter Kaiser brand registered in over seventy countries worldwide
we will now also be able to offer this in the higher segment.” While the lower and luxury genres are dominated by vertically integrated providers
the business area with the greatest potential lies with non-vertically positioned ones trading partners in between
“And that’s exactly where Caprice and Peter Kaiser will be positioned,” says Cölsch
The takeover promises not only a stronger positioning of the company on the market
“The integration of the Peter Kaiser brand into the proven processes of our subsidiary Caprice opens up new perspectives for growth and innovation
Peter Kaiser's unique identity will be preserved
while Caprice's core competencies will be used to expand the collections and offer customers a broader range from the spring/summer 2025 season," says Jens Beining
“I am pleased to hand over the Peter Kaiser brand under the Caprice umbrella and thus continue to have a successful future at the birthplace of Peter Kaiser,” said Stefan Frank
Managing Director of Peter Kaiser Operations GmbH
Frank took over the women's shoe manufacturer on March 1
2021 together with investors Hans-Joachim and Gisa Sander from the Wella founding family
Peter Kaiser Schuhfabrik GmbH submitted an application to the Pirmasens district court to order protective shield proceedings
Peter Kaiser's restart took place in a streamlined form
the insolvent shoe manufacturer is said to have found a financially strong investor
these are supposedly Gisela and Hans-Joachim Sander
who belong to the founding family of the Darmstadt-based Wella Group
the millionaire couple will invest 7,5 million euros in Germany's oldest shoe factory
The new investors are to be presented to the creditors' meeting in Pirmasens on February 24th
becoming an investor would be a rescue in dire need
the majority of the approximately 200 employees were laid off
The plant was threatened with closure by the end of April
The company was already in financial difficulties before the Corona crisis
the traditional company had to submit an application to the Pirmasens district court to open protective shield proceedings
the insolvency proceedings were opened in self-administration via Peter Kaiser GmbH
insolvency proceedings were also filed for Peter Kaiser Retail GmbH
Manager magazine estimates the Sander family's assets at 800 million euros
This makes the couple among the 250 richest Germans
sold 79 percent of their shares in Wella to the consumer goods group Procter & Gamble in 2003 for around 6,6 billion euros
founded by Vagabond founders Mats Nilsson and Marie Nilsson Peterzén
announces its first donations totaling 1,4 million euros for 2025
600.000 euros were already distributed to organizations that provide healthcare in crisis areas and support disadvantaged social groups
The first recipients include Doctors Without Borders with 360.000 euros and Mercy Ships with 90.000 euros
Further donations will go to organizations that work with refugees
cancer rehabilitation and the integration of young people
The foundation was established in 2023 when Mats Nilsson and Marie Nilsson Peterzén transferred their entire company
Their goal: to use Vagabond Shoemakers' profits in the long term to promote research
The Deichmann Group joins Supremo Shoes + Boots GmbH
The subsidiary Fasbra SE will – subject to the approval of the antitrust authorities – acquire a 51 percent stake in the shoe manufacturer
“This means that the wholesaler based in Pirmasens in Rhineland-Palatinate is well positioned for the future and will continue to operate independently under the current management,” says Deichmann
There has now been a change of shareholder at Supremo after one partner retired for reasons of age
is now a shoe manufacturer operating throughout Europe
In the first few years after it was founded
the company only sold its own brand of the same name
Supremo has been a shoe licensee for the Tom Tailor and Tom Tailor Denim brands since 2013
Nothing will change in their sales structure even after the takeover
Together with its Hong Kong-based sister company Supremo Oriental
more than eight and a half million pairs of shoes are sold every year
men's and children's shoes are in the entry-level and mid-price segment
The Pirmasens-based footwear manufacturer has been struggling for a long time
current CEO that managed the brand also during its days in court
along with Hans-Joachim and Gisa Sander (husband and wife)
The three of them took over the brand’s rights
production lines in Germany will disappear
Peter Kaiser started in 1838 with a slipper laboratory in Pirmasens
when the pandemic’s effects added further criticalities to an already difficult situation
the brand asked the Pirmasens court for tutelage from creditors and later became insolvent
Only a new investor could save the brand from being liquidated
the creditors’ committee approved the sale of Peter Kaiser Schuhfabrik
while Peter Kaiser Retail is still awaiting a decision
Both entities will be going in the hands of Stefan Frank
along with those of the two cited investors
The new ownership will have all that was purchased readily available starting from March 1st. And the production lines? As explained by SWR
the design and production of prototypes will be done in Germany
but the full-scale production lines will be moved elsewhere
The headquarter in Primasens will be dismantled and closed down
It’s likely that production will be fully moved to the plant that the brand has in Falgueiras (Portugal)
also given that the site wasn’t a part of the legal procedures
All you need to know about the leather industry
Michael Tackenberg was unanimously re-elected as CEO of the testing and research institute at the PFI general meeting on November 30th in Pirmasens
will therefore remain in office for another three years
“We are pleased that with Michael Tackenberg we can set the course for the continued successful future of the PFI,” welcomes institute director Dr
The shoe expert and technology specialist's tasks include initiating new projects and driving forward the PFI's various activities at home and abroad
“Michael Tackenberg is the perfect person for this position
not least thanks to his excellent contacts in the industry,” adds HDS/L chairman Carl-August Seibel
Tackenberg was the board member for production and technology at Rosenheim-based Gabor Shoes AG
he also lost his position as chairman of the German shoe industry's sustainability initiative cads eV (cooperation for secured
defined standards for shoe and leather goods products)
Apple co-founder and iconic figure of the digital age
once remarked that he had “always been shameless about stealing great ideas.” The same frank revelation by a 17-year-old literary wunderkind who is accused of liberally — and unabashedly — lifting passages from another writer has now sparked a heated media debate in Germany
cracked Germany’s best-seller list and received rave reviews by newspapers after it was published in late January
And its author is a phenomenon,” gushed the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung
called the book “the great coming-of-age novel of the Naughties.” But Hegemann didn’t have much time to rest on her laurels
became suspicious of the minor’s vivid descriptions of drug-fueled nights at the infamous Berlin techno club Berghain and discovered that several passages of the book had been more than inspired by the writings of another German blogger
After Pirmasens posted the passages in question from Hegemann’s book and the remarkably similar passages from Airen’s book
the same papers that had been full of praise for the young author only a few days before abruptly changed their tune and accused Hegemann of plagiarism
who mentions Airen in the acknowledgements of the second edition of the book but not in the first
has since apologized for “not having mentioned all the people right from the outset whose thoughts and texts have helped me.” But she also defended her work by claiming that “true originality doesn’t exist anyway
only authenticity” and insisted on her “right to copy and transform” other people’s work
taking a stand against what she called the “copyright excesses” of the past decade
seemed to care about the possible legal ramifications of her actions
and issued a statement saying it had contacted Airen’s publishing company and asked for retroactive authorization of the disputed passages
Ullstein also said it had already obtained permission for Hegemann to use another passage in the text by American author David Foster Wallace
which it had known about before the book’s release
(See the top 10 literary stunts.)
The novel tells the story of a precocious 16-year-old named Mifti
attempts to escape the meaninglessness of her life by losing herself in the sex
drugs and violence of the Berlin club scene
Yet despite Hegemann’s claims that her use of Airen’s words is not plagiarism but something she calls “intertextuality,” critics question whether she has pushed the limits of what is acceptable
In an age when sampling other artists’ work has become ubiquitous in the music industry
where does creative sampling stop and plagiarism begin in the writing world
(See the 100 best novels of all time.)
“I would have found it more honest — and none the worse
Hegemann would have asked Airen for permission to so excessively use the stories,” says Debora Weber-Wulff
a media professor and plagiarism expert at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin
Weber-Wulff believes that Hegemann’s generation shares the same laissez-faire attitude toward copying and pasting that comes from growing up in the Internet age
“Digital information is infinitely copyable,” Weber-Wulff says
But she adds that questions remain over just how much of a person’s creative work can be copied and how that person is to be compensated for it
is a San Francisco–based nonprofit called Creative Commons
which helps artists and writers license and share their work on their own terms
(See the top 10 scandals of 2009.)
But given that plagiarism is not exactly new — Bertolt Brecht
one of Germany’s most influential poets and playwrights
once famously admitted to a “laxity in questions of intellectual property” when he was accused of plagiarizing the French poet François Villon in his play Threepenny Opera — there must be another reason that explains why the Hegemann case has created a stir in Germany
a professor of literature at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Zurich and author of a book on the history of plagiarism
believes the case struck a chord because the literary world is eager to publish truly authentic voices of young people today
“What the literary industry wants is a child genius
A 17-year-old girl telling stories about sex and drug excesses is much more interesting than a 35-year-old male doing the same thing
But this only works with a rigorous concept of intellectual property,” Theisohn tells TIME
(See the top 10 fiction books of 2009.)
Theisohn wonders what the future will hold for Hegemann
he calls her book a “decent accomplishment for a 17-year-old.” Weber-Wulff
sees reasons to be optimistic: “I suppose we should be happy that someone is actually using that ancient communication method

A teenager from the League1 Ontario reserve division has signed with a club within the German lower tiers
Toronto Skillz FC confirmed that Xander Race has put pen to paper on a contract with German fifth division club FK Pirmasens
who are still fighting to bounce back into the fourth division after dropping down from it in 2021
Race will begin his first playing stint abroad with the club’s U-19 team
The Canadian teen has been a member of the Toronto Skillz FC Academy since he was nine years old
While the club didn’t field a senior side in League1 Ontario premier division last year
it did field a U-21 team in the reserve division
Race made eleven appearances for that team
accumulating 709 minutes of game time before his move to Germany
“Jake [Doodnath] from Toronto Skillz FC made me aware of this young man when putting together the roster for a League1 Ontario showcase,” reflected Anthony Totera
“I decided to go see him for myself and I knew right away Jake was spot on – I’m absolutely convinced this young man can play for Canada one day.”
Race had previously embarked on training opportunities abroad before
having participating in a Barcelona-based tournament and a prior stint in Germany – though this summer will mark his first time abroad whilst contracted to a foreign club
The teenager isn’t the first League1 Ontario reserve to earn a move to Europe this offseason, with Canada U-17 international Erik Pop signing with Karlsruher SC in Germany whilst Kabir Chahal landed with Scottish Championship side Kilmarnock
The Scarborough-based club has a history of giving youth players an opportunity to test themselves in the German lower levels, and also helped Guyanese international and former York United midfielder Javier George develop in the team’s early days

Eleven oil paintings taken by a US soldier at the end of World War II are being sent back home to a museum in the small German town of Pirmasens
according to the US customs enforcement agency
US officials thanked the grand-niece of the serviceman who took the paintings following the allied invasion of Germany
who they said researched where the paintings came from after inheriting them
Three of the paintings by local artist Heinrich Buerkel are each worth some $50,000
while seven others are valued at some $4,000 each
The painting by artist Alois Broch is worth around $10,000
"Without the integrity and good will of Beth Ann McFadden
the repatriation of these paintings to the Pirmasens Museum could not have taken place," said New York southern district attorney Preet Bharara in a statement
"Each work of art returned symbolises an act of justice
bringing us one step closer to the goal of repatriating all of the surviving pieces taken from museums during World War II."

Upon inheriting the paintings Ms McFadden sought to find out more of their history - eventually finding the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement had an open investigation searching for them

"There are still dozens of these paintings missing from Pirmasens," said ICE Special Agent James Hayes
