bringing fire-fighters and their rescue equipment to jobs
or providing breakdown assistance: with its vehicle conversions based on the MAN TGE
this is where the 500th converted TGE was handed over to a customer
the Search and Rescue Dogs Unit from the “Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe” (St
from the regional association in Straubing-Bogen
received the TGE that had been converted to their specifications at the MAN site in Plauen
This TGE that left the MAN Bus Modification Center (BMC) in Plauen was number 500
which has space for a total of eight passengers (including the driver) and can also transport four dog boxes in the rear
The Rescue Dogs Unit is always used in the event that people go missing
Their task is to find these people with the help of the dogs’ keen noses
There is a generous amount of space for the dog boxes in the rear
the animals can be transported in the Dogs Unit TGE in a manner that best befits them
The dog boxes are still fitted by the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe team themselves
the BMC’s offering has many advantages: they receive a conversion solution that meets their needs from one provider
The employees who work at the Plauen site in the Van Modification team are highly qualified
which means they can ensure that everything complies with the quality standards during the conversion process
An additional advantage is that the warranty and guarantee for the complete vehicle are also processed in accordance with MAN standards
The MAN TGE 3.180 4x4 that was handed over is powered by a 2.0-l turbo diesel engine with 177 hp
And in the version with a normal wheelbase (3,640 mm) and high roof (2,590 mm)
it offers the ideal space conditions for use by the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe team
so that they are sure to get to where they need to go
Some of the highlights implemented by the BMC in terms of passenger transportation include the flexible floor system with airline rails
as well as individual seats – which can also be designed with arm rests and adjustable backrests if desired
the interior can be lined and fitted with additional heat insulation and soundproofing
such as a step that extends automatically and an electric sliding door
When it comes to conversions for the fire service
the BMC can add an equipment area in the rear
or a fold-away table (for discussions) between the second and third row of seats
It is also possible to have raised running gear or a roof-mounted lighting column
you can’t forget the special signal system
The BMC did start working on the conversions based on the TGE in April 2017
it was already time to deliver the 500th vehicle
70 percent of the vehicles went to Germany and the rest to countries within Europe

It is currently still required by law to state the NEDC figures for vehicles for passenger transport with registration class M1
In the case of new vehicles which have been type-approved according to the WLTP
the NEDC figures are derived from the WLTP data
In cases where the NEDC figures are specified as value ranges
these do not refer to a particular individual vehicle and do not constitute part of the sales offering

CO2 emissions and the performance figures for the vehicle
Efficiency classes rate vehicles for passenger transport with an M1 passenger vehicle registration
according to the CO2 emissions under consideration of the empty vehicle weight
Vehicles which conform to the average are classified as D
Vehicles which are above the current average are classified as A+
Vehicles which are below average are classified as E
In vehicle classes N1, N2 and M2, coolant of the type R134a is used. MAN TGEs of vehicle class M1 require coolant of the type R1234yf. The GWP value of the coolant used is 1.430 (coolant type R134a) and 4 (coolant type R1234yf). The fill levels depend on the coolant compressor and varies between 560 - 590 grams.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — German police honored six U.S. soldiers this week for rushing to the scene of a horrific highway crash and rendering lifesaving first aid last year.
On Wednesday, the Zwickau Police Directorate acknowledged the actions of Staff Sgt. Joseph Williams, Pvt. Isaac Salsberry, and Sgts. Brandon Williams, Nicolas Gomez, Jarrett Long and Ulises Magana-Hernandez, all members of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment based in Vilseck.
“I was incredibly scared, but thanks to my training I was able to overcome my fear and concentrate on the accident and the injured,” Magana-Hernandez told German broadcaster MDR Saxony on Wednesday. “To receive this honor and recognition today means a lot to me.”
Following a NATO exercise in Poland on May 22, 2023, the crew was making its way south through the eastern German state of Saxony to their base in Bavaria, when they came upon the multi-car wreckage on highway A72 near Plauen.
A 71-year-old German, driving a Fiat and seemingly unaware of the halted traffic ahead, crashed into a Volkswagen at full speed.
The impact set off a domino effect. The Volkswagen crashed into a Skoda, which then slammed into a Porsche, according to a German police report.
Four people, including the 27-year-old Volkswagen driver, his 33-year-old passenger, and the Skoda passenger, 42, suffered serious injuries. Information on the current health status of the victims was unavailable.
The 2nd Cavalry soldiers extracted the accident victims from the mangled vehicles and gave them first aid until emergency responders arrived.
On Wednesday, the soldiers received commendation certificates, German police caps and a tour of a local museum.
“You saved people’s lives that day,” Steffen Doebric, head of the Zwickau traffic police, told the soldiers during the ceremony, MDR reported.
Dirk Lichtenberger, the head of Zwickau police, deemed the soldiers’ efforts a gesture of friendship that went beyond the call of duty.
“One thing is that these soldiers selflessly provided first aid in such an accident,” Lichtenberger told MDR. “But I also think about the fact that they are doing their duty many thousands of kilometers away from home and are doing this duty for our safety. That is another reason why we would like to thank them.”

MenuEntertainmentTragic Love and Germany’s ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ for DadsFor a few years before WWII
Father & Son captured the hearts of Germans
In another, entitled “The lesson of the burned beans,” the dad fucks up a pot of beans. He berates the child for not eating them. The child throws the beans in the trash. The dog refuses the beans. The father, realizing the beans are shit, throws away his beans too. The pair end up happily eating sweets at a pastry shop.
But what I do know is that in 1944, after Ohser and his friend Erich Knauf were bombed out of their Berlin houses, the men sought refuge in a shelter. There they ill-advisedly gave voice to their resentment against Hitler, which was overheard and reported. Both were arrested that spring for and sentenced to death. Rather than face execution, Ohser hanged himself in his cell at the age of 41. In addition to his wife, he left behind a son, Christian, who was thirteen years old at the time.
This, of course, casts a melancholic pall over the 157 Father and Son strips. These are little artifacts of love in all its complicated, minute, fleeting and deeply affecting splendor. That the same hand that drew with such heart was capable of self-slaughter simply drives home the horrors of war, of which all fathers must be weary, especially those who love their sons as much as Ohser.

The management of MAN Truck & Bus SE has reached a preliminary agreement with BINZ Ambulance- und Umwelttechnik GmbH (BINZ) regarding the sale of the MAN site in Plauen. The basis of this arrangement is an agreement with employee representatives. In September 2020, MAN announced that the company was considering the option of closing the plant as part of its far-reaching realignment.
BINZ is a longstanding manufacturer of special vehicles based in Ilmenau, a city in the eastern German state of Thuringia. In addition to the proximity, the broad expertise of the Plauen employees in the field of vehicle modification is a significant factor in BINZ’s interest in acquiring the site. In addition to the real estate and production facilities, the Thuringian company will take over all of the employees.
Andreas Tostmann, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN Truck & Bus SE, is pleased: “I am pleased that we can open up future prospects for our employees at our Plauen site under a different ownership. I am really happy that such a highly respected company from the region as BINZ will continue the commercial vehicle tradition at the site.”
The CEO of BINZ, Cathrin Wilhelm, expressed confidence in the long-term future of jobs in Plauen. “BINZ has generated average sales growth of 25% annually in recent years. We really need more workers who can help us complete upcoming projects and jobs. For this reason, we are all the more excited about adding our new colleagues in Plauen and would like to warmly welcome them to the BINZ family.”
Both parties are planning to complete the transaction by April 1, 2021. At the Plauen site, MAN Truck & Bus performed modifications for buses and vans. This work will be done by plants that manufacture base vehicles in the future.

Around 1,400 synagogues were destroyed by the Nazis during the November pogroms in 1938
But they are being recreated virtually: A scientist at the German Technical University of Darmstadt has already reconstructed 25 synagogues for virtual reality
the topic of synagogues is completely new," says Marc Grellert
a doctor of engineering at Darmstadt Technical University
"Many are also unaware of how magnificent these buildings once looked."
The architect has now digitally reconstructed 25 synagogues destroyed by the Nazis
it's clear: "As far as the feeling of really being present in a room
the technology is so good and so cheap that it's relatively easy to do."
Grellert is creating the digital models with students from the Digital Design department at TU Darmstadt
Three to four students work on a single synagogue for three semesters
but also a lot about Jewish culture in connection with the synagogues
"It starts with finding sources," Grellert says
the colors of the interior are unclear at first
Sometimes we are lucky and can track down contemporary witnesses who report from their own memories what a synagogue looked like inside."
The team uses 3D Studio Max to create the models
From where does the sun shine through the windows
Those who then put on VR headsets take a short trip back in time
viewers sit on a bench while rays of light fall through the windows from the side and choral music plays
the viewer's perspective changes to the gallery and opens up a view of the synagogue interior
The interior of the Dortmund synagogue: Destroyed Jewish culture and history come back to life thanks to VR
Grellert thus brings almost forgotten Jewish religion and culture back to virtual life
the synagogue in Dortmund with its almost oriental-looking domes
the velvet-red walls of the former synagogue in Hanover
and a cross-shaped dome in Cologne with a blue night sky and stars that shines in brilliant colors
The synagogue of Plauen looked surprisingly modern: in the Bauhaus style with green-blue whitewashed walls
it was only inaugurated in 1930 before Nazis destroyed it eight years later
Since the end of 2021, it has been possible to view Grellert's digital work in an exhibition
In the "Hochbunker" at Friedberger Anlage in Frankfurt am Main
visitors can use the Meta Quest 2 VR headset to transport themselves to the Frankfurt Synagogue
as the organizers would rather not overwhelm visitors with an interactive VR app
MIXED author Jörn Schumacher goes on a VR journey into synagogues of the 1930s in the Hochbunker Frankfurt
People in Erfurt also learned about Grellert's VR reconstruction and wanted to use the inspiration to recreate the Great Synagogue of Erfurt virtually
A team of employees from the University of Erfurt
the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt and the University of Jena built the 3D model
Visitors can use VR headsets to view the building
at no less than three locations in Erfurt: at the "Neue Synagoge," at the "360 Grad Thuringia Digital Discover" exhibition in downtown Erfurt
and at the "Topf & Söhne" memorial site
On a website, you can view the 3D model of the Great Synagogue of Erfurt in a web interface - but of course
this cannot be compared with a visit in virtual reality
The Jewish Community in Nuremberg has also shown interest in Grellert's work and would like to present the virtual synagogues on site
Grellert takes advantage of another side effect of digital reconstruction: the 3D models can be printed from the computer into a physical model using the "rapid prototyping" method
The Jewish Museum in Berlin also already has four synagogue models on display
View from the gallery of the Plauen synagogue reconstructed in VR
Grellert is working on a new project: the digital reconstruction of the Jewish quarter in Cologne
a huge archaeological zone extends over an area of 6,000 square meters near the Rathausplatz
A new museum is planned here and the virtual synagogues will be a highlight of the exhibition

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s top security official pledged Friday to act against far-right extremists after a neo-Nazi march in the eastern town of Plauen prompted outrage from mainstream politicians and Jewish groups
“There shouldn’t be the slightest doubt that we don’t want to see such images
that we condemn them and that we will do everything that’s possible in a free and democratic state to fight right-wing radicalism,” the dpa news agency quoted Interior Minister Horst Seehofer saying
Seehofer declined to criticize authorities in Saxony state
for allowing the march to take place unhindered Wednesday
Several hundred people took part in the march organized by a fringe political party
swung flags and marched to the beat of drums made to look like those used by the Hitler Youth in the 1930s
The head of Germany’s Central Council of Jews
said Thursday the march brought back “memories of the darkest chapter in German history.”
Authorities in Saxony defended the decision not to intervene
saying the neo-Nazis hadn’t intimidated anyone
Police have opened criminal investigations against nine counter-protesters over illegal face coverings and one more for allegedly insulting an officer
Saxony has long been a hotbed of far-right extremism
but the ideology isn’t confined to the state
Authorities estimate there are about 24,000 far-right extremists in Germany
with more than half considered “violence prone.”
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned against underestimating the potential for far-right terrorism in the country
“We mustn’t leave the streets or the internet to the radical right,” he wrote on Twitter

The business operations of the aluminium casting specialist HAL Group will continue in full despite the opening of insolvency proceedings
Insolvency administrator Dr Franz-Ludwig Danko has concluded corresponding agreements with the company's most important customers to secure financing until at least the end of July
Danko is working on a possible investor solution
"The continuation agreements with the customers give both parties important planning security," emphasised Danko
"We are fully financed for the next five months and can continue to press ahead with the restructuring and search for investors during this time," said Danko
The agreements are valid until 31 July and include the option to extend them
The refinancing of the wages and salaries of around 120 employees is also secured as a result
The insolvency benefit period ended with the opening of insolvency proceedings on 1 March
meaning that the company will once again have to pay personnel costs from its current income.
The companies in the HAL Group had filed for insolvency in December
During the provisional insolvency proceedings
Danko initially stabilised business operations and began negotiations with customers
the insolvency administrator praised the commitment of the employees: "The employees have been very committed to your company right from the start," said Danko
"The fact that day-to-day business is running without any major problems and that we can continue to fulfil all our obligations to customers is largely thanks to the high level of commitment shown by the workforce." At the same time
Danko had launched an investor process in which potential interested parties were actively approached
There have now been several serious expressions of interest
some potential investors have submitted initial
non-binding offers and are now being given access to further company data and information
"The initial response to the search for investors has been satisfactory
The next step is for the interested parties to concretise their offers to the extent that we can enter into concrete negotiations," said the insolvency administrator.
The HAL Group has production sites in Bitterfeld and Plauen
Aluminium parts are produced in Bitterfeld using the casting process
the mechanical processing of raw parts produced in-house or by third parties takes place
engine and transmission parts are manufactured for the automotive and commercial vehicle industry
The Group's most recent annual turnover totalled around 25 million euros
the HAL Group is also under economic pressure
Against the backdrop of the switch from combustion engines to electric motors
the industry is undergoing a radical change
the cost of raw materials and energy has risen considerably.

Hitler wants to do something to put a smile on Berliners' faces
So Goering says: "Why don't you jump?"
Germans relished jokes about their leaders
there were plenty of caustic gags doing the rounds – about Dr Goebbels's club foot
which made him look like a waiter carrying a tray
or the widely held suspicion that Goering wore his medals in the bath
"These jokes were mass phenomena," Herzog says
"partly because political humour for some reason thrives under dictatorship."
It was also Herzog's own way of addressing the family history
"Except for my grandfather on my mother's side
all of my grandparents were staunch Nazis," he says
The book is my way of breaking it down." He says that many were sceptical about the project
worrying that it would trivialise its subject matter: "I wasn't sure if the Germans would stomach it
I think every generation of Germans has to break it down for themselves in some way."
these jokes can appear tasteless and feeble
Herzog argues that they offer a telling insight into "what preoccupied and moved Hitler's 'racial community'." They also reveal a tension
One of the most commonplace defences offered on behalf of the German people during the Hitler years was that they didn't know what their leaders were doing
the humour was often very pointed and very informed
"One thing they [the Germans] knew – and they were in denial about it after the war
There are numerous jokes about the camps," he says
The German people were aware that the authorities would arrest and even execute anyone who ridiculed them too openly
Herzog tells the cautionary tale of Joseph Müller
a Catholic priest in a small parish in northern Germany
recounted a shaggy dog story about a wounded soldier to an ailing old man
"He [the soldier] is dying and they ask him: 'Do you have a last wish?' He says: 'Well
I'd like to see the people I am dying for.' They bring a picture of Hitler and put it on his right and one of Goebbels and put it on his left
the priest was condemned to death by the People's Court for "undermining defensive strength"
"The priest had already said things against the regime
and they didn't like priests in the first place."
Herzog's own interest in the subject was sparked by his love of Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator and Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be
when his relatives were clearing out his great-aunt's apartment after she moved to the US
they discovered collections of typewritten German jokes from the early 1940s
Ask him whether he shares his father's ferocious
But writing Dead Funny was clearly a great challenge
"The film and the book – that's the better part of more than two years of my life
You need a certain amount of drive to do that to yourself
but also digging into the nastiest things you could imagine
Having that in your head day after day is awful."
