This multifunctional wooden building designed by the architecture studio Schaudt architekten bda is located on the dock of the port of Radolfzell one of the busiest and most touristic areas of the city that juts out into Lake Constance very close to the German border with Swiss which facilitates the incorporation of a restaurant The architects designed the nave in dialogue with the large plane trees that cover it with a height lower than the surrounding trees Schaudt Architekten designed a rectangular building with two parallel facades of 42.8 m The structure is organized with 17 pillars with diagonal braces that support the load of the gable roof spanning a 12.5 m wide span that facilitates a flexible space The building permanently houses a restaurant Being able to present other temporary uses if necessary The structure is made of wood from the region except for some interior reinforced concrete pillars Its exterior finishes are also made of wood that are interspersed with large windows The architects have paid special attention to making the building energy-sustainable The roof is covered with photovoltaic panels that are the only electricity generator Ventilation is connected to a heat recovery system and in summer a controlled night cooling system is used Project description by Schaudt architekten The harbor pier in Radolfzell is undoubtedly one of the most prominent places in the town which is highly frequented by hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals every year The headland is surrounded by Lake Constance on three sides to the south east and west and therefore contributes significantly to the character of Radolfzell's tourist hotspot which would simply not be possible in this prominent location The new building on the harbor pier in Radolfzell includes a restaurant a ticket and information area for the Lake Constance shipping companies A 42.8 m long and 12.5 m wide building with a pitched gable roof was realized in a timber hybrid construction The clear grid of the 17 visible timber trusses that span the hall becomes the design-defining element of the building With the additional diagonal supports on the outside which act as tension rods for the supporting structure the result is a timber house that is reduced to the essentials and is highly recognizable The sloping pitched roof and the surrounding glass/wood façade allow the slender elongated building to blend in perfectly next to the listed avenue of plane trees consistent attention was paid to cost-effectiveness The chosen timber structure initially creates a "hall" with maximum flexibility flexibly adaptable floor plans are also possible in the future This makes it possible to respond to changing building orientations in a contemporary way As the interior consists of non-load-bearing walls except for a few load-bearing reinforced concrete columns the floor plan can be adapted at any time using simple means Wood is used as an important regional and regenerative raw material from the surrounding area (e.g This makes it possible to make a significant contribution to climate and resource protection during the construction of the building The use of renewable raw materials avoids the consumption of finite building materials such as sand and thus makes an active contribution to climate protection Electricity is generated purely from the building's own PV roof The ventilation required for the catering kitchen is connected to a heat recovery system the thermal mass of the floor slab is activated by a controlled night-time cooling system which means that the building does not need to be additionally cooled the energy requirements of the EnEV can be met naturally by targeted means the clear structure of the building means that a high degree of prefabrication can be achieved with a short construction time Schaudt architekten bda Structural planning.- merz kley partner GmbH.Planning of outdoor installations.- Planstatt Senner GmbH.TGA HLS.- Lange Engineering Office.TGA ELT.- Neher Butz Engineering Office for Construction Technology GmbH.Lighting.- Stromlinie +.Construction physics.- Hüttinger Ingenieurgesellschaft für Bauphysik mbH.Fire protection planning.- Geopro GmbH Beratende Geologen und Ingenieure.Kitchen planning.- KDREI Planungsgesellschaft mbH & Co KG.Planning of photovoltaic installations.- Energieservice Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH Zooey Braun. Pfeffer Carlsquare served as exclusive financial advisor to Fischer Information Technology Bats are the only mammals that can actively fly Some species travel over one hundred kilometres on their nocturnal excursions in search of food Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Radolfzell have now discovered that European free-tailed bats use uplifting winds for their ascents - a behaviour that was previously known only from birds they tracked the bats using mini GPS loggers and then linked the flight data to weather data The animals can thus gain altitude of well over 1,000 metres without expending much energy The results also show that the bats reach flight speeds of up to 135 kilometres per hour Thanks to the development of small yet powerful GPS transmitters researchers can accurately track the flight paths of bats Together with colleagues from Portugal and the US researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Radolfzell have fitted European free-tailed bats with such transmitters The astonishing findings on the flight behaviour of these small mammals have been made possible only by the international cooperation of experts in animal behaviour Analysis of the GPS data has revealed that the bats often follow the natural course of the landscape and maintain the same height above the ground they literally shoot upwards only to plummet down again - a behaviour that researchers call a roller-coaster flight The bats climb 300 to 800 metres in the process One bat even reached a peak value of 1,680 metres above the ground The scientists suspect that the bats do this in order to get an overview of the landscape or look for swarms of insects It is easy to explain why the animals plunge down again directly after the ascent: bats cannot glide for long Their wings are not made for that; they are too flexible and stretchy That is why they cannot use the gain in altitude for an extended gliding flight as storks do during which the bats gain up to 4.5 metres of height per second would be enormously energy-sapping for the small animals in active flight The researchers therefore investigated whether the animals take advantage of favourable winds This behaviour is known from some bird species (e.g which soar upwards with the help of thermal updrafts thermals develop only when the sun strongly heats the ground and thus the lower layers of air the bats must therefore use other types of uplifting wind A close analysis of the flight paths revealed that they probably use the upward movement that occurs when winds cross obstacles such as mountains and other elevations it is still unclear how the animals find these places They may recognize favourable landscape features such as steep slopes They could learn from their positive experiences in these places and repeatedly seek them out But they open up an exciting new research field" group leader at the Max Planck Institute in Radolfzell she and her colleagues measured flight speeds of over 150 kilometres per hour in the smaller Mexican free-tailed bat - a result that was received with some scepticism in the research community the new data measured with even better methods confirm these earlier results and indicate a similar peak value of 135 kilometres per hour for flight under their own power - speeds that "We don't know how the little animals reach these astounding speeds" Almost all of the power for the wing beat comes from the pectoral muscles 10.1016/j.cub.2020.12.042 are not responsible for the accuracy of news releases posted to will investigate collective behaviour and movement patterns of animals The Max Planck Society has announced a commitment to advancing the study of animal behaviour in an era shaped by rapid technological change The new Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior will focus on quantitative research into the collective behaviour and movement patterns of animals and will help position Germany as a world leader in applying advanced technologies to studying the behaviour of diverse animal groups Situated in an interdisciplinary hub for collective behaviour in Konstanz the new independent institute will be led by three global leaders in animal behaviour In addition to the existing departments of Martin Wikelski and Iain Couzin another research department will be established: Margaret Crofoot moves from the University of California in Davis to Konstanz Research into collective behaviour is the focus of the new Max Planck Institute Animal Behavior the scientists of the institute are investigating the swarm behaviour of these sunbleaks in large water basins in the laboratory After the Senate of the Max Planck Society approved the independence of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell and Konstanz in November 2018 the Joint Science Conference has now approved to jointly fund the new institute to be located in Konstanz The Max Planck scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior will investigate animal groups as diverse as locusts formerly of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell investigates animal migrations around the globe His colleague Iain Couzin in Konstanz analyses collective behaviour of animals With the appointment of Margaret Crofoot as director the new institute will further expand its research focus The American scientist worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell from 2008 to 2013 and studied the group behaviour of monkeys She then did research at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Panama and is now a professor at the University of California After her time at the Max Planck Institute in Radolfzell she continued to collaborate with the two directors in various research projects and is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Martin Wikelski's Icarus Project She will return to Germany in July 2019 as an Alexander von Humboldt Professor Margaret Crofoot investigates the formation of complex societies using the group behaviour of monkeys as an example She is particularly interested in how the collective behaviour of a group emerges from the contacts and relationships between individuals the researcher investigated how groups of baboon decide which path to take "Our scientific priorities complement each other well and we will benefit greatly from each other The future collaboration promises fascinating new insights into the group behaviour of animals," says Couzin All three directors are also professors at the University of Konstanz and play a major role in the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour one of two university's new clusters of excellence At the heart of the Konstanz hub is a signature building the Centre for Visual Computing of Collectives which will be an interdisciplinary facility for analysis of behavioural data drawing from expertise in computer science “Research into animal behaviour and movements can only succeed if scientists from a wide range of disciplines work together With the university and its interdisciplinary excellence cluster Konstanz offers ideal conditions for this," says Martin Wikelski Research into the collective behaviour and movement patterns of animals is regarded as a particularly promising field of research for the future State-of-the-art technologies help researchers to investigate the behaviour of animals in the wild or in the laboratory Thanks to miniaturized measuring devices on the animals' bodies and reception antennae in space they can now even follow the movements of small animal species almost around the clock and anywhere on earth The complex movement patterns in swarms of animals can only be analyzed with modern computer programs for image and movement recognition The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology emerged in 1997 from the former Max Planck Institute for Behavioural Physiology in Seewiesen and the associated Radolfzell ornithological station Initially founded as a Max Planck Research Centre it was given the status of a Max Planck Institute consisting of two subinstitutes in 2004 with locations in Seewiesen near Starnberg and Radolfzell Aptar Pharma’s Airless+ packaging systems combined with their Extended Support (ES) offering are greatly improving the way in which semi-solid the most fascinating marine animals on earth Although many films and books portray it as an insatiable predator in fact virtually nothing is known about its hunting behaviour including researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell have now observed white sharks hunting seal off the coast of South Africa The movement patterns recorded using cameras and sensors show that the animals venture into kelp forests and hunt for seals there A knowledge of how white sharks react to their prey and what role their environment plays should help prevent future accidents involving humans Great White Shark with a camera attached to the dorsal fin The researchers lured the animal with a bait (top left) scientific observation of sharks hunting prey animals such as seals or sea otters took place mostly at the surface of the water - anything taking place under water remained hidden.  With the help of new underwater cameras and GPS transmitters however it is now possible to gather detailed information about the behaviour of hunters and prey Researchers from California and Radolfzell have been studying the great white sharks in the marine reserve around Dyer Island off the coast of South Africa In order to fit the sharks with cameras and transmitters the researchers used rods to attach small clip-on cameras to the dorsal fin Using these cameras and the integrated motion sensors scientists can record the habitats through which the sharks are travelling the cameras release from the dorsal fin and float to the surface Scientists attach a camera to the dorsal fin of a white shark The cameras with a built-in GPS sensor detach again after a few days and can then be collected by the researchers There are a large number of kelp forests in the waters around Dyer Island and the sharks there show a different hunting behaviour compared to others of the same species living in areas without kelp forests: they hunt not only at twilight They also appear less frequently at the surface of the water researchers have assumed that the underwater forests form a barrier to sharks an analysis of the underwater videos paints a rather different picture: the sharks off Dyer Island swim quite happily into the kelp forests to hunt for Cape fur seals “It could be that the sharks have a variety of individual hunting strategies or perhaps they have developed locally varying hunting traditions our results would be the first evidence of local traditions in fish,” explains Martin Wikelski Director at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology The researchers now want to track the sharks throughout their lifetime to learn more about the animals' behaviour The pictures of the underwater cameras show that the sharks swim against previous assumptions regularly through the seaweed forests off the South African coast The small cameras and sensors have been specially developed as part of the Icarus project Scientists taking part in the Icarus project aim to track migrating animals around the globe They can then use the data gathered to study the spread of animal diseases researchers can also record fish behaviour locating the cameras in the sea once they have released from the fish “Our success using these cameras on the sharks shows that we can also use Icarus to study the migrations of marine animals,” says Wikelski Like other ecosystems the oceans loose biodiversity at an alarming rate Although it is not known exactly how many white sharks there are worldwide as animals only become sexually mature some years after birth Although white sharks cannot be fished commercially the killing of individual animals to prevent attacks is permitted in some countries it is therefore important to better understand their behaviour so as to avoid unwanted encounters between sharks and people as far as possible," says Wikelski Continuously observing animals with motion sensors could improve earthquake prediction nobody can reliably predict when and where an earthquake will occur eyewitnesses have repeatedly reported that animals behave unusually before an earthquake researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Konstanz/Radolfzell and the Cluster of Excellence Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour at the University of Konstanz and dogs can actually detect early signs of earthquakes they attached sensors to the animals in an earthquake-prone area in Northern Italy and recorded their movements over several months The movement data show that the animals were unusually restless in the hours before the earthquakes The closer the animals were to the epicentre of the impending quake the earlier they started behaving unusually The movement profiles of different animal species in different regions could therefore provide clues with respect to the place and time of an impending earthquake Damage following an earthquake in northern Italy Experts disagree about whether earthquakes can be exactly predicted animals seem to sense the impending danger hours in advance there are reports that wild animals leave their sleeping and nesting places immediately before strong quakes and that pets become restless these anecdotal accounts often do not stand up to scientific scrutiny because the definition of unusual behaviour is often too unclear and the observation period too short Other factors could also explain the behaviour of the animals In order to be able to use animal activity patterns as a kind of early warning system for earthquakes the animals would have to show measurable behavioural changes if they do indeed react to weak physical changes immediately before an earthquake they should react more strongly the closer they are to the epicentre of the quake A cow with a motion sensor at the neck (front) researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Radolfzell/Konstanz and the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour a Cluster of Excellence at the University of Konstanz have investigated whether animals really do this On an Italian farm in an earthquake-prone area they attached accelerometers to the collars of six cows and two dogs that had already displayed unusual behaviour before earthquakes The researchers then recorded their movements continuously over several months official authorities reported about 18,000 earthquakes in the region In addition to many small and hardly noticeable quakes there were also 12 earthquakes with a strength of 4 or higher on the Richter scale The researchers then selected the quakes that triggered statistically relevant earth movements on the farm These included strong quakes up to 28 km away as well as weaker quakes the epicentres of which were very close to the farm instead of explicitly looking for abnormal behaviours in the period before these events the researchers chose a more cautious approach They first marked all behavioural changes of the animals that were unusual according to objective we ensure that we not only establish correlations retrospectively but also that we really do have a model that can be used for predictions,” says Martin Wikelski director at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and Principal Investigator at the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour The data—measured as body acceleration of each farm animal (indicating activity level)—were evaluated using statistical models drawn from financial econometrics “Because every animal reacts differently in size the animal data resemble data on heterogenous financial investors,” explains co-author Winfried Pohlmeier Professor of Econometrics at the University of Konstanz and Principal Investigator at the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour The scientists also considered other disturbance factors such as natural changes in animal activity patterns over the day Elephants can also show unusual movement patterns before earthquakes the researchers discovered unusual behavioural patterns up to 20 hours before an earthquake “The closer the animals were to the epicentre of the impending shock This is exactly what you would expect when physical changes occur more frequently at the epicentre of the impending earthquake and become weaker with increasing distance,” explains Wikelski this effect was clear only when the researchers looked at all animals together the animals seem to show abilities that are not so easily recognized on an individual level,” says Wikelski It is still unclear how animals can sense impending earthquakes Animals may sense the ionization of the air caused by the large rock pressures in earthquake zones with their fur It is also conceivable that animals can smell gases released from quartz crystals before an earthquake Real-time data measured by the researchers and recorded since December 2019 show what an animal earthquake early warning system could look like: a chip on the collar sends the movement data to a central computer every three minutes This triggers a warning signal if it registers a significantly increased activity of the animals for at least 45 minutes The researchers have once received such a warning a small quake shook the region,” says Wikelski “The epicentre was directly below the stables of the animals.” However, before the behaviour of animals can be used to predict earthquakes, researchers need to observe a larger number of animals over longer periods of time in different earthquake zones around the world. For this, they want to use the global animal observation system Icarus on the International Space Station ISS which will start its scientific operation in a few weeks Icarus, a scientific project directed by Martin Wikelski, is a joint project funded and carried out by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Russian space agency Roskosmos and is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) A global archive with movement data collected across three decades logs changes in the behaviour of Arctic animals Caribous migrate over long distances during the year The aim of the Arctic Animal Movement Archive is to network scientists and promote their cooperation This is particularly important because the Arctic region extends around the world government agencies and conservation groups across 17 countries are involved in the archive a research platform developed by Martin Wikelski “Our goal is to use the archive to build a global community across institutions and political boundaries” The archive currently contains over 200 projects with the movement data of more than 8,000 marine and terrestrial animals from 1991 to the present Golden eagles return to their breeding grounds in the Arctic after the winter Researchers recently published a set of discoveries bringing together data and expertise using the archive By comparing movements of more than 100 golden eagles from 1993 to 2017 researchers found that immature birds migrating north in the spring arrived earlier following mild winters the arrival time of adults has remained rather constant regardless of conditions at their breeding grounds with consequences for nesting and chick survival “Our approach revealed the importance of assessing data that span generations and decadal climate patterns that when ignored can dramatically affect our results and consequently management strategies” A second study of more than 900 female caribou from 2000 to 2017 found that more northern herds are giving birth earlier in the spring while the calving dates of more southern populations have not shown the same change “The ability to look at biological processes across populations and subspecies and over millions of square kilometres is unprecedented for a species in such a remote and harsh environment These results reveal patterns that we would not have suspected and point to further lines of inquiry about everything from caribou evolution to their ability to adapt to environmental changes moving forward," explains Elie Gurarie from the University of Maryland A third analysis looking at the movement speeds of bears and wolves from 1998 to 2019 showed that species respond differently to seasonal temperatures and winter snow conditions “How animals respond to variable weather conditions through movement will have interesting implications for species competition and predator-prey dynamics,” says Peter Mahoney who conducted this research while at the University of Washington In addition to the hundreds of studies already included in the archive as data are transmitted from animals in the field and as more researchers join This should help to detect changes in the behaviour of animals and ultimately in the entire Arctic ecosystem “We are also providing a much-needed baseline of past behaviors and movements” “This can be used to improve wildlife management and document changes in the Arctic for future generations” Located in the southeastern part of Rennes capital of the Brittany region of western France this building has the mission of enriching the community life colonies in very confined spaces take advantage of this ideal habitat with its rich supply of nutrition they can transmit blood parasites like avian malaria to the birds Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell and a team of international colleagues have investigated whether this affects all seabirds equally the habitat or particular living conditions influence infection with avian malaria They discovered that most seabirds are free of malaria parasites; however are particularly common hosts to malaria parasites  Although there is a link between warmer temperatures and increased rates of infection The risk of infection within a habitat increases for species with longer fledgling periods and specific types of breeding grounds Close neighbourly relations: Like these gentoo penguins on the Falkland Islands The very conditions that provide the birds with protection against predators promote the spread of ticks and other bloodsuckers which can transmit diseases This population was found to be free of blood parasites Seabirds exist in locations as varied as the Antarctic and tropical oceans In order to protect themselves against predators or due to a lack of suitable breeding places ticks and bird lice – wingless insects which live in the plumage and feed on the birds’ feathers and blood – with a plentiful supply of food and a habitat these insects can arise in large numbers in such colonies These small pests also survive well in cold climates such as that found in the Subantarctic and are not particularly specialised in their choice of food something the researchers know from their own painful experience Because mosquitoes are among the main transmitters of the Plasmodium genus of avian malaria the researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and their colleagues from Spain Mexico and the US investigated whether infections of avian malaria differed in seabirds from cold and warm marine areas they analysed blood samples from seabirds from different regions for parasitic infections using genetic methods “We were surprised that the climate differences had less impact on the transmission of blood parasites than expected,” says Petra Quillfeldt.  “More vectors live in warmer climates; therefore we would have expected to find a higher rate of infection in tropical locations that different species living on the same island under the same climate conditions can display very different rates of infection.” The researchers defined several seabird groups that regularly carry malaria parasites Frigatebirds were found to be particularly affected here as all five species of this tropical seabird family are frequently infected “Of five seabird species present in the seabird community on Christmas Island in the tropical Indian Ocean only the Christmas Island frigatebirds were found to be malaria hosts Over half of the island’s frigatebirds were affected and with three genetically different malaria lines of the subgenera Haemoproteus and Parahaemoproteus tropical birds and three species of gannet on the same island were not infected at all,” explains Petra Quillfeldt the scientists have failed to find any blood parasite infections in other seabird groups Their research has led to the conclusion that the likelihood of infection depends on the lifestyle of the birds: species with longer fledgling periods and hole-nesters are particularly severely affected This is the first study of this kind to examine seabirds in all climate zones It has shown that different factors can influence infection with malaria parasites The study also raised new questions: The researchers would now like to gain a better understanding of the life cycles of the malaria parasites and their transmitters as well as discover which mechanisms are responsible for susceptibility to infection among the different species The case of Cecil shows: with the help of satellite transmitter systems researchers can determine the cause of death of animals almost in real time The American big-game hunter's first attempt to kill the lion with a crossbow failed he did not suspect that this was not just an "ordinary" animal The movements of the big cat were monitored as part of a research project at the University of Oxford in the UK aimed at protecting wildlife populations  This is why Cecil wore a GPS collar that tracked and reported his locations and the date of which ultimately led wildlife rangers to the hunter Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology also study the behavior of animals with transmitters which teach them a lot about the migratory movements and habitats of endangered species But they also record the death of an animal she can determine where and when these birds fall victim to birds of prey risk-averse individuals first leave the swarm in order to escape we could tell through transmitters which we later found close to a falcon's nest that the birds were killed by a bird of prey and not shot by a hunter," reports Dechmann The same applies to studies of the bald ibis Conservationists want to reintroduce this migratory bird to identify a hunter who had illegally shot such a bird equipped with a five-gram mini data logger on its back is transmitting its data every other day to a satellite for ten hours scientists can also establish where and which migratory birds This is essential information for species protection "The signals from the transmitters are so precise that we could even register where a shot mallard fell to Earth The position data is primarily used to investigate the behavior of the animals and their movement patterns researchers have been mainly interested in the causes of death in order to understand population fluctuations the data loggers may also be specifically used to reduce the hunting of endangered animals," said Dechmann scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology will have even more opportunities to track animals - through a satellite system director at the Max Planck Institute in Radolfzell the international consortium Icarus (International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space) will globally monitor the movements of many animals at the same time Solar powered GPS mini transmitters will be sending their data to the International Space Station and from there to research groups worldwide Icarus will not only deter potential poachers with its transmitters but but also contribute to the protection of wildlife animals in other ways with a lot of data being freely accessible And the AnimalTracker app will enable everyone to participate in the project upload their own wildlife observations and make them available to researchers we can follow the lives of animals almost from the sofa It strengthens our connection with them and thus hopefully also our appreciation of our fellow creatures," says Wikelski there is still hope for many other endangered animals people can forge a personal relationship with wild animals similar to Cecil I am sure that this global attention will protect many animals from illegal hunting Researchers reconstruct the evolution of bat migration with the aid of a mathematical model but also a few species of bats face a long journey every year Researchers at Princeton University in the U.S and at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell Germany studied the migratory behaviour of the largest extant family of bats the so-called "Vespertilionidae" with the help of mathematical models They discovered that the migration over short as well as long distances of various kinds of bats evolved independently within the family (PLoS One Evening or vesper bat (Vespertillo murinus) Most people know the term of "migrating bird" but "migrating bat" is not well established some bat species migrate every year long or short distances Whereas birds migrate to exploit seasonal food resources the majority of bats migrate with the intention to find better hibernating conditions In Europe about 30 percent and in North America around 45 percent of bird species migrate; the migration of bats however is a rather rare phenomenon Only about three percent of the approximately 1,000 bat species migrate of those less than 0.016 percent migrate further than 1,000 kilometres The vast majority of bats living in temperate zones hibernate during the winter as a result of food shortage at this time researchers of the University of Princeton in the U.S and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology analyzed the genealogical tree of bats on the basis of their migratory behaviour They are confining themselves to only the family of the "Vespertilionidae" which includes 316 species or about a third of all bat species Eleven of those migrate over long distances greater than 1,000 kilometres The remaining twelve species only fly short distances that vary between 100 to 1,000 kilometres The researchers discovered that the migratory behaviour over long and short distances evolved repeatedly and for the most part independently within the family of vespertilionid bats one of the authors of the study says: "according to the model the probability for the vespertilionid bats to loose or gain their residential habitat is the same as becoming a short or long distance migrant" The migratory behaviour of bats could be more complex than previously assumed The evolution as well as the loss of the migratory behaviour is probably based on the fast evolutionary adaptation that is caused by climate change or changes in the social life of the bat The scientist of the Max Planck Institute says: "We assume that the evolution of migratory behaviour in the vespertilionid bats is an answer to sinking temperatures in their habitats which made a temporary migration into warmer areas necessary" for the migratory behaviour of birds it is generally hypothesized that tropical species expand to different areas The evolution of migratory behaviour in bats enabled access to new resources and as a result Most of the verspertilionidae were originally from the temperate zone and not from the tropics researchers discovered that there is a correlation between migration and roost use as well as between migration and geographic distribution Furthermore tree roosting bats are more likely to migrate than cave roosting species A possible reason for this behaviour is the difficulty for bats to find suitable hibernating conditions in trees Max Planck researchers can predict the number of offspring a bird will have based on its prolactin and corticosterone levels Hormones are important signaling molecules The nestling number of the house sparrow depends on prolactin and corticosterone Considerable variance can be observed in the numbers of offspring produced by the members of bird species different individuals within a species embark on the mating and breeding processes at different times the minute messenger molecules that have significant effects on organisms can assume an important control function in these processes the concentration of corticosterone increases slightly when an animal is very active When the bird is exposed to sudden danger and significant stress as a result functions that are not important for survival the hormone prolactin stimulates the birds to invest more in reproduction; it controls the number of eggs per clutch and the intensity of brood care Together with their colleagues at the University of Edinburgh Jenny Ouyang from the Princeton University and Michaela Hau from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology examined how hormone concentrations in individual wild house sparrows (Passer domesticus) before and after the breeding season correlate with reproductive success These birds often differ significantly in terms of the number of clutches they produce the number of eggs they lay over the course of a breeding season and how many of their young become fully fledged Because house sparrows are faithful to their habitats very specific studies can be carried out on individual birds over an extended period clutches and fledglings for each breeding pair They also took regular blood samples three weeks before the beginning of breeding and during the rearing of the first clutch both in natural situations and under artificially generated stress to determine the corresponding concentrations of the hormones corticosterone and prolactin in the birds’ blood “We were surprised that we could predict how many offspring a breeding pair would have based on hormone levels three weeks before the breeding season,” reports Jenny Ouyang “Sparrows that had low corticosterone values before the breeding season raised the most offspring but high values during the season had the highest reproductive success They apparently invested a lot of energy in the brood.” In contrast the animals that had a very strong hormonal reaction to stress fed their young less and produced fewer offspring prolactin plays a crucial role in the timing of laying the first egg: females with higher prolactin levels started laying earlier and had more offspring as a result “The fact that the two parents have very similar hormonal values is also fascinating for us,” adds Jenny Ouyang “It is not yet clear whether the couples influence each other’s hormonal status or whether they select partners with similar hormone levels.” The results of this study enhance knowledge about the physiological mechanisms that can dictate when a bird breeds how many eggs it produces per clutch and how often it breeds play a more important role in the regulation of individual investments before reproduction begins than was previously assumed If an individual’s hormonal constitution can be inherited this could provide a fundamental explanation as to why some individuals produce large numbers of offspring and are more successful than others from an evolutionary Home > This & That > Can also get wet: Perltex – new sustainable seat cushions and lounger pads for boats Wolfgang Bauer from Radolfzell on beautiful Lake Constance is a gifted inventor he discovered that sun and sunbathing cushions on yachts are a very “special topic” The problem: once his standard cushions got wet it was difficult to get the moisture out of the cushions again condensation and mold were often the result,” said Bauer The inventor from Radolfzell did not want to settle for that His goal: he wanted to develop “a simple and sustainable seat and reclining cushion for everyday use” that would work “completely without foam” His focus was always on optimized “moisture management and the room climate inside the upholstery” After several years of development and many tests he finally succeeded at the end of 2023: at this year’s boot in Düsseldorf he presented his cushion “to leave outside” to the interested public for the first time “The innovative cushion does not require any foam at all” and there is even a “solar thermal heat accumulator” inside the cushion that keeps the cushion core dry – “every day anew and completely without electricity” You are currently viewing a placeholder content from YouTube Please note that doing so will share data with third-party providers More Information Bauer calls his special upholstery Perltex; the boater sees the area of application not only in “year-round maritime use at sea” but also “for the demanding outdoor and camping sector for the wellness and spa sector and for the home sector” His promise: the Perltex he has developed is “one hundred percent sustainable” as the textile (the raw material) is shredded during recycling and can thus be “returned to the same production cycle without further processing” The inside of the cushion consists entirely of polyester fiber, which is obtained from recycled PET bottles Its hard-wearing seat and reclining cushions The new upholstery is equipped with a “translucent cover fabric” which consists of a high-quality polyester fabric with a water-repellent coating and an integrated membrane function says Bauer; “the surface is slip-resistant and the whole thing is dirt-repellent and self-cleaning as well as seawater and UV-resistant” The main reason for the positive properties of its seat cushions is a three-dimensional spacer fabric which is constructed like a plush or velour fabric and is said to be able to provide softness and pressure elasticity “The resulting air circulation prevents the accumulation of moisture in the cushion” promises Bauer; it is also permeable to air and light This completely eliminates moisture in the cushion Another advantage of the new type of cushion is that there is a “textile latent heat accumulator” inside This collects the heat inside the cushion during the day and releases it back to the surface of the cushion in the evening this ensures “maximum seating comfort deep into the night” Contact: Wolfgang Bauer, Mail: info@perltex-polster.de Perltex upholstery is supplied individually according to customer requirements in various colors Special service: If the upholstery needs to be changed over time Easter in Croatia is an important family celebration characterized by exciting customs and a festive atmosphere You need to load content from reCAPTCHA to submit the form You are currently viewing a placeholder content from Facebook You are currently viewing a placeholder content from Instagram You are currently viewing a placeholder content from Google Maps You are currently viewing a placeholder content from OpenStreetMap You are currently viewing a placeholder content from X Metall+Plastic operates under the name Optima Pharma containment GmbH The company from Radolfzell has been part of the Optima Group since 2011 The Pharma Division thereby emphasizes its unique position in the market the Optima Group has been developing integrated turnkey solutions for pharmaceutical and biotech products for companies worldwide at the Pharma Division’s three sites in Schwäbisch Hall This expertise in supplying a complete solution with filling and closing equipment isolator and a freeze-drying system from a single source is unparalleled in the industry With the promise « Your home for turnkey » Optima Pharma is underscoring its unique market position Customers can count on Optima as a reliable partner who provides holistic advice and support for their individual requirements The integral and data-based CSPE approach also significantly shortens delivery times and commissioning of turnkey lines Another milestone aimed at enhancing this profile was reached on October 1 when Metall+Plastic GmbH became Optima pharma containment GmbH The name change is designed to reflect the unity of the Pharma Division with greater clarity The address and contact person remain unchanged and all business relationships and contracts will continue as before Dow dévoile deux nouvelles références de Surlyn 30 April: The best day of the week is here It is Sunday today and to make it more special we are here to celebrate this day’s historical significance by letting you know about some interesting events that happened today Today is the day when the Treaty of Westminster was signed between  Henry VIII of England and  Francis I of France the American Professional Football Association was reorganized in Akron Ohio and Barbara Mandrell and George Jones won the 16th Academy of Country Music Awards So these were the major events that happened on 30th April Also Read:  Today in History (28th April)  Today in History (29th April) Latest Stories Did You Know?
