About 80 percent of people will be infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at some point in their lives
Spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact
HPV is not just common, it’s also linked to the development of several types of cancer.
While most HPV infections clear on their own
certain high-risk strains can persist and cause pre-cancer or cancer of the cervix
nearly 40,000 people are diagnosed with HPV-related cancer each year
"Every day in the office I answer questions about cancer prevention," said Kellie Rath, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with OhioHealth
"Did you know we have a vaccine to prevent cancer?"
The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent infection and the cancers caused by HPV
It's recommended that children receive the vaccine between the ages of 9 and 11
if someone missed getting vaccinated as a child
it's approved for individuals up to age 45
"Check in with yourself and your loved ones to be sure they are up to date with vaccination and screening."
Regular screening for cervical cancer is an important way to catch potential problems early
Healthcare providers typically recommend starting cervical cancer screening at age 21
with follow-up screenings every three to five years.
A pap smear collects cells from the cervix to check for cancerous or pre-cancerous changes and an HPV test looks for the presence of high-risk types of HPV that can lead to pre-cancerous changes

John Alvin RathBirth date: Feb 5
to Olga Caroline Koehler Rath and Edward Arthur Rath
Fred Arthur Rath and Carolyn Ann Rath were five years old
Texas to go where the jobs were in the shipyards during WWII
where he met what would become the love of his life Sue Amacker when he was 5 years old riding their bikes together to Sunday school – he didn’t know it then of course
Fred and Carolyn got a new sibling when Olga and Edward gave birth to Norma Jean Rath
he adored his baby sister and used to joke that she messed up their perfect name acronyms – FAR
John Rath loved a good joke and rarely missed an opportunity to add a little sarcasm to any situation
John was a Boy Scout where he earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout
In the Boy Scouts he developed his lifelong love for camping
He also learned many of the problem-solving
and life skills he would bring to his family and friends over his lifetime
He graduated from Lutcher Stark High School in 1959 and always remarked how close his graduating class was through the years
and valued the friendships he'd made early in life
John was a true-blue friend to so many throughout his life
He never met a stranger and had a way of connecting with people instantaneously
He would be there in less than a heartbeat if you were ever in need - whether your drain was clogged (he had a snake)
your electric wiring was on the fritz (he had schematics)
or you needed to accomplish anything that required building or fixing something because you couldn’t afford a professional – you got one for free in John Rath and you always got a better and more clever solution than if you had hired it out
The only price you had to pay was to hear him talk about it and reference it for years to come
He absolutely loved being able to come up with that clever solution
he went into the Airforce in September of 1959
He slept underneath their airplane in the hanger in Florida during those tenuous days in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis waiting for the orders from President Kennedy for a military response to Khrushchev attempting to send nuclear weapons on Russian war ships to Cuba
Once he completed his service in the Airforce
traveling the world and leveraging his military experience and creative problem-solving skills as a data communications engineer
He is most proud of the work he did with TI as part of Project Muddy Hill (now declassified) partnering with the US military to help advance their capabilities in infrared technologies and EO systems by testing and operationally evaluating these systems in a combat environment in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War
John repeatedly received awards and recognition each year for his efficiency and improvement ideas and retired from TI after more than 45 years of service
They celebrated 51 years of marriage before her passing in 2020
Laura Nicole (Nikki) and John Cedric (Ceddie)
John was a loving and devoted father who passed on many of his Mr
Fix It and creative solution skills to his children by always having them involved in many a project over the years
and hunting through their regular camping adventures
Family vacations were always spent at a campsite on a lake and in the boat
either on skis or with a fishing rod in hand
He was Opa to his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them
trading dad jokes with his granddaughter Charlie
He was always up for an adventure – snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef with Caden or hiking to the top of the Barrenjoey Light House with John and Charlie
And he loved playing games be it Mexican Train
John loved woodworking and made many a candle holder
memo set holder and name badges for family
John was always a devoted caregiver to friends and family
When the love of his life was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s he sprung into action
learning everything he could and getting them involved in the amazing resources and programs for patients and their caregivers across Dallas
He was Sue’s sole caregiver for 13 years while the disease progressed
and always handled the situation with pragmatism and deep love and care for her
He made close friendships through those programs that he carried through up until the end
He is also survived by his grandchildren he adored
In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation in John and Sue’s honor to AWARE, an organization dedicated to fighting Alzheimer’s and supporting those in the day to day fight in the North Texas community through direct grants. You can donate through the following link: https://www.awaredallas.org/donate/

The Warriors improved to 4-1 on the season

NEWARK − Candidates always cite their experience
but the question in the Republican primary election for Newark City Council’s 3rd Ward will be what type of experience voters want
Incumbent Jeff Rath faces Molly Ingold in the May 6 primary election
south of State Route 16 and west of 30th Street
Part of the ward is in the Granville Exempted Village School District
Rath emphasizes his experience on Newark City Council
where he serves in his 16th year representing the 3rd Ward and chairs the council’s Service Committee
He said he’s familiar with issues such as the city budget
which includes vice president of Hospice of Central Ohio
Newark Rotary Club president and Licking Memorial Hospital human resources director
She said development issues are critical in the 3rd Ward
which she said needs stronger representation
Rath has represented the city's 3rd Ward since 2010
“There’s a lot of growth going on in the 3rd Ward,” Rath said
“This neighborhood deserves somebody who is a resident and lived here a long period of time
but the squeak doesn’t matter if the right person doesn’t hear the squeak.”
Ingold said she has been meeting with 3rd Ward residents and listening to their opinions on issues affecting their area
“I’ve done some meet and greet gatherings and (am) really enjoying that,” Ingold said
“The 3rd Ward is growing — probably one of the fastest-growing wards in the city."
Thornwood Drive concern residentsBoth candidates said the possibility of an apartment complex near West Main Street and Thornwood Drive has residents concerned
Vista Residential Partners is already constructing a 10-building
308-unit apartment complex called Trailhead Vista on West Main Street
What comes next is the issue for residents
managing director of capital markets for Vista Residential Partners
said Vista had about 42 acres under contract
extending from Trailhead Vista west to Thornwood Drive
a 66-lot residential subdivision under construction on the west side of Cherry Valley Road
“Phase 1 (on West Main) people are somewhat receptive to
“The (road) infrastructure will be a nightmare.”
Ingold said of Vista’s complex under construction
but I’m concerned about traffic.” She said people are concerned about a potential second housing development closer to the West Main-Thornwood intersection
which includes Park Trails and Park Ridge housing subdivisions and Willow Bend under construction
Granville school officials have expressed concerns about significantly adding to their enrollments
Rath said the city of Newark needs to keep Granville informed about any possible changes to the area.
“There’s no development on River Road that should be a surprise to the village of Granville,” Rath said
and that’s something that needs to be addressed.”
Both candidates support city's new HOME Court programBoth candidates praised the Housing Opportunities through Municipal Engagement Court program to help people charged with camping on public property
Ingold said it’s good to see 18 to 20 organizations lined up to provide support
“The people that want the help will be able to be part of the HOME Court program and get help with mental health issues or drug issues,” Ingold said
Nonprofits are kind of excited to be involved with it as well
I really think we have to look at this problem as a long-term problem
not just a problem of where people sleep.”
Rath said council's passage of an ordinance to outlaw camping on public property has already had an impact
“It’s absolutely had an effect," Rath said
"We see a lot less of it going on right now.”
Rath said he supported the ordinance because he knew the law director was working on the HOME Court plan
“That’s the main reason I agreed on the camping ordinance: to get people into a system to get help," Rath said
"They’ll have a team of people to help them in any area they need help
“No one thing is going to solve homelessness

THE SOLDIER’S LETTERS OFFER AN INTIMATE LOOK AT THE TRIAL THAT RIVETED A NATION
Among the personal correspondences in the Christian Rath Archive is this letter Rath wrote to his wife on May 10
One of Rath’s 19th-century cartes de visites
who immigrated to the United States after participating in a failed revolution in his native country of Germany
he was married with children and did not join the Union Army until August 1862
when he enlisted as a second lieutenant in the 17th Michigan Infantry
His letters home begin as soon as he moves into the Detroit Barracks and continue until he returns home in late July 1865
his main purpose was to convey to her that he was well and to share his private thoughts about what he was witnessing – first as a Union officer leading his men into heated battle
then as provost marshal watching the fighting from a short distance
and finally as the man tasked with jailing and executing the Lincoln Conspirators
The Rath Archive also includes a section of rope and handcuffs
After the hanging of the Lincoln Conspirators
Rath is said to have ‘cut down the ropes and divided them into pieces as souvenirs of the day.’
Although history books have carefully recorded the unfolding of the Lincoln assassination from the moment John Wilkes Booth fired his pistol
Rath’s letters are one man’s uncensored thoughts
He writes that Lincoln’s death was profoundly felt by his fellow soldiers as the president had been “very kind to the Soldier.” He shares that every man felt it “his special Duty to avenge his Death.” At this point
he had no idea he would be chosen for that very task
While at first he wishes all of the accused conspirators should meet their doom
only his loyalty to his adopted nation compels him to complete his duty
He especially feels compassion for Mary Surratt
who he does not believe looks like a killer
Rath was interviewed many times in his later years about his experiences
and he was consistent in his statements that he did not believe Surratt would or should be hanged
Surratt was hanged alongside Lewis Powell (Payne)
The diaries in the Rath Archive cover the years 1863 and 1864
Rath writes home two days later to relay the events
and his letter is filled with the conflicted emotions of a man who has followed orders: “I was ill prepared for the execution
but as a soldier and in the time of my duty I was oblidge to perform the part assigned to me.” Immediately after the execution
he was promoted to lieutenant colonel specifically for his “special efficient services during the confinement
trial and execution of the conspirators,” but he makes no mention of that in his letter home
Rath’s letters, diaries, cartes de visites and other relics were carefully stored by his family and passed from one generation to the next
What were originally hastily written messages meant for an audience of one have been transformed by the passing years into a rich source of information that brings us the immediacy of one of the most profoundly tragic moments in American history
Which is what makes intact archives like this so appealing to collectors
That so few such bodies of material remain outside of institutions only raises the stakes

For the first time since becoming Heath mayor in 2010
Mark Johns will face a challenger this year
filed to run for Heath mayor in the November general election
Johns has been unopposed in the past three elections since defeating incumbent Richard Waugh in 2009
The city's three incumbent ward council members are all unopposed in the election
The Licking County Board of Elections met Monday to certify candidates and issues for the May 6 primary election ballot
The only primary elections will be Republican battles for Licking County Municipal Court clerk and Newark City Council 3rd Ward
Gary Burkholder and Carrie Masterson seek the clerk's position
Incumbent Jeff Rath and Molly Ingold are the candidates in Newark's 3rd Ward
If someone wants to vote for the candidates in the May election
The elections board voted to invalidate the candidacy of Republican Zach Culver for Newark City Council's 7th Ward because Culver altered his candidate petitions at the BOE office counter instead of prior to circulating his petitions
which means candidates do not run as Democrats or Republicans
“We don’t allow partisan political factors to get involved in how our city government works,” Johns said
the people of Heath recognized the city council and I have worked very well together to do many positive things in Heath
I look forward to running a campaign that focuses on those accomplishments and seeing Heath continue to prosper and be the city of progress.”
but Licking County Republican Party Chairman Matt Dole replied to the message for Spires on his behalf:
“He’s trying to get things up and running (on his campaign),” Dole said
and we’ve had a lot of conversations about it.”
but moved to Florida and returned about 18 months ago
He said Spires has been active in the Republican Party since he returned
Dole explained the reason Spires wanted to run for mayor of Heath:
“It’s really (due to) the economic development and growth happening there,” Dole said
“He believes Heath is not prepared for the likely growth that’s coming over the next generation.”
Johns defended Heath’s track record and said residents take pride in its approach to government
Dole’s perspective is pretty off the mark,” Johns said
“Anybody in the development community knows Heath does a robust and effective job of reviewing development plans of all types
The city of Heath for decades has done a tremendous job with fostering manageable growth.”
Dole said Heath has no engineer’s office and no law director’s office
Johns said the city has had a law director for decades
David Morrison has been the law director for several years and Richard Bindley filled the role before him
The city also is going through the process of hiring a city engineer
but those services have been provided to the city for decades by Jobes-Henderson and now Verdantas
Dole has the correct information about the city of Heath,” Johns said
I tried to make myself accessible to the community
I try to take the mindset to engage with people personally.”
Rath has represented the city's 3rd Ward on City Council since 2010
The 3rd Ward is located on the city's west end
Rath said he was surprised to have a primary election opponent
which he has not had since his first election
it was an open seat,” Rath said of the 2009 race
“I think I’ve served the 3rd Ward very well over the last four terms
I feel like I’ve got the confidence of the residents of the 3rd Ward."

most development occurs in the 3rd Ward,” Rath said
“One thing I’ve always talked about is keeping the neighborhood the way it is and making sure development is the right development for the neighborhood
I’ve done that in the past and I feel I got a good handle on that.”

International bestseller Emily Rath has won over legions of fans with her spicy romance novels
She’s known for heroines who are witty and relatable
like the average Janes who populate her chart-topping Jacksonville Rays hockey romance series
This is why some fans might be surprised to learn that her new novel
is a fantasy adventure inspired by Finnish mythology
North is the Night is actually a culmination of two of her deepest literary loves—fantasy and mythology
It’s the novel that has been brewing inside her since she was young
and her grandmother would recount Finnish folktales and family stories in her kitchen while making pulla bread
I’ve devoured books on mythology and folklore
I’ve always enjoyed seeing how stories echo and repeat across history and place,” says Rath
Rath first gained popularity on BookTok with the Jacksonville Rays series
After independently publishing the first two installments
she had sold nearly 150,000 copies by the end of the year and gained more than 27 million views on TikTok
which released trade paperback editions of Pucking Around and Pucking Wild that put another quarter of a million print copies into the marketplace
was released by Kensington late last month
“I’ve branded my creative world the ‘Emilyverse’ with the idea that
you’ll get the same rich storytelling
and I hope at least a little kissing,” says Rath
North is the Night still has plenty to offer Rath fans who love the way her stories explore unconventional relationships and strong female characters following their desires
But whereas the Jacksonville Rays series and her historical romances are super-steamy
North is the Night dials down the heat level and focuses on the quest
forced to walk separate paths—one in the land of the living and the other in the realm of the dead
After a death goddess drags Aina to Tuonela
she tries to understand the motivations of the gods in hopes of escaping
Siiri braves a dangerous journey north to seek the greatest shaman of legend
and the only person to venture to the realm of death and return alive
Aina and Siiri must each risk everything to seize back their destinies
Fans of Greek mythology will recognize how the novel inverts the story of Hades and Persephone
the novel’s most significant influence is the Kalevala
a 19th-century epic poem that tells the mythology of the Finnish people
from the origins of the world until the introduction of Christianity
Rath credits her grandmother with instilling in her a passion for her Finnish heritage
She gave me my first Finnish phrase book and my first copy of the Kalevala,” says Rath
To match North is the Night’s rich storytelling
Kensington has created beautifully designed hardcovers
The collectible print editions match Rath’s feeling that writing North is the Night was
“akin to a religious experience.” Drawing on her academic background—Rath has PhDs in Political Science and Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame—and melding it with her love of Finnish mythology
Rath created a world that “felt like a homecoming,” she says
“I found myself relating in so many ways to my characters and longing to fall into this world I was creating.”

Three USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) athletes reached the finals of the Bob Smith Open, held at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas on Sunday.
Claiming gold medals were Kollin Rath (Stroudsburg, Pa./EAP Program) at 157 pounds and Rylan Kuhn (Parkville, Mo./EAP Program) at 285 pounds. Claiming a silver medal at 125 pounds was Dale O’Blia (Denver, Colo./EAP Program).
The Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) was designed to develop young athletes with Olympic potential at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center (USOPTC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This has included wrestlers who are still in high school, or are high school graduates who choose to train in the international styles prior to going to college.
Rath won six straight bouts to claim the title, including a 17-2 technical fall over unattached Layton Schneider in the finals. Rath’s closest battle came in the semifinals, a 9-8 victory over Oklahoma State redshirt sophomore Cutter Sheets. His quarterfinals win was over unattached Oklahoma freshman Owen Eck, 4-1. In the round of 16, Rath stopped unattached Nebraska redshirt freshman Dez Garterell, 2-0.
Rath, who is a senior for Bethlehem Catholic, is a two-time Pennsylvania state champion. He is the No. 13 Pound-For-Pound high school wrestler according to FloWrestling. He was a 2023 U17 Nationals freestyle runnerup and a 2022 16U Nationals freestyle runner-up.
Kuhn had five straight wins, including an 8-3 win over Newman junior Caleb Wunsch. In the semifinals, he edged Nebraska-Kearney redshirt junior Jake Boley, 6-5. Two of Kuhn’s victories were by pin, over Arrick Williams of Northwest Tech and Peyton Hahn of Air Force.
Kuhn was a two-time Missouri state champion for St. Pius X High School and a three-time Fargo All-American, including finishing as a runner-up in the 2022 16U Nationals in Greco-Roman. He was fifth in freestyle at the 2024 Junior Nationals.
O’Blia was defeated in the championship finals by unattached Oklahoma sophomore Conrad Hendricksen, 4-2. He won four straight matches to reach the finals, including an 8-5 sudden victory win over sophomore Nico Tocci of the U.S. Air Force Academy in the second round. His semifinals win was over Adams State junior Isaiah Gamez, 7-2.
O’Blia was a four-time Colorado state high school champion for Mullen High School.
“As a whole, they did a great job. There are a lot of things still to work on, and they know it. I can definitely tell they are excited. There were a lot of breakthroughs today for each guy. It is good to know that they are not even close to wrestling their best, yet can put up such a performance and really gut out some matches,” said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Developmental Coach J’den Cox.
On November 23, O’Blia placed third at 125 pounds and Kuhn placed fourth at 285 pounds at the Younis Hospitality Open in Kearney, Neb.
“I am very excited for what the future holds for these guys. Their ceiling, I don’t know where that is at right now. With this being the last folkstyle tournament of our season, it is very exciting going into the freestyle season,” said Cox.

Ex-crime commissioner Gereon Rath, who was thought to be dead, returns to Germany from the USA. He wants to say goodbye to his dying father. A bad idea, because the SS doubt his death. The last Rath novel by Volker Kutscher ends with the November pogroms of 1938.
