final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting ahead of the Paris 2024 Games the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting on 22-23 June will be an important stepping stone ahead of the Olympics Some of the leading contenders in Ratingen are already in a position to qualify for the Games but several others are on the brink of qualification and so will be looking to boost their world ranking in the German city this weekend The Estonian hasn’t competed since last year’s World Championships in Budapest – where he finished fourth with a PB of 8681 – and achilles and knee injuries kept him out of this year’s World Indoor Championships and the European Championships The 26-year-old already has the Olympic qualifying mark so he won’t have to worry about big scores this weekend in Ratingen be keen to put together a confidence-boosting series Three other athletes in the field – Spain’s Jorge Urena Australia’s Daniel Golubovic and Rik Taam of the Netherlands – are currently in an Olympic qualifying position in the world rankings but they’ll need a strong performance this weekend to hold on to those places was second in Ratingen last year with a PB of 8381 but he’ll be hoping for a mark nearer to – or even in excess of – 8000 points in Ratingen Taam finished one place behind Urena in Ratingen last year The Dutch all-rounder went on to finish 13th at the World Championships in Budapest but he hasn’t completed a combined events competition since then As the athlete currently in the 24th and final qualifying spot for the Olympics he’ll be highly motivated going into this weekend Golubovic is sandwiched between Urena and Taam in the road to Paris qualifying rankings The Commonwealth and Oceanian silver medallist will be competing in Ratingen for the first time in what he hopes will be a key performance towards securing selection for his first Olympics Two German men – world leader Leo Neugebauer and 2019 world champion Niklas Kaul – already have the Olympic qualifying standard None of these will be competing in Ratingen but a few other German decathletes will be in action in a bid to move ahead of Eitel in the rankings set a PB of 8282 in Götzis last month then went on to finish ninth at the European Championships with 8150 Ratingen will mark his third decathlon within five weeks but a solid performance certainly won’t harm his world rankings points The two-time Ratingen winner last completed a decathlon in July last year but his PB (8580) is the second-best of the field Germany’s Felix Wolter set his PB of 8299 when winning in Marburg last year and he came close to it in Götzis five weeks ago with 8190 He’ll be aiming to match or improve on his fifth-place finish in Ratingen last year Czech decathlete Vilem Strasky is another who’s within sniffing distance of an Olympic qualifying spot Australia’s Cedric Dubler and Poland’s Pawel Wiesiolek will also be looking to pull out something special ahead of the Games Two-time Ratingen winner Carolin Schafer will start as the favourite for the heptathlon The 2017 world silver medallist has been in solid form this year and got off to a promising start at the recent European Championships before recording three fouls in the shot put If she’s able to hold her nerve this weekend she could notch up yet another Ratingen victory becoming just the fourth woman to win three or more times in the German city But she’ll face strong competition from the likes of compatriot Vanessa Grimm Austria’s Verena Mayr and China’s Zheng Ninali Grimm came within 16 points of her PB to finish fifth in Götzis last month with 6307 She is currently within the qualifying quota for Paris but only just as she’s in 23rd place – one place behind Mayr and one place ahead of Zheng Mayr won in Ratingen in 2019 with a national record of 6591 then went on to claim bronze at the World Championships later that year More recently she was eighth in Götzis with 6196 but then did not finish at the European Championships currently sits in the 24th and final qualifying spot for Paris Earlier this year she scored 6164 in California so she’ll be keen to improve on that to climb into a safer position in the world rankings Several other women heading to Ratingen are just outside of the top 24 qualifying positions Australia’s Tori West set a PB of 6245 to finish sixth in Götzis and is now just two places behind Zheng on the road to Paris list Ireland’s Kate O’Connor and Ukraine’s Yuliya Loban are close behind West while Sarah Lagger and teenager Jana Koscak are also in the top 32 The likes of French duo Esther Conde-Turpin and Celia Perron will also be highly motivated Till Steinforth and Sandrina Sprengel achieved personal best performances to complete a German double at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting the final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event ahead of the Paris Olympics Steinforth’s score to win the decathlon was 8287 61 points ahead of his compatriot Felix Wolter Czechia’s Vilem Strasky placed third on 7986 Sprengel scored 6260 points to win the heptathlon by 16 points ahead of Ireland’s Kate O'Connor with Australia’s Tori West only another nine points back in third place Steinforth threatened the meeting record in the very first event improving his 100m PB from 10.69 to 10.41 (1.4m/s) Sven Jansons matched his PB of 10.56 to finish second while his Dutch compatriot Rik Taam was third with 10.59 Wolter was fourth with 10.65 and Strasky fifth with 10.72 Steinforth would maintain his lead for the next six events only dropping to second place after the pole vault and regaining top spot after the javelin He and Wolter occupied the top two spots throughout Steinforth leaping 7.59m (1.0m/s) and Wolter 7.55m (0.7m/s) and they were separated by 66 points at that stage Estonia’s world fourth-place finisher Karel Tilga who decided to test himself in a few disciplines in Ratingen only took one attempt – a foul – in the long jump but he led the shot put with a PB throw of 16.59m surpassing 16 metres in each of the three rounds and finishing just four centimetres off the meeting record US-based Steinforth was below his best of 14.33m but he remained in the overall lead with a throw of 13.48m Nowak topped the high jump thanks to a 2.01m clearance Strasky and Fred Isaac Fleurisson all made it over 1.98m.  The final event on day one was topped by Taam clocking 47.24 to finish just ahead of Steinforth in a PB of 47.38 – his first time under 48 seconds That left Steinforth in the lead overnight led by Fleurisson in 13.96 (0.2m/s) ahead of Strasky (14.04) Steinforth was just 0.01 off his PB in winning the second race in 14.12 That result maintained Steinforth’s lead and after six events he was 123 points ahead of Wolter who held on to second spot overall despite almost falling in the hurdles There were PBs for Pittomvils and Wolter in the discus as they respectively threw 48.35m and 45.42m Steinforth stayed ahead with a best of 42.18m but Wolter’s PB performance closed the gap to 57 points with three events to go It was at this stage that Taam’s winning hopes came to an end as he was unable to achieve a valid throw and Strasky moved into third place overall Steinforth lost the lead for the first time after the pole vault as he cleared 4.70m to Wolter’s PB-equalling 5.00m Strasky managed 4.90m and between them they kept the top three spots Steinforth launched himself back into the lead with another PB in the penultimate event His 59.53m was the second best of the competition behind Leon Mak’s 59.85m – a PB by almost three metres Wolter had to settle for a best of 52.03m but still had a top two place and the compatriots were 78 points apart with just the 1500m to go Steinforth kept Wolter in his sights in that final event and raced to a more than five second PB of 4:37.73 to clinch the title with a lifetime best of 8287 Wolter ran 4:35.07 to secure second place with 8226 while Strasky – in his third decathlon in five weeks – closed his campaign with a 4:47.35 1500m to score a total of 7986 for third place Pittomvils finished fourth on 7906 after a strong end to his series “An increase of more than 200 points is of course great I even had weaker disciplines like the shot put and the pole vault,” Steinforth told the German athletics association “I hope that my development continues like this because in four years I want to be at the Olympic Games Sandrina Sprengel in Ratingen (© Fynn Zenker) the European U20 champion and world U20 bronze medallist clocking 13.50 (0.5m/s) in the 100m hurdles That was the fifth fastest time of the first event led by Esther Conde-Turpin of France with a wind-assisted 13.25 (2.7m/s) China’s Zheng Ninali ran 13.32 and Germany’s 2017 world silver medallist Carolin Schafer ran 13.35 There was disappointment for Austria’s Ivona Dadic who fell and did not finish Sprengel’s aim for the season was to surpass 6200 points and she remained on track for that in Ratingen with a high jump clearance of 1.78m – down on her PB of 1.83m but enough to see her achieve the joint second-best height of the morning behind Jana Koscak’s 1.81m.  had started well in her most recent heptathlon at the European Championships in Rome but then she recorded three fouls in the shot put She had more success this time in Ratingen throwing 14.40m for the second-best throw of the day three centimetres off the leading 14.43m by Germany’s Vanessa Grimm contesting her third heptathlon in five weeks O'Connor was also among the five athletes to surpass 14 metres with 14.16m while Sprengel set another PB with her 13.26m throw Schafer shot to the top spot after three events 24 points ahead of the 20-year-old Sprengel Schafer held on to that lead to finish the first day as No.1 on 3736 points clocking 24.17 (-1.8m/s) for the second quickest 200m of the day behind West’s 24.14 (-1.3m/s) Sprengel clocked 24.21 to finish second behind West and ended day one in second place Zheng ran 24.73 and was in third place overnight with West in fourth and O'Connor in seventh Things didn’t go to plan for Schafer at the start of day two as she managed a best of 5.66m in the long jump Sprengel replaced her as leader after that event jumping 6.27m – just 10cm off her PB and 8cm off the leading mark achieved by Lucie Kienast Sprengel set another PB in the penultimate event throwing 46.03m to improve her previous best by more than a metre and maintain top spot overall Her compatriot Marie Dehning threw farthest improving her PB by almost three metres with 56.12m and breaking the meeting record as the other three athletes to surpass 46 metres.  Schafer was in fourth place and Zheng in fifth Running in the same race as O'Connor and West Sprengel didn’t let them get too far away and crossed the finish line in 2:19.25 to secure victory on her Ratingen debut with her PB of 6260 points O'Connor was fastest overall and her 2:14.57 took her to a total of 6244 to secure second place ahead of West on 6235 Elisa Pineau of France finished fourth on 6000 “I am overjoyed because I never expected to win,” said Sprengel “After the 100m hurdles I already felt that such a score was possible the entire heptathlon usually goes well for me too.” Results You are using an outdated browser. heptathlon ahead of her German compatriot Carolin Schafer at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting this weekend (7-8) On the first day of the World Athletics Combined Events Gold fixture Ehammer returned to competition for the first time since taking world indoor silver in Belgrade and broke the Swiss long jump record that had stood for almost 20 years giving the 22-year-old a lead that he would not relinquish His competition had started with a 10.65 run in the 100m – the fastest of the day – before he followed it with his record-breaking leap On a day when most other jumpers struggled to produce big marks – the next-best athlete jumped 7.35m – Ehammer improved with each round improving to 7.97m and then finishing with his mammoth effort Olympic decathlon champion Damian Warner owned the previous world decathlon best with the 8.28m he jumped en route to his victory in Götzis last year Simon Ehammer.8,30 Meter. in the next event who heaved his shot out to a lifetime best of 16.63m Overall leader Ehammer threw an outdoor PB of 14.68m but world champion Niklas Kaul and 2017 world bronze medallist Kai Kazmirek – as had been the case in the first two disciplines – finished further down the field German champion Tim Nowak moved up the field after the high jump thanks to his outdoor PB clearance of 2.07m scaling 2.04m to maintain his overall lead the final decathlon discipline of the first day Kaul and Kazmirek took a few strides out of their blocks once the gun had fired but then stepped off the track Kaul later explained that he had a headache and felt dizzy Ehammer clocked a solid 48.30 to bring his score to 4583 – 125 points up on the pace from his 8231 PB score from two years ago Germany’s Malik Diakite uncorked a huge PB of 46.76 in the 400m to break the meeting record Beckers finished the first day in second place overall with 4320 Ehammer picked up from where he left off at the start of day two going quickest by a big margin in the 110m hurdles with 13.75 Sweden’s Marcus Nilsson was the dominant force in the discus throwing 46.88m for a mark more than two metres further than any of his rivals Another PB performance helped Ehammer to maintain his lead the Swiss rising star throwing 39.13m to add almost three metres to his previous best Ehammer was then among the three athletes to soar clear at 5.00m in the pole vault with Nowak matching his outdoor PB and Nilsson also managing the height The leader remained on target for a Swiss record Germany’s Jan Ruhrmann was a class apart in the javelin the Swiss record and a qualifying score for the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 remained in reach for the leader Ehammer crossed the finish line victorious – improving the Swiss record by more than 100 points and surpassing the standard for Oregon by four points Nilsson ended his strong second day with the fastest time of 4:20.02 and moved up a place into fourth (7927) behind Ehammer “Those were two incredibly beautiful days,” said Ehammer “A great start to the season in a great atmosphere The long jump was of course the best – I didn't think I could jump 8.30m at such an early stage “It was my first decathlon since 2020 so of course it's awesome to start with a Swiss record and World Championships standard.” He will next compete in Götzis later this month “I know that I can do even more in all disciplines and that I want more." 2019 European U23 silver medallist Weissenberg held a narrow lead overnight but with just 76 points separating the top three contenders 2017 world silver medallist Schafer took an early lead after running 13.57 in the 100m hurdles France’s Leonie Cambours was close behind with 13.58 and Weissenberg was third overall with 13.78 Cambours then cleared 1.80m in the high jump giving her the overall lead from Weissenberg A 1.71m leap from Schafer meant she dropped down the standings briefly USA’s Shaina Burns entered the fray with a 14.70m heave in the shot close behind Weissenberg (who threw 13.59m) Weissenberg extended her lead thanks to a 24.03 clocking in the 200m – the fastest of the day – giving her a bit more breathing room over Schafer (24.40) and Cambours (24.44) while Schafer was second (3643) and Cambours third (3620) Weissenberg is the 2016 world U20 long jump silver medallist and she showed her strength in that discipline at the start of day two That was the second-best mark behind Lovisa Karlsson’s 6.27m – the performance moving the Swedish athlete into fifth place Weissenberg remained at the top of the standings while Cambours overtook Schafer and moved into second place A 48.00m javelin throw by Weissenberg was the best of the competition and Schafer regained second place with one event to go throwing 47.81m – 170 points separating the top two A time of 2:17 was needed in the 800m for Weissenberg to improve her overall PB and while that was out of reach she did more than enough for victory and ran 2:18.72 for her 6273-point score – a qualifying standard for the European Championships on home soil Schafer’s 2:13.95 PB contributed to her 6170-point tally for second place because I didn't think I would win in Ratingen,” said Weissenberg “The atmosphere was incredibly good.” Her aim now will be the World Championships standard of 6420 in Götzis Results Having missed the past two full seasons due to injury and childbirth Germany’s two-time World Championships medallist Jennifer Oeser intends to compete at the Erdgas Mehrkampf-Meeting in Ratingen on dramatically changed and after a rainy Sunday 2008 Olympic champion Jessica Ennis took victory in this prestigious meeting both achieved world season best performances with 8483 points and 6689 points respectively For the first time the Czech city of Kladno was also included in the IAAF Combined Events Challenge series with the TNT-Fortuna meeting Winners here were Oleksiy Kasyanov (UKR) with 8381 points and Elisa Klucinova (CZE) with 6268 points. After 3 legs of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge Arnold is in the lead in the standings of these series with 24,553 points they have already completed 3 Decathlons for the 2010 series In the women’s standings Marina Goncharova (RUS) has the lead with 18,355 points followed by Hanna Melnychenko (UKR) with 17,818 points situated near the international airport of Dusseldorf,  is traditionally the most important meeting for the German athletes to qualify for the international championships Also this year the strongest German athlete in the Decathlon and Heptathlon will automatically qualify for the European Championships later this year in Barcelona.  DecathlonAlthough Germany has traditionally strong decathletes this year’s edition will miss a number of their strongest athletes due to injuries Michael Schrader are still not healed from their injuries who had to withdraw from his last competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing There is a little hope that they can return to competition later this year who was the best German in Götzis at 8069 points had to cancel his appearance in Ratingen and it is questionable whether he will recover in time for the European championships. The international field is headed by the 2009 World silver medallist who was 2nd in the 2009 IAAF Combined Events Challenge and winner of last year's edition in Ratingen is on the start list.  For both it will be their 3rd Decathlon in Europe in this early season The third Cuban athlete on the list is Alexis Chivas. The strongest German athlete in the field will be Norman Müller He was 2nd in last year’s meeting in Ratingen with a personal best score of 8295 points.  Although he is in a favourite position to qualify for the European Championships also much is expected from the young German athletes: Rico Freimuth They all must be able to break the 8000 points barrier to achieve the standards for the European championships HeptathlonIn the women’s Heptathlon an interesting competition is foreseen between the 2009 World silver medallist Jennifer Oeser and Lilli Schwarzkopf As the personal best score of both German athletes does not vary much (6496 points versus 6536) an tight battle for victory in this meeting can be expected.Schwarzkopf announced earlier that she should not compete during 2010 Her plans were to concentrate on finishing her sport studies The athlete who changed after nine years her club membership from LG Paderborn to LG Rhein-Wied  said on the decision to start this weekend: “I trained well and I would like to show that I am still there I feel strong enough to achieve a good performance in Ratingen.”The audience in the stadium will have special interest in their local favourite Jennifer Oeser Many will remember her spectacular 800m race during the World Championships in Berlin After she tumbled down she caught up the field and grabbed the silver medal in the championships The athlete from Leverkusen is very motivated.“6500 points Till now my best performance was always in Ratingen.” The 26 years old athlete already achieved the European standard of 6100 points in Götzis three weeks ago.Other athletes in the field with a P.R above 6.000 points are Ida Marcussen from Norway Briton Louise Hazel and Maren Schwerdtner from Germany From France Yasmani Omrani and Gabriela Kouassi are announced who is able to pass the 6.000 points barrier In Götzis she just failed to break this mark by 16 points.Juniors Traditionally also a junior meeting is scheduled during the Erdgas meeting For these athletes the goal is to qualify for the World Junior Championships in Moncton In the men’s Decathlon the favourite is the actual world leader the current world and European junior champion It is the first step for her to defend her World junior title of 2008.  Hans van Kuijen for the IAAF Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Kai Kazmirek charged into day two of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge meeting in Ratingen the same way he left day one: at full speed towards a second World Championships standard and onwards to an Olympic standard Verena Preiner led from start to finish to claim Ivona Dadic’s Austrian record Watched from the sidelines by 1996 Olympic decathlon silver medallist Frank Buseman Kazmirek clocked 14.14 to win the 110m hurdles just nine hundredths away from his PB of 14.05 Basile Rolnin also continued his form from the first day Mathias Brugger split the overnight leaders with 14.26 with Fredriech Pretorius in fourth with 14.41 Gael Querin took a tumble at an early hurdle although he continued with the competition world bronze medallist Kazmirek had extended his lead over Rolnin to almost 200 points Rolnin and Brugger would be expected to bring superior discus distances to those of Kazmirek and in the first round Rolnin threw 48.38m to lead the field Fredriech Pretorius with a PB of 43.63m and Brugger 43.36m And that was the case until the final round when Kazmirek launched a throw of 44.71m But that spurred on Brugger to 44.54m and – for his fifth PB of the weekend – 50.62m for Basile Rolnin The gap between first and second shrunk to just 73 points Just 20 centimetres separate the lifetime bests of Kazmirek and Rolnin in the pole vault With Kazmirek banking a safe early jump of 4.70m his path was clear for the rest of the pole vault Felix Hepperle was the only other man to go over 5.00m equalling his season’s best of 5.10m and unsuccessful at two attempts at 5.20m and one at 5.30m Any list of best javelin throws usually features a number of Germans But while there was no Estonian equivalent of Magnus Kirt to spoil the party in Ratingen Rolnin’s first-round throw of 58.61m was a PB and would have been enough to lead the field until Fredriech Pretorius’ third-round throw of 59.25m But Basile went out a 60.00m best in the second round and another lifetime improvement to 61.60m in the third round – the sub-par pole vault long forgotten Kazmirek hung on to the faster men in front of him and finished the 1500m in 4:41.72 enough to take him to a World Championships and Olympic qualifying score of 8444 the fourth highest mark of the year behind Götzis winner Damian Warner and runner-up Lindon Victor I’m happy,” he said of his performance and then after that I’ll go on holiday for four or five days Rolnin was being helped by teammate Querin to the performance of his life but with his decathlon dead in the water after the hurdles a PB by 118 points and a World Championships qualifying score a beautiful story because my last decathlon was two years ago here,” Rolnin said of his pole vault experience “There was an incident in the pole vault at the end of warm up My hamstring hurt and I don’t know what I can do at this moment you will take a little way to jump and just need one more’ and then I said – just javelin and the last race!” After finishing third behind Rolnin in 7872 “My coach just informed me we have a little event in Mauritius to do three events and try and sort out some technical stuff with the hurdles and the javelin After that it will be to the African Games in Morocco and hopefully we can get a better score at the African Games The long jump in the heptathlon had a low-key start with swirling winds of some 3 metres per second in both directions The first six-metre jump of the day came from Verena Preiner (6.16m) quickly followed by Nadine Broersen (6.02m) and 6.20m from Ivona Dadic Broersen improved to 6.20m in the third round Preiner had the longest throw in the first round of 48.03m ahead of the 50-metre-plus throwers Dadic (47.97m) and Broersen (46.65m) She edged closer to her lifetime best of 49.56m in the second round with 48.98m beating her old best by two centimetres to register 49.58m being coached throughout the event by the 2004 and 2008 Olympic javelin champion Andreas Thorkildsen with Broersen also improving to 47.32m in the final round Preiner continued to lead after six events some 100 points ahead of Anna Maiwald and Mareike Arndt Thorkildsen said: “It’s getting there it’s the first time I’ve seen her in competition It’s a long process of changing technique she’s had for many years Preiner took the 800m by the scruff of the neck running from the front and establishing several metres of a gap from Dadic by the time they had run 100m She increased that lead to 10 metres by the bell as Dadic was being caught by Yuki Yamasaki and eventually passed by both Arndt and Maiwald Preiner was rewarded with an 800m PB of 2:07.74 her second lifetime best heptathlon score of the season with 6591 and the addition of 39 points to Dadic’s Austrian record Dadic finished with a season’s best of 6461 It was the first time Preiner had finished ahead of Dadic in a combined events competition (excluding competitions where one of them was a non-finisher) Arndt and Yamasaki also recorded PBs in the 800 and Maiwald (with a PB of 6174) and Arndt (6160) finished fourth and fifth respectively behind Broersen in third (6232) so I’m really happy,” said Preiner “It was the first time I had a leader bib I was happy to wear it through the whole heptathlon and win it in the end I tried to have fun and bring all the events together Johnson-Thompson climbs world all-time list w.. Germany’s 2012 European champion Pascal Behrenbruch was a distant third overall with 7826 points Vetter lost her lead in the heptathlon after the first event on Sunday with two-time World Championships medallist Jennifer Oeser taking over in pole position after long jumping 6.26m to the Dutch woman’s 6.07m Claudia Rath was the best long jumper and went out to 6.57m But Vetter is one of the best javelin throwers among the top echelon of heptathletes and proved this when she launched her implement out to 52.75m the best throw of the day and just 35cm down on her best Oeser could only throw 45.03m and the lead changed hands again with Vetter having a total of 5569 and an advantage of 147 points ahead of the last event Rath dominated over two laps of the track and won in 2:08.91 more than three seconds faster than anyone else Vetter trudged round in 2:20.38 to finish eighth of the nine finishers with Oeser clocking 2:15.63 Vetter had enough in hand to emerge as the winner with 6387 81 points ahead of Oeser and 97 in front of third-placed Rath Schrader and Vetter lead at the end of the fi.. The folk-inspired Scottish group let strong melodies and dramatic landscapes guide their performance in north-west Germany heavy rain raised a stony scent that wafted through wide-open windows at the Friedenskirche in Ratingen on 9 September the smell mingled with the aroma of malt whisky Each of the 220 audience members received a welcoming dram before the concert by Scottish tenor saxophonist Matt Carmichael and his quintet at around the same time the musicians first met they have a distinctive sound that mixes contemporary jazz with impulses from the Scottish folk tradition The concert in Ratingen featured Carmichael with Fergus McCreadie (piano) Tom Potter (drums) and Charlie Stewart (fiddle) They produced a breathtakingly lyrical and expressive display of improvised music-making Carmichael’s saxophone voice surged into every molecule of the modern red-brick hall like a holy electric charge adding structure to the hazy sense of time Each tune melted into the next until Carmichael simply gave up announcing titles “We just decided in the moment what felt right to play Somebody would play a hint of a tune and we’d segue into it improvising in the folk style around strong melodic content Some of those melodies just came up in the gig That spirit of collective spontaneity was expressed through the melodic turn-taking and intertwining of instruments A dreamy atmosphere unfolded on stage and off stage “I find it easy to transport myself away and be emotive when I play,” Carmichael said “And I want my saxophone sound to comfort people Carmichael’s compositions blend that humanity with his deep reverence for Scotland’s coastal landscapes The dark hues on There Will Be Better Days recalled the dramatic “Folk music naturally references landscape,” he said All 440 eyes and ears were captivated by the gut-wrenching spine-tingling sentiments radiating from the stage Matt Carmichael has the power to break and lift hearts with every phrase His pleasing that the first car rated this year should have gone so far to address the safety issues that are emerging as top priorities,” said Euro NCAP secretary general All in all, the Yaris had to pass a frontal impact test with an oncoming deformable barrier at 50% the width of the car a frontal impact test with a rigid full width barrier a side impact test with a mobile deformable barrier a series of pedestrian tests and of course With six German decathletes who have scored over 8000 points and seven German heptathletes who have gone over 6000 points the IAAF Combined Events Challenge meeting in Ratingen on Saturday and Sunday (15-16) looks likely be an all-German affair what might sound boring at first at the Ruhrgas DLV Mehrkampf is actually one of the most anticipated athletics events on German soil this year Ratingen is the last chance for the German athletes to qualify for the IAAF World Championships this summer and only the Decathlon world leader Michael Schrader who scored 8427 points in Ulm last month but will be a spectator in Ratingen can be relatively sure to of a ticket to Moscow set a good mark of 8293 points in Eugene last month but the event didn’t count as qualification event and his main goal will be the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tampere Johannes Hock won’t be competing in Ratingen either but 2012 European champion Pascal Behrenbruch and Rico Freimuth Neither Behrenbruch nor Rico Freimuth finished their first Decathlon of the season in cold and rainy Götzis three weeks ago but both have since been striving to get into better shape for Ratingen Pascal Behrenbruch went back to Tallinn in Estonia where he trains with Andrey Nazarov “He seems to be at a different level than before Gotzis,” said Germany’s Decathlon head coach Rainer Pottel Pottel thinks Behrenbruch could be in shape for a personal best which would mean an improvement to his mark of 8558 points which won him the European title last year The 28-year-old from Frankfurt might also be motivated by some sharp remarks that Schrader made about him “I think he can achieve the standard for Moscow He didn’t look in top shape in Gotzis,” said Schrader recently “Maybe he only said this to make me angry,” explained Behrenbruch who added that they actually have a good relationship but there is no way he would be missing in Ratingen “My training results are even better than ahead of Gotzis; and in Gotzis I was in great shape.” Now Freimuth has to hope that his back won’t cause any more problems “I have received about 40 injections during the last two weeks Another strong contender for a ticket to Moscow is Frankfurt’s Jan Felix Knobel he achieved the standard for the Olympics in Ratingen he might be on his way to Moscow and with recent new bests in the 110m Hurdles and Discus and the former World junior champion will travel to Ratingen full of confidence Two German athletes have already proven their fighting spirit in the bad conditions in Götzis: Norman Müller and Kai Kazmirek were the only Germans to finish the Decathlon there Kazmirek finished the competition even though he failed to clear a height in the Pole Vault and the 21-year-old might feel a bit less pressure than the others because he is already qualified for the European Athletics U23 Championships South Africa’s Willem Coertzen will try to challenge the German athletes on their home ground and has a best of 8244 points; Austria’s Dominik Distelberger is aiming to break the 8000 points barrier for the first time while Gael Querin from France has already broken that barrier when he came fifth in the 2012 European Athletics Championships with 8098 points Julia Machtig returns to Ratingen with good memories it was in Ratingen last year where she qualified for the Olympic Games With Germany’s best heptathletes of the past few years Machtig is the favourite to win in Ratingen she will be looking for a better start into the competition than in Gotzis where she didn’t even cross the finish line in the 100m Hurdles Kira Biesenbach was the German sunshine in Gotzis despite the rain and the cold: The 20-year-old improved her best by almost 300 points to 6134 points The 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships bronze medallist has already qualified for the European Athletics U23 Championships Kira really did spread a good mood in Gotzis,” said Germany’s Heptathlon head coach Wolfgang Kühne why shouldn’t she try for the A standard for Moscow?” Claudia Rath and Maren Schwerdtner are aiming for that as well and they have already proven in the past that they are capable of collecting more than 6150 points Rath set her best of 6210 points at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona while Schwerdtner’s best is 6167 points The fifth athlete on Kühne’s list of likely Moscow contenders is Carolin Schäfer The 2008 World junior champion hasn’t quite been in the shape of last season when she improved to 6072 points but even if she doesn’t make it to Moscow she can still think about a trip to Tampere Two international athletes will be competing against 11 Germans but they have a good chance to make it into the top five With Olympic selection deadlines fast approaching part of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge on 25-26 June is set to be the last chance for some of the biggest names in combined events to book their tickets to the Rio Olympic Games World and Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill leads the heptathlon field took the world title at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 in just her second heptathlon after returning from maternity leave But since her triumphant heptathlon last August Ennis-Hill has been plagued by injury woes and had to pull out of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge meeting in Gotzis last month The 30-year-old tested her form in four events in Manchester two weeks ago with promising results Ennis-Hill will have to fend off some tough competition from local shores Germany’s Carolin Schafer scored a PB of 6557 in Gotzis last month and will be looking to gain the mental advantage of beating the Olympic champion ahead of the Games in front of a home crowd Two other Germans having to fight for the remaining ticket to Rio are 2009 world silver medallist Jennifer Oeser and Olympic silver medallist Lilli Schwarzkopf Oeser fell just 29 points shy of the 6200 qualifying standard in Gotzis while Schwarzkopf will need to improve her season’s best of 6088 by more than 100 points Both will also likely need to surpass the 6290 score achieved in Gotzis by Claudia Rath Yorgelis Rodriguez could also challenge for a podium place making her the second-ranked heptathlete in this year’s field based on season’s bests Austria’s Ivona Dadic missed out on the Olympic qualifying standard by a mere four points on her way to setting a national record of 6196 in Gotzis while Norway’s Ida Marcussen will be looking to improve on her result from Kladno a couple of weeks ago The men’s decathlon will provide several storylines to follow While the main focus will of course be on the pursuit of Olympic qualifying standards national team selections will be another line of action the German decathlon team would be among the toughest national teams to make But while five Germans in the field hold PBs higher than the Olympic qualifying standard of 8100 only two of them have surpassed that mark during the qualification period Kai Kazmirek scored 8318 to finish third behind Damian Warner and Kevin Mayer in Gotzis last month world bronze medallist Rico Freimuth and 2008 world junior champion Jan-Felix Knobel will both have to improve on their performances in the Austrian combined events Mecca as the pair failed to post a single legal mark in the long jump And as if two German no-measures in Gotzis weren’t bad enough Arthur Abele followed suit when failing to post a mark in the shot put the European indoor silver medallist had started out promisingly with a strong 10.83 over 100m and a lifetime best 7.57m leap in the long jump after injury ruled him out for the entirety of last year’s outdoor season The fifth German bidding for a ticket to Rio is 2012 European champion Pascal Behrenbruch The 31-year-old was due to compete last month in Marburg one of the three qualifying meetings identified by the German federation citing ‘muscular issues’ as the reason but has been struggling with form in recent years His season’s best of 7826 from Ratingen last year won’t be enough to get him on the plane to Rio Leonel Suarez has a knack for producing his best in Olympic years as his bronze medals from Beijing 2008 and London 2012 prove who finished just 76 points behind Suarez at the 2012 Olympics is still chasing the qualifying standard for Rio The 34-year-old holds the Belgian record of 8515 but has only completed two decathlons since the 2012 Olympics Dutch duo Pelle Rietveld and Ingmar Vos have both have scored higher than 8200 in the past but struggled with injury niggles earlier in the season A big 73.03m javelin PB from Rietveld last month looks promising while Vos will be looking to complete his first decathlon of 2016 after failing to finish his two previous attempts Schrader and Vetter take the honours in Ratin.. Rise and Spinola victorious at the Multistars.. Canada's Warner and Theisen-Eaton win again i.. Cachova and Rise show their class with wins i.. World and Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill will make her first ever appearance at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting when she competes at the IAAF Combined Events Challenge competition on 25-26 June The 30-year-old Briton had been hoping to compete at the Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis last weekend but a minor hamstring set-back forced her to withdraw from the competition in the Austrian city earlier this month It will be her only heptathlon before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games “We are very proud that Jessica Ennis-Hill has committed to compete in Ratingen,” said DLV event director Marco Buxmann “It also gives the German heptathletes a great challenge ahead of the Olympics.” who finished third in Gotzis last weekend with a PB of 6557 will be among Ennis-Hill’s opponents in Ratingen along with Olympic silver medallist Lilli Schwarzkopf 2009 world silver medallist Jennifer Oeser and Claudia Rath Jessica Ennis-Hill and Arthur Abele produced dominant victories at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf Meeting a part of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge world and Olympic champion Ennis-Hill cemented her status as the world’s best heptathlete ahead of her title defence at the Rio Olympic Games by tallying 6733 her best result since her victory at the 2012 Olympics set a world-leading mark with his PB of 8605 Ennis-Hill finished day one with a solid 188-point lead over German Carolin Schafer With weather conditions in Ratingen slightly improving On Saturday night the Briton said she was in her best shape since 2012 but that she wasn’t ready to reveal all of her proverbial cards just yet She began to in the opening event of day two when she soared to a lifetime best of 6.63m in the second round of the long jump she produced a little jump before putting her game face back on for the javelin Ennis was already 49 up on her result from last year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing and didn’t look as if she was going to slow down She produced a solid series in the javelin with a best of 44.37m almost two metres farther than her best effort in the Bird’s Nest Ennis-Hill finished off with a 2:11.46 run and outright win in the 800m for a 6733-point total 64 better than at last summer’s World Championships and just 32 behind Brianne Theisen-Eaton’s world lead from Gotzis last month but produced another promising pre-Rio performance with 6476 to finish second with her third-best score ever The 25-year-old German reached 6.27m in the long jump just four centimetres shy of her personal best before throwing a lifetime best of 50.73m in the javelin A 2:16.93 run in the 800m completed the day for her Despite a huge 47.28m in the javelin – an improvement of more than five metres from her performance in Gotzis last month – Jennifer Oeser’s hopes of achieving the 6200-point Olympic qualifying standard slipped away but remains hopeful that her 6308 tally from Beijing will be enough for selectors to award her the third ticket to Rio alongside Schafer and Claudia Rath the competition continued where it left off yesterday with the two Germans Abele and Kai Kazmirek waging a close battle for victory Kazmirek began the day 125 points ahead with 4391 but Abele narrowed the gap with a 14.09 performance in the 110m hurdles He said it wasn’t the smoothest of races “Three times I thought that’s it But the main thing is that I got those points.” but it was always going to be close with Abele known for his abilities in the throws He confirmed exactly that with a 46.20m effort in the discus to improve his lifetime best by more than one-and-a-half metres to retake the lead with 6023 Kazmirek wasn’t satisfied with a sub-par 40.59m performance The battle for the top spot became even more interesting in the pole vault where Kazmirek was the only athlete to clear 5.00m while Abele narrowly missed at the height after success at 4.90m Just one point separated the pair heading into the last two events Abele went all-in after a first-round no-throw and was rewarded with his third PB of the competition The 29-year-old launched the javelin to a meeting record of 71.89m to move 188 points clear of Kazmirek Abele knew he was on course to better his 8477 career best set at the 2014 European Championships He clocked 4:24.12 for 784 points to improve his personal best beyond the 8600-point barrier and to succeed Canada’s Damian Warner (8523) as the world leader Kazmirek improved his season’s best to 8323 Dutchman Pelle Rietveld was a distant third with 7659 Ennis-Hill and Kazmirek the overnight leaders.. action at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting Competing under dark rainy skies that witnessed both fields thinning dramatically over the course of the first day Ennis-Hill tallied 3990 points in the heptathlon while Germany’s Kazmirek leads the decathlon with 4391 In true British fashion and probably used to the weather from her native Sheffield world and Olympic champion Ennis-Hill battled the elements admirably opening her competition with the fastest 100m hurdles time of the day clocking 13.13 Behind her was Germany’s Carolin Schafer with 13.48 leaving Ennis-Hill with 1105 points and a 52-point lead after the first event The pair was trailed by the Swiss duo of Michelle Zeltner and Linda Zublin While the two favourites produced promising results despite the conditions who is still chasing the Rio qualification standard of 6200 points almost crashed out of the competition before it even started The German took a tumble but managed to stay on her feet to finish in 15.21 for 814 points more than 200 down from her result in Gotzis last month Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodriguez had an even worse start The weather took no mercy during the high jump either who decided to continue despite her zero point tally in the hurdles turned frustration into motivation as she equalled her personal best of 1.87m a good performance given the rainy conditions Ennis-Hill extended her lead over Schafer with a third time clearance at 1.84m (2134 points) Oeser bettered her season’s best to 1.81m to move back within reach of compatriot Lilli Schwarzkopf and the Olympic qualifier Schwarzkopf’s 1.72m meant that after two events the German pair were sitting tight with 1805 and 1845 points respectively one of Schafer’s stronger disciplines The 25-year-old hit a lifetime best of 14.56m with her first effort to up her tally to 2800 Oeser and Schwarzkopf continued their battle for the third spot on the German Olympic team While Oeser’s 14.23m was only 6cm shy of her personal best Schwarzkopf remained almost a metre behind hers with a 14.15m best on the day Ennis-Hill capped off her opening day with a 23.36 meeting record in the 200m for a solid 3990 first day total just 15 points shy of her first day total in Beijing last year and leaving her on course for 6600 points Schafer clocked 23.78 to finish the day with 3802 120 points behind her first day tally from Gotzis but she’s already secured her Rio ticket.  With Schwarzkopf’s withdrawal before the 200m German is focused on Oeser’s Olympic ticket chase She’s currently fourth with 3506 points behind Zeltner is on course for the Rio qualification with 3570 Fellow Swiss Zublin dropped out after the high jump while Austria’s Ivona Dadic pulled up in the 200m Even worse was the shrinkage in the decathlon field who was hoping to have a last stab at the Olympic standard of 8100 points didn’t line up as he is expecting the birth of his first child this weekend it was once again Kazmirek who got out of the blocks the fastest while world championship bronze medallist Rico Freimuth and Arthur Abele both followed with 10.95 which already saw him score 8318 in Gotzis last month A 7.57m leap extended his tally to 1860 points who was knocked out Gotzis after fouling out in the long jump But another German with three fouls in Gotzis The 2008 world junior champion rolled his ankle on his second jump forcing him out of the competition and putting an end to his Rio ambitions struggled with the wet and windy conditions and could only manage 6.80m – 80cm shy of his season’s best from March.  Abele wasn’t about to gamble here after a solid 7.48m long jump moved him into second place with 1802 points He reached a modest 14.29m in the first round before improving his lifetime best to 15.79m in the second to move into the lead with 2640 points whose strengths lie more on the track and in the jumps Freimuth reached 14.57m to remain on course for 8100 points Unfortunately the trend of drop-outs continued Despite reaching personal bests of 14.72m and 13.60m in the shot put both Gonzalo Barroilhet (CHI) and Jan Dolezal (CZE) decided to retire after the shot put Kazmirek topped 2.07m in the high jump to regain the lead with 3504 points 79 up on Abele who managed 1.98m with his 13th jump of the competition Friemuth cleared 1.89m but struggling with a calf injury didn’t reach the start line of the 400m  While his retirement means more headaches for German selectors Kazmirek provided them with reason to be optimistic as the Rio Games approach The 25-year-old clocked 48.48 to record his fourth victory of the day and finish with 4391 leaving him on course to threaten his 8471 career best but will be looking to eat up the gap on day two especially in his favoured throwing events Germany’s Patrick Scherfose is a distant third with 3847 The weather forecast calls for improved conditions on Sunday “When we started to develop these tests [for lane-keep assist] our understanding was that vehicle manufacturers would not bring these systems in if they would upset their customers” Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen told Wheels at an Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) media event this week Yet with lane support systems – such as lane-departure warning emergency lane-keep assist and lane-trace assist – now necessary for a five-star safety rating Euro NCAP and ANCAP are updating their protocols to include real-world testing Van Ratingen was asked about a few recent five-star models – including the Chery Omoda 5, Isuzu D-Max and MG 4 – that have aggressive emergency lane-keep inputs designed to ace the program’s lab tests with little attention paid to real-world functionality We are kind of upset that the vehicle manufacturers answer questions from you guys to say that Euro NCAP is forcing them [to implement LSS] “I think we should not generalise the whole ADAS [Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems] There are different elements within the ADAS family and some of them are very effective other ones I would certainly agree have issues in the implementation in the vehicle; how the vehicle manufacturer has put the systems into the car” our understanding was that vehicle manufacturers would not bring these systems in if they would upset their customers So we focused on evaluating whether – in critical scenarios where the system should actually intervene – they will actually do a good job; that’s what we test actually in Euro NCAP and ANCAP “So we really focus on: ‘Let’s imagine a crash is about to happen and that’s the basis on which we give the five stars” he explains before saying that Euro NCAP has had tough discussions with automakers about this exact issue many vehicle manufacturers basically used that [test] as a blueprint for the system So [some manufacturers] basically said: ‘Okay “And because of the development times getting shorter and shorter and shorter – now they are basically back to two years – what we see happening is that they are not properly evaluated in the real world” “We are kind of upset that the vehicle manufacturers answer questions from you guys to say that Euro NCAP is forcing them [to implement LSS] we actually assumed that they would actually have the ethical courage to actually implement a good system But they went for it just to get the points” “So now it’s back to our action to actually adapt the test procedure and to include real-world testing” with Euro NCAP – and by extension ANCAP – upgrading the test procedure to “really force [manufacturers] to include driver intention much more than what they had done before” Michiel says he’s “of the opinion that this is not Euro NCAP’s job” believing strongly it’s up to manufacturers to ensure these systems are helpful and don’t give false positives suggesting that second-gen systems emerging over the next two to three years should be much improved Euro NCAP and ANCAP have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) on ANCAP’s 30th anniversary updating the agreement first signed in 1999 The two independent crash-testing bodies will continue to work closely on future safety incentives including evaluating light trucks and heavy goods vehicles with the Australian body looking into testing full-size American pick-ups that are growing in popularity locally HMD Global announced that it is planning of bringing Nokia brand back home which means a certain relocation of its services back to Europe the software team of Nokia Mobile working on security and other updates is now located in Ratingen The offices of this new team are located in the ex-Nokia facilities and the team is working on bringing all the security patches and software updates from Google The team is doing almost all the tests needed for Nokia smartphones to be updated but the regional adjustments are done by local teams across the world Thanks to the fact that Nokia smartphones are running Android One software platform and
