Against the backdrop of launching the Group brands Omoda and Jaecoo
Chery wants to strengthen its presence in Europe
Specifically, Chery plans to double the number of employees in Raunheim to 120 within the next twelve months. Opened near Frankfurt Airport in 2018

also in the form of development partnerships
and hardware and mechanical product design are among the central areas of responsibility
the experts take on extensive project management tasks for various business units within the Chery Group
this includes the ‘Advanced Design Studio’
which “provides creative input for almost all of the Group’s global brands” – meaning that work is also carried out in Raunheim that is not limited to Europe
“Our strategy in and for Europe is a long-term one with a clear focus on customers and their requirements,” says Tüting
“We are firmly convinced that the investment in research and development in Germany and Europe will pay off because Chery will be able to develop solutions that are both innovative and tailored to the needs of European consumers – in terms of technology
Chery plans to roll out its Omoda and Jaecoo brands in nine key European and smaller markets
This year will see the launch of the Omoda 5 as a combustion engine and a BEV offshoot
The Omoda 5 EV prices are expected to start at around 37,000 euros in Germany
The compact crossover SUV will be launched step by step on the most important European markets in 2024 before the Jaecoo 7 off-road SUV on the same platform follows shortly afterwards

Lufthansa Systems is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year
The airline IT specialist is looking back proudly at the many milestones in its history of shaping the digitalization of the airline industry
Lufthansa outsourced its IT department to its newly founded subsidiary
which has experienced a remarkable development in recent years
“We now employ around 2,400 people at our locations in 16 countries and
have established ourselves as one of the leading IT providers in the airline industry,” said Olivier Krueger
we offer our more than 350 customers worldwide a comprehensive range of IT solutions
Although digitalization was still in its infancy and the internet was still uncharted territory in the year the company was founded
Lufthansa Systems lived by its slogan “We’re into IT” from the very beginning
Thanks to its many years of experience within the Lufthansa Group
the company was able to keep its finger on the pulse of Europe’s most successful airline and acquire extensive technical expertise
This gave rise to an impressive product portfolio that covers many of an airline’s processes on the flight deck
Lufthansa’s pioneering role soon enabled Lufthansa Systems to establish modern and efficiency-enhancing IT solutions across the entire aviation industry
LOT Polish Airlines was the first customer that saw Lufthansa Systems break into the external airline market
Lufthansa Systems’ innovative solutions gradually became established on the worldwide market
the IT specialist was able to support customers of all sizes and business with its solutions
Offering groundbreaking innovations such as FlyNet
which first got off the ground with Lufthansa in 2003
which significantly enhanced the efficiency of revenue accounting
Lufthansa Systems became an industry pioneer at an early stage
The development of the paperless flight deck was another game changer
as paper maps were gradually replaced by digital programs and modern apps that display weather
airspace and traffic information in real time
a new era of inflight entertainment began with the first wireless solution
which enabled passengers to access onboard entertainment on their own devices for the first time
Lufthansa Systems is also one of the market’s leading providers in network planning
covers the entire process from network planning
flight planning and codeshares to crew management until the day of operations and provides the ideal basis for decision-making by connecting data in a smart way
Lido Flight 4D is a Lufthansa Systems solution that helps customers to optimize their flight routes and thus reduce flight times and fuel consumption
This in turn makes an important contribution to airlines’ environmental efficiency
as less fuel consumption means fewer carbon emissions
Airlines can also reduce their environmental footprint by eliminating all paper-based maps and documentation for navigation
“Based on these developments and the experience it has gained along the way
Lufthansa Systems today is an important and reliable partner when it comes to digitalization and aviation expertise
Leveraging our strong portfolio of innovative initiatives
we will continue our tradition of shaping the future of digital aviation,” said Dr
The Aviation Campus reflecting a strategic realignment
the former Lufthansa Systems AG was realigned and the infrastructure part of the business was sold to IBM
By focusing on the airline sector and implementing an agile set-up
the company is in a position to quickly and profitably apply its IT expertise for the benefit of its customers
Lufthansa Systems established the Aviation Campus and thus created an environment enabling digital innovation that promotes the exchange of ideas and the exploitation of synergies
Current projects and developments include migrating products to a cloud-based platform and supporting airlines in harmonizing their IT systems in operations
Applying the Total Mission Optimization (TMO) approach
Lufthansa Systems is further optimizing its market-leading Lido solutions for dispatchers and flight deck crews
This achieves a strong integration of functionality and data
which enables the airline operation center and the flight crew to collaborate in an even more effective way
The smart use of data is one of the key success factors in the future of aviation
Lufthansa Systems and the start-up company zeroG are jointly working on projects to avoid delays in ground processes and are investigating ways to make the work of ops controllers easier
Lufthansa Systems has thus evolved into an important integration partner and consultant both within and outside the Lufthansa Group
The aim of the company’s growing consulting unit is to optimize everyday flight operations processes and design them in a way that makes them more profitable
the company focuses on all developments in the field of airline IT

15 compelling projects from nine countries around the world
Leave it to Amsterdam to devote an entire architecture biennale to bikes. The cycle-friendly city recently opened its second Bicycle Architecture Biennale, and it’s an expansive look at how bike-friendly architecture can lead to more thoughtfully designed cities
Curated by Dutch studio Next Architects, the exhibition features 15 projects from nine countries, all sharing different solutions for making cities more amenable to cyclists. Some, like the Netherlands’ Utrecht Central Station that has 13,500 bike parking spots
are part of a robust cycling infrastructure
like the five-mile aerial bike lane in Xiamen
are just the beginning of a bigger plan to make cycling a central part of a city’s transportation plan
Some of the projects like a bike path that cuts through a water in Limburg
are gorgeous pieces of architecture that almost double as art
The goal of the Biennale is to not just showcase clever solutions
but also present case studies that demonstrate how designing with cyclists in mind often leads to more livable cities in general
The exhibition is on show in Amsterdam through June 21 and then heads on a global tour of “major architectural and citymaking events”. Learn more about this year’s event here

Chinese carmaker Chery has begun making its way into Europe
The first foothold is a design and development centre Chery is to open in the German town of Raunheim
The newly founded Chery Europe GmbH will take up their work there next year and Chery said that importing an all-electric model by 2020 is “very likely”
the carmaker stressed that any plug-in models to arrive in Europe would need to be “competitive with the leading European manufacturers in terms of quality
The first electrified car to make it to these shores is most likely the Exceed TX SUV
Chery had showcased a version of it at the IAA in Frankfurt last year and Tongyue Yin
the Chery chairman referred to the launch when saying: “At last year’s Frankfurt motor show
Now we’re going to execute our plans in and for Europe.”
In concrete terms these plans include hiring 30 – 50 employees to wo/man the new centre near Frankfurt Airport for a start
Chery is actively looking for local staff and says the Raunheim site will focus on design and development
as well as sales and marketing of plug-in hybrid and electric cars
Chery has not made any plans public for a production site in Europe so any of their electrified vehicles would be made in China. There, the Exeed TX has been on sale since June
both as a combustion and plug-in hybrid version
a 110 kW combustion motor and a 85 kW electric motor bring the system performance to a total of 160 kW
Technical details to the planned all-electric vehicle for the European market have not been released

Chery has become the latest automaker to reimagine the minivan as they’ve unveiled the new Journeo concept. It’s a futuristic, crossover-inspired MPV that was created by the company’s design and development center in Raunheim
Looking like a hardcore version of Honda’s Space-Hub concept
the Journeo is billed as an “adventure van” and that certainly appears to be the case as it features a height-adjustable air suspension as well as meaty airless tires
They’re joined by flowing bodywork and a slick greenhouse that includes a glass tailgate
More: Chery Hunting Wild Concept Previews New Wagon With Solid-State Batteries
The concept measures 204.7 inches (5,200 mm) long and this makes it slightly larger than the Chrysler Pacifica
the Journeo has a modular front trunk that houses seats
The roof rack also sports solar panels and a retractable awning
the interior is the star of the show thanks to its lounge-like setup
The front seats can rotate 180 degrees to face rear passengers
while the rear bench looks like a high-end sofa
The latter can transform into a bed as the backrests swing out of the way to provide an uninterrupted view out the rear window
Rounding out the highlights are a panoramic glass roof and a suede-covered floor
The concept also has retractable side steps to improve entry and egress
Another interesting touch is the removable door panels
Chery was coy on powertrain details, but said the concept has a hybrid powertrain that consists of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine
The automaker also mentioned a driver assistance system that scans your surroundings to aid in parking as well as support “navigation at high speeds.”

Measurements conducted by the Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation
Environment and Geology (HLNUG) in recent years have shown that Frankfurt International Airport is a major source of ultrafine particles and that these can disperse over long distances across the city
In collaboration with experts at the HLNUG
researchers at Goethe University Frankfurt have now discovered that the ultrafine particles partly consist of synthetic jet oils
The research team has deduced that emissions from lubrication oils must be lowered in addition to those from kerosene in order to reduce the concentration of ultrafine particles and thus improve air quality
Ultrafine particles form during combustion processes
for example when wood or biomass is burned
large airports are a major source of these ultrafine particles
which are less than 100 millionths of a millimetre (100 nanometres) in size
they can penetrate deep into the lower respiratory tract
cause inflammatory reactions in the tissue
ultrafine particles are suspected of being capable of triggering cardiovascular diseases
the Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation
Environment and Geology (HLNUG) has been measuring the number and size of ultrafine particles at various air monitoring stations in the vicinity of Frankfurt International Airport
for example in the Frankfurt suburb of Schwanheim and in Raunheim
scientists led by Professor Alexander Vogel at Goethe University Frankfurt analysed the chemical composition of the ultrafine particles and came across a group of organic compounds which
The research team has now corroborated this finding by means of further chemical measurements of the ultrafine particles: the particles originated to a significant degree from synthetic jet oils and were particularly prevalent in the smallest particle classes
Such lubrication oils can enter the exhaust plume of an aircraft’s engines
for example through vents where nanometre-sized oil droplets and gaseous oil vapours are not fully retained
the researchers also succeeded in reproducing the formation of ultrafine particles from lubrication oils
a common engine lubrication oil was first evaporated at around 300 °C in a hot gas stream
which simulated the exhaust plume of an aircraft engine
The number-size distribution of the freshly formed particles was then measured
Professor for Atmospheric Environmental Analytics at the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences of Goethe University Frankfurt
the gaseous synthetic esters are supersaturated and form the nuclei for new particles that can then grow fast to around 10 nanometres in size
constitute a large fraction of the ultrafine particles produced by aircraft engines
The previous assumption that ultrafine particles originate primarily from sulphur and aromatic compounds in kerosene is evidently incomplete
lowering lubrication oil emissions from jet engines holds significant potential for reducing ultrafine particles.”
The experiments show that the formation of ultrafine particles in jet engines is not confined to the combustion of kerosene alone
Potential mitigation measures should take this into consideration
This means that using low-sulphur kerosene or switching to sustainable aviation fuel cannot eliminate all the pollution caused by ultrafine particles
A comprehensive scientific study by the Federal State of Hesse
will examine pollution from ultrafine particles and their impact on health
the results from the current study can help to identify airport-specific particles and derive possible mitigation measures
