Sign Up Company Profile Alternative Energy The refreshed Model Y brought with it lots of changes to the exterior and interior - but there’s more to it than just that Tesla is doing something completely different than its other vehicles with the new Model Y and that’s how regenerative braking works The new Model Y has an updated Dynamics Control menu that has a new deceleration option At quick glance this appears to be a renamed regenerative braking label Tesla has also added two additional options in the Traction Control Mode that aren’t available in the previous-gen Model Y Let’s dig into what each of these features does as we believe many people will be pleased with the way regenerative braking now works in the new Model Y where you’ll find the familiar Chill and Standard Modes Tesla has introduced a new Deceleration category for the new Model Y This category offers two options: Standard (the default setting) and Reduced The Reduced setting adjusts how quickly the vehicle slows down when you release the accelerator pedal this isn’t just another name for regenerative braking Tesla has changed how they apply regenerative braking in the new Model Y Tesla previously offered two levels of regenerative braking which determined how much regen would be applied when you lifted your foot off the accelerator Some new EV drivers struggled with the normal regenerative braking mode due to the amount of deceleration Tesla removed the low regen option because it negatively impacted range and increased wear on the vehicle’s brakes unnecessarily Tesla has only applied regenerative braking when the accelerator is released and tapping the brake pedal would always activate the physical brakes Tesla has made changes that allow regenerative braking to activate either when the accelerator pedal is released or when the brake pedal is pressed That means that sometimes the vehicle’s physical brakes won’t activate when you tap the brake pedal — instead Drivers now have the option to choose between normal or reduced deceleration when lifting off the accelerator pedal which essentially means high or low levels of regenerative braking are being applied the vehicle decides whether to continue using regenerative braking or use the vehicle’s physical brakes depending on how hard the pedal is pressed This change removes the efficiency loss associated with low-level regenerative braking in older models because regen can again be applied when the driver uses the vehicle’s brake pedal It’s really the best of both worlds Drivers can now have the vehicle apply low levels of regen when the accelerator is lifted and still benefit from full regen because it is enabled again when the brake pedal is used We still recommend drivers get used to normal regen using just the accelerator pedal since it introduces the ability to mostly drive with just one pedal this new feature is exclusive to the latest Model Y so we won’t see this feature coming in a future update The Model Y is the first Tesla to apply regenerative braking when the brake pedal is used but given how much it eases the transition to EVs we expect it to roll out in future models as well Brake system in New Model Y has the freedom to use either electric motor or mechanical brake when you push the brake pedalThis brings you maximum efficiency, consistency in pedal behavior & improved stability pic.twitter.com/rIwOUxwpXU Tesla has also made some changes to the new Model Y’s traction control The Model Y used to have the option to enable Off-Road Assist and Slip Start The new Slippery Surface mode debuted with the Cybertruck It’s designed to improve the vehicle's handling on roads or surfaces that are slick with water your vehicle will closely monitor each wheel sensor for slippage and automatically apply additional torque where needed—essentially very fancy torque vectoring to maintain control It is a more active approach to how Tesla normally handles active traction control - and it does consume additional energy to keep this active I’ve personally noticed about 10% additional energy usage when Slippery Surfaces is active We’d expect a similar exchange with the Model Y where you trade a bit of efficiency for better and more precise handling when Slippery Surface is activated keeps the same overall package from the previous-Gen Model Y This allows wheels to spin and also balances torque between the front and rear motors It’s quite effective in rough and soft surfaces where one side of the vehicle may lose traction Off-Road Assist also provides more gradual torque control which can help when trying to crawl the vehicle over rocky surfaces Off-Road Assist will disable automatically at higher speeds and also disables Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Avoidance and Autopilot and FSD are disabled while it is active The Slip Start option was available on all variants of the Model Y which helps to dislodge it if you manage to get it stuck in mud It seems likely that Slip Start is probably further down in the menu - rather than being removed completely These changes to the new Model Y should please a ton of drivers especially if they’re new to Tesla Subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date on the latest Tesla news There are a few features to keep in mind when taking your Tesla through a car wash, but Tesla’s Car Wash Mode makes it easy by enabling or disabling several features for you These settings don’t only prevent damage to your vehicle such as locking the charge port door so that it doesn’t automatically open when a cleaning brush touches it but they also improve the experience by recirculating the air in the vehicle to prevent cleaning chemical smells from coming in Car Wash Mode makes it easy by giving you a checklist of items and their real-time status When activated from Controls > Service > Car Wash Mode Locks the charge port door to prevent accidental opening Enables easy access to the Fold Mirrors and Free Roll options (you can also put your vehicle in neutral through the gear stalk) While Car Wash Mode monitors more than a handful of items it doesn’t continuously check the status of your windows the vehicle will automatically roll up any open windows it won’t alert you if a window has been lowered after Car Wash Mode was enabled This could spell disaster for your vehicle's interior demonstrating what happened to his friend and requesting that Tesla add open windows to the list of flags in Car Wash Mode noticed the post and decided to take action offering to pass on the suggestion to the vehicle software team While Troy’s response doesn’t confirm the feature being added in a future update it’ll at least be put in front of the software team to potentially address Tesla could add this window-specific solution in several ways Tesla could add this as another on-screen flag while the vehicle is in Car Wash Mode simply alerting the driver that there’s a window open they could also go one step further and lock the rear windows to prevent accidental opening while Car Wash Mode is enabled Tesla could present an on-screen button that pops up when a user tries to open a window while Car Wash Mode is activated We’re interested to see what Tesla would do here as these little quality-of-life changes really improve the end-user experience What else would you like to see added to Car Wash Mode Tesla offers a range of home energy products — from the widely used Wall Connector to the Powerwall and the innovative Solar Roof a unique residential development in Houston combines all of these technologies — and more — to move toward energy self-sufficiency located in Oaks of Shady Acres and built by Utopia Homes each designed using Tesla technology to be self-sufficient Utopia has equipped the homes with Solar Roofs and Wall Connectors to complete the entire ecosystem Tesla’s Solar Roof replaces traditional roofing materials while doubling as a clean energy source during daylight hours The best part is that it mimics the look of conventional shingles while improving durability and longevity Any excess energy generated is stored in the home’s Powerwall 3 units Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector which can charge any EV equipped with either a NACS or CCS port (through a J1772 adapter) If you added on a Cybertruck with Powershare (more vehicles will support Powershare in the future) you’d have a backup system that would last an extremely long time on batteries alone A Powerwall 3 stores about 13.5 kWh of energy while a Cybertruck has a battery pack of 123 kWh which is roughly equivalent to about nine Powerwalls the Cybertruck could be used as a “mobile battery pack,” which can get additional energy from Superchargers and bring it back to the home if there’s an extended power outage Utopia markets these homes with “100% energy security,” - but they’re still grid-connected they appear to have made quite a point with this - as many people in Texas with its notoriously unstable electricity grid - were excited to get into these homes.  so they’re not entirely green and disconnected This likely comes down to the fact that powering an induction range alongside a heat pump in the winter could draw more energy than Powerwall 3 is capable of outputting instantaneously These 11 homes attracted a lot of attention - according to a broker working on Utopia’s team they had requests to see or buy these homes coming from across the country these homes are about $150,000 higher than Houston’s median list pricing for similarly sized townhomes but the benefits are clear for many buyers who will recoup these additional costs over the home’s life Utopia has acknowledged the demand for Tesla-powered and future-proofed homes like these and is already planning to build more in the future This is an excellent showcase of what an electric-powered future could look like and we’re excited to see more of these types of homes and neighborhoods in the future There are a few features to keep in mind when taking your Tesla through a car wash, but Tesla’s Car Wash Mode makes … Tesla offers a range of home energy products — from the widely used Wall Connector to the Powerwall and the innovative… With most vehicles moving on to Tesla’s 2025.14 Spring Update, we’re now taking a look at all the undocumented featu… Tesla has issued a strong denial in response to a Wall Street Journal report (Paywall) which claimed that Tesla’s Boar… Tesla’s Megapack is rapidly becoming a key component in energy storage and grid modernization efforts worldwide. This poll received over 1,100 votes with the overwhelming consensus being 'no' This has to be something for TDM or some new LTM Even before Riot Games officially revealed Regen Shields After they were originally leaked in the Episode 9 Act III trailer "This has to be something for TDM or some new LTM [limited time mode]; this won't cut it in comp or unrated" Reddit user dolphin_spit noted in the trailer's megathread "i don’t like the idea of regenerating armor in this game have a feeling it’ll be reverted eventually." Brands Coalition unites regenerative CPGs to drive demand grow marketTo increase buyers’ demand for regenerative natural products two “regenerative evangelists” recently launched a trade association Editor's note: The ReGen Brands Coalition is not limited to brands that make regenerative-certified products it accepts products that follow regenerative agriculture practices and are verified by third parties Like many serial entrepreneurs and investors, Anthony Corsaro’s journey into becoming a regenerative agriculture evangelist—and a backer of brands that buy their products—began as a personal voyage “Once you feel the difference about what you put in your body and go to some of these regenerative farms see the difference of the ecology and functioning of a regenerative farm versus a conventional farm you just can't look away,” Corsaro says “Every single brand that is a member in the coalition has at least one SKU that they market with a third-party validated regenerative claim,” says Corsaro who also serves as co-founder and president of the ReGen Brands Coalition Related:Regenerative agriculture: Key takeaways for sustainable retailers With multiple certifications for regenerative agriculture Corsaro says no one was unifying all the different types of certifications within the natural foods CPG community We're trying to get you to understand that it's regenerative and what that means.” Regenerative Organic Certified and Land to Market Corsaro says the coalition won’t open to new members until 2025 “We're focused on figuring out what year one of this program looks like with this inaugural membership,” he says and Kyle Krull co-founded the ReGen Brands Coalition to unite CPG brands that make regenerative products with the goal of increasing consumer awareness and demand Corsaro’s journey into regenerative agriculture began long ago Corsaro was embedded in his family’s business His orphaned grandfather started selling produce in the early 1930s growing the large fresh produce distribution family company (officially founded in 1947) into a business serving more than 2,500 retailers in 20 states Related:A revolution is underway in regenerative ag infrastructure “I learned a lot and really enjoyed my time there,” says Corsaro who served as the director of marketing and sales at Indianapolis Fruit Company “But I left because I have an autoimmune disease.” Corsaro’s health journey with hidradenitis suppurativa a chronic skin condition that causes painful lesions led him to seek help via naturopathic medicine He also found solace in the ideology that food is medicine most effective when ingredients are grown in nutrient dense soil via regenerative agriculture “I became a personal champion and evangelist for the work,” says Corsaro who was working as the director of business development at Regenerative Food Systems Investment a news and events company that works with investors in regenerative agriculture Corsaro, also known as “AC,” connected with Kyle Krull the senior director of sales at Kettle & Fire the grass-fed bone broth company that uses regenerative agriculture for its products Related:Kiss the Ground launches new regenerative ag educational series Kyle had a very intense health journey—his with cancer—where he became very aware of the toxicity of our food and radical disconnection between food and health in our world today,” Corsaro says “We both saw this need for a CPG-specific conversation support and dialogue.” Three or four years ago capital was really focused upstream on farmers and farmland practices “We also saw this disconnect of bringing that fully through the supply chain creating demand and interfacing with consumers.” Corsaro was working as an active angel investor relationships and learnings helped us launch this [coalition] to try and solve some of these problems we’ve uncovered,” Corsaro says as a fractional executive director of ReGen Brands to give some direction Corsaro says they realized CPG brands involved in regenerative agriculture have three distinct financial and community sectors that required three separate brands unified under the ReGen banner “We initially chased that with ReGen Brands as a separate media company the ReGen Coalition as a 501(c)(6) trade association and Outlaw Ventures was the original brand that I had given to my investing work in this space,” Corsaro says “We worked very hard to launch those as sister but very disparate and disjointed entities “I had a dream where I got the initial download for the specific vision that we have now,” Corsaro says ReGen Brands launched ReGen Brands Coalition in August to focus on collaboration and activation of advancing regenerative agriculture through what is produced and consumed the ReGen Brands Institute was created as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization focused on research and education about brands working on products made with regenerative agriculture methods anyone that cares about creating more demand for [regenerative agriculture] for CPG can access all the content in the institute,” Corsaro says fund and connect regenerative brands with capital that aligns with their growth strategy and mission Corsaro says ReGen Brands Capital will focus on emerging brands “We want to work across non-dilutive capital both debt and equity investments and try and help these brands develop a holistic strategy,” he says. That will be accomplished by focusing on three complex problems: designing capitalization strategies for brands; finding money that plugs into those strategies; and accessing new patient investors using different financial products and models that are better aligned with regenerative outcomes Dawn Reiss is a Chicago-based journalist who has Player complaints center around its similarity to other titles with passive shield regen such as Halo and Fortnite Some of the community is also irritated that VALORANT is majorly disrupting the game's balance by implementing this update Professional FPS player @tenjiFPS quips "are we playing halo now or..." while another user @Loolo_WRLD writes "massive L this just doesn't fit valo." A few players are even calling for Riot to revoke their regen shield plan Only time will tell how regen shields will affect the game and if Riot Games will address the player base's concerns Both might be coming in the co-op horror game's first update REPO (or R.E.P.O Extract & Profit Operation) is one of the year's biggest sleeper hits and one of the biggest breakout co-op games since the similarly spooky Lethal Company the team at developer Semiwork have been working on its first ever update which is inching closer and closer "We have a pretty good grasp on the exploits and glitches the game currently offers on the live version and most of these things have already been fixed and they will be pushed out together with the first update," developer Pontus Sundstrom explains in the new Q&A the dev also talked about the possibility of adding a stamina regen upgrade "that would trigger when you crouch but this is still a work in progress idea," so the team's looking for thoughts from the community before properly implementing it Kaan freelances for various websites including Rock Paper Shotgun He particularly enjoys writing about spooky indies Also has an English Literature and Film Studies degree that he'll soon forget you will then be prompted to enter your display name LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — For more information, click here. News & Analysis on Food & Beverage Development & Technology 24-Mar-2025 Last updated on 24-Mar-2025 at 09:00 GMT Global food businesses and finance behemoths have joined forces under the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) banner to launch the Routes to Regen project, a demonstration of how regenerative farming can be more financially viable. It is hoped the big names, which also include Lloyds Banking Group, Natwest, Barclays, Aon, Tokio Marine Kiln, Lloyd’s and Waitrose & Partners, can utilise cross-sector collaboration to inspire farmers to adopt regen ag. Other companies will support farmers taking part in the project, including ADM, British Sugar, Burgess Farms and Cranswick. The project “exemplifies the power of cross-sector collaboration that the SMI is uniquely positioned to facilitate and aims to demonstrate a new model for how industries can unite to drive sustainable change on a global scale”, said SMI CEO Jennifer Jordan-Saifi. Carrying on throughout 2025, the project will be focused on the East of England. It aims to address the environmental challenges of the global food system, which is responsible for approximately 30% of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions and remains the biggest driver of nature loss. Economic risk and a poor support network is preventing farmers from transitioning to regenerative agriculture methods, despite the benefits of such operations being proven, according to the SMI. A menu of support will be provided and showcased through the project, including financial, technical and peer-to-peer support. By taking a whole farm approach, the programme aims to reduce risk for the farmer, increase adoption rates, and make regenerative agriculture a more viable and attractive choice for farmers. The project would “build on and unite existing initiatives, simplifying and making the transition a more viable and accessible choice for the farmer”, said McCain Foods’ VP for global external affairs and sustainability Charlie Angelakos. McDonalds’ chief sustainability and social impact officer Beth Hart, said: “Regenerative agriculture presents us with a critical opportunity to secure a long-term, sustainable future for farming.” Implementing regenerative practices required a “real and everlasting partnership across the supply chain to support and incentivise farmers” to adopt such practices, she added. 6:00 AM PT The exact release time will depend on the player's individual location and time zone New Regen Armor will shake up the VALORANT meta / Riot Games; @ValorLeaks twitterRegen Shields are the biggest shake-up Riot Games is introducing in Patch 9.10 The shields will be available as a seperate category in the pre-round Shop Sage and Phoenix have long been out-of-favor in their respective roles players have opted for stronger Sentinels like Killjoy and Cypher and Duelist mains usually choose Reyna or Jett Riot Games is implementing significant changes that will buff the two agents while Phoenix flashes will become a base ability and players will be able to cast his wall through barriers Minor Deadlock fixes also buff her Ultimate Cypher nerfs in Patch 9.10 will add a 0.5 second cooldown to his tripwire reveal / Riot Games Cypher and Omen are facing major nerfs in this patch which will lower their effectiveness in competitive play Omen nerfs will remove almost all one-ways and change his smoke functions while Cypher nerfs will target his tripwire effectiveness The Phantom will have higher long-range damage falloff rifles and submachine guns are being revamped in Patch 9.10 with higher inaccuracies overall The Ghost and the Classic are Riot Games' specific targets and will be nerfed The Phantom's accuracy is also being lowered combined with a slightly higher damage falloff at long range Patch 9.10 is also overhauling several VALORANT UI systems to clarify in-game events Overheal Shields and Smoke visual cues will all be clearer the patch will include higher Concuss penalties and some Premier Mode changes For a full list of VALORANT Patch 9.10 changes including smaller adjustments and bug fixes, check Riot Games' official Patch Notes here Patch 9.10 will largely change agent pick rates — Sage and Phoenix will be much more popular choices while Omen and Cypher will suffer in high-ranked competitive play Clove and Jett's nerfs are less severe so they will likely not be affected as much While the 9.10 Concuss changes will indirectly nerf Neon's entries very slightly they also make her strong on defense and will not lessen her reign over the current VALORANT ranked meta The Regen Shield introduction combined with higher weapon inaccuracy encourages players to carefully aim for headshots and coordinate utility with their teams It will be more important than ever to effectively get chip damage from grenades shock darts and mollies and take fights with numbers from multiple angles Breach will also become more useful on defense carefully timing his Concuss abilities to slow down movement duelists with the singer and pianist sounding confident All the more remarkable is that he was just beginning his journey as a songwriter with a distinct voice and vision “It just hit Jazz FM’s A List playlist in the U.K. speaking on an early autumn afternoon from his home in New York City Lost and Found that will arrive November 15 “These songs came from recording sessions I did two decades ago,” Regen explains until I found them a few months back on an ancient hard drive Regen found himself at something of a crossroads: He’d released acclaimed jazz recordings and landed a gig with the legendary vocalist Little Jimmy Scott who was experiencing something of a renaissance at the time But the gig was winding down and the young pianist realized that the music he was playing came largely from a different era A chance meeting with British singer-songwriter James Carrington outside a New York venue led to a string of pop gigs “I was simplifying my chords and simplifying the message I was communicating,” Regen notes He soon penned a series of songs that appeared on an EP titled Almost Home The collection wound up taking the budding singer-songwriter far from home came to the attention of Culture Club’s original manager Tony Gordon who was keen on finding Regen a record deal studio time was booked back in New York City with producer Bob Mann and an ace rhythm section they cut three originals and Regen’s reimagined version of Journey’s “Don't Stop Believin,’” prior to the song re-entering pop culture in The Sopranos and Glee “I had loved that song since I was 12 years old,” Regen recalls “buying Journey’s Escape on cassette at my local camera shop I always wondered what it would sound like as a piano feature The collection seemed like a good representation of Regen’s strengths but it became part of a familiar story: Artist records songs and enthusiasm begins to fade until the project’s all but forgotten People did hear and write about Regen’s rendition of “Don't Stop Believin’,” and “A Hundred Days” has remained a staple of his live shows across the decades “We still close my live show with that song,” he says That song and the EP itself also reflect the way that he used to make records Satisfied Mind and Higher Ground having been completed remotely the EP is evidence of musicians working together in a room which are me in a studio with a kick-ass band I was just getting it together as a singer and songwriter but it’s still a good snapshot of what I do The EP arrives at a time when Regen is taking a look back on his career There will be some past jazz recordings forthcoming soon as well but the look back is also in service of the future “We get so used to planning the next project that oftentimes we forget the past,” Regen says “Looking back helps me take a moment and say ReGen III Corp (OTCQB: ISRJF) has appointed Kirk McNamara as a consultant bringing over 15 years of The Manchester effort to escalate the mass production of human tissue and organs has been earmarked for $44 million from the federal government, officials announced Tuesday. Last fall, “ReGen Valley” — the marketing moniker for the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) — was named one of 12 Tech Hubs by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. The designation put the biofabrication project led by inventor Dean Kamen in line for a share of $504 million earmarked for the program. Tuesday’s announcement detailed how much each Tech Hub will receive. Deputy Commerce Secretary Don Graves traveled to Manchester on Tuesday to formally announce the news. “President Biden and Vice President Harris at the start of this administration have been focused on harnessing the American innovation that we see here in Manchester and spreading economic opportunity to every corner of the country,” Graves said to a group of ARMI executives, government officials and community partners gathered at 150 Dow Street, a building that is being retrofitted for biofabrication labs and production space. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen talks to a group gathered in a Millyard building Tuesday when federal officials announced $44 million in Tech Hubs funding for the ReGen Valley biofabrication effort in Manchester. The announcement marks the federal government’s ongoing investment in the project, which Kamen initiated in the Manchester Millyard in 2017. The effort now has more than 200 industry partners. In May, ARMI officials confirmed that the Department of Defense has committed $100 million over the next 10 years to the project. That funding is an extension of the original $80 million secured from the Department of Defense in 2017. Other major awards include $44 million from the Economic Development Administration as part of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge in 2022. The regional effort, which also includes Nashua, is estimated to create several thousand jobs in the years ahead, says organizers, who cite workforce development, the high cost of housing and a shortage of child care services among the greatest challenges the project faces. ARMI also faces competition from bigger cities and state with much greater resources, Kamen said during his remarks Tuesday. “I think it’s pretty clear that when you look at what’s going on all over this country and some of the biggest states with the biggest state and other federal budgets in health care — Texas, California, New York — what ARMI is doing now with 200 members is creating an explosion of opportunity here. But it’s put us under stress for child care, for housing, to create the workforce of the future we need,” Kamen said. Kamen acknowledged the support of New Hampshire’s congressional delegation in supporting legislation that has led to the federal funding ARMI has thus far secured. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen noted the vast potential of the work underway to improve health care for people fighting diseases, including her granddaughter, Elle, who suffers from type 1 diabetes. “We know that the chronic diseases, the challenges that people have with needing organ transplants and all of the innovation that happens here, is going to make such a huge difference in the lives of people, not only in New Hampshire but across the country,” Shaheen told the group. A group representing New Hampshire’s hospitals filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a state tax on hospitals — the latest turn in an ongoing dispute over hundreds of millions of dollars in health care funding. No one will feel the effects of the two-year budget passed by the New Hampshire House more, if it is enacted, than New Hampshire low-income residents who need help paying for, and accessing, health care. Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital President and CEO Susan Mooney plans to retire as soon as her replacement is found, though the process is expected to take months, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday, April 14. An individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement (ICHRA) represents a welcome change for many – particularly large employers who struggle to manage their claims year over year. Mental health is not a “nice to have” benefit — it’s essential. And in 2025, any health plan that doesn’t put behavioral health front and center is missing the mark. A federal judge says New Hampshire is making good progress toward eliminating wait times for inpatient mental health care. Nick Vailas, founder and CEO of Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center (BASC), knows that the future of healthcare is one where quality rises and costs go down. Buzz last week for this test I drove it in New York City and its suburbs for roughly 250 miles comparing efficiency in different conditions Buzz offers regenerative braking with two modes: a default "D" (Drive) mode for light coasting and a "B" mode for more aggressive braking the Volkswagen Group is skeptical of true one-pedal driving like many EV makers offer so B mode kind of replicates that experience—until you have to use the brake pedal to stop.)  I found that regen was more effective overall but it wasn’t always the best way to maximize range Buzz gets 86 kilowatt-hours of usable battery capacity The EPA-rated 231-mile range on the AWD trims gives it an efficiency of 2.7 miles per kilowatt-hours The impact of coasting on efficiency depends on several factors: topography It’s the most effective on flat terrain and gentle downhill slopes since the energy saved going down gets used while climbing back up The ID. Buzz, even though I love its design has the proportions of an average Manhattan apartment even though its surfaces are relatively smoother than other vans It has a curb weight of a whopping 6,197 pounds (2,811 kg) of which the battery alone accounts for 1,230 pounds the base Chrysler Pacifica is 1,700 pounds lighter it’s like a boulder barrelling down the hill It requires plenty of stopping power—it gets disc brakes upfront but drum brakes at the rear which is a shame for something that’s so heavy you have to twist the column-mounted gear selector from “D” to “B.” Even then not the aggressive one-pedal driving experience found in some EVs You’ll still need to use the brake pedal to come to a full stop regenerative braking never truly deactivates the vehicle coasted every time I lifted my foot off the throttle But pressing the brake pedal still activates recuperation most owners will likely drive it in Comfort mode All these variables influenced the efficiency numbers I calculated and the ones indicated by the vehicle’s computer On a bright sunny day with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) I observed a maximum efficiency of 3.2 miles per kilowatt-hour while coasting That’s around suburban New York City roads That number tanked when it started pouring and I got stuck in traffic while returning to the city Coasting is inefficient in stop-and-go traffic Buzz required minimal throttle inputs to keep going Over 103 miles of driving in mixed conditions of which 70% of the drive was in NYC suburbs and the rest in the city the calculated efficiency was 2.1 miles per kilowatt-hour while coasting The efficiency indicated by the on-board computer was 2.4 miles per kWh For reference, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 deliver well above 3.0 miles per kWh It’s also worth noting that this is based on the energy delivered by the 350 kW Electrify America stations so the energy accepted by the vehicle was likely slightly lesser and hence the efficiency marginally higher than calculated Over 90-odd miles of driving in the same mixed traffic conditions the calculated efficiency was 2.5 miles per kWh and the indicated efficiency was 3.0 miles per kWh I observed this number climb to 3.2 miles per kWh Buzz delivered while coasting on open roads the best way to squeeze the most range is to use a bit of both Instead of keeping your foot planted all the time you can let go if road conditions allow the vehicle to cruise smoothly using regenerative braking is the best way to maximize around-town efficiency remember that anticipation and defensive driving can help your efficiency don’t accelerate and then slam on the brakes when you get closer—that’s just a waste of electrons but smart driving habits benefit both your wallet and your vehicle in terms of maintenance and repairability it’s impractical to switch between coasting and regen every single time Unless you’re laser-focused on eking out every last mile of range from the battery leaving regen activated should suffice for the majority of drivers Have a tip? It has launched the programme in partnership with regenerative agriculture start-up Klim, which in November raised $22 million in Series A funding, Germany’s largest agtech Series A round of the year. Via its digital platform, farmers receive tools to plan, execute, and finance regenerative practices. Through it, farmers can restore soil health, improve farm resilience and biodiversity, capture carbon, and reduce farm emissions, the company says. Over 3,500 farmers are using the platform, cultivating over 700,000 hectares of land, representing 5% of German farmland, and its clients include Nestlé, the supermarket Kaufland, and bakery brand Aryzta. Klim will onboard German farmers and further develop the ADM programme by providing monitoring, reporting and verification services. Together, Klim and ADM have defined over 30 key performance indicators that farmers can use to measure impact using comprehensive data and insights from across the entire farm. The analysis aims to help farmers review essential performance metrics to make informed decisions on which regenerative methods are the best suited to their operations. ADM and its customers can then use the analysis to account for the results as part of their Scope 3 inventory. ADM’s programme in Germany follows a comprehensive design, explained Candy Siekmann, director of climate smart agriculture origination at ADM. “It gathers data from across entire farms and provides farmers with tools to better position their farm for the future and help reduce and sequester emissions. Very few companies touch every part of the value chain, from farmer to consumer, the way ADM does,” she claimed, “representing a unique opportunity to connect every step of that value chain”. Klim’s CEO and founder Robert Gerlach said that by combining ADM’s resources and farming network with its data and analytics driven approach and regenerative expertise, the pair aim to spearhead an industry-wide shift towards a more sustainable food system. “This partnership is a powerful model for how collaboration across the entire value chain can deliver both environmental impact and economic resilience at scale,” he said. Enrolled farmers can get training by Klim agronomists, he added. The partnership also aims to be a hybrid approach that incentivises both new and existing regenerative agriculture practices to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote soil health, and highlight the positive impact of sequestered carbon. This approach will appeal to a diverse range of farmers including those already implementing regenerative agriculture and those new to the practice, the companies said. ‘We can treble output’: Meet the Georgia start-up connecting farmers and agronomists worldwide27-Jan-2025By Oliver MorrisonTelagri is putting farmers in eastern Europe and central Asia in contact with top agricultural specialists in other parts of the world for online 1-2-1 consultations. News and Analysis on Global Agri-Tech Innovation, Investment and Regulation 09-Dec-2024 Last updated on 09-Dec-2024 at 12:14 GMT This was a key point raised in a panel discussion on “New approaches to regenerative agriculture for soil health and carbon sequestration”. The session took place during the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit held in Singapore from 19–21 Nov 2024. The panel consisted of Stephen Weise, managing director Asia at Alliance of Biodiversity International and CIAT; Nana Kuenkel, cluster director of Agriculture & Food at GIZ Thailand; Katrina Hayter, global head for Sustainable Land Use & Supply Chains at HSBC; Shailendra Mishra, global head of Sustainability: Grains, Oils, Wheat Milling & Feed, at Olam Agri; and Ira Noviarti, EVP at Unilever. It was moderated by Perpetua George, managing director, Sustainability & Biodiversity, Asia Pacific, at PWC. There are five key characteristics essential to regenerative agriculture, according to Weise. One of them includes focusing on outcomes rather than rigidly adhering to specific practices. “I’d start with the principle of being outcome focused. We need to avoid the trap of being dogmatic about specific practices. Instead, it’s about identifying the outcomes we want to achieve, which can vary depending on the situation, and then determining the necessary practices to reach those outcomes,” said Weise. The key outcomes include improving soil health, ensuring water conservation and biodiversity, greenhouse gas mitigation, increased productivity, and improved farmer incomes and livelihoods. Secondly, regenerative agriculture is inherently flexible, and maintaining that flexibility is critical. It must also be scientifically sound, relying on practices rooted in evidence that is relevant to the specific context, not just aspirational ideals, said Weise. This flexibility stems from its adaptability to different geographic regions, types of crops, and farming conditions, which allows it to be applied in diverse ways depending on the local needs and available resources. Therefore, regenerative agriculture is a journey involving producers and value chain actors – the third feature. The process is often knowledge-intensive, requiring ongoing learning, adaptation, and support. Change tends to be incremental rather than a one-time transformation. Success hinges on collaboration among farmers, supply chain partners, and researchers – no single group can carry the burden alone. Fourthly, to achieve these outcomes, clear targets and indicators should be established with “simple, pragmatic monitoring systems” that focus on the essentials instead of measuring anything and everything. Lastly, there must be incentive for change at various levels. These incentives need to be present for producers, within the value chain, or at a national level, depending on the desired outcomes, according to Weise. To illustrate how these principles play out in reality, Kuenkel highlighted one example of scaling regenerative agriculture in Thailand. The discussion covered the challenges of scaling regenerative agriculture, particularly in developing regions. Kuenkel mentioned the Thai Rice Project, a $120 million initiative that integrates public, private, and international climate finance to support 250,000 farmers across Thailand’s major rice-growing regions. This partnership model underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in scaling regenerative agriculture and achieving broader sustainability goals. It is a project that combines funding from private companies like Olam Agri, PepsiCo, and Mars with domestic financing from the Thai government and the Green Climate Fund. Kuenkel highlighted Thailand’s commitment to ambitious climate targets under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) as a key driver for large-scale initiatives. By integrating carbon markets into its strategy, the Thai government creates financial incentives for sustainable practices and aligns activities across sectors. “The Thai government puts in both resources and its extension system, leveraging carbon markets as an exit strategy while aligning all sector activities,” Kuenkel said. Despite the potential benefits of regenerative agriculture, financing remains a significant issue. For one, agriculture receives a disproportionately small share of global climate finance. “Only 2.4% of global climate finance is directed toward agriculture, compared to 50% for renewable energy and 20% for transportation. That’s kind of astounding when you consider what a low-cost source of climate action this sector is,” said Hayter. Hayter highlighted the fragmented nature of agricultural supply chains as a key barrier to channelling funds to smallholder farmers. “Where we have strong vertical integration, it’s much easier to get finance to flow to the farmer. But where there’s no direct relationship between food brands and farmers, it’s quite hard,” Hayter explained. She also shared examples of solutions, such as HSBC’s $50 million credit facility for smallholder farmers in India, which provides small loans of around $1,000 each to help farmers transition to climate-smart agriculture, which help improve their livelihoods. On a related note, there should be a tailored approach to regenerative agriculture, according to Mishra. Mishra warned against a one-size-fits-all model: “We have to understand that regenerative agriculture is a framework that varies across different geographies and commodities. There should be collaboration with academic institutions to ensure initiatives are underpinned by science.” This collaborative, science-backed approach ensures that regenerative practices are context-specific, effective, and adaptable to various regions. Noviarti agreed, saying that regenerative agriculture is not just a set of practices, but a business opportunity. “It’s a source of value creation for businesses – good for the planet and good for the bottom line,” Noviarti said, explaining that this aligns regenerative practices with corporate goals, enabling businesses to meet environmental targets while benefiting economically. Hayter mentioned a key challenge in scaling up regenerative agriculture. The temporary reduction in crop yields, referred to as “yield drag,” often occurs during the transition to more sustainable practices. This dip in productivity can discourage farmers from adopting regenerative methods, especially if they lack assurance that their buyers or other stakeholders in the value chain will provide support during this period. “For farmers to make an investment into regenerative agriculture without knowing their buyer will go on the journey with them – it’s hard for them to commit,” she said. This ensures all value chain actors, from producers to consumers, share a long-term commitment to sustainability. Kuenkel also highlighted the importance of inclusivity in regenerative initiatives, stressing that solutions must be equitable and consider regional, gender, and socioeconomic differences – this will ensure no one is left behind in the transition.
