GERMANY: Heating company Vaillant has commenced production at a new electronic components factory in Remscheid to support the demand for heat pumps
The new 12,000m2 electronics factory was built in less than two years and is located in the immediate vicinity of the company headquarters
the research and development centre and the Vaillant Group’s main plant in Remscheid
Vaillant says that the investment was prompted by the increasing demand for electronic components in connection with the expansion of the “strategically important” heat pump business
With an initial production capacity of around 5,000,000 components to supply group locations worldwide
the new facility will enable Vaillant to respond flexibly to increases in demand in the market at any time
A photovoltaic system for generating electricity and a heat pump system for heating and cooling ensure that the building is operated almost entirely with renewable energy
around 150 skilled workers will be working in production
“The expansion of electronics production is part of our long-term corporate strategy
Our goal is to become a global market leader in gas heating systems and also to take a leading position in the European heat pump market,” commented Vaillant Group CEO Dr-Ing Norbert Schiedeck.

skipWhenExists: false });I recently visited Lennep
for the symposium of the International Society for the History of Radiology (ISHRAD)
which was held at the Deutsches Röntgen Museum (DRM)
not the least when we were exploring the cafés
Remscheid-Lennep is the birthplace of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen
and the museum should be visited at least once by anyone at all interested in x-rays and radiology
the DRM has been transformed by its dynamic director Uwe Busch
share a deep passion for radiology's history
The DRM has changed from being a more traditional museum and now has something to appeal to everyone
Röntgen and radiology are presented in an exciting and innovative manner
The nearest airport is at Düsseldorf and Remscheid-Lennep is only a short journey away by train
The museum dates back more than 75 years and gives a comprehensive account of the life
and it also shows the applications of x-rays in many areas
Röntgen won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901
The Röntgen Museum has been extended and modernized over recent years
A huge amount of work was done recently on the archives
and the museum staff must be congratulated
There is a wonderful collection of material to study
and a particularly impressive online archive plus many images can be downloaded
I found their work on Röntgen's own holiday photographs particularly interesting
Extensive research using innovative modern methods helped to determine the exact locations where Röntgen took the photographs
The promotion of the radiological sciences for all ages is central to the work of the museum
There are age-appropriate and fascinating guided tours through the main exhibition
The teachings are appropriate for all school classes from primary school to secondary school
but they are also of interest to those of playschool or preschool age
The DRM's X-PERIMENTE van is used for school visits
On the top floor, there is a modern laboratory for the use of students of all ages. In the children's Röntgen laboratory, the pupils can attend two to three-hour periods of various workshops in the RöLab
and there are events that offer pupils the possibility of carrying out experiments and also setting themselves interactive learning tasks
This enables their young guests to have a taste of laboratory life and to perhaps go home with a new inspiration for a possible career
There is also a well-equipped "X-PERIMENTE" van so that a team from the museum can take experiments to local schools
The house where Röntgen was born can be visited and is close to the museum. It has its own website
The house is cladded with slates and has the typical green shutters
It was acquired by the German Roentgen Society eV / Deutsche Rontgengesellschaft e.V
(DRG) and they have made the house into a brilliant resource
When I first visited the house the ground floor was occupied with books
and I was able to sleep in the bedroom on the top floor
At that time the house resembled a traditional townhouse of the area
The house where Röntgen was born is typical of Bergisch housing of around 1800
It was listed as a historic monument and entered in the Remscheid city monument list in 1982
The house has now been completely modernized inside
and the ground floor houses a public exhibition area where much interesting material about Röntgen and his family is displayed
there are meeting and conference rooms with desks and computers for study
Röntgen was always said to keep chocolate on his desk
and I was pleased that this tradition seems to be maintained
there is an apartment for guest and research fellows
The house a now a point of reference for both professional scientists and the general public to study and research Rontgen and his rays
Are you a runner? The Röntgenlauf is a multiterrain running event held annually on the last Sunday of October in Lennep
The 63.3 km ultramarathon takes the runners along the Röntgenweg
which is a hiking trail in the hills of the Bergisches Land around the city of Remscheid
The start and the finish lines for the runs are at the Sportzentrum Hackenberg in Lennep in the eastern part of Remscheid
The longest route is very challenging (+1,370 meters of ascent) and varied and scenic
and it offers many fine views of the region's rich industrial heritage
including the graceful Müngstener Brücke (Müngsten Bridge)
The International Society for the History of Radiology (ISHRAD) is a vibrant society dedicated to the history of radiology and radiological technology and practice
many interesting papers on the history and prehistory of radiology were presented
The next ISHRAD symposium will be held during the French national congress
which will be organized by the Société Française de Radiologie (SFR) in Paris from 4 to 7 October 2024
The ISHRAD symposium will be on Saturday 5 Oct 2024
We hope to contribute to a booklet that will be produced by the French Radiology Museum on early radiology pioneers from around the world
Please do consider joining ISHRAD, and possibly coming to our symposium in Paris. For more details, go to the ISHRAD website

CBIA IS FIGHTING TO MAKE CONNECTICUT A TOP STATE FOR BUSINESS
A BETTER BUSINESS CLIMATE MEANS A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR EVERYONE

One of CBIA’s members is a large designer and manufacturer of fuel cell technology and fuel cell systems
This manufacturer approached CBIA to strategically supply natural gas for a 14.9MW power generation facility in Connecticut
The client had an existing power purchase agreement with a major utility for electricity
The contract pricing for the power generated was predicated on the utility default price
The client was interested in learning if they could get a better value and wanted CBIA to analyze their current contract pricing and structure
developed a model to compare a forecast of predicted utility rates in Southern Connecticut versus the overall natural gas market
We then issued a competitive request for proposal (RFP) to our vast base of suppliers
the CBIA team evaluated various product types
CBIA analyzed and presented different supplier responses to the client while explaining the contractual nuances of each supplier
and by identifying the right time to go to market
CBIA delivered approximately $767,000 in savings over a 14-month period to the client
The consumption of 825,000 Dth per year should result in a 15% savings for the client compared to their previous contract with the utility
In addition to the savings generated through the RFP process
the client was able to regain a significant portion of their $600,000 letter of credit when they left the utility

one of the world’s largest bakery franchises
opened its first United States location in Southwest Connecticut
with plans for expansion via franchising throughout the country
the company was not aware of the deregulated nature of some energy markets
By providing an overview of the deregulated market structure
CBIA Energy Connections helped to educate the client on alternatives which considered the best and most cost effective option for each franchise
the standard offer rate from the utility was amongst the highest on record
By monitoring the marketplace and soliciting bids from the majority of competitive suppliers and contrasting with the utility standard offer
CBIA Energy Connections was able to provide custom solutions for each franchise location which offered long term savings and a common end date for future aggregations
In providing fixed price contracts for all the franchises
the client has been able to save in excess of $50,000 for all locations
enabling budget certainty in a volatile energy marketplace
the common end date will enable the member to participate in future CBIA Energy Connections group aggregations for additional savings

Because CBIA is the premier business association in Connecticut
most of our members have their primary operations here
CBIA member companies that are headquartered elsewhere can also rely on CBIA Energy Connections as a trusted partner in energy to help manage procurement for their portfolio of operations
as we are licensed to operate in all the deregulated states
An aerospace manufacturer who is headquartered out-of-state in a non-deregulated energy market
recently acquired four independent companies in Connecticut
Managing the nuances of energy procurement for these four new divisions
along with nearly a dozen other locations across North America
made for quite an arduous task for the company
Some of the Connecticut locations were finishing contracts at different times of year
and others were on the standard offer from the utility
the company needed help with a cohesive strategy to both save money and obtain budget certainty
CBIA Energy Connections worked with the member to develop a strategy that incorporated bundling all four Connecticut locations under one contract
CBIA Account Manager “Through this new contract
which contained staggered start dates per location per their legacy contracts
we were able to provide a new supply rate which was considerably lower than the utility standard offer
by aggregating all the usage across the locations
the company was able to get a far lower rate than if each location were entered into a supply contract on its own.”
In the first 12 months of this new multi-location contract alone
CBIA Energy Connections was able to save this member over $350,000.00 on electricity supply costs
at a time when utility rates were at their highest on record
In addition to helping manage the supply rate
Energy Connections also identified that two of the four locations were paying sales tax on their electricity supply and delivery
By facilitating the submission of a tax-exemption form
the member was able to save an additional $20,000.00/year
as well as recover $8,000.00 in back taxes as an on-bill credit
in managing energy procurement across all Connecticut locations while providing industry expertise and periodic market updates used for budgetary planning
CBIA Energy Connections was able to free up significant time and effort for the member that would have been spent attempting to coordinate from 2,000 miles away
as headquarters had been doing up until then

A franchisee of one of New England’s largest breakfast chains came to CBIA Energy Connections with plans for rapid expansion in Connecticut
This CBIA member company was seeking to lock in a fixed price contract for long-term budget certainty in the midst of a rapidly escalating marketplace
but the company’s growth plans called for the acquisition of several new stores over a two-year period
While many of the client’s existing electricity accounts bought electricity supply from local utilities
several of the new locations that the company was in process of acquiring were already under third-party agreements with multiple suppliers and various contract end dates
Together with the member company’s chief financial officer
CBIA Energy Connections put together a schedule to be incorporated into a competitive supply request for proposal (RFP) containing multiple start dates for the 32 current and planned accounts
The RFP also called for additional flexibility via a provision to accommodate for unforeseen changes including the addition of new locations not yet identified
supporting the company’s longer-term growth vision
This RFP was put out to six competitive suppliers and based on the results
the member selected the longest term available with a supplier who had both the lowest price and most flexible contract to accommodate the member’s expansion plans
the client was able to add ten new stores and eliminate two accounts which were closed
all while maintaining the same fixed contract supply rate and avoiding any early termination penalties
This was done at a time when both the competitive marketplace and local utilities saw an unprecedented rise in costs based upon the explosion of natural gas prices
this customer was able to realize a savings of over $200,000 vs

The State of Connecticut exempts manufacturers from taxes on the sale of gas
electricity and heating fuel used directly in the fabrication or manufacturing of a product to be sold
This tax exemption can save manufacturers 6.35% on both their demand and supply purchases
yet it must be initiated with both the utility and supplier
this line item is removed from the electricity or gas invoice and the company is credited
manufacturers with SIC codes between 2000-3999 are eligible for a gross earnings tax credit of 8.5% for electricity
appears on utility bills as “manufacturer gross earnings tax credit.”
the organization’s consultative electricity and natural gas procurement program
regularly performs audits of members’ invoices to ensure that all relevant tax exemptions are applied
“Our consultants routinely discover situations where manufacturers are not receiving proper sales and/or gross earnings tax credits
a very large manufacturer in Southern Connecticut was not receiving the gross receipts tax credit from their utility on their two largest electricity accounts.”
providing the necessary tax forms while requesting a retroactive refund on our member’s behalf to be paid for the maximum lookback period
This led to an investigation by the utility as to why the member was not receiving the credit
CBIA worked in conjunction with the utility’s senior management
it was determined that the member was in fact eligible for two years’ worth of gross earnings tax credits totaling over $136,000
which were ultimately paid over the next two billing cycles
we discovered that a mid-sized manufacturer who decided to take advantage of CBIA Energy Connections was paying sales tax to both the utility and their third-party supplier for their two electricity accounts
We questioned this and brought it to the attention of the member
who was unaware of the manufacturers’ sales tax exemption for energy
We then advised the member to complete the appropriate exemption form for each account
which were then submitted to both the utility and the supplier.” In this situation
the member received $65,000 in sales tax credits

India has also established a strong position in the field of manmade fiber production in recent decades
The West Asian country has now become the second largest polyester yarn manufacturer in the world
The Indian textile industry covers the entire value chain from the melt to the finished textile end product
The technical textiles sector in particular is regarded as a future market
With an average growth rate of 12 percent since 2013
this dynamic sector accounts for around 13 percent of the entire Indian textile and clothing market
according to the government organization Invest India
The market volume has almost doubled in the past ten years
the production of industrial yarn has so far relied heavily on polyamide
Oerlikon Barmag has a strong market position here
we have commissioned plants for numerous customers,” said Dr
head of Sales of the Oerlikon Business Unit Manmade Fibers Solutions
Increasing demand for industrial polyester yarns
The construction boom and the increasing use of geotextiles and industrial textiles in various infrastructure projects as well as in agriculture and aquaculture show enormous growth potential
This is supported by the government’s 2021 industrial development program
which includes technical textiles as one of ten priority sectors
The program is based on reducing dependence on imports
a large proportion of the technical textiles and yarns required in the country have been imported
The trend towards high-quality technical textiles for the domestic market has also been noted by the Remscheid-based machine and plant manufacturer
“We are receiving more and more inquiries from Indian customers for spinning systems for industrial yarns,” Dr
“What is new is the great interest shown by companies from downstream processes that are looking for backward integration
We attribute this to the stricter regulations of the Bureau of Indian Standards
industrial yarns were mainly imported from China
In order to guarantee the quality of the processed yarns
this has been strictly regulated by the government since last year
It therefore makes sense for Indian textile producers to enter the yarn manufacturing sector.” This development was also noticeable at this year’s Techtextil in Frankfurt
where the experts from Oerlikon Barmag were able to hold a disproportionately high number of technical discussions with Indian customers and interested parties
Oerlikon Barmag’s industrial yarn technology offers an extensive process window – without compromising on yarn quality
The flexible spinning concepts enable a variety of possible yarn products for numerous applications
The portfolio includes processes for the production of polyamide and polyester yarns with the required physical properties for a wide range of end applications
safety belts or even airbags — yarn producers will find a tailor-made concept for every end application at the Remscheid-based solution provider

Jorney to becoming the preferred technological partner for the manmade fibre industries in China
Clothing/Footwear, Sustainable
was one of the world’s first companies to construct machines for the large-scale production of synthetic staple fibres
The manufacturer of manmade fibre spinning systems and texturing machines based in in Remscheid
Germany – part of the Swiss Oerlikon Group since 2007 – has shaped technological progress in the sector with ever more innovation focusing on sustainability and digitalization
Barmer Maschinenfabrik Aktiengesellschaft (Barmag) wass founded in Barmen
The German and Dutch founders were entering unchartered technological territory created as the result of a groundbreaking invention – in 1884
French chemist Count Hilaire Bernigaud de Chardonnet had used nitrocellulose to produce the first so-called artificial silk
The following decades saw rapid development focusing on the search for synthetic textile fibres and their manufacturing technologies
Barmag battled its way through the eventful early years of the manmade fibre industry and suffered extensive destruction of its factories at the end of World War Two
Rebuilding was successful and with the unstoppable success story of purely synthetic plastic fibres such as polyamide
the company flourished from the 1950s through to the 1970s
establishing sites in all international industrial regions and garnering prestige across the globe in the process
Barmag reached the pinnacle of the market and became the preferred technological development partner for the manmade fibre industries in China
Oerlikon Barmag is a leading supplier of manmade fibre filament spinning systems and part of the Manmade Fibres Solutions business unit of the Oerlikon Polymer Processing Solutions Division
this has been marked by innovations such as the Wings generation of winders for POY in 2007 and Wings for FDY (fully drawn yarns) in 2012
the focus of further developments is very much on digitalization and sustainability
As one of the world’s first systems manufacturers
Oerlikon Barmag has been implementing fully-networked smart factories for globally-leading polyester manufacturers since the end of the last decade
digital solutions and automation are also helping to provide greater climate and environmental compatibility
This sustainability commitment is not only evidenced by the e-save label introduced for all products back in 2004 – Oerlikon is endeavoring to also make all its sites carbon-neutral by 2030 and to acquire its energy exclusively from renewable sources
“Innovation begins with creativity and remembering the past provides plenty of motivation and inspiration for the future,” says Georg Stausberg

His creative drive is fuelled by his willingness to rigorously question the possibilities of visual perception
to look at the interplay between human cognition and photographic representation by asking: "What do I see and what do I want to see
What is in the picture?” It is a reflection of his enduring delight in embracing doubt
a defining moment of his compassionate view of the world
wide-ranging insight into the artist’s themes and shows the interaction between Tillmans’ various groups of works and working methods
His characteristic style of hanging his works
in which he brings different moments in time and different geographies together in different formats
enables his visual narratives to develop in a unique way
forms a network of the large and the small that metaphorically turns the exhibition into the “Weltraum”
the “space of the world” and the “outer space” suggested in the title of the exhibition
Wolfgang Tillmans is constantly on the move
driven by his curiosity about current debates: most recently
he followed the intangible traces of new technologies from San Francisco
the resulting works are interwoven with older pieces
creating completely new perspectives – for example
between the utopias of electronic music of the 1990s
and the now bewildering tangle of electronic developments or the debates in the last ten years about freedom of travel and drawing borders
music has played a central role in Tillmans’ work: alongside photographic works
the exhibition also presents Tillmans’ latest sound-video work
which brings together the songs from his current album
The music videos combine the central elements of his work: creating images
exploring electronic music and reflecting on his own presence
Tillmans uses the fragility and weightlessness of his music as a medium to convey messages of humanity and openness
As a special added dimension of his exhibition at the Albertinum
Wolfgang Tillmans has created an extensive artist’s book that brings his work into a dialogue full of associations with the history of the Dresden collections
Dinge zählen” is published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König and includes a conversation with the artist conducted by curators Hilke Wagner and Dennis Brzek
The artist’s book will be presented in the exhibition together with its two references – Tillmans’ exhibition catalogue for Tate Britain from 2003 and the inventory catalogue of the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister in Dresden from 1987
Thanks to the support of the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst in Dresden e.V.
the “Spätschicht: GMKD Evening at the Albertinum” will take place every Thursday evening with extended opening hours until 8 p.m

Sustainable
Sustainable handling of natural resources is a global task
something that needs to be addressed now and not just in the future
says Germany’s BB Engineering GmbH (BBE)
This relates in particular to the further development of the circular economy for post-consumer or post-production waste
the recyclability of PET products made by the manmade fibre industry is attributed special significance
Modern resource-friendly packaging would not be conceivable without manmade PET fibres and commodities generally made from chemicals
such as beverage bottles and cleaning materials
it is essential that polyester is also recycled
the recycling of polyester materials and the possibilities for converting the waste into new high-end products within the polyester filaments
fibres and nonwovens market are state-of-the-art
consumers in the markets are demanding sustainable products and the careful utilization of resources – increasingly in the textile sector as well
sports apparel and furniture manufacturers and the automobile industry
for car seats and interior cladding components
are increasingly focusing on sustainable products and products made from recycled materials
they are already telling suppliers of filaments
fibres and nonwovens that they will be switching from exclusively virgin polyester to recycled polyester – in some cases up to 100 percent – for the manufacture of their textile products in the near future
Consumers’ social awareness has been the trigger for this development
The original idea – namely to manufacture sub-premium goods using recycled polyester raw material
for use in insulating materials – is short-sighted from today’s perspective
Recycled polyester has long been prevalent within the high-end textile segment
and says that viewing polyester as a valuable resource rather than as waste is an important and proper development
Manmade fibres and filaments made from recycled bottle flake material require corresponding single-variety collection or pre-sorting of the bottle material being recycled and comprehensive cleaning before they are shredded into polyester flakes
It is then possible to spin these flakes directly into POY filaments (DTY in the downstream process)
that the products achieve a quality standard that corresponds to virgin material in many applications
there are also many cases in which the material quality and/or property achieved does not comply with the market requirements
parameters such as viscosity and homogeneity are crucial and must be subject to virtually no fluctuations
to enable recycled polyester to be used here in the first place necessitates its pre- treatment
And this is carried out by the VacuFil recycling process
The VacuFil enables the manufacture of extremely homogeneous
viscosity-stable rPET melt and hence a precisely definable and reproducible raw material for downstream processes (i.e
As a manufacturer of components and systems for producing manmade fibres
BB Engineering (BBE) is familiar with the dire impact that even the smallest viscosity deviation has on the spinning plant process
in aligning the melt with the process in a targeted manner
Macro- and microscopic melt homogeneity is achieved by means of homogenization drying
gentle filtration and controlled vacuum degassing
the melt can either be first granulated or fed directly into the end product’s manufacturing process
can even be used for more challenging downstream processes
including the manufacture of FDY filaments
Here the material is subjected to extreme loads throughout the entire manufacturing process
the filaments are drawn and taken up at speeds of up to 4,500 m/min
BBE is headquartered in Remscheid/Germany and is a joint venture between Brückner Group GmbH
the world market leader for machines for the polyester foil industry and headquartered in Siegsdorf/Germany
the world market leader for systems for the manmade fibre industry and headquartered in Remscheid/Germany
BBE is a pioneer in the development of processes for using recycled materials
fibres and nonwovens for manmade fibre industry consumers
“Our decades of competence kicked in while we were developing the VacuFil
What Oerlikon Barmag brings to the table as a technological leader in the field of filament yarn spinning systems
BBE complements with considerable know- how in the area of extrusion and filtration and in systems construction and engineering,” states Dr
BBE is the exclusive supplier of extrusion filter technology for various manmade fibre industry polymers
and particularly polyester for its parent companies
As a result of its association with the Brückner and Oerlikon Textile groups
BBE is always aware of the requirements of the further-processing industry in terms of granulate and melt made from recycled polyester
for this reason that the further development of post-consumer PET material and post-production PET material is of special interest to BBE’s parent companies and the reason for them bundling their recycling know-how to form the BB Engineering joint venture
BBE is located at the same site in Remscheid as Oerlikon Barmag
When it comes to the downstream processes with the VarioFil spinning system – the basis for spinning high-end manmade POY and FDY fibre filaments for textile and industrial applications that has been tried-and-tested for decades now – BBE is already an established manufacturer of compact and flexible systems for the manmade fibre industry
VarioFil R spinning systems have been used for converting PET regranulates and – directly – PET flakes into POY/DTY for both textile and carpet applications
And spin-dyed products made from PET recycled granulates are also being produced using VarioFil systems
construction and assembly of VacuFil and VarioFil units are carried out exclusively in Remscheid
very much in line with the company’s tried-and-tested ‘Made in Germany’ machine construction philosophy
VacuFil premiered at ITMA 2019 in Barcelona
garnering considerable attention at the trade fair
numerous tests have been conducted on the pilot system at the Remscheid site using authentic waste material supplied by various customers
The polyester recycled using the VacuFil has been successfully spun into POY and FDY
Various target viscosities and starting materials are not a problem for the VacuFil thanks to the innovative key component
The VacuFil unites gentle large-scale filtration and swift intrinsic viscosity build-up for consistently outstanding melt quality
which is automatically regulated between 1 and 30 mbar
ensures a controlled IV increase and additionally achieves an ideal melt homogeneity
which is vital for the downstream spinning performance
Comprising an inline viscosity measuring unit connected to the vacuum system
the IV can be continuously and reliably adjusted
producers are able to generate the specific kind of recycled polyester they require for their application
The excellent degasification performance additionally relieves energy-intensive pre-drying
With their modular structure and a performance spectrum of between 300 kg/h and maximum 3,000 kg/h
VacuFil systems open up various possibilities for processing polyester waste
agglomerated spinning waste or a mixture of both can be processed into high-quality PET granulate or fed directly into downstream processes (i.e
The entire recycling process is controlled and monitored by Oerlikon Barmag’s GUIDE system
the market-proven mixing technology manufactured by BBE
producers can not only add additives to the melt
they can also easily change rPET ratios in the main melt from between 5 and 50 percent stream in order to comply with legal standards
Customer requirements can be optimally catered for with various system configurations
“The close collaboration between the future operators of the system and our experts ensures that projects are successful
Tests carried out using authentic raw material supplied by customers in our small-scale production system guarantee a sophisticated process that complies with the mentioned requirements
customers always have a close eye on the broad operating window and the optimum operating point
our software supplies useful process optimization information
This saves costs and increases productivity,” explains Matthias Schmitz

the Remscheid-based systems manufacturer Oerlikon Barmag secured an above-average number of industrial yarns projects and the general trend was once again confirmed within the context of the ITMA Asia + CITME in October 2016
“This shows the sustainable success of the comprehensive range of innovative process solutions offered for the entire industrial yarns product program
Oerlikon Barmag is positioning itself as a leading partner and a solutions provider of efficient ‘from-melt-to-yarn’ production processes,” Oerlikon Barmag said in a statement
The new systems that will be commissioned over this year are primarily focused on the Asian region; however
manufacturing industrial yarns is also interesting for producers in Europe due to the comparably high margins and specialized areas of application
“We are experiencing huge demand for industrial yarn systems
Customers are asking for products that offer an interesting margin
Regional Sales Director at Oerlikon Barmag
been very well received by our customers is that our current machine concepts for industrial fine-titer nylon yarns allow us to offer configurations that are specifically tailored to the product requirements of the end application of these yarns
the focus of the machine design is both on the product quality of the yarns in typical titer ranges of between 20 and 70 den and on production efficiency and
on the optimization of the conversion costs.”
“The vast majority of the additional output of polyester and polyamide yarns will be deployed in the automotive sector (airbags
A further application area focuses on the broad spectrum of geotextiles and products for textile construction
And the continuing trend towards polyester yarns as a substitute for polyamide – prevalent among many product categories such as airbags
for example – is being confirmed by our projects.”
This is above all due to the constantly improving properties of polyester with simultaneously considerably lower raw material costs
the market for industrial yarns continues to diversify and develop very much in line with the specific end applications
the rising demand for so-called high-performance tyres is resulting in both increased demand for PET HMLS yarns and in the greater output of PA66 yarns for use in cap ply
Oerlikon Barmag offers flexible and product quality-oriented machine concepts that efficiently cover these requirements with excellent conversion costs for all product categories
systems for manufacturing yarns for PET and PA airbags
tyres and safety belts are successfully operating in the automotive sector
while there are also systems being used for textile applications such as upholstery and carpets
the yarn production for all automotive sector applications can be covered by Oerlikon Barmag solutions

Drivers on the German A1 have trouble finding a place where they could spend a break
In the absence of alternatives they stop on the road in Remscheid town to great dissatisfaction of its residents
In June the website for the German town of Remscheid (rga.de) published an article entitled “Truck Drivers in need cause anger (of the town residents – ed.)”
one of the roads in Remscheid Lennep – Tenter Weg – is used as a stopover by drivers who cannot find parking spaces by A1 in this region
On the overfilled Remscheid parking lot the trucks are even occupying the parking spaces for passenger cars
Drivers recommend the Tenter Weg road to each other
there are no sanitary facilities and the conditions are not suitable for drivers but it is the only alternative for those whose tachograph has indicated a break in this area
The inhabitants of Remscheid are open about their indignation – the bushes by Tenter Weg have become a toilet and a rubbish tip
it does not look like this problem will be resolved quickly
While there is already a search for a new parking lot
it will be years before it is built – says rga.de
Tenter Weg is one of many places in Germany in which truck drivers should not park but they are forced to do so due to the situation by the roads
In March this year we informed you about heavy goods vehicles which park on the parking lot by one of the shops
Germany is a transit country for transportation companies from all over Europe
Toll statistics show that there are more and more heavy goods vehicles on German roads every year
the bigger the problem with finding a parking space is
According to the head of the Federal Transport and Logistics Association
Karlheinz Schmidt who made the assessment last year
Germany is missing approximately 10,000 parking spaces for heavy goods vehicles
According to the government plans their number will increase by 6000 by the end of 2017
“We need 10,000 more parking spaces by highways to meet the needs of the current traffic
We estimate that in the next 15 years we will need another 10,000 spaces so we have to build 20,000 of them.”

"If you look back over the last twelve months
there are both positive and negative facets," said Police President Markus Röhrl as he opened the presentation of the 2023 crime statistics
anticipating that there were very different trends depending on the area of crime
He began by giving an overview of crime trends in the Bergisch city-triangle
before Guido Liedke (Head of the Crime Directorate at Wuppertal Police Headquarters since 01.09.2024 Head of the Crime Directorate at Wuppertal Police Headquarters) focused on the developments in certain phenomenon areas and explained them in more detail with figures
Positive: Crime rate in the city triangle is below the NRW average
The year 2023 is the first year after the coronavirus pandemic that was completely free of restrictions
While the crime curve declined in the coronavirus years
the total number of crimes in the presidential area rose by 1.7% compared to 2022
which is only half the increase for NRW as a whole (3.4%)
While the cities of Wuppertal and Solingen were responsible for the increase
the number of crimes in Remscheid actually decreased
600 more suspects were identified than in 2022
The crime clearance rate has also risen: to just under 56%
Remscheid and Solingen are below the NRW average
It is therefore clear that the Bergisch city-triangle - as in previous years - is one of the safest cities and regions in North Rhine-Westphalia
there is also shadow," said Head of Department Röhrl
"Violent crime has increased and we have reached record levels in a 10-year comparison." This trend towards more violence also corresponds with the number of offences in which knives were used
The high proportion of suspects under the age of 21 is also striking
This is 23.1% and is therefore clearly disproportionate to the proportion of this age group in the population
The very high proportion of young non-Germans committing violent crimes is also striking
Röhrl mentioned two stabbings on Maundy Thursday at Karlsplatz and in the City-Arkaden in Wuppertal
in which the victims suffered very serious injuries in some cases
At 39.2% of all suspects from all offense areas in the cities of Wuppertal
but their share of the total population is only 21.4%
Among the suspects are also many multiple and intensive offenders
These are offenders who commit five or more crimes in one year
The Wuppertal police will stick to existing concepts in the Bergisch region: with patrols
The proportion of suspects under the age of 21 is comparatively high
Chief Criminal Director Guido Liedke explained that the proportion of children
young people and adolescents was overrepresented in the structure of suspects at 23.1%
He referred to the "Kurve kriegen" project
which helps to curb or prevent criminal careers among children or young people
which has an impact on citizens' so-called subjective sense of security
fell by 1.8% in 2023 and is still below the level of the years before the coronavirus pandemic
very positive development and the EK focus plays a major role in this," emphasized Liedke
this trend does not apply to the city of Solingen
the focus will be sharpened in the inner city area and concepts will be brought to the fore
Strong increase in sexual abuse of children
This area of crime has become a particular focus of public attention due to the cases of abuse that have come to light in Lügde and Bergisch Gladbach
the police have massively increased their personnel capacities
so that the dark field could be cleared up and this clearing up also explains the increased number of cases
Increase in crimes against the elderly with trans-regional perpetration
crimes against the elderly have increased (e.g
"These crimes are particularly reprehensible
as they focus on the weak members of society," says Liedke
There are cases in which well over 100,000 euros have been stolen and the perpetrators are constantly developing new strategies
Although there was a slight increase in the number of crimes after corona
the curve has fallen significantly over the last 10 years
"This area of crime no longer plays the role it did in the 2010s
We see this development as very positive," says Chief Criminal Director Liedke
Further developments and detailed figures can be found in the police crime statistics 2023 (on the right)

one created as the result of a groundbreaking invention: in 1884
French chemist Count Hilaire Bernigaud de Chardonnet used nitrocellulose to produce the first so-called artificial silk
The following decades see rapid development focusing on the search for synthetic textile fibers and their manufacturing technologies
Barmag battles its way through the eventful early years of the manmade fiber industry
the ‘Roaring Twenties’ and the Great Depression – and suffers the extensive destruction of its factories at the end of World War Two
With the unstoppable success story of purely synthetic plastic fibers such as polyamide
the company flourishes from the 1950s through to the 1970s
for the textile industry at the time important
industrial regions and garnering prestige across the globe in the process
Barmag reaches the very pinnacle of the market and becomes the preferred technological development partner for the manmade fiber industries in China
The company has been a high-impact brand under the umbrella of the Oerlikon Group since 2007
Oerlikon Barmag is a leading supplier of manmade fiber filament spinning systems and part of the Manmade Fibers Solutions business unit of the Oerlikon Polymer Processing Solutions Division
And our aspirations have not diminished: “The striving towards innovation and technological leadership has been
this has been observable in such trailblazing innovations as the revolutionary WINGS generation of winders for POY in 2007 and WINGS for FDY in 2012
the focus of new and further developments is very much on digitalization and sustainability
Oerlikon Barmag has – as one of the world’s first systems manufacturers – been implementing fully-networked smart factories for globally-leading polyester manufacturers since the end of the last decade
This sustainability commitment is not only evidenced by the e-save label introduced for all products back in 2004: Oerlikon is endeavoring to also make all its sites carbon-neutral by 2030 and to acquire its energy exclusively from renewable sources
whose achievement could be helped by the Oerlikon Barmag anniversary
states Georg Stausberg: “Innovation begins with creativity
And remembering the past provides plenty of motivation and inspiration for the future.”
