the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) held its national conference in the town of Riesa
Over 200 buses brought protestors from across Germany came to block this carnival of reaction
Over the weekend, the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) held its national conference in the Saxon town of Riesa, two hours south of Berlin. Six weeks before national elections in Germany, the AfD is polling around 20 percent — which would make it the second-largest party in the Bundestag — after getting a boost from the far-right billionaire Elon Musk.
nearly 15,000 antifascist protestors came to Riesa
they divided into five “fingers” (groups) and blocked all the roads leading into town

Heavy police presence in place as far-right party meets in Saxony to finalise details of campaign platform
Thousands of people have demonstrated against a convention of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as political parties launched their campaigns for the country’s election next month.
A heavy police presence was in place in Riesa – in the eastern state of Saxony, an AfD stronghold – and officers cleared some protesters from the streets. However, the two-day convention started a little more than two hours late as many delegates’ trips to the venue were slowed by blockades.

Polls show AfD in second place, with about 20% support, in the run-up to the 23 February elections. However, Weidel, who this week held a live chat on X with the tech billionaire Elon Musk, has no realistic chance of becoming Germany’s leader as other parties refuse to work with AfD.
The conservative opposition Union bloc leads polls on about 30%, and its candidate, Friedrich Merz, is the favourite to become the next chancellor.
The incumbent centre-left chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is hoping for victory, but there has been little sign of significant movement in the polls, which show support for his Social Democrats at between 14% and 17%.
Scholz leads a minority government after his unpopular and rancorous three-party coalition collapsed in November when he fired his finance minister in a dispute over how to revitalise Germany’s stagnant economy. The elections are being held seven months earlier than originally scheduled.
Scholz conceded on Saturday that mistakes were made and said that “maybe I should also have ended the coalition earlier”. But he said it was time to look to the future. “Let’s fight,” he told delegates at a party convention in Berlin, which formally confirmed his nomination as its candidate in a show of hands.
He accused Merz’s Union of having no serious plans to tackle Germany’s problems and said it was making “expensive promises for the absolute top earners” that would “rip a gigantic crater in our budget”.

RIESA, Germany — Thousands of people demonstrated against a convention of the far-right Alternative for Germany on Saturday, blocking some roads and delaying the meeting's start as parties launched their campaigns for the country's election next month.
A heavy police presence was in place in Riesa — in Saxony state, a stronghold of Alternative for Germany, or AfD — and officers cleared some protesters from the streets. The Union is focusing on boosting Germany's stagnant economy in particular and on reducing irregular migration. Weidel assailed it as a "party of fraudsters" on Saturday, urging people to "vote for the original" and strengthen her party.
She called for closing Germany's borders to undocumented migration and large-scale deportations of asylum-seekers, making clear she has no problem with the politically charged term "remigration".
She pledged to return to service the Nord Stream gas pipeline that was damaged in 2022 explosions and won loud applause for saying that AfD would tear down all wind turbines — which she described as "windmills of shame" — if it came to power.
At a news conference in Hamburg, Merz concentrated on his own party's offer of "fundamental change" after the coalition of center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed.
He said he aims to lead "a government that stops arguing; a government that draws up reliable laws that also endure in the longer term", producing a reliable environment for domestic and foreign investors. "Then we will have higher potential growth, and then we will have higher actual growth again."
Scholz is hoping for a come-from-behind victory, but there has been little sign of significant movement so far in polls that show support for his Social Democrats at 14 to 17 percent. His coalition government collapsed in November when he fired his finance minister in a dispute over how to revitalize the economy, leading to an early election.

Stephen Bunting claimed his first European Tour title at the Elten Safety Shoes International Darts Open in Riesa on Sunday to complete a 'dream' week in Germany
Bunting defeated Nathan Aspinall 8-5 in the final to lift his second trophy in four days
having won Premier League Night Nine in Berlin on Thursday
which comes almost 11 years since his European Tour debut

it's been a dream week for me," said Bunting
who averaged over 101 across the tournament
Bunting began Finals Day with a 105.51 average in a 6-4 win over Cameron Menzies
before defeating Karel Sedlacek 6-2 in the quarter-finals
The semi-finals saw Bunting win a deciding leg against fellow-Premier League star Luke Humphries

The battle lines in Germany's political landscape were clearly drawn this weekend in the small eastern town of Riesa
party gathered to nominate its candidate for chancellor in the Feb 23 snap election
thousands of protesters mobilized to oppose what they see as a growing fascist threat
leading to a confrontation that captured the essence of Germany's current political moment
Polling at around 20 percent and currently placed second among German parties
the AfD has achieved what was once unthinkable in post-World War II Germany
The surge in AfD's popularity has triggered an equally powerful countermovement
evident in the estimated 12,000 protesters who descended on Riesa from across the country
Protesters shouted anti-fascist slogans including "No to Nazis" outside the venue of the AfD convention where co-leader Alice Weidel was chosen as the party's candidate for chancellor in next month's election
Demonstrators successfully blockaded key access routes to the convention center
forcing police to mobilize in large numbers and use pepper spray
and causing a two-hour delay to the start of the two-day party gathering
having been caught in the blockades herself
rallying the 600 delegates with praise for defying what she termed "the left-wing mob"
while AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla characterized the demonstrators as "anti-democrats and terrorists"
we are protecting the right of people to live in safety without the fear of deportation or being attacked
We are all making it clear: Riesa is not a peaceful place for fascism."
Analysts said Weidel's live X chat last week with US technology billionaire and the world's richest man
did little to change her prospects of becoming the country's leader
because Germany's established parties all maintain a strict policy of non-cooperation with the AfD and say they will not partner it in a coalition government
The election frontrunner remains the mainstream conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party
which is polling at 30 percent with its candidate Friedrich Merz widely expected to become chancellor
While the union led by Merz campaigns on economic revival and immigration control
Weidel dismissed it as a "party of fraudsters" and has urged voters to "choose the original" instead
Weidel called for closing Germany's borders against undocumented migration
and stated she had no issue with using the controversial term "remigration"
meaning a wide-ranging campaign to expel foreigners from Germany
She also promised to restore the damaged Nord Stream gas pipeline and pledged to dismantle the country's wind turbines
The AfD's draft manifesto further outlines radical changes to national policy
including Germany's withdrawal from the eurozone and a return to nuclear power
At a news conference in Hamburg on Saturday
Merz focused on his party's promise of "fundamental change" following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's unpopular and fractious coalition in November
Merz pledged to form "a government that stops arguing; a government that draws up reliable laws that also endure in the longer term"
arguing this would create stability for investors and lead to renewed economic growth
Polling at just 15 percent and now in third place
Scholz's Social Democratic Party gathered in Berlin where he acknowledged missteps but rallied supporters with a resolute "let's fight"
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the East German town of Riesa on Saturday in a bid to blockade the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party congress
Protesters chanting “no to Nazis” blocked roads in the town
preventing many of the party’s 600 delegates from reaching the convention venue and ultimately delaying the kick-off of the proceedings
Police estimate some 10,000 demonstrators will be in Riesa over the course of the weekend
Delegates are also poised to give final approval to the AfD’s campaign manifesto
The draft version of the text advocates tougher immigration policies and Germany’s exit from the euro
Merz has ruled out any sort of collaboration with the far-right group, as have all the rest of the parties expected to secure seats in the Bundestag
ideologically opposed European politicians are united in their ban of the practice
Residents are demanding a role in the reconstruction of their cities
People rarely think about Europe’s criss-crossing energy system
what went wrong (and right) on Monday and what happens next
“This has never happened before,” said Sánchez
warning it may take longer than expected to restore power
Jan 11 (EFE).- The far-right Alternative for Germany party on Saturday confirmed Alice Weidel as its candidate for chancellor in the country’s upcoming election
Latest polls suggest that the party could secure 22 percent of the vote
placing second behind the conservative CDU-CSU bloc
Weidel’s nomination took place during the AfD congress in Riesa
which began two hours late due to protests by thousands of demonstrators who blocked access roads and the congress venue
Weidel thanked the police for “freeing” her car from what she described as “a mob of leftists ready for violence,” referring to the protesters as “Nazis painted red.”
Weidel also extended her gratitude to Elon Musk for livestreaming the congress on his platform X
“Freedom of speech!” she shouted in English to the crowd’s applause
Weidel outlined the party’s hardline policies
pledging to close Germany’s borders and reject undocumented migrants
then let it be called remigration,” she declared
using a controversial term that refers to deporting immigrants and people with foreign roots
The AfD candidate vowed to dismantle Germany’s participation in the European asylum system
and send a clear message that “the borders are closed.”
She also proposed scrapping climate policies
and restarting the Nord Stream gas pipeline with Russia’s Gazprom
Weidel criticized the government’s move away from fossil fuels
calling it “ideological madness.”
took aim at Germany’s gender studies programs
She also railed against what she called “queer-woke” ideology
stating that Germany’s universities should focus on “practical education
Weidel accused the leading CDU-CSU bloc of copying the AfD’s agenda
“Vote for the original,” she urged
“Germans want freedom—individual freedom
and the freedom to live without state interference.” EFE

The Asp admonished the fans in attendance in Riesa for impacting the peformance of those on stage
may have played its role too as Price appeared to be affected by the chorus of boos and whistles heading in his direction
The Iceman put himself in a prime position to move into the quarter-final before succumbing to the commotion around him
Price took a 5-3 lead over Aspinall but missed match darts to allow his opponent to draw level
despite initially responding to the whistle as he made his way to the Oche
A 121 checkout eventually saw Aspinall prevail
Aspinall could not help but reflect on the atmosphere the crowd had created for his match
you have a better day when we're playing good darts
"Stop whistling because it affects the players
You pay your money to watch good darts and you're preventing good darts."
Aspinall is not the first player to have been outspoken about the crowd in Germany this weekend. Following his 6-4 win over Darius Labanauskas, Stephen Bunting also expressed his frustrations after Labanauskas was particularly targeted by whistles
"Can we just have a few things right," said the Liverpool fan
"We are all here to enjoy the darts and have a good time
Whistling when people are throwing must stop
Nathan Aspinall overcame Gerwyn Price after falling behind(Image: PDC)“But come on
We need to give him all the support he can get
"Darius is a fantastic player and really good friend of mine
I feel so disappointed for him and I was just lucky to win
Ultimately it was Bunting and Aspinall that met in the final of the competition on Sunday night
The Bullet sealed an 8-5 victory over his in-form opponent having also seen off Luke Humphries and Karel Sedlacek earlier in the day
Richard Veenstra will replace Michael van Gerwen in the Elten Safety Shoes International Darts Open in Riesa

Germany: A key congress of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was delayed Saturday as thousands shouting "No to Nazis" protested outside the venue in the eastern town of Riesa
Once the congress started the party's 600-odd delegates approved co-leader Alice Weidel as candidate for chancellor by acclamation ahead of a snap general election on February 23
The two-day meet is also expected to agree the party's election programme
The draft version of the manifesto includes a pledge to leave the euro
reversing Germany's exit from nuclear power and a tough immigration policy
The programme was delayed by around two hours due to protests preventing delegates reaching the venue but eventually started just after 12pm (1100 GMT)
Police said at least 8,000 demonstrators had assembled outside the town's convention centre
The protestors braved the cold to shout slogans such as "no to Nazis" and listened to music from a stage erected by organisers
a police spokesman said there was "no serious unrest" but that one road on the way to Riesa remained blocked by protestors
Protest organisers said earlier on Saturday that police had hit groups of demonstrators and deployed pepper spray
A statement from protest organisers said more than 12,000 people had turned out from all over Germany to voice their opposition to the AfD
colourful and determined protests in many locations inside and outside the town," the statement said
said: "Today we are protecting the right of people to live in safety without the fear of deportation or being attacked."
"We are all making it clear: Riesa is not a peaceful place for fascism," she said
Home » Sports » A familiar face: Former head coach Riesa Blackwell returns to Starkville High cheer
STARKVILLE — Starkville High School cheerleading has experienced success in recent years
doing well at regional and state competitions while sending increasing numbers of cheerleaders to the collegiate ranks
Much of that success can be credited to Hannah Harris
Harris stepped down to focus on her family
“I’m excited,” Starkville head coach Riesa Blackwell said
“The program has progressed a lot since I left and that’s our goal is to keep progressing
We’ll continue to focus a lot on school spirit and community spirit
supporting our teams in any way we can and supporting our schools
What was initially planned as an interim head coaching position turned into a full-time position after Blackwell found an opening within the school district
“I was originally stepping in from April to June to help them get through that busy time for cheer,” Blackwell said
but then a position opened up in the district that I thought I would enjoy.”
who served as an assistant during Blackwell’s original tenure
Blackwell said she’s excited to see what Starkville can continue to do
“Coach Harris did some really great things,” Blackwell said
I’m just coming in and trying to keep it moving in that direction.”
Along with the state competition in December
the team will compete in several other cheer meets this fall
allowing for more opportunities to get adjusted to more intense competition as a 7A school
Blackwell said she thinks a new choreographer will help with that adjustment
but she thinks growing community involvement is important
Blackwell will stress a continued emphasis on school spirit that will hopefully produce even more collegiate cheerleaders
“We’re going to try to improve on that and continue to up the difficulty of our stunts and tumbling
things like that to really prepare our cheerleaders to be competitive at the collegiate level.”

BiaVest was founded in 2021 by food-sector specialists Hilliard Lombard and David McKernan
BiaVest’s fourth major investment in less than two years and its first acquisition in continental Europe
gives the buy & build investor a platform to create a leading ambient pan-European food branded business
Riesa Nudeln will take its place in the BiaVest portfolio alongside leading convenience & snacking supplier Nomadic
fresh-doughnut vendor Offbeat Donuts and award-winning “better for you” brand Nobó

Riesa Nudeln has a strong presence across key German retailers such as Aldi
The pasta company also has a strong online presence and its own webshop
Riesa Nudeln will be able to double its annual pasta output to 50,000 tonnes
That increase is partly due to a €4 million investment in a new production line for spätzle
The investment in the new line will generate an estimated €15 million in additional annual revenue
BiaVest will also facilitate Riesa Nudeln’s expansion into new markets
will retain a 20% stake in the company and continue to be involved in an advisory capacity
will also remain on board together with his dedicated team of food professionals

while also leveraging the manufacturing site’s existing potential
These considerations were crucial in determining our choice of partner
and we are excited to work together with BiaVest to develop Riesa Nudeln.” – André Freidler
Carlsquare served as the exclusive financial advisor to BiaVest
The company’s Riesa brand is sold through German retailers including Aldi
Ireland-based food investment group Biavest has acquired 80% of German pasta company Riesa Nudeln
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed
Products are also sold directly to consumers on its website
with annual revenues of more than €40m ($42m)
employs 150 people and operates a manufacturing facility in the same town where it is headquartered
Riesa Nudeln is completing a €4m new production line for its flagship pasta specialty
The company’s current investment programme will see it double its production capacity to 50,000 tonnes of pasta
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Biavest said the acquisition is to “continue to drive the growth of Riesa
both organically and through further acquisitions
to develop a leading ambient food branded business in Germany and continental Europe”
It added: “This investment will further enhance capacity and facilitate expansion into new markets
generating an estimated €15m in additional annual revenues.”
They will retain a 20% stake in the business and will “continue to be involved” in the business as advisors
we have found a capital-strong partner with a great deal of expertise to drive the brand business forward while at the same time leveraging the site’s existing potential
“These considerations were very important to us in our choice of partner
and we are pleased to be able to continue to accompany the company’s development in partnership with BiaVest.”
Riesa Nudeln will continue to be led by CEO Mike Hennig
The deal is BiaVest’s first acquisition in continental Europe and its fourth investment in two years
The investor was set up in 2021 by former Aryzta executive Hilliard Lombard and David McKernan
who worked for coffee group Java Republic for more than 25 years
Lombard said: “Riesa is a brand with a respected heritage and proven provenance in Germany
BiaVest’s portfolio consists of the UK and Irish convenience snacking brand Nomadic

The impact of the Covid pandemic on the global supply chain has been widely reported
and experts warn these climate-induced disruptions will only get worse
The Covid pandemic has rightly received most of the blame for global supply chain upheavals in the last two years
But the less publicized threat to supply chains from climate change poses a far more serious threat and is already being felt
The pandemic is “a temporary problem,” while climate change is “long-term dire,” said Austin Becker
a maritime infrastructure resilience scholar at the University of Rhode Island
“Climate change is a slow-moving crisis that is going to last a very
and it’s going to require some fundamental changes,” said Becker
every coastal transportation network is going to face some risks from this
and we’re not going to have nearly enough resources to make all the investments that are required.”
Of all of climate change’s threats to supply chains
sea level rise lurks as potentially the biggest
years before sea level rise begins inundating ports and other coastal infrastructure
supply chain disruptions caused by hurricanes
and other forms of increasingly extreme weather are jolting the global economy
A sampling of these disruptions from just last year suggests the variety and magnitude of climate change’s threats:
Subscribe to the E360 Newsletter for weekly updates delivered to your inbox. Sign Up
“The Malaysia node in the global supply chain that hardly anyone was aware of turned out to be critical,” Christopher Mims, a Wall Street Journal technology columnist and author of Arriving Today: From Factory to Front Door—Why Everything Has Changed About How and What We Buy
“It illustrates how a bottleneck anywhere in the supply chain can interfere with the availability of critical goods.”
Scientists say that such climate-related disruptions are bound to intensify in coming years as the world warms
and other transportation and supply infrastructure will be threatened by increases in sea level of an estimated 2 to 6 feet — and perhaps more — by 2100
Around 90 percent of the world’s freight moves by ship
inundations eventually will threaten most of the world’s 2,738 coastal ports
whose wharves generally lie just a few feet to 15 feet above sea level
The rate of future sea level rise is so uncertain and solutions so elusive that only a few port managers have taken action to counter the threat
and only a fraction have tried to assess it
A 2020 paper in Maritime Policy and Management even asserted that if current climate science is correct
“global supply chains will be massively disrupted
beyond what can be adapted to while maintaining current systems.” The paper argues that supply chain managers should accept the inevitability of economic upheaval by the end of this century and embrace practices that support rebuilding afterwards
not all experts believe supply chains are highly vulnerable to climate change
“I don’t lie awake at night thinking about what will happen to supply chains because of climate,” said Yossi Sheffi
director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Transportation and Logistics and the author of numerous books about supply chains
“I think supply chain disruption is usually local and limited in time
and supply chains are so redundant that there are many ways to get around problems.”
Each stopping point is a node in a tree-like system that conveys raw materials from the system’s farthest tendrils to sub-assemblers along its roots to manufacturers
Products like smartphones possess hundreds of components whose raw materials are transported from all over the world; the cumulative mileage traveled by all those parts would “probably reach to the moon,” Mims said
These supply chains are so complicated and opaque that smartphone manufacturers don’t even know the identity of all their suppliers — getting all of them to adapt to climate change would mark a colossal achievement
Yet each node is a point of vulnerability whose breakdown could send damaging ripples up and down the chain and beyond it
At last, the shipping industry begins cleaning up its dirty fuels. Read more
Port authorities have three ways to cope with sea level rise and all are inadequate
They can retreat to inland locations with river links to oceans
but available sites with requisite conditions are few and expensive
They can build costly sea dikes around the ports
but even if the dikes are strong enough to resist the rising ocean
they must continually be raised to keep up with sea level rise
and only buy time until eventually being overtopped
They also divert floodwater to nearby coastal areas unprotected by the dikes
port officials can raise by at least a couple of meters all port infrastructure so that the port can continue to function as sea level rise proceeds
But the rate of the rise is so uncertain that choosing a cost-effective height for the increase is problematic
And raising wharves and other port infrastructure would still leave unprotected ports’ vital ground transportation links — railroads and highways — and
In a 2016 paper in Global Environmental Change
Becker and four colleagues concluded that raising 221 of the world’s most active seaports by 2 meters (6.5 feet) would require 436 million cubic meters of construction materials
an amount large enough to create global shortages of some commodities
The estimated amount of cement — 49 million metric tons — alone would cost $60 billion in 2022 dollars
Another study that Becker co-authored in 2017 found that elevating the infrastructure of the 100 biggest U.S
seaports by 2 meters would cost $57 billion to $78 billion in 2012 dollars (equivalent to $69 billion to $103 billion in current dollars)
and would require “704 million cubic meters of dredged fill … four times more than all material dredged by the Army Corps of Engineers in 2012.”
“and we’re not going to have nearly enough resources to make all the required investments
So among ports there’s going to be winners and losers
I don’t know that we’re well-equipped for that.”
combined with the deficiencies and expense of the proposed solutions
have largely prevented seaport managers from addressing the threat
and Ocean Engineering that Becker co-authored found that of 85 U.S
maritime infrastructure engineers who responded to a survey
only 29 percent said their organizations even had a sea level rise policy or planning document
the federal government offers no guidance on incorporating sea level rise projections into port design
“This leaves engineers to make subjective decisions based on inconsistent guidance and information,” the study said
and “leads to engineers and their clients disregarding [sea level change] more frequently.”
In response to the threat of increasing supply chain disruption
manufacturers are considering enlarging their inventories or developing “dual supply chains” — supply chains that deliver the same goods via two different routes
But both solutions would increase production costs
and would contradict the still-predominant “just in time” manufacturing approach
which relies on robust supply chains to eliminate the need for companies to keep extensive parts inventories in stock
American companies could shorten their supply chains
shifting production facilities back to the U.S
but in many cases they would be removing their factories from the constellation of suppliers that grew up around them in countries such as China and Vietnam
How a Russian vessel’s grounding highlights perils of Arctic shipping. Read more
there’s a built-in inertia in supply chain management
“[Long-term] strategy and logistics are opposite things,” Dale Rogers
a business professor at Arizona State University
“Logisticians are always trying to execute the strategy but not necessarily develop it
They’re trying to figure out how to make something happen now
and climate change is a long-term problem.”

and he established a 4-1 cushion after punishing a host of missed doubles from a profligate Van Gerwen
The reigning champion extended his lead to 6-1 after following up a clinical 76 combination with a 12-dart break
although Van Gerwen responded with back-to-back legs to preserve his slender hopes
the Dutchman was unable to make further inroads
as Price produced a brace of 14-dart holds to triumph with a 105.6 average and clinch his eighth European Tour title
“I think I am half-German now!” joked Price
who has won four of the last five editions of the International Darts Open
“I’ve been getting great support over the last couple of months and it is showing on the board
I know I’m playing well and I’m putting players under pressure
He missed a couple of doubles and those crucial doubles have got to go in if you want to win tournaments
“Thankfully I’ve been scoring well and those crucial doubles have been going in
because on another day it could have been a different story
“I am sure it was a great game for the crowd
Michael is a great player and he will come back
Van Gerwen was bidding to win a record-extending 36th European Tour title – his first at this event – although he was unable to recover from his subdued start against an imperious Price
The Dutch superstar dropped just five legs in his three victories on Sunday
following up a 6-1 success against Jose de Sousa with a whitewash win over his Premier League rival Peter Wright
Van Gerwen then defied a spirited rally from home favourite Martin Schindler to reach his first European Tour final of 2023
closing out a 7-4 success having earlier led 4-0
Reflecting on his defeat to 2021 World Champion Price
Van Gerwen admitted: “Gezzy is in good form and when he’s in this form he is going to punish you
“That’s part of the game and you have to learn from that
It is nice to make the final but for me it’s not enough
“The crowd are always phenomenal but you want to perform well for yourself and for the fans watching
“When you make too many mistakes against a player of Gerwyn’s calibre
This weekend’s action also saw Schindler continue his impressive progress in the sport by reaching his first European Tour semi-final on home soil
The diminutive German followed up his opening round win over Dutch icon Raymond van Barneveld by dumping out Premier League duo Nathan Aspinall and Jonny Clayton to reach the last four
Van Duijvenbode also bowed out at the semi-final stage
defeating his compatriot Danny Noppert and Australia’s number one Damon Heta before succumbing to Price for the second straight event

Avaa kuvien katseluTalitiainen (Parus major) on pihojen tutuimpia lintuja
Simossa tiaiset intoutuivat alkutalvesta nokkimaan lehmien utareita
mistä aiheutui maitotiloille isojakin vahinkoja lehmien sairastumisen vuoksi
Kuva: Kukka Ström / YleAntti Heikinmatti15.1.2020 14:45•Päivitetty 15.1.2020 16:48Etelä-Lapin Simossa on talven aikana törmätty outoon linturiesaan: Navettaan sisälle päässeet talitiaiset (Parus major) ovat nokkineet lehmien utareet avohaavoille
niin että lehmiä on jouduttu tautien vuoksi jopa lopettamaan
Asiasta uutisoi ensin Maaseudun Tulevaisuus. Siirryt ulkopuoliselle sivustolleLehden mukaan Lapista tapauksia tiedetään kolme
Virpi Parpalan viidenkymmenen lehmän maitotilalle tiaiset iskivät marraskuussa
– Kolmetoista vuotta on pihattonavetta ollut
ja satunnaisesti ennenkin on talitiaisia ja muita lintuja tullut sisälle
Mutta mitään tällaista ei ole ennen tapahtunut
Hänen mukaansa tiaisparvi pölähti sisään navettaan marraskuun pakkasilla tehdyn remontin aikana avoimista ovista
Ja pian sitten päästiin omin silmin näkemäänkin
Parpala kertoo törmänneensä vastaavanlaisiin havaintoihin myös muilta merilappilaisilta maatiloilta aiempina vuosina
Tiaiset nokkivat ilmeisesti maitorasvan houkuttamana lehmien utareiden vetimet avohaavoille
– Erityisesti pohjoisen talvessa talitiaiset valitsevat usein yhden ruokintapaikan
Maitotilallisille nokkimistaipumuksesta koitui kuitenkin isot vahingot
– Lehmiä jouduttiin lääkitsemään tulehdusten aikana ja maitotuotosta meni paljon hukkaan
Neljä teuraaksi vietyä lehmää oli vielä kantavia
Parpalat aikovat hakea vahingoista korvausta ELY-keskukselta
Valkosiipiset varikset herättävät kummastusta – poikasena syöty roskaruoka on syynä värivirheeseen

Did you know that NFL star Camryn Bynum of the Minnesota Vikings spends the NFL off-season in the Philippines
He and his family established the nonprofit Bynum Faith Foundation to provide aid and holistic relief to underprivileged communities in the United States and the Philippines through food distribution
providing tools for livelihood and education
and inspiring youth in athletic activities
Bynum goes to the Philippines to personally oversee these projects
did you know that Flag football is part of the sports program of the LA 2028 Summer Olympics (LA28)
The Olympic website describes Flag football as a non-tackling version of American football in a five-on-five format
Instead of tackling a player to stop a play
Flag football is played by an estimated 20 million people in 100 countries— including the Philippines
When Bynum discovered that the Philippines had its own small Flag football community
a national sports association–Flag Football Philippines–affiliated with the Philippine Olympic Committee
and players who loved the sport as much as he did
he was inspired to use his platform and resources to help elevate and grow awareness for Flag football in the country
Camp Beezy is a series of Flag football training camps where players of all experience levels can learn how to play the game the right way
Bynum brings in professional coaches and trainers
and sometimes his fellow NFL players (the Kansas City Chiefs’ Nikko Remigio
and the New England Patriots’ Jaylinn Hawkinshave all volunteered for Camp Beezy’s previous editions) to work with the participants
The camp gives participants an opportunity to learn tips and skills from professionals and apply what they learned in a friendly tournament
While Flag football arguably doesn’t have a huge following in the Philippines
its inclusion in LA28 could be a turning point
and in a 2024 interview with The Game he said: “I think there’s so much good talent out here
so the fact that they’re getting into flag football now
it’s just a matter of experience and people actually playing the game.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by RIESA Management
RIESA has partnered with the Bynum Faith Foundation to help expand Flag football’s reach in the Philippines: “We were intrigued by the idea of promoting an up-and-coming international sport
We believe that Flag football is a sport that Filipinos can excel in
This is relatively a new sport to the country that we believe can grow and expand in a few years
The Philippines has put so much into professional sports such as basketball but we have yet to qualify for the Olympics
Maybe it’s time for us to groom Filipino athletes that suit our best physical attributes–speed
With companies already interested in a possible Philippine team for LA28
RIESA’s support for Flag football would jumpstart things for the sport
RIESA is a locally-grown service hospitality company that manages and develops individually distinct lifestyle boutique hotels and restaurants
and Buglas Isla Cafe (whose popularity and success in Dumaguete prompted the company to open branches in Arcovia
Bynum is now even more motivated to share and grow the game that he loves— and has given him the life that he has in the Philippines
4 takes place in Vermosa from February 20-22
it will bring in 75 players with the best potential from around the Philippines and Asia to experience “a day in the life of an NFL player.” There will be coaching
The goal is for professionals to evaluate the participants with an eye towards forming a national training pool for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028
RIESA is hosting a lunch for Bynum and his team at Buglas Isla Cafe in Alabang on February 23
and he hopes that RIESA’s partnership with the Bynum Faith Foundation is a sign that Flag football will finally have its day in the sun: “I am hoping one day
Flag football can be an after-school sports activity offered for boys and girls in grade schools
he knows that Filipino athletes have the speed
so he will keep on doing what he is doing to spread his love for the game and to help get a Philippine team to qualify for Flag football in the LA Olympics
