The attack took place in the square in front of an Aldi supermarket
Two people – a 59-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man – were seriously injured in a knife attack by a 23-year-old German in Rochlitz
The attack took place in the forecourt of an Aldi supermarket
the 23-year-old had already entered the store in the afternoon
but the 23-year-old later returned and sat down near the supermarket entrance
he attacked her with a knife and then lunged at the 18-year-old who had intervened to defend her

Klara owes her life to a particular combination of luck
Rochlitz himself grew up in a family that had “experienced the full wrath of the Shoah,” as he described it
“You slowly understand that something horrific happened to your grandfather and to many other people who were members of your family,” the filmmaker told The Atlantic

Here we observe a striking and unexpected pattern of CTC generation dynamics in both patients with breast cancer and mouse models
highlighting that most spontaneous CTC intravasation events occur during sleep
we demonstrate that rest-phase CTCs are highly prone to metastasize
whereas CTCs generated during the active phase are devoid of metastatic ability
single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of CTCs reveals a marked upregulation of mitotic genes exclusively during the rest phase in both patients and mouse models
we find that key circadian rhythm hormones such as melatonin
testosterone and glucocorticoids dictate CTC generation dynamics
that insulin directly promotes tumour cell proliferation in vivo
the spontaneous generation of CTCs with a high proclivity to metastasize does not occur continuously
but it is concentrated within the rest phase of the affected individual
providing a new rationale for time-controlled interrogation and treatment of metastasis-prone cancers

The New York Times Op-Docs is proud to announce that Matan Rochlitz’s “I Have a Message for You,” which debuted as an Op-Doc in October
The Peabody Awards honor “the most compelling and empowering stories released in electronic media during 2017.”
“‘I Have a Message for You’ exemplifies Op-Docs at its best both by telling a provocative story and using a creative visual approach to captivate audiences.”
A stunning example of storytelling at its most moving and redemptive
Rochlitz’s “I Have a Message for You” introduces viewers to Klara Prowisor
a Holocaust survivor now living in Tel Aviv
The film illustrates Prowisor’s extraordinary story of survival and healing with a hybrid of animation
himself the grandson of a Holocaust survivor
the telling of which had become part of what it meant to have survived
But Prowisor’s story — which the filmmaker first heard from his grandmother
who was Prowisor’s neighbor in Tel Aviv — felt different to him
Peabody Award winners and nominees will be celebrated at a gala evening event on Saturday
May 19 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York

It was 6.30 on a crisp winter morning in Victoria Park in east London and I was sitting on a plastic stool being pulled backwards by a bicycle
We were trying to understand what goes on in the minds of runners as they charge through the streets
What does it do to them and what can we find out about ourselves by interrupting them at this moment of vulnerability and clarity
Film making is an extraordinary opportunity to ask people questions that you can't ask at any other time
you are asking questions on behalf of anyone who might see it
In a way you have the public on your shoulder
The problem though is that it's always on your terms
your interviewee is stuck on a chair in front of you; they can't escape
My friend and collaborator Matan Rochlitz had the idea that people might be more open if they were asked questions while running
They'd be distracted; perhaps you could ask about things that you couldn't otherwise
Perhaps it would be a different way of asking some big existential questions
Technically it was not that simple. Running and filming is not an option
Filming from a car wouldn't allow us to film the parks and canals where runners congregate
The solution was a bicycle trailer on which we installed a plastic stool
The plan was that we'd take turns to cycle and film
we made an extension arm from the camera which we gaffer-taped to a long directional microphone
The contraption looked like a fluffy rocket launcher
We started practicing our speed: sidling up to people and trying to maintain a similar pace
After a couple of early rejections ("No sorry." and
thanks.") Rochlitz made contact with man running aggressively through the autumn leaves with his headphones on
The conversation started with "Why are you running today?" and quickly led to the story of his father
Matan Rochlitz and Ivo Gormley on their filming equipment. The honesty and clarity with which the stranger expressed his love for his father
He looked at us without questioning where we were from
In a situation in which he might otherwise be vulnerable and cornered
We spent another seven minutes with him and he eventually left us
shouting his email address to us and running out of the park across grass
He was the third person we'd tried to talk to
This interview set the tone – we'd generally start with a question about why the person was there
and try to take the conversation to something deeper
We realised early on that we'd only really get 10 minutes with each person before their route took them out of the park
We needed a smooth surface to keep the camerawork smooth so we settled on loops of the wide path that skirts the edges of the park
This gave the interviewees a lot of control: they could leave at any time
As we gained confidence we started to be able to delve deeper
We heard about people running with heads filled with the potential of love
the moment of realising that you won't have children
would they reject our requests for a conversation
In the meanwhile the seasons were rolling by; we kept going during the winter and the summer brought new waves of enthusiasts
After each trip we found ourselves exhausted but increasingly inspired
I became quite envious of this state of mind and the focus that the runners expressed
It made me excited about being human and about their sense of peace and understanding of the present
Many of the runners gave us their advice before we parted company
At the end of a long day of pedaling around the park
I had a conversation with a woman who told me about her regretting about not having had children and how it was now too late
because it's all you've got." We smiled at each other and she ran off
What do you want to do with your life?) are hard to ask and are not often answered sincerely
The Runners, a short film directed by Matan Rochlitz and Ivo Gormley and produced by Banyak Films, is released online today. You can view the film here from 7pm on 14 November 2013. A haunting film about one survivor’s unfathomable decision to save herself and the surprising denouement
Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history
My grandmother Lea once told me a story about the woman who lived next door to her in Tel Aviv
of her capture by the Nazis in Belgium and of an unfathomable decision she had to take to save herself
and am pleased to share it with you in this Op-Doc film
I was familiar with stories from the Holocaust
My grandfather had survived the horrors of the camps himself
and his stories formed a large part of our family’s shared narrative
But this woman’s story felt different
guilt and redemption – and the epilogue was truly extraordinary
once I’d become a documentary filmmaker
I decided to find out whether the woman was still alive
Klara was 92 years old and still living in the same Tel Aviv apartment
I flew out to see her the following week and asked her to tell me the story I’d heard from my grandmother in her own words
and when looking into the darkness and recalling that difficult time
for the first time looking as old as her age
but told her how sorry I was for having stirred up her feelings and memories like that
but she did say she was happy I had come to see her
Matan Rochlitz is a filmmaker and a musician based in Rome
His short documentary The Runners played at Sheffield Doc Fest in 2016

I’ve mentioned liminal spaces recently on It’s Nice That
but this short documentary by Matan Rochlitz and Ivo Gormley is the perfect example of just how powerful they can be
The Runners follows the two filmmakers as they travel around London’s Victoria park
interviewing seasoned joggers as they pace their routes
Liberated from all sense of responsibility as the runners are
the interviews quickly progress to deeply intimate topics; one woman divulges secrets about her sex life
while others broach the private subjects of mental health
family members and ageing with the strangers they are being interviewed by
It’s an extraordinary demonstration of the thinking time running can provide
and the complete trust which can occur between strangers with the help of anonymity
This is filmmaking at its absolute simplest and most emotive – and if anything is going to have you itching to lace up your trainers and hit the pavement then this is it

A group of business partners from Brooklyn paid $12.1 million last month for the Greens at Chester site
a 110-acre property next to the Whispering Hills condo complex on which the Town of Chester has approved construction of 431 homes
That the property had changed hands was already known
but the price and buyers' names couldn't be confirmed until the deed transfer and a mortgage were filed with the Orange County Clerk's Office on Nov
Those documents indicate the closing was on Oct
27 and the price was $3 million less than what the seller
obtained a $4 million mortgage from Fried at the time of the purchase
The mortgage provided an "organizational chart" naming six partners in the Greens at Chester LLC: Jehuda Landau
Goldman and Rochlitz hold the largest ownership stake
They listed as their address a business on Steuben Street in Brooklyn
The 110-acre housing site is just south of Route 17
near Lowe’s and the Route 94 interchange at Exit 126
who first applied to build housing on the property 32 years ago
finally got approval in 2013 to build 237 detached
single-family houses and 194 semi-attached homes
with a total bedroom count of 1,293 (an average of three per home)
The buyers may now proceed with those plans
Warwick district’s solar field to be finished end of month
Work on the Warwick School District’s $5.7 million
2.41-megawatt solar-generating field is expected to be completed by the end of this month
and it’s expected to start generating electricity by New Year’s Day
When the solar generating field goes online
school district-owned solar project in New York
which is located on 10 acres off Sanfordville Road
is expected to generate about 3 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually
enough to offset the district’s electricity bills
The electricity will be fed into Orange and Rockland Utilities' grid
The district will get a credit of about $300,000 a year
That will knock its yearly electricity bill down to a "net zero" district officials said
and although it ran into some trouble spots
which complicated the installation of several panels
The district borrowed the money to pay for the project
the district’s assistant superintendent for business
said 53.8 percent will be returned to the district through New York state building aid
The solar project is part of an Energy Performance Contract with the state
It also qualifies for incentives through the state’s Energy Research and Development Authority
District officials said it will have no tax impact on taxpayers
They calculated that the project will pay for itself in 12.82 years
The project includes security cameras and fencing for the safety of students
Trees have been planted along Sanfordville Road to provide a visual barrier
The solar power project is among several environmental initiatives in the district
Other projects include the purchase of propane-powered school buses; LED lighting; a food waste disposal system; a rain garden at the high school
green education programs for students; and a district sustainability policy
“Our community certainly wants to be good stewards of the planet
but they also expect us to be good stewards of the district’s resources and taxpayers’ money,” said Warwick schools Superintendent Dr

Oak Bay High held a Take Your Kids To Work Day for Grade 9 English students
The program is designed for students to be able to observe a work place and gain an appreciation and understanding for the work
wanted Take Your Kids To Work Day to be an empowering experience for his daughter Julia Preston
Preston brought his daughter and three other girls to the RCMP HQ in Victoria and then to the West Shore RCMP detachment to introduce them to inspiring role models within the RCMP
Major Kathy Rochlitz and spoke about many things including the history of the RCMP and what it is like to be a high-ranking female member
the opportunity to meet with the girls was awesome,” says Rochlitz
I think it is really important that we all share our experiences with girls of any age to show them what opportunities are out there.”
67 per cent are working in the traditionally “female” occupations of teaching
clerical or other administrative positions
This compared with 31 per cent of employed men
A recent Statistics Canada report cites this as one of the reasons that contributes to women earning 87 cents for every dollar earned by a man
women make up just 25.6 per cent of senior managers
Studies have shown that broadening the representation of women in different fields has been found to have a positive effect on the numbers of women pursuing those subjects
Other studies have concluded that there is a strong correlation between women with role models and women with leadership goals
“The girls were really interested in what my career was made up of and the experiences that I have had
Whether they choose a career like this or not but just to know that when you set your mind to something you can do anything of your choosing,” says Rochlitz
“I was asked ‘what’s it like being a female in such a high ranking positon?’ and it’s funny because you go about your own thing on a daily basis and you kind of forget the impact you can have on others.”
The students also went to the Forensic Identification Unit where they worked with Cpl Marie-Ann Davidson
They learned about forensics and they had the opportunity to dust
lift and examine old exhibits using a high tech laser
RCMP Crime Analyst Shawna Meleski went over the role of a crime analyst with the students and explained how she had been able to greatly assist in solving past homicide files
the girls met with three female members from the Major Crime Unit and spoke about the dangers of social media
They also got a taste of being behind bars and getting mug shots
The tour ended at the RCMP dispatch (telecomms) where the students were partnered up with a telecomms operator and listened to a few minor calls as they were reported
“I think it is a great opportunity for young people to know that they can come and they can learn and experience different things,” says Rochlitz

Two teenagers from Langford have been charged with arson in relation to the Savory elementary fire last week
West Shore RCMP major crimes investigators arrested a 16-year-old male the morning of Sept
turned himself in at the Western Communities Courthouse on Monday morning after a warrant was issued for his arrest last week
Kathy Rochlitz said the suspects were tracked down in part due to information passed on by the community
“The West Shore RCMP wishes to thank all those concerned citizens who came forward and provided information
allowing us to further our investigation,” Rochlitz said
It brings a level of closure to all those displaced by the fire.”
Sooke School District superintendent Jim Cambridge said the quick arrest points to the close co-operation between the district
“It really shows when there are crimes like these
whoever does it gets caught,” Cambridge said
Rochlitz couldn’t say if the young men had attended Savory in the past or speak to possible motivations behind allegedly setting the fire
burned through an administrative wing of the 45-year-old elementary school in Langford
A security alarm had been triggered at the school two hours earlier
The fire caused less than $50,000 in damage
but the school will likely be closed for the rest of the month
About 175 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 have been relocated to temporary classrooms at nearby Crystal View and Happy Valley elementary schools while Savory is cleaned and repaired
Savory elementary was last hit by arson in 1992
The 16-year-old youth will appear in court on Sept

Susan Szoke was born Zsuzsanna Rochlitz and grew up in a progressive Hungarian Jewish family that counted among its members some of Europe’s feminist pioneers (she was even delivered by Hungary’s first female physician)
was a proud Jew but had no time for what he considered to be meshuga (idiotic) religious customs
He ran an estate farm that specialized in pig-fattening
worked as a school teacher before marrying Zoltan and helping to run the farm
one had the impression of a family in which every relationship was characterized by mutual adoration
She credited her idyllic childhood with giving her the strength to survive the horrors and hardships that were to come
Deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944 at 19 with her parents
She survived Joseph Mengele’s medical experiments before being enslaved in a weapons factory
but she was saved by a nurse who secretly provided her with care
Her grief left her living in a kind of emotional fog for a long time
She slept all day and sewed doll clothes at night to make money
She had always wanted to work with children and eventually got a job in a nursery school
the son of her family’s doctor during her childhood
He was also a survivor but had lost his first wife
rumours spread that another wave of antisemitic violence was coming
they crossed into Austria on foot with the help of a family of sympathetic shepherds and eventually settled in upstate New York
Susan separated from Janos to escape his emotional abuse
in part because she was appalled by the war in Vietnam
but also to be closer to her only surviving cousin
she returned to school and fulfilled her dream of becoming an early childhood educator
She worked in a daycare for newcomer families
which she called her “little United Nations.” She took special pride in working with the children of refugees
Susan was a dedicated and passionate caregiver
but her many traumas had stolen her capacity to be connected in the ways that those whom she cared for needed most
she needed to be so close as to be suffocating
and yet she was always emotionally distant to an extent that was damaging
It was a tragic irony that she could not build with her own child the kind of deep bond that she described experiencing in her own family and considered to be the source of her remarkable resilience
She could not stop the trauma from moving to the next generation
Susan dedicated herself to mastering the art of babushka-clad Hungarian grandmotherhood
she cooked immense quantities of delicious food
froze it and distributed it to everyone in the family
When her grandson Peter attended university in Halifax
she once sent him avocados in the mail because she’d found some particularly nice ones
She craved the safety found in consistency
living in the same apartment for the last 50 years of her life
She never owned a television or a computer and used a rotary phone until the bitter end
She read the paper every day and spoke out strongly against the political right
Susan carried forward her family’s strong pacifist and humanist traditions
refusing any suggestion that war could ever be justified or hate ever rationalized
Her family cherishes that legacy most of all

her ability to bring light to difficult situations or laughter
persistent investigative skills and her genuine care for others,” said Kathy Rochlitz

“She was too young to be taken from us and her passing has left us all grieving
We are grateful this year that COVID restrictions have lessened and that we can gather today and remember Sarah and the impact she had on all of us individually and as a community.”

including the death of a pedestrian on Goldstream Avenue in Langford
pedestrians and cyclists alike to slow down
Kathy Rochlitz said the return of fair weather can bring out the worst in drivers
breeding overconfidence in good driving conditions
It also brings out more pedestrians and cyclists
as people emerge from a winter spent mainly indoors
"Our days are getting longer and people are out enjoying the pleasant weather," Rochlitz said
"So it's a timely reminder to talk about some safety
While no specific programs are in place as a response to the recent incidents
she said RCMP have identified road and traffic safety as priorities for enforcement this year
Police are making efforts to be more visible and are targeting specific behaviours
such as distracted driving from cell-phone use
Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and cyclists before crossing the road and to take time to use marked crosswalks
Drivers need to make eye contact with pedestrians at crosswalks
While drivers tend to keep a close eye on traffic
they sometimes fail to notice people crossing the road
trying to find that hole in traffic," she said
When drivers have that sense of 'I need to make a move
it creates trouble because they're not paying attention to their full field of view
Obeying amber lights – not racing to beat the red – increases intersection safety
especially when drivers in the opposite direction are waiting to turn left
"People don't give themselves five to 10 minutes of wiggle room
I'm rushing home because I have to pick the kids up.' All of those types of things play into these situations."
Cyclists are reminded to ride on the right-hand side and to stay off sidewalks
unless the skill level or age of the rider makes it unsafe for them to be on the road
Following these basic rules will help to avoid some of the incidents seen lately

Roundabouts can be a source of confusion and frustration for drivers and pedestrians
Observing a few simple rules can help you navigate your way around:
• Signal to get off the roundabout so that those waiting to get on know it is safe to do so
assume they are continuing around the roundabout and don't try to pull in front of them
• Don't enter the roundabout until you are sure it is safe to do so
watch for people on crosswalks and be prepared to stop
Anyone whose New Year goal is to take up running can find inspiration in a recent documentary by two Hackney filmmakers that explores how pounding the tarmac gives you greater focus on the things that matter in life
Ivo Gormley and Matan Rochlitz interviewed runners in Victoria Park over the course of a year for their film The Runners
“We thought it was an interesting way to find out what was going on in people’s heads,” says Gormley
“We had about ten minutes with each person and the challenge was to try to get into a deep conversation with them and to open up about quite personal stuff.”
Starting with an ice-breaker about running
the filmmakers gained the runners’ trust before asking them more personal and deeper questions
The resulting 12-minute short sees runners speak frankly about sex
“It was just extraordinary because people were just so clear,” says Gormley
“There was this amazing clarity and openness to these bigger
philosophical questions about what life is for.”
In total around 120 runners were interviewed
with the filming taking a year to complete
“We were interested in showing all the different types of people,” explains Gormley
“We did early mornings and dusk and there’s one day when it was really snowy
So we tried to cover the whole range of environmental moods and feelings of people in the park.”
Gormley and Rochlitz took turns riding the bike and asking the questions
while runners would direct them to slow down or go faster
Gormley says: “The idea was that they were the boss and we would be responding to them
which I think is a nice reversal of the normal roles in a documentary interview where the interviewer has a light shining on the subject who can’t really escape.”
Being filmed whilst running would for many be a less than appealing prospect but
the act of running actually gave the interviewees a sense of empowerment rather than vulnerability
He adds: “They are dealing with things like not having children or a serious case of depression and in that moment of running they feel quite objective
They are able to sort of feel confident enough with their own relationship with that problem to see it as something that can be overcome.”
