do you want to do one more season?’ They go up to Keady and Randy Cadwell up in Southern Pines

As the leaders in their division across all three phases

German dressage trainer and rider Gerhard Pietsch has passed away on 1 May 2023
Pietsch made his name as a respected dressage rider and trainer
He was trained as a bereiter at Heinz Lammers' stable in Olfen
where he rode and taught for years at Elizabeth Oppermann-Willers' Kronenhof equestrian centre in Langen
Pietsch was most successful in the saddle of the Oldenburg licensed stallion Remy Martin S (by Rubinstein x Gardegeneral)
which he began competing in 1998 and took to Grand Prix level in 2004
He rode him in the national Grand Prix classes at the CDI Frankfurt in 2006
2007 and 2008 amongst numerous other national shows
His other last international horse was Quinto (by Quaterback) which he showed at the 2006 CDI Strassen
He became the 2002 and 2003 Hessian Professional Dressage Rider Champion and at the Hessian Regional Grand Prix Championships he won gold in 2002
In 2009 Katja Willers took over the management of Kronenhof and a period of change followed for Pietsch
Pietsch on Remy Martin S winning the Hessen Dressur Trophy at the 2004 CDI FrankfurtIn 2010 Pietsch moved to the equestrian centre Josefshof of the Heckenberger family in Upper Swabia and in 2014 he relocated to the sales yard of Peter Thanner
In this period he competed in the Bundeschampionate qualifiers with horses such as Sohnlein Brillant (by Sir Donnerhall x Ehrentusch) and Don Hitmeyer (by Diamond Hit) as well as showed FEI horses Finnegan's Wake (by Furst Piccolo x Newcastle)
and Don Vincente (by Don Vino x Wittelsbach) amongst many others
In his last years he lived in Rodgau and worked as a freelance trainer
Since 2017 Pietsch suffered from the debilitating disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) which also ended his competitive career that year. The same disease took the life of German Olympian Herbert Krug
disclosing his fear for the end stage of ALS in which he would need a ventilator to breathe
He made it known that he would not let the crippling end phase ALS take control over bis life
He was supported through this difficult time by his wife Una

Adrienne Lyle (USA) and Harmony’s Duval danced to victory in FEI Grand Prix competition to kick off Tryon Spring Dressage 1 CDI 3* presented by Adequan®
earning a personal best score of 75.130% to top a field of 14
a 2007 Hanoverian mare (Hochadel x Rodgau) owned by Diane Fellows
garnered a score of 72.478% to be awarded second place
while Jill Irving (CAN) and her own Degas 12
a 2002 Hanoverian gelding (De Niro x Regazonni)
rounded out the podium on a total score of 70.978%
Competition continues tomorrow featuring the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Adequan®
For Lyle and the 2008 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Rosseau x Riverman) owned by Duval Partners LLC
today’s clean test was “a big deal” and full-circle from their first National Grand Prix competition at TIEC exactly a year ago
“At this show a year ago we did our first National Grand Prix
so he’s only been in Grand Prix competition for a year
It’s always been about getting him [to] focus,” she elaborated
“and not get flustered and get through a test without mistakes
so this is a really big accomplishment.”
“He hasn’t shown that many places in his life
and we’ve only been at [Adequan® Global Dressage Festival] all season
I love this showgrounds – it’s maybe my favorite showgrounds in the world to show – but it’s great for the horses to get to come to a new place and ride in a new stadium with atmosphere like this
Her young mount showed great composure despite several rain delays through the day
and “is always ready to go,” she revealed
“He’s a horse that I get out several times before his test
so he’s in and out a lot through the day
The good thing about him is he’s always ready to go – he has endless energy
Lyle called Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) at Tryon Resort the ideal stepping stone for her next challenge with Harmony’s Duval: taking on Europe
“I wanted to come to this CDI to get one more show in before we go to Europe this summer
I think this is a really good stepping stone to get him some exposure and solidify him a little bit more
He got a grant to go to Europe this summer from the USDF that will help fund him there,” Lyle continued
so he’s never been out of the country
He’s a really wonderful horse – we’ve had him since before he was saddle-broke
so it’s a fun culmination of many years of work with him.”
Harmony’s Duval will take on the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* on Sunday
which Lyle predicted will feature his strongest work: “We’re on to the Special on Sunday
which is always a really strong test for him
His piaffe and passage work is always a highlight for him
really excited about him,” she concluded
Small Tour competition saw Pablo Gomez Molina (ESP) best FEI Prix St
Georges CDI 3* presented by Helgstrand Dressage competition aboard Furst Foriano Ymas
a 2007 Westphalian gelding (Furst Piccolo x Donnerbube I) owned by Yeguda de Ymas S.L.
Reserve honors went to Jennifer Baumert (USA) aboard Handsome
a 2005 Hanoverian gelding (Hochadelx Weltmeyer) owned by Betsy Juliano
a 2010 Hanoverian gelding (Lord Laurie x His Highness) owned by Max Ots
scored 71.324% to round out the podium and take third-place honors
In the FEI Intermediate II 16-25 CDIU25 USEF Qualifier
Canada bookended the podium with Naima Moreira Laliberte (CAN) and I Do Kiss
a 2006 Swedish Warmblood stallion (French Kiss x Donnerfly) owned by KML S.A.R.L.
receiving a score of 68.412% to take first
Reserve honors belonged to Anna Weniger (USA) aboard Don Derrick
earning a 63.353% with the 2004 Dutch Riding Horse gelding (Don Ruto x Libertino I) owned by Dawn Weniger
Third place went to Camille Carier Bergeron (CAN) aboard Giles Bergeron’s Acoeur
The FEI Junior Rider Team CDIJ NAYC/USEF Qualifier saw Camille Molten (USA) score 67.697% to win aboard her own Heros

This is why we have to get out at horse shows where they have great venues like this
Holzer noted that the experience helped her learn as a rider and a trainer
“I came in like gangbusters and then realized
I’ve got to tone it down.’ Then you feel the horse come back to you
Holzer expressed her gratitude for the support of her owner
“I’m very grateful for the Roberts family for having this incredible facility and for allowing us to have these great shows to come to

Duerrhammer has been partnered with the liver chestnut gelding for almost three years and noted that last weekend was the first anniversary of the horse’s first time competing in the grand prix
Tomorrow’s Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W will be their first time riding their freestyle in a CDI
I was quite happy with him,” said Duerrhammer
“He was very attentive and tried really hard
The quality of things was good; it just needs to get cleaned up a little bit and get some more run-throughs of the actual test
We’re very excited to be under the lights tomorrow night.”

the Astra was driven on large floor rollers
producing the same resistance the car would experience in real life conditions from wind and rolling friction
“This enables driving with road-like loads
It does not depend on the weather and we can test various scenarios under consistent conditions,” said Bernd Justen
Opel’s Vehicle Performance Manager for compact class cars
“Apart from the appropriate sound of the engine or rolling noise
this includes the sound made by closing a door or the clicking of the indicator
We initially check the simulation-based basic settings
Based on this we keep on working until the Astra meets our noise requirements.”
Start/Stop system noise and driving partial or full engine load – all captured by the highly sensitive microphones for analysis
One typical procedure that Opel describes for is the ‘full-load
a test that the all-new 1.4-liter ECOTEC turbocharged unit passed with flying colors
Such refinement (for its segment) was achieved through a noise-optimized engine block design
adding noise protection to the integration of the cylinder head into the exhaust manifold
decoupling the high-pressure injection valves and trimming the timing chain for quiet concentricity
“Our dummy heads confirm the exemplary noise level,” said Justen while talking about the mannequin-looking figures in the Astra’s cabin
“There are highly sensitive microphones fitted in the ears of dummy heads too
They allow us to record and replay noises in the same way that a ‘real’ human would perceive them.”
Opel managed to differentiate between the upward and downward direction of noise
helping the dummy hear in basically three dimensions
Also, through so-called binaural measurements, Opel conducted a binaural transfer path analysis and synthesis, achieving a vehicle sound that would be pleasant for occupants
“This allows us to identify and analyze the different sound sources,” explained Justen
While you could argue that the new Astra isn’t the best looking car in its class or that it should definitely stop trying to upset the luxury class
there’s no denying the fact that Opel went through great lengths making sure they had a potentially segment-conquering car on their hands

Pressure grows for nations to deliver on promised biodiversity targets at UN conference
Two years after a historic biodiversity agreement was signed
countries will reconvene next week to assess their progress in saving the planet’s plant and animal life
signed by 196 countries at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15)
set an ambitious goal: to protect 30% of the Earth’s land and water by 2030
a target known as "30 by 30." At the time of signing
17% of terrestrial and 10% of marine areas were protected
those numbers have seen little change since then
will focus on reviewing the progress made toward these goals and deciding on mechanisms to ensure they are implemented effectively
A report from the European Parliament highlights that this meeting will also address the crucial issue of funding — countries will discuss how to raise the hundreds of billions of dollars needed to protect nature by 2030
with $20 billion due for developing countries next year
such as reducing food waste and curbing the introduction of invasive species
Despite the historic commitments made in 2022
progress toward the "30 by 30" goals has been slow
Nearly half of the participating countries have yet to submit national plans detailing how they will achieve their targets
Only about 46% of countries have submitted their biodiversity targets
and less than 15% have submitted actionable plans to meet them
which has yet to submit either targets or a plan
India has also not submitted a national plan
has pledged to protect one-third of its land and waters by 2030 under the Biden administration’s initiative
Some countries plan to use the COP16 conference to announce the creation or expansion of protected areas and how they will allocate biodiversity funding
has committed $800 million to four Indigenous-led conservation projects
conservation groups like WWF remain concerned about the lack of detailed biodiversity goals from many nations
WWF International’s head of global advocacy
described the commitments as "disappointing," noting that many plans lack clear actions
As of the 91 countries that have submitted their targets
over half have committed to protecting at least 30% of their terrestrial areas
and about a quarter have set targets of between 5% and 30%
a third of the countries have committed to a target of 30% or more
The biodiversity plans that countries must submit are complex
requiring coordination across various governmental and non-governmental entities
Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity
explained that while the submission process has been slow
it is not surprising given the complexity and scope of the plans
Governments must develop detailed targets and action plans and coordinate efforts
which are often affected by habitat fragmentation
more than 40% of migratory species are in decline
who leads the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership
emphasized that birds and other migratory species do not recognize the boundaries of protected areas and move according to their needs
One of the most contentious topics at the conference will be financing the conservation efforts
Developing nations have been advocating for $200 billion annually by 2030 to support biodiversity-related projects
with rich countries pledging $20 billion starting next year
That amount is expected to gradually increase to $30 billion by 2030
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reported that development finance for biodiversity more than doubled from 2015 to 2022
global biodiversity funding is still short of the $20 billion target by 23%
Much of the biodiversity that needs protecting is located in developing countries
where limited financial resources hinder efforts
Advocates argue that securing adequate funding will be critical to achieving these goals
the conference will address other important biodiversity targets
One such goal is to halt human-induced extinctions of threatened species by 2050 and to significantly reduce extinction rates
have raised concerns that some of these goals lack specificity
noted that goals like stopping species extinctions need to be more clearly defined and quantified
The COP16 meeting will also explore the role of biodiversity in mitigating climate change and in promoting global health
particularly in preventing future pandemics
Another key issue will be the adoption of a global mechanism to ensure fair distribution of benefits from genetic data derived from plants
which are often used to develop commercial products such as pharmaceuticals
As the world faces unprecedented challenges in conserving its biodiversity
the COP16 conference represents a critical opportunity for countries to come together
and take bold actions to preserve Earth’s plant and animal life
these ambitious goals may remain out of reach
