A restaurant in classic style - this is how Christian Planko describes his restaurant, Oechsle. In Bundesstraße, the experienced chef offers simple dishes with a modern interpretation.
Planko serves noble wines to accompany the haute cuisine: the wine assortment includes almost 100 selected positions, mainly from Germany and France. The fact that the pairing of food and wine is particularly important to him is also reflected in the name of the restaurant (for all beer drinkers): the Oechsle scale is a unit of measurement for the density of grape "Most" named after its inventor Ferdinand Oechsle. The Most weight is a measure of the amount of sugar in grape juice.
After completing his formation at gourmet-restaurant Victorian in Düsseldorf and working in star-rated kitchens, Christian Planko decided to open a restaurant that combines haute cuisine and cosiness. He found a suitable location in the beautiful premises of the former "La Mirabelle", which he transformed into a classy, modern place after three months of renovation. The menu is clear but varied, and vegetarians also get their money's worth.
Contrary to popular assumptions about portion sizes in haute cuisine, the plates at Oechsle are so lavish that we share a dessert. A good decision, because the chef has meant well for us with the créme brûlée with marinated berries. In conversation, Christian Planko tells us that it is important to him that his guests go home satisfied and return. We, dear Christian, were very satisfied and we will come again!

Germany’s Felix Langberg captured the Continental Europe heavyweight belt with a one round knockout over Patrick Korte on Saturday at the Grand Elysée venue in Rotherbaum
The undefeated fighter continues his rise after a demolishing performance to retain the regional title
The 31-year-old fighter’s power was obvious from the start and Korte could do little against the attacks of the powerful knockout
Langberg has only managed to win and made his power in the ring evident
which has led him to success in a couple of years.
It was the 12th victory of his career and number 11 by knockout
The Hamburg shipping companies Ahrenkiel Steamship and H
Vogemann are merging their activities involving the technical management of bulk carriers
with the name of Ahrenkiel Vogemann Bulk (AVB) starts out managing a fleet of 14 bulk carriers with a total freight capacity of around 1m dwt including three vessels of Hamburg-based KG Reederei Roth
The fleet’s focus is currently on the supramax and panamax segments
but there are plans to branch out into other size categories
two new handysize vessels are expected to go into service at Reederei Roth in the first quarter of 2017 and will likewise be managed by AVB
The majority shareholder of AVB is Ahrenkiel Steamship
Dr Michael Silies and Jan-Eric Panitzki (both from Ahrenkiel Steamship) alongside Karl Mohr (Vogemann) have been appointed as the directors
Ahrenkiel Steamship and Vogemann had already established a joint pool for supramax bulk carriers last year
The new joint venture that is now taking shape
with its operational base at Vogemann’s business premises in Hamburg-Rotherbaum
is intended to take the partnership between the companies to the next level and secure an improved market position by unlocking synergies in technical management
Vogemann will take charge of chartering for the bulk carriers managed by AVB
“In establishing the joint venture we are significantly extending our expertise in the bulk carrier area
which complements our existing focus on the midsize container ship segment
The strategic merger of bulk operations brings huge advantages for both partners because by combining our efforts we can now offer a unified market presence and a broad range of services
We are open to other partners joining,” commented Dr Michael Silies
CEO of Ahrenkiel Steamship and director of the new joint venture AVB
added: “In today’s difficult market environment close cooperation among partners is crucial
By pooling the partners’ capacities we are boosting our competitiveness in the technical management of bulk carriers and have plans to expand this area further over the coming months.”

Hamburg hotel reviewA stylish and relaxing lakeside retreatAll listings featured on Condé Nast Traveller are independently selected by our editors
airy and filled with light from every angle
The Fontenay is a five-star destination that brings calm from the outset
branches of pink blossom and neutral shades lit by big bald lightbulbs
the hotel is designed to encourage guests to slow down and stay put all weekend – without venturing into the city
A ten-minute taxi ride from the main train station
the hotel is an urban retreat on the south-westerly shores of Lake Alster
With a row of matte-grey Porsches and R8s leading up to a white curvaceous building
this is a weekend hideaway for wealthy retirees looking for early-morning jogs with their Dobermans
a session in the Finnish sauna and dinner at the Lakeside restaurant – a two-Michelin-star treat
guests will find peace in the library with its reclining armchairs and adjoining day bar
or perhaps in the smoking room where the menu features everything from Davidoff cigarillos to hefty Trinidad Topes
Built on the site of the former InterContinental hotel in the Rotherbaum district, The Fontenay opened in 2018 – the newest luxury hotel in Hamburg for more than 20 years. Founded by German billionaire businessman Klaus-Michael Kühne, the hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and has a sister property in Mallorca
Kühne had an affinity with the location and made the development of this property into a passion project
There are 113 rooms and 17 suites with walk-in wardrobes
parquet flooring and private balconies overlooking manicured lawns or the lake
rooms are flooded with natural light and decorated in cream and grey
giving them an unfussy and clean aesthetic
Dotted around are individual pieces designed by Georg Jensen and artwork by the Peruvian painter Antonio Máro
Guests will find both thick fluffy slippers along with flip flops for the spa
Mars and Kinder bars along with bottles of juice and water – along with a couple of packets of Haribo
It’s always a relief to find a GHD hairdryer that doesn’t wheeze your hair dry
and both the shower and toilet contain digital settings to adjust temperatures
play music and switch on jazzy lighting as guests get ready for an evening at Lakeview
is one reason guests flock to The Fontenay
the spectacular restaurant is the essence of fine dining without the pomp and stuffiness
guests will taste sweet Breton lobster in lemongrass bouillon
and carrot curls and folds all tweezered into place
each dish is a tiny piece of art – but keep space for the Limousin lamb
Parkview is more relaxed but just as enthusiastic and experimental with hearty plates of braised veal and pulpo
an avuncular member of staff with a nose for pairings
In keeping with the relaxed and friendly vibe, there is no main reception, only three desks that feel a little like a private bank, and a concierge desk with staff popping up like meerkats to offer help or cartons of water for car rides. Calls to room service are answered quickly, housekeeping is prompt, and staff are constantly visible, but at a distance, so there is no fawning around.
There is little communication to guests about the hotel's sustainability strengths or efforts to reduce energy consumption, but the property has achieved a GreenSign certification level 4 (out of 5), which determines a hotel's sustainability level. More could be done to remind guests to reuse towels and gowns and introduce split recycling bins in rooms. In the garage, there are three EV charging points.

"People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them" James Baldwin.
The exhibition "Hey Hamburg, do you know Douala Manga Bell?" can be admired at the Museum am Rothenbaum (MARKK) until the end of 2022. It tells and shows the evocative, exemplary and widely forgotten story of the rebellious King Rudolph Douala Manga Bell from the Bell trading dynasty.
A story that took place a little more than 100 years ago in Douala, Cameroon, and whose telling should help to better understand and come to terms with a central part of our history, that of the colonial era.
King Douala Manga Bell is still a symbolic figure in Cameroon today. The Bonn-educated lawyer, who spoke fluent German, defended the sovereignty of the local population of Douala with his actions. He stood up for the right to property and fair trade with the Germans and was killed for it.
The German colonialists saw Douala Manga Bell's struggle for fair trade as a threat to their interests. So they sentenced him to death by hanging on flimsy charges. This was despite the fact that Douala Manga Bell's struggle was peaceful. He believed in the German legal system until his death and fought against the expropriation of his people with petitions and telegrams.
To make it exciting and inviting, especially for young people and families, the makers decided to tell the story in the style of a graphic novel. This approach is a complete success. The excellent drawing style of Karo Akpokiere brings the spirit of the colonial era back to life and immerses the viewer in the story.
The exhibition also combines historical objects from the Littoral region with exhibits of contemporary art from Cameroon. This concept works. One feels integrated into the life and history of Cameroon, which is told in a vibrant, comprehensible and vivid style. By the way, those who cannot make it to the exhibition in Hamburg can also experience the museum visit as a virtual tour.
The plan is to bring the exhibition to Douala in Cameroon after it has been shown in Hamburg, thus laying the foundation for further cooperation between Hamburg and Douala. We wish this vital project many interested visitors.
For those who would like to explore the topic of colonialism and its consequences beyond the exhibition, we recommend the work of Immer.wieder:Widerstand, an artists' collective from Hamburg. Finally, we would like to leave the closing words to Princess Marylin Douala Bell: "Inform yourselves, so we will have the opportunity to exchange."

The scented candles Arty Fragrance by Elisabeth de Feydeau are just as intriguing as the ones by Irish label Max Benjamin. The centerpiece is the floor-to-ceiling vintage shelf with its almost complete collection of Swiss bed linen manufacturer Christian Fischbacher. Most labels on display at GuteN8 are family- or owner-managed businesses with the highest quality standards and a visible passion for luxury.
Primarily however, he caters to customers in store – and he does it in the friendliest, most honest and perceptive way possible to make his customers feel understood.
I could have easily stayed around much longer, there is just so much to be discovered at GuteN8. But a cozy evening on the couch was ahead of me, with a new fluffy dressing gown and a lemongras-ginger-scented candle awaiting me at home alongside a good book.

It’s been less than six weeks that I spent the night at the Hotel am Museum following my friend’s recommendation. We were lucky enough to get one of the few rooms, over the weekend at that, a fact that borders on miracle.
Despite it’s central location on Rothenbaumchaussee, the carefully decorated rooms are quiet nonetheless. The overall atmosphere is tasteful yet unpretentious. We left our everyday lives at the door and Ms Göckede, the owner, gave her all to spoil and pamper us from the first second on. Decades of practice! If you consider she was Jil Sander’s private chef.
As soon as we arrived I was in our room with a cup of tea and a deliciously light cookie in my hands. From cotton balls to bathrobe and slippers, everything was taken care of. The beds are unbelievably comfortable and the fact that the shower and sink are in the room, but the restroom is two more steps away across the hallway makes for an even better arrangement.
Several other breakfast dishes are prepped and arranged on a long table, and while Ms Göckede is working her magic in the kitchen the guests devour warm rolls, homemade jams, cold cuts, cheese and eggs in any form imaginable.
Any possible detail is perfectly set in this beautiful house. Everything went the way it should, and we were plain happy. The only thing you need to take care of yourself is an early reservation!
