Siemens Healthineers is expanding its site in Rudolstadt
a new manufacturing building will be built on the site
The new manufacturing plant will produce electron accelerators that will be used as radiation sources for Varian's cancer therapy devices
Varian has been a Siemens Healthineers company since 2021
The hall will also expand the production line for so-called liquid metal plain bearings
a core technology of high-end computed tomography and angiography systems
The expansion of the site is expected to create around 50 new jobs by 2027
Siemens Healthineers is investing around €25 million in the 2100-square-meter manufacturing facility
The new building is to be built in a CO2-neutral manner and operated as sustainably as possible
"The expansion in Rudolstadt is a strong commitment to the location and the entire region
create jobs and remain an attractive employer," says Peter Schardt
Chief Technology Officer of Siemens Healthineers and responsible for Rudolstadt as a technology location.
In order to meet the growing demand for Varian's radiotherapy equipment
the company needs a second manufacturing site for core components of its radiotherapy devices in addition to Palo Alto in the USA
Siemens Healthineers has the necessary knowledge and already manufactures such components
The electron accelerators from Rudolstadt are to be used for the Halcyon and TrueBeam radiotherapy systems
some of which are manufactured at the Kemnath site in Germany.
Radiotherapy with so-called linear accelerators is one of the most important methods of modern cancer therapy and is used in more than half of all cancer treatments today
Linear accelerators are used both in the outpatient sector and in hospitals for the targeted treatment of cancer.
around 270 employees develop and produce vacuum components
X-ray tubes and components for medical and industrial use at the Rudolstadt plant
angiography systems or mammography devices
The site is also the manufacturing center for industrial electron linear accelerator systems
in non-destructive material testing and scanning to check contents of shipping containers
The plant in Rudolstadt was founded in 1919

Letterkenny man Karol Kerrane has been a resident of Rudolstadt for a number of years and it was his friendship with Jörg Reichl
the local Mayor that started the connections between the towns
many friendships have developed between the civic leaders and local people in the two towns with students from Colaiste Ailigh
St Eunan’s College and Errigal College all involved in exchange programmes with schools and colleges in Rudolstadt
A delegation from Letterkenny travelled to Rudolstadt for St Patrick’s Day celebrations in March this year highlighting the deep connection between the two towns
The weekend was filled with a colourful program that was organized by the Rudolstadt city administration in cooperation with local partners
A delegation of 55 visitors from Rudolstadt will arrive in Letterkenny on Friday for a long weekend visit
The group will get an immediate opportunity to immerse themselves in all aspects of Irish culture
arriving just in time for Culture Night 2024
On Saturday the group will visit Inishowen to see Dunree Fort and Military Museum and then the Famine Village on the Isle of Doagh before returning to Letterkenny
On Sunday the group will visit the Fanad peninsula and will take a tour of the Lighthouse at Fanad
They will visit Portsalon beach before moving on to Rathmullan and finally returning to Letterkenny where the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will provide an evening’s entertainment at Dillon’s Hotel
There will be an opportunity to visit local schools on Monday
The Mayor of the Letterkenny & Milford Municipal District Cllr Gerry McMonagle will host a reception for the delegation on Monday evening
The visitors leave for Dublin on Tuesday for a meeting with the German Ambassador before flying home

NEW: The Effects of the US Foreign Aid Freeze on Freedom House
Persecution of artists only validates the power of artistic expression as a catalyst for change
Free Them All: The Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners
Hajipour is one of many artists around the globe facing repression for their work
advocating for the rights of marginalized groups
and even as a method to cope with arbitrary detention and imprisonment
and their resonant works can be difficult to extinguish
and characterized the charges as part of a larger crackdown on Tamil and Muslim minority groups in Sri Lanka
Jazeem was barred from speaking to lawyers for 10 months
and eventually released with the charges still pending—a tactic to remind him to tread carefully
Artists have even been arrested for the presumption of artistic expression. In 2022, Çiğdem Mater
an activist and filmmaker who participated in the 2013 Gezi Park protests in Turkey
in part for allegedly raising funds to create a film about the protests
a collective to protest the decree and the culture of detention in their country
Both were imprisoned in connection with their activism
The threat of harassment and censorship doesn't only affect artists’ public expression and activism—it can also extend into the home, as Cuban dissident artist Tania Bruguera and Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist and political activist, illustrated in a 2017 panel appearance
“We have generations of [Cuban] people who have been afraid,” said Bruguera
whose father was persecuted by Chinese authorities for his poems and political opposition
saying his father’s sentence in a labor camp and authorities’ scrutiny of his family imparted the idea of self-censorship as a matter of safety
When Weiwei himself was in detention—over a tax fraud conviction that was widely considered retaliation for his activism—guards would taunt him
claiming that his then two-year-old son would forget him
Chinese authorities promote “the so-called stability of a society
“but it’s really at the cost of every family.”
“it interests the younger generation who do not know exactly how much the older generation sacrificed.”
In Syria, Saydnaya prison is notorious for holding political prisoners and military personnel suspected of opposing the regime. It bars visitors, journalists, and monitoring groups, leaving prisoners deeply isolated. Abu Hamdan
heard about the Saydnaya prisoners’ plight and began to research and recreate the sounds that detainees become attuned to in the dark and silent prison
pulls their harrowing experiences out of the darkness
communicating the abuses of the detention center
Repression of art only validates the power of artistic expression as a catalyst for change. Each piece—written, visual, and auditory—has the potential to affect individuals profoundly. Even in the face of persecution, artists’ drive to change the world cannot be stifled. “The regime has destroyed my artwork and violated my rights and the rights of my friends,” Otero Alcántara writes
“We have endured all this and more in pursuit of a dream…none of this has succeeded in extinguishing our dreams.”

Samsung and the South Korean recycling specialist SungEel HiTech want to build a battery recycling plant in the Gera-Cretzschwitz industrial park in the federal state of Thuringia
The plant should have the capacity to recycle 20,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries annually
Construction of the €45 million battery recycling plant in Gera will start in March 2024
The first of two production lines should go into operation in early 2025
The materials are subsequently separated in a mechanical process to leave only raw materials that can be used for new batteries
As reported by the German publications Die Zeit and mdr.de
the joint venture between SungEel HiTech and Samsung had initially been planned for a site in the Thuringian municipality of Rudolstadt
the city council supported the project in a decisive vote only by a narrow majority
The plant is to be built in the Gera-Cretzschwitz industrial park on an area of around 30,000 square meters and will provide 100 jobs
The planned construction by the South Korean partners will be the second large recycling plant for electric vehicle batteries in the German state
since Finnish company Fortum is also building a battery recycling hub in Thuringia
Recycling specialist SungEel HiTech has so far been a familiar name in connection with a battery recycling joint venture within Korea that SungEel fairly recently initiated with SK Innovation
The joint venture is expected to combine SK Innovation’s independently developed lithium hydroxide recovery technology and SungEel HiTech’s nickel
cobalt and manganese recovery technology to “secure a differentiated competitive advantage in the fast-growing market,” according to SK Innovation’s statement at the time
SungEel HiTech is considered a recycling-focused company that made its stock market debut in the summer of 2022
It is the only company in Korea that recovers cobalt
manganese and copper from lithium-ion batteries in a large-scale hydrometallurgical plant
it said at the inter-Korean JV announcement last year
The South Korean recycling specialist SungEel HiTech originally wanted to build a battery recycling plant in Thuringia together with Samsung
specifically in the Gera-Cretzschwitz industrial estate

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joerg (Jörg) Petzold at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie on Saturday March 15
leaving Alice to raise her son and two daughters
He leaves behind his devoted partner of almost 4 decades
Stepfather to Stephanie O’Brien (William)
Michael Craig (Michelle) Beloved brother to Gritta (nee Petzold) Pohl (the late Neil)
predeceased by his eldest sister Lorle (nee Petzold) Mantik (late Edmund)
Adored by his nephews Olaf and Heiko Mantik
He will most certainly be missed by family and friends both here
and was capable of repairing just about anything
as well as creating some wonderful paintings
He enjoyed travelling and vacationed around the world
including numerous trips back home to Germany
which was reflected in his daily life and of course
He was also known for his love of the outdoors
Nothing made him smile more than to be fishing from the canoe
listening to the haunting cries of loons echoing across the lake
sitting around a roaring fire at night or enjoying that first cup of coffee in the morning while watching the sun slowly burn off the mist hovering over the water
This love of the outdoors was instilled upon his children
and we are hoping to have Jörg interred with his mother and sister when the weather is warmer
family celebration of his life will take place at a later date
the world market leader for man-made cellulose fibers
and the German company smartfiber AG/Rudolstadt are expanding their co-operation
In the future Lenzing will exclusively produce the lyocell specialty fibers smartcel and SeaCell developed by smartfiber at the Lenzing site in Upper Austria
In 2007
Lenzing already granted smartfiber a licence for pilot production of new types of lyocell specialty fibers
smartfiber and Lenzing have been co-operating for several years to develop fabrics and on various research projects
the pilot plant of smartfiber is being relocated from Rudolstadt to Lenzing in order to be able to rapidly move ahead with the commercial exploitation of smartcel and SeaCell fibers in spite of rising energy and raw material prices
The integration of the facility in Lenzing
the world’s largest cellulose fiber production site
will enable a significantly better cost structure
the smartfiber pilot plant had recently reached its capacity limits due to the continually increasing order volume
which no longer made it possible to optimally co-ordinate incoming orders and accept large orders
smartfiber will continue to be responsible for the sales and marketing of smartcel and SeaCell
The smartcel and SeaCell fibers are primarily used in home textiles as well as in the fashion and medicine segments
The SeaCell fibers contain valuable active substances from seaweed which promotes health
nurtures the skin and protects against free radicals
Smartcel sensitive is the first anti-bacterial
natural fiber available on the market to which the essential trace element zinc is added
thus enabling regenerative skin care and hygiene in textiles
The management of smartfiber considers the intensified co-operation with Lenzing to be an important and future-oriented step for the benefit of customers which comprises a win-win situation for the two companies involved
Thus the high level of competence on the part of Lenzing with respect to the production and processing of lyocell fibers under the brand TENCEL will be combined with the original and innovative patented technology of the function-oriented fiber products developed by smartfiber
The objective of smartfiber is to be able to offer the best possible quality
service-oriented order processing and intensified sales-driven marketing support to customers in the future
For Lenzing the launch of pilot production for smartfiber at the Lenzing site is a consistent continuation of the research and development partnership which smartfiber and Lenzing have pursued for years
