but if you really want to get to know a place
We talk to a local to get to know the beautiful ski resort of St
There’s a saying in travel: if you want to see the sights
pick up a guidebook; but if you want to discover what makes a place special
We think this is especially true for skiing
Even the most detailed piste maps can’t accurately convey how runs connect
and they almost always leave out details like where to find the best off-piste
Restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor can be hit or miss
its knife and fork icons can’t capture the true atmosphere of a café or tell you if the DJ playing on a specific night is worth listening to
when we set out to put together a guide to the highlights of St
Not only does she explain (far better than any website ever could) what makes her hometown special
her answers also convey something of the joy of living in St
Johann in Salzburg — a sensation the Austrians like to call Lebensgefühl
Katharina Huber has been living in the town of St. Johann for the last three years
she quickly fell in love with the cultural capital of Salzburg thanks to its proximity to the mountains
It only takes her five minutes to get from the office to the slopes
so she’s spent the last few winters spending as much time as possible up on the mountain exploring Snow Space Salzburg which combines the resorts of Flachau
Here she shares her top tips on where to go and what to do
Johann offers easy access to the Snow Space Salzburg with its extensive lift system providing all the variety of skiing you could need
Families will find plenty to entertain and take care of them
welcoming hotels and wide range of restaurants
Johann has a great public transport system which is free throughout the town for both locals and tourists
I’d say the proximity of the town to the mountains is what makes St
It’s a small but bustling town located in the centre of SalzburgerLand
It’s only around 60 km from the German border which means travelling here is pretty much hassle-free – great for families
90% of slopes are blue and red runs and they are always in immaculate condition
Where would you go to ski first on a powder day
Obergassalmbahn lift is a good insider tip
This is where most people meet on powder days it gives you lots of options for riding from the top
There’s also amazing ski touring around here
the resort is a great springboard if you’re keen to access backcountry terrain
so you can go at your own pace and make your own tracks in the snow - usually all by yourself
I would have a coffee at the Buchauhütte or Gernkogel
The coffee tastes like a real coffee house and I usually treat myself to a traditional farmer’s doughnut
Traditional ski hut cuisine is available at the Gernkogelalm and also at the Kreistenalm
The Schniztel on the Gernkogelalm is simply a dream
If you prefer something sweeter and like yeast dumplings or pancakes
It improves a lot down in the trees and it’s a bit better on the Buchaubahn
but I always prefer to drink a hot chocolate in one of the cozy little huts and wait for it to clear
A classic evening for me looks like this: I swing off the slopes and go to the Oberforsthofalm first
where I like to drink a nice cup of mulled wine
Then it’s off to the Butz and Stingl or the Tenne
If you want to go apres-ski but prefer a quieter experience
the Hotel Stern is a great place to relax after a long day on the mountain

DAY ONE WRAPPED up in St Johann im Pongau at the second event of the season on the Dynamic Billard Euro Tour
there were plenty of matches as three rounds completed
With the Tour’s strongest field contesting
there are plenty of intriguing matches set for tomorrow as the field reduces down to just 16
Many of the starting Austrian line-up of 35 players made good progress with big name Mario He defeating Matjaz Erculj of Slovenia by 9-2 and then winning a final rack decider against Dietmar Pitz (Germany) to make his way into Winners’ Round 2 where he faces off against another German in Tobias Hoiss
Other Austrians to advance on the winners’ side include Mirzet Pandur
Joshua Filler (Germany) was gunning for his incredible sixth consecutive Dynamic Billard Euro Tour title in six starts
following consecutive wins starting at the Lasko Open in 2022 and taking in victories in St Johann
He opened his account today with a 9-3 victory over Poland’s Jegor Michejenko and now faces Alvaro Canoniga (Spain) in Winners’ Round 2 at midday on Friday
Commented Filler; “Of course when you look at the stats and the chance to win six in a row
there’s pressure but I’ve had that before the event because I know
the way I play and the way I feel about the Euro Tour is always positive
I was 13 and I had the chance to play Oliver (Ortmann) and Dimitri Jungo and also beat them so I always have good memories when I look back on the Euro Tour so every time I come here
the table is playing good and it’s also my favourite place here
against Niels in 2015 so coming back there’s always pressure and this is what I like about sports
having pressure and having the chance to make records so I always look at the positive things
“When I look back to when I was 17 or so and I looked to Albin who was winning the China Open and his first world title and he was 25 or 26 and I though ‘damn
he’s already that old’ and now I’m 26 myself but I know you can do this sport on the high level until you’re 45 so I still have a long way to go
“Seeing all the new young players is also good because it shows you
we always bring up good people and the younger generation enjoys the sports which is always positive and this is what the future will bring
We have players like Felix Vogel from Germany who’s already been to a final then Walter Laikre and many more
I keep an eye on them and it’s good to see,” he concluded
Another player fancied to do well this week is the in-form Pole
who is starting to make a real name for himself in a national squad that is very deep in talent
Fortunski came through with a 9-6 win over Kostas Connaris (Turkish North Cyprus) and goes up against Sajan Schroter (Germany) tomorrow
Sitting at No.2 on the ranking and having enjoyed his second Euro Tour victory in Tampere last year
Fortunski has emerged as arguably the strongest player in the Polish pack
“I won for the first time in a long time on the Euro Tour last year
so now I focus on every single tournament and I just want to win one of them this year
It’s really tough to win here as there are a lot of really good players in Europe and every match is tough so you have to keep that focus on every single shot and get the luck every now and again.”
Play continues at 9.00 on Friday with the conclusion of Losers’ Round 2 and plays all the way down to the last 16 with a total of eight rounds
Tables 1 & 2 will be streamed throughout on YouTube
while Table 2 will be available throughout on the EPBF platform
All other tables can be viewed on the Kozoom.com website
where there are a variety of subscription options
All Euro Tour tournaments are 9-ball and players compete in a double-elimination format
and then single elimination until the finish
All matches are races to 9 racks with alternate break
Results, live scoring, and draw are available at www.epbf.com

Austria is ideal for skiing and serenity
claimed his second DYNAMIC BILLARD Euro Tour title as he got the better of Tobias Bongers by 9-6 to take the Dynamic Billard St Pongau Open
Bongers had seemed to have done the hard part earlier in the day as he ended Joshua Filler’s long and successful Euro Tour streak and then ousted Mieszko Fortunski from the tournament
Soufi’s speedy all-out aggression and devil-may-care play won the day for him as he entertained a sizeable crowd in the arena
Having recently acquired new playing equipment
Soufi seemed to have adapted to it in no time and what he occasionally lacked in positional play
he more than made up for with unerring pocketing
This is the second time for me but on the Thursday before the tournament started
I had a call from my family that my father was taken to hospital
Today he got out and I promised him I will give my best for him and I’m happy to have won this tournament for my father
“Before the match he was at home and said he would watch the game
I haven’t seen my family for 11 years so it was good to win for them.”
The Syrian won the lag and saw the one ball drop and he completed an excellent runout to take the opener
who struggled a little in semi-final with his break
made no mistakes in the second game as three balls dropped
A 3/9 combination from Soufi took him back into the lead and they both had visits in the fourth game before Soufi asserted himself after Bongers safety escape left a little too much of the 1-ball showing
albeit it with a touch of good fortune to take a 3-1 lead
The Syrian shooter found himself blocked on the 1-ball after his break and elected to push out
They both went back-and-forth on the 1-ball before finally
Bongers was presented with a fairly messy table and couldn’t make precise position on the 2-ball
as the white failed to clear the intervening 8-ball and with ball-in-hand once again
Bongers cleared in what was a must-win rack for him
An illegal break from the German left the cueball in a horrible spot
Soufi put him back in and he played a push and again
His jump shot made good connection with the 1-ball but left it on for Soufi
The layout was extremely tough but Soufi was magnificent in his clearance to restore his two-rack advantage
Bongers fouled with a table length one-rail escape and Soufi set about the table in his aggressive style
trying to bank the 7-ball into the centre pocket which effectively handed the rack back to Soufi for a 5-2 lead
running out from the break to reduce the deficit to two racks but another fast rack from Soufi took him into a 6-3 lead with Bongers now having it all to do
There were two balls on the break for Bongers as well as a good cue ball but the rack became a little messy
Bongers seemed to have done all the hard work
but a miss on the 8-ball unravelled it and Soufi stepped up to make it 7-3
Three balls on the break but with no shot on the lowest ball and Soufi decided to push out
This left Bongers with a couple of options and he cut the 2-ball into the top right pocket
The German #24-ranked player took the next to keep his chances up but could ill afford any mistakes with Soufi two away from victory
Soufi gave himself a slight chance off his next break with two balls down
made it and enjoyed some luck gaining position on the 3-ball
Bongers wasn’t done just yet as he ran out from the break to make it 8-6 but it was now Soufi’s to lose
He made no mistakes though as he got himself over the line with an easy 3/9 combination
“Tobias is my friend and I’ve known him for five or six years we play in the same teams together
He’s been playing very well – his last tournament in the UK Open he finished eighth and he beat some great players here
He’s a good guy and starting to really play well.”
having played down to the final 16 from a starting line-up of 48 players
They will return on Sunday morning at 10.00 to play to a finish
All matches are a race-to-seven with alternate break

ski hire shops and the best of the awesome après ski bars
here’s your essential review of one of Austria's most family-friendly ski resorts
St Johann in Tirol is a family ski resort in Austria’s Leukental Valley
less than 130 kilometres from three international airports
The resort is home to more than 15 slope restaurants and offers skiing on wide
St Johann has a charming small-town feel and with the focus firmly on putting children first
A popular and picturesque ski resort and bustling market town
there is plenty to do for non-skiers and skiers alike
As well as excellent wide pistes and slopes
and top-quality hotels with extensive spa facilities
There are also numerous cross country trails and toboggan runs
It also has its own brewery – the 300-year-old Huber Bräu brewery
If you fancy a break from winter sports a day trip to the city of Mozart
Salzburg is also very do-able as a day trip from St Johann in Tirol
The local skiing in St Johann in Tirol extends to 42km of runs
The vertical of almost 1,000 metres is impressive
but the village height and top lift are not high by modern standards
However the predominantly north and north west facing slopes here have a good record for holding snow
St Johann in Tirol's skiing can be accessed from three different points
Beginners will find wide open and well-prepared nursery slopes at the base of the mountain with more runs to progress to all over the ski area
Intermediates will probably enjoy St Johann in Tirol the most
with interesting and varied terrain at their standard here and at many of the neighbouring resorts
From the top of the ski lifts at Harschbichl there's a good choice of 4 - 5km reds and blues back down to the village
The long Lacknerabfahrt run down from Jodlalm is especially highly thought of
Most of the terrain is cut through forest but there are powder fields and plenty of off-piste opportunities which a guide can show you
The one black Penzing run down to Oberndorf is highly regarded by local experts
Now protected by snow making it's long and steep
It's also worth noting that St Johann's ski area is dotted with more than a dozen cozy mountain huts serving meals and drinks throughout the day
It is also part of the the 3-Länder Freizeit Arena Pass which covers 171km of slopes at 8 ski resorts: St Johann in Tirol - Oberndorf
St Johann in Tirol is also a mecca for cross country skiers with extensive trails extending in to a wider network of over 250km
There's plenty of inter-piste powder to play in if there's a dump
and when it's snowing heavily the heavily-forested slopes here offer some amazing opportunities for fantastic runs
More off-piste diversions are found using the Freizeit area pass
St Johann in Tirol has a reputation as a lively place to stay with the pedestrianised central area full of activity day and night. There are more than 50 bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. Some of the more popular include The Rock Bar and Max's Pub
There are ample outlets for ski hire in St Johann in Tirol, including Skiverleih Mair, Wintersport Rent World Noichl and Intersport Patrick
There are a trio of good ski schools in St Johann in Tirol: the Tyrolean Ski School, the Wilder Kaiser Ski School and the Eichenhof Ski School
OF THE 246 players gathered in Austria for the Dynamic Billard St Johann Open
surely one of the favourites to lift the title on Monday will be Germany-based Syrian Mohammad Soufi who comes into the tournament on the back of his first ever Euro Tour win when he lifted the Dynamic Billard Estonian Open earlier this year
Now based in Germany for seven years along with his brother
Now up to a career high #17 on the Euro Tour rankings
Soufi has enjoyed a breakout first quarter of 2023 as he turned himself from journeyman into one of the most exciting players in the world of pool
The Syrian potter first started playing on Europe’s premier tour in 2017 and he gained a couple of 9th place finishes in his first two years
no one could have predicted what was in store for the speedy Syrian
Entering the 128 player WPA World 9 Ball Championship as a rank outsider amongst a super-strong global field
Soufi grabbed the event by the scruff of its neck as he stunned the pool world to reach the final
Ultimately it proved a bridge too far as he was undone in the championship match by the best player in the world
A silver medal was his reward and his performances clearly imbued Soufi with a confidence level he’d never come close to before
His next major event was the Estonian Open and he didn’t disappoint
Playing with a speed reminiscent of Tony Drago
Soufi marched through the field enjoying wins over the likes of Mark Magi
before going down to Alexander Kazakis in the Winners’ Qualification round
He bounced back in the Losers’ Qualification round and two more wins saw him reach the quarter-finals for only the third time in his seven-year Euro Tour career
A 9-6 win over formidable Pole Mieszko Fortunski put him into the last four where he defeated Niels Feijen in a hill-hill thriller
That set up a rematch against the Sanchez Ruiz whose Euro Tour form over the last 24 months has been nothing short of unstoppable
Soufi rose to the occasion to record a marvellous 9-6 victory to claim his first Euro Tour title
With his career turned around beyond his wildest dreams in just a few months
Soufi can look forward to more wins as he thrills the fans with his nerve-jangling speed of play
“I’m feeling very good to win for the first time in Tallinn and I’m definitely ready for the second time,” said Soufi
“I really believe in myself now and when I’m training every day
I believe that I can win so many more tournaments
My practice schedule has changed for the better
I know I’ll play better and better and when I didn’t practice so much in the past
“I know players will look at me differently now but I’m ready and prepared for everything,” he added
will be live or highlights on the following television stations across Europe;

THE DYNAMIC BILLARD Euro Tour returns to one of its most popular venues as the St Johann im Pongau Open gets underway this Friday 14th April in the picturesque Austrian Alpine town
the Euro Tour’s history here goes as far back as 2010 when Karl Boyes defeated Nick van den Berg for his only Dynamic Billard Euro Tour victory
Eklent Kaci and Joshua Filler have all recorded championship wins in St
there is a Women’s Euro Tour event taking place on April 15th
55 players from 20 nations have registered which means that over 300 players will be in attendance in St Johann this weekend
Despite being at the veteran stage of his career
Feijen doesn’t go with the prevailing notion that with age comes fallibility; “It’s just a myth that if you’re getting older
you’re going to lose it and blah blah blah
The thing that does matter when you’re older is that you have more obligations
You have family and other stuff that you’re taking care of on the side so that reduces your focus if you let it
“And maybe if you’ve been competing for 25 years as a pro then your hunger can go down and I’ve realised that I’m in the final phase of my career and instead of that making me less hungry it’s making me hungrier
I want to go out with a bang and that means good results and not getting weaker and weaker to the point where I don’t want to play anymore
I like to compete and to compete well otherwise I don’t want to do it
If I commit well and make the right choices then my game is as good as ever
I think I’m a better player now than when I won the world title in 2014
As long as I take care of myself then I can compete at a high level
I don’t think I’m done yet and have plenty more in the tank,” he added

The second day of the Dynamic Billiards St
Johann im Pongau Open Euro Tour was once again full of action-packed matches
Michael Schneider (SUI) faced Oliver Szolnoki (HUN) in the second winners round
After he already won 9:7 against David Larsson (SWE) yesterday evening
he wanted to continue his good performance from last night today
has been known as a dark horse since his youth
You never know what you get when you face him
Schneider was out of his league for Szolnoki
The Swiss kept the upper hand during the match and in the end drove the match home clearly with 9:6
Schneider is now in the winners’ qualifying round and will have to face Roman Hybler (CZE) tomorrow
The winner of the match books a spot among the best 32 players of the tournament
Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) and former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) also delivered a thriller
Both opponents did not give each other anything and the match was open for a long time
Sniegocki always had his nose a bit in front
but Ortmann managed to keep his foot in the door
After Ortmann had bravely fought his way back to 8:8
the last decisive game had to determine the winner
Ortmann left a long shot on the 2-ball for Sniegocki. The Pole took the measure and kicked the 2-ball on the 9-ball
What a dramatic end to a passionately contested match
Open 2021 will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches from the loser’s round
With a fiercely fought 7:5 victory over Pia Filler (GER)
Ana Gradisnik (SLO) won the first women’s Euro-Tour after the Covid pandemic
the Predator Sankt Johann im Pongau Open 2021
The women’s final between Pia Filler and Ana Gradisnik came somewhat unexpectedly
While higher ranked players like Oliwia Zalewska or Ina Kaplan were eliminated earlier
the two finalists succeeded in reaching the final match
In Gradisnik’s semi-final for example
her opponent Kristina Zlateva (BUL) missed the 9-ball at 6:6
good performances and hard work brought the two opponents to cross swords in the last match of the event
Filler missed another easy ball and allowed Gradisnik to take a 2-0 lead
After this rather uncertain start of the German
So she attempted to get Gradisnik off the roll a bit in giving her safety positions and long and difficult shots
It worked in rack three since Filler pulled one back from Gradisnik
But it seemed to be a storm in a teacup at first
Gradisnik won the next two consecutive racks as well and advanced to a 4:1 lead
Filler broke the pack and she scratched straight into the side pocket
Gradisnik showed no mercy and snatched another rack off her opponent
Filler did not seem to be able to get a foot on the floor
The more chances Filler left for Gradisnik
Filler managed to seize a point from Gradisnik and set the scoreboard to 2:5 from her view
She used the next rack to get on the hill with 6:2 against Filler
having her own break shot coming up in rack nine
But Gradisnik could not close the book on the match yet
Filler took that ninth rack and added the tenth as well to turn the score to 4:6
That added some spice to the match and pressure to Gradisnik
Would she be able to handle the pressure now that she felt in the final match
But Filler ran out of position on the 4-ball
Gradisnik answered with a great resafe which Filler missed
She hid the cue ball unintentionally behind the 8-ball
Now it seemed that Gradisnik was struggling
Gradisnik felt the heat and committed some mistakes
Gradisnik benefitted from another missed shot from Filler and took the rack and the match with 7:5 to deservedly win her first women’s Euro-Tour title
“I was so nervous entering this final it was unbelievable”
I have already lost three times in the finals and this time
Gradisnik said: “I could not really practice a lot since I had a back injury which only allowed me to keep in shape playing a bit of table tennis”
“So I actually saw this event as a preparation for the next Euro-Tour which is in my home country
This is where I put my focus on and I want to perform well there in front of my people”
“I think this victory here will give me a huge boost and I will now practice a lot to perform to the best in the next event”

Twenty-six fragment of wall paintings detached from the upper register of the Carolingian and Romanesque cycles of the church of St
John in Müstair (Switzerland) have been part of the Swiss National Museum collection since the beginning of the twentieth century
As some of these objects were in a critical state of conservation
a research project was launched to assess and document their conditions
and to gain knowledge about painting materials and execution techniques
in view of planning a conservation project
using handheld XRF and portable FTIR spectroscopy; followed by the targeted collection of samples for detailed analysis in the laboratory
similar investigations were carried out on the imprints left on the walls of the church’s attic
The results allowed the identification of the pigment palette and the execution technique
and limited amounts of lapis lazuli were used in both painting cycles
Egyptian blue and mixtures of several lead-based pigments were also identified
the deterioration of lead-based pigments resulted in shades of grey to black severely modifying the original appearance of the wall paintings
both cycles have suffered from pigment alteration due to fire
allowed for an extended interpretation of possible original colour palette

d corresponding Carolingian object LM-11990.1 front side and back side; e
a Watercolour by Zemp and Durrer depicting part of the East wall before the detachment
fragment of the Romanesque cycles lie above the Carolingian wall painting (
only a few interventions are documented for the Romanesque objects in the SNM collection
These concerned the stabilisation of a few loose flakes present in four of the detached paintings (LM-11995.3
while the original pictorial layers do not appear to have been altered
The project involved comprehensive analytical investigation of the original painting materials used for the execution of the wall paintings
as well as the added materials used for detachment and subsequent restoration-conservation interventions
A comprehensive publication on this topic is planned
The main tasks of this project included comprehensive archival research
an extensive technical photographic documentation of all objects (orthophotos and technical images)
The latter included characterisations of the most representative situations through non-invasive analyses performed on the objects and on the imprints in the attic of the church of St
A second phase involved targeted sampling and subsequent analyses using various complimentary analytical techniques
The results have contributed to the understanding of the materials used during detachment and restoration interventions
as well as the materials of the original wall paintings
This paper focuses on the results concerning the original painting materials and techniques used for the execution of both Carolingian and Romanesque wall paintings
One of the objectives of the study is to reveal the pigment colour change
which has not been sufficiently emphasized in previous studies
The upper register of the Carolingian painting cycle on the 4 walls of the attic includes the iconographic scenes of the Ascension of Christ (eastern wall) and several scenes of the life of King David (southern
The wall painting of the Ascension of Christ
It was therefore divided in 4 parts generating originally 4 individual objects (LM-11990.1-4); in 1968 one of the objects was further separated into two objects (LM-11990.4 and LM-11990.4a)
The paintings on the other walls are subdivided into individual scenes which were independently detached generating 13 objects (LM-11991.1-8 and LM-11992.1-5)
They had the function to improve the adherence of the intonaco of the Romanesque painting cycle on the Carolingian wall painting
The Romanesque cycle was located only on the east wall. When it was rediscovered, the scenes depicted were very fragmented and only partially covered the foregoing representation of the Ascension of Christ (Fig. 1a)
The scenes include themes from the Old and New Testament (Fig
The detachment technique and the gypsum structure used to support the detached fragments
which was more similar to the original wall support
lead to a better conservation condition for the Romanesque objects
A limited number of unstable flakes and salt efflorescences were detected
which can potentially represent a risk for the object’s stability
Considering the heterogeneous conditions of the Carolingian objects
These strappi seem less invasively restored
present a wider colour palette than other objects and are also characterised by a better conservation state
The corresponding attic’s imprints where also broadly investigated (Fig
most of the investigation were done on object LM-11995.4 which presents a larger variety of original colour (Fig
few additional measurements were performed on three additional objects in order to investigate the entire palette (Fig
The diagnostic campaign started with non-invasive investigations on the SNM objects and on the imprints
The most representative areas were selected after careful visual inspection by the conservators
supported by a systematic study and comparison of technical images
Non-invasive element detection was performed using two different handheld instruments (h-XRF): Tracer 5G (Bruker BSI Nano
USA) mounted on a tripod for the SNM objects
The Tracer 5 g is equipped with a graphene window
and a 40 mm2 silicon drift chamber detector
It was operated under the following conditions: X-ray tube 40 kV and current at 20 µA
With these conditions it was possible to detect elements with atomic number Z ≥ 12 (from Mg on)
The Niton Xl3t X-Ray has a Si Pin diode detector with an Ag anode
allowing the detection of chemical elements with atomic number Z ≥ 16 (from S onwards)
the relative spectral intensities of the elements detected in different points can be used to understand the chemical composition
Non-invasive infrared measurements were performed using the portable FTIR spectrometer ALPHA II (BSI Nano
a RockSolid™ interferometer and a temperature controlled DTGS detector
The infrared radiation reflected from the examined surface is collected in a non-contact mode (at about 1 cm distance) by an external reflectance module with specular optics (22°/22°)
3 mm diameter is visible through a built-in USB video camera
The reflection FTIR spectra were acquired between 8000 and 350 cm−1 using a resolution of 4 cm−1 and an average of 186 scans
The spectra are provided in pseudo-absorption units [A’ = Log(1/R); R = reflectance]
The background correction was performed collecting spectra from a flat gold mirror
To answer some of the open questions about the pigment palette and the artistic technique
seven samples were taken on three Carolingian objects (LM-11990.1
Table S2) and ten samples on three Romanesque objects (LM-11995.1
Twelve samples were embedded in epoxy resin and polished to obtain cross-sections
while 5 of them originating from the Romanesque objects were analysed with no preparation
The optical examinations of the cross-section samples (identification of sequence
and morphology of the layers) were performed with a Zeiss Axioscope 5 microscope (Carl Zeiss
Germany) equipped with an Axiocam 305 color camera
Images of the cross-sections in both reflected visible light and UV radiation were collected with the software ZEN core v3.1 at different magnification (50×
Selected cross sections have been investigated using a Zeiss EVO MA 10 SEM (Carl Zeiss
Germany) equipped with Thermo NORAN System 7 (Peltier cooled ULTRADRY detector 30mm2) for EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) (ThermoFisher Scientific
Spot analysis and maps were performed at 20 kV
Back scattering maps were acquired using a 5 segment HDBSD detector (High Definition Backscattered Electron Detector)
Samples were carbon coated (Cressington Carbon Coater 108C with carbon rods at a pressure of 0.01 mbar)
Data was processed using COMPASS & XPHASE software
Cross sections were investigated using a Raman spectrometer Lab-Aramis (Horiba Jobin–Yvon
and 785 nm) with laser power and duration which were adapted to individual cases and kept to low level (< 10 mW) to avoid damage to the samples and laser induced modification (especially in the case of sensitive pigments such as red ochres)
The first one is an Excalibur Series FTS 3500GX spectrometer equipped with an UMA-500 microscope (Biorad
The second equipment used was a Spotlight 400 FTIR microscope fitted with a single element MCT detector and coupled to a Frontier FTIR spectrometer (PerkinElmer
Micro-FTIR spectra were collected in Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) mode with a germanium crystal having a 100 µm diameter
in the spectral range 4000–600 cm−1 with a spectral resolution of 4 cm−1 and by co-adding 64 scans
The third spectrometer is a Jasco FTIR 6600 with Microscope IRT 7100 and a micro-ATR 5000-D with a diameter of 100 µm
Measurements were performed as single point or mapping
or with diamond Anvil cell (Cassegrain X16)
Some cross sections were analysed with a lab based micro-XRF
USA) equipped with a Rh tube and a Si-(Li-) semiconductor
The analyses were performed at 20 kV and 100 µA
point measurements (50 µm measurement spot) of 200 s (600 s respectively in several cases to obtain a better signal-to-noise ratio)
To evaluate the results the program Vision32 was used
The following colour shades were detected on the Carolingian objects and on the imprints (Table 1):
Flesh tones: are generally made with ochres/Fe-oxides mixed with Pb-pigments, while Ca can be related to either a lime binder or bianco di San Giovanni. Traces of As were also detected in some cases (object LM-11990.1, scene Mü-85 and -86) (Table 1)
Local darkening of the flesh tones is sometimes observed
This could be correlated to deterioration of Pb-based pigments
either alone or in association with low amounts of Fe and Ca
No further investigation were however carried out
it is assumed that the painting was applied a secco
therefore the calcite and the Mg-rich carbonate might not stem from a lime binder but from the pigment bianco di San Giovanni
It was used to represent shadows on the flesh tone of the mask at the intersection of the decorative bands
for the halo of an angel and for decorative patterns in the halo of Christ
This grey is probably made of a mixture of Egyptian blue (strong VIL signal) with ochre and/or lead-based pigments and lime (Ca

As the Romanesque wall paintings suffered at least one fire that caused their discolouration
yellow and white) can only be observed in limited areas on two objects (LM-11995.3-4) (Fig
These areas were protected from the fire by debris lying on the gothic vaults
The other areas/objects show only shades of brown-beige and dark blue
The pictorial layers were investigated on cross sections
Usually the paint layers are 20–30 μm thin
while the thicker ones seem to be obtained by superimposing several layers
The lack of a well-defined interface between the layers suggests that they were probably applied using a fresco technique
S10b,d): it is a thin and homogeneous layer consisting of haematite (probably an anatase rich ochre) with calcite and possibly dolomite (Fig
It was probably applied by a fresco technique
Gypsum was also identified; it could arise from the gypsum plaster used to embed the stacco or it could be related to the salt efflorescences visible on this object
S10c,f): it is obtained by a single thin layer of paint composed mainly of fine-grained yellow mineral and a few large orange
Spectroscopically only calcite was detected
but the high Fe content of this layer suggests the presence of ochre (goethite) (Fig
This colour appears to have been applied by a fresco technique
Blue (sample 17_PL, Fig. S13a-b): a grain of the blue used for the lamb’s fur in object LM-11995.3 (Fig. S3b) was analysed. It contains lapis lazuli and calcite with a very small amount of an organic substance whose characterisation is unclear (Fig. S13c-e). Oxalate (weddellite) was also detected (Fig. S13c-d).

micro photo in Vis-light; b BSE image (×600 magnification) taken at 20 keV and 500 pA; c–f EDS maps with distribution of Kα intensity for Ca
The dashed lines in “a” indicate the interfaces of the sub-layers
Four additional samples were collected on object LM-11995.4
in the zone characterised by a chromatic alteration due to fire (“PL samples”
Thanks to the survival of parts of the objects that were not altered by the fire
it is know that the present reddish-brown shades correspond to former yellow
These samples were analysed in order to determine the mineralogical changes caused by the fire
They show a clear modification only in the case of the green colour
where haematite was identified as the fire deterioration product of the green earth
If lead white had been used in the painting of the Carolingian cycle
given the size of the church and the spatial distribution of past invasive and non-invasive analytical campaigns
the detection of this pigment in some of the areas less affected by the heat of the fires would be expected
The detection of As by h-XRF on the Müstair wall paintings might therefore indicate the use of a specific As-rich raw material
The observed grey shades are the results of deterioration as well
While grey 1 might have been yellow (altered massicot)
grey 2 could have been greenish to blueish (compatible with the presence of Egyptian blue
Indeed this latter colour is found in areas where
no grey would be expected (halo of an Angel
the observed grey sometimes veers slightly into a turquoise colour
the mineralogical composition cannot be assessed and the original appearance cannot be inferred at present
The appearance of the areas with the purple to dark blue 2 colour has also profoundly changed
The analysis suggests the use of an organic purple dye and a Cu-based pigment
which frames the Ascension of Christ and imposes itself over the sky and the clouds
as Egyptian blue can be excluded because of the absence of VIL
azurite is the most probable candidate for the Cu-pigment
the present very dark appearance could be due to the modification of azurite into tenorite
it could be argued that it could have a binding role
or Ca- and Mg-rich carbonate as pigment (bianco di San Giovanni) or as a lime binder is challenging
making it impossible to rule out the latter possibility
Some additional macro-observations regarding the painting procedures and the construction of the different scenes have been made in the course of the present project
On the east wall different blue backgrounds are observed
The different hues were probably used to enhance specific scenes or representations
On the two sides of the scene depicting the Ascension of Christ
a light blue background made of Egyptian blue was used
the background consisted of a purple/blue tone probably made with a red organic dye
on top of which was applied a glaze made of a copper-based pigment
In correspondence with the mandorla of Christ another shade of blue was used
obtained using an organic dye (probably of a red colour) mixed with Egyptian blue
Although minium-was not detected in sample LM-11990.3_str-07
its use is very likely and the lack of detection must be due to its degradation
as the layer which we would expect to be bright red to orange appears partially or fully darkened (Fig
The colour of this last layer could be the original one or could have been modified by the fire (from yellow to red ochre)
a sequence of three shades within the clouds can be reconstructed
This resembles the appearance of cumulus clouds in the sunset
which might be the effect intended by the artist
The complexity of execution of this comparatively simple element of the painting shows that the Carolingian cycle must once have had a much more sophisticated appearance than it does today
The presence of a possible dye therefore represents a hitherto unknown element of the Romanesque paintings
the data obtained from previous investigations and
opened up interesting new perspectives on the painting materials and techniques of these unique artworks
Concerning the Carolingian painting cycles
this study has shown an extensive use of a complex mixture of Pb-based minerals in varying amounts
Massicot is always found associated with smaller amounts of litharge
Minium on the other hand was associated with smaller amounts of lead white
The latter three minerals could be residues from the production process of minium
If massicot was added to alter the tone of minium
then the litharge and lead white could alternatively be attributed to the production of massicot
The small amounts of lead white and litharge detected make it unlikely that they were used as a primary colour or intentionally added to the mixture
the areas painted with lead pigments (now mostly blackened) would have been executed with massicot
Bianco di San Giovanni appears to have been added to lighten the colours
In the analysed samples where the intonaco was preserved
the paint layers were applied to the intonaco either in a fresco technique (in the case of ochre) or a secco (in the case of Pb-based pigments)
The use of Pb-based pigments on wall paintings is counterintuitive
given their susceptibility to alterations such as blackening in alkaline environments
calcite and Ca- and Mg-rich carbonate were present in all layers containing Pb-based pigments
suggesting possible functions as a pigment (bianco di San Giovanni) or as binder
detection of oxalates suggests the presence of an organic binder within Pb-rich layers
even if a strong contribution from old conservation and restoration products must considered
A protein-based substance such as egg white or casein would provide a strong binder in conjunction with the calcium hydroxide
the analytical methods used do not allow us to definitively discern between these possible functions of the carbonate component
Another artificial pigment widely used on the Carolingian paintings is Egyptian blue
was used in a variety of mixtures to give different hues and colours
The VIL images show a widespread application for outlines
Lapis lazuli has been detected only on the east wall on small areas
Given the fact that lapis lazuli is difficult to detect by non-invasive analyses
especially when mixed with other pigments such as Egyptian blue
a more widespread use in Müstair cannot be excluded
The presence of arsenic in some red areas with ochres and not in others suggests the use of two different types of red-brown pigment
no difference can be seen between the two pigments
in the past this might have been otherwise
a complex execution technique for the background of the central scene on the east wall has been discerned
The Ascension of Christ stands out against a backdrop of a pale blue sky adorned with multi-coloured clouds
The blue hue of the sky was achieved using Egyptian blue
These clouds were painted using three distinct shades
The gradation of shades probably created a transition from a light yellow at the top to orange and eventually dark red towards the bottom of the clouds
the purple-black frame surrounding the Ascension of Christ was partially painted over one of the clouds
An organic dye was probably employed for this background
overlaid with a glaze likely composed of azurite
The original transparency of this layer remains uncertain
leaving it unclear if the cloud partially covered by it would have still been visible
the purple background would have appeared to form a transparent framing of the ascension against the sky
which now shares the same purple-black colour as the background
was created using an organic dye mixed with Egyptian blue
likely giving it a blueish tint compared to the surrounding purple backdrop
These newfound details shed light on the intricate execution technique of the paintings
revealing how much of the original complexity is hidden to the naked eye today due to their deterioration to several factors
Alongside the mechanical damage incurred during the detachment process
the adverse effects of (at least) three fires that the paintings endured in the church attic must have had a role
These fires undoubtedly inflicted profound harm
have blackened over time because of their inherent instability and as result of oxidative processes
The original appearance of the paintings can therefore only be reconstructed through careful scientific analysis
the Romanesque phase has faced challenges stemming from fires and pigment degradation
brown and beige dominate the Romanesque artworks detached from the attic of the church
these paintings were executed using primarily mineral pigments in a fresco technique
thereby mitigating some problems regarding chemical alterations of the pigments
the discoloration observed in the Romanesque wall paintings primarily stems from the intense heat generated by the fires
two stacchi sections have retained the original colours (including green
This preservation is attributed to the shielding provided by debris accumulated atop the vaults in the attic
which effectively insulated these areas from the heat
This preservation afforded researchers a unique opportunity to study the mechanisms of colour alteration
a distinct mineralogical modification was evident
with haematite identified as the product of fire-induced deterioration of the green earth pigment
the examination of the stacchi yielded another significant discovery: the identification of a pigment previously unrecognised in the Romanesque cycle
likely achieved through the use of an organic substance
and seemingly overlaid with a copper-rich layer
it would suggest a technique akin to that employed in the Carolingian cycle on the eastern wall
It would also be the first indication of the use of azurite on the Romanesque wall paintings
Although the primary motivation behind the analyses conducted on the stacchi and strappi from Müstair
was rooted in concerns about the conservation of the paintings
they have yielded significant insights into the execution techniques employed
The findings highlighted in this paper hold significant importance
shedding light not only on the wall paintings in Müstair but also contributing to a deeper understanding of Carolingian and Romanesque art on a broader scale
This underscores the symbiotic relationship between conservation and research
showcasing how conservation science can provide invaluable insights to art historians and archaeologists
enriching our comprehension of medieval wall painting techniques

An exciting and eventful day at the Dynamic Billiards St
With wins over Radoslaw Babica (POL) 9:4 and outsider Christos Papgeorgiu (GRE) 9:4 the multiple European Champion from Spain David Alcaide played himself into the round of the last 16 men
will be there as well as his team mates Mateusz Sniegocki
6 out of 16 players of the last 16 participants thus come from Poland and underline their currently really strong performance
It is also remarkable that the only two remaining Austrian representatives
Also strongly represented in the last 16 are the Spaniards
the Iberians also have very good chances to advance far in the tournament
The men’s final will take place tomorrow evening at 20:10 local time
The semi-finals will be played at 16:30 and 18:00
For more information visit https://www.epbf.com/tournaments/eurotour/
the “Killer-Filler” Joshua Filler (GER) took down Mario He (AUT) with 9:8
The final match was contested between Mario He and Joshua Filler
It was broadcasted LIVE on Austrian TV ORF+
Theo Riedlecker has together with the Austrian Federation ÖPBV and its Press Officer
once more done a great job in organising LIVE TV for the tournament’s mens final
Mario He drew first blood in the final match
He broke and ran the table with a dreamlike certainty to get a 1:0 lead over Filler
Filler started his game after that and had to throw in a few safety shots
Mario He also managend to snatch a rack from Filler in order to gain a 3:1 advantage
He had the big chance to gain a three point lead over Filler
but the German didn’t like that idea too much
Filler stopped He’s victory march and took another rack to make the score 2:3
Mario He managed to win a few racks in a row and pull away with 6:2
But Filler stuck to him like chewing gum and could not be shaken off
There were clouds on the horizon for Filler
Mario He was only two racks away from victory with Filler’s break shot coming up in rack thirteen
Filler broke dry again with no balls dropping in any pocket
Would Filler be able to once again weather the storm
The Austrian cleared the table and ran all balls until he got to the 7-ball
There he fell out of position and missed the next shot
Filler cloud not believe him being given a second life in this match
Instead of trailing 5:8 he was now on Mario He’s neck
Mario He once again played a bad safety shot and allowed Filler to clear the table to tie the match at 7:7
The Filler went for his time-out and collected all the energy he could for the last stage of the final match
He had Filler almost with one foot in the grave and now everything was out in the open
The Austrian picked himself up and played at top level to get to the hill first
He knew that a single mistake would be the end of the match for him
Filler performed ice-cold and showed no nerves
Mario He had the advantage to break the rack
He had the 4-ball down and the layout looked very promising for him
Filler played a safety shot and Mario He committed a foul shot
Joshua Filler ran the rack and took the title
relegating Mario He to the seat of the runner-up in this event
“After having lost the first match in this tournament
I would have never expected to make it to the final match”
“I only won the second Euro-Tour in my career”
“that clearly indicates how difficult it is to win a Euro-Tour event”
“I would like to dedicate this victory to my former sponsor and mentor Andreas Sommer who unfortunately passed away four years ago
Johann was the first one for me ever and if he would see me now winning it
I know he would be very proud of me”
over 850 antigen and PCR tests have been carried out for players and staff
That concludes the coverage of the Dynamic Billard St

will return to Europe this summer to compete in multiple cycling world championships
Between August 21 and 30 Malmed plans to compete in 6 races and
as the winner of a World Championship last year
Malmed won the European World Championships last year in 2023, a story that was covered by both local publications like the Tahoe Daily Tribune (you can read that story here)
which includes surviving the Holocaust as a child and first competing in a cycling race at 78
“I won the World Championship last year in St
Nationals in Albuquerque in 2021 and 2022,” says Malmed
which is a small town at the base of the Austrian alps which pulls in around 56,000 cyclists each year
Austria on August 20th to compete in four races before traveling to Aalborg
Denmark where he will compete in another two championships
Malmed trains for his races around Tahoe and in Carson Valley
He says his training regime includes between 1 and 2 hours of cycling at least every other day
as well as regular practice races with the Alta Alpina Cycling Club.
The Alta Alpina Cycling Club (AACC) introduced Malmed to cycling just 7 years ago
and remains a key part of his cycling life
The club operates in Tahoe and Carson Valley
and Malmed says that he competes in AACC races almost every Thursday
even when it’s just himself and one or two other competitors.
“Starting in May we race every week,” Malmed says
“They’re good racers.”
The AACC has helped Malmed prepare for this August
which will be a frenzy of racing for the octogenarian
He plans to compete in 6 races over 10 days in Austria and Denmark
in races that vary from just 1 km to 111.53 km
He will be competing in the 80+ category.
“I am 86 years old,” says Malmed
and in racing the age that counts is the age you’ll turn that year
so I am an 87 year old person as far as racing is concerned.”
“I will be racing against people who are 80+
so it will be difficult to race against people who are literally 7 years younger than I am,” says Malmed
when asked if he has any concerns about lingering injuries or his ability to perform well in this race Malmed answered simply
My main concern is that I don’t have any technical issues.”

VERONIKA IVANOVSKAIA SUCCESSFULLY defended her PREDATOR Women’s St Pongau Open title as she got the better of Pia Filler by 7-4 in an all-German final
Ivanovskaia moved into an early 3-0 lead and never relinquished her superiority even as the match got booged down a little in the middle stages
It was Ivanovskaia’s second win on Tour and she will be looking to move on and look to add to that tally in 2024
“Pia is a very good player and in the overall Tour rankings both of us are #1 and #2 so it’s always a tough battle
I don’t know why but I feel very comfortable in Austria and enjoy the landscape and the air so I think it’s just a good combination of everything
Ivanovskaia came with an illegal break despite downing two balls
Filler had the first open look at table but fell down on the 3 ball as her long pot stayed in the jaws
The runout wasn’t quite available as they exchanged safeties
A scratch from Filler gave ball-in-hand to her opponent and she cleared to steal the opening rack
Ivanovskaia ducked a 4/9 opportunity in favour of safety and it paid off as Filler missed the table-length one-rail escape and with ball-in-hand
the German cleared the table to extend her lead
A good break from Ivanovskaia saw her stay at the table but she hooked herself going from 2 to 3
She kicked out of trouble and left the 3 safe for her opponent
Ivanovskaia broke the safety deadlock with a well-executed bank to down the 3-ball and from there she ran out for an ominous 3-0 lead
Filler needed a good break in the fourth game and certainly delivered as two balls dropped
She took that and went on to complete the first break and run of the match and give herself a real confidence boost
An illegal break from Ivanovskaia saw Filler put her back in and she determined to push-out
They went back-and-forth on the 1-ball for some time before Filler left it available
Ivanovskaia pocketed it and worked her way through the table to restore her three-rack advantage at 4-1
A dry and illegal break from Filler left an impossible table and a lengthy bout of safety play ensued
With the 3-ball locked on the rail in a cluster
the rack was the longest of the match by some distance but it was Filler who prevailed after miss on the 8-ball from Ivanovskaia
A good break from Ivanovskaia gave her a chance to extend her lead
though and she played a perfect safety which Filler escaped from to leave her opponent snookered
Ivanovskaia escaped but left the 7-ball on into the centre pocket but Filler fell down as she caught the jaw
Ivanovskaia completed a difficult clearance for a 5-2 lead
ran out from the break to reduce the lead to two-racks
Ivanovskaia came with a good break in the next
She struggled a little down the closing stretch but some solid potting saw her over the line and onto the hill at 6-3
An illegal break from Filler was not what she wanted and both had visits before Filler had the clear opportunity and to her credit
Ivanovskaia had every chance in the next rack following a successful break
She left herself a horrible 9-ball though but she cued it well to lift her second Euro Tour title
“I have my same practice routine as always
doing my hours day-by-day and just trying to get ready mentally because it’s always a marathon here
I’ve worked on my fitness a lot so that’s definitely beneficial
although I was almost out in the quarters against my team mate Tina (Vogelmann)
It was hill-hill and a very tough battle but in the end
“I’m leaving tomorrow to go to China to play heyball because I’m also playing that now beside 9-ball and 10-ball and general American pool
After that it’s onto Slovenia for the European Championships and the next Euro Tour.”

The family company has also set the following interim targets for 2030: By 2030
direct emissions from the company's own plants (Scope 1) will be reduced by at least 30%
indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2) by at least 40% and indirect upstream and downstream emissions (Scope 3) by at least 10%
The base year of the climate targets is 2022
“We have built up considerable expertise in carbon footprint accounting
The causes of our emissions are known in detail and we are aware where we need to intervene
We are delighted that we can now report further steps on the way to Net Zero,” says Thomas Leissing
ne measure has been realized at the Unterradlberg plant (AT): After a construction period of approximately one year
the first chipboards without the use of natural gas were produced there at the beginning of February
This was achieved by installing a new heat exchanger
It is used to heat the thermal oil needed for operating the rawboard press and the four lamination lines – a process that previously required the use of natural gas
The new heat exchanger is now operated with steam from the existing biomass power plant
This means that the Unterradlberg plant no longer uses any natural gas at all during normal operation of its board production lines
thus taking a step that clearly contributes to the EGGER Group's efforts to protect the climate
EGGER is also investing around €80 million in a new power plant there
which will supply both heat and electricity for its own production processes using a steam boiler and combined heat and power generation from biogenic fuels
EGGER will reduce the use of fossil fuels at the location to almost zero and can also supply the surrounding communities with even more sustainable district heating
Johann in Tirol plant has already had a boiler system in place since 2008
which generates thermal energy for the production facilities and the district heating supply for surrounding municipalities by burning biomass and biogenic production residues
The planned power plant project offers a significant expansion: In addition to thermal energy
the new power plant will in the future also generate its own electricity for the production processes
EGGER will then cover at least 80% of its own electricity requirements at the St
which is being built to the latest industrial standards
is scheduled to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2026
EGGER applies high standards to its own sustainability management and its transparent reporting system
the wood-based material manufacturer regularly undergoes analyses by external and renowned ESG rating agencies
These rating agencies have once again issued a good report: EGGER was awarded Prime status in the ISS ESG Corporate Rating for the fourth time and the EcoVadis silver medal for the fifth time
JOSHUA FILLER IS the Dynamic Billard St Johann im Pongau Open champion as he defeated Poland’s Daniel Maciol 9-5 in an entertaining match
Filler (Germany) can lay claim to his fifth Euro Tour title from 10 final appearances and with his consistent level of high-quality play
it was his first Euro Tour final in an eight-year career mixing it with Europe’s finest
the quarter-finals were the furthest he’d ventured previously
a slow start proved to be his downfall as he matched Filler in the latter stages but the gap was always going to be too much as the German put his foot down
“Today I felt fresh and came with so much energy and maybe I frightened my opponent with my energy and my break was amazing
four balls on the break and had the position and that gives you more confidence
Filler took the opening two racks before Maciol scratched on the break in the third game
The German quickly cleared the table to take an ominous 3-0 lead
Three balls off the break and great position on the lowest numbered ball
meant that Filler took the fourth game to leave Maciol in a hole
Maciol needed a great break in next and managed to down three balls but his shot on the 2-ball wasn’t any sort of formality
He played an aggressive cannon onto the 4-ball to stay at the table and from there he ran out to get on the scoreboard as well as give himself some confidence given the task in hand
An illegal break from Filler gave the table back to Maciol but he declined the shot
It was Joshua who got to the 1-ball first and given a sniff
he cleared the table in no time for a 5-1 lead
looked good to take the seventh game and he composed himself to runout
banged in three balls from the next break and fairly quickly it was 6-2
Three off the break from Maciol and a shot on the 2-ball saw him run out to keep Joshua in his sights at 6-3
Filler made a good break in the tenth rack
spreading the balls out nicely and from there he ran out to increase his lead
and he ran through the balls to get to 7-4
They went back and forth on the 2-ball before Joshua accidentally potted it but there was nothing available on the 3-ball
His safety wasn’t tight but it was good enough and Maciol’s response left it out in the open
It was all Filler needed and he cleared up to reach the hill at 8-4
Maciol wasn’t done though and he came with some solid shot-making to secure the 13th game and reduce the deficit to 5-8
Filler scratched directly into the centre pocket in the next to give Maciol some hope
He missed a bank shot on the 5-ball though
and Filler made the same shot to put the winning-line in his sights
He made no mistakes as he downed the final 9-ball for his fifth Euro Tour crown
“The fifth was amazing but I have to mention that I’ve lost five finals already and I played my fifth or six final in St Johann as well
I’ve made some third-place finishes in St Johann
I feel like it’s the home of Euro Tour for me as every time I’ve come here it’s an amazing feeling because I love the food in the restaurant and the view of the mountains is amazing
I play really quick and confident and if I can keep going like that
I can continue winning more but my goal is to find my rhythm and have fun
I’m angry about it but I just have to look at myself and get better.”

VERONIKA IVANOVSKAIA of Germany claimed victory at the EPBF St Johann Open on the ladies’ Euro Tour as she defeated Bojana Sarac (Serbia) by 7-3 in the final
It was her first-ever ET title after having come so close last time out in Tallinn where she went down 7-6 to Oliwia Zalewska in the title match
Ivanovskaia will be climbing the rankings once they are recalculated shortly
It was her third Euro Tour final and Ivanovskaia finally got over the line
She was naturally delighted with her performance
I must say I’m overwhelmed with my emotions
a very special person – my fiancé and coach – told me that I’m on a very good wave and should just keep doing what I’m doing and always believe in myself and today I think I proved to myself that I have it in me’” she said
Ivanovskaia had looked in control throughout the tournament
defeating a string of top players en route to the championship match
she found herself 3-1 down as Sarac asserted herself in the early stages
The German girl got the game back to 3-3 before edging out in front at 4-3
Sarac worked her way through the table but lost position going from the 8 to 9
She missed a tricky cut to take the rack and left the 9-ball hanging
allowing Ivanovskaia to take a two-rack lead at 5-3
Sarac took advantage of an illegal break in the next but once again
a poor positional shot from 8 to 9 saw her miss
gave Ivanovskaia an opportunity for victory
The 5 ball though was blocked by the black 8 but a good safety saw her back at the table and she held her nerve to claim her first Euro Tour title
I’m playing well and I’m very excited for the future because I believe I’ve found my zone and I feel very comfortable under pressure.”
it was her second Euro Tour final and second runners-up spot as she lost out in the same venue last year
there are clearly good things in store for her in the future
I made a few mistakes that cost me and she played great
I can’t say I felt anything but it was one mistake after the other
I felt good when I started coming back but I missed two 9-balls that I’m not supposed to and that’s pretty much it,” said Sarac

Ina Kaplan is the 2022 Predator St Johann im Pongau Women’s Open champion following a dominating performance in the final match as she beat Bojana Sarac (Serbia) 7-1 to lift the trophy
It is the German lady’s third Predator Euro Tour victory and following a hiatus due to Covid and giving birth to her second child
she returned stronger than ever as she finished the tournament undefeated
“I just had the feeling that I could do it and that I just had to calm down and just play my game and be focused
I really feel that when I can get this game all the time
then I can beat everybody!” said a delighted Kaplan
The German won the lag and took the first rack in the race-to-7 final
Both had visits in the next before Kaplan ran out of position travelling to the 6 ball and her safety attempt allowed Sarac to run the table to level at 1-1
A great break from Kaplan in the next saw three balls disappear and she worked hard to complete an excellent run out and a 2-1 lead
An unsuccessful break from Sarac allowed her opponent back to the table and Kaplan took the rack to open up a two-game lead
That soon became a three-game lead before Sarac looked on track in the next but missed a relatively easy 7 ball and Kaplan made no mistakes to increase her lead to 4-1
Looking supremely confident and in total control of her game
Kaplan ran the next game to put herself within two of victory at 5-1
A solid break from Kaplan gave her a good look at the lowest numbered ball
Both players went back and forth before it was left to Kaplan to finish it off and reach the hill at 6-1
Kaplan completed what would be the final rack of the final as she planted the 9 ball to secure a marvellous 7-1 victory
Commented Kaplan, “I finally got to the knowledge that I don’t have to push myself all the time and to be so intense. Just be calm and play my game as I’m excited enough and have enough adrenaline in this situation. I have to mention Niels Feijen‘s Terminator College and the mental programme I took; I finally got the rewards and it’s great!”
For Sarac it was a disappointing ending after she battled hard throughout the tournament after going to the one-loss side at the first opportunity
“I lost my first match 7-6 and felt really bad but I honestly thought I could come back and play really good which I did of course
“I was also losing in a few matches – the quarter-finals I was losing 5-1 and I came back and I thought I could do the same but she played really great
I do feel like I can win a Euro Tour; this is about my fifth or sixth Euro Tour so I’m still at the beginning.”
Earlier, Ina Kaplan had defeated Turkey’s Eyllul Kibaroglu 7-3 on the main table to book her place in the final. Meanwhile, Sarac got the better of Tina Vogelmann
All Predator Euro Tour Women tournaments are 9-ball and the field contest a double-elimination format
All matches are a race to 7 racks with alternate break
The next event on the Tour is the Predator Petrich Women’s Open which runs from 6th to 8th August in Bulgaria

The first matches of the Dynamic Billard Euro-Tour have started after an absence of almost 16 months
The players were eager to finally measure their skills against each other again
It is always difficult to talk about surprises in the first round
Many of the participants are players who either come from the region or cannot necessarily be counted among the top
the focus is directly on the matches of the first winners’ round
One of the first exciting encounters was the match between Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) and Mark Magi (EST)
Both players have been active on the Euro Tour for several years and come from the youth work of the EPBF
At the beginning of the match it was also an exciting exchange of blows
Szewczyk found his rhythm faster and played better safeties than Magi
Thus he managed to gain a small lead which he did not give away until the end of the match
9:5 was the final score in favour of the Pole
Former World Champion Thorsten Hohmann (GER) had to face his compatriot Luca Menn
Hohmann was considered the heavy favourite in this match
the young guns should not be underestimated. This was also the case in this match
Menn gave Hohmann a run for his money and turned the match into an open exchange of blows
Menn found his master when Hohmann played out all his routine and showed no nerves
Hohmann defeated Menn and moved on to the next winners’ round
while Menn will have to seek his fortune in the losers’ round after a hard struggle
Another all-German match involving a former World Champion took place on table 5 between Ralf Souquet and Valery Kuloyants
His opponent was certainly considered an outsider
even though Kuloyants has been a well- known name in the German pool scene for many years
Souquet was not going to have an easy game at all and Kuloyants dominated the match from the beginning. He gained a 3-point lead
but the “Kaiser” did not dream of surrendering so easily to his fate
Souquet fought to the last drop of blood. He was always one step ahead of Souquet
but the ” Kaiser ” did not dream of surrendering so easily to his fate
Souquet fought to the last drop of blood. It came as it had to come: with sharp claws Souquet kept himself in the match and forced the decision at 8:8
Kuloyants had the break and pocketed a ball
but afterwards had no position on the 1 ball
Then the drama occurred for Kuloyants: he tried to play a safety shot and scratched with the cue ball into the side pocket
With ball-in-hand Souquet cleared the rack and finally won the game 9:8 after a fierce fight
Tomorrow’s matches will begin at 09:00 CET with action from the loser’s round

I’m back again to talk about the latest Forsaken Saint for Dark Age: Johann
I’ll admit I’ve been looking forward to the release of Johann – and the perfect window it gives me to write this article
Johann is easily the most interesting of the Forsaken Saints
After all… he’s the evil Saint
He’s also the eldest Saint. When Mark
and Luke were out pacifying lawless corners of the Forsaken realm
Any bandits that troubled Johann’s little kingdom were executed outright or swelled the ranks of his enforcers
Perhaps Johann’s iron will was enough to keep his subjects obedient
Perhaps… but it’s not hard to figure out what other advantages he had working in his favor
Johann never took an interest in the central Forsaken government until it looked like they might ban grafting
One of the more advanced technologies to be recovered from the age before humanity’s fall
grafting is the science of enhancing humans with cybernetic or even non-human organic parts
It was now under moral assault as a heretical affront to god’s own image – the human form
His passionate oratory before the Forsaken ruling body seemed to do little
It seemed certain that grafting would soon be relegated to animal use only
seeing it as a means lend more gravity to his pro-grafting philosophy
The wave of religious fervor continued to sweep over the Forsaken
culminating in the inauguration of the Prevailer council
but failed to even consider Johann for a position in their new government
Johann responded by fortifying a massive structure abandoned since the fall
Here he invited all those grafters alienated by the council’s new decree
The locals began to disappear; subjects for Johann’s experiments
A conflict with the Prevailers was inevitable
Johann and a host of grafted abominations met the Forsaken army on the field of battle
Johann seemed to be gaining the upper hand
until John’s forces arrived to turn the tide
Johann fled with whatever followers could make it
Johann’s next decision was based on desperation
There was one power left in the wasteland that might take in one of the Forsaken’s enemies
The tribe of savages sent forth a champion to test the newcomer
Johann slew him so quickly that the Skarrd who witnessed the combat are still unable to agree on exactly what happened
the Saint has shared the secrets of grafting with his new allies
So if all that background makes Johann sound like an interesting character to base a Dark Age army around, here’s a link to his rules and those of his followers
His stats are pretty similar to the rest of the saints
with the noteworthy exception of his fourth wound
perhaps to compensate for Johann’s complete lack of ranged attacks
While this Saint will never shoot anything
His Dual Katanas are a nice reliable way to spit out a couple of attacks
You can even cross your fingers and hope for the critical strike 2 with the added decapitation
His backblades are more of a sure thing with the added PW and rend – but they have a decent chance of MAL
This is one that’s best used sparingly for obvious reasons
you can spend that extra AP trying to kill some important enemy model
but don’t forget Dark Age is a game of objectives
If you’re going to wound your own pieces
maybe spend that AP on trying to secure one
Quietus is Johann’s greatest former rival
When this warlord was finally subdued Johann subjected him to experimental grafting procedures which further enhanced his combat abilities
Rules-wise its easy to see him as a mini Johann
They share a weapon and are both pretty nimble
he can actually be even more successful at killing mobs of infantry since he can give his Katanas the arc ability
but he can heal it back quickly with Fueled by Combat
He also hits harder than he appears with the Victimize/Sadistic combo
The downside is he’s pretty expensive
Dominique is one of only two Johann models based off a Brom painting which kinda explains her… distinctive appearance
Dominique gives a Johann force access to certain Skarrd models: Buzzblades in her case
These guys are to Skarrd what Flock and Militia are to Forsaken: dirt cheap bodies
Dominique can Squadlink with them making them pretty good given how cheap they are
She makes them alright in combat – accurate but still weak unfortunately
With their innate Cannibal ability and the Victimize ability she gives them
not being particularly hard hitting but debuffing enemy models
Only she hands out not only Panic counters but Whiplash counters as well
Dexus is perhaps the greatest living grafter and the creator of Johann’s own enhancements
His Stim Injection ability is pretty powerful and will often be worth using given how important a little extra movement can be in this game
He’s also great to have around for Superior Maintenance: something you can never get enough of
The Worm Shepherd is one of my favorite things about the Scorpion Saint
I think the model is great but most importantly he lets you take Drillheads
have an Assault Group with Extreme Damage and Pierce
The shepherd himself is easily just as good in melee
He doesn’t hit as hard but can make more attacks
The re-roll he gives them is quite useful but Guard is where it really counts
The Drillheads are beefy models who can afford to take a couple of hits for more important key pieces
I think this crazy Scorpion might be what ends up drawing the most people to play Johann
It looks cool as hell and is a really mean model in game
I’m still kind of overwhelmed by how good it seems
it’s going to be insanely hard to kill
and you don’t have to worry about it getting shot at on its way up the table
It hits incredibly hard and all of its attacks have Toxic
Anything it doesn’t manage to kill will have a harder time striking back
It can even make an attack that causes paralysis although there’s only one attack in that Assault Group
It’s one downside is that it lacks a ranged attack
and can make fewer attacks per AP than similarly beefy models
along with all the other aforementioned abilities more than make up for this
I know I want to field Johann and the Scorpius
In a 500 point game Dominique and 3 Buzzblades are a characterful way to fill in the rest of your points
Although you might do better taking a couple of Strikes or Ravages since they can survive a one-time use of Volatile Enhancement
I’m going to follow that line of thinking for my 750 point Johann list
I prefer the Medic to the Forsaken’s other healer
meaning she can join the Squadlink with Johann
and they won’t find themselves out of range of her Medic ability
Of course I also love Drillheads… If you do too you can drop the Scorpius and the Strikes to add four of these lil’ cuties and of course the Worm Shepherd who is a prerequisite to fielding them at all
Unfortunately the Drillheads are in kind of a weird place right now
Most of the models in Dark Age have begun to be tweaked lately to put all of their points values in increments of 25
Their cost of 85 points means they can be tough to fit in to a Forsaken list
In fact if you run the list I just mentioned you’ll be missing out on 20 points
That’s why I’m trying another list first
Hopefully by the time I’ve finished painting that one up
the Skarrd’s point cost will make list building with them a bit easier
