BERLIN (AP) — Four people were killed Wednesday when a bus headed from Berlin to Switzerland drove off a highway in eastern Germany and ended up on its side
The accident happened on the A9 highway near Leipzig at about 9:45 a.m
less than two hours after the bus left Berlin
It was en route to Zurich and operated by Flixbus
the dominant long-distance bus operator in Germany
Police initially said that at least five people were killed
They said a person initially reported to them as dead was in a life-threatening condition
Six people were seriously injured and 29 lightly injured
Many people were taken to nearby hospitals
There were 54 people on board the bus at the time of the crash
including two drivers — a 62-year-old from the Czech Republic and a 53-year-old from Slovakia
The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately clear
Police said there was no indication that any other vehicle was involved
Police said late Wednesday they couldn’t yet give information on the ages and nationalities of the victims
and that the identification of the dead hadn’t yet been completed
They said they have opened an investigation on suspicion of negligent manslaughter
The A9 is a major north-south route that links Berlin with Munich
The accident happened on a straight stretch of the road just north of a highway interchange at Schkeuditz
The highway was fully reopened Wednesday evening

The results of Henry Lowenberg’s cold-water test
which successfully destroyed the design image when water was applied to the stamp an attempt to remove it (Turner Essay 42-A)
My last Essays and Proofs column (Linn’s
introduced Henry Lowenberg and his experiments with postage stamps in the 1860s
There is much more to the story of the man
and finally getting one of his ideas turned into actual postage stamps that saw postal use
young Henry Lowenberg and his family left Charlottenburg
As a young adult he went to work in the garment district and spent his nights turning his dreams and ideas into patents
he received patents for dyes and starches used in the production of cloth
printing methods for the prevention of the reuse of postage stamps
involved a decal transfer (as described in my previous column)
Once the decal stamp was applied to an envelope or document
it could not be removed without causing its destruction
Lowenberg conducted a cold-water test that proved that the application of water to the center of his revenue stamp design would destroy the image when one tried to remove it
The essay pictured here is identified as No
42-A in Essays and Proofs of United States Internal Revenue Stamps by George T
Also pictured are three examples of the first issue revenue stamps printed on onion skin paper by Butler
was for starch-coated paper upon which stamps could be printed
It was the result of Lowenberg’s work with dyes and starches in the garment industry
Any attempt to soak the stamp off an envelope would result in the design simply dissolving away
experimented with this idea by producing essay sheets of the 1861 1¢ stamp in many colors
An example of this patent printed in black is pictured here as a block of four (Scott 63TC5)
the firm was unable to print a sharp high quality image on this type of paper
as sheets were created from all 1861 issues plates except the 1¢
One might assume that by this time National had a financial stake in Lowenberg’s patents
This third attempt was a refinement of his first patent
the vehicle for the image was goldbeater’s skin
Two examples of this patent are pictured here: National’s 1861 12¢ issue
plate 16 (Scott 79-E69P5) as a strip of three; and National’s 1861 24¢ issue
It must have been an exciting time for Henry
toiling in the garment district by day and flirting with the American dream at night — but the brass ring of success just kept slipping through his fingers
He first pitched his decalcomania process to the French post office
Shown here is a se-tenant piece featuring his first U.S
design in concert with the French Napoleon III issue
but his life was about to come about full circle
Henry Lowenberg turned and focused his sights on mother Prussia
One can only imagine the exuberance he must have felt when the Prussian government produced two different denominations
using his first patent which featured the decal on onion skin paper
The stamps of Prussia are listed in the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue under German States
Shown here is an example of Lowenberg’s two stamps used on piece (Scott 21-22)
The story would not be complete without showing an actual use on cover
One of only two actual covers that I have ever been able to locate is pictured here
franked with a vertical pair of the 10sg stamp (Scott 21) struck with a Schkeuditz boxed cancel and mailed to Werben

Would-be chancellor Friedrich Merz breaks postwar convention of no political deals with far right
On a foggy, frigid morning in Saxony, far-right MP René Bochmann could not believe his party’s luck in the final days of the German election campaign, with all eyes on Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)
Since conservative frontrunner Friedrich Merz signalled a taboo-breaking openness to AfD support for his hardline course on border policy, voters visiting Bochmann’s information stands in small towns such as Schkeuditz have had one issue at the front of their minds: immigration.
Read moreIn a spectacular gambit, Merz attempted to wrest back control of the highly charged migration debate by passing a non-binding resolution on border security in parliament with votes from the far right – violating an unwritten rule of the post-Nazi period. The far right cheered its newfound acceptability while an uproar ensued among mainstream MPs; 48 hours later
Merz failed to pass a separate immigration-tightening bill in the Bundestag after a rebellion from within his own ranks
“He sees the AfD’s poll ratings and knows he’s got to do something to keep us at bay
But voters doubt he’ll be able to do what he says [on immigration] and so the only way to really show they want change is to vote for us.”
Merz’s centre-right CDU/CSU alliance is hotly tipped to come first in the 23 February election with about 30% support
anti-Islam AfD has held second place for months in the polls at just over 20%
View image in fullscreenProtesters hold placards at an anti-AfD rally in Teltow
Photograph: Gordon Welters/www.GordonWelters.comMerz’s dramatic ploy to court far-right support in parliament for his “uncompromising” migration policies has failed to lure back AfD voters
Meanwhile, his characteristically impulsive stunt has shifted debate away from what polls say is Merz’s strongest selling point: the parlous state of the German economy
his mercurial tactics appear to be stoking doubts about how he would govern
German voters across the spectrum said last week that the turbulent campaign has left them deeply sceptical over whether the political centre is capable of forming alliances to address their concerns
with the AfD ready to pounce if things fall apart
Weekly news magazine Der Spiegel headlined its latest cover story: “After the taboo breach: is Germany still governable?” A YouGov poll showed four out of five Germans worry about what Merz’s muddier stance on the AfD will mean for future coalition talks among the mainstream parties
where many work at the giant DHL air cargo hub
Local people picking up a bratwurst at the grill van on the neat market square stopped to chat with Bochmann and his campaign volunteers
who handed out anti-theft credit card sleeves emblazoned with the blue AfD logo featuring an eye-catching red swoosh
said he had long voted for the CDU (Christian Democrats)
after the Berlin Wall fell but turned to the AfD for its anti-immigrant stance
“After reunification, we were proud of what we had achieved but now things are heading south and it’s all a result of [Angela] Merkel’s migration,” he said, referring to the former CDU chancellor’s decision a decade ago to leave the border open to more than 1 million people fleeing war and poverty
Merz has also blamed that policy for fuelling the AfD’s rise
Merz would almost inevitably require a party to the CDU’s left – the Social Democrats or the Greens – to form a viable majority
Because Merz has ruled out a formal coalition with the AfD
that would require compromise on his pledges to curb migration by
turning “irregular immigrants” back at the border
“Merz talks a good game [on immigration] but when the election is over
he’ll govern with red or green and have to backtrack,” Ullrich said
referring to the centre-left parties’ colours
said she had been shocked to hear many longtime friends and neighbours in recent years give up on democratic parties
and worried that her teenage daughter’s outspoken opposition to the far right could get her into trouble in town
She fears Merz would not keep his word to bar the AfD from government
View image in fullscreenPeople take part in an anti-AfD rally in Teltow

“He’s slammed his foot on the gas but is racing in the wrong direction
disoriented and fearful as they prepare to cast their ballots in two weeks’ time
In the small town of Teltow in Brandenburg state
about 200 protesters rallied outside an AfD gathering one evening last week after hanging a “refugees welcome” banner above the main square
Several voters recalled that the turbulent political conditions of the Weimar era a century ago had allowed the Nazis to steamroll moderate forces
called the last week “emotional” for many Germans and said she worried that Merz was playing with fire and had no clear plan of how to protect democracy
“He has made it incredibly difficult for the SPD [Social Democratic party] or the Greens to say they will work with him – that’s what scares me,” she said
“Merz has manoeuvred his CDU into a difficult situation
Compared with many of its neighbours, Germany’s far right has taken much longer to reach critical mass. Numerous analysts put that down in part to the country’s culture of Holocaust remembrance, which has kept the Nazi horrors alive in the public consciousness
who declined to give her surname because she has a doctor’s surgery in town
said it sickened her to see asylum seekers used as political scapegoats and she worried that a broadly shared understanding of the limits of political discourse was crumbling
“The refugees aren’t the problem but rather our approach to them
Many of them have experienced war and don’t get the care they need in Germany – not medically and
which we’ve seen in these attacks,” she said
“You saw the same thing after the second world war
where soldiers who returned made the same kind of trouble
I spend a lot of time studying the Nazi period and the moment things reached the point of no return
I’m afraid now that things could get very radical.”
said he took Merz at his word when he ruled out formally cooperating with the AfD and encouraged the candidate to draw lessons from a “mistake that backfired”
“Now it’s my hope that the established parties can band together and form a front against racism and incitement,” he said

the largest container handling hub in Europe has expanded its towing tractor fleet with 10 MULAG Comet 6 towing tractors with Allison 1000 Series fully-automatic transmissions
Germany – To cope with the constantly growing cargo volume
ten new MULAG Comet 6 towing tractors have been added to the tractor fleet operating at the DHL Hub Leipzig in Schkeuditz
near Leipzig. The fleet currently operates 128 MULAG towing tractors with 4-cylinder Deutz diesel engines (64 kW / 87 hp) and Allison 1000 Series fully-automatic transmissions for container handling
The first 80 vehicles were delivered in 2007
when the test operation at DHL Hub Leipzig began
“We always reorder the same vehicle models to maintain fleet purity
the drivers don’t have to be retrained,” explained Jens Freund
Duty Manager of Ground Support Equipment at DHL Hub Leipzig
The Allison-equipped Comet 6 towing tractors operate mainly between 10 p.m
while more than 55 freight planes land and take-off at DHL Hub Leipzig; some vehicles are also needed during the day
and pharmaceuticals are delivered in defined flight schedules
Containers are pulled out and loaded onto MULAG towing tractors
The vehicles carry the freight to the 413 meter-long distribution center
called “the warehouse.” There a 6.5 kilometer-long fully-automatic sorting ally is ready and waiting. Altogether
the towing tractors move 900 containers daily on average
each weighing a remarkable two to five tons
A total of 17 tons at a time can be moved by the vehicles’ small and agile power packs at a maximum speed of 30 km/h
The Deutsche Post specified high-traction towing tractors for the air freight hub of its express and logistics subsidiary
“Therefore we equipped the MULAG towing tractors with Allison 1000 Series fully-automatic transmissions
They have several gears – six forward and one reverse – and in combination with a robust industrial diesel engine they are perfect for handling heavy freight,” said Hubert Bitsch
who is responsible for service ground-support vehicles at MULAG
“The Allison fully-automatic transmission is very operator-friendly
You only have to choose the forward or reverse gear
robust and reliable; it transfers engine power to the wheels without interrupting traction
because the time frame for freight handling is narrow
Manual transmissions would not work in our business,” finished Freund succinctly
the air freight hub of its express and logistics subsidiary DHL
at Leipzig/Halle airport following 18 months of construction and a comprehensive testing phase
the group has invested approximately 350 million euros into the hub
1,600 tons of freight are handled every night
delivered by planes from all over the world to the European DHL air freight hub
The 6.5 kilometer sorting street is one of the biggest in Germany
able to handle more than 100,000 express packages and urgent documents per hour
Asia and the United States are serviced from Leipzig/Halle in regular service during weekdays
Leipzig/Halle is one of DHL Express network’s main trade centers worldwide
DHL employs over 3,500 people at its location in Schkeuditz
MULAG Fahrzeugwerk Heinz Wössner GmbH u
KG is a leading manufacturer of airport ground-support vehicles and roadside-maintenance equipment
with another location in Bad Peterstal-Griesbach in the Black Forest
where MULAG was founded in 1953 by Heinz Wössner
The company name is composed of Motor Universal Lasten Arbeits Gerät and refers to the agricultural vehicles initially manufactured
Allison Transmission is the world’s largest manufacturer of fully-automatic transmissions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles
military vehicles and hybrid-propulsion systems for transit buses
